why are you defending cyberpunk so much? its a really buggy mess, it barely works on even some of the best pcs, they lied when they advertised it working on the ps5 but not ps4, and there were a ton of issues even before release happening with their social media team

my point is that people pick and choose when they wanna throw their arms up over the standard that is AAA gaming releases, and has been since prooooobably da2′s release (14 months to produce and release a game). maybe even earlier if you consider kotor2′s release (aka, given 11 months to make a game).

my point is that fallout 76 was an unplayable, game breaking, exploitative game riddled with many of the same issues. and i dont know anyone who continues to play it to this day but i know faaaaaar more people who refunded it or cancelled their orders just prior to launch because they didn’t want to brick their consoles.

my point is that one of the biggest blowbacks towards crunch was in regards to rockstar and red dead redemption 2′s release, a game which is now heralded as one of the best of all time, despite the way it treated everyone who worked on it. the moment it fixed everything, people forgot about just how hurt people working on that game were

my point is that skyrim is treated with this gentleness and fondness for dragons flying backwards and giants leaping into the sky and glitched quests (and how trophies, still to this day, sometimes will never work so you will have to put in another 100+ hour playthrough to be able to MAYBE get something). the irony in sony going after cp77 but STILL not forcing companies to fix broken quest lines

remember daa, with the silver mines? how if you happen to get that bug, that’s it. you basically have to restart. all ur items are gone, you can’t proceed. boom. bioware has never made an effort to fix it. they just released awakening as is, and proceeded onto their next project.

you also have to take into account that, okay sometimes they can’t pick up on all the glitches prior to testing like one or two are gonna slip through! but there’s a difference between that and a glitched out unplayable mess. cp77 honestly isnt unplayable, in fact it is one of the better games ive played at launch in a long time. do you know what gets these ppl notes and likes on the internet? blowing this shit out of proportion. in my 30+hrs of playing already, where im still just wandering around and picking up side missions and checking out clothes and whatever, sincerely have not seen half the shit ppl have said. not that it isnt true! the screenshots and vids are there! but people are piling it on, completely and totally, just for the sake of interest.

remember when mass effect andromeda dropped, and they had that beta test version that like journalists got to play, and how the models for cora and ryder had weird kind of motions and how sara ryder’s facial expressions are still a meme to this day? and how it kept getting piled on sooooooo much when it was like... not actually like that gameplay wise, and the story was quite nice, but who actually talks about that when you can talk about how bad the game looks ugh loading sequences ugh 360 head spins. fallout 4 had those weird smiles coming from npcs that are quite haunting, weren’t fixed.

you can actually tell that cdpr paid attention to writing a story that works, the endings are cathartic and not 2edgy2bedifferent like me3′s fucking starchild bullshit. also speaking of games who spent so long in production their story fucked up: persona 5 and final fantasy 15 are examples of spending too long being worked on with the story that despite how good it looks, it is a vapid excuse of a game that you HAVE to play either sequels or the dlc to get the full brunt of it. remember persona 5′s advertising? COMING SUMMER 2013. final fantasy 15 was ff versus for the lonnnngggeeesssstttt time too before square enix took it upon themselves to fuck it up and then GET MAD when ppl pointed out the story was kind of shallow (and also “why arent you releasing ff7r already”)

oh and then we also have things like kingdom hearts 3, which was quite frankly? awful and was FULL of corporations just getting their hands on it and doing whatever with it story wise (disney wanted frozen to feature so bad they intervened completely). borderlands 3 which keeps messing with the dlc and im amazed they even keep trying. bl3 was the sequel no one asked for, because it had no idea what it was doing. it was setting up to a story that i think very few ppl are now interested in.

yes cdpr lied. yes there are issues with their social media team. who do you actually blame though? the investors? corporations like sony and microsoft who no doubt wanted the game released as well? project managers, their bosses, the CEO? shareholders? fans who wanted the game now instead of putting up with another delay because lets be real: if a company needs to delay the game, they need to delay the game. its a demand and supply thing going on and the ppl who sit behind desks just see numbers they dont give a fuck about the people and we all know this. it fucking sucks.

this is not the first company, this is just the most public blowup because this game was teased in 2012 and people have held out for years and i get it! i do! ive been waiting for this game for years as well. and we can argue about how you shouldnt preorder games or not play stuff at launch or like how you should already have the latest console that has been sold out since it was announced and wont arrive in your country until march ! this can go back and forth and we can talk circles around cdpr but the point is: this isnt the first instance of it. it wont be the last.

if sony actually gave a fuck, they would review every single goddamn game that has been released to this day and has had bug reports. they dont. this is to clear up their public image. these companies truly dont give a fuck. bethesda admits to relying on fans to make their games playable with modding and to ALSO keep track of their story because it doesnt matter to them.

“There’s historical precedent for a lot of fucked up shit, Shaw. That doesn’t make it okay!” Pyro stared, aghast, at the website. “Does the Council know you’re doing this? They can’t possibly approve!”

“Are you going to run and tattle on me?” Sebastian sneered. “That doesn’t seem like you, Allerdyce, but you have become more of a conformist rule-follower in Krakoa, it seems. At any rate, some of the Council are aware of my side business. They have elected not to bring it to a vote in meetings, so presumably I am breaking no law of the island.”

“But….it’s wrong. It’s bloody grotesque is what it is!” Pyro exclaimed.

“Is it better or worse than burning people to death during a bank robbery, or as part of some half-baked political protest?”

“Oh, give me a fucking break, Shaw!” Pyro snapped. “I know I’ve done some bad things – “

“Some bad things. What an adorable generalization, ducking out of all serious responsibility – “

“I know I’ve killed people, okay?” Not quite as many as some X-Men wanted to pretend, though. He mostly went for guards, police officers and soldiers, who, as far as Pyro was concerned, had it fucking coming. He hadn’t wanted to kill people to rob a bank, and there was never a need to if the civilians were smart enough to stay well back.

“But killing people doesn’t mean I can’t draw any moral lines, ever,” Pyro continued. “And I’m drawin’ a line right here. This is not okay.”

“Why not? Who does it hurt, really?”

“Well, surely the people whose bodies are getting rented out to sickos! No one would want that.” Pyro wasn’t sure he could articulate the sick churning in the pit of his stomach. It was something that went beyond logic, just a deep sense of disgust that seemed to well up from the center of his being. He was an open-minded fellow, he was willing to play fast and loose with a few morals, but surely some things were just….wrong. Right?

“What they don’t know won’t hurt them,” Sebastian said, waving a hand dismissively. “And apparently X-Factor is running some very interesting experiments with discarded mutant corpses over in their appropriately named “Boneyard.” And I’m quite confident that Sinister is probably churning out clones in his little lab, no matter how he might deny it. So whats the harm in my business?”

“Just because other people are doing it doesn’t make it okay! It’s like a….desecration, isn’t it?” Perhaps there was some of his Gran’s staunch Catholicism lurking under the surface, despite Pyro’s current status as…well, not an atheist, exactly, more like an agnostic who didn’t want to think about things too hard. He had to admit, a childhood of Mass and Confession and Hail Marys really got under your skin, no matter how long ago you walked away from the church.

“All this fuss over discarded meat,” Sebastian shrugged. “That’s all it really is when you remove religion and sentiment from the equation. Really, Allerdyce, I’m surprised at your squeamishness.”

“Are you really okay with it, then?” Pyro asked. “Letting some human fuck a mutant corpse? That’s what they’re doing it, isn’t it?”

“Not necessarily. I believe that’s the most common activity, but a few people want to cook and eat choice pieces.”

“Oh, that’s perfectly all right, then.” Pyro’s words were so heavy with sarcasm, they practically thudded onto the floor.

“Understand, Allerdyce, I find all this personally distasteful. I am disgusted by the idea of necrophilia, and even cannabalsim. But I see no reason to deny others, if there is money to be made. The ‘sickos’ will pay top dollar for discrete fulfillment of their taboo desires.”

“But do you really want to be putting mutant corpses in human hands? Haven’t they got scientists trying to study us or clone us or whatever? Put our DNA in Sentinels to make super-weapons?”

Sebastian laughed heartily. “Really, I didn’t think you were so naïve. Mutants have been in the public eye for several decades. The various governments of the world have been capturing mutant test subjects for a very long time. There are hundreds of mutants buried in graveyards and millions in the heavy layer of ash that still covers Genosha. If some enterprising human scientist wants mutant DNA, it would be very, very easy to lay hands on it. In fact, your own corpse is probably preserved in a government lab somewhere. In other words, there’s no point in closing the barn door at this point. The horses are long gone.”

Pyro couldn’t resist a full-body shudder at the thought. He knew, deep down, that his body was probably stuck in a metal drawer somewhere, or cut into chunks sitting in labelled glass jars. The US government had probably been interested in him as a Legacy Virus victim, back before the cure. It shouldn’t matter, but somehow, it did.

“And the bodies are only available for a limited amount of time, at any rate,” Sebastian continued. “Aside from the obvious natural impermanence of a corpse, I’ve had Sinister inject the bodies with a kind of “kill switch.” After five days, the corpse will dissolve, leaving no trace behind. The humans are only paying to rent, after all.”

“But wait…..” Pyro ventured. “What gives you the right to sell other people’s bodies? Shouldn’t they be the ones to profit off that?”

“What gives people the right to collect discarded trash?” Sebastian said, spreading his arms wide. “Would you begrudge the little old lady collecting aluminum cans for a few pennies from a recycling center? Or the struggling student who takes a sofa from the side of the road? That’s all these corpses are. Trash. Their previous owners have shiny new bodies – bodies gifted to them by Krakoa and the Five, by the way – and left no instructions as to disposal. I don’t use bodies from people who requested to be cremated, or some kind of ritual burial. Just bodies have have been carelessly tossed aside, by people who clearly don’t care.”

“Oh, well I’m sure you’ll be happy to explain that to everyone else, then,” Pyro said. “I’m sure they’ll all be totally understanding.” He realized a moment later, with a nervous twinge, that threatening to tell on the unscrupulous businessman while you were sitting alone in his massive castle and no one else knew where you were was a very stupid thing to do. Fuck. He should have at least claimed to have evidence left with a trusted friend or something, but he’d only just stumbled across this, while exploring the so-called “dark web.” Maybe he could bluff his way out of this.

“I told you, some Council members are already well aware,” Sebastian said, sitting back and regarding Pyro across steepled fingers. “I don’t think you’d find those in authority quite as willing to turn on me as you imagine, Allerdyce. In fact, it’s entirely possible that any attempt to inform the public will lead to a hasty mind-wipe for you.”

“I’ve got proof. I left it all on a flash drive with……” Freddy? Dominic? Mystique? “….a friend,” he finished, not wanting to actually put anyone else in the crosshairs. Hell, Mystique might even know about this. He’d like to think better of her, but she always had schemes within schemes going. He wondered which telepath on the Council might be in on this. Was Sinister a telepath? That arrogant piece of shit Exodus? He seemed too high-minded to approve, but that mission in the Savage Land had shown Pyro that Exodus did not give a single fuck about mutants that he considered weak or “unworthy.” Frost? Even Xavier? Pyro had never trusted that creepy bastard. Something about him had always seemed too good to be true.

Sebastian laughed again. “Oh, you think I’m going to kill you? That’s cute. Allerdyce, you are not in some ridiculous detective story. I am a practical man, and despite your bleating about morals, I know you are, too. I am willing to make you an offer. It’s an easy job. All you have to do is ‘keep mum,’ as they say.” Sebastian wrote a number down on a piece of paper, and slid it across the table.

It was, in fact, a very nice number. Enough to make some of Pyro’s disgust quickly fall away.

“After all, why shouldn’t you enjoy the same kind of luxury experienced by Krakoa’s elite? You serve aboard the Marauder, and you’re obviously on the lowest rung of the crew. None of the power and privilege weilded by the X-Men, none of the wealth bestowed by birth on Christian Frost, my own son, and the Von Struckers. And you do significantly more work than for the Hellfire Trading Company than those spoiled idiots. Why not take a little something for yourself?”

Pyro’s mind whirled. Of course, taking the money now would mean he was “in it,” so to speak. And if the secret got out, he’d probably be implicated along with Shaw, at least in the eys of his fellow mutants. Which would hurt a bit, after all his heroics with the Marauders. He was starting to feel, at least a little bit, like a good guy.

But on the other hand, if Sebastian was telling the truth, and some of the Council already knew, trying to tattle would just get him in the shit. It was all well and good to have movies about heroic whistle-blowers, but in the real world, they got slandered, ruined, and sometimes murdered. No one would stand up for a relative nobody like Pyro, especially if Frost and Mystique already knew. At best he’d just get mind-wiped.

It would be safer to just walk away and keep his mouth shut. And if he was going to walk away anyhow, why not pick up a paycheck for it?

They were just corpses, right? What a resurrected mutant didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them.

And it didn’t seem to actually be breaking any Krakoan laws.

And it was a lot of money.

And Pyro really did like money.

It wasn’t like he was a proper journo anymore, was he? No need for integrity.

Pyro pushed the paper back across the table.

“You’ll need to add a zero to that number before I’ll even consider it,” he said. “And this is just for silence, understand? I’m not gonna be your employee, don’t start expecting me to fetch and carry.”

Sebastian grinned, making a mark on the paper, and held it his hand to shake.

“I knew you’d see sense. It’s a pleasure doing business with you, Allerdyce.”

OOC: I was going to make that sillier, but the more I thought about it…..Sebastian probably would bribe Pyro to shut up, and Pyro would probably just take the money. He’s trying to be “good,” but not that good. Also, no offense intended to Exodus. After the story in the Quicksilver min-series, when Pyro is working with Acolytes on a mission for a supposed Legacy Virus cure (which doesn’t exist), Pyro probably holds a serious grudge against him.

The sea rose and fell, waves crashing against the rocks. The grey sky was visible through the octagonal windows of the town’s only pub, an uncharacteristic roughness to the tide that dissuaded others from venturing into their depths. As if the waves needed to do that job, the sky’s greenish hue should have been warning enough to the wizened seamen that that night was not one to go out. Plenty heeded it, crowding the space of the small pub atop the docks, wincing slightly whenever a shudder came through its wooden planks as a result of the wild sea.

Adrien sat on a stool to the side of the bar, hands gripping his pint tightly as he gazed past the bartender and out the window, his knuckles growing white from the pressure. It was his last night before returning home, perhaps his only night left with the ocean before he was stuck, honor-bound and landbound in a bustling city just in the center of France. Of course it had to be ruined like that, Neptune choosing to remind him that he couldn’t escape his duties, just like everyone else on the island did. He was not allowed another night in the crystal-clear waters of the island just off the coast of England, the fisherman had warned him that one final trip and he would never be able to leave.

No, he needed to be safe, he needed to stay away, he needed to go home- for his fiancée, for the future of his father’s trading company, and for his own sake. He’d been allowed this short time after his studies to get the adventure out of his system, he should have been thankful for that and able to move on. And yet…

“You’ll feel different when you’re married,” the bartender spoke. Nino was his name, and he’d tried and failed a hundred times to take Adrien under his wing and keep him out of obvious trouble. “The sea will call to you less.”

“Right,” Adrien agreed with a nod, digging in his pocket for a few silver to give. He’d already made up his mind long before Nino had spoken, the bartender’s voice only ringing him back into concentration on what he needed to do.

Knots and directions flashed through his head, what little he had learned in his past month of renting a boat leaking out. One last time, he would indulge just one last time.

The sea was no calmer out on the water, yet it provided a welcome reprieve from thoughts of responsibility and the impending future. The cantankerous dockman, Plagg, had only offered a knowing nod when Adrien had asked to go out despite the weather. Perhaps he knew that Adrien was a sailor at heart and that to say goodbye was like leaving a piece of him behind. Plagg had long stopped sailing as his wife grew old and his desire for luxury had long begun to outweigh his want for adventure, but surely he understood Adrien’s need to be one with the sea just one last time.

The water was calmer far off the shores, still rolling but no longer the crash of cutting waves against themselves. Adrien was appreciative of the swell, the way that the boat would move upward for a matter of seconds, then slowly roll back down. The water wasn’t as crystal clear out far, clouded by the endless depths, and the ebb of jade waters was a beauty Adrien would not forget.

It was dangerous, but when he was a family man, married off to a woman he’d never met and saddled with a business he never wanted, he would think of those waves and how enchanting they looked for one simple night. The only one out on the seas that day, he could claim that they belonged to him and only him.

Sails furled and the bow of his short boat remaining above the water; he let himself drift idly through the waves, the shoreline still well within distance. Most anchors were at least a two-person job anyway, and there was no way that he could convince anyone else to go out with him.

Which was why he was surprised when he heard a large splash on the port bow, the boat dipping slightly as water rolled onto the deck from a wave that had cut too sharply.

Adrien’s eyes widened as he jerked his head from the shore far behind him to the bow, rising to his feet suddenly as he feared what was to come. He quickly crossed the boat, rushing to look out over the upper platform to the lower deck, relief hitting him as he saw the water roll off the wood.

That relief left when he saw what it left in its wake.

He rushed to the railing nearest the stairs, mouth gaping for only a moment as he looked at what was one deck, quickly swinging himself on a baluster to run down the stairs to the deck, his mind gone blank.

A girl, it had been a girl.

Laying on the deck, a speckled grey cloak of some kind around her shoulders and her skirt splayed out around her, a black-haired girl’s body rested limp, soaked to the bone.

No, no, no. “Miss!” He yelled, dropping down beside her, his hands grabbing her shoulders and hauling her from the wood, pulling her above his bent knees and giving her a short shake.

No response.

Oh god. He lowered her to his lap, his fingers frantically pressing against her neck in search of a pulse. Just a hint, anything, that was all he needed. Terror gripped him as he looked down at the young girl’s beautiful face, jaw clenching as he finally steadied himself enough to press at the place between neck and jaw.

He barely felt her heart’s beat when she began to sputter, jerking in his arms as rough saltwater exited her lungs.

He flinched as she thunked against the wood, hands reaching out as if to catch her but finding her motion too sudden to grasp.

“You,” she began, her eyes very quickly looking from him to the sea then back again, a sort of stunned expression on her face. For a moment, he thought she would say he saved her, though he did nothing of the kind if you thought about it, but she merely continued to gape; the woman looked at him as if surprised, astounded that he could exist. Perhaps that was the appropriate response, all things considered. She likely fell from a shipwreck onto his deck or so other large miracle. How else would she get there?

Really, he had no words.

“The storm, I…” she seemed to fumble, eyes moving every which direction. Perhaps she was trying to explain herself, but Adrien didn’t mind. Shipwreck survivors didn’t need to tell tales, not in situations like theirs.

“I have dry, warm clothes below deck.” He was a rational man, and that was the rational way to respond. A soaked young woman washes up on your boat, and one’s priority should be drying her in some regard.

Her fingers tightened around the fastener on her neck, her voice responding, “I won’t… I…” She messed with the cape and he realized it to be important to her, a family heirloom or a gift of some kind.

“You can keep that on. I mean, it’s wet but I have pants, shirts, and jackets below deck. I’m sure you could stay warm and keep it with you. Even if you do take it off, I promise I won’t take it. You can hide it, I won’t go looking, and you can keep an eye on me if that makes you feel better. It’s just you and I on this boat…”

“You won’t take my cloak?” She repeated.

“Naw. I mean, it’s beautiful, gorgeous even,” he’d be blind to miss the sleek silver of it, the way that some of the furs on it almost seemed to glisten like moonlight, “but I don’t want to remember stealing a cape from a girl on my last night.”

“It’s sealskin.”

“It’s yours,” he reaffirmed.

She blinked, and he wondered what sort of place she came from, on what island did others steal from strangers so desperately in need.

Still, though she was wary and he hardly knew her, when she looked at him he thought how much he would like to remember her. Pink lips, dark eyelashes, clear blue eyes—how beautiful, and what a waste he should only know her for so long.

He stood, hand out to her to help her to her feet, face begging her to take it. She did, her small fingers feeling cold within his in a way that made him wish to ball his fist around her. He would be quick then, he figured, get her dressed as soon as possible and maybe offer his blanket below deck and whatever else the old man might have stowed away so that he may have warmed her sooner.

But she did not follow him when she rose. No, she kept him rooted in place, instead choosing to ask him, “What is your name?”

She mustn’t have been too pressed. “Adrien.”

“Adrien,” she repeated, the slightest of smiles on her face.

“And yours?” He responded, just as glad to ask; he had a devastating need to know.

“Marinette.”

“Marinette,” he said, and with her name, he almost felt whole. Her eyes gleamed at the mention of it, and he was sure that looked every bit the fool when he said it with such reverence.

“You are kind, Adrien,” she said, slowly stepping closer to him, “and I shall remember that.” Her lips brushed his cheekbones, and if he did not look like a fool before, he surely did then. She positively radiated at his response, his hand reaching up to touch where she had once been, an all-consuming love for the ocean somehow doubled.

Yet her fingers disentangled from his, her head slowly shaking as she pulled away. Disappointed filled him, and he was left only to stare as she backed near the railing, proclaiming, “I very much hope that we shall meet again.”

He was left defenseless as she leaned back, feet leaving the ground and body moving towards the water. A swell of the waves, his footsteps rushing toward starboard bow… and she was gone.

The softly speckled tail of a seal, curiously patterned just as her cape was, vanished beneath the waves as he watched. After that, how could he ever go home? The sea had done its part in convincing him, just as the fishermen warned, one last time out on the waves and he could never go home.
