Day Twenty-Three, Part Two: A Day in Chiang Mai
The trishaw ride ended at Wat Chedi Luang, site of an enormous pagoda that was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545.
Tumblr media
A model illustrates how the pagoda originally looked.
Tumblr media
Around the pagoda are more modern statues of the kings
Tumblr media
and queens who played a major role in Thai history.
Tumblr media
Cannonball Fruit trees (technically sala trees) were in bloom and laden within their massive fruit.
Tumblr media
Now, I’d encountered Cannonball Fruit trees in Vietnam, but I hadn’t been aware of their significance then: It was under this type of tree that the Buddha is said to have been born.
We continued on to the Wat Phra Singh, where a huge golden stupa is supposed to contain relics of the Buddha.
Tumblr media
Just as the Prabang pose was common to the Buddhas in Luang Prabang, so is the Buddha with the bhumisparsha mudra common to the images at the Wat Phra Singh. This mudra, formed with all five fingers of the right hand extended to touch the ground,
Tumblr media
symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment.
Tumblr media
A Buddhist monk was offering blessings to the faithful in that temple.

Rides In The City
Tumblr media
Rides awaiting tourists in the city last year. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This was taken with the camera held close to the ground. The exposure was biased darker by 2 stops to preserve sky details. During raw conversion, the shadows were then lifted to soften the effect of the harsh sun.

Day Twenty-Three, Part One: A Day in Chiang Mai
The day began at Muang Mai Market, a farmers’ market that sells everything from vegetables to school uniforms.
Tumblr media
Among the food on display was dried shrimp,
Tumblr media
dried fish lungs,
Tumblr media
and a wide variety of flavored caramels.
Tumblr media
Certain people in Thailand follow the custom of burning small paper replicas of everyday items in the belief that their deceased ancestors need these things in the next world. For example, you might consider providing your deceased grandfather with a complete outfit, including shirt, tie, credit card, Rolex, and mobile phone,
Tumblr media
or perhaps a nice BMW,
Tumblr media
or even an entire house.
Tumblr media
I then got a chance to tour the old city by trishaw, a human-powered vehicle similar to the cyclos I experienced in Hanoi, with one important difference:
Tumblr media
The Vietnamese cyclo driver pedals from the back and pushes you along. The Thai trishaw driver pedals from the front and pulls you along.
Tumblr media
The Thai version thus limits both your view and the amount of breeze you get as you cruise along the streets.

Weekend activity
Two weekends ago, we didn’t go to Melaka as usual because Ma and Biow Huei were leaving for Sydney on 12 Aug, and so we wanted to isolate ourselves from them, just in case.
Because it was a free day, we took Grace on a short drive to Kesang Recreational Park, a sadly neglected park, ostensibly being refurbished as a popular tourist spot. There was hardly anyone except a group of cyclists.
The park is along the Kesang River. The river was pleasantly clear with little fishes. There was a boatman there too, but as it’s just the three of us, it wasn’t worth going on a boat ride.
We took pictures with the lotus flowers on the artificial pond and behind it, a giant trishaw. Then we drove further up to another park and walked across a suspension bridge. We munched on snacks throughout our walk in this park.
On Sunday as usual I brought grace out grocery-shopping. She’d usually get some snack that she liked and this time she had salted peanuts, jellies and chocolates. I think these little trips make her weekend.

AI visualised armoured trishaws (tuk tuks)
How AI visualised armoured tuk tuks compare with the humans.
I took up David Blacker’s prompt to create AI images of armoured trishaws. It turned out to be a bigger challenge than I thought. Multiple Generative AI (GenAI) platforms had a hard time creating an image that matched the armoured trishaw I look I had in mind. The first GenAI I tried was mid-journey (last year). It kept defaulting to 4-wheeled vehicles. Had the same issue with Google’s Bard and…

Storyboards | Scene 4.1 Development
Tumblr media
Scene 4 begins once Katu has gotten in the Tuk-Tuk. This is likely the longest sequence in the animation, spanning from the trishaw ride, all the way until Katu reaches Pettah.
Tumblr media
The scene begins with the tuk pulling up to a traffic jam in bambalapitiya. Katu sees the traffic jam and immediately bolts out of the trishaw. The digruntled cab driver yells after them, only to be pelted with coins and cash for the ride. Then, Katu races to the nearest bike rack, hastily paying at the machine as they run.
Tumblr media
They grab the bicycle closest to them and hop on, zooming through the city. The remainder of the scene is their race through Bambalapitiya. I like the composition that I have thus far, but I feel that there are some scenes that I can rework to have them flow better with the overall animation.

Week 04 & 05 - What are some notable ideas from today’s session?
Consider the topic, activity, keywords.
Remember to also make connections to your design training.
Consider applying the How Design Means framework to
objects in your immediate environment.
For week 4’s lesson, we looked at the objects’ designs and analysed it based on processes & purposes, subject matter & meanings, choice & uses of medium, aspects of form, contexts of pieces. After which, for our activity, we gathered a few items from our home that we thought had a valuable form and function. We analysed all of our items together in categories of memorabilia, functionality and even just prized possessions. It really taught us a lot on how brands work towards creating a community with their customers by forming objects that work to create that certain value.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For example, my item was a keychain that was bought by one of my friends and given to me as a parting gift before we went our own ways to our own schools. Thus, it held an important significance to me because it reminded me of a phase in my life that I was no longer in. The nostalgia and memories I had unconsciously connected to that object why I think that how design works is extremely important too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moreover in week 5, when we went to the National Museum, we also saw many artefacts and paintings that held a lot of significance. That reminded me of the items that I brought and how similar they are in terms of the way they were made. For example, when looking at the trishaw, it really showed the way that Singapore has evolved because now there are rarely those vehicles on road. Moreover, the Japanese tank used during World War II also intrigued my attention because it has such a significance towards the story of Singapore and its evolution. Hence, I think it’s really interesting how they could create a sense of sadness and also a sense of pride by using these objects to tell a story. A designated story that makes people live vicariously through those situations. (~315 words)
