I’m sorry Varchie and Brucas are the same ship in a different font.

Sigh another day, another racist post, why are so many (I know not all) BH stans like this? I block and unfollow and they come out of the woodwork. I swear they're like hydra. The things the accuse Tabitha of, thier wishes, headcannons and desires... And I have to ask, did everyone honestly think that all the OG couples would be endgame, all the HIGH SCHOOL couples would stay together? No one would move past those relationships clouded by thier traumas of the time? Outgrow thier SO? Really?
They seem to really get rowdy when big Jabitha episodes come around 👀
They take out their anger about their ship not happening on Tabitha/Jabitha. We've seen this kind of behavior ever since Tabitha's obvious introduction as Jughead's romantic partner. They don't take her seriously as a viable leading lady or love interest for Jughead, and that's on them. The way they view Tabitha and her character tells you everything you need to know.
Honestly, I don't know how you sit through season 4, watch Bughead (and Varchie) implode like they did and have the audacity confidence to think those ships are coming back, much less be endgame. The timejump didn't break up those pairings and those couples, Betty and Archie did (long before the timejump ever came to be). Betty and Archie and their feelings for each other have been teased every single season of the show, they were inevitable. It doesn't mean the old ships weren't good or don't have good moments, of course they do. But the ships were never locked in and set in stone, especially pre-timejump.
The only show I can think of where the OG couples stayed til the end is PLL and one of those couples included a literal groomer so... sometimes what's best for the characters is to let them grow and mature, not lock them in to the choices they made as teenagers.
I love adult Jughead, I think he is the best version of the character. I think Tabitha is his perfect match and I think he is the perfect partner for her. Jughead and Tabitha fit together seamlessly and they are so healthy as a couple. They are adorable and inspirational.
Some people can't handle seeing Jughead with a beautiful, confident, intelligent, driven, and compassionate black woman and it shows...
I've said it once and I'll say it again, the racist takes that pop up when Jabitha get content are best left ignored, they can argue with the wall. Tabitha is fantastic and Jughead Jones loves her with all his heart.

Curious to see how you’d rank every Riverdale musical episode
this ask has been in my inbox for months because I could not make up my mind whatsoever and had to rewatch all musical eps 2x each to decide.
Splitting rankings into categories for my own sake: Songs (ranked on both quality and integration), Plot (entertainment value of the storyline points featured), and Iconry (ratio of special/memorable/iconic lines and scenes)
#6. American Psycho
Songs ⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I remember somehow being underwhelmed when I first watched this because I had really hyped myself up after reading the episode description. But now in a post-50sdale world, I realize how lucky we were with this one. We got SlaughterCon, Cheryl and Kevin hexing Toni and Fangs, Betty being gay, Kevin not warning Betty in advance that he added a bit to his musical number where Doctor Curdle Jr dresses as TBK and then getting visibly annoyed with her when she interrupts it fearing for his life, Betty finally killing TBK and he’s literally just wrapped in duct tape and garbage bags, AS WELL AS Archie’s Labour Union all in one episode. However, since this IS a ranking of musical episodes, I’m afraid I can’t let the incredible plot compensate too much for the lack of strong musical bangers.
Stand out lines:
“It’s your dad’s knife. I bought it on eSlay.”
“Betty Cooper, are you hot for agent Drake?”
“You’re one of us. An American Psycho.”
Not a line but shoutout to Lili Reinhart’s boobs in You Are What You Wear.
#5. Carrie
Songs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cheryls heavily autotuned explosion into “THATS NOT MY NAAAAAAAME” will forever tickle me. And her finale drenching herself in blood and coming to her mother with the candelabra to threaten burning down their mansion for a second time is one of the top ten Cheryl Blossom moments for all time. Everything about the presence of Alice Cooper also kills me like she is IN this high school musical. Madchen I could listen to pitch correction software fighting for its life against your dulcet tones forever. I read in a Twitter thread by the duo who produces all the Riverdale music that Madchen had literally never sung in her entire life prior to this episode. And they still gave her a solo. Amazing. The plot doesn’t carry as much weight for me in this one but the I love the integration of the music, and it also gave us the first ever Beronica duet and Fifi appearance. Oh and rip Midge!
Stand Out Lines:
“I will not succumb to thespian terrorism!”
“I’m not the same girl who burned down Thornhill.” “Sure you are!”
“Nightmare child, what do you want from me?!”
#4. Next to Normal
Songs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️
This one has real emotional impact okay. It was genuinely moving. I love when the musical episodes tackle a huge range of plot lines and still try to apply the niche musical choice of the season to each of them. We have Cooper grieving & family choreography and spite-Jabitha and Cheryl attacking her mother with song & holy water and Varchie being useless and Britta becoming Cheryl’s little child servant/protege. Reggie is there too. Also all of the music hits for real. It’s a shame that “I Am The One” and “I’m Alive” had so much cut in the ep because the spectres of Polly and Charles are killing it on the harmonies in the full versions. I could listen to Lili Reinhart sing all day long. Above all though I think my favourite part is the uncanny photoshop of Alice and Betty and Polly in front of the Next to Normal Broadway poster.
Stand Out Lines:
“YOU’VE GOT SOME NERVE JUGHEAD, AND I’M JUST ALL NERVES!”
“I’m gonna eat in the garage.”
“You remind me of Hiram Lodge.” “I don’t know who that is. But please, have a Swelligrino for the road.”
#3. Heathers
Songs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Guys It’s so crazy that Midge literally died in the middle of our musical last year. Anyway time for Heathers! Something fun about this episode is that I first watched it before I was fully Riverdalepilled and was still foolishly rolling my eyes at the show while I watched with my mom and sister. I was like “guys Heathers is actually a great musical, it’s going to be hard for me to see what Riverdale does to it”. We began watching and very soon my mom and sister were commenting on the music. It quickly dawned on me that they were complaining about the aspects of the show that were more or less unchanged from the original musical. And I had a great epiphany moment where I realized 1) Heathers is sort of bad 2) if I loved Heathers the musical in earnest then why should I not love Riverdale? Heathers was actually PERFECTLY CRAFTED to be performed by the Riverdale cast. Anyway. This episode had a lot going for it. Lodge divorce arc straight into Veronica partying. Kevin’s sudden perm. Toni’s threesome fake out. Our favourite Chad Michael Murray Rhythmic cult clapping. And of course KJ Apa doing this
Tumblr media
Stand Out Lines
“Did you have a lobotomy for breakfast?”
“Here I invented red. I AM red. *snaps*”
“Evelyn called a closed rehearsal for select members in the Gargoyle Chamber.”
#2. Archie the Musical
Songs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This one had EVERYTHINGGGGGGGG. Fun with the meta narrative and original songs mixed with covers taken from various obscure and specific sources and by far some of the most fun choreography and sets of all musical episodes since they were able to be so free with it. Seeing Gay Kevin back in his natural habitat of directing the school musical was so heartwarming. Jughead and Reggie quitting immediately. Archie going left. And Archie going right. Bisexually. Julian demolishing Archie vocally every chance he gets. And knowing it. Also every single facial expression and mannerism that Julian has in this episode is god tier. Actually kj apa too. Actually also Lili and Camilla. SANDWICH? The loudest in-song sound effects we’ve ever experienced. Archie the happiest he’s ever been in his life on the back of Toni’s bike. BERONICA - PRIMAL AND INTENSE! My review is barely coherent because this one does fill me with silly giddy joy. Plot loses a star because how the hell are we expected to care about Gay Kevin’s divorcing parents. I know “ohh suffering isn’t a competition ohhh” Ethel just watched her parents get murdered by a milkman and no one sang for her.
Stand Out Lines:
“I don’t wanna be a drip, but it’s super distracting when my understudy is singing literally at the same time as me!”
“You completely captured the longing of being in a queer, interracial relationship in the 1950s.”
“Maybe there are other more emotionally complex mountains to climb.”
“The new Archie, Julian, he’s even better than the real Archie!”
#1. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Songs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Iconry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
On a 9 hour flight to Europe in the Summer I had all the Riverdale musical eps downloaded to rewatch and then noticed that among the plane’s complimentary movie selections was the original movie of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which was pure kismet. I decided to watch the movie for the first time prior to rewatching the Riverdale ep and I was blown away. Knowing the context of all the songs and musical they chose to include in the episode made everything so much more insane. The song about feeling like a stranger in your body after surgical malpractice being used for the Bughead conflict over Juggie prioritizing mysteries over finishing high school and Varchie conflict over Archie not telling Veronica about her dad’s epic fail at the gym. 20? something year old gay Kevin proclaiming WE ARE GENERATION Z before jumping into Random Number Generation. The BIZARRELY spliced version of the best ever rendition of Origin of Love all for BARCHIE FODDER?!? Actually all the rest of the songs were perfectly fitting no notes. Anyway hallway full of students in Hedwig drag one of the top Riverdale shots ever though I forever mourn KJ Apa’s absence. At least he got to kiss a man in this one. The plane hit turbulence while I watching the Midnight Radio scene but I was so happy witnessing it in that moment that I thought to myself “it would be ok if I died right now”.
Stand Out Lines:
“Writing a book report? Now I know how Sisyphus must have felt.”
“It celebrates identities, genders, expressions of all kinds.”
“[scoffs] How queer-phobic of you.”
“There’s a problem that comes once you get caught up on your homework. Your mind wanders and evil creeps back in.”
I was convinced Archie the Musical would come out on top for me due to the obscene level of euphoria I felt upon first experiencing it but after intensive review I do have to say Hedwig wins. Ultimately I miss the original timeline that much and I am all for the events that eventually tear apart everyone’s relationships and most of all it gave us Origin of Love full version Riverdale cast edition. But know that it is so so so so so close between the two. And honestly really all 6 are close in my heart as this exercise reminded me just how much the musical episodes are to watch and rewatch.

my unsolicited opinion on Riverdale friends-to-lovers arcs: Beronica works beautifully and Barchie doesn't.
at *all* points throughout the show, it is so apparent that Betty and Veronica love each other. they're both willing to put their romantic desire for Archie aside for the other's happiness. they're both there for each other, constantly and consistently. and when they kiss, it's almost as if nothing really changes; their love has *always* transcended the platonic/romantic divide.
genuine one-on-one platonic Barchie scenes are sparse, which makes the whole thing feel a little like they're settling for who they're "supposed" to love. like, they definitely love one another as friends, but they pretty consistently choose their romantic partners and/or other central friendship (Beronica/Jarchie) over one another. I feel like they only put each other *first* when they're dating.
interestingly! both Varchie and Bughead seem to genuinely support one another even when broken up. (these are both lovers-to-friends arcs, though, so the dynamic is a little different. but the *friends* part feels genuine, which makes me feel good about a potential reunion.)
I want friends-to-lovers that feel like they're finally naming what's been possible all along! that honor the serious relationships that came before them! that would've been best friends no matter what! that want the other one to be happy above all else!

we come back every time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
———
in hindsight, the fight was so stupid.
archie was given the opportunity to teach poetry for a semester in london. when he first told veronica, she was immediately supportive. sure, she didn’t like the idea of her husband being gone for so long, but it was a massive opportunity for him.
she was helping with some last minute packing the night before his flight, and saw that he packed some of the fine silverware. he said he’d need it in case he hosted anyone important from the university while he was in london, but she didn’t like the idea of him taking them.
it wasn’t that she thought he wouldn’t look after them, she genuinely thought he would. she just didn’t want to risk losing them in another country.
the fight wasn’t in any way aggressive, but they went to sleep before it could be resolved.
when veronica woke up the next morning, archie was already gone and the silverware he wanted to take was left out on the dining table.
that was when veronica knew she had to make things right.
with a small case containing half of their silverware on her lap, veronica had her driver take her to the airport to get to archie before his flight took off.
when the car finally pulled up, she found herself rushing through the doors to get passed security. it wasn’t easy getting through airport security with the silverware - beyond buying a boarding pass and the regular passport checks, they also checked to see if the knives were rounded before letting her through.
archie was just about to board the plane when veronica finally got to the waiting area.
“archie!” she called out.
the moment archie turned his attention to veronica, she darted towards him. however, the smile he had on his face stopped her in her tracks.
all of a sudden, the image of a bus was speeding through her head. archie was on it, heading off to war. betty was driving a car, and veronica was standing by the front seat, declaring her love to archie. because even though he hurt her, she knew that he loved her. and she hated the idea of ending their relationship with a quarrel.
“ronnie?” archie called out, pulling her away from the image.
veronica darted forward and wrapped her arms around him. somehow more determined to sort everything out from that vision.
“i’m sorry, archiekins. i don’t want to sit on a fight with you for months.” she said, looking up to examine his face. “of course you can take some of the silverware.”
“god, i’m going to miss you while i’m gone.” archie said, with a slight chuckle in his tone.

varchie appreciation week, day five - favourite scene.

Riverdale 7x20 - Goodbye, Riverdale (Spoilers)
Jesus, this was depressing. After seven years, Riverdale comes to an end. And I can absolutely guarantee that nobody ever expected it to end like this. That being said, while this is not the ending I would have chosen, I also can't say I dislike this ending. We watched these character going through year after year of hell and the fact that most of them have a good life and there is a happy-ish ending to this...well, I'm content with it. Riverdale, for me, probably will be the first four seasons, but I don't hate this ending.
Anyway, we start with an Eight Six year old Betty who's learned Jughead has passed away. Betty is now the last of the gang to survive. Betty wants to visit Riverdale one last time and her granddaughter promises to take her there the next day. That night Betty is visited by Angel/Writer Jughead who takes her back to the last day of high school so she can see her friends one last time. During these moments we find out what happened to all of the characters. And I'm just going to go through this real quick.
Ms. Andrews will fall in love with a woman who will live in the with Ms. Andrews until she passes away. Polly will end up having her twins (Juniper and Dagwood). Alice will eventually divorce Hal (I think, my cable screwed up and I missed part of this), become a flight attendant, and marry someone else.
During junior year of high school, Fangs records a hit single and is able to convince Midge's parents to let him marry her. Their happiness is short lived as, not long after high school, Fangs goes out on tour and is killed in a bus accident. Midge and her daughter will live off the royalties of Fang's two songs (right).
Pop's apparently dies before the kids graduate high school. That's the grave Betty is visiting. The writers clearly are choosing violence here.
Clay and Kevin move to Harlem together. Clay becomes a professor at Columbia (I think) and Kevin opens his own off Broadway production. Kevin will die of old age in his sleep and Clay will pass away a few weeks later sitting on a park bench.
Cheryl and Toni move west and live a more bohemian life. They have a son named Dale (after Riverdale). They will live a long and happy life together.
Reggie will go on to play basketball for the Lakers and then become the coach at Riverdale High. He has two sons who will run the Mantle used car lot. Reggie was buried in Duck Creek.
As for the core four, well they all decide during senior year to all just date each other. Yup. Well, maybe, as we never see anything happen between Archie and Jughead. After high school....
Veronica moves back to LA and becomes a big movie mogul. I don't think it's directly said, but it seems like she was the first of the four to go. I does seem like Betty, at least, looses touch with her over time.
I'm not going to go into the last Barchie scene. While I didn't particularly like that couple, what the writers did in that scene was nothing short of sadistic to those fans. But one could argue that same was done to Bughead and Varchie fans in season four. Anyway, Archie will go out west and find a woman that he decides to settle down with. He lives a long, good life with her and, when he dies, he's buried next to his father.
Jughead will create Jughead's Madhouse Magazine (Mad Magazine) and had a successful life as a writer/editor. He never marries.
Betty also creates her own magazine. (And late '60s/early '70s Betty's look is my favorite Betty look). Betty never married, but she did adopt a daughter. Which she considers her legacy, her family.
Anyway, Angel/Writer Jughead takes Betty back to the present. The next day, Betty's granddaughter takes her to Riverdale. As they pull into Pop's parking lot, the building is for sale, she discovers Betty has died.
But then young Betty steps out of a car as she has been transported to an functioning Pop's Restaurant. Jason is at the door (yep, the actor is back). And everyone is there (well, of the cast that still worked on the show). And as the story ends, Betty joins the other three at the table and in the Hereafter.
Like I said, not the way I imaged the show would ever end. Not the way I would have ended it. Still, it was a very bitter sweet ending. I shed some tears and, yeah, part of me is sad to see it end.
Of course, that part of me will soon be knocked unconscious by my sanity....

"varchie didn't get anything for 10 episodes and suddenly Archie needs to make a choice??" Oh how the world keeps spinning
WHAT DO YOU MEAAAAN NONNIE?
do you mean, perhaps, that from episode 5.08 to episode 5.19 b*rchie didn't get a single crumb and they swerved directions out of now-[gunshot]
no, because let's talk about it.
they pretended not to see the (confirmed btw) shift in the writing of s5 because it went in their favor. in that episode that they love to misinterpret, archie promised betty to be her friend and after that he wasn't there for her at all, didn't help her with polly, or with whatever she was going through, they simply didn't write them in, didn't give them a single longing look (that stupid 515 one can't count when he was bored out of his mind drinking coffee lol), or an acknowledgement, or anything. and still they ended the season together, right after veronica dumped him for reasons still very unclear (a choice, she said in s6, that she never presented him with in s5 but we move).
but then now in s7, they say varchie didn't get anything, but we can break it down:
7.01 - he was hit by a thunderbolt when he saw her. actual canon lines. he never felt like he'd met the right girl until he met her. even though he's known a certain someone his entire life.
7.02 - is completely infatuated with veronica, but goes to betty for advice. actually, you won't see me saying anything bad about this episode. it was good for both ships and highlighted their strengths and flaws. but! you can't deny that archie was falling for veronica, and got very hurt when apparently she didn't feel the same and wanted to play games. his first poem ever is for her. and it's a poem about how he dreams of her.
7.03 - after the whole dance fiasco, he does say veronica is too much for him and that they don't match, but he still is making eyes and very eager to kiss her in the same episode.
7.04 - he's told to look at betty. it's not something he does himself. it's not spontaneous. he goes to betty for advice, doesn't listen to her, and it's only when cheryl points it out that maybe the girl for him is next door. he writes her a poem too and never gives it to her, it is forgotten in the land of forgotten things. we learn that he dreams of living in california.
7.05 - fiction, but jughead writes about archie being torn between both girls and they end up teaming up to kill him. content is the same for both pairings.
7.06 - veronica is absolutely still into him even though he's now into betty. as usual, she lets them be and doesn't say anything. he's hell bent on seeing betty naked instead of, I don't know, giving her his poem! that he intended to do just the other day, archie invites betty to a peep show date. but okay, teens with hormones. there are varchie crumbs for veronica's side.
7.07 - betty's life is lowkey ruined by what they did and he doesn't defend her even though he feels bad about it. they do remain friends though because they've never not been friends. there is a little varchie crumb in the episode too (hey, crumbs are crumbs, remember when ba got zero in s5?)
7.08 - both betty and veronica watch archie be a loser. both betty and veronica (and archie) are into reggie. they give beggie more scenes than ba then.
7.09 - he's definitely eyeing veronica in the locker room. doesn't want to help her until reggie says he will, and sure some have interpreted it as "archie hates her", but i could say he was a bit bothered by reggie being so willing to help her.
7.10 - oh, not the double date episode. but let's talk about varchie. archie, still seemingly annoyed that reggie would want to date veronica, still seemingly annoyed that she keeps playing after what happened to him. doesn't pay attention to a single word betty says on their first date.
7.11 - their fanfic episode! childhood memories! porch scene! kiss! still, at the beginning of the episode we've got a couple of very pointed archie looks towards veronica. crumbs, right?
7.12 - after they kissed, archie was so worried with himself and reggie that he didn't go looking for betty, didn't pursue anything else with her, actually wrote about feeling like a ghost, and well, betty definitely was also not so thrilled about that kiss. and she was about to kiss veronica.
7.13 - archie watches veronica leave with the fbi. is it shocking, at the point, that he's always looking at her? anyway, his poem brings her to make a decision about her father and just the minimal display of "real" veronica and not the one that plays games, has archie twirling his feet. he doesn't think about betty in that moment. tunnel vision for each other, is the words the director used. when he realizes they did kiss, he's left all confused.
7.14 - archie seems to be torn between the girls again although that's not the main dilemma in his life, and he chooses himself instead of them, who choose each other over him (friends and a little more?).
so, maybe they didn't pay attention, but varchie did get crumbs. almost continuously throughout the season.
for people who claim ba had amazing buildup in S5B, S7 is almost a full meal for va compared to that?
mind you, all this happened while archie had (perhaps? do we believe it?) the emotional memory of being engaged to betty. and he still wanted veronica as well! lol
and just because it's 3am and I need to go to bed, let's just talk about the arguments
"he cheated on veronica and wrote betty a song, she rejected him!" and after realizing what he had done archie felt flaky, unsteady, unsure, and still chose to tell veronica that he loved her as he left town. seven years later, he was still holding on to their interrupted relationship.
"he wanted to have sex with betty since high school", yeah but then when they did it he wanted to keep it on the low and was happy being just her fuck buddy.
"betty didn't want more with him" he also didn't want more with betty and he felt like he should tell about his feelings for v before things got more confusing between them.
"he was unhappy with veronica" when? because he slept in the fire department once when he was a firefighter? lol veronica was unhappy with him not wanting to move on from riverdale. she walked out on him. he was drinking in a bar sad and alone after being dumped when he thought about betty again.
"he asked betty to marry him / betty was in his heaven", yes, he loves betty, and im not afraid to admit it. what i also know is that he never learned about veronica's lingering feelings for him. had he known, could it be different? we don't know. tabitha said she could grab her romantic future with him if she wanted. she didn't do anything. so who's to say they wouldn't end that in another BAV open thing? or change their minds again?
ANYWAY, this triangle hasn't been resolved in anywhere but vale. and vale was written in a loop by power source writer jughead. not much room for choice either.
//
tl;dr: they can say they swerved the direction of the season all they want but varchie was not NEARLY as forgotten as ba was in 5B, so nothing about this is surprising or crazy. archie loves both girls, always has, always will, and we will decide who he loves more. not him.

If OBX was produced by HBO, it would’ve been absolutely *chaotic*, and everyone watching would be thirsting even harder then they already are.
Let me tell you how this would've went.
They would've been showing cock and balls and tiddies every 30 minutes (obx taking place in a coastal town where they're always on the beach and half dressed? Hbo would've taken advantage like no tomorrow). Kie would've been canonically sexually involved with at least 2 of the boys at some point before or during when the show takes place because hbo just sucks like that. Pope would be dropping N bombs like crazy. That Topper and Sarah scene would've went way left field. That rose and jj scene would not only have been included but explicitly shown. Way way way more blood. They 100% would've given Rafe some internalized homophobia storyline. Kie and Sarah would've definitely physically fought before finally being friends again (and maybe even sleeping together at some point). Ward would be fucking somebody's daughter. Drug use scenes would be way more cinematic and ✨colorful✨. Rafe is fucking bitches left and right. Would've for sure gotten a scene of him and topper handling business in the same room right next to each other. Riara would definitely have been a confirmed thing at some point either in the past or present. John B and Sarah would be like varchie (I know that's the CW but it's the best comparison) where their relationship is really just boiled down to sex and sexual chemistry. Pope and JJ would've kissed at least once. Maybe while high. Oh and JJ is definitely killing his dad

HOW insane the writing of Riverdale got
I still love that show so much. And I am still not ready to say goodbye, even though it is now over.
I'll never see Cole Sprouse as Jughead again
I'll never see Camila Mendes as Veronica again
I'll never see Lili Reinhart as Betty again
I'll never see KJ Apa as Archie again
I'll never see Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl again
I'll never see Vanessa Morgan as Toni again
I'll never see Casey Cott as Kevin again
I'll never see another promo again
I'll never get the feeling of excitement again when a new episode airs
I'll never get to see some random ass new plot ever again.
This show has been my home for years. I found it when they were half way through season three.
There will never be a show like Riverdale ever again
There will be no cast like the Riverdale cast again
I'll never see new Choni scenes again
I'll never see new Bughead scenes again
I'll never see new Barchie scenes again
I'll never see new Varchie scenes again
Riverdale is over, and never returning. I won't get to wait a year or so, and be excited for a new season. No. There will never again be a new episode.
I'll admit, some of the ending was amazing, some of it was not.
Kevin and Clay got their happy ending, which was amazing.
But they put Jughead, Archie, Betty, and Veronica in the quad? For zero reason. That was irritating.
I think the death of Betty was beautifully portrayed as well.
But my favorite part of the ending?
Cheryl and Toni got their happy ending. After season five and six, I am so happy. They even had a son, named Dale. Hell, I will never get over them using Vanessa's son River to play a character named Dale. Absolutely genius!
Goodbye, Riverdale...

RD honestly feels like softcore now
Agreed. This show was already pretty sexual. We spent YEARS joking about this. About how Archie's abs were on display in any and all circumstances. About how Betty's first speaking scene was her in a bra. About how often Varchie had sex.
But this...this feels way different. This feels like grown men's masturbatory fantasies acted out. It was kinda cringey before. Now it is a show wholly dedicated to sex, to pretty young people having as much sex as possible. There is a creepy vibe here that just wasn't there before. The sex scenes are way more explicit, they are bringing children and grooming relationships into it, and then there was the entirety of 703, which I'm sure more than one person watched through their fingers in abject horror.
Before we could laugh about it. Now I watch or read about an episode and I want these writers in prison.

everyone on insta is like so mad there's no bughead or varchie and are like "what are these GARBAGE PAIRINGS 🤮🤮 we want bughead roberto! make riverdale good again!" and like. no one understands that the crack ships are literally just that. crack ships. they are not going to be endgame nor will they be endgame material, they are plot devices and there's still scenes between the three big ships as of season 6 finale in the trailer so like. also people are like "a gay man with a straight girl????? that's so fucked" (and vice versa) but being gay wasn't as open in the 50s and it was shamed so like yes lets have cheryl make out with women publicly and not be hated on for it. same with kevin. and they are in high school again so they're figuring out their feelings again and its like. the crack ships are not serious they are not real pairings that actually have a really strong love between them lets just let riverdale season 7 be silly pls thanks

Hi Ashton! I saw in your tags that Barchie is a notp for you and would love to hear why. I shipped Bughead but gave up in the show before Barchie ever got together :)
Oh god. Where to begin? I acknowledge that based on the pilot and the first couple of episodes of season 1, the idea of Betty and Archie together was fine. It wasn't particularly interesting, but at first they seemed to have a solid friendship that could have realistically developed into more if Archie only reciprocated Betty's feelings. Unfortunately, Riverdale basically handled every fucking aspect of their relationship poorly. For one thing, the friendship between Betty and Archie was rarely ever on display unless they were interacting during group scenes or their possible romance was being teased to create drama for the Bughead and Varchie pairings. So in spite of the fact nothing concrete happened between Betty and Archie until the end of season 4, there was nothing to lean on once the writers finally started to head in the BA direction. While the lack of on screen friendship should be blamed on both, Archie in particular showed little interest in Betty's life.
This relationship destroys Betty. The crux of Betty's feelings for Archie, as inconsistent as they are, is that Betty views Archie as this beacon of light that can never be extinguished due to him being pure of heart or some other thing that I disagree with. She romanticizes the idea of how things were before life got so complicated. In her eyes, these childhood memories that we never saw were untainted and good. As a child, Betty always imagined she'd end up with Archie, marrying him at eighteen years old. Teen Betty held on to this dream for a very long time, but was forced to face the truth that Archie didn't feel the same way. If I'm being generous, I'd say Archie considered Betty as a backup plan, but not much more beyond that. But by the end of season 1, Betty realized she wanted so much more for her life than being a power couple with Archie. Betty found real love with Jughead, someone who saw all of her, embracing both the lightness and darkness. Betty discovered a love for investigating mysteries and going down the rabbit hole in the name of justice. Betty likes making murder boards and searching the woods in the middle of the night. Part of the reason for this is that Betty is inherently attracted to darker aspects of life. Betty struggles a lot to accept these sides of herself as her awful, abusive family tells her over and over that she's the problem and the one bringing misery to everyone's lives as she strives to help and improve things for her family. Based on the way she was written during seasons 1-4 prior to the cheating, it came across like Betty was beginning to accept these sides of herself, proud of the person she was with Jughead by her side.
But the moment things with Jughead seemed as though they were uncertain, as flimsy as the issue was (Jughead not doing his homework), Betty turned to Archie to escape from the reality of life. That basically sums up what Archie is to Betty during the adult years as well. When Betty finally confesses to Jughead what happened with Archie, it breaks them. The communication seems to die then and there with both remaining together passively until Betty leaves for college. We later see that Betty and Jughead reconnected to some degree during their freshmen year of college, talking and texting while in relationships with others, essentially engaging in an emotional affair. The timeline from there is confusing because the show could never decide when exactly Jughead left Betty the voicemail, but it seems clear that Betty's life kind of fell apart after that? She ends up having an affair with a married man (who might have turned out to be a serial killer? Seasons 5-7 are kind of a blur for me) and is eventually held captive by the Trash Bag Killer. From there, we see that Betty has trauma over this. She refuses to deal or properly feel her emotions. Jughead is off limits. They still aren't talking and the divide between them has only grown bigger after the voicemail where Betty was led to believe Jughead hated her and thought she was a terrible person, not realizing he'd spiraled into alcoholism and drug use. Archie could never be alone and teenage Betty wanted to fuck Archie once upon a time, so why not? So they enter a friends with benefits relationship that ends up being much more about the benefits and filling a void than it is being actual friends to one another. Betty doesn't want Archie to be this person for her. He makes her feel good and comforted in the moment, but ultimately she's aware the two of them don't work. Not only that, but Archie verbalizes to his army friend that he does NOT want to be there emotionally for Betty. Much like in season 2 after their kiss, Archie went back to Veronica because that's where his heart led him.
Betty continues to emotionally spiral and doesn't seem to improve much over the course of the season. Archie doesn't seem to notice or care. Jughead does. Their interaction is limited, but there's a semblance of a rebuilding phase where the two renew their friendship and go back to investigating together. While Betty's feelings for Jughead are kept ambiguous because again, her emotions are being kept close to her chest and there's a lot she isn't saying or dealing with. Jughead, on the other hand, makes it clear multiple times throughout the season that he hasn't moved past his breakup with Betty and had already forgiven Betty by the time he returned to Riverdale even if he wasn't saying it. Then, completely out of nowhere, Jughead is singing about how he's "perfect" for Tabitha, a song that Bughead fans have frequently said fits Bughead far better. Due to Veronica breaking things off with Archie because she wanted to return to New York, something also totally random that never came to pass, a day drinking Archie decided that he wanted to sleep with his old pal Betty again so they basically get back together at the end of season 5 with zero build up. We don't know why Betty defaults back to Archie. Cheryl did some sort of spell that blatantly had an effect on the plot, though that's never addressed. Then, the characters are in Rivervale, and Betty murders Archie twice and shares a big moment with Jughead where they almost fuck to save the world. Back in regular Riverdale once the universes have been separated, Betty and Archie enter an official relationship. Everything is always about Archie. If there's ever any sort of conflict, Betty will be the one to sacrifice and to change her stance to make things easier for Archie. There's at least one scene where Betty is ranting about something bothering her and Archie is just sitting there like it doesn't matter to him. 99% of their conversations revolved around Archie wanting to fuck or save the town and get rid of Percival Pickens for good. Midway through the season, Betty had another crisis about fearing she was evil, but Archie (basically ripping off something Jughead said at the end of season 2; this also happened to be a flashback the audience had just seen during the episode where Betty and Jughead were going over Betty's past memories together, including multiple iconic Bughead moments) reassured Betty she was a good person, citing a childhood memory the audience had never seen to prove his point. And that's another thing! Rather than showing us much of anything between Betty and Archie in the present to convince us they were meant to be together or were compatible in any way, we just hear about random childhood memories. Everything Betty and Archie ever did revolved around looking back fondly on their so-called idyllic childhoods or having sex. Season 6 Betty came across as such a lesser version of herself. She was still herself, but it was as if she was holding back. It's like, maybe Betty doesn't want to get married? Can't have that! Archie has to settle down in Riverdale and recreate his father's life, meaning Betty needs to get over herself and shove her round self into a square peg so that all of Archie's dreams come true. I mean, multiple times during season 6, Archie was treated as akin to the savior of Riverdale while Betty was legitimately referred to as the "harlot of Babylon". Archie was perfect and indestructible while Betty was dark and dirty and needed to be cleansed before she could be accepted into Heaven. Basically, Archie is perfect as is and doesn't need to adjust himself in the slightest to become a better partner for Betty. But, Betty needs to change nearly everything about herself, reverting back to wanting things that only made sense to kid Betty, all to fulfill some old dream about settling down with Archie that the real Betty hadn't wanted in years. Not to mention the fact that as early as season 1, Betty resented being the perfect girl next door. Well, with Archie, that's basically all she was.
Betty and Archie were never going to work together, but the fact that Betty tried so hard to mold herself into some perfect, cookie cutter housewife, maternal figure all so Archie could have the white picket fence and the 2.5 kids makes me FURIOUS. It was incredibly misogynistic, and honestly led to me despising Archie. Betty deserved so much better. As fucked up and as gross as the "horny Betty" writing for the majority of season 7 was, I'm just relieved that Betty once again reiterated that she and Archie wanted different things and definitively didn't end up together.
