Poachers turn their sights on Namibian Rhino. Last year was the highest poaching on record. Authorities say 87 rhinos were killed compared with 45 in 2021, most of them poached from the country’s largest park, Etosha On a positive note at least elephant poaching has declined from 101 in 2015 to four last year. * It’s even more important now to support wildlife protection & conservation bodies now more than ever. On International Orangutan Day on August 19, we show our support for orangutans. This day is meant to inspire people to take action to safeguard this amazing animal in the wild. It’s no surprise that orangutans are intellectual because they share 97 % of their D.N.A. with humans. This could explain why the term ‘orangutan’ means ‘forest person’ in English. 🦧

Personifying prehistoric beauty, theological relevance, and environmental importance, this August 12, we honor one of Earth’s most magnificent creatures with World Elephant Day. Over the last decade, the number of elephants has significantly dropped by 62% and they could be mostly extinct by the end of the next decade.
It is estimated that, every day, 100 African elephants are killed by poachers. The desire for ivory in Asian markets has led to the slaughter of thousands of elephants. World Elephant Day was created to raise awareness and create change to save these majestic creatures. Since its founding in 2012 by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand along with over 100 elephant conservation organizations worldwide, World Elephant Day has reached millions of individuals who love elephants and want to do whatever they can to help.
World Elephant Day is a day where organizations and individuals can rally together to give a voice to the issues threatening elephants.
This powerful, collective global movement offers a way to establish and endorse conservation solutions to make the world a safer place for elephants and their habitats so future generations can appreciate them.
Let’s combine all our efforts on August 12 for World Elephant Day 2021 to help preserve and safeguard elephants from the multiple threats they face. 🐘

Cheese! Or should I say bananas!
Selfies have become an integral part of popular culture in this generation. And in 2011, a group of macaque monkeys joined in the trend when nature photographer David Slater went to Indonesia to photograph wildlife.
During Slater’s absence, a cheeky monkey named Naruto managed to trigger the shutter and you’ve guessed it, took a few selfies. Those photographs soon went viral and became known as ‘monkey selfies’. However, not everyone was pleased by this peculiar turn of events. In 2014, an animal rights organisation, namely People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a lawsuit against Slater, claiming that Naruto (the monkey) should be recognised as the copyright owner as he was the one who took the selfies. On the other hand, Slater argued that he should hold the copyright because he set up the camera equipment.
In the end, this case was dismissed because a federal district court in the United States ruled that copyright law did not extend to animals and animals couldn’t be considered legal authors. But before the court could issue a ruling, both parities reached a settlement where Slater agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds to animal welfare organisations. A win-win situation!
Naruto v. Slater (also known as the ‘Monkey Selfie Case’) sparked discussions about the evolving intersection between animal welfare and law, as well as raised awareness about the potential exploitation of animals for commercial gain surrounding wildlife photography.
