This is one of my fav scenes. "Cargo pilot" Lance takes charge, comes up with a plan, and Keith listens (much to Keith's surprise). It's everything Lance always wanted. I think it was pretty arguable that s1 was setting up BP Lance/RP Keith as endgame. Keith's expressions are top notch here too, too bad they ditched this version of Keith in the end...

What if a not so standard Klance beauty and the beast au? Stay with me here we got a lot to breakdown: Keith is a prince that hunts to protect his people and Lance is a shape shifting nymph with a horrifying natural form.
Keith doesn't always hunt but when he does it's to protect the kingdom his parents had loved so dearly so when the villagers on the outskirts come to him begging for aid he can do nothing but listen to their tales
It's fantastical. It's mysterious. Keith isn't sure he believed them that this thing lurking in the trees is a monster until he sees it on patrol with his own two eyes
It's eyes glow in the dark, the form is solid but moves as if it's liquid, it can shift with the light and smells like the lake mud.
The villagers complain the beast drowns their crops, haunts them, and keeps them awake at night with the stench and stress alone. Keiths mission goes from patrol to a hunt. He goes for months trying to catch the beast and fails every time.
It's in a tavern after another failed hunt that he meets Lance. Lance who cheers him right up, Lance who challenges him to a stupid game of darts, Lance with eyes bluer than the enchanted lake.
He's everything Keith could want and more. They end the evening with bickering and challenges. They run into each other in every crowd and every street.
Seeing Lance every few days quickly becomes the highlight of Keith's days. The hunt is put on standby as the sightings dwindled and Keith finally finds the time to fall in love
Their romance is a whirlwind, one that all the folks of the kingdom fawns over. Where there is Keith there is Lance, where there is blue there is red. Before long they are engaged and Keith knows above all else he wants this to be the rest of his life, lance and a family of his own.
It's as they get ready for the engagement ball that he thinks of the beasts again. How foolish could he be, trying to start a family when a monster like that still roams free?
The hunts start anew and it starts with a vengeance. Keith is determined to end this before their ball so he goes out every evening to hunt with his knights.
Lance always refuses to go, he looks worried but never says why. Keith figures it's the danger of it all, but he should've known better.
They fight about it, him and Lance. It's the worst fight they've ever had, bad enough that Keith fears Lance will actually leave. Neither is able to talk it out and it's lance that ends it all with fierce eyes and a deal "end the hunt and I won't leave. I'll stay forever if you end the hunt Keith."
"I have people to care for Lance!"
"Then put up a fence! O-or a barrier! This thing you're hunting has never hurt anyone. Whatever it is belongs to the forest we can't anger the forest." Lances voice shakes through his conviction, so passionate in his belief. He looks down at his feet on the ground, clenching Keith's hand in his "if we leave it alone it'll do the same. We shouldn't fear something just because we don't understand.....please."
Keith can't bare to say no, not when his heart is so distraught over this "I promise, I'll stop the hunt I promise."
The engagement ball goes off without a hitch, all eyes on them and the love between them. If only it'd last forever.
Keith sees the beast when coming back from a trip, it's further than the original sightings were and much closer to the castle his fiance resides in. He knows he promised Lance but how would he know, now was the time to free them all from this thing so they'd never have to worry again. He aims the enchanted arrow made specially for things that reside in the enchanted forest and his aim is true.
The arrow strikes clean through the beasts chest it shrieks in pain, writhing and clawing at the ground. Keith follows as it tries and fails an escape ending clear in the castle gardens where Lances roses reside.
The beast weakly collapses, finally giving up as Keith approaches the creature. What he never expected was for it to transform. Right before Keith's very eyes the creature shifts into his beloved. Into his Lance.
Wind gushes, growing angrier with every shallow breath Lance takes and Keith collapses as his side "what-"
His beloved begs to the wind for Keith to be unharmed as he bleeds into his very own roses but the god of the forest is furious his son was harmed like this....
"lance please don't go- please don't leave me I'm sorry!"
That he was feared like this....
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry please-"
That he was deemed a beast like this....
"You've treated him like a beast when he loved you, for that you will know the same fate."
Keith sobs, holding his loves dying body in his arms and at Lance's final breath the castle is swallowed by the forest, overtaken with roots and trees. Plants and vines.
Lance becomes a monument fueled by the magic within the enchanted arrow that shimmers gold in his heart.
The knights are turned to stone and Keith, the Prince of the Galra....is turned into a beast.
"Only love can save you."
~*~
No one remembers the kingdom, no one remembers the Prince nor his family but hundreds of years pass and in a small village is next part of the story.
The McClains are a family of 6, a Merchant father with his two daughters and three sons. The most beloved of them is their youngest, Lance.
Lance is known as their free spirit, a dreamer, a lover at heart. Everything he does is to make someone smile. So when his father leaves on a trip through the forest the only thing he request is a rose.
The village doesn't grow roses, any that try fail. every variety dies here it's a tale spread far and wide. The legends say they fail to grow because of a lovers betrayal. No one knows what the betrayal was but it was deemed so cruel that the gods forbade anyone else to have roses. Why? Well, no one is sure, it's speculated that roses were born from these lovers and at the loss of their love the roses died with it.
Either way, legends or not, it's popular for those that travel far to bring some back as proof of the journey and Lance wants nothing more than to see the beauty of one.
With a smile father goes, saying goodbye to all his childrenwith a list of things his children want.
Veronica asks for new books, Rachel for new fabrics. Marco and Luis ask for new bows and arrows and Papa McClain finds all this and more when he stumbles across an abandoned castle.
There's riches in the dusted rooms. Books in themassive library. The armory holds more bows, arrows, swords and daggers than he'd ever seen before.
Most of all, there's a flourishing rose garden.
The roses are so red, so perfect that Papa McClain can't believe his eyes. They are fragrant in the way stories describe them and he knows this is something Lance would love without a doubt.
He briefly considers taking a whole array of them for each of the children but settles on just the one. He can bring Lance back one day and they can all enjoy the garden as a family.
Just as he cuts the thorns away from a rose a deep sound echos. It's one he can feel in his chest, it rumbles and crackles in ways he can't identify. Unlike a lion, unlike a bear, the form that radiates the sound unearthly looms in the bushes.
Papa McClain drops the rose, drops the basket full of things for his children and he begs this creature to stay away.
The beast circles him and in the dim lighting he can't tell what this creature is. But, it's sounds are enough to tell Papa McClain that it's dangerous.
"You've touched his roses..." The voice rumbles, unpleasant.
"i-im sorry I didn't know they belonged to anyone-"
He watches the beast lean down to pick up the rose that had been dropped. Though the appearance of a monster, the clawed hands hold the discarded rose so softly
"Get out..."
Papa McClain didn't need to be told twice he gathers his wits and runs through the forest, through the trees and the thorns and he doesn't stop until he reaches home.
Through his tale to the children and through the night he can't help but think: the beasts looked sad at that plucked rose.
~*~
They we're forbidden from going through the forest after what their father told them. Yet when a merchant trip requires passage back through their father takes Luis with him.
None of them expected Luis to run back alone saying that father had been taken prisoner.
"T-the beast it was that beast from father's tales! It claimed he'd returned to harm the roses again and took him captive!"
"What do we do?" Rachel asks nervously, watching Marco gather the hunting supplies "we can't just go, what if we're captured too?!"
"We have to do something rach! We can't just leave him there."
Veronica scoffs, annoyed "well, if it's over roses then why doesn't lance go get him? He's the one that asked-"
"Don't start the blame game! It'll only cause more problems"
"Well WE didn't ask for something that got out father imprisoned Marco!"
"ENOUGH" all turn to look at Lance "I'll go."
A course of "no" "you can't go!" "Don't be stupid lance-" rain down as he grabs his cloak at the door
"Vera is right. I asked for the rose and papi got in trouble for it. The least I can do it help plead his case."
Veronica has the grace to look a bit guilty "just be safe ok Leandro?"
Lance hugs every one of his siblings "I'll be back before you know it. Just you wait." Then he's out the door on his favorite horse, his dearest Blue.
Lance reached the castle by nightfall and by the time the moon starts to fall he has his father set free on one condition
"A life for a rose" said the deep rumble.
And though the sound radiated deep within Lances chest, rumbling in unatural ways, he accepts the terms.
Lance watches his father flee the forest with blue in tow from the tower balcony. He'd agreed to take his father's place but to who....he isn't sure, for he never saw the beast. Lance only heard his voice echo through the abandoned halls.
For days he only feels eyes watching his every move. Watching as he climbs through the tangles roots and vines, watching as he explores the entangled halls and sprawling rooms.
Everyday a new outfit is placed in lances rooms, and every evening he's at a dinner table set for many yet eats alone.
This entire thing is... bizarre to say the least.
The clothes fit perfectly, the food is always to his liking. He's never once seen this beast and it annoys him, it irks him actually.
How dare this thing take him prisoner yet avoid him?? Is treating him in this way a game? Is it to make lance too comfortable, so comfortable, that he won't fight back when the time comes?
Well! Jokes on the beast then! Bc lance? Oh- he isn't giving up in the slightest!
Lance makes it a mission to snoop harder than before, to be more annoying than before. Vera always said he could talk their ears off and into a grave so lance does just that.
He talks.
And talks, and talks....and talks some more.
To the sky, to the walls, to the gardens and the frogs.
all until one day the beast snaps out from those shadows he resides, growling deep and angry "SHUT UP!"
Lance whirls around to stand eye to eye, toe to toe with this beast "make me!"
Lance tries not to flinch back, tries not to scream or flee. Bc for the first time in days he's face to face with his captor, with the beast that started this whole thing.
It's bigger than Lance, clawed hands...or are they paws? Glowing eyes that swirl purple but the most startling is the face. It's not quite a cat, wolf or a bear, yet has large teeth and fangs. This creature is nothing like any animal seen within veronicas research books
It moves as if it isn't solid, the light makes its form shift and dance. There's horns and bone protruding out with the rest of its body looking like shadow that's been scar covered. (Think Elias vibes)
"I could throw you to the wolves!"
At that lance laughs "yeah right! You can't throw the prisoner away that defeats the purpose of having any-"
"Why are you like this!?"
"why are you like this?!" Lance counters and at that the beast pauses, almost ashamed.
He observes the beast for a moment and realizes something "hey, what's ur name big guy?"
A huff "Keith...I wa-am, Keith."
Lance smiles, warily "Keith, who names a beast Keith?"
At that, the beginnings of an odd friendship blooms (possibly something more...)
"I don't know, who names an idiot lance?"
Lance gasps "TAKE THAT BACK!"

Voltrom Ghost Whisperer AU - Part 7
1 2 3 4 5 6
Allura decided to skip town the next day and drove to the next one over. After knowing the last name of the family who previously owned her house, and getting a name out of Keith, a quick Google search for Lance McClain quickly told her he went to high school in the next town over. She had no idea how he was going to react to her, but she couldn't let Keith just roam without rest for all eternity.
She arrived at the school just as the bell rang and the kids began to leave for the day. She recognized Lance when he came out of the building, flanked by two other teens. She didn't want them to think she was a creep, but... taking a deep breathe to strengthen her resolve, she exited the car.
"Lance McClain?" She called when he was close enough. He turned around and threw her a flirty smile and a wink.
"Who's asking?" He asked, and had the gall to stare her up and down.
She raised an eyebrow and replied, "Someone way too old for you."
Lance's friends laughed and he, good naturedly, shoved them a bit. Then he turned to her.
"What can I do for you?"
"I hope this doesn't come off as too weird or anything, but I'm a friend of the Koganes and I haven't been able to get in touch with them," she began and took note of how he became stiff and his face lost all color, "someone told me your family used to be closed to them, so... I was hoping..."
"Lance, are you okay, man?" The larger one of his friends said as he put a hand on his shoulder. The smaller one stepped in between Lance and Allura in a protective posture.
"Yeah... yeah, I'm ok," Lance replied, but his countenance said differently, "I just... I need to sit down."
Lance shakily walked to a bench on the side of the road, and his friends followed. Allura did too, but slower and deliberately giving them space. Allura saw Lance take several deep breaths while his friends gave her the stink eye.
"I'm sorry," she said sincerely, "I didn't mean to upset you."
"No, it's... it's fine, it's just... I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Mr. Kogane died a few years ago..." Lance replied.
"Oh, I'm so sorry."
"You said you knew him?" He asked then.
Allura hated herself a bit for lying, "something like that, but it was a long time ago."
Lance looked at her closely, and once again his eyes travelled up and down but this time it seemed to have a purpose. He observed her for longer, too, enough to make her uncomfortable.
"Are you Keith's mother?" He finally asked, and his voice shook, and Allura didn't think she was imagining the tears pooling in his eyes. Keith would be sixteen, now. Sixteen years ago, Allura would have been sixteen or seventeen years old herself. A bit of a stretch but not impossible for her to have conceived and given Keith up, so she could see how he reached that conclusion.
She had no frame of reference for how old Sargeant Kogane had been when he died.
"No, I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I'm just a family friend, that's all. I'm from England, so we weren't able to meet very often," she answered.
"I don't remember ever seeing you or hearing about you, and we were pretty close," Lance mentioned. He tried to appear nonchalant, but it seemed forced.
"Is that so? Well, I-"
"I think you're lying," he continued and didn't let her speak. What could Allura say? She was lying, but only because she wanted to help Keith move on.
"I think you're a reporter," the short one of his friends pipped in, "we've had some of them come sniffing around over the hears. They never claimed to be related to a dead family, though. That's a new low for your kind."
"I'm not a reporter," Allura said and bristled, "if you must know the truth, I just moved here from England and I bought your house. That's why I'm here."
That seemed to take all three teens by surprise, and Allura internally celebrated her small victory.
"I don't know how I can help you, lady," Lance said, frowning, "my dad would know more about the house if there's anything you want to know about it."
"It's not the house I'm having an issue with, but..."
The short one raised an eyebrow and didn't cut Lance any slack, "But?"
Allura sighed, and relented, "Before you say anything, just... I know how this is going to sound. I know perfectly well what it looks like. Therefore, I'm prefacing this by saying that I'm not after anything, no money, no nothing. Just... keep an open mind?"
"You're beginning to sound very suspicious," the larger kid said.
"Beginning?" The shorter one scoffed.
"I'm listening," Lance replied, looking curious and intrigued.
"I have a guest in my house," she began.
"So?" Lance asked, "Good for you."
"It's an unwanted guest. Every day, around dusk, he arrives in my house and screams at me get out. The other day he blew out my light bulb."
"And how is this Lance's problem?" The large kid asked. Allura ignored him and carried in.
"He is small, about this tall, around ten years old. He has messy, longish, about here more or less, black hair. He has violet eyes, quite unique I must say," as she spoke, Lance's eyes progressively widened in something akin to horror, "he's wearing black, knee-long trousers, a white shirt and a-"
"Red jacket," Lance finished for her.
"He told me his name."
"No," Lance shook his head and stood up, grief making his face scrunch up as he paced and wrung his hands, "no, that's impossible."
"He also told me your name," Allura continued.
"No! No, you're lying!"
"Lance, what-?"
"Lance!"
Allura spoke above them, "I know it's hard to believe, but he's lost and he's looking for you. He's been waiting."
"I have to... I have to go," Lance said and took off running away from the school grounds. The larger kid took off after him, clearly worried, barely sparing Allura a glance. The smaller one, however, rounded on her with a fierce glare.
"What's your deal, huh?" She yelled, "what do you want from him?"
"He understood what I was trying to tell him just fine. If she wants to tell you, it's up to him," Allura answered.
"No, you don't get to pull that card on me," she said, "whatever you said clearly affected him and I want to know why."
"Then ask him."
"Stay away from us," the kid spat at her, "or I'll call the police."

Fanart of @bosstoaster ‘s Ryou & Shiro from her vld fanfic series “Don’t Let’s Start” and “Don’t Let’s Start Adjacent” on ao3! It’s literally one of my all time favourites and also one of the first fics I read in my life, so I finally decided to draw the twins!
Aaaand since “Theseus’s Ship” was the reason I got into the funny train men fandom, it was only fitting to throw both these things in the blender & see what would happen...

I'm gonna say something controversial and I'm sorry but I need to say it. The way stranger things fans treat byler is the same exact way voltron fans treated klance.

you were here for voltron?? gosh me too. that was a wild time. They took the crown for queer bait for real. Ever since then I am SUPER vigilant about how marketing and socials promos characters and couples, official or otherwise. Not that Stranger Things promo with byler will ever get to that point, but they've started to cross the line into bait. And during Pride Month of all times!
IVE BEEN HERE SINCE 2016… :(
voltron absolutely ruined little queer me. the baiting from not just social media teams but VAs and crew… only for them to not only say a big FU to kl*nce but also promote shiros gay love interest WHO THEY KILLED IMMEDIATELY AND GAVE THEM NO MEANINGFUL SCREENTIME… AND GAVE SHIRO A RANDOM HUSBAND IN THE END CREDITS… absolutely insane i will never forgive lauren montgomery and jds for it
but yeah since then i’ve been super pessimistic about any follow through for queer relationships in mainstream media unfortunately, especially when they start using it as promo material to this extent. big corps will do anything to increase viewership, including queerbait, and it’s no coincidence that they’re doing so during pride month.

Okay, this is 1600 words of (positive!) meta regarding the OFMD finale. Included is character analysis and a treatise on why a certain trope people keep throwing around does not apply here.
This is of course just my take, and I'm sure people will disagree, but I needed to get this out. Apologies if it comes off disjointed, I've had like no sleep.
Spoilers within, obviously. You have been warned. Heed the tags. I didn't tag any characters because I consider it a spoiler, but you know who this is about.
Listen. Listen.
Let me start off by saying I have been where you are. I’ve had beloved characters die, either because it was important to the narrative or for shock value. I’ve been there, so I’m not coming at this without empathy. I’m not an Izzy hater. I loved him as a character. I’m truly sad to see him go.
But from what I’m seeing around Twitter and tumblr, some of you do not understand the role of an antagonist in a story.
Izzy was always meant to die. The moment he said, in the first season, “the only retirement we get is death,” I knew he was meant to die in the end. The foreshadowing ran through both seasons. Izzy was the true antagonist of S1. He was there to keep Blackbeard tethered when he started pulling away, and yet he also set the plot in motion. He inadvertently introduced Blackbeard to the person who let him be just Ed. He put Ed on his own path to redemption without even knowing it.
S1 ended with Izzy getting what he wanted as Ed lost everything he had. S2 was about Izzy coming to terms with the fact that he’d gone too far, he’d turned Ed into a monster. It wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted Blackbeard back, just like old times. Instead, he got the Kraken, and it was more than he bargained for.
Especially after it cost him his leg and he realized how far gone Ed really was. The conversation that ended with Izzy’s half-assed suicide attempt was the final blow to Izzy—Ed really didn’t seem to care anymore. Where Izzy wanted him to stop giving a shit about his silly boyfriend, he instead got a Blackbeard who didn’t care about anything, and he was apparently now included in that category.
(I said half-assed suicide attempt because Izzy wasn’t meant to die then, THAT would have been an empty, pointless death. It wouldn’t have taught Ed anything—in fact, all it did was make him more self-destructive, which was Izzy’s purpose to the narrative, but not his endgame. That Ed thought Izzy killed himself pushed Ed to the brink. Ed wanted to die and take every scrap of Blackbeard with him. Had Izzy successfully killed himself, Ed and the Revenge would be at the bottom of the ocean.
It wasn’t until the crew left Izzy the unicorn leg that he realized the power of compassion, the incredible act of grace from a crew that suffered so much from Izzy’s own machinations and didn't need to forgive him. It moved him to tears, and it moved him to accept that maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to let people in, to let himself be cared for. It was a foreign concept and something Izzy likely hadn’t experienced since losing his family (I fully expect a shit ton of fanfic of Izzy’s life before piracy).
Israel Hands found the capacity to let love all the way in and by god, did he pursue it.
But, again, Izzy was always meant to die, and I’m glad they stuck to the narrative they set out with instead of placating fandom and letting our influence dictate how they told this story That’s never good, trust me. Fandom should not influence a creator’s decisions regarding their own characters. It rarely if ever ends well.
[Stares in Voltron S8]
And I see a lot of people out here throwing the “bury your gays” phrase around—I beg you, please look up the definition of the trope. Izzy didn’t die because he was queer, he didn’t die because of his disability. He wasn’t one half of the only queer couple in the show fridged for shock value. He wasn’t killed off due to pressure from conservative viewers. He wasn’t the only queer, disabled character.
They didn’t kill off Lucius, or Jackie, or Wee John. Would you be as outraged if it was any of them?
Killing Eve is bury your gays. Supernatural is bury your gays. Pretty much any film, book, TV show, whatever, where a queer character dies because they’re queer, of AIDs, to further the narrative for a straight person, etc—that is burying your gays.
Izzy’s death was none of those things. Izzy’s death had meaning.
Izzy’s death freed Ed from the Blackbeard persona. It finally forced Izzy to say the things he couldn’t say until he realized it was his last chance. Izzy was also tired. I honestly think he stuck it out for Ed’s sake, because he was afraid to let Blackbeard go without making sure Ed would be ok.
He loved the idea of Blackbeard, but over time, he learned to love Ed. He finally understood what Ed tried to tell him the whole time.
“Fuck off, you twat. You’re surrounded by family.”
You’re safe. You’re loved. You don’t need me anymore. You don’t need to be reminded of who you’re capable of being, you need the people who will guide you to who you will become, and I’m not one of them.
I know a lot of Izzy fans are stung by his death, some of you are deeply upset. I get that. Like I said, I’ve been there. Sirius’s death made me throw that fucking book across the room. That Fucking Woman™ killed off my entire OTP, purely for shock value and, imho, a direct response to shippers. Trust me, I have felt betrayed by a creator for their decisions.
But I need you to understand that no, this was not a personal attack, this was not malicious, this was not “bury your gays." A show that celebrates queerness and diversity is not suddenly homophobic and ableist because your favorite character died and happened to be both of those things. But when the majority of your cast of characters is different in some way, and they’re in a show about 18th century pirates, you have to accept that one of them could, in fact, die. “Anyone Can Die” is also a trope and the more accurate one to describe E8.
If only being queer and disabled made you invincible.
Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
And no, I’m not an Izzy hater. I loved him, I loved him as an antagonist, and I loved his redemption arc. He was fascinating and Con put his whole O’Nussy into that part. I’m sorry to see him go, but as a mystery writer who often has to kill off beloved characters, I understand that he served the purpose he had from the beginning.
I swear, if some of you had your way, there’d be no conflict at all in any form of media. This what a steady diet of nothing but fanfic gets you. This is not a fluffy one-shot with magical healing dick and a happy ending where everyone sails off into the sunset. If that’s what you wanted, what you headcanoned, you did this to yourself. It’s not David et al’s fault that we took that character and babygirled him. That’s the risk we take when we decide to love a specific character, when we take a genuinely terrible person (in S1) and woobify him.
So, please stop harassing and attacking David, Alex, et al. David did not and should not change his story to placate us. The fact he went ahead with it despite the backlash I’m sure he expected makes me respect him as a creator even more.
Anyway, I’m going to revel that we have three (!) queer relationships with happy endings where one or both didn’t immediately die (again, the actual definition of “bury your gays”) and that we got at least two seasons of a little show that celebrated individualism, diversity, queerness, compassion, and love.
In the end, it all came down to love.
“There he is.”
Goodbye, Blackbeard.
Hello, Ed.

Au where Lance is a storyteller turned writer that ends up seeing visions of real murders he has to break the cycle for before it's too late.
But he doesn't know that just yet.
It all starts with dolls. When lance was little he'd watch in awe as his elder sisters played with pretty dolls, their glossy hair and colorful tiny clothes mesmerizing to his young eyes. He was never allowed to play with them himself so he'd craft intricate stories for them in his head instead.
When his abuela found out she'd gifted lance her own collection, a beautiful set of vintage dolls all his own. With those dolls his stories continued on in his mind. As he himself aged he grew his collection himself.
When Rachel died, murdered with no answers, he kept her dolls too and gifted them back to the two daughters she'd left behind in his care.
His bf at the time helped all he could, he was a kind man Lance gad met in college. By then they'd dated for two years, by then he was a part of the family. To help the girls feel truly settled through Lances grief, his bf would do everything to make the girls feel at home.
Many therapy sessions, long nights and tears later Lance finds himself desperately retelling the stories he'd crafted for those dolls to the 5 and 7 year old in hopes it's enough to get them to bed.
To Lances surprise, It works.
So every night no matter their age Lance would tell his nieces, now daughters, stories to help them cope.
It's his boyfriend that suggest it first, for lance to write these stories out and in doing so even more details pour out into the pages he writes on.
Before long years pass and the girls can read these stories themselves, they ask for more, they call both Lance and his long-term Bf dad and it both warms his heart just as much as it shatters it.
The girls are 10 and 12 when lance hears from a publisher for the first time.
His first books are published without much flourish and the small family of four celebrates anyways.
The first time he sees his books out in the wild Lance is in awe. His bf simply smiles at him and encouraged him to continue.
So he does.
Things are well, if Lance ignored the screaming in his ear.
Lances happy little life is haunted by dreams that aren't quite dreams. He isn't sure what to call them. Visions? Nightmares? All he knows is they're vivid enough and they grow more frequent and disturbing as time passes.
He hasn't told anyone of them since the grief counseling years ago. He had to appear as sane as possible for the Girls sake. Lance refused to let anyone else have custody of them so he simply had to deal.
He'd talk to his lover about them had the last time not felt so....off.
Lance had laid in the man's arms describing the icy terror he'd feel from the images his head crafted.
How he'd always see a dead body, how it would be swallowed by the wet earth surrounded by pine and how it looked like his sister or her favored dolls.
And the man that had always been his biggest support looked at lance in fear for the very first time. "are you sure you're ok?"
Lance had to smile and say "yeah, it's just a reoccurring nightmare I think"
After that those "nightmares" started happening during the day, quick flashes of cold damp earth, a deep hole in the ground, disfigured bodies slowly growing in number.
It's no longer just his sister.
All had looked like dolls for the briefest moment.
He doesn't know what to make of it. So, Lance ignores it.
Things move forward as they always will. The youngest of his daughters takes the last name Clark because "Alana already has the McClain name! Daddy doesn't have anyone with his name so if I have it then both our dad's are honored."
His bf is overjoyed to be loved so deeply she'd want such a thing. Their happy little family growing more intertwined. Two perfect daughters with two perfect last names for their two perfect dads.
If only their happiness has lasted.
Their breakup was the shock of everyone that knew them both. It didn't end in flame and smoke but in an autumn chill soft and aching. They didn't fight, argue or scream. It was quiet and a mutual agreement.
Lances writer fame had taken off and they'd been begging him to move closer to their publishing office for in person meetings to help fan the flames of his growing popularity.
His bf had been growing a bit distant since then. He claims it's because he felt he was holding lance back and it was obvious the girls would go where he did.
Their breakup felt like a divorce.
The visions grow more detailed, he can actively smell them now.
The now family of three moves states and temporarily move in with an old friend, Keith Kogane.
Keith had moved out here five years ago and it just so happened to be the city his publisher wanted lance to live in.
His daughters, though still distraught, are excited to see their uncle Keith again and Keith is just as happy to see them in return.
He joyfully comments on how big they've gotten, he helps them all settle in and Keith sits with lance every night as he grieves the loss of a life he thought was forever.
Lance has a few months before a book tour starts to promote his newest series and Keith holds his little family together in his rough but gentle hands.
Those caring hands will watch his daughters while he's gone and lance couldn't be more grateful to have Keith in his life again.
Keith who never pried when lance was frozen with the horrible visions mid conversation. Keith who owned every single one of lances books and dedicated a shelf just to his Works.
This man helped keep his girls from being too hurt at the loss of another parent. This man helped get them therapist in the area and recommended lance the perfect schools for them.
Keith was actively helping his girls get through yet another thing to grieve and Lance Couldn't think of any better a situation for them to have fallen into.
He wouldn't know it just yet, and neither would Lance, just how much he was truly saving them.
~•~
When Lances nights grow too restless Keith recommends he start going for runs.
"It helped my mind alot When shiro was still MIA during his deployment. Running just....got my mind off things, helped me think."
And who is Lance to argue with reasoning like that?
His night runs become a frequent occurrence even through the biting cold of winter crawling in.
It's on his way back that he sees it in the yard of a neighbor that's no longer there: a doll.
It's pretty hair in a high ponytail reflecting the moonlight off the plastic.
Lance approaches, curious. This doll hasn't been there this entire time....has it?
He kneels down to pick it up from its resting place against the side of this old house. It reminds lance alot of vintage Barbie dolls, the kinds his sisters used to play with and never allow him to touch.
It's hands were shredded and face scratched near unrecognizable but her smile stayed intact. Perfect and glossy.
As he holds this doll in his hands the overwhelming sense of wrong evades lances senses. Something screams at him to check the rest of the yard, his gut churning as he steps further and further in.
There's another doll by the old shed. Another by the broken backdoor.
Each more disfigured than the last. Each left with the perfect, glossy smile. Each a vintage doll he used to see in his family home.
Horror and unease swallow lance whole and this time the vision takes lance violent into it's grasp.
This time everything is uncomfortably sharp. The scent of rain dampened mud, the cutting iron, the sounds of screaming.
He's in a thorn bush cutting deep into his trembling form, watching thru the gap between its branches hoping no one will hear him. He watches a man burry body after body into the large hole in the earth he always saw before.
Lance listens as the man sing songs his name saying soon it'll be his turn. Soon the tale will end.
And as the thorns shred his icy skin Lance wakes up snapped from the vision still in the old yard. He drops the doll and rushes back.
He ignores Keith's worry filled questions and hides away in the bathroom shaking from the chill left behind.
As lance strips his clothes dampened from the wet grass he looks in shock at the blood seeping through. His arms are covered in thorn cuts from a bush he was never actually in.
And lance doesn't know what to do when the next day the dolls he'd left behind are no longer there.
This is when the tale truly begins.

🔎 DEAD BOY DETECTIVES I LOVE YOU! 🔍
not sure how much i like how this turned out but I’ll definitely draw more dbd art at some point this was just something for my hands to do while i did my third rewatch aaaa!
I’ve never had a character that i’ve “kinned” but Edwin is so me 😭
I NEED A SEASON TWO SO PLEASE STREAM THE FUCK OUTA THIS (i just have it going on my tv on mute all day i won’t lie)
I think so far my favorite ship is payneland/painland i love a good slow burn! i’m not opposed to Edwin being with anyone else in between but i NEED a payneland endgame 🫶
I think it’s an unpopular opinion? but i rlly don’t like Cat King (IM SORRY) he just rubs me the wrong way thus far ✋😟 AND SOMEONE GIVE MY SON MONTY A SECOND CHANCE AT BEING HUMAN PLEASE please bring my crow son home🧎‍♀️
My biggest hope for this fandom (so long as we get green lit for season two) is that we don’t get into Voltron level ship wars bc i can’t go back and y’all can’t make me!
ty for coming to my ted talk 🫶✨
