#why crab day

Just to make my position on the subject of Crab Day clear, since word is going around that the idea came from a highly objectionable person, I’m going to quote rather than reblog @skaldish:
This I agree with. I've seen other posts go around about it, so it wasn't just that one person.
But to make it clear, I'll take the time to explain to people why participating in Crab Day (and financially supporting Tumblr in general) is important:
It's unfortunate, but in this day and age, large websites like this one can't function without an exorbitant amount of income. For other social medias, the bulk of this income comes from Business-to-Business (B2B) transactions, often in the form of selling user data.
The thing y'all need to understand is that wealth is VASTLY different in the B2B economy than it is with B2C (business-to-consumer) economy. In fact, this is a huge reason why we're in an economic crisis...because the US is a nation with two economies, and the power of the dollar is astronomically different between the two of them.
Tech's standard of wealth is based in the B2B economy. Because Tumblr is in the Tech sector, it needs to play according to Tech wealth. Unfortunately, the way you earn Tech wealth is by selling Tech-related B2B products, and for social media websites, that product is user data.
It's a competitive market that sets a new standard of rotten with every transaction. In order to acquire data that's more valuable than your competitor's data, you have to be less ethical about how you source it...and also be willing to cross moral boundaries in regards to who you sell it to.
If Tumblr finds no other way of sourcing income, they have no choice but to participate in this data market or shut down.
However, Tumblr is the home of the secret third thing. In this case, this secret third thing is to work with the community rather than exploit it.
(That's what it looks like to me, anyway. I nether trust nor doubt Tumblr's words; that's not what's winning me over. Instead, I'm curious to know where they plan to go with this, because this is unusual as far as business practices go and I think it would be cool if they're trying to set a more holistic precedent for the social media of the future. I won't be able to see that conclusion if they go bankrupt though.)
So yes, participate in Crab Day. Just because one unpleasant person also condones it doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Hey, fun fact about the Tumblr Crabs: if you leave a tab open from the crab time and forget about it ... you can still have crab friends several days later.
Behold my illicit crabs:

Me: [poking my writing muse] hey, hey, wanna write something? Writing muse: [squints at me with disdain at my negligence then huffs and pushes out a scrap of paper. The paper says: Angst for the raincoat chibi DCAs] Me: …why? why would you do this? Writing muse: Their cheery disposition and childlike innocence was an affront to my nature. Art muse's work uplifts while I gaze into the abyss. Writing muse: [starts tossing more scraps of paper] ...and here, some cute scenarios for those hairdressers for you to daydream about. Me: wait this is too much, i have to study-- Writing muse: Not my problem. Art muse: [smashes through the wall] DID I HEAR HAIRDRESSERS? LET'S DRAW ECLIPSE, HE'S HOT. Writing muse: Let's make 'em kiss. I already have the date chapter planned out. me: guys wait wait, i have an exam in three days, can't all these ideas wait? Writing muse: Art muse: Art: Ooh! And y'know what? Sun and Moon are sooooo Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer coded! Writing muse: [sings the lyrics] "knockabout clowns, quick-change comedians, tight-rope walkers and acrobats" Yeah that checks out. Draw it.

Okay, I want to make something very clear
While I’m thrilled and amazed that the Crab Day post has blown up so much, it’s important for everyone to remember that THOSE ARE NOT MY WORDS. Those are @skaldish‘s words, and you should check out his shop Lockwood Metaphysical and his side blog @prefrontal-bastard because he has some amazing philosophical insights. I quoted him instead of reblogging because I felt that what he had to say was getting lost because of the initial part of the post, an ask in which someone talked about the repugnance of the person who (supposedly) originated the idea.
Also, Crab Day is actually Crab Week, July 29 - August 5, because some of us don’t get paid until the beginning of the month.
Again, Zan’s words, not mine, just quoted to give emphasis where I felt it was needed.

gonna delete this later bc i know it’s unproductive to screenshot / namedrop and i actually am thinking the best approach would just be to privately share this thought w the dev who posted this in a possibly futile attempt to effectively advocate for the change i want to see (#worktag2 lol). but im workshopping it here w my beloved mutuals first as i always do which is kinda shooting myself in the foot given that the devs can probably see that but whatever. my thought is like… i get it. i really do. i get that this place needs to stay afloat and some of that is gonna involve sacrifice or something from everyone involved. but… why would you try to snuff out the things that make this place what it is and just make it like all the other places. why would you not even take into account how the changes are going to impact EXISTING users who are loyal even if they don’t pay. people aren’t going to come to tumblr for more tiktok and instagram. they’re going to come here for tumblr. for the anonymity and the customization and whatever. so like i just don’t get it. why is the solution to this problem to experiment with changes **that existing users won’t like** and not to listen to what existing users want and do more of it bc other ppl likely will want that too.

Yeah no hard disagree with this post. I'd understand the logic maybe a few months ago, but tumblr is making some EXTREMELY questionable decisions rn that really don't deserve rewarding.
Are they financially struggling? Yes. Is that bad for us? Also yes, but their solution is even worse! We've seen how they're planning to strip down posts, hide notes and move tumblr away from being a blogging platform and more into a twitter-instagram-tiktok mashup. American users are gonna stay stuck with tumblr live (which they confirmed is here to stay), they're stripping away huge amounts of features, and they're telling epileptic people to BUY AD-FREE IF ADS ARE STROBING TOO MUCH.
Honestly, if you'd told me they were in the red and planning to open donations/do crab day last year, I might've even donated. But tumblr needs to learn that pulling this shit is NOT gonna start making them money. If they want to get out of the red they've gotta start caring about their users.
Don't give them a damn penny till they back down from some of this shit. I'd rather watch the site burn to the ground without funding than watch it become a sanitised social media clone filled with advertisers and nothing that makes tumblr tumblr.
