How do we fight against this monstrous machine of lies and falsehood? The purveyors of hate and falsehood have so many resources – money, pliant 24×7 news channels, lots of them, troll armies, and the police too. To be honest, Rohit, it makes me feel pessimistic at times. At times I also feel lonely. Lots of people far more privileged than me who were together in this fight against fascism, in the movement against CAA-NRC/NPR, today choose to remain silent when I am singled out for these lies. It makes you feel unwanted. It makes you feel a stranger in your own land. The only thing I find succour in in such moments is the realisation that none of this is personal. That my persecution and isolation is symbolic of something larger – the persecution and isolation of Muslims in India right now.
Umar Khalid, writing from prison, has provided a razor sharp indictment of how insidious fascist propaganda has become in India. He has been in jail for two years now under UAPA charges.

Umar is part of a chapter of India’s new political science. His experiences and the repeated injustices he has met at the hands of the state make him a modern hero at a time when many among the youth are unemployed and depend on their parents to get by. When nepotism is India’s greatest assertion, scholars like Khalid come out of the path challenging the absurdity… There’s something sinister about his arrest. Not least the merit of the case, which is clearly unmeritorious, but about the story of Umar as an evolving young man of the country. His position on the viciousness of caste has set him apart from the obviating positions of the Brahminical left of India.

But for all its hardships, jail has also led to several “positive” changes in my life. I have quit smoking. For two years I have lived without a mobile phone, which means I am over that other drug too – social media. I came here with the concentration span of a tweet, but now I read several novels every month. And finally, after several years of trying, my sleep cycle is back in place (my mother would be glad to hear this). Rather than going off to sleep at daybreak, I now wake up with the sun.  Mornings could be called lovely.
I thought it is important to list these out while closing this letter, given the increasing number of political prisoners across jails in the country.

The Somaiya School in Mumbai has asked its principal Parveen Shaikh to resign after OpIndia – a Hindutva website accused of spreading misinformation and hate speech – published an article targeting her for her purported political views.
Shaikh has worked at the private school in the city’s Vidyavihar locality for 12 years and has been its principal for over seven years.
On April 24, OpIndia carried a story claiming to expose Shaikh’s “disturbing social media behaviour”. It accused her of being a “Hamas-sympathiser”, “anti-Hindu” and a supporter of “Islamist Umar Khalid” based on posts that she had “liked” from her Twitter account.
On April 26 afternoon, the management of The Somaiya School asked Shaikh to step down, Shaikh told Scroll.
“They expressed their disappointment with the content of the OpIndia article,” Shaikh told Scroll. “They have said [asking me to step down] was a tough decision for them to make, but this association cannot be continued.”
Shaikh added: “The management acknowledges my hard work and contribution to shaping The Somaiya School. However, they said they were under immense pressure to take action against me. They have not specified grounds other than the OpIndia article.”
[…]
Shaikh rarely posts on her Twitter account. When she does, it is related to education. However, she has “liked” several posts in support of the besieged territory of Gaza, where Israel and Hamas have been fighting a war since October.
Shaikh also liked several posts that were critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his political regime.

Do you ever think about how Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bannerjee got arrested for protesting the same issue but Anirban and Kanhaiya were let off, and Kanhaiya is now actually a candidate for the Lok Sabha while Umar is still in jail?
Do you think it might have something to do with their religions or is it hinduphobic of me to say that.

"Behind every favorite surah, there is an untold story..."
@edgarhamas
Setiap kita punya kisahnya sendiri-sendiri. Dan ia akan bermakna jika Al Qur'an dibersamai; menjadi penyejuk yang kau butuhkan saat panasnya situasi.
Menjadi penghangat saat kau merasa dingin dan diterjang badai. Mari kau dan aku kembali; bulan Al Qur'an kan datang sebentar lagi.

Quote
One recent “point,” Bhattacharya recalled, was Khalid telling them that from what he had seen in jail, Hindi-language newspapers are how most inmates got their news. If they were running public campaigns to persuade the BJP government to release political prisoners under their regime, they should start writing in Hindi. Lahiri recalled that while English-language newspapers carried both the prosecution and defence arguments of Khalid’s year-long bail hearings in the trial court hearing the Delhi riots conspiracy case and then the Delhi High Court, the Hindi language newspapers barely reported the arguments Khalid’s lawyer Trideep Pais made in court. They, however, carried the claims made by the police in a prominent place, with headlines that made allegations sound like facts.

why do shias not like abu bakr?
Usurped the caliphate from Imam Ali. (a) (see incident at Saqifah)
Refused to give Lady Fatimah (sa) her inheritance, which invoked her anger; the Prophet (sawas) said that anyone who angers his daughter, he invokes his anger and God's curse is upon those who angers the Prophet. (See: Sermon of Fadak)
During the first fitnah, Abu Bakr sent Khalid ibn Walid (la) to kill Malik ibn Nuwaiyrah, a loyal companion of the Prophet (sawas) and Ali (a), after he refused to pay the Zakat (almsgiving) as he did not recogize the rule of Abu Bakr. Khalid (la) killed Malik and subsequently r*ped his wife and took her as his bride. Instead of facing punishment, he was forgiven because "he was an important asset to the cause of Islam". (see Malik ibn Nuwaiyrah)
Sent Umar and various companions to force Ali (a) and Fatimah (sa) to swear their allegience to Abu Bakr. Threatened to burn the house down if they did not come out. As Umar and his minions attempted to barge into their home in the Prophet's mosque, the door was forced open and hit the womb of the Prophet's daughter (sa), leading to her miscarriage. She succumbed to her injuries six months later. (See: Attack of Fatimah's house)
Fatimah (sa) was buried in secrecy as she did not want Abu Bakr to know of it and attend her funeral prayer, hence why her grave is nowhere to be found even till this day.

Did you hear about the sedition charges against arundhati roy?
yeah. she left the country when they started doing those protests outside her house and the death threats ramped up a few years back, so I expect this is to ensure she can never come back. she will be fine, mostly. umar khalid is still in jail. they've arrested any journo who was anti modi and slightly associated with newsclick on terrorism charges bc nyt gave them justification. its bleak. all the news is bad.

A little over four years since the attack on Jamia Milia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University and JNU in Delhi, with horrifying attacks on the students protesting CAA & NRC and unlawful detainment of students that continues till today. Umar Khalid still languishes in prison with no bail available. The justice in this country non existent as ever.
