Top 5 spooky media?
Oh man, too many to count, haha, so how about my top five spooky movies I've watched this year so far?
Tumblr media
Black Christmas (1974). I can't believe I'd never seen this Canadian horror movie about a group of sorority girls getting terrorised by phone calls over the Christmas break. It's genuinely really good, full of some delightful red herrings and some genuine scares. I jumped! A few times! That doesn't often happen these days, haha.
Tumblr media
Sissy (2022). This one was such a delightful surprise to me! I'd been keen to see it as a big fan of Aisha Dee and also just generally tending to enjoy lowbudget Australian horror, but it was so much more than that. It really skewers wellness culture and social media, using both to explore the way damaged women can use both to perpetuate violence. It's flawed, but also a bit magic? I loved it. Let more women be evil!
Tumblr media
Helter Skelter (2012). One of my favourite films of all time is Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue, and in so many ways, Helter Skelter feels like its in conversation with it. A Japanese horror about a pop star losing control of her mind and body, but where Perfect Blue leans into questions of identity and fan entitlement, Helter Skelter feels much more about ambition, class and how you stay on top. Infinitely fucked up, but a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
Carnival of Souls (1962). This was actually a re-watch, but given it's been a decade since I last saw it, it was pretty delightful to get to re-experience it. A forgotten classic that seems to be recently re-remembered, this movie about a woman who survives a car accident that kills all of her friends only to be chased by death is a perfect gothic ghost story. It's so visually innovative too, every shot sublime, I can never recommend it highly enough.
Tumblr media
Lamb (2021). More gothic fairytale than horror, I really, really enjoyed this Icelandic film. The concept of a couple of farmers grieving the loss of their child only to find one of their sheep giving birth to a half-human, half-sheep child is strange, but also ends up really affecting and emotionally rich. It's a movie I've thought a lot about, especially as it really inspires a lot of thought about the treatment (and often kidnapping) of biracial children under imperialism . I am Team Mother Sheep.

I started watching «Lamb» (2021), and you know what... I decided not to look beyond the first chapter. I've enjoyed the characters' lives so much, and the atmosphere is mesmerizingly calm, that I really don't want to ruin it with what was "predicted" in the trailer. And the visual range is beautiful. Inspires me to draw Ada.
And small options ✨

Okay so I’m going to Texas Frightmare Weekend next year and I want to dress up for Saturday because it will be my birthday! I’m down to two costumes I just can’t decide.
Cottagecore Killer Cabbage Patch Doll
For this, I’m looking at making a brown braided pigtail yarn wig and wearing some oversized corduroy overalls preferably in olive green or brown maybe with some (small) pink floral patches on them and a chunky sweater underneath with a knife in hand. Only cons are that I should probably blood spatter the clothes and I don’t want tooo if I’m buying clothes I like 😭😭 although I could be right out of the box brand new. Also I am very self conscious about a yarn wig I feel like I’ll look silly. But it could be really fun.
Ada (Lamb)

That’s Ada if you don’t know her. I’m thinking chunky yellow sweater, flower crown, and olive green overalls to match the stems of the dandelions. She sticks to mostly blue and yellow but dang it I want green! Although the waders outfit is super cute. Only con is a hyper realistic latex sheep mask might get uncomfortable after awhile, but if i take it off I just have a good outfit!
(Reblog this for reach if you can 🥺💖)

Quick analysis of Lamb (2021)
Tumblr media
Ok, so all story weirdness aside...
(spoilers follow)
In trying to make sense of this film, I detected parallels between the new Ada and the original Ada. It seems that Maria had an affair with Petur years ago, which resulted in a child. Ingvar knew what had happened but pretended he didn't. He loved the first Ada like his own child. However, after they lost this child Ingvar chose to pretend that Ada never existed.
But Maria can't live inside a fantasy as easily as Ingvar does. She's the one who always takes on the burden of doing the dirty work in their relationship to make the lie work. She carries all the guilt and sin so Ingvar can be happy. I'm not saying that her having an affair wasn't wrong, just that covering it up costs her a lot of energy.
When the second Ada mysteriously arrives, Maria happily accepts it as the gift of a second chance, but it's even harder to cover up the lie of Ada's origin this time. Maria is first forced to deal with the real mother, after which Petur appears. He's a spector of the truth that can't be denied, but even he willingly plays along with the fantasy of Ada being his niece, at least for a while. Petur is 100% trouble, but he yearns for family and happiness as much as his brother. He just can't do that without trying to take what Ingvar has. Maria probably had to drive him away some time after the first Ada came, too.
In the end, Ingvar is shot in the throat (because he can never speak in the face of the truth that he knows), the second Ada is taken away by this truth, and Maria is left to deal with the aftermath alone, much as she did with her first child. The story comes full circle.
