How to start IAS preparation: The Beginner’s Guide

1. Carefully read the Syllabus

One of the main reasons why students go far and wide while studying for the UPSC is that they ignore the curriculum. You don’t require a lot of expertise or a lot of understanding. UPSC requires employees who are generalists rather than specialists. You’ll be able to focus your preparation on the things that matter if you stick to the syllabus and understand exactly what they expect.

UPSC CSE FIRST ATTEMPT: What Goes wrong.

An article about the mistakes generally made in the first attempt.

Having done it, I guess I can try to explain what goes wrong.

UPSC CSE is one exam which if not the most difficult to crack it is the most difficult to understand and figure out, that’s where the problem starts.

I have always maintained and I always tell my friends, juniors, aspirants that your first attempt is your best attempt and the best chance at this examination. Why? Well for starters, one is at least very excited by the fact that he is beginning something new and fresh, that he will read so many diverse books(book lovers think that way), that he will soon become an IAS or an IPS or an IFS etc, that soon everyone will be proud of them, and many more such thoughts make you work hard, at least at the beginning.

But, there are certain things which if not done properly, make this exam very tough to crack, specially in first attempt, they are:

1- Failure at time management:

UPSC CSE requires you to make a very compact time table, at least for the initial phase of say 4–5 months and follow it religiously. You must not think that your regular day, with hours on social media, a few with your friends, a few episodes of your favourite TV series etc will leave you time, absolutely not.

Aspirants fail to adhere to their time tables and thus, they fail to meet the deadlines they themselves make and this has a negative effect on their mind.

2- Piling up the work:

Even when aspirants do meet their time targets to study 7,8,9 hours a day, they often fail to meet the targets of the topics they wanted to cover. What happens next, they decide to do this one topic tomorrow with tomorrow’ topics, which never happens.

3- Prelims or Mains or Both?:

This is one of the very basic problems, faced by beginners. That they can’t make out if they have to first cover prelims or take mains simultaneously.

If one looks at the syllabus, it’s very similar for both prelims and mains, but, the demands are very different. Mains is a subjective exam and needs both depth and breadth in your knowledge, with an answering ability that allows you to say what the question asks in a very lucid and to the point manner, in a very simple language. While prelims is an objective paper, it needs practice at solving questions as much as mains, this fact is many times ignored by the students. It is not completely their fault either, coaching institutions have though made all the hullabaloo around prelims and mains test series, but in fact forgot prelims, which needs question solving as much. One needs to be in the mode, which aspirants often ignore.

4- Too Many opinions, too many plans and too many changes:

Hoarding books by asking about them from various toppers, teachers, fellow aspirants is one of the biggest problems. Students end up having multiple books, notes, sources for the same topic and they are then confused how to go about finishing them.

This is not only a waste of time and money but also harms them psychologically, to see a pile of undone work and books is a pressure of different sort, it is a constant reminder of the fact that you have not done so much.

This is not needed at all, just follow one source for one topic, that’s it.

Another issue is that too many opinions and strategies are available. I have always said that one must discover their own strategy, they can listen to all but not try and incorporate everything and be like all.

5- Patience, patience, patience my boy!:

This exam is a test of patience. Don’t expect results over night, it might take some time when you start scoring say 120 in prelims GS paper 1, so, be patient. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Don’t be disheartened, people fall and fall again, only to rise stronger.

6- Losing your Life:

Another crucial aspect is that one might go to an extreme of cutting himself of from everyone and everything but must not cut themselves from their own selves. They must take some time out to nourish their body and soul, develop a hobby and give some time to it.

It refreshes your mind and keeps you motivated.

7- Bad Luck:

This exam is also very much about good luck favouring you. The subjective nature of mains and the interview leaves a lot on luck and one can never be sure about their strategy or any planning. Many a times you get the lowest marks in the paper you thought you did the best at, many a times you get low marks in interview when you get more in written than many others and miss out, many times Prelims is such that it’s all but a guessing game after an extent, so, work hard to negate this factor as much as possible but it is there.

8- Bad advice/ Wrong Guidance:

I got some of it as well, when a teacher told me that you don’t need to join any test series for mains, for your optional and you will get the highest marks the way you were writing anyways, I took it, didn’t get a second opinion and had to pay the price and got a much lower rank than I could’ve gotten in my first attempt.

Another bad advice I got was that handwriting does not matter at all, and all that matters is that you finish the paper. Ridiculous, basic common sense would say otherwise.

THIS IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE MISS OUT ON, IN THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT. BUT THIS IS NOT ABOUT GLORIFYING THOSE QHO GET THROUGH IN FIRST ATTEMPT. ONE THING MUST BE CLEAR, FIRST OR LAST, ALL ARE EQUAL AND YOUR ATTEMPT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT YOUR ABILITY.

Guide to Crack the UPSC Civil Services Exam

Initially, you will start studying hard but as time passes you will lose steam. Or you would study a subject and like it so much that you keep studying it for months, ignoring the rest. The risk of going astray is high if you study haphazardly. Therefore, you must have a proper IAS planner to guide you.

So in a marathon exam like the UPSC civil services exam, creating a foolproof study plan is very important. And more importantly, sticking to it is very very important!

A Detailed IAS Planner 2022 for Beginners

The UPSC issues an official notification for the IAS Exam in February, and the UPSC Exam is typically held on the first Sunday in June. The UPSC Exam 2022 schedule has already been released by the commission. Take a look at the UPSC 2022 important dates:

Take a piece of paper and make your macro plan first. Write down the various months on a piece of paper. From July 2021 to February 2022 there are 6 Months that you have to not just finish the syllabus but also revise.

Know the Exam Dates

It should come as no surprise that you should have a good idea of the dates ahead of time. It will assist you in organising your study schedule based on the number of hours you wish to devote. Make a decision about when you want to take the exam. Candidates in the general category are allowed a maximum of six attempts. As a result, don’t go into the exam unprepared. If you’re a new student, you’ll need at least 12-14 months to study thoroughly.

Divide the Subjects

Now you need to divide your studies into these various months. List down the subjects which are there for both Prelims and Mains.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Study Plan from July

You have to follow discipline at this time. During this time you should start your preparation for General Studies. Take up two subjects as studying one subject becomes monotonous. Take up one subject which you are familiar with and one which you are completely new to.

This will help you have comfort and also step out of your comfort zone. You can opt for History if you are comfortable in it and Polity if you are afraid of it.

The idea is to first generate interest and discipline for your need to study for a long period of time. Understand and revise the various concepts in the two subjects that you have chosen.

IAS Planner for August and September

Now that you have studied for the previous month you will probably be in the mindset to study. Now the plan is to increase the hours that you study from 5 hours to 7 hours.

It is expected that you have finished the earlier chosen subjects. Now the target for these two months is to finish the tough subject completely and also begin the other subject.

IAS Planner for Prelims

With a complete syllabus for Prelims done and 2/ 3rds of optional like geography optional done, now the time has come to fully focus on the prelims. Keep the optional papers aside and revise the notes for GS that you have made while studying the subject the first time. You should revise the entire syllabus at least 3 times.

Solve as many question papers as possible for both GS and CSAT. If you do not solve at least 100 -120 practice papers then you are not going to pass. You should at least solve 10000 questions in all.

Refer to papers from many sources so that your brain is conditioned to expect the unexpected.  A warning to all aspirants, do not ignore CSAT as it can backfire in the exam.

Indus Valley Civilization - Points to Remember for UPSC Civil Services Exam

The Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) was a Bronze Age civilization (2600-1900 BCE) extending from what today is North-east Afghanistan to Pakistan and North-west India. It flourished in the basins of the Indus River, one of the major rivers of Asia, and the Ghaggar-Hakra River, that once coursed through North-west India and Eastern Pakistan.

The Early Harappan Period

The characteristics of the early Harappan period are:

 Amri -> Stone and mud brick houses; Granaries; fortification

 Kot-Diji -> decorative pottery; fortification

 Mehrgarh -> prosperous town; use of lapis-lazuli;      seals;

 Kalibangan -> mud bricks houses; pottery in different shapes;      ploughed field surface.

Emergence of the Harappan Civilization

 Some of the reasons that may have led to the emergence of the Harappan civilization are:

·         The Existence of many agricultural groups and pastoral nomadic communities were living in close contact with each other.

·         This must have led to conflict among them.

·         The agricultural communities would have fought with each other for the control of more fertile tracts of land which is the possible reason for defensive walls.

·         This led to emergence of Mature Harappan period.

Features of Harappan Civilization

The Harappan society was characterized by the presence of

·         specialized craftsmen,

·         long distance trade,

·         the existence of rich and poor people and

·         the presence of kings.                  

The Harappan communities staying in Rajasthan, Punjab or Sindh may have been using the same sets of weights and measures.

The copper-bronze tools used by them were also uniform in design, shape and size, the bricks they used had a proportion 4:2:1.

The towns were characterized by uniformities in the planning of the buildings, citadels etc.

The seals, shell(shankh) bangles, carnelian beads and the disc beads of steatite were also uniformly designed in the entire geographical space covered by the cities of the Harappan Civilization.

Most of the time a Harappan site is identified by the use of a pinkish pottery with bright red slip. This pottery had standard representations of trees, animals, birds and geometric motifs in black.

It is the oldest civilization of India and also known as the first Urbanization.

After independence it was called “Harappan Civilization”. As Harappa was the first largest city excavated.

Important Centers

During the civilization there were around 1000 cities.

It was the first     site to be excavated.

Substantial section of population was engaged in     activities related to administration, trade, craft work or religion.

It was located in the midst of some important     trade routes of the world.

Mohenjodaro

It is the largest     site of Harappan Civilization. It is also called “Mound of     the Dead”.

It is one of the world’s earliest major urban     settlements.

Kalibangan

It has the largest     concentration of the Harappan Civilization.

Lothal

It is located in the coastal flats if the Gulf of     Cambay.

It is called as the dockyard of the Harappan times.

Dholavira

Located in the Rann of Kannch is most recently excavated place.
