Doubly Dubiously Designed — Thoughts on: Danger by Design (DAN)

Hello and welcome to a Nancy Drew meta series! 30 metas, 30 Nancy Drew Games that I’m comfortable with doing meta about. Hot takes, cold takes, and just Takes will abound, but one thing’s for sure: they’ll all be longer than I mean them to be.

Each meta will have different distinct sections: an Introduction, an exploration of the Title, an explanation of the Mystery, a run-through of the Suspects. Then, I’ll tackle some of my favorite and least favorite things about the game, and finish it off with ideas on how to improve it. In this meta, a section in between The Title and The Mystery will be The Historical Background, where we’ll dive into a what a mess HER made of this game and its history.

If any game requires an extra section or two, they’ll be listed in the paragraph above, along with links to previous metas.

These metas are not spoiler free, though I’ll list any games/media that they might spoil here: DAN, mention of SSH.

The Intro:

Holy eff, what was this game?

With Danger By Design, game #14 and our penultimate Jetsetting Game, Nancy kisses Blue Moon Canyon goodbye and flies off to the land of fashion, francs, and fabulous found fripperies — France.

Yes, it was a struggle to come up with so many f-words that made a mad sort of sense.

DAN is a case where they had two or three ideas for two or three different games, and then someone got high and was like “what if we smushed them all together and don’t make them gel together at all”…only none of the ideas were fully formed, so what you get is a tornado – heh — of different things whirling together, but the second the momentum dies, you can see that nothing is actually part of anything else.

There are just too many ideas in DAN to make a game that has an emotional (not to mention logical) payoff, and too few of them are actually used throughout the game to make a game that’s interesting. Add in the fact that the characters are flat in a way that they haven’t been for 10 games and that Nancy seems to have no concrete motivation for anything that she does, and you’re left with a uniquely frustrating experience — and one that fails to take advantage of its unique location in any meaningful way, unlike the other Jetsetting Games.

The Title:

DAN is based off of Nancy Drew Files: Death by Design, which is objectively a more enticing title, though not accurate to the game’s story at all. As it stands, Danger by Design is a pretty good title; it clues you into a vague danger, it establishes not only that it’s about fashion — design — but also that the plot is being orchestrated by players that aren’t immediately visible — design.

I would actually hazard to say that DAN’s title is the most successful part of it; it doesn’t have any gaping holes, it’s catchy, easy to abbreviate — it’s only small problem is that “danger” is a super common mystery title, and that there have already been several other games with “danger” in the title — Stay Tuned for Danger, Danger on Deception Island — so it could improve from a series-naming standpoint. Otherwise, this title does all that it needs to without extraneous detail.

The Mystery:

Summoned to investigate why a famous French designer has suddenly gone crazy, Nancy’s going undercover for the…at least third time in this series so far. The designer, Minette, has taken to wearing a full-face mask with a discomforting lack of air holes and firing employees like most people eat mini-MnMs.

All at once, out of a tube, before they melt and discolor your hand. Or something.

Minette has been running behind, and Nancy is supposed to figure out what’s causing her temper tantrums and slipping schedule, amid threatening letters and insistent phone calls to the moulin where Minette houses her studio. Amy Grunhild, her boss, is wondering what’s up with her behavior and hires Nancy do to some old fashioned snooping.

Once in France, however, Nancy finds out there’s more than meets the eye, both with Minette and with the moulin. Nancy somehow finds herself in the seat of international espionage, a historical futz-up of epic proportions, several fashion faux pas, a mint shortage, flooded catacombs, and the highly graphic murder of the French Language.

As a mystery, let’s be honest: DAN is a mess. A good ol’ Southern may-yuh-suh. The A-plot (Minette) and the B-plot (Noisette + History) intertwine maybe once on the surface and then basically are separate games, no focus is given to anything so it feels jumbled and messy, there’s not enough to do and too much space to do it in…the list goes on.

The focus is honestly the part that upsets the mystery the most; by the time Nancy’s down in the catacombs for the nth time, Minette is pretty much a distant memory, but when Nancy’s trapped with the stained glass, you’re reminded of Noisette suddenly and rather uncomfortably. There’s no clear mystery — there’s in fact at least two very unclear mysteries — and so there’s no clear story.

Now, let’s get to the players who contribute to the mess.

The Suspects:

Minette — real name Tammy Barnes — is supposedly an up-and-coming fashion designer, but is tackling projects that are more what a seasoned professional would handle (like making a dress for the First Lady). Her fierce rivalry with designer Hugo Butterly feels like a looming spectre overhead, and her timetable has begun slipping more and more since she donned the mask.

Why she, an inexperienced plus-size designer is designing a gown for the First Lady (who in 2005/6 was a small, petite woman), neither I nor anyone else has any ideas.

The real reason Minette’s timetable is a disaster is because remnants of the East German Police – no, stay with me here — are threatening her into making the First Lady’s dress complete with electronic bugs so that they could hear what’s going on at the National Summit.

Minette’s the closest thing we get to a culprit — she’s the one we fight at the end — but she’s also a victim of blackmail and threats herself, and I do find it odd that, unlike in other games, she’s not treated as a victim at all; Nancy never teams up with her, never helps fight her enemies, and is never really sympathetic at all. With Minette’s personality, it’s not a shock that Nancy doesn’t sympathize, but I do find it a little odd that the blackmail thing is just kind of glossed over.

Heather McKay is Minette’s only long-time employee, who vents her frustration with her boss by sending her threatening letters every so often. Absurdly young for her position — Heather is at most 23, given her graduation date from Waverly Academy — Heather also designs her own fashion on the side, hoping that working for Minette will give her the contacts she needs in order to be a successful designer.

Heather’s designs also happen to be hideous — did HER have no one with any fashion sense at all working on this game?

As a culprit, Heather would have been interesting, but unlikely; as the person closest to Minette, she’s already the most suspicious, especially since she could be delaying Minette to make her desperate and then offering to step in and “save the day” with one of her own designs. As it is, Heather ends the game far more successful than she should be, and avoids any taint of having worked with Minette.

Dieter Von Schwesterkrank is the red herring — I mean, the German fashion photographer centered in Paris, and the great-nephew of Noisette Tornade’s Nazi lover, Hans Von Schwesterkrank. Originally dating Minette in order to explore the moulin and find Noisette’s treasure, he found he had somehow developed actual feelings for her by the time she broke the relationship off.

As a culprit, Dieter would have been incredibly dull; he barely has enough personality to fill a teaspoon, he’s the obvious red herring due to him and the conspirators both being German (not to mention the German occupation of France in World War II, where the historical background is set), and he would get nothing out of messing with Minette, as his job does better the more that fashion designers thrive.

Jing-Jing Ling is an Australian (and presumably also part-Chinese, given her name) “plus size” (by this game’s standards; I talk about this later) model who was tricked into a contract with Minette and is Nancy’s roommate during Nancy’s time in France. A chronic liar with an interest in circuitry and engineering, JJ also spends her time baking and eating cookies —yeah, because that’s how a model keeps her size 12 (American size 10) figure, wow — and being easily duped into giving up an autograph via a game of Hangman.

The wet dream of both the catacomb-climber Zu and of Joe Hardy himself, JJ is my preferred culprit if I had to choose just from the cast; outwardly friendly while also outwardly manipulative, with the perfect excuse for going out at all hours of the day and night — Minette is an eccentric, remember — and smarter than she seems. She’s also related to both the “Secrets of Paris” plot (through Zu) and the Minette plot. Her being the culprit would make this an entirely different game, however, and so as the culprit in the current game, she’s an iffy choice at best.

Rounding out our physical suspects is Jean-Michel Traquenard, owner of the easiest to pronounce yet most mangled name of the whole game…and editor of Glam Glam Magazine. He’s also the only Frenchman in our suspects, and one of three probable Frenchmen in the entire cast (Zu and possibly Lynn Manrique, judging by her last name).

As a character, Jean-Michel is unique and memorable; as a culprit, he’s a non-entity. While he could have been more than just a place to see a photo and get a sprig of mint without painting bad replicas of famous paintings for 22 hours, he sits comfortably at Café Kiki, not caring three straws about the havoc happening both in the fashion world and in his city.

There are so many phone characters in this game (most one-off, but still), so I’ll run through them briefly.

Zu is an explorer of the Parisian catacombs, who helps Nancy get down there to explore once she gets him the aforementioned autograph from JJ. He’s fun to talk to, and necessary to the plot, but doesn’t show up quite enough. An interesting twist would have had him be one of the existing cast, but no one quite fits the bill.

Lynn Manrique is a one-off historian who wants to talk to Minette about the moulin and Noisette, but who keeps being blown off. She gives Nancy a bit of info, then promptly disappears again.

Hugo Butterly is another brief phone character, giving about as much information as you’d expect from a hoity-toity fashion designer. His convo with Nancy is mostly to rule him out as a suspect. He would have been a cool option for also being Zu. Ah well.

Prudence Rutherford, in all her glory, shows up as a phone friend here, and is one of the most memorable parts of the game — not shocking, as she was just as enjoyable in Secret of the Scarlet Hand. Here, she’s sent off a request to Minette for a few outfits that of course Nancy has to put together.

Sure, what Prudence wants is an eyesore, but a delightfully Prudence eyesore. Perfect for a woman who’s good friends with P. G. Krolmeister.

Finally, let’s talk a bit about the woman who started part of this game.

Noisette Tornade — literally “hazelnut tornado” in French, which is the oddest name ever – was a member of the French resistance during World War II. Though loyal to France, her boyfriend Hans was loyal to his native Germany, and their relationship resulted in Noisette being seen as a traitor.

Though acquitted, Noisette remained bitter towards those who distrusted her, and hid the treasures of Paris that she had saved for the rest of her life to punish them.

Interestingly enough, when you’re playing this game for the first time, you really do feel like Noisette is supposed to be a sort of tragic hero…but Noisette is not a good person, or a moral person. Even after being exonerated and elected as Director of Public Works for the rest of her life, Noisette is too bitter to restore the art to the country, and refuses to believe she might have acted in the wrong by knowingly and deliberately harboring a Nazi.

Perhaps in early planning stages (and I say planning very, very loosely), Noisette had been executed and was supposed to be a tragic figure who did nothing wrong. But Noisette wasn’t a good person, and any points she might have gotten for saving art disappear when she decided that because she was suspected due to the fact that her boyfriend was a freaking Nazi, the city would pay for it — forever.

The Favorite:

There’s some good stuff in DAN (even if most of it doesn’t come to fruition or feel deserved), and they do deserve to be mentioned.

Jean-Michel is by far the best character that this game has to offer, and he’d still be pretty good in a game that was a bit better. Apart from his painful pronunciation games with Nancy, he’s a lot of fun to talk to and has a great character design. A larger than life character needs a larger than life wardrobe, and Jean-Michel delivers.

My favorite puzzle in the game is the Prudence costume design; while it’s not a hard puzzle and doesn’t really make you feel very accomplished as a puzzler, it is a whole lot of fun and a way to design some of the ugliest outfits known to man.

My favorite moment in the game is anytime Nancy spends time in JJ’s apartment; it’s so well designed and homey without being ugly or kitschy. Baking cookies is prolly the best moment — I wouldn’t call it a puzzle, it’s more like just a task — because it just feels nice and relaxing.

The Un-Favorite:

It’s a small thing, relative to the rest of the things wrong with this game, but I hate that a size 10 (size 12 in France, which converts to an American size 10) is defined as plus-size in this game when in 2006, the year this game was released, a 10 was nowhere near a plus size. It’s a small detail that they very easily could have gotten right, and they didn’t bother to even check.

My least favorite moment in the game is easily the Minette fight that turns into Nancy trapped with Noisette’s artwork. Nothing quite illustrates the fact that they had no idea what story they were telling and no idea how to end the game more than the fact that we go from a slo-mo kung-fu fight to a hall of French artwork and no one’s quite sure which one is supposed to be the climax.

My least favorite puzzle is the catacomb puzzle; while the catacombs are cool to explore, navigating them is a frustrating experience, only made worse by the fear of getting lost – or the rats stealing things that you really, really need.

While most things in DAN bother me to some degree, the game is so uniformly disappointing that not a lot of things stand out over each other, so we’ll move on to where the actual work begins.

The Fix:

This is one of the few games that, in order to have a cohesive plot, storyline, and motivation for all (or even any) of its characters, needs a complete re-write to the setup along with changes to the “plot” progression itself.

The first big problem to fix is the reason Nancy’s there in the first place. It doesn’t make a lot of sense that she’s there to figure out what’s wrong with Minette — she should have a lot of specialized knowledge in order to be an assistant to such a major designer — and the justification is flimsy.

There’s also the problem that our historical characters aren’t heroes, so to try to “exonerate” Noisette when France already cleared her of everything except bitterness is, quite frankly, not a very heroic endeavor. Having this B-plot marginally tied to the A-plot by the fact that the Germans are the bad guys in both really isn’t great either — and certainly isn’t enough justification for the writing to be this bad.

To fix both of these in one fell swoop, shift the story in the past slightly.

Perhaps Noisette and Hans are still involved, but Noisette manages to turn her boyfriend against the Nazis and they spy on behalf of France, including saving France’s art from the hands of the Nazis and hiding it. The French government, however, doesn’t trust either one of them, and executes them for treason against the French state. Noisette and Hans carry the location where they stored the art to their graves, believing it to be unsafe with German sympathizers still around, but leave clues with friends and around the city, wanting it to be found in due time.

Cut to 2006, and Hans’ descendant Dieter Von Schwesterkrank has found evidence that Hans and Noisette were loyal to the French cause and were executed unjustly. The evidence is enough that he believes it (perhaps a work of art or two deemed ‘stolen’ by the pair has turned up in the family, but without any provenance, causing issues of authenticity), having always heard growing up that Hans was working for the French, but he knows that no one else will unless he can dig up more.

He tries to seduce Minette — an actual Frenchwoman in this version — into letting him hang around the windmill where Noisette and Hans once lived. He accidentally falls for her, but she breaks it off due to the external pressure, leaving him both heartbroken and unable to search more.

Having gotten the phone once in the moulin and been subject to one of Prudence Rutherford’s calls, he learns about a hotshot teen detective in America named Nancy Drew who’s worked undercover before and will take any job.

Needing her help, Dieter writes Nancy, telling her that he’s got a job for her and that he’s just trying to figure out how to get her a visa to come to France. Using Heather’s crush on him,  he mentions an intern from the States that he’s heard of that can supposedly handle any boss, no matter how obnoxious — and the wheels start spinning.

Once Nancy gets to France and gets the low-down on Minette, she goes to visit Dieter to get her real assignment — to balance working for Minette while finding proof of Hans and Noisette’s innocence.

With those changes in place, the game can proceed relatively unchanged in the order of events, albeit with more importance given to Dieter and less on pointless minigames with Minette. As Nancy tries to find out more about Noisette and Hans, she also notices Minette acting strangely: refusing to talk to people, communicating through emails and instant messages, falling further and further behind.

Zu changes from a wacky one-off character with an obsession to the expert in the catacombs and their use by the French Resistance during WWII; Lynn Manrique from a simple historian to a French Art historian specializing in identifying forged works of art and in art trafficking during the War.

Instead of Noisette’s plotline getting swirled into Minette’s, Minette’s issues are swirled into the larger plotline of proving Noisette and Hans’ innocence through finding the missing artwork and, along with it, the proof that they were working on behalf of France all along.

In the interest of not changing too much, the bad guys can still be fringe German extremists looking to destroy Noisette and Hans’ hard work (or perhaps who have a personal grudge against Hans in particular) and so threaten Minette, but rather than threatening a world summit through a bugged dress, they’ve been stealing fabric, designs, unpicking stitches — whatever they can think of — to delay her collection in the hope that she’ll think that the moulin is cursed and move to a different location, allowing them to search the building top-to-bottom to find the art that they suspect is hidden inside.

I know that this Fix section seems quite long, but it’s all really worldbuilding and premise changes; once a few motivations are shifted and the villains’ objective changes from something that the player doesn’t care about to something that they will care about, the game improves itself rather quickly.

WWII isn’t my preferred time in history to learn about, but even I can acknowledge that passing off the French occupation as “ah those wacky Germans” and “seriously and actively dating an actual Nazi shouldn’t get you suspected as a collaborateur because That’s Mean and if people suspect you just hide French national treasures because that’ll show them” isn’t a great look, nor does it fulfill the “edu” part of “edutainment”.

2 Kings 13:1-14:29, Acts 18:23-19:12, Psalms 146:1-10, Proverbs 18:2-3

Today is the 28th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is always a joy to be here with you, always good to come around the global campfire and just relax and let God's word speak to us, always a pleasure. So, we’re moving into the end of the week now. We’ve been reading from the Contemporary English Version this week and we’ll continue that as we continue our journey through the book of second Kings. Today we’ll read chapters 13 and 14 as we continue through the kings, the stories of the kings of Israel, the northern kingdom, and Judah, the southern kingdom.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we end another one of our workweeks together and continue to journey through the book of second Kings we’re seeing, you know, the back-and-forth between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the northern and the southern kingdoms. So, at times, they’re allies with each other and they go to battle with each other and at other times they’re enemies with each other and battling against one another. And, of course, this is…you know…the whole dynamic of the situation is influenced by who is the king, whose the king of Israel, whose the king of Judah, and then the prophetic voices played a role in all of this mix as well, even though the people usually ignored them. But we did say goodbye today to one of those very influential voices, the man of God, the prophet Elisha died after giving a final prophetic word to Jehoash who was king of the northern kingdom of Israel.A

And then we move into the book of Acts and Paul is beginning his third missionary journey and working his way into Ephesus where he spent two years, and this is Paul's final recorded missionary journey and we’ll see why soon enough. But we also see that his opportunities to share the gospel and to have influence will only grow even though he's not traveling around the known world anymore. And it's gonna be in the most counterintuitive ways. And, so, we’ll see that as we continue with the story

And in Proverbs today gives us plenty to think about as it relates to our opinions. So, we probably all have people in our lives who have or seem to have an opinion about just about everything that there is and then they love to give that opinion without permission, right, unsolicited and it doesn't even matter like what the topic is, they just seem to have an opinion on everything from politics to relationship advice to parenting to you name it without actually taking the time to form and fully understand and create a well-rounded collection of thoughts. They just spout off whatever's happening at the top of their mind and they seem to know very well what everybody else should be doing. A lot of times we take a look at those people's lives though and they don't know what they're doing. They just seem to know what everybody else should be doing. So, this is strong medicine here. This is a big teaspoonful full of something bitter. According to the Proverbs, those people are fools. It’ not understanding that they're looking for. Its hearing themselves talk that they're looking for. So, let's use today, and as we move into the weekend and change the flow of our lives for a few days. Let's observe ourselves. Let's watch for what it is that causes us to offer an opinion. Are we asked for an opinion or are we just offering our opinions where they don't belong because we might catch ourselves moving into foolish, foolish territory and places that are not healthy, but the good news is that this is how we actually become wise. We catch ourselves. We watch ourselves. We hear the words of wisdom spoken from the Proverbs and then we watch ourselves and then when we can catch ourselves like being pulled toward throwing in our opinion into the mix when it's not necessary or not invited or not even welcomed and we really don't know the situation. We can invite the Holy Spirit. That’s gonna guide us away from being foolish and back onto the path of wisdom.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come into that. We are all guilty of stepping into foolishness. We are all guilty of playing the fool in these areas. And, so, we ask that You would come and You would help us observe our own behaviors, the things that trigger us, the things that pull us in these directions and we ask that we would be able to pause before we open our mouth and begin a dialogue with You. What is this about? Why am I about to jump into this? Why am I often finding myself jumping into these things? We invite You Holy Spirit into these questions and into these observations. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty name, we ask. Amen.

Listen to everything that he needs to tell you, advanced words about how the second half of your year should look and where you should be aiming yourself. And just enjoy the serenity that comes as a result of just taking the one day. It’s incredible. Your call is so brave, calling in about struggling with anorexia and it was on my heart immediately to pray for you and to call in. Well done. You are going to a program and you’re gonna face…you’re gonna face this and I’m so proud of you. I struggled for years with anorexia and still find that there’s lies that try to keep back in during times of stress. And it occurred to me while praying for you that our pastor just spoke on Nehemiah and how Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall to Jerusalem there were people that came and just flat-out tried to discourage him and in response to their lies about God and about his responsibility and role in all that he literally would do the opposite and proclaim truth out loud and it really challenged me on some different areas and I thought of you and the struggle that anorexia is and I am trusting that God is using this and will continue to redeem your situation and help you conquer this and every day that the struggle. And trusting for that for you Natalie. He loves you, I love you, and my heart is with you and for you as so many peoples are who are listening and praying for you right now. Well done. Hello, this is not shaken and I’m calling about two of my many children that are having problems in life. One who is currently…he is currently in jail and I’m just praying that he will get his act together. He claims the reason he’s in jail is __ been thrown out of court but he does have addiction problems that I have called about in the past and he is on their radar and they are wanting to put them away which may be the best thing for him but all I want is for him to get his life straightened out, whatever it takes. And then the other child that I’m calling about, her name is Lynn and she was on drugs years ago, many years ago and she did a lot of terrible things to the people who love her, some of which you have not forgiven her and she has since then, for at least the last eight years, been off drugs completely. She’s a wonderful mother and an amazing person, one of the most wonderful and amazing people I know, is kind and loving and caring. Free Indeed from Western Maryland. Brian’s talked today at the end about the reminder of a long walk coming up. It reminded me of Jason Upton and his phone where he talks about the idea that we go to God and we asked for forgiveness. Most of us don’t wait around long enough to hear him say that you’re forgiven. So, that’s my encouragement. If you’re on the long walk you have something that’s heavy on your heart, if you go to our father and ask for forgiveness, be still and listen for him to tell you that you’re forgiven because you are forgiven. Hey, this is Jerry calling from Duluth Minnesota at my __ request stop, a place that has a lot of meaning, piled many many spiritual rocks with the DAB family to mark and remember what God has done and today is another vessel day in my life. It marks first of all two months of every day being in the Daily Audio Bible in a concentrated focused manner. I’m so amazed at how we can be this connected in the world in which we live in. Never before in the history of mankind has there been anything like the world wide Church of God of the DAB family. Nothing like it. And the app…years ago that you had to download it from iTunes and every month Brian would say make sure you read the reviews, so it ranks higher and all these things. Now, with the app, which is so amazing. I mean just little things that they worked so hard at. Making it so that you can check off each day that we’ve spent. And now that they have and use this function of reading along with Brian so that I can stay focused on what he’s saying, drink in every word of Scripture, every word that he speaks afterwards and all the prayer requests. “I’d never make a fool of you, Mr. Sharp.”

Deryn doubted that was true, but she slid her icy glare fromLilits’s smirk to the bundle of clothes that had been shoved into her arms. Thegirl’s clothes.

“We need you to help us pick out the spices at the bazaar,”Lilit continued, “And as I understand it, you and the sun aren’t exactlyfriendly with one another.”

“So you’re giving me a dress,” Deryn said with an archedbrow, “You know I usually make do with a cloak or something.”

“And while that certainly brings an amusing picture to mind,we do not want to be spotted.” Lilit unfolded the garment to show dark drapingcloth that looked more like a circus tent then a garment, “And lots of women goabout in burkas.”

Taking the black folds and spilling them over her head,Deryn had to admit it was the most covered she had ever been. Take theheaddress and incorporate some trousers and perhaps this solution was evenbetter then the ointment aboard the Leviathan.And really, she didn’t mean to make that much of a fuss. Alek was in the room grinning at her so she needed toact all flustered for his sake.

“Most becoming,” He commented with a smirk.

At least he couldn’t see her face as she rolled hereyes.  

“Why cant we just go once the sun goes down?” Deryn argued furtherout of some boyish obligation, “Don’t you Turkish have a night market?”

“Not since your ship has joined the Sultan’s fleet, we dont,”Lilit said.

“Its true, Dylan,” Alek said, “Ever since the Leviathan has docked in Istanbul thelocals have been weary. They are afraid of infection spreading amongst them asit did in Britain.”

That was true enough, but suddenly Deryn wasn’t thinkingabout the bazaar. Something about the way Alek and Lilit finished each other’ssentences bothered her immensely. At first she had assumed they were lovers, orat least wanted to be. Lilit was pretty and Alek was handsome, both of them hotblooded and young, Deryn assumed it was only natural for them to fall into eachother in the usual way. But after weeks of watching their antagonisticinteractions coupled with Deryn’s new awareness of human emotions, she couldsee plain as night that there was no arousal between either of them. A little partof her was relieved by this- it would have been barking annoying otherwise, but another larger part was only further upsetby it.

It would have been easier if they did like each other. IfDeryn told herself that they were lovers then it might be less painful to watchhow easily Alek spat rebuttals to her constant harassment. Like each other ornot, the two obviously trusted each other. Alek insisted that he trusted Derynas well, but always flinched whenever she flashed her fangs and became nervouswhen she moved too quickly. None of this was apparent in Alek’s interactionswith Lilit, and Deryn was starting to realize that his behavior aboard the Leviathan wasn’t at all because he wastwitchy by nature. Lilit was human,didn’t have pointy fangs or incredible strength, there was no reason for Alekto ever believe that Lilit would harm him without meaning to.

A sentiment that would neverextend to Deryn.

Deryn huffed out a sigh that became more of a growl, and asif to illustrate her point Alek’s pulse jumped in his throat. Not Lilit, Derynnoticed, but Deryn had decided she didn’t want to care whether or not the daft lassie had a reasonable apprehensionof her. More then anything Deryn wanted to somehow tell Alek that he could feelsafe around her too, that Deryn would neverhurt him. But she couldn’t. Not just because the boy wouldn’t believe her,but also because it wasn’t exactly true.

“In any case,” Lilit went on, “It makes more sense for us togo as women, why would young men need so much spice? And you will doubtlessneed to go into the city during the day again, we need to have of a way totransport you under the sun.”

“Suppose I can’t argue with that,” Deryn said, pulling theblack tent off her head, “Us new recruits always had to step out in sunlight atleast once so we don’t lose our barking heads if it happens by accident. And Ican tell you, its far worse then having to wear a dress.”

It had been a full week since Deryn had been out in the sun,and quite a few years since she haddone so without her ointment. Even underneath the veil Deryn sometimes tiltedher head wrong and shooting needles of sunlight pricked the bits of skinexposed. It was the kind of petty annoying pain akin to a paper cut, if paperwere sharp enough to cut her these days.

Alek hadn’t come along of course. He had better things to dothen much about with a half mad anarchist lassie and a crossed cross-dressinglegal undead. So they walked the streets together without any sort ofchaperone, and oddly enough, Deryn found that no one seemed to mind. It wasalmost as though wearing this huge barking tent made it safe for even two girls to travel the streets alone.

Even still, Deryn couldn’t bring herself to feel as thoughshe belonged. Aboard the Leviathan, withits daily cocktail dosages and undead crew, Deryn could almost feel normal. Yesif she went out without her sunscreen on the reaction would be a bit more explosive then what a normal human wouldexpect, but surrounded by other legal undead Deryn could forget that any ofthem were less then a dedicated crew.

But this was a real city, full of real living human beings.No one here had to convince themselvesthat they weren’t monsters. They just.. weren’t.It reminded Deryn of when they had dropped into London to pick up the LadyBoffin, or even those first days of Alek being aboard. But even then at leasttheir scents had been mingled with that of the beasties, at least Deryncouldn’t smell Alek or Dr. Barlow on the spine or in the gut. Here in thisClankerland, however, there were only thesmells and sounds of human blood coursing through the populous. No matter whereshe went it was nothing but sweat and iron, as if built specifically to torturea relapsing legal undead. It didn’t help that now, without the cocktail, Derynwas reduced to just under a teaspoon of blood every day. It was all Alek couldspare without getting sick himself, and none of the other men were willing tooffer their veins.

“How much would you say, sister?”

Deryn was shaken from her thoughts as Lilit jabbed herelbows.

“I wouldn’t know,” Deryn said, in a twisted voice that triedto sound like a boy who was trying to sound female, “You know better then I dowhat we’re up to.”

Lilit frowned behind her own veil, Deryn just able to seeher brows through the tiny slit. It seemed she wanted Deryn to weigh in more onthe subject, but Deryn refused to. She was here to lift heavy ceramic pots ofspice onto the cart, not play make believe. Well, any more then she usually did, anyway. And even if she didwant to, it was hard to think in all this barking sun. Even though Deryn wasincapable of sweat she could still feel it. The heat muddled her head and madeher sway on her feet, now more then ever she was distinctly aware of thepeaceful thudding of hearts all around her. Deryn’s fangs felt too large forher mouth, the razor tips clicking against each other as she tried to stayawake and fight down murderous intent simultaneously.

Eventually the girl turned back to the merchant and haggledin Clanker talk, a dialect that Deryn didn’t understand. Time passed slowly,but finally Deryn was helping Lilit with their purchase. Throwing a tarp overthe pots Deryn even debated asking if she could ride in the cart, but knew thatwould only get a wise remark. So she walked alongside the mechanical donkey,trying to convince herself the sputtering of gears was the same as the thrum ofan airship.

The trek through the bazaar was slow and agonizing, stoppinghere and there to buy spices and lift them onto the cart. It was only whenDeryn tried to lift a small child instead of the pot that Lilit felt itnecessary to comment.

“Are you quite alright, Dylan?” she said in a hushedwhisper, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you stay quiet for so long.”

The right answer was to snap that she wasn’t exactly builtfor this weather in the best of times, even moreso under this barking burkathingy, but Deryn finds herself croaking out something different.

“Thirsty.” Sherasps, sending an audible shiver through Lilit.

There was a silence between them then, Deryn was aware thatLilit’s heart rate had risen dramatically but not at all as Alek’s had. It wassome new scent, something Deryn was faintly aware of but couldn’t quite name. Whateveris going through the girls mind, she nods.

“We have enough for now,” Lilit said, “We can head back.”

Deryn nodded dumbly as if she were the one mesmerized, and allowed herself to be pushed ontothe cart where she sat still until they reached the garage. Back they went intothe merciful darkness, Deryn was too dazed at first to notice she wasn’t beinglead to the comfy weapons locker she usually spent the days in.

Instead she found Lilit tugging Deryn up the stairs into thehouse, which couldn’t be right because she wasn’t allowed up there. Even withAlek’s assurance that Deryn wouldn’t hurt any of them, Zaven had politelyinformed Deryn that while he appreciated her contributions to the revolution allowinga literal bloodsucking fiend upstairs to where he and his family slept was a bit much for him. Derynhad been very understanding, and very understandingly pretended that she didn’thear the click of a silver lock every time she retired to her makeshift ‘coffin’for the daylight hours.

“Wait…” she choked, “I’m not…”

“I’m inviting you,” Lilit said mischievously, “Isn’t thathow it works?”

There was more to say on the matter then ‘aye’ but Derynstopped there anyway. Up the stairs she was tugged, into a cozy kitchen anddown pleasantly furnished corridors. By the time Lilit closed her bedroom doorbehind her, Deryn had cooled off enough to protest.

“This is hardly appropriate,” she said flatly, pulling theheaddress from her shoulders.

“I don’t see why not,” Lilit said pulling away her owncoverings, “We’re both girls afterall.”

The correct reaction was to assume that Lilit was onlyteasing her, and had brought her up here with entirely salacious intentions,but Deryn found herself tired of playing games.

“What gave it away?”

Lilit smirked with satisfaction.

“You made no attempt to pinch me below the belt,” she said,“I’ve never met a man so sensible.”

Even though she really should be more concerned by thisdevelopment, Deryn couldn’t help but snort at this. “I’d imagine most men youmeet are too fond of their hands for that sort of thing.”

“Yes, but they learn that through experience,” Lilit saidloftily, “You never asked for a lesson.”

“Neither did Alek,” Deryn said.

“He’s a gentleman,” Lilit rebutted.

“Aye, and I’m dead,”Deryn said, “That has a tendency to stop any randy impulses in their tracks.”

“Does it now?” Lilit asked coyly, “That’s not the impressionI get when you latch onto Alek and roll your eyes like a wild animal.”

“I roll my eyes?” Deryn asked with a frown.

“Or maybe they just go white, like a shark’s,” Lilitshrugged, “You’d know more then me.”

“Not really,” Deryn said, stripping out of the burkacompletely to sit on the floor, “I’m just as new to this whole business as Alekis.”

Again she felt the lethargy of a week without a proper feeding.

“…Its really notpreferable,” Deryn added, after a while.

Again there was that spike of emotion in Lilit of thenot-fear-but not-quite-the-other thing-either variety.

“Is there something wrong with Alek’s blood?” she asked.

“Nothing at all, except that I need a lot more then he cangive,” Deryn said, “Back on the ship I’d feed twice a day and get a lot morethen what I can from Alek.”

She grunted.

“It’s a wonder I’m not completely blacked out by now.”

Another silence, more painfully long moments where Deryn wasacutely aware of how alive and warm Lilit was compared to herself. How easy itwould be to close the distance between them and take what she needed. Without aword, however, Lilit decided to close that distance herself.

Deryn managed a “You shouldn’t,” but Lilit only counteredwith some rationalization about Deryn being a help to no one as she was now. Andit was all perfectly logical really, the more people who contributed to helpingthe healthier both Deryn and those contributors would be.

It was odd, seeing Lilit submit so completely, even beforeDeryn used the Mesmer. Unlike Alek who not-so-secretly-as-he-thought toiledwith fear and disgust, Lilit only saw the necessity of the circumstance.

That made it better.

Deryn had always rotted with guilt at how good the fear hadtasted, that maybe she enjoyed scaringhim. But this just felt so much more right.Lilit wasn’t doing this because Deryn knew some secret about her or because ofa mistake in the Alps, but just because she knew that it had to be done. It wasan agreement, a friend helping a friend for no other then the fact that shecouldn’t bear to see her so haggard.

All these thoughts flowed through Deryn’s mind, distractingher for long moments that should have been spent carefully calculating how muchshe could take. It was only too late when she realized she had taken too much.Lilit’s pulse had gone faint, Deryn gripped her arms tighter as she realizedthat she was just about ready to kill her.

Before she knew what she was doing, Deryn was putting something back into the girl to fill it’splace.

As soon as Lilit’s pulse returned to normal Deryn shoved heraway, instantly feeling as strong as she had from her first taste of freshblood. Deryn panted, worried that she might have killed the girl after all. Fora few awful moments Deryn forgot the girl was Mesmerized, before calmlyremembering to snap her out of it.

A wide grin spread across Lilit’s face the moment she cameto.

“The transformation is remarkable,” She marveled, going totouch Deryn’s cheek, “You look like a lit lantern.”

Deryn snorted out a chuckle and wiped her mouth, “Aye, Ifeel a lot better. Mind you I cant take as much as I just did in the future,but I think this will definitely make things easier.”

A knot in Derynconcering her feelings for this girl seemed to loosen.

“Thank you, Lilit,” she said, “That was dead decent of you.”

Lilit was already rising to inspect her neck in a mirror,dabbing her fingers against the pricks to see if they would bleed.

“No, thank you, Mr. Sharp.”

Deryn rolled her eyes at this, “I’ll be sure to try andpinch your bottom from now on.”

“And I’ll be sure to break your arm,” Lilit said, “Although,I doubt I’ll be able to. Your grip is monstrous.”

Deryn laughed at this.

“That’d be because I’m a monster,” she said, “Now if you’llexcuse me, I think I need to go back to my cage.”

Lilit nodded, still looking at the bite marks in her mirror.For whatever reason, she couldn’t quite make out her reflection. Almost as ifit were fading away in the glass.

Squinting through their telescopes at the twinkling heavens, few 19th century astronomers would have imagined the cosmic wonders awaiting discovery in the century to come. 

Stars so dense, a teaspoon of their matter would weigh as much as a mountain. Objects so compact, literally nothing could escape its gravity. Even galaxies had yet to be revealed in all their sparkling glory.

Theory and technology have opened up the Universe, allowing us to not only see the invisible, but to hear the very footsteps of dark, distant giants. It’s hard to believe anything could remain hidden from us out there, yet there are still hypothetical objects that will make your head spin.

Perhaps future astronomers will pin them down.

Black dwarfs

Once they’ve exhausted their fuel, suns like ours are destined to become Earth-sized spheres of highly compact material, where every cubic centimeter weighs about a tonne. While they continue to glow white hot with leftover heat, we can call these objects white dwarfs.

Since white dwarfs no longer actively squeeze the living daylights out of fusing atoms, they do cool. Eventually. In about a hundred million billion (more or less) years they’ll finally be at equilibrium with the background temperature of their environment and completely dark. 

Our Universe is barely much older than 13 billion years, so there’s no point in looking yet. Give it time, though, and our sky will one day be a graveyard of star corpses we call black dwarfs.

Likelihood of them existing: Near certain (just be patient).

Thorne–Żytkow object 

Fortunately, our Sun’s retirement is still a few billion years in the future. Before it switches off its engines and becomes a stellar boomer, our nearest star will loosen its grip on its atmosphere and let its waistline go to fatten into a red giant.

It’s not entirely clear if the baked remains of future Earth will sit inside the boundary of the bloated star, or if the steady loss of the Sun’s mass would cause its orbit to drift sufficiently. 

If our planet were to take a hot dip, the constant wash of plasma slapping its surface would be more than enough to put the brakes on its orbit, causing it to spiral inward to its doom in no time.

But what if our planet wasn’t a wimpy ball of rock, but something with heft, like another star? Could it hang around at least a little longer, circling the guts of its red giant companion like a cosmic goldfish inside its infernal fishbowl?

That’s the idea behind a Thorne–Żytkow object. It’s named after physicists Kip Thorne and Anna Żytkow, who in 1977 crunched the sums on the melding of a red supergiant and a neutron star under a particular set of circumstances. 

By their calculations, a neutron star could wobble about inside the red giant for as long as a couple of centuries before eventually merging with the core, either forming a heavier neutron star or, if the mass was right, collapsing into a black hole.

Back in 2014, the astronomical community thought they might have found an example of such an object in the star HV 2112. Not all researchers are convinced it’s the real deal, leaving the existence of these hypothetical hybrids unconfirmed.

Likelihood of them existing: Pretty likely (the numbers add up – we just need to find one).

Boson stars

According to the Standard Model of physics, particles come in two varieties. 

Team fermion represents the building blocks of matter; chunks of reality that don’t easily overlap, allowing atoms to congeal and molecules to grow.

Then there’s team boson. Its zoo of particles includes those that govern the behaviors of forces which allow fermions to hold together or push apart, giving rise to everything from nuclear decay to the spectrum of light to the entire field of chemistry.

Unlike fermions, bosons have no qualms about occupying the same space. Pile twenty in the one spot, there’s always room for twenty more.

Theoretically, there could be a loophole for bosons to resist being so friendly. A hypothetical boson called an axion, for example, could find itself repulsive enough to resist overlapping even when clumping together under its own mass.

Throw enough axions together in a way that balances their positions and you could have a cloud of bosons that wouldn’t block light or emit their own. Similar to black holes, we’d only be able to identify these dark boson stars by their gravitational influence on their surroundings.

If they existed, they could help explain dark matter, but that’s a big ‘if’.

Likelihood of them existing: Low (we still have no compelling evidence axions are a thing).

Darkino fuzzballs

So here we are, at the start of a new decade of the 21st century, and it feels like we’re barely any closer to knowing what on Earth this weird phenomenon called dark matter really is.

Is it a slow moving particle? Does it interact with itself in some way? Is it concentrated like a black hole, or does it act like a shadowy fog?

If we make some rather generous assumptions on what it might be – say, a self-gravitating particle with a tiny mass that would make a puny electron look like the Incredible Hulk – we might imagine enough of the stuff just might sink towards a galactic core and form a giant ball.

Thanks to their tiny mass, this ball would be surrounded by a fuzzy halo of dark matter particles taking their time as they sink down. It would stop short of collapsing into a black hole while still collectively weighing as much as a few million Suns.

That’s a lot of ‘ifs’. Still, it could explain why objects orbiting close to the chaotic center of the Milky Way aren’t moving quite as we’d imagine if they were circling a more compact mass.

The gravitational pull from a fuzzball of these so-called darkino fermions could pull just enough on the orbiting masses to account for their orbits.

Likelihood of them existing: Pretty low (we have to work out what dark matter is first).

Antistars

Creating a universe like ours involves an impressive two-for-the-price-of-one deal – for every particle of matter that pops out of the seething ocean of quantum foam, an oppositely charged particle of antimatter also appears. 

You need to be quick, though. If those two opposing particles meet again, they’ll wink out, leaving nothing but a puff of radiation.

Given all the matter surrounding us, a whole lot of cancelling out clearly didn’t take place 13.8 billion years ago. Either a bunch of antimatter never appeared for some reason, or if it did, it was whisked away, locked up, or wiped out before it could cancel out a Universe of stuff. 

It’s one of those mysteries physicists are hard at work trying to solve.

The funny thing is, if a star made of this missing antimatter happened to be hanging up there in the night sky, it would look just like any other blazing ball of gas. The only hint to its nature would be signature flashes of gamma radiation as its atoms of anti-hydrogen were annihilated by occasional bits of matter that happened to smack into it from time to time.

Earlier this year astronomers published the results of a survey that looked for such tell-tale flashes. After whittling away anything that didn’t have an easy explanation, they were left with 14 candidates of antistars.

That doesn’t mean there are at least a dozen stars made of antimatter in the Milky Way – these candidates could still end up being known gamma-ray emitters like pulsars or black holes. But if antistars exist, this unique gamma-ray twinkling would be exactly their kind of song. 

Likelihood of them existing: Extremely low (might make for a good Star Trek episode, though).
