started watching A Murder At The End of the World and i'm only like 4 minutes in rn but oh my fucking god, they already did the impossible, they made synthesizing a literal audience not only not annoying but actually intriguing and effective. holy shit.

#james talks #james watches stuff #a murder at the end of the world #if you're new here or have never consumed any media: synthesizing a literal audience is one of the most annoying things anything can do #it is at best distracting and at worst condescending and grating bc it assumes and assigns audience reactions and interpretations #and it also REEKS of a lack of faith in the material itself to be able to speak for itself #most of the time it's done for no real purpose and the few times it has a narrative purpose it's done awfully #even a movie i ADORE like SCREAM (1996) was not immune to this. #the one single flaw in that movie to me is Kenny repeating the 'behind you' joke. not only is it not funny the second time but it's— #synthesizing the audience by making the characters an audience to the same movie as us and telling us how we should be reacting. #another movie that tries to do this and fails miserably is like Halloween: Resurrection which tries to make some commentary— #on media as exploitative entertainment and the audience as willing participants and equally culpable in the continuation of trauma but the— #execution of it is absolutely horrible and that's even beyond how bad the rest of the movie is. #every time the characters are watching the same media or there's an actual audience in the media it's literally never gone well— #at least as far as i have experienced. but this is the first time a literal audience in anything has actually worked bc it's like— #right in the opening and it's the audience actually getting invested in the story so THAT audience responding the same way actually WORKS #actually borderline genius tbh

thinking about how when Jeremy was being a little shit, Corey sat there, processing and deciding on how to respond appropriately, before eventually settling on the stern, "Okay, five minutes, and then you're going to bed", which is most definitely word for word what his mother has been telling him since childhood whenever he was 'acting up'.

and thinking about how he probably always hoped to never be like his mother, and how he was thinking about another way to discipline Jeremy and have some authority over him without being like her, only to end up doing what he's known to be on the receiving end of so intimately his entire life.

haunted mansion 2023 is such a moviegoing experience. you walk into this halloween movie in early august and don't expect much except that it will maybe be funny (expecting same kind of situation as haunted mansion 2003) and instead you immediately are confronted with a movie that is at its core about grief and learning how to live with and lean on others while dealing with that grief, a genuinely touching example of found family, danny devito, and a few really good moments of real honest suspense with scares that make you jump. AND it's actually funny

#also the protagonist is a gorgeous thirty-something widower. that's beside the point though #i think we should have more movies featuring hot widowers who aren't in their twenties i think it'll help nature heal #ALSO that the main 'romantic' couple didn't actually get together in the end? left open-ended? #the kid got a father figure but ben and his mom did NOT need to kiss in the end to show affection and that they genuinely care ab each othe #beautiful. moving. genuinely beloved #anyway this movie was really fucking good i can't wait to watch it again at halloween time for real haha #valentine notes #haunted mansion 2023

Increasingly annoyed by people who act as tho a film they don't like has no themes or coherent ideas just because they don't like it. Specifically talking about people who will rant and rail against a movie, especially for being dumb or confusing or out of character or a similar critique, but then actively demonstrate that they did in fact understand and pick up on the themes and ideas of the movie, but they hand wave it away with a "but that's dumb" or a "what were they were even going for?" It's intellectually lazy, and it's dishonest.

If you genuinely didn't understand a film, that's fine. If you're so disinterested in or disappointed by a movie that you don't care to examine it more deeply, that's fine. If it's hard to articulate exactly what the problems you have with the work are, that's fine.

But when people behave as tho they didn't understand it or they don't care enough to analyze it, when clearly they did understand it and just didn't like it, it's like why do you think whether a movie sets up and then delivers on a concept or idea hinges on whether you enjoyed it or not? Why should I take your criticism seriously if you won't do the movie the same favor?

I see people say things like "I guess they were going for (insert theme here) but that's stupid." What from the text of the film makes you think that's what they were going for? What do you mean by "that's stupid"? Is it poorly executed? Is it antithetical to another theme in the work? Is it silly or tonally dissonant? Or did you just dislike it too much to analyze it further? Did it just disappoint you or rub you the wrong way?

Like I just wish people would either go there and actually do the work of saying "here's what I think they were going for, here's where they were successful and here's where they failed" or be honest and say "I picked up on some things, but I'm not interested in exploring the themes because it disappointed me so much."

its really nice being a horror fan tbh if only because most of the complaints i see online about Movies These Days just don't really apply to the movies i watch at all

#like oh you're sick of things being edgeless and watered down and family friendly for maximum appeal? #i won't pretend that's not an issue in the rest of the industry but. yeah almost nothing i watch is like that #even teen horror still tries to keep its edge and have some kind of commentary #we also have way more midbudget and lower budget movies like sure there are some tentpoles but its way less common #two of the most anticipated horrors from 2023 so far were indie projects. one was so low budget that it was just pictures of walls. #and our tentpoles are kind of predicated on going bigger and more insane. not toning it down #theyre still usually pretty bad though lol eye contact with halloween ends and scrim 6 #but one thing you can't say about them is that they were boring and pandering to fan service #idk its nice enjoying the one genre that the walt disney company wouldnt touch with a 100 ft pole #avpost #now. we do have the problem with cgi taking over but it is to a lesser extent bc most horror directors love practical effects #and we do also have the remake problem. but that goes back to like literally the 1800s #the second horror movie ever made was a remake of the first horror movie ever made and that set the stage for the rest of the genre

love to say i’m a fan of horror films even though i end up disliking a lot of them

#they're at least more enjoyable when you're with people where you can make jokes #bc if i'm by myself watching it and i don't like it then i'm just like this is boring #but the big classic franchises - friday the 13th / halloween / nightmare on elm street #like all fine at first but watching ALL of them was just like 'why am i not getting this why are these considered classics' #i think i am just a little picky like with slashers where there's no motive i'm like what's the point that's why i like scream so much #even if some killers have flimsy motives at least there's a REASON it's more interesting to me that way #and then on the other hand some of the more contemporary stuff like did i enjoy myself watching hereditary and midsommar and whatnot #sure but do i have much interest in rewatching them? like not really #most recently i loved ready or not and halloween 2018 but i still haven't watched the two sequels i gotta get on that #honestly think i enjoyed that a little more than the old ones #though i still think being like 'and none of those sequels happened' was A Choice #though fine with me bc as i said i watched all those franchises and i was just like okay and? #oh and scream 5 i did like that well enough #honestly haven't watched a LOT of the recent ones though there have been ones i wanted to see #still need to see that new saw though again i just like. didn't care for them doing anything after saw 7 bc it ended so perfectly #never forget me and nancy getting that on dvd (maybe even rented it? we would've still done that back then i think) #and when we got to the dr gordon reveal we jumped up and high fived and it was the BEST
