got any favorite cars from the 24 hours of lemons? (and perhaps some facts about them)
Sure, but not before explaining to the audience!
So, you know how, when you start your car, you turn the key and it starts, and you don't have to fiddle around trying to get the air/fuel mixture to make the damn thing run and stop embarrassing you? And how it has disc brakes, halogen lightbulbs if you've got the standard version and a wing if you've got the sporty one? Yeah, this is all thanks to the century-old 24 Hours of Le Mans, so coveted by manufacturers as to push them to develop all those innovations which would later trickle down into sportscars. They made two movies about it. It is, without question, the most prestigious, serious and expensive endurance race ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is the 24 Hours of Lemons - without question, the least prestigious, serious and expensive endurance race ever.
Tumblr media
It is most famous for the rule that ensures that: to keep you from racing anything but a lemon, a beater, a crapcan, a piece of... well, by now even the unaware have figured out what lemon means in the car world, there is a budget cap. To be precise, $500. Yes, that includes both car and performance enhancing modifications - but notably exempt are safety equipment and decorations. I say notably because decorations are a key component of the Lemons atmosphere in a way I consider best conveyed by a "progressively gets worse" slideshow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, these are all real vehicles that raced. As you can imagine, regulations are pretty lax. And mostly vibe-based.
So, now that we're up to speed, my favorites!
Favorite as in greatest job from the team? Probably (although I am biased) the Eyesore Racing Miata.
youtube
And since you asked for some fun facts, I have a little treat for you that even the typically impeccable Donut Bumper (or lack thereof) to Bumper (or lack thereof) video about it missed out on:
The team won Lemons' coveted Best Use Of Dangerous Banned Automotive Technology award (yes that is a thing) by cleverly reusing the motor that used to drive the pop-up headlights!
youtube
Favorite as in coolest car used? That might be a tossup (i.e. I am not going to wait for the undoubtedly long list of cooler base cars to shower my mind so I will call it a tossup) between the Chrysler Conquest ran by multiple teams though Lemons' history (specifically the TSis for their sexy flared fenders)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... and B-Team Racing's Lotus Elite (seen here in two of its many liveries) which, due to its newfound Chevy engine, earned it the name Chotus. Why yes there's a website.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite as in most beautiful car used? That might be a tossup between French Foreign Legion Action Team's Peugeot 505...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...or the engine-swapped second generation Chevrolet Corvair Coupe of... wait, multiple teams?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite in terms of most beautiful decorations? That might be a tossup between the Honda Accord of Stanford students team Buck Ferkeley...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and SilverSleeve Racing's incredibly-engined frankensteined Wolseley Hornet (for when a Mini is just not coupe nor posh enough)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite as in greatest combination? That might be a tossup between two incredibly different interpretations of sportscar + truck: the Boneyard Butchers' mix of Saturn Sky and Chevrolet Colorado -the more you look at it, the harder it goes-...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...or the Porsche Honkeys' outstanding take on the popular Porsche 944 + V8 recipe that came when they decided to use the rest of the Chevy C10 they got for the engine: the Mulletmobile.
youtube
Favorite as in the bravest, most heroic, most Lemons feat? Well, given Lemons started as a way to experience racing without the pressure and expectations of high-tier stuff and eternally heralds the notioon that a racecar is any car you race, how could I ever go with anything but the far-too-slow-for-any-steadiness-to-remedy, Cali-bought-and-roadtripped-to-Kansas Toyota motherfucking Chinook.
Tumblr media
Favorite as in favorite team name? I doubt it, but here you go: Off To Gay Porn. They called themselves this to ensure everyone who beat them could proudly say they beat Off To Gay Porn! And as you could notice, yes, so many of them are this good.
youtube
Links in blue are posts of mine explaining the words in question - if you liked this post, you might like those!

Annual “what id build for sema” post.
I would build a period correct, Group B spec KP60 starlet with the strengthened AWD system out of a hilux and a 4TGTE turbo motor from the celica Group B car.
The awd system wouldn’t be great, but it would fall within the group b regulations and be period correct like the starion group b awd project. I would try to fit the front diff as a part of the front sump to avoid having to raise the engine, but keep it as a simple plate type lsd, maybe like an F series and the rear is a G series lsd
N2 flares with cutout at the bottom for ground clearance, big wing on the back. Tube frames where needed for strength. Rear mounted radiators with intercooler up front.
Make it something Toyota could have built with the resources and technology they had in 1982-84.

The greatest of all time!
And no, you can not prove us wrong, it just is not possible! Group B rally was the greatest racing of all time. The cars was crazy fast, built to the limit (sometimes beyond), the action was never ending, the drivers were like gladiators. The class launched in 1982 with virtually no limits on performance, it was a class for manufactures to show what their engineering teams were capable of. Engines ranged from 1400cc up to almost 5000cc, many cars were turbo or supercharged. The drive train configurations varied greatly as well. AWD, FWD, RWD, front engine, mid engine and rear engine cars were all on the grid. And really becuase everyone spared no budget, they were all very competitive. Of course you know the staples; the Ford RS200, the MG Metro 6R4 and like but there were others that were not as popular or never made it to a race because almost as quick as Group B started it was ended due to a number of horrible accidents. Lets take a look at some of the rarer cars.

Imagine naming your cat XJ6 or your goldfish Corvette. Most of the best car names in history were after animals.  You can probably rattle off a couple dozen that are occupying a large section of your amygdala.  The Asian manufacturers seemed to struggle with matching animals to their cars.  They didn't have many and what they did, weren't great: Nissan Bluebird, Datsun Honey Bee, Mitsubishi Colt (was really a Dodge), Nissan S-Cargo (bit of a stretch), Mitsubishi Starion (Japanese mispronunciation of Stallion...seriously), Isuzu Bighorn, Hyundai Tiburon (Spanish for shark), Nissan Leopard, Mazda Bongo, and Mitsubishi Dingo.  I'm sure I left a few off that list.  Often, these Asian car companies would just slap a bunch of numbers and letters on the rear end and call it a day.  However, this FJ55 was internally named the "Moose" by Toyota employees and the U.S. market affectionately called it the "Iron Pig" due to the look of the front end and how robust it was off-road. Interestingly, there aren't many cars named after dogs.  I think this is the answer to Asian manufacturers.  Suggestions would be the Honda Shitszu, Nissan Chow, Hyundai Pug, Subaru Akita, Toyota Chin Chin, and Suzuki Shar Pei. Mitsubishi Starion
The Mitsubishi Starion was a two-door, turbocharged four-cylinder rear-wheel drive four-seat hatchback sports car that was manufactured by Mitsubishi from 1982 to 1989. Rebadged variants were marketed in North America as the Conquest under the Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth names. The Starion is one of the first modern Japanese turbocharged performance automobiles to use electronic fuel injection. Mitsubishi began marketing the Starion in 1982, during a period in which a number of Japanese grand tourer (GT) sports cars were available, including the Nissan Z cars, Mazda RX-7, Toyota Supra and to a lesser extent, the Honda Prelude and Isuzu Piazza. The Starion was marketed in the US under Mitsubishi as the Starion and badge engineered variants of were marketed as the Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler Conquest. In the UK it was sold as the Colt Starion. Manufactured in two body configurations; a narrowbody and widebody, the narrower style complied with Japanese exterior dimension regulations taxing larger vehicles and engine displacement exceeding 2000cc. Only the narrowbody was offered through the 1985.5 model year. The introduction of the widebody also split the car into two ranges: one a non-intercooled lower horsepower car using the narrow body style and a high-performance intercooled widebody. In most markets, widebody cars were given the label of Starion ESI-r or Conquest TSi. Markets that never received the widebody had the ESI-r label, these cars had similar performance as the widebodies. Widebody cars were offered in 1986-1989 model years in the US. via Blogger http://ift.tt/2AHvcKK

Une journée pour admirer des merveilles Suisses.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stay Tuned !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

1989-2002 was a golden age of sportscars from Japanese manufacturers. Why did Japanese car makers saturate their lineup with SO many sportscars, and overengineered engines capable of far more hp than the gentleman's agreement allowed? via /r/cars
1989-2002 was a golden age of sportscars from Japanese manufacturers. Why did Japanese car makers saturate their lineup with SO many sportscars, and overengineered engines capable of far more hp than the gentleman's agreement allowed?
1989 IMO was the beginning of a golden age of Japanese sportscar manufacturing. That was the year the RB26DETT powered Skyline GTR came out, the S13 Silvia, the SW20 started production late in 1989. Several new sportscars, or successors to older models would come out in the initial years after 1989, and Subaru would come out with its legendary Impreza WRX Sti, and Mitsubishi several iterations of the Evo on top of its GTO.
I realize I'm leaving out certain classic 80's cars that were quite capable, AE86, MK1 MR2 was in its final year, classic Skylines, 280z, the last year of the Mitsubishi Starion, ST-165 Celica GT-Four was in its final year. Some of the cars listed had successors post 1989, with newer engines that were even more tunable than its 80's version.
Every major Japanese car manufacturer along the lines of Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda, and Nissan often had 2 or even 3 different kinds of sportscars during this time. Nissan had at least 4 if you count the Pulsar Gti-R in the mix.
Why did these companies go balls to the wall producing as many different types of sportscars as they could fit in their lineup?
And why did they overengineer the engines to be capable of far more hp than they had from the factory with small modifications if all they needed was to make 276hp?
I bought a regular MR2 Turbo when I was 19, first day I got it, I went to Lowe's and pieced together a boost controller from brass plumbing parts and a long screw, cranked the boost up 7lbs over stock and made a good extra, I dunno 40whp or so probably. This was acceptable on colder days, but the stock intercooler was entirely insufficient for higher boost on mild or warmer days. But still, an extra 40 or 50whp from a single mod, a better intercooler was going to be my next mod when money would allow.
As a car enthusiast, the end of 2002 was a sad year for me. It was the last year of production for the S15 Silvia, Nissan Skyline R34 GTR, the MKIV Supra, and Mazda FD RX7.
Edit: A similar golden age of a country's car manufacturing for car enthusiasts could be the muscle car offerings from America from say 1964-1973 or so.
