do you have any advice/resources on how to deal with sales/income tax on digital art commissions? sorry that this is kinda out of the blue, i’ve been looking into opening comms soon and the internet has just been wholly unhelpful and confusing lmao,, figured asking someone who actually does commissions might be a little more helpful than wading through every reddit thread ever posted

The best way to get information that is legally accurate to you is to find a tax preparer, or find information about self-employment/self-reporting taxes for your specific state/country. I can't tell you any specifics because I'm not a CPA, but have consulted with some and have also filed my taxes on my own (OTL works great if you're from the US).

Some tips, however, to keep in mind is that depending on how much you make self-employed, you might not be required to report what you've earned. For example, in PA, you only report your profit once you earn more than $600 a month. Another tip is that unfortunately self-employment tax rates are kind of insane because you are basically paying the state/federal taxes of both the employer and the employee (because you're both). In order to make sure you have enough to pay your taxes, many self-employed folks pay quarterly, so they pay their taxes every few months instead of yearly (so that the payments are smaller). Another way to just make sure you have enough to pay your taxes correctly is to put 30-50% of your profit every month away into a savings account. This account is strictly for tax payments, and so you won't touch it unless its tax season. Another tip is that if you are self-employed and manage something like custom products, make sure you keep track of business related expenses. This can sometimes even mean reporting an office space in your home (check the state's legal sizing for what this constitutes as an office space), reporting the $$ you spend on products, making on supplies for in-person vending, or even transportation to get to business related events. You will want to check on these with a CPA who knows what can be reported as expenses, so always have someone you can refer to for legal advice.

As for sales income/tax, I am not sure. I charge what I charge but I don't take on many commissions right now unless it's contracted work with people's LLCs, that way they pay me through a W9 or W2 and it's far easier to report that to taxes than putting in all the numbers. But again, if you're doing commissions and not passing your state/country's legal threshold of reporting income, you dont have to report it.

W9 - Poster Activity

We had 30 minutes to design a draft A2 poster. Based off the brainstorming and ideating I did in the mid-sem break, I drafted two poster variations.

DISCLAIMER: For the sake of this exercise, I used photos of objects i inserted in my formative presentation - these are not my actual 20 elements. They are just placeholders. All text is also place-holder text.

This is just a simple inventory of all my objects, laid out in a grid. I removed the backgrounds from the objects for a more cohesive design, as I am able to control the positioning and delivery. This poster design represents the part of my creative identity that enjoys ordered collections of things.

This poster is closer to my desired outcome. It features a wooden frame, and a chained, knotted, crocheted net that is stretched to the edges of the frame (for the purpose of the activity, I got images from the internet and collaged them together, but for the real thing, I would make the frame, crochet the net, and put it together in real life). My 20 elements are being held up (either tied to the crochet or laying flat on the net) within the frame, fusing the art form and the objects. This tableaux will be photographed and then placed in ID to add text.

I printed out my poster drafts (2x A3 tiles to create an A2 poster for each) and pinned them up on the wall for the second half of the exercise: peer feedback.

My peers came up with lots of new ideas that I can start to experiment with:

making the crochet element the hero

making my poster totally 3D/physical

embroidering my name (+title if applicable) straight onto the poster paper

stitch my elements and text into the crochet net

make the whole top half of my poster with the elements a sheet of crochet, then stitch it to the bottom piece of paper with my text

embed/stitch photos of my elements into the folds/pockets of a physical crocheted net

make the whole poster an A2 piece of wood/ply

laser engrave my name/text onto the frame/wood

be more deliberate with colour - matching the vibe of my elements to the colours of yarn that I use

text as tags that attach to the net next to the objects

W9 - History of Typography

Blackletter was the first ever typeface,, roman type was created in the 15th century by Nicholas Jenson - inspired by letters found on ancient Roman buildings. Was created to be more legible than blackletter. Old style has low contrast between thick and thin strokes Transitional has greater contrast between thick and thin strokes Modern used extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes

Typography can communicate meaning - type is able to contextualise, describe settings, can tell us information about the time period. Using different typeface can establish a sense of setting. Type can be verbally expressive. Some designer sin the pas thave said that type should be purely legible - it's objective should be to communicate and not decorative while other designers use type as image, sometimes not supposed to be read but to show emotion/meaning through the symbols.

Principles

Relative Relationships Relationships between letters - could think about distance or space ideas through use of type (expanding, stretching, etc..)

Legibility and Readability Think about how you can cover and hide/reveal certain words - how I can ensure people are able to read the type.

Context and emotion Think about how different words could be placed in different locations to create meaning - motion blur brings ideas about moving fast or deliberately.

Dwell time and Duration Think about when words enter the screen and how long they stay on the screen. What directions they move in and out of the frame

Direction Might be considering what different connotations of left to right, bottom to top, top to bottom might give the viewer.

Storyborading

Sometimes called invisible art, storyboarding helps with the direction of our project and allows us to figure out how to film out of sequence. Helps us plan, direct, and estimate costs (real world examples.)
