favourite things: 2023 edition
last year i made one of these and i thought it'd be fun to make another one. i have a notion spreadsheet with all the media i watch/read/play throughout the year (not just things that came out this year!) and i give them ratings. these are the highs (and some of the lows) of 2023 (not in order).
Games
Tunic - such a great and beautiful game that i do not want to spoil. seriously, play it. if you like zelda, exploration, solving puzzles, and cute little foxes, then it's a must
Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - what can i say, i love a zelda
Portal 2 - just an even more excellent sequel to an excellent game
TV
Alice in Borderland - i didn't know what to expect at first but it was excellent and highly addictive
Not Me - my introduction to thai BL (for better and also definitely for worse lol). anyway this show changed my brain chemistry. it has everything: gays, a twin switch situation, leftism, arson, rooftop kiss... you know
Bad Buddy - speaking of rooftop kisses...... if you know you know. anyway this is also a thai BL and it's still rotating in my brain. i rewatched it almost immediately, that's how good it was
The King's Affection - cheesy historical kdrama about a crown prince who is secretly a woman, with a swoon-worthy romance and political intrigue. this one's for the bisexuals (after all, the male love interest falls in love with the prince before he finds out it's a woman)
Vinland Saga - this anime fucking wrecked me. season 2 had me crying every single episode. thorfinn is my new child and i WILL name my future cat after him
The Devil Judge - a kdrama about a dystopian south korea with a fucked up justice system. anyway kang yohan character of all time. oh and also toxic homosexuality (affectionate)
Books
The Poppy War trilogy by R. F. Kuang - what an excellent series to get me back into fantasy series. it was not without faults, but i was hooked anyway
Babel by R. F. Kuang - i read this brick in 5 days straight. it's beautifully written and has such interesting things to say about language and colonialism. again, it has flaws but i wasn't bothered, i was obsessed with this book
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon - i didn't realise how much i missed high fantasy until i read this. it has lesbians, dragons, a bitter old homosexual, magic, and did i mention dragons and lesbians?
He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker Chan - the sequel to She Who Became the Sun, my favourite book of last year. this sequel fucking DELIVERED. i went insane about it multiple times. it's a must read
Graphic novels/manga
Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama - i started this manga 2 years ago, but since it's still ongoing and I've read new chapters this year, it counts for this year as well
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run by Hirohiko Araki - not finished with it yet but it is truly as good as everyone says it is
The Adventure Zone: The Eleventh Hour by the McElroys and Carey Pietsch - i know not everyone likes the taz comics, but i do, i think theyre great adaptations, and this one looked incredible
Movies
Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse - not as good as the first one, but still really good. beautifully animated and extremely entertaining
Bonus: the lowest of the low, titles that earned my 'sucked shit' rating
Theory of Love - amazing that out of the 3 thai BLs ive watched, 2 managed to make it on my favourites list, and one of them was some of the worst television i've ever seen
Where the Crawdads Sing - read the book for book club last year, we all hated it, and now we decided to watch the movie for a laugh. it also sucked

I haven't talked about this in forever but I feel like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is one of those shows that I'm not capable of "getting" it's primary appeal in that I can explain what I found enjoyable, even great about it, things that clearly became influential in shounen and anime in the past decade, things that are unique about it in a good way.
But none of those things are, afaict, why it's popular. much of what make it stand out to me are either skipped over or dismissed in a way that suggests others didn't notice these things? And yes I'm talking about the gayness and immense horniness in the show, like if you haven't watched it, only heard from fans, you'd probably have this idea of it being like "oho😏 these sweaty musclefreaks sure keep finding reasons to wrestle and stare in each other's eyes😏" kind of gay.
And the reality is like, Jojo would not be allowed at Pride. Off the top of my head, here are some choice moments that made me say "wow so they just let you show niche fetish porn on tv now? That's allowed? But they censor the violence?"
The boot worship/boot licking episode
The one where the guy was on a horse and looked like he was getting railed
At least 3 instances of petrification, the description of each all with the energy of someone very close. "He wished to die, but was unable to. So eventually he stopped thinking" as his hardened body floats through space... Like is this too obscure to pick up on? I didn't need to hear the "beautiful men suffering" quote to note that being TF'd into a sentient but unable to communicate rock comes up a lot
TF kink in general is a recurring theme
Polnareff's entire existence
Female stand antagonists exist only to emphasize male suffering. The old lady who s l o w l y forces polneroff to lick that dirty toilet. Mariah.
Do you remember when the preview for the Mariah episode was like, mega hyping her up? Like men were gagging in the street at how hot she was, the whole preview is just an assertion that this woman is so hot, so sexy, the ultimate femme fatale, we know this show is gay so we got something for our straight fans next ep ;) and what was that next episode? Mariah and her Forced Gay Stand. Half the shit in that preview straight up didn't happen. I was losing my mind when I watched this like not only did they intentionally mislead the audience into thinking this would be about a sexy girl doing sexy things, this episode was bar none the most blatant, the most "was the dude who normally reigns you in sick that day??" episode of the season. They said there would be hot big breasted women to trick as many ignorant views into seeing the look on Joseph's face as it's slowly dragged down Avdol's chest to his cock.
Voyeurism because Mariah enjoyed watching and making other people watch. The writers also do this to the audience.
I don't know why this sets me off every time but I have to be that guy. This show isn't fucking Top Gun. It's not homoerotic because there's sweaty muscle dudes in it. It's gay because it's m/m softcore fetish kink specifically and at times that seems to be what's driving the plot.

KFC Wants You To Be Horny For Colonel Sanders
Tumblr media
2020 has been a hell of a year for mascots.  Mr. Peanut was killed, then resurrected as a rapidly-aging child.  Toucan Sam became CalArts-ified.  Ronald McDonald and the Burger King made out.  It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the mascot world has one more punch to pull before the year is over.
In a move that I truly hope no one saw coming, KFC has partnered with Lifetime to produce A Recipe For Seduction.  Picture it: a young woman is about to be coerced into an arranged marriage when suddenly a hot new personal chef comes along to spice things up.  And by “things” I mean chicken, because it’s Harland Sanders, played by Mario Lopez.  The 15 minute long feature was released on December 13th, and can be viewed on Lifetime’s website free of charge and without having to make an account. (Could you imagine if they expected you to pay to see this thing?)  The whole thing is rife with Lifetime Original Movie tropes (mother who always knows best, gay best friend, drama involving cell phones, getting knocked out by a light hit over the head), and in its hypercondensed state becomes a parody of itself.   Which is a good thing, because again, this is the Colonel Sanders Lifetime Original Movie.  They knew what they were making and treated it as seriously as it deserved.  I don’t know if I can wholeheartedly recommend watching it, but I also can’t say I regret watching it for this article.
The most troubling thing about this is the revelation that KFC wants people to be horny for the Colonel.  And there’s a whole Kentucky Fried Chickenatic Universe of media saying so.
In 2017, the romance novella “Tender Wings of Desire” was published. The official excerpt describes the protagonist as being suddenly “swept into the arms of Harland, a handsome sailor with a mysterious past,” as she struggles to find her way in life.  It also credits Harland Sanders himself as the author, although author Catherine Kovach has since revealed herself as being the true auteur in the Q&A section of its GoodReads page.  Her replies to various people saying “Hey, what the fuck?” can best be summed up as “Yes, I wrote this.  Yes, I stand by it.  Yes, it is absolutely ridiculous and should not be taken seriously.”  Someone else in the Q&A section revealed that this was released as a Mother’s Day promotion, because… this is what mothers want?
The majority of reviews are 1 or 2-star, which at first made me think these people just didn’t “get it,” but after actually reading their critiques I saw that their problem was that the writing is apparently very bland and nowhere near as tongue-in-cheek as we were all hoping it would be.  There is at least one 4-star review that contains, “I laughed, I cried, I smiled as they set sail for their chicken empire in America,” (Apparently it’s set in Victorian England? Because that’s where all the great romance novels are set?) so at least one person enjoyed it.
Then, in 2019, they hit us again with the dating sim “I Love You, Colonel Sanders!” which despite being free on STEAM I just couldn’t bring myself to play.  But pretty much every Youtuber did a playthrough of it at the time, so I figure watching one of those is probably close enough.  You play as a student who is late to your first day of culinary school, where you meet Colonel Sanders, a robot student, an unnamed student that eats something so bad that they die and are represented by a bedsheet-ghost for the rest of the game, and a dog professor.  Just like real culinary school.  Game play includes answering questions like “what flavor dog treat does the professor want” and “if Train A leaves at 7:15 and Train B leaves at 8:47 should you wash your hands before cooking,” and the wrong answer is an immediate game over.  The art style ranges from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure to Ouran High School Host Club and every anime style in between.  While some critics panned it as being an obvious marketing stunt (like, no shit?) or even as a disservice to the dating sim genre, the STEAM reviews are “Very Positive,” so at least more people appreciated this attempt at a sexy Colonel.
But that just raises the question: Why has KFC decided this was going to be their branding?  Sure, KFC has been losing market share as Popeys and Chick-fil-A (ugh) have recently been expanding nationwide, and was all but left behind when the latter two were having their chicken sandwich war.  They had to do something to make people pay attention to them.  But was trying to get people hornt over their mascot the right way to go about it?  Are they trying to distance the Colonel’s image from the real life Harland Sanders, who was a serial womanizer and cheated on his first wife, and instead portray him in a much more “desirable” light?  Who is their target audience for this?  The romance novel and the Lifetime feature probably have a considerable amount of overlap, but the dating sim is definitely for a younger, weeb-ier demographic.  Does this have anything to do with troglodytes on 4chan and Reddit getting horny over the Wendy’s mascot? (Who is 8, you fucking creeps.)
We may never have all the answers for all of these questions.  I just hope I don’t get as burnt out on the KFCU as I did the MCU.

I'm the non anime fan anon and "you might need to rethink that relationship" 😂😂😂, well I don't know about the relationship but I definitely haven't let him pick another anime as the show were going to watch. He did explain to me why he did the Utakata arc though. I have a thing where I can't NOT finish shows when I start them, the unfinished storyline stresses me out, but Naruto is a long show and he didn't know if I'd like it or anime. So he showed me an arc that was as self contained and short as possible. Plus he thought I would like Utakata. He was right, but I don't think he was prepared for how much I love Sasuke.
Mabey it's time to start another anime though. I want to give the medium another chance because I don't think its fair to judge it off of Naruto. I trust your opinion though, do you have any recommendations?
me getting asked for recommendations knowing my favorite anime is over 1000 chapters long:
Tumblr media
Well....One Piece is objectively one of the best manga ever written, but it’s very long and I recommend strictly the manga and then parts of the anime if you like it. I understand it’s a huge time commitment though so I understand if you’re just trying out anime it is too much.
I’m actually not a big anime fan. Most of the things I like are from when I vacuumed up whatever I came across (thus the Naruto) when I was young or are older because there’s something I find charming about 80s or 90s anime but when I see anything recent I just get a feeling of annoyance. And for some of the series I do like I don’t know if I recommend for someone unfamiliar with anime like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of my faves but I wouldn’t recommend it to a non-anime fan.
My top recommendation for literally anyone, whether they like anime or not, is Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for the anime. (Do NOT watch the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime first). Literally just SO ridiculously good, tackles complex and difficult issues maturely and responsibly, is dark but still light-hearted and hopeful/positive.
One Punch Man the manga or the first season of the anime (I haven’t watched anything after that) has some problematic elements but is overall a really funny subversion of fighting anime with some amazing action.
I really like anime movies so if you want something short and haven’t seen any already considering their popularity Hayao Miyazaki’s movies (my fave is My Neighbor Totoro), or movies like Summer Wars or Akira (the Akira manga is good too)
If you think you’d like horror Junji Ito is a good manga artist to check out, the most popular horror manga author probably ever. Uzumaki is considered his magnum opus, but he also has a ton of short stories you can check out. You might have even heard of him already.
There’s some other ones I like, but there’s heavy nostalgia related to them. Sailor Moon is a fun, frivolous romp. I think the original anime had too much filler, but Sailor Moon Crystal cuts that out. Obviously I prefer the manga most, it’s written by a woman for girls so it doesn’t fall into being creepy or fanservice-y like a lot of other magical girl series and there’s a lot of gay shit in it which appeals to me.
The Digimon series is another nostalgic thing and I’m not going to pretend a newcomer would like Digimon Adventure or Adventure 02 specifically the dubs because they are objectively corny and dumb and made for kids (but I love them so much oh god). BUT Digimon Tamers is objectively amazing and way better than any kids show designed to sell toys has any right to be.
.....god I feel like I have to mention it. Now this one...this was my shit before Naruto. This was my original series when I became a weeb in 9th grade. Death Note. BUT LISTEN 1. you have to read the manga first, people will say watch the anime don’t listen to them 2. people will try to tell you it is a serious thought-provoking series. They are lying to you and themselves. Death Note is the dumbest most overdramatic shit ever. It is entertainment incarnate. I absolutely love it. If you read it don’t take it seriously just strap in and enjoy the ridiculousness.
Ouran High School Host Club: anime or manga. Just a fun inconsequential little series about a...high school host club.
I know sports anime are really popular but that’s just not my thing AT ALL so I can’t help there.
Also people will try to get you to read other long running shounen manga. Don’t listen to them. You hear about Bleach? Say no. My Hero Academia? NO. Black Clover? NO. Blue Exorcist? NO. Dr. Stone? NO. Attack on Titan? DOUBLE NO. (slightly unrelated but don’t listen to people that tell you to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion either)
Actually I heard Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter were good but I haven’t read them so I can’t say.
But realistically the only standard shounen anyone should be reading is like Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball for historical purposes and ONE PIECE.

so I've never watched jojo and i don't think i will but i def appreciate all the gay art
If you appreciate my gay art. You need to watch jojo. Actual gay couples are in the show. They might be a minor characters, but they are so precious!
Sorbet and Gelato
Tumblr media
Thank the animation studio for not being dubious about their relationship. They don't bullshit around like "oh this dudes are super close but no homo." Nah bruh, they bang, they in love, deal with it. This two couples are official gay couples
Tiziano and Squalo.
Tumblr media
We also got a man confessing to another man in his last (dying) message.
Cioccolata and Secco
Tumblr media
Jojo's bizarre adventure is main stream anime that has sexual undertone and homosexuality and I liked the fact that the creator, Hiroko Araki basically goes "man can be pretty, or kind, or gay and still can be badass and kick ass"
He caters to all of your tastes.
Do I have your attention? Then please allow me to explain you the menu.
Like Victorian time line, strange powers and vampires? But wished there was some steamy vest busting action? Here is Phantom Blood m'lady/my dear sir
Tumblr media
Or perhaps you would like crazy world adventure and Indiana Jones theme? Like bizzare stuff? It gets better, Araki has shamelessly added a American adventurer getting in too close and personal with his playboy Italian hottie. And let me add that the villians only wears leather straps and loincloth. Come and have a taste at Battle tendency my friend!
Tumblr media
Perhaps battle tendency have you hungry for more world travel. We also got supernatural battles as new accessories! Badass main character and his rag tag team goes to Egypt to fight recycled vampire who stole his ancestor's dick. That wasn't figurative, it's literal. Sounds super interesting enough? Go on an amazing journey with Stardust Crusaders!
Tumblr media
Perhaps all the world travel has had you home sick. How about settling down in nice quiet town? A slice of life style with splash of murder mystery! We got a main character who is pretty, can kick ass and unapologetic! Come home to Diamond is Unbreakable!
Tumblr media
Maybe seeing all the beef cake is making you hungry for some lean celery. What if I told you that the vampire who stole a dick had a child? That's right. We got beautiful scenery of Italy, gorgeous gay men, mafias with junky outfits and names that makes you hungry. Join the familia and be blown away by Vento Aurero (Golden Wind)
Tumblr media
Perhaps you are getting sick of all the sausage parties. Do you like strong female characters? Do you like prison breaks? And possibly sue from Disney copyright in Florida? Have you wanted a sentient talking plankton for a daughter? Experience freedom with these lesbian girlfriends in Stone Ocean!
Tumblr media
We rewind the clock! And go back to old western style. Have you wondered what would happen if Broke back mountain was a long cross country journey? Have you ever wanted to see a disabled character actually going on an adventure instead of being cast aside? Do you like songs about mozorella cheese and teddy bears? Have you dreamed about battling the president of United states? Take a wild, wild ride in Steel Ball Run!
Tumblr media
Lastly, have you wanted to go on a journey where you have no idea wtf is going on? Strange phenomenons? Do you like fruits?Family secrets? Memory loss? Search of self? Hilarious family dynamics, interesting plot and super cute, wholesome couple? (Cis couple that is not toxic or demeaning). Take a bite out of currently on going series, Jojolion! <-the main protagonist is probably the leanest, but he got a girlfriend. Which is the ironic part of it. (I can't add more pictures...weh....)
I'm sorry the answer became so long! But I make my arts because I am so inspired by the series. Idk if you ever pick it up, but there's so many different style that I just know you would like at least one of them XD

“so perry, where the fuck have you been for the past 8 months? what the fuck are you doing?”
alright so here’s the fucking deal
(tbf idk if anyone here aside from maybe 5 people at most still remembers me or cares but anyway, here you go)
school became hella busy. tbf it’s still hella busy. it’s probably a bad idea for me to be back here but I’ve been on research-related travel for the past couple of months so maybe this is just a weird homesickness thing. I get back home in a week or so but whatever. also I probably sound kinda annoyed in this post but don’t take it personally, I have just had A Week
I’m still working on my phd. it’s going very well. not gonna be specific but it’s literally on a level that if you told me several years ago that I’d be doing what I’m doing now, I would’ve flipped my shit and not believed it. I still can’t believe it tbh. still have hella impostor syndrome bc a lot of it was just me being in the right place at the right time. but anyway!
also somewhere in the middle I turned 25. my quarter-life crisis has been ongoing since then. oh, well!
Anyway so this blog will continue to be a fandom blog but probably less bnha over time since I haven’t been keeping up so much with that. here’s an incomplete list of things I’ll be reblogging. I might even try to write some fic or draw something if I ever find energy again lol
also including some of my thoughts on pairings for some of the fandoms i guess bc being a Lonely Bi, I think about pairings a lot
bnha (sorta? idk if I’m still feeling this one. naomight is still Good though)
ace attorney (this is what I started blogging about originally; a classic, I will never tire of it)
fma (brotherhood was a v good anime, still haven’t seen all of the other one)
pokemon (the video games)
pacific rim (maybe?)
maaaaaybe yoi, although I’m kinda still a bit burnt out on that fandom, welp
samurai flamenco (if I ever see posts about it, sigh; I love this show so much but I see so little of it)
mob psycho 100 (recently got into it and I really like it, also reigen and serizawa are gay for each other idgaf)
jojo’s bizarre adventure (also recently started watching this one; I’m on diamond is unbreakable rn. wish I could dress like some of these characters do every day but I can’t bc I’m A Coward lol)
tiger & bunny (this one has a similar energy to samurai flamenco somehow. also, oh no, kotetsu and barnaby are hot ghhhh)
other stuff that I’m forgetting now because I zoned out for fifteen minutes and forgot I was writing this post
as for non-fandom content:
sciencey stuff I think is cool
birds (my favourite animal)
other animals maybe
anyway I need to go back and figure out how this site works again

tagged by @pastrycreams  10 random favorite characters from 10 different fandoms in no particular order. Mostly based on design, personality, relatability, looking up to them, or that I just like them and can’t explain why.
-Goro Akechi from Persona 5: I just really love his design and aesthetic and find him to be a very interesting character to analyze
-Morag Ladair from Xenoblade Chronicles 2: She has a REALLY good design, a Scottish accent, dual whip-sword rapiers, kicks major ass, I’m pretty sure she’s gay for Brighid, what’s not to love? I just look up to her a lot in general.
-Noriaki Kakyoin from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: This is partially due to design (again), but also that I appreciate how in this over-the-top action series that his victories are brought more from his wits and knowledge rather than brute forcing his way through everything like the protagonist does for the most part (not saying I hate Jotaro, he’s fine). I also like his backstory and find him a relatable due to some circumstances in it. Such a shame he never really got to win any fights again in season 2 and even got benched for most of it.
-Henry from Fire Emblem Awakening: His always happy and pun-loving nature being played both for laughs and light horror and even tragedy to a degree is something I love. I’m aware that he’s rather altered between the original text and localization, but I always viewed him as having the quirkiness present in the localization but still having that underlying tragedy of how he became the way he is.
-Hazama/Yuki Terumi from Blazblue: I legit became a Blazblue fan because I loved Hazama’s design that much. His outfit is great and I just love green. Of course getting more in to it, I came to appreciate how much of an absolute troll he was, and his moments of breaking and actually getting angry always felt satisfying. Terumi is pretty much the manifestation of that with an equally cool design.
-AZ from Pokemon X/Y: As shaky as XY’s writing was in many ways, AZ was the best part for me. I loved his story about his Floette and building the Ukltimate Weapon and his design is pretty neat. The ending where he finally reunites with Floette was just so beautiful and brought a tear to my eye. Also, for a while when I was going through tough times I sort of identified with him a bit, because I pretty much felt like I was miserable for an eternity like he was, and skulking around like a hollow shadow of myself. I mean, it wasn’t 3000 years for me, but still.
-Count Bleck from Super Paper Mario: As far as villains go, Count Bleck was the first one that I really took note of the complex personalities and tragedy that a villain can have. Basically, for a long time I held Count Bleck as a testament to what a good and sympathetic villain could be. Also, his fancy top hat. cloak, and monocle look is very nice.
-Ira Gamagori from Kill la Kill: I was always fond of defense-based fighting styles, and Gamagori certainly provides an interesting display of just that. Of course, his character’s focus on loyalty, resolve, and honor also had me engrossed when watching him.
-Sans from Undertale: Yeah, I know, obvious pick, but I do have reasons for him being my favorite out a very good cast besides memes and his in-game comic relief. Despite being one of the least expressive, he is a character with many faces, so to speak. He seems like a smiley goofball that loves ouns for the most part, but eventually finding out more about him shows more serious, and depending on your actions, more terrifying, sides to him. His apparent meta-awareness is both funny and interesting, too. Also, hate to sound like a broken record, but his design is just nice and appealing.
-Fafnir from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The allegory for introversion being displayed by a dragon that despises humans out of mistrust towards them and a need to protect his treasure really piques my interest. His entire monologue about humans beings “hits or misses” really hit home for me.
That was fun, tagging @gay-werewolves @molybendium @cvtebot

Thoughts on the “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” English dub. Episode twenty three.
I need some Jojo to wash the taste of SW discouragement from my mouth
oh Bloody Stream I’m gonna miss you when I wrap the BT episodes up
Kars just sounds so monotone in a way that doesn’t feel intentional, he’s never been a stoic character so this just feels wrong
a razor made of wind, not to be confused with Razor Wind from Pokemon
I’m sorry but I am at the point where I just want Wamuu to die already, I wanna get things rolling
THE HEADBAND!
its...opera time I guess
“and look, you see the bandana?” pretty sure he can’t see anything Joseph
and I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm...
KABLAMMO
“you took revenge for Caesar” yeah but he was supposed to defeat you guys anyway since that’s literally our plot
just a reminder that this whole offering blood to make death easier on the enemy thing is something none of the other Jojos would do because why the fuck would they?
I get it, its showing Joseph’s compassion as Wamuu did have a measure of respect towards him and Caesar (something no other Jojo villain would do) but its still kinda weird to me
“hm hm hm. you beat me Jojo. and as a warrior it would now appear that you stand taller than I do” well you are a severed head and he’s 6′6
and now Wamuu uses himself as ammunition for a crossbow
only in Jojo
“perhaps the reason I have lived these thousands of years was so that I could meet you at the end” golly I don’t know why people think this series is gay
“Wamuu. he was too pure in his warrior philosophy. and he became weak as a result” oh you
dat haaaaaaaiiiirrr
“this world and all in it belong to me” Primadonna girl, yeah. all I ever wanted was the world.
also I am so used to the eye catchers from SDC and DIU that I half expect these to give me Stand statistics
and that picture of Kars with his tongue out sums up why I like him, he’s so flamboyant it hurts
so this one cockney vampire chronie remembered this season is in Europe, the rest however
“as you can see they are already dead” okay Kenshiro
so all the casual reminders that Lisa Lisa is a woman always felt to me like a combination of two things: the first is they are depicting 1938 and this sort of attitude was more rampant, the second is this manga its based on was written in the 80s and as Araki himself said people back then were not used to someone like Lisa Lisa so yeah
likewise its been said, and I’ll say it again, Araki wanted to go further with Lisa Lisa but was held back from doing so. some fans have said that he wanted her to defeat Kars, I haven’t personally found a source to that, but regardless we do know for a fact that he wanted to do more and was not allowed to. in a way I’m amazed at what he was able to do with her, especially when modern shonen manga still put the protagonist’s mother on the back burner or kill her for plot purposes. so that’s why I don’t get angry at him for her being put out of commission to make room for Joseph fighting Kars, I see that as something he was forced to do
“my scarf will be more than sufficient” bow down
that “huh?” Kars does when Lisa Lisa evades his sneak attack is hilarious
remember that line from the DIU manga that didn’t make it into the anime where Josuke says his grandma got hit by a car twice in the same day and was fine?
why did they cut that line?
“Jojo. think you can. beat. me???? heh. heh. mmm.” I’ll be fair, watching this clip I can tell the awkward pacing to his sentence is a mouth flap thing and Kars closes his lips after saying “think you can” but its still funny
I’ll say this about Will Barret, as Kars his voice is too monotone for my liking but those moments where the character’s personality really shines like that one laughing scene or his chuckle in the part I just referenced still come together well. he does not have the worst voice in this dub. Stroheim does.
that fake accent just sucks
oh wow German science was able to make lights really bright
this one shot of Joseph pointing at Kars looks like the knife cat meme
“Lisa Lisa is almost dead, but not completely yet” she’s only mostly dead
there’s the leg guitar thing!
its so fucking funny
“you utter bastard” I know, he thinks that’s what passes for music these days
“Jojo doesn’t know. he doesn’t know the woman he’s trying to save is his mother” aaaaand there it is!
I mean I don’t know when Araki decided to make Lisa Lisa his mother, but I’m very happy he did since as I just said even modern shonen series don’t put the mother in a position of importance unless she’s dead and that serves as some sort of motivator to the hero
but my word vomit on this topic will come a little later, just a little
tune in next time where I have a lot of feelings about this family

Renegotiating Gender Politics of Anime and the Complex Queerness of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I’m a dumb baby newcomer to anime. And I’m not gonna pretend that I have any authority at all here. I think letsplayer Arin Hanson once tweeted about “The Weeb” being like chicken pox – you’ll be okay if you get it early but if you contract it in your twenties you’re basically doomed.
When I was 13 I never let my sister off the hook for being into Inuyasha. One day, I walked into the anime club at my highschool and just belly laughed at the dorks who dared to enjoy things. I’m a recovering fuckhead, and boy do I feel bad about the assholey things I thought and said.
The sneerishness stemmed from this idea that ALL anime was sexist, racist, and sexually obsessed with underage girls. To me, the entire country of Japan was ideologically written off as an ethical dystopia. That was when I still thought of myself as a real hard manly masculine boy, with long hair and motorhead on loop loud enough to drown out any opinions but Lemmy’s. I had things to prove! Boycott Japan! I’m very insecure!
Of course, things have changed (I hope). It took me many years of hurting and deriding really wonderful people to come to terms with how fucked up my thinking was. Studio Ghibli flicks became something to share with my partner, and then I happened to sit in on a pal watching subbed Attack on Titan. I had realized how much incredible stuff, how many fantastic worlds I was missing out on. How I didn’t need to worry about authentically being my true analog self if I was just fucking enjoying something.
***
When I first heard of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, it was through the tweets and tumblr posts of femmes and queer folk. That should have been a tell…
I had previously looked into the entirety of the Fatal Fury anime films because of cartoonist/roadwarrior/bisontaur Coelasquid waxed on about the pretty bara boys. That was kinda my first introduction to enjoyably dumb thousand-punch-a-second anime, but I was more interested by the way in which Coelasquid read into the schlock, seeing more complex narratives and richer characters than at face value. I began to see this blatantly masculine-centric misogynist text as more complex than what was intended.
Fragile and Close to the Edge were cornerstones in my musical childhood, so the roundabout meme (playing on the first couple series’ “to be continued” sepia freeze frame) was enough to get me interested. Also, I had just finished One Punch Man, and that left a big ol’ fist-shaped hole in my heart, so I was down for some new hyper weeb fighty fights.
Eventually I took it upon myself to find some Jojo episodes, starting S1E1. I got about six episodes in, and kinda lost interest. I think I got to about the episodes that involved the warriors devout to Mary queen of Scots. I can’t remember exactly why I fell off the wagon (anime Queen Mary really spoke to me). I probably had shit to do, and life gets in the way. Excuses excuses.
It was around this time that Lego Bionicle had received its half-hearted and ultimately futile reboot. By way of a 4chan /toy/ thread I came across the tumblr bionicle fandom, and then was redirected to someone’s twitter which had some fireemoji 100emoji fireemoji shitposts. She also posted jojo stuff non-stop. Which was cool. I didn’t mind not “getting it”; it was all so absurd that it was kinda just a joy to have on the feed.
It also piqued my interest as to why someone so into a weird niche robo-tiki fandom would be into this big boy barafest. In Bionicle, there were very few female characters. The extant few were actually pretty well written, but this left a big population of masculine heroes with a fandom hungry to ship romance into. I remember one person posting “If they didn’t want bionicle to be so gay, then why did they write men almost exclusively?”
“Alright”, I thought. “If they’re on the same wavelength regarding avatar-but-robots, Jojo might be cool.”
So I picked up where I left off, and was hopelessly hooked. I finished part 1, was admittedly chuffed by some pretty fun plot twists, and I absolutely got into Joseph Joestar in the part 2. The outfits, posing, and artistic obsession with lips, hips, and eyes were all so decadent, and the absolute disregard for toning it down really got me into the series.
Simultaneously, I was watching Steven Universe and absolutely adoring the story for its inclusive, positive social activist platform and it’s kindness. Each episode basically became my time for cry. I was also finishing up a cultural anthropology degree that would sustain that allowed me to unpack all the self-loathing I had as a teenager. I came out of that degree a kinder, more open minded person.
I was in a mire of anti-bigotted pink futurism. So why the fuck was I so into this show about big muscular boys punching big muscular boys? Well for one I started realizing things about myself but ALSO:
In some sense, the absence of women as plot characters had left the shipping possibilities open. As previously mentioned: all men, all gay. I noticed hard aesthetic resemblance to hyperbutch homo-ero british and American schlock portraits of the 60’s and 70’s. In many ways, yes, it is a male power fantasy. But in other ways it is absolutely a bergerian spectacle of pecks and soft lips and sad eyes and thighs and midriff and chiseled V. It’s an animated pinup mag.
I saw more porn of the characters than battle portraits. The fanart knew what was up. The fanfiction was dripping. Jojo is so sexually charged, and more importantly, sexually charged for a specific audience.
Now you could probably write a paper drawing a lineage from Charles Atlas through the dark ages of comics and into jojo, but I feel that’s more of an artist-centric industry perspective. The fact that Jojo sits comfortably in Shonen Jump, with a reader base insistently for boys, raises some exciting questions. I mean, it’s definitely not classically bishounen - there’s no accessible femme softness playing into romantic hetero dating scenario.
I think what, in the very least, feels revolutionary about Jojo is its unapologetic, unspoken, and hard sexualization of male forms. There’s really not a lot of actual fighting going on - so much frame time is spent ogling these tight bodies. You know this sexuality is for someone, and that someone is heckin’ queer and/or heckin’ female.
Furthermore, this powerful sexual decadence is fairly uncommon for non-hetero male eyes. It’s cruder and far more raw than your average bit of media meant to titillate boy-lovers. I can really only think of Magic Mike XXL as an equivalent.
This isn’t what your average dudebro wants to be. There are examples of male power fantasy you could point to, but deep down you know: jojo is for the loins of the spectator. There’s something incredibly subversive about putting the power of sexual spectatorship in the hands of women and queer folk. Tailoring to that spectatorship.
Yeah okay. That could just build off of the cliché of the big beefy hunks that naughty suburban blondes get flustered over after their 4th glass of white wine. But hear me out: Jojo’s not at all getting his beautiful body out of this queer reading.
For example: there’s a theme of piercing in Jojo. Bits of wood and shrapnel in bodies, the Pillar Men’s betrothals to Joseph (which y’know, gg ez), Dio’s obsession with fingering people’s necks… etc. Unlike the invincible bulletproof armour-bodies of Superman, Goku, etc etc, these bodies are fleshy and soft. They are vulnerable, even if the character himself is stoic enough to tough it out.
Men’s bodies, in the patriarchal scheme of things, are not supposed to do that. They should be hard, to pierce the bodies of the subjugated (read emasculated/females) that defy them. But here we are, Araki, with the men who can be penetrated, curiously burning gender roles and expectations with violence in a very violent narrative. Far from subtle, sure, but it’s nothing to ignore.
If the Jojoboys were really just a heteronormative eye candy for thirsty women, I don’t feel like male penetration would have been as pervasive. The male would be doing the penetrating, but no real males would be penetrated, especially not the protagonists.
To build on that, the garish, revealing fashion doesn’t point to male power. There are no massive pauldrons or chestplates, everything is laid bare, sensuous and exposed. These adjectives tend not to be associated with hegemonic masculinities. Nor is the world of textiles and high fashion seen as a socially acceptable male venture, as much as a trivially feminine pastime. There is genderfuckage abound in this hard boy cartoon.
***
I overheard someone talking about how they tried watching Jojo and they couldn’t understand for the life of them why any self-respecting femιnist would be into this mess of tropes. I’m not gonna argue against that. The whole argument for Jojo as a progressive show sounds like someone covering their ideological ass. I’m in no way suggesting that Jojo does the same work for femιnism that shows like Steven Universe and Avatar/Korra might be doing.
The point I’m trying to bring home is that I came of age thinking that anime was inherently sexist. That idea came from a whole lot of not listening to the people who were actually experiencing real sexism. Especially in those incredible cultural circumstances where the distinctions between content creator and content interpreter become blurred, it’s always worth it to investigate what identities, intentions, and libidos are involved. Something that seems like run-of-the-mill propaganda might actually be backfiring in a more progressive direction than media with actual progressive intentions.

Anime Roundup Pt.2 - Fall 2016 [Spoilers]
More rambling~
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable [8/10]
Another season of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure has come and gone, and it’s been quite a wild ride. Personally, I think it was about on par with the first season of JJBA. I liked it better than Stardust Crusaders because I liked the main characters better and the plot was not as much of a repetitive “monster of the week” affair, but unfortunately, it seems like they didn’t put as much effort into the animation and production values. This 39 episode season was also a full 11 episodes shorter than the two 25 episode seasons of SDC, despite the manga being slightly longer. It definitely felt a little rushed, and I’ve had my manga reader friends inform me that some of their favorite parts were cut out.
But there were a lot of things I really loved about DiU as well. Josuke quickly became my favorite Jojo after Joseph, and I like Jotaro more in this part than I ever did in SDC. The villain, Kira, is also one of my favorite characters period and so is Rohan Kishibe, played brilliantly by Takahiro Sakurai as usual. Many of the stands are hilarious and creative in this part too. I also loved the whole Scooby Doo-esque mystery of a serial killer in the town and the slice of life elements. The scale was brought down from “evil villains try to take over the world” to one serial killer who “just wants to live a normal life”... and kill women and take their hands to satisfy his compulsions, of course. It was a really refreshing change from the typical formula.
The only thing or character that I didn’t like is Koichi - partially because he gets more attention than Josuke, kind of like Polnareff in SDC (except much less likable) and partially because his voice actor, Yuki Kaji, is fucking annoying as him. Unfortunately, on top of that, he’s the character who spends most of his screen time yelling exactly what’s happening, like Polnareff and Speedwagon before him, except his voice is literally ear-splittingly irritating.
I sincerely hope that in the next part, they don’t take shortcuts like they did with this part. JJBA is one of my favorites, so I will still be waiting for it eagerly.
Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru [5/10]
I wasn’t expecting much from this anime and it still disappointed me lol. Touken Ranbu is basically a moe anime (but with a diversity in character designs that moeblobs wish they had), except the characters are male. Some of it was sort of mildly entertaining and cute, but for the most part, it was pretty boring.
... Maybe I’m just peeved because they didn’t focus that much on characters I personally find attractive, like Kogitsunemaru. You know the only reason I watched this show in the first place was because I’ve seen a ridiculous amount of yaoi for it on pixiv? The porn was nice, but I would never play the game itself, so I figured the anime would give me a little more insight into the characters and their relationships. The anime did, but it still failed at entertaining me.
So, yeah, this anime perfectly average and forgettable. Only watch if you’re super dedicated to the game.
Poco’s Udon World [9/10]
The biggest surprise of this season for me was this show. Yes, this show is my AotS (by about .2 points) over that other anime which got super popular and had a ton of praise. Well, we all go against the grain sometimes and this is my turn. Poco’s Udon World is an underrated masterpiece in my opinion. This show came off the heels of the much more popular Sweetness and Lightning, which came out the previous season. Both shows have a similar premise - a young man in his early 30s with black haired (voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura) becomes a single father due to sudden circumstances and has to take care of an adorable toddler-aged child. There are some key differences, of course, but they are still similar enough to be comparable.
Personally I think Poco’s Udon World is far superior (for reasons I will discuss), and it saddens me that it hasn’t got half the popularity of S&L. (Probably because there isn’t a cute waifu character as one of the mains, heh.) So what makes PUW so good to me? Well, besides all the cute and the incredibly heartwarming/touching nature of the show, it’s also just very well-written. The characters and their development, as well as a plethora of themes I don’t see being portrayed very often in anime or when they are brought up, are handled in ways that make me uncomfortable.
Here is just a short list of themes PUW manages to masterfully cover in a 12-episode, single cour season:
career vs family
career and family separately
fatherhood
grief and nostalgia
growing up
love
And those are just the main themes? There are other things that are covered on a more subtle level. See, I explained in my review of S&L that it was lacking an exploration of its themes and was constrained by its repetitive slice of life format. Most of the supporting characters were not very fleshed out either. PUW fixes all or most of these problems.
Every episode brings something new to the table and there is no set episode format. I also absolutely love that every character outside of Poco and Souta feels like they could be a real person, instead of being a plot device or 2-dimensional character. They all have lives outside of their interactions with the main characters, so that even when they don't get much screen time, they feel fleshed out. All of them represent a different sort of family or different sort of lifestyle or different sort of mindset, which you can easily compare to Souta's situation because they all serve as foils to him. A lot of supporting characters even get their own character development like Nakaji and Rin (Souta' sister).
And... okay, I want to analyze this show in-depth one day, but I need to rewatch it (maybe several times) before I do. Trust me, it’s cute and all, but it’s much more than that too. You might be surprised at how high it is on my Top 10 Anime of 2016 list.
Kiss Him, Not Me [7/10]
After watching two absolutely terrible otome/harem anime that really pissed me off (Uta no Prince Sama and Kamigami no Asobi), I went back on my decision to never watch an otome because this one was about a fujoshi and written by a yaoi mangaka. Somehow... it paid off. I came out of this pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this show.
Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty that annoyed me (the fatshaming, how Serinuma’s voice changes, the shoujo cliches, etc), but overall I enjoyed it more than I disliked it. Although I was only rooting for two of the love interests, Mutsumi-senpai (who is mild mannered, friendly, genuine, liked her when she was fat) and Nishina (the gay option™, also a fujoshi and otaku who has a lot in common with Serinuma, also liked her even when she was fat), I didn’t really mind or hate the others either. All of them still treated her more respectfully than LIs in the other otome I watched.
The ending was brilliant too, and if they make a second season, I would still watch it for the characters and humor.
Yuri!!! on Ice [9/10]
How do I even begin to tackle Yuri!!! on Ice? This is the AoTS for sure (in general, not to me personally) and is by far the runaway smash hit in terms of both popularity and ratings. This anime is a game changer, to put it lightly. It did something no other popular anime has done before, and the praise is honestly well deserved. But, hey, remember that it’s still not perfect. In fact, up until the very last episode, I was debating on whether it deserved an 8 or a 9 on MAL. I settled on a 9 (a low nine by my standards) only because I cried a whole lot the last episode and realized that the overall impact of the show is bigger than my minor gripes. What are those minor gripes?
#1) Off-model/inconsistent animation. I will give a slight break to the animators because I know that animating ice skating is very complex and intricate, especially if you consider just how much ice skating there is in almost every episode. There are about a dozen ice skaters, each with two different 2-minute routines. Yes, many of them are reused multiple times, but regardless it’s still a lot of work. Unfortunately, YoI missed the chance to be stunning all the way through and join the other always-praised animation greats like Cowboy Bebop and much more recently, Mob Psycho 100. Only the first episode truly impressed me with how perfect and fluid the animation was, and I was dearly hoping that they would keep up that level of quality all the way through. Sadly they don’t, but we should all thank the writing of this show for being so damn good and making up for it. Besides, aside from a few, rather obvious off-model shots, it didn’t ever get too bad, not like Cheer Danshi!! from the Summer season.
#2) Slightly rushed pacing. Yeah, some of the events of this anime just go by too fast, especially the beginning few episodes where months pass between Victor arriving in Japan and Yuuri beginning his journey to the Grand Prix Final. It’s not really made clear to the viewers how much time has passed, and even I didn’t realize until I read a tumblr post on it. Originally, I wanted a whole other cour so that I could see the ice skaters interact more outside of work, but I think that would be too much as well. One more episode (a full 13 episode cour) would’ve been perfect, imo. Thankfully, we are getting another season, so there will definitely be more time to develop the other side characters and resolve some of the remaining threads! But seriously, I hope they do slow down a little bit in season 2.
Other than that...? Gripes so minor that they’re not even worth mentioning. The amount of good that YoI has done is overwhelming my comparison. I’ll just go through them like a list again because why not?
#1) Viktor and Yuuri’s relationship. A healthy canon gay interracial relationship in a non-yaoi anime. That is just shy of revolutionary in terms of LGBT representation in an anime. “We are born to make history”, indeed. Yes, some other anime have done it too like No.6 and Revolutionary Girl Utena. But was No.6, the other one where the main couple is M/M, popular like YoI is? Not particularly. Most of the viewership comes from yaoi fangirls or LGBT anime fans seeking an anime with a canon gay ship in it. What about Utena? Well, Utena didn’t have a happy ending, not for the canon lesbian character and not for the main F/F relationship of the show. Nothing is also explicitly stated like it is in YoI. Ofc, Utena by the very nature of the show, explicitly states very little but still. There’s also a goddamn kiss!
The best part of this is that Viktor and Yuuri is that, despite their happy ending, they don’t sacrifice depth or conflict between them and the drama doesn’t feel forced either. That balance is hard to achieve and it takes writing talent to pull it off. Every action and reaction feels natural and in-character. The writing featuring them is as good as any well-written romantic drama with a hetero couple! The other great thing is that even though Viktor and Yuuri’s relationship is incredibly important to the narrative and is the main relationship overall, romance is still not the primary genre. It equally shares genres with sports, comedy, and drama.
TL:DR; Their relationship is important. It sets a precedent that a gay couple can be the main couple of an anime and still be wildly successful. Now future manga and anime writers can take risks knowing that they won’t end up being financially compromised due the lgbtphobic culture of Japan.
2) Yuri on Ice perfectly balances its genres. This may not seem that important, but it kind of is and ties into the last point about how romance is not the main genre. If romance were the main genre, then this would be a yaoi/shounen-ai anime and it wouldn’t have gotten nearly as popular as it did. Yuuri’s evolution as an athlete and his desire to win the gold for the first time is just as important as his relationship with Viktor. Yurio, Viktor, and the other skaters’ relationships with each other and ice skating is also given a lot of attention. The love and dedication to ice skating in general is prominent and that passion has attracted the attention of countless professional ice skaters. (In fact, It’s like the anime singlehandedly brought attention to a niche sport that doesn’t get a whole lot of industry unlike American football and soccer/European football.)
There’s also a lot of comedy, which may be hit and miss for some people, but I found it pretty damn hilarious when it happens. Of all the sports anime I’ve seen, only a few others try others bringing in other genres. Most are pure sports because pure sports are usually the most successful (Haikyuu!! and Kuroko no Basket). So far for me, only YoI has successfully melded together all the genres it attempts.
3) Characters. It is said that sports anime highly depends on its characters to be good and set itself apart from other sports anime... and that’s pretty true. Most sports anime follow a rigid, predictable plot structure that doesn’t allow for much creativity on that front, so aside from technical aspects like the production values, the characters’ likability are the only things that it can rely on for originality. Of course, as I’ve already discussed, YoI blends genres and isn’t just pure sports so it has more freedom, but even it follows the same basic plot structure: main character is an underdog (they’re usually underdogs) who wants to win the finals.
So, what about the characters? Honestly, they’re fucking great. The problem with sports anime characters in most cases is that authors will fall back on tired stereotypes. Even the best of sports anime tends to have really obvious archetype characters you can recognize instantly. YoI doesn’t really have that. Yes, some of the characters do follow archetypes a litte, but even in the short amount of time they are given, they end up having miles more depth than the average sports anime character. It helps that we get to see them interacting with each other off the ice too. YoI is a character driven show much more than it is a plot-driven one. The plot is fairly simple, but the characters and their development are the most important part, particularly the main character, Yuuri Katsuki. He is relatable but also very believably talented and multifaceted. Viktor comes off as kind of a passive aggressive jerk at first, but he is one of the kindest and most caring characters in the show. Yurio comes off like an aggressive little brat (and he is still a little shit, I hope he gets more development in s2), but he’s genuinely a prodigy and he cares about Yuuri’s career. Listen, I could keep going and list another 5 characters that I like, but that’s not the point of this review.
That about covers the major things... I could go on, but then I might never shut up. To summarize, YoI is not perfect, but it is still so important for the gains in made for gay representation and besides that, it’s a rich, funny, heartwarming, and interesting portrayal of figure skating. I am sincerely looking forward to season 2 and hope that it’s just as good or even better than season 1.
