I understand why some people want to view Watson as Neurodivergent alongside Holmes, and honestly good for them. It's a sucky sucky world out there, go project to your hearts content. But for me personally, I have to see Watson as neurotypical.

My little neurodivergent ass saw Holmes and imprinted on him like a little lost duckling. And then there's Watson, who sees Holmes and his Behaviours™️ as something wholly out of the norm but absolutely adores him anyway, quirks and all. It's so refreshing to have a implied-neurotypical character who comes across neurodivergent behaviour and is just like. 'oh! that's new. ok then, on we go.' he doesn't try to change Holmes, only tries to help him away from destructive behaviour , like weaning him off cocaine.

Doctor John Judgey Watson saw Sherlock Holmes and did not judge him. instead he was just facinated by him. adored him. acepted him.

that being said, Watson is Fucked Up. that man is not 'normal', but I do think he is neurotypical.

Portrait study from the Solitary Cyclist.

I started this in July with the intention of finishing it before the Letters from Watson substack finished SOLI and that did Not happen.

I’ve been gradually chipping away at it ever since with it being about 20hrs just for the digital rendering. And it only took that long because I had to keep scrapping and restarting Holmes’ face and hand. All my love for Jeremy Brett, but his face is so specific that it was the greatest struggle to get his likeness any decent. And I still find it lacking. But what can you do.

I appreciate the learning experience this gave and it’s made me increase my efforts in digital painting in the weeks since I started it. And my complaints aside, I really did enjoy the process. Frustrating at times, but very rewarding. And I’m quite proud to have finished it instead of leaving it in my wips folder for eternity.

Anyways, bonus traditional sketch with too big Holmes Head and too small Watson Head and initial color comp.

I know in canon holmes is just "okay" at botany and he only cares enough to learn about poisonous plants, but I've been cursed with a vision of 221b covered in plants bc holmes has like a month or two where he becomes obsessed w keeping and studying normal houseplants for a change. pots on the windowsills, flowers in the sinks, vines crawling up the walls, probably the bathtub has become useless bc that's where holmes is keeping the cuttings, it's just green and leafy everywhere except Watson's room, because he'd throw a fit otherwise. And watson grumbles about it of course, bc it's messy and there is nowhere to sit where hanging leaves don't tickle your nose, but holmes really is having the time of his life looking at leaf cuttings under a microscope and nothing is exploding or stinking up the apartment, so watson thinks well, there are unhealthier habits, and he lets it be. it's a novelty, having their own little greenhouse in the middle of a grey city, with the smell of fresh earth and life all around them. holmes keeps giving watson bunches of flowers--mostly varieties of roses--when he's done studying them, and eventually they run out of vases, so watson brings the pots up to his room and keeps them watered himself. he never signed up to be a gardener but he doesn't grumble about the roses at all.

It is one, or none

There is the dynamic in which Holmes and Watson have clear communication, Victorian husbands through and through. There are symbols of commitment to one another, Holmes with a signet ring; Watson with his wedding ring to a wife that may or may not exist with this dynamic- whether she is real, a beard for his relationship with Holmes, or a plot device, all involved parties have a consensual and warm understanding of one another. They could be queerplatonic partners, they could fuck nasty, they could be the most saccharine romantic pair to have existed, but all is well and feelings are spoken and hearts are full.

Then there is the dynamic in which nothing is ever spoken. Not out loud, at any rate. There is separation, there is miscommunication, there is frustration at having such intense feelings tangled up with someone incapable of returning or acknowledging them. These feelings may be one-sided, they may be mutual, but they are kept closely guarded. It may not be withheld for any malicious reason; it might simply be a matter of not understanding or the ability to articulate them in a way the other person will understand or believe to convey the true meaning of the words.
