I sense a trend will soon follow in 2020. And feel safe in stating majority of Americans are fed up with the Rhetoric of MAGA, Mr. “Not My President”. Let’s regain the Senate & the Supreme Court too! Miller defines “magic” as “the attempt to compel supernatural beings and forces to act in certain ways” (Miller, 195). She then elaborates on how even nowadays, people turn to magic in a circumstance of uncertainty, which is mostly seen in sports such as athletes or fans using charms. This specific example of magic’s place on today’s world reminded me of my brother, who is a fanatic soccer fan. For many years, whenever Galatasaray, the soccer team that our family support, has a big game, my brother have always sat on the back of the couch. He has been doing this because he believes that the team will win if he sits at that certain unusual spot. This belief came to him after one or two times the team won when he happened to be sitting there, so he started to believe that if he doesn’t sit there, they were going to lose. This is a picture of my brother, my father and his friends couple days ago watching an exciting soccer game. My brother is in his usual spot, confident on the team because he is sitting in the back of the couch. Even though, if my brother was asked whether if he believed in magic or not he would reply by saying no right away, he believes in it unconsciously. I believe that the reason why people turn into magic in uncertain situations is due to human’s desire of validation. If I were to do further anthropological research on this concept of magic, I would want to interview individuals who truly believe in magic, and would like to observe how they act when their “charms” or magic does not work.
Miller defines “religion” as beliefs and behavior related to supernatural beings and forces”. Also, there is an evolutionary model mentioned in the textbook that refers to magic preceding to religion, and religion preceding to science. The idea behind this is that all of these concepts (magic, religion and science) are a tool given to the society as an explanation of why and how existence took place; the purpose of our existence and the explanation of our existence was first explained through magic. Then religion had more solid explanations and included ethics, thus people chose to believe in religion instead. Although when science improved enough to give the most accurate explanations for existence, religion started losing its popularity to science (as it is observable in today’s society).
This picture was taken at the Space and Air Museum in Washington DC. This picture is a proof that people were shifting away from religion. This Globe’s name is Islamic Celestial Globe. This globe was made in 1630, and it stands as a symbol of the time period between religion and science. Shows that people are really interested in what science had to explain, but at the same time they wanted to stick to the religion. This picture stands as a symbol of transition from religion of being the norm to science. If I were to go further anthropological research on this subject, I would like to observe a highly religious population being informed of science’s way of explaining the existence and see if any of them would stop believing in the religion.

International Migration and Chain Migration
This photo was taken a couple weeks ago when my family threw a birthday party for my grandmother. In order from left to right is one of my aunts (middle child), my grandpa, my mother (oldest), my second aunt (youngest), and then my grandmother. This photo only captures my mother’s side of the family, and the aunt on the left is the middle child of the three sisters. She did not migrate to the United States when my mother and younger aunt did, and only recently migrated this past year. This represents chain migration which is described as population movement in which a first wave of migrants comes and then attracts relatives and friends to join them in the destination. My mother and younger aunt moved to the US first in order to further their education and hoped to be able to provide a better living situation for themselves and their future children. Soon after that, my grandparents were attracted to migrating to the US because they had two children who were prospering and could provide for them better as they grew older, as well as the health care in America was much more appealing to them than Chinese health care. In this past year, my aunt (middle child) moved to the US with her husband to bring the family together. And there are rumors circulating that my cousin, the son of the aunt who just recently moved to the US, has plans on moving the US as well. Finally, international migration, population movement across country boundaries, was perfectly described by the movement of my entire family on both my mother’s side and my father’s side of the family. As a first generation American, migration from China is at every corner, and there are plenty of stories to be told about their journeys to America.
