capstone update #5
Hello! We're in the final stretch now... A lot has happened since my last post. Sorry, but I'm really not the blogging type.
So! Over the past two or three weeks, I've cut together my "extended trailer" for my doc. My goal was to have something between 3-5 minutes, and ended up with something around 4 minutes 40 seconds. I figured this was the way to go since there is so much information to share on the topic of Red Hill. If I'm making a trailer for something this complicated, I need to make sure that viewers are getting all of the context they need to understand why the issue is important.
The biggest struggle was figuring out what would make it into the trailer. I spent a lot of hours going through my footage, and collecting public domain clips from DVIDS, the "Defense Visual Information Distribution Service". (Anyone can use content from DVIDS: dvidshub.net is the URL. All of its content is produced by the US Military.)
After much hemming and hawing, one night it just came to me. I put together the first draft of my trailer, and it restored hope and light to my world. 😂
I got feedback from 9 people about it. Only two people had doubts, but I've been working to address the things they mentioned. Everyone else really liked it, which was very helpful to know. When you're editing something, you start to question whether it makes sense after viewing it 20 or 50 times over.
I have a corkboard that I used earlier this semester to help me wrap my mind around all of the different parties and topics involved in this Red Hill story. After making the first rough cut of my trailer, I decided to use the corkboard to visualize and rearrange my trailer's narrative. This was absolutely necessary, because of the sheer amount of sequences and clips I had prepared. Last weekend, I spent a lot of time standing in front of the board, trying to figure out what I could move, and where I could place new clips. It was well worth it, and I can't imagine trying to do this kind of work a different way. (Thanks Professor Farinella and Gabby Navalta for recommending this method!)
All in all, I'm really pleased with how my trailer is coming out. It has changed a lot over the past week! The storyline is mostly the same, but I managed to add in a lot more information at just the right moments. The narrative feels cohesive to me, and the people who have seen the new version agree. I did not, in fact, mess up the magic I had going in the original cut. Relief!
Until next time, please enjoy these photos which document my trusty corkboard's metamorphosis over the past week. I will treasure them always.

Behind the scenes editing!
Here's a little behind the scenes look of Breaking The Thin Blue Line, with countless hours of not just capturing everything on video and audio, but editing it all as well.
This has been an extremely fun project to do, and I'm excited to share it with you all very soon!

PROGRESS UPDATE #7
Post production is TOUGHHHHH!
I have never edited videos this long before.
What makes it harder is that I went all out for this, so I’m not using the camera audio for any of it. I have an audio mixer which records the audio through the microphones at the same time the cameras filming.
Remember now, my videos are each 40 minutes long. I have 2 different mp3 audio recordings (one for the interview and the other for the performance section)
And then I have 3 MP4 videos (two camera angles for the interview and a separate mp4 for the music section)
Matching audio to video and editing/layering the cameras is super time consuming, but I did it!
Overall each video took about 7 hours to edit! I am extremely proud of myself! I did my best and these videos look great!
Overall, combined I have about 120 minutes of footage which is an entire movies worth. That’s insane!

Tumblr Update #6
In the past two weeks I was unable to work with the children due to their spring break and their own unavailability. However, in the meantime I have mapped out my website and created the template I want to use. All that’s left is to scan their work and display it properly.
In the next two weeks, I hope to continue working with them and getting finalized drafts. There will be a lot of changes to the tutoring program I am working with, so I am hoping to work with even more children. I am hoping the transition will be smooth. So far the hurdles and hiccups I’ve faced is the lack of working with them for the past two weeks. It has technically pushed me back, and this is not something I was hoping to rush as I want to give the children adequate time to produce quality work. However, I’m planning to see how the changes in the program go and see where to go from there.
I have no deliverables to share at this time. Currently, I am behind on the timeline due to the small setback, but it is not devastating to my project, just not what I hoped for. However, I’m going to keep on working to make sure I get this capstone out!

Progress Update #7
Hello everyone! Hope everyone is doing well! I just finished posting my final post! However, I had to cut off some prompts because the deadline was closely approaching, and also, it just felt very excessive. I had to cut off the last category of posts that I initially planned - abstract adjectives. It felt repetitive from the abstract concepts category that I already posted, and the prompts were very simple and vague: cute, masculine, and sadness. So, I made the decision to not do those prompts. My last post was the prompt "The Aloha Spirit" and I felt that it was a fitting prompt to end my capstone journey! Also, I feel very satisfied with how the visual design of my Instagram tuned out!

I feel so grateful for everyone who participated in the polls that I posted! To ensure that I reached as much people as possible, I not only posted the polls on my capstone Instagram, but I also made sure to tag the UHWO ACM Instagram so that they could share it with their followers as well! I also shared the polls on my personal social media accounts. It was fun to see everyone's responses and see how people have both different and similar preferences when it comes to color.
I will be posting my concluding posts on my Instagram shortly, so stay tuned for that! 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝘀 𝗔𝗜 🎨 (@color_humanvsai) • Instagram photos and videos

First Draft of Release Forms
UHWO ACM Model_Liability Release Form
UHWO ACM Release Form Folder
At the moment, I'm still working on one more transcript document from the extra International student. As a result, I will have five different interviews but only post four interviews online. I plan to upload all the transcripts on Tumblr before the end of the month.

Initiation (Pre-Production) through Weeks 2 and 3
Bi-Weekly Reflection - Tumblr Update #2.1
Over the past two weeks I’ve been ensuring that I get everything pre-production related through:
In my workback plan I have identified the following goals that are at this point all in progress including equipment listing and acquisition, limitations, logistic goals with the Capstone Research Topic and Problem checked out with my advisor.
The milestones that are in progress are currently updating the workback plan as needed and setting up social media accounts for documentation.
I have identified a few options in Big Five Personality tests with the help of Dr. Katherine Aumer, PSY professor at UH West O’ahu.
Next up, I will be meeting with Professor Sharla Hanaoka for guidance on exactly what prompt I will be asking to reap creative solutions.
I hope that in the next few weeks I will be able to have everything together to start timing out when and where I will need to be to collect diverse profiles. Also, I will need to be spending a significant amount of time with planning and placement of the photo installation in the ACM Student Facility at UHWO.

Week 8! Update
An update for my overall practicum/deliverable project as my research, journey , and brand evolves tremendously I had changed my name for my project name to Growing Creativity! Me and Sharla has been in talks via email in updating the name for some time from Creative Adolescents to now Growing Creativity! I feel this name is way more fitting for my overall deliverables such as my podcast and social media, practicum research connects and ties everything together from what I have been not only creating but documenting! I had let my followers on Instagram know on the new changes, and also create a logo for my overall research brand and also for my podcast: Growing Creativity Podcast.  My new ig link is “ https://www.instagram.com/growing.creativity_/”
The logo is surfaced around a G + C with elements of art such as a video play button and a designer pen tool . I have created a logo guideline for me to follow in terms of having a consistent social media and brand for my followers to learn and see how my project evolves! Here is how the logo for my research looks with color variations along with the secondary logo for the podcast “Growing Creativity Podcast” and a documentation of guidelines for my overall brand to keep everything consistent and professional! I have also attached screenshots of introducing these new logos on instagram!

capstone update #1
TO REITERATE: I'm planning to produce a 30-min documentary film.
Hello, I'm finally here to update my blog! I meant to do this last week, but didn't... I was struggling to wrap my head around this project and what I'll be doing this semester.
I think I'm a little crazy for taking this on. Sometimes it feels like too much, but I certainly won't be quitting.
My first reality check was trying to populate the workback plan. It was a necessary step, but so difficult. I had to come back to it a few times to get it sorted out. I always feel like I'm overlooking something when I'm planning out a project, and I've never tried to produce something of this magnitude before. But I sat down with my workback plan again tonight and finally have it in good shape. Coming back to it has helped me process what I'll need to do, and I feel pretty certain now that I'm not forgetting anything. I also recreated my workback plan in Notion, because I don't think I'll be able to stay on track if I only look at it on Google Sheets. (The formatting... the lack of color-coding and other viewing modes... Nah, homie, I can't. TwT) I also gave myself dates to complete things by. I know I can work to a deadline, and now I have a ton of them. Isn't that fantastic!
Anyway, I'm really happy with my organization on this project now that I have all my tasks thought out, written down, and with dates. The tricky part now will be keeping the Google Sheet updated according to the Notion.
Right now I have a bunch of tasks marked as "in progress." There's so much I need to do in the next two weeks, mostly making lists of people and Instagram accounts to reach out to. I already follow a lot of accounts but I have not created a master list for myself to keep track of them all. Once I have my list, I can start drafting up messages to send to them, asking if they might want to participate in my doc, or could put me in connection with people who would. I'm kind of worried that I don't have much to show for myself, a presence, or a reason why they should trust me, that kind of thing. But I'll try it anyway.
I also need to draft emails/ send texts/ make phone calls to people I know, who said in one way or another that they might be able to lend a voice to my project. Cast out a bunch of lines and see if I get any bites. 🎣
Another thing is, I want to find videos on YouTube and Vimeo of the ʻOnipaʻa Peace March that happened a couple weeks ago. I wasn't able to go myself, but I'd really like to incorporate footage of it into my film. Maybe someone would be willing to let me use a few of their shots. If not a person, maybe one of the local news outlets. I also need to do some research. I have a playlist of some news clips about the Red Hill water crisis from when I made my 5-minute piece about it in Fall '22. But there have been updates since then, and I need to collect even more. I'm not 100% sure what or how much I'll do with it yet. But my creative process is 'collect all the stuff, look at and absorb it all, ???, get vision, create the vision'... so step one is gathering more things. :)
Also want to find more PDFs. Last semester, I found some studies and national news articles about Red Hill, pollution by the Navy/ issues similar to what's happening here, but my research topic was persuasion, so I spent the vast majority of my time on that. There's definitely more out there, and I want to find it because I'm thinking of using scans/ screenshots in my film.
Oh, and I'm planning to request titles from ʻUluʻulu by 2.16. Gonna try my absolute best to stay on top of the deadlines I've set for myself. LONG POST: FINITO!!!

Thoughts of how a sworn officer thinks about the public, and knowing that depending where you're at in the nation, you can have a lot of people thank you for what you do. Very rare cases, but there are some that truly appreciate our law enforcement and keeping us all safe.

Tumblr Update #7
For the past two weeks I have been working with the kids and getting them to develop poems. They each have at least 1-2 poems at this time. I have also been working on designing the website and adding my observations to the website. I have also been adding pictures and doing a lot of aesthetic changes to the website. For the last two weeks, I plan to help the children either create at least one more poem or help them revise their preexisting poems. I also plan to finalize the website by scanning and translating their work onto it. Right now there are not any big hurdles. I am back on track, although it feels like I’m cutting it close, but I know I can finish on time. At this time, I do not have any deliverables that I can share since I need to crop and make sure the work I’m scanning from the kids do not contain any information that can reveal their identities. I am on track on my timeline. While originally I had hoped to be done with my capstone a week early, I am still on track to finish right on time!

Hello everyone! It has been a while but here's an update of what I’ve been working on for the past 4 weeks~
Getting right into it, for update 4 I finished recording VA work. Recording over at the new UHWO ACM building was a dream, also ideal for getting very good sound suppression as I’ve found. Although that is to be expected but while getting extra recordings outside of my recording time on campus, there is a distinct difference! This was also a great opportunity to visit campus once again after the long absence due to covid. Over this time, I was also getting a few more assets done.
In the more recent weeks for update 5, I’m nearly completed with the first animation in the IRIS series, Perse, as we speak I’m finishing up the assembly over in after effects. In completing this first animation, I’m realizing the length of time taken to create a single animation. Most time in my opinion taken in this journey is a fight between asset creation and story writing. Recording and assembly is pretty straight forward. In this realization I’ve also come to understand that 4 characters may have been a lot to handle given the time so I’m going to be reducing the work load down to 3 animations instead and replacing the 4th character’s animation with a series trailer instead.
Now I’m on my way to completing the other 2 animations. Wish me luck~~~

Bi-Weekly Post 3/1/22
This Week:
This week I have two different interviews happening on two days. For the Mental Health Portion of my project, I will be interviewing Dr. Taketa in what he does for his lahui. Dr. Taketaʻs interview will take place at UHWO at 9 o'clock Thursday, March 3rd in the morning. For this interview, I wanted it filmed on Campus because it is the campus that he works for.  This interview will be done in our library with all safety rules still applying on campus. With this interview, I will be probably be running tech and interviewing at the same time.
On Friday, March 4th, I will be filming in the ACM building. This will be an interview with our Senator for the Waianae Coast on the things she has done for her lahui and the hard decisions that need to be made as a Senator.  For her interview, I have requested the incubator space at UHWO. This is one location that makes it easier on filling out forms and other things to film. For the B-role for the senator, I will need special permissions from her to film locations in Waianae that impacts her constituents the most.
Upcoming Weeks:
In the next few weeks, I have two other interviews. One of the interviews has two teachers from Two different campuses on the Island of Oahu. With these interviews, I will be filming them in their offices/ empty classrooms (to avoid other people signing waivers). For those B-roles, I will be filming to the legal height limit with my drone over the campus. That will require location release forms filled out by myself as well as the head of those campuses.
Problems that Occur and I Need to Adjust:
I need to look for an alternative place/ people to interview for certain portions of my project. I will be doing this by the end of today. Hoping to secure those things by at least the end of this week.
I will let you guys know if anything does change within the next couple of days from what is said above in regards to my senior project.
