We read Chapter 4 of Andrew Winegarner's comic adaptation of Collin Trevorrow's alternate script for Star Wars Rise of the Skywalker. Kylo Ren gets stronger seeking out Mortis the well of energy where everything began. In the process, he winds up dueling Darth Vader (at least a force version of Darth Vader) and sapping the energy from the ancient Sith Tor Vallum. Rey, Chewbacca and Poe fend off the knights of ren while Rey taps into new sources of energy, not all pure.

The Cancelled Star Wars Episode 9 Animated
Before JJ Abrams came on board for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Collin Trevorrow was slated to direct his own version, Duel Of The Fates. Vastly different to the Episode 9 that we ended up with it included no Emperor Palpatine, his Master Tor Vallum (using concepts from a cut character from the JJ version) more Rise Tico and General Leia, a double sided lightsaber for Rey, Kylo Ren as the main protagonist and about the same amount of the Knights Of Ren we actually got.

𝐢. pain-in-the-ass extraordinaires
you might be asking yourself: when will hackett ever shut the fuck up about the old republic? never. the answer is never because look: kylo ren would not be skywalker clan during this period, he is kylo ren. but his personality is still very in line with anakin's and just imagine them on opposite sides of a fucking all out war between the sith and the jedi at their peak of galactic power. imagine the shit talking, ren's shit eating grin, and anakin's insult dunks on his towering nemesis.
now, imagine them having to work together to survive. stranded in mutual enemy territory. they're both imprisoned. they have to escape but once they escape they're trapped in some unforgiving wildlands without any way of contacting their respective orders for help. they would be at each other's throats. there would be so much smack flying through the air, dude. it'd be a roast of anakin skywalker and kylo ren with snarkery and plasma.
but being in such close proximity to each other, they're bound to let things slip during quieter times. or since they're probably established enemies, i'm sure they cap on that. ren probably knows about padmé because if they've had run-ins in the past, ren is a thought invading thot and that's shit he'll keep in his pocket. he's not gonna drop an anonymous tip or call out anakin in front of other jedi. he might threaten padmé a little but what he really wants to do is start corrupting anakin who ren KNOWS is not so different from himself gee i wonder why. he's gonna fill anakin's head with all the horrible truths, like how his order will turn on him if they ever find out. how what makes anakin the great warrior that he is would be criminalized by the jedi and that no matter how many victories he claims for the republic, that he could single-handedly defeat the sith order, the jedi will never appreciate him.
but the sith would.
by that same token, anakin starts sussing things out about ren. like, how there is nothing him binding him to the light. nothing to call him to a more compassionate path. there is nothing he cares for other than his pursuit of power and his servitude to tor vallum. nothing can ever stay his hand or make him question his violence.
except for one teensy, weensy little detail that anakin finds out about and it's ren's dyad. it's his soft spot. she's a nobody. some little scavenger orphan who got picked up by the jedi order. and kylo ren is a pedigree son of the sith order and he's probably never had a positive interaction with her. the only talking they do is via the dyad and they just glower at each other and growl. and if they ever meet physically? lightsaber fights. always. nothing else. but that softness is there and he hates it and covets it. anakin is just as conspiratorial as ren. he's not stupid. he'll find out about it somehow and I WANNA KNOW WHAT HE DOES. OKAY? OKAY.
𝐢𝐢. *chums the waters with the blood of ahsoka tano*
i don't have my tcw verse written out but it follows the same lineage that kylo ren is part of in the old republic. and it's a similar deal, he's got an ancient alien in his head who compels him to become the jedi killer.
he starts off as a regular apprentice. a little bit awkward but he's got a sense of humor that mirrors anakin's even if his delivery isn't as snatched. but i imagine the few times anakin interacted with kylo ren, it's nothing that strikes him as unusual.
but then jedi start showing up dead around coruscant. some established jedi are among the victims, but it's mostly apprentices. and there's now real identifiers as to who the culprit. the few witnesses who caught a glimpse of the so-called jedi killer was a creature all in black with a gruesome mask.
so, what would happen if the jedi killer went after snips. he wouldn't be able to kill her, even when he eventually defeats her, i'm sure anakin was already looking for her. and when he finds her. he just sees her covered in wounds, eyes shut, a horrible stillness in her body, and the jedi killer standing over her with his lightsaber raised.
whatcha gonna do, skywalker?
𝐢𝐢𝐢. intense frenemies, like really intense
in terms of any verse, be it in a different star wars era or in a totally different universe be it fantasy, pirates, et. what have you! if they're alive at the same time and ( probably ) not related ( or at least knowingly so ), i can see them as frenemies. like, ready to cut each other in half, sure. but they probably have some fun in finding creative ways to tell the other to go where the sun don't shine.
they may strive to defeat each other. but there's some enjoyment in the chase because they're rather similar and yet nothing alike. they're mirrors of each other and mirrors of their capabities. if anakin's evil, he's an awful lot like kylo and if kylo's a hero, he acts an awful lot like anakin. it's why they would be so adamant in each other's defeat. and it's a mutual kick-in-the-pants sort of vibe and i dig.

Duel of the Fates #3
Source:
We get a better look at Kylo's new mask and it looks kinda cool, I thought it originally looked like a mix of his and a Scout trooper's
Tumblr media
but it has a sort of filter now, like a mini Vader. It also has these red lines that I like, it's not cracked like the TROS one, I don't really think that one was bad (since it's essentially the same), I just think it was stupid for him to destroy it then just glue it back together rather than getting a whole new one or going without one at all.
I'm one of the people that actually liked Rose and I like that we see more of her but I can't help but feel she's just a third wheel, like she's just there to drive a wedge between Finn and Rey, I don't even necessarily ship any of them but I just get that feeling, her story could've been tightened up.
People would be pissed off at the line "Let me fly...my ship!" From Rey because it's Han's ship, it's Chewie's ship, it's Lando's ship. However, the way they frame it, she's taking ownership rights over Poe and I'd rather her have it than him, he already has a ship. It's all used as a flirt. Yet Chewie is right there...letting her...whatever, I'm not gonna get pissy too.
Tor Vallum has a different design than I've seen, I thought the baby head was kinda odd before, now, I can at least I can take him seriously.
There's one thing that really REALLY ticks me off though. Rey being a nobody is canon in this version BUT she claims to have memories with her dad, they're vague and she says she thought they were a dream but they could've really made that work better than that. There is a scene after that though that I like, the floor made of marbles is really cool.
