Do not watch if sensitive to animal killings. Lamb (2021) Dir. Valdimar Johannsson .
I watched Lamb for the first time last night and immediately felt unsettled but also it’s a beautiful film and yes I’m sure some scenes deserve some eye rolls but there’s something deeper happening in this film. Couldn’t get it out of my mind all day.

Lamb [Dýrið] (2021)
Tumblr media
This is a monkey’s paw moment for furries. Oh, you want an animal people movie? Well FUCK YOU HERE’S THIS NIGHTMARE. Motherhood is unnatural and sad in this meditative accounting of familial happiness and grief. Exactly what the past held for María and Ingvar remains ambiguous, but there was certainly some sort of loss of a daughter. María visits the grave of an Ada Ingvarsdóttir, and gives the child of opportunity she steals the same moniker. This lamb-child is a gift, she tells herself, tells Pétur, and there is happiness to be found. After flirting with horror at the hybrid child, Pétur accepts this unusual family unit, taking on the role of uncle, taking Ada to the lake, playing with her. They manage a kind of unity, laughing and dancing to an old music video of Pétur’s, drinking into a drunken reverie. But the happiness is cursed. María got her second chance at a child by taking it away from the true mother, and then killing her when the ewe persists in her attempts at reuniting with her offspring. Pétur too has a dicey past with María, making inappropriate passes at his brother’s wife. Again, the details to this remain ambiguous. But it’s more the knowledge of some thing that matters to the emotional thrust of the film.
Existing in a liminal space beyond time, setting and space work together to set apart this surreal fairy tale. The perpetual semi-light of Iceland’s midnight sun cast into question when most given scenes take place during the day or night, stirring restlessly and contributing to a dull but constant sense of uncertainly and anxiety. In an opening conversation, the couple speak of time travel, Ingvar contemplating the future and María positing a desire to return to the past. Perhaps María wants to return to her daughter and this lamb-child offers a chance to do that. The uncertain weather of the region furthers this generalized anxiety. Mist and fog swath scenes, blurring the view and calling into question the specifics of the events occurring onscreen. The first scene, heavy breathing of some unseen entity cutting through the fields to pay a visit to the sheepfold signals an air of dread; the film never quite dips into the realm of straight horror, but it’s the unease that penetrates narrative and setting alike which defines tone.
THE RULES
Okay honestly just drink any time the uncanny valley gets breached or there’s too much staring.  I don’t even know.  I mean, Sjón co-wrote the screenplay, what the fuck am I supposed to work with here?
