Wonderful! I’m so glad Danai and Andrew got this new experiences as producer executive and show-runner.

With the success of what they delivered with Scott, I can’t wait to see what other projects they would develop (in and out TWD) because I know propositions and 💰 are coming their way.

With Danai’s artistic premises surrounding black women, african women and her other artistic endeavors, this success promise another level of visibility for her work. And with Andrew’s world view, I know he will support if needed. I can see a new producer duo emerging 🤞🏾 and maybe later a production company Gurira & Lincoln production… 💭 just imagine a studio where creativity, new voices, new stories are respected and nurtured and the team on the field is supported at all levels…Imagine what could come out of it 😮‍💨 🏆 🏆

For YEARS I had heard about TWD but had convinced myself that there was no way I would like a show about zombies. Too spooky. Too gory. Too much.

So imagine my surprise when I see promo for TOWL and it's marketed as an "epic love story."

... a love story??? Sign me the fuck up, if nothing else just to see how they could pull it off.

So I started slow by watching recaps of the first couple episodes and from reactions, I could tell something was there. So I watched TWD-specific recaps and reactions and basically had a grounded understanding of the world and the people. I was hooked.

Then episode 4 came along and I signed up for AMC+ to watch it live so Danai could get her credit. And y'all.

Y'all.

Y'ALL.

That started it all. I went back and watched the first three episodes of TOWL (after watching E4 an obscene number of times) and then I started TWD.

And B*TCH.

Lori.

I have many thoughts that I'll share in due time (depending on my mood—that's typically how I write things and where my focus goes), but the main one is this:

The scene where Lori incites Rick is biblical.

She is the snake whispering in the garden.

She literally curls herself around him.

She whispers (hisses) in his ear.

She plants the seed of knowledge.

She plants the seed of fear.

She shows him a paradise where his family is safe. Where his family is his...

If only...

Because the paradise Lori tempts him with comes with a cost.

And when Rick pays it, it costs him everything.

His friendship.

His marriage.

His son's view of him.

His group's view of him.

His view of himself.

Because the Rick Grimes we as viewers know him to be wasn't the Rick Grimes he knew himself to be. (A whole 'nother essay can be written on his mental health journey during both TWD and TOWL)

There's much to be said about the true role Lori played in his life pre-, during-, and post- her life and death in the ZA, but this is key:

Y'all. 🫠 The way I have been gagged and a puddle of emotion upon every release of promotion for this show - I truly do not know how I'm going to make it through six eps when just these trailers and teasers have me nearly passing out. Loving Richonne is the epitome of being fed. It's been feast on feast on feast and the show hasn't even come out yet. I can't thank Danai, Andy, and Scott enough.

Richonne has been something special to me for so many years and for so many reasons. And I know so many of us feel the same. We've cherished every win in the lead-up to TOWL, and just when I think surely it can't get any better…I'm reminded that there is no ceiling on Richonne's perfection, and they top themselves every time. 🙌🏽 (i already want to write dissertations on the promo alone 😋)

So I just had to write this out because I always want to remember what this exhilarating moment of anticipation feels like. After all these years of waiting and hoping that Rick and Michonne would make it back to each other and our screens, man have we won in abundance with their return. 😭

Throughout all this time, we held fast to the belief that Rick and Michonne's story is an epic and enduring love story because that was exactly what was shown on our screen. We knew this was a love supreme way back then, and I love that now it's stated out loud (and on giant spheres!) for all to see. If this is the kind of heart-bursting content we're getting in the promos, I truly can't even imagine the ride we're in for with these 6 eps. But baby, I'm buckled up and so excited for Richonne, Andy, Danai, and Scott to keep messing with my heart rate, because I almost went onto glory with today's romantic trailer. 😇

For whatever reason these last couple of days I aee a lot of retweets of Andy and Danai talking about the Michonne-Ezekiel kiss and I just have to laugh. TOWL brought me back enough in TWDU to finally finish watching TWD. Stopped for good once Danai left - decided to start earlier though (S9, cause frankly I don’t remember sh*t about what happened. IDK why but s9 and s10 are suuuch a blur in my mind, you would think I never watched them before). Anyway, when I did make it to the kiss, I could not stop laughing the whole time because of Andy 🤭❤️

Listeninnnnn. That day the promo came out with Ezekiel kissing Michonne was absolute madness. We were PISSED at Angela Kang. I contemplated not watching anymore but I wanted to support Danai and Michonne. But the way they treated her after Rick left was SO fucked up. I haven't seen it in 6 years and I do not want to. The way Tara stole Michonne's charter.... and then MICHONNE DIDN'T EVEN GET TO SIGN IT. ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. And the way everyone acted like she was crazy even though she turned out to be RIGHT about everything. I quit watching simply because of how the treated her. Well that and because I couldn't handle the grief she was going through. Like you could really feel a piece of her soul was missing without Rick. And at that time we really didn't know if we would ever see him again. So it was hard times to say the least. I really hate how they did her. And the way they tried to use her in HER final episode to justify Negan just rubs me the wrong way. Idk, but I just can never watch that season again. It hurts too much for a variety of reasons.

Andy is so genuinely funny and charismatic! He could really be a comedian if he wanted to.

Discussing the new TBOC teaser and sneak peek

This was going to be more eloquent but 4.5 hours of sleep, only 1 cup of coffee, and tumblr eating my other 30 min creation of meta has left me with a scotch taped remnant. I apologize for the word vomit but I had too many thoughts about the promos, and after lengthy-late-into-the-night discussions with like-minded people (SHOCKER, yes other positive shippers) I needed to get them out.

The entire voiceovers time were just Daryl and Carol. “Tell me a story” is Carol’s voice, albeit a little hushed and drowned in emotion but it’s her even if the screen wasn’t. TWD is famous for their misdirects in trailers w/ voiceovers from conversations not shown on screen. (Plus there is the film tracking of Caryl in a tunnel + the script notes about her claustrophobia … that’s all I’m gonna say).

“Daryl Dixon. He’s the only family I have left” This is super interesting to me on multiple fronts because 1) the many possibilities of when this is taking place timeline wise in TWDU since we have the ending of TOWL. Is this before or after? 2) either way whenever it is in the timeline, Carol sounds lonely and disconnected from the rest of those at home while/because she’s missing Daryl which is evident in her tone and word choice. Caryl are family…R!chonne are family. IMO the word doesn’t negate anything.

Carol’s fingers slowly grazing the map of Europe/France is just 😘. A subtle way without any words needed to show her longing for Daryl after finding out where he probably was taken without needing words.

Later we see her by the beached boat and on a rolling mountainside with Ash and 2 other newbies (most likely locals as the plane can only carry 2) and from tracking it appears they land closer to the Italy/France Alps border — I suspect for larger landing space for the plane. (Who knows if the newbs will last long or if the universe jinx will get them)

ALL THE BONUS POINTS FOR GIVING US CAROL ON HIS BIKE ANS WITH HIS CROSSBOW

I do wonder if Daryl’s line “where were you going?” is directed at Carol when we might get a final lengthy, overdue discussion of things between the 2 and find out what Mel meant by Carol holding something back?

Daryl’s whole aura and energy in this reminds me of how he was in “Find Me”. Uneasy, jumpy, unable to do the normally easy things for him bc he’s been apart from Carol for so long. Couple that with the story lines from Daryl in the other promo and imo it’s clear he’s still stuck in the same place he was in s1; trying to get home but constantly stopped by circumstance and/or people and it’s causing him mental unrest.

Not to mention now he apparently had to save Fallou, Emile, and some other guy in the back of Genet’s truck. (Looks like they could have used better bomb planning from someone like Nat😄)

After leaving Mick occupied in the trunk, Carol rides triumphantly into the gas station with quick glimpses of her innocent Nancy from Montclair mask. You just know someone in that group of guys is getting a bolt in some limb, and I can’t wait.

Expanding on the whole Carol in the gas station runs super close to a head cannon I have about how Carol finds out where Daryl went/how she meets Ash/how they pair up so I’m gonna leave it for now, but it makes me super happy if that’s the direction they appear to be going.

Gaslighting in the fandom

I have some very hot takes here that may piss off a lot of you, but I can't not say anything anymore.

I have been quiet for a long time about a certain member of the Caryl fandom. This person blocked me a long time ago when I dared to disagree with her and the collective because I felt like we did not know the whole story of what went down when TWD ended and the spinoff changed. But I have kept tabs on her misguided rantings though. I have long had a theory about this particular member of fandom. I believe this person had good intentions to begin with, but now it almost appears as an ego trip to prove that her theories were correct when almost all her theories have blown up in her face. (AI Melissa anyone?). I also question whether someone who spends as much time on Tumblr writing bad theories and answering an incredible amount of asks has true ties to the entertainment industry. I know there are others who feel the same way and if you choose to block me or ignore me I understand. I will rejoice when Caryl goes canon by myself if need be.

A direct quote from her most recent post. I do agree that AMC marketing has gaslit fans at times and yes there have been instances when women have not gotten a fair shake. But I heartily disagree that they "punish" talented women. If you think that then you really have not been paying attention to the marketing for The Ones Who Live. Danai has been front and center in interviews and seems to have had full creative control over directions of the story for Rick and Michonne. Same with Lauren C when Dead City promo was going on. I truly hope we hear from Melissa soon, but I also know that Melissa has never been a fan of having to do press, most likely because she doesn't like all the attention. I hope that with the upcoming months we see more of her interacting in the public, but I would not be surprised if we did not.

Another quote: "That's not a show I can support. I admire Carol and Melissa because they rise above everyone who puts them down. I love Caryl because they represent the light at the end of the tunnel. Gimple, Nicotero, and Zabel are 100% NOT on our side and never will be, but I need AMC and Norman to show me that they are."

Honestly...I can't disagree about Gimple. I have been totally glad he has been far away from Daryl Dixon being distracted by his being showrunner on TOWL. But Nicotero and Melissa McBride are incredibly close and always have been. The rumors were rampant about tension on the set the last day of filming TWD and then a few months later, we got these pics from BTS.

Along with Norman laying his head in Melissa's lap. All seemed very much at ease.

I know Zabel has not always chosen his words carefully but it also seems that he is very excited to be working with Melissa as well as Norman. As far as being shipbaity with other female characters....well he talks in typical showrunner speak about that. Let us not forget the whole 10C debacle with Leah being introduced in a 20 minute flashback scene. And that was EVERY BIT on Kang, so spare me the righteous indignation that a female showrunner knows best, because obviously Kang did not. Norman and Melissa both hated that storyline...it was not fun as Kang always likes to say it was. I am glad she is gone from the spinoff.

Well, I think I have said enough now to get the rest of the fandom pissed off at me, so I guess I will sign off for now. Believe what you want, but don't fall victim to someone who is trying to reclaim a self-perceived power position by claiming an authority she clearly does not have. Enjoy the show or don't. But I will be around to spread positivity as we get new promo and interviews with hopefully both Melissa AND Norman.

I think overall there’s one of two „big“ problems happening for people who have a problem with TOWL (racists and the likes aside… 🙄).

1- The misunderstanding that this was truly much more a Rick and Michonne story than a TWD one. This was not TWD S12. It was about telling the story of these 2 characters and being able to put a dot at the end (or a dot dot dot). And you’ve laid all of that out perfectly. Like yes, in TWD, Beale (& the CRM) would have been draaaaagged out. But this was much more of a Terminus approach than a Saviors one if we will…

2- TWD was never the most ..subtle show. They tended to hit the audience over the head with stuff. And I’m not sure I would go as far as calling TOWL subtle outright either (idk, didn’t think about this until right this moment lol -obviously elements of it are, sure -just as elements on TWD could be on the subtler side) but compared to TWD, it certainly is lol. And there has been a very big „media literacy“ and „basic comprehension skills“ problem happening for a minute now. And I really don’t say this to be mean or make fun of people or anything but these are just facts. Some people really struggle with getting the information when they are not being hit over the head with it, over and over and over again. After the finale I saw several posts on my tl of people wondering why this, that or the other was not addressed or how/why this, that or the other did happen… and I was utterly confused because those things they claimed were missing were very much shown? I was like, there was literally a scene dealing with all of this? And it didn’t require any reading between the lines to be honest, no subtext, it was very much the text of the scene?! So it seems like some people just didn’t get a lot of things that were happening 🫤

(BTW I don’t mean that even if someone didn’t have these specific problems with the show, they MUST love it then. Likes and dislikes etc etc. As much as I really loved the show as a whole, if I decided to put down the Richonne-colored glasses I wanted to and did watch to the show with.. I’d definitely have a few complaints lol, though still very much enjoyed the show even then)

That's definitely what happened. And to some extent, I get why, considering Rick and Michonne are 2/3 of the main show's Big Three. But when the press and promos started, and people were still talking about some Marvel-style meet-up, I was like...oh they're definitely not listening to what's being said, because it's six damn episodes, and also The Richonne story, not the Team Family jamboree. And then acting as if it's somehow 'insulting' to the rest of the characters if Rick and Michonne didn't talk about them. The man had PTSD so bad, he couldn't remember his own son's face. Why would you think it would be good time for him to pause in the middle of his wife telling him about a traumatic moment during her pregnancy to ask about anyone else? Please be fr.

I feel you on the comprehension thing, which is nothing new for this fandom. The fact that so many people legit thought Rick didn't know how to drive stick and questioned the 'realism' of it but never stopped to think that it was because he only has one damn hand. Y'all were fine with every silly ass moment that happened in the main show, that was either sheer dumb luck or handwaved away, but now we need a complete breakdown from experts on how Rick managed to fight off walkers one-handed. Now y'all want the realism, when you've been so giddy for weeks because you need one of them to die for the show to be 'interesting'.

I'm really not listening to people who need the narrative to hold their hand through everything, or need to see every piece of the plot onscreen for it to be considered 'legitimate'. (I'm officially banning the phrase 'plot armor' for the foreseeable future).

People didn't get things, because they don't take a minute to sit with the damn material anymore. From live reactions videos to live tweeting/blogging, people are just watching TV to make content and have an online moment, not for what's actually being shown. And yeah, TOWL isn't perfect, but the minor criticisms I have for it doesn't take away from the fact that it is very enjoyable and easily the best material from the TWD landscape in a long time.

(sidenote: I will say one of my favorite things from these past six weeks is everyone struggling to figure out the overall TWD timeline, lmao.)

The CRM is possibly making ethanol in their refineries, and this is possibly related to the current theories circulating about Pharmakon which can be a "poison or a cure" Ethanol is present in alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, spirits) when diluted. As I was taking a casual tumble deep into a TWD/TOWL recap and review rabbit hole, this poster for TWD S5 jumped out to me:

(Live view of me👇🏾 because whoa. It's almost like they planned this with TOWL in mind or at least had S5 in mind when they planned the spinoff 🤭)

In S5 we have our favorite survivors making their way to Alexandria, a picturesque community that's removed from everything going on outside of its walls. The skepticism between the survivors and the community is mutual—although Deanna, leader of the community, is excited to bring Rick et al.'s strength and experiences into what they've built, some residents are unsure of what to make of the group. And for their part, each member of the group views Alexandria from varying perspectives up and down the "What the ever loving fuck is this????" spectrum, including, but not limited to:

Glenn and Maggie who are ready to integrate into the community

Michonne who's cautiously hopeful for what Alexandria could become for them

Carol who begins some calculated maneuvering to get a lay of the land

Sasha who's grieving the back-to-back losses of her boyfriend and her brother. (The S5 E13 scene where we see snippets of dinner party conversation intersecting with the group's losses and dinner at the church from her POV was excellent.)

And then there's Rick.

Ol' boy was going through it.

Each moment was a battle between the hypervigilant leader who knew danger was around every corner and the hints of the family man he was Before (his throwaway comment about houses in Alexandria being similar to ones he and Lori used drive by and dream about was a nice touch).

Even physically—he went from his most feral as displayed by his level of facial hair (🥵) to his most buttoned up as displayed by his immediate shave and haircut. As Deanna said when she saw the makeover, he was almost unrecognizable ("Wow. I didn't know what was under there."). Alexandria literally tried to tame him and Survival Rick and Neighborhood Rick were almost two different people...

Almost.

Because we soon have one of my favorite scenes of the season, the moment he walks up to the wall and presses his hand against it, reaching out to the walker on the other side. Beard or no beard, manicured lawn and all, Rick Grimes is a man who's deeply molded by—and entrenched in—the survival instincts he's had to harness after 479+ days of fighting to keep himself and others alive and losing something or someone nearly every step of the way. It would take a lot more than putting on a uniform and stepping back into the visual elements of who he was Before to undo all of who he's become now.

Nothing proves this more than Pete, the coveted doctor who just happens to beat his wife. (Btw, given everything else about Deanna, her stance on Pete's abuse and Jessie's role as the town's sacrificial lamb—more on this in a bit—was so disappointing.)

(Sidenote: I won't go into too deep of a recap, but through Pete and the naivety of Alexandra, the Shane in Rick comes out.

That scene in "Try" (S5 E15) where he calls out the blinders that the community has by ranting and pointing a gun at the residents? Very Shane-coded from his declarations on the farm in "Pretty Much Dead Already" (S2 E7). Both men were trying to help the people around them understand what was truly at stake, albeit in ways that could easily be written off as unhinged and dangerous.)

So back to the promo for S5—

It features the map Abraham gave Rick when the group split up due to Eugene's promises lies about a cure and on it he'd highlighted their intended route with a simple note:

The new world's gonna need Rick Grimes.

By the end of TWD S5 into S6, Rick proved how true that was and he proved it again in TOWL because the communities of Alexandria and the Civic Republic are two sides of the same coin.

Alexandrians, with the luxuries of their walls, sheer luck, and timing, were able to live a life of the past where their biggest worries were cooking something a neighbor disliked and finding a pasta maker. For them, the outbreak was something that happened to be happening, but it wasn't something that was happening to them. They were safe and secure and completely fine ignoring what they were safe and secure from. As we see with Pete's abuse of Jessie, their leader (and maybe even some of them) was willing to sacrifice one of their own as long as it meant that they could keep living in this fairy tale. If one person has to suffer, that's okay because it means that the rest of us don't. Rick with his ranting and his beard and his looking around all the time disrupted that.

In TOWL we learn (more?) about the Civic Republic which, like Alexandria, is pretty removed from what's happening outside of its walls. Similar to the group's arrival in Alexandria, some folks don't know what to make of Rick. While he clearly wants to leave, everyone else is thrilled to be there because in the CR, residents are living a life of the future—one that's similar to what they had Before, but adjusted to the realities of the outbreak. Air conditioning! Farmers' markets! Jobs like artists and journalists! For them, the outbreak was something that happened, but most did their part (six years as a consignee) and no longer have to feel the effects of it. In exchange for this safety and security, they sacrifice any desire or need to know how that safety and security is achieved. And this is where Beale, with the luxuries of power, information, and secrecy, is able to lead his special army into more power by sacrificing hundreds of thousands, soon to be millions. If some people have to suffer, that's okay because it means that the rest of us don't. But again, Rick disrupts this, this time with his love and his longing and his sense of right and wrong.

That's why both of these communities—both of these new worlds—needed Rick Grimes: he was able to show them the realities they were willingly and/or unknowingly ignoring.

With Alexandria, it was the realities of walkers and human nature.

With the Civic Republic, it was the realities of power and secrecy.

Both needed Rick for his leadership and humanity because without it, they would have fallen to the very things they ignored—

Alexandria would have fallen to walkers (remember that big ass herd in the valley?) or other humans who would cause harm.

The Civic Republic would have fallen to the powers and secrets they allowed to fester (remember how Beale wanted to bomb Portland and implement martial law???).

Now, quiet as kept, none of this would have been possible without his shotgun rider because Rick Grimes needs Michonne, but that's another post for another day.

The problem with the Book of Carol is all of those currently speaking (or not in this case) for the show.

When Dead City was filming, there were fan videos of the cast filming. The actors talked/teased about the show.

When The Ones Who Live was filming, again there were fan videos of the cast filming. The actors talked/teased about the show.

With the Book of Carol, there were fan videos of the cast filming. The actors HAVE NOT TALKED NOR TEASED about the show. Nothing has been posted on social media. There are no early press interviews. There has been NOTHING outside of the fan videos.

It is like there is absolutely no enthusiasm to promote this show by the actors, Executive Producers, the show runner or AMC. I understand they may want to wait (or there may be a moratorium until TOWL is finished airing), but for nothing to be said...is unusual. Especially when you consider the other spinoffs.

We just know Carol somehow ends up in France. We don't know if she spends the first five episodes looking for Daryl. We don't know if they meet up in the first episode and then spend the rest of the time trying to get back home. We don't know shit.

And with the show only being 5 months away from airing it is beyond disheartening. Why should they watch? Where is the incentive to watch? No one from the show has given us one reason, outside of Carol's return. Given everything that Carol fans have been through since her departure FROM HER OWN SPINOFF was announced in March 2022, I see no good reason from anyone involved in rhe show to tune in.

Burned once during TWD; never again. AMC lost my trust. Burned it to ashes in early 2022.

Frankly, I have no interest in hearing Zabel, Nicotero, Gimple, or actors who aren't even on this show say a damn thing about it. I just want to hear Melissa and Norman talk about Carol's and Daryl's journeys to get back to each other. I just want things that I can look forward to. The promotion so far has been confusing lately, which I assume has a lot to do with Gimple's unethical promo campaign for his show. But that's ending tomorrow and we're getting a sneak peek of TBOC, so let's see what that and future promotion tells us.
