In a way, one could compare him to a runner stripped of their weights. He'd learned unparalleled control with an arcane bomb strapped, but now no longer fearing his imminent explosion, is free, as goes the metaphor, to cast a god damned marathon. And Gale is learned. Rather, he's disgustingly learned. He knows all schools of magic, is qualified to teach every field in Blackstaff, and he doesn't serve his city or own his own floating realm, but he'll once again become archwizard in those ways that matter--in his ability to cast and his hellish ferocity. Maybe he won't become as great as he had been with Mystra, but as a former chosen, it's a helluvan accomplishment. In time, Gale Dekarios becomes Gale, professor at Blackstaff, but as a testament to his ability, the city again warms to the idea of Gale of Waterdeep--because she's really only one Gale one could possibly need.

Of course, he doesn't advocate for the title... But it still delights him.

Gale had a potent efficiency paired with his knowledge in high arcana #because why wouldn't he have that knowledge as Mystra's lover? #He might be a former chosen now but that knowledge doesn't go away #and Gale is sorta like Rock Lee when he took off his weights in the chuunin exams. #Don't @ me for my Naruto reference but I'm right. Gale without the orb after #learning to control it and his spell casting for so long #is kinda a menace now that he's been stripped of it. #I think being favored by Mystra allowed him to excel faster but Gale is still and had been a remarkable caster before Mystra #and will remain so after her. He isn't an archmage or archwizard in the traditional sense but he has a bar none unspeakable #talent in it and is so damn smart and capable and still sorta...I'm ngl...OP. #Also obsessed with ppl still calling him Gale of Waterdeep. Gale is not THAT ambitious anymore #so he didn't advocate for it...but it flatters him. And lbr Gale wouldn't quell his ambitions 100% anyway. #He's just wiser now. And a lot more humble with where those ambitions take him. He finds ample fulfillment simply teaching.

Honestly seeing all the new HOTD pictures is kinda surreal bc they actually make the show look cool? Like for starters just based on the pictures and few minutes of footage we have so far the costumes look ten times better than anything Clapton ever did in GOT, like… those costumes look like something rich medieval people would actually wear, and we even got variety and color??? And those trademarked silly GRRM’s helmets???? I can’t believe it.

I’ve also been reading the new article and some of the things they’ve added are also pretty neat, an tbh the source material is I think perfect for this kind of adaptation because it’s so flimsy and vague to start with the writers have a lot of leeway to tweak things and give more depth to the characters if they prove themselves to be talented enough to pull it off, which I think the audience will be able to make a judgement on that pretty quickly since the new writers won’t really have GRRM’s scenes and dialogue to fall back on the way D&D did, only the broad strokes of what happens in the story, but still a clear ending in sight (and given what happened with the original series, that’s a huge relief already).

And all of that leaves a sour taste in my mouth in what otherwise would be a show I would be excitedly looking forward to… mostly because of Dany, of course. And I don’t mean it in the sense of like, Rhaenyra “losing” at the end is equally as bad as what GOT did to Dany which is a take I’ve seen floating around an I don’t necessarily agree with. The Dance, the way I see it, is a conflict streaming out of sheer misogyny and what society would do in order to keep women out of power, and Rhaenyra is both a victim and a perpetrator of that, but the story is still very centered around the nobility and a commentary of what they would do to keep their status quo and power, no matter how they hurt the people who depend on them in the process. That’s like, the complete opposite of Daenerys “Why do the Gods make kings and queens if not to protect the ones who can't protect themselves?” Targaryen.

That’s the whole point of Dany imo, how much she cares and how she’s so willing to act in order to implement change and help those who need it, in spite of the repercussions that come with it. That doesn’t scream Rhaenyra to me (though I don’t know how the show is gonna flesh her out, and I’m curious to see Emma D'Arcy and how they work around to make the character more nuanced), but maybe that’s a topic for another post.

My point is that at the of the day, Dany is the original Targ, she is the most important Targ, the fact that there’s like 3 different Targ centered shows in development is only because of her, that’s her legacy, but still HBO didn’t care enough to prevent her character from being so utterly butchered. That’s the problem.

Too tired to write but also can't stop The Scenes™ from playing out in my mind.

#bits about Arvel's healing magic and also the man in the bar healing Kahn's broken bones #i mean it's not perfect and it's painful for both the man and Kahn for different reasons but it does work in the end #also just sort of trying to flesh out the healing magic in my head. for most people who have it (mostly loethan) it's close #range or on touch. depending on the person it might hurt or drain the caster too and they might have to be able to see #the specific injury or at least where it is (such as when the man in the bar has to cut into Kahn's leg and arm to see his bones) #it almost never works on nerve damage. never on organs except maybe internal bleeding or injuries so severe the organs are #exposed. (basically just trying to say it won't heal organ failure). so it's pretty much best for broken bones and cuts. works better the #more recent the injury was. technically has the ability to regrow limbs but that's most likely never shown. (torn between whether #or not veren gets his arm regrown or a prosthetic. probably prosthetic since he lost it years ago) #doesn't work on illnesses or poisoning or stuff like that. that's still the domain of alchemists. also since on the areas it shuts #does. I'm not retyping that. on the areas it does heal its just rapid cell regrowth which most of the time is fine. but then there's #Arvel. who can do it both on touch and at range and uses the whole rapid cell growth thing as a method of torture. add the whole #light minions thing and the fact that his abilities include a rapid healing factor on himself (and that unlike a lot of people #his abilities work rapidly on others and he can easily get over any drain it has on him) #and yeah it's understandable why Len loses the first fight and why a lot of people don't stand up to him much. even his wife who doesn't #have powers at all ends up progressively more afraid of him. like the only way to possibly wound him in a meaningful way is to get the #drop on him and find some way to inflict severe damage on a vital spot and keep whatever you used to do that inside of him long enough #for him to eventually not be able to heal around it anymore. i don't know just thinking about how he's such a twisting of typically 'good #guy' powers. like his main things are light and healing he should be the hero or like high up supporting cast but nope he's just #trying to subjugate everyone and rule the whole damn continent because of a might makes right ethos and the fact that he does #certainly have might on his side #maggot original
