hope it's ok to pop in here about this but re your posts on destiel vs wincest. I love destiel but I made an entirely separate blog (this one) to post about wincest bc people are. less than forgiving about it on that side of the fandom. and like being personally against it is whatever, you do you, but like the amount of toxicity just got to be too much for me and I wanted a separate space to be "weird" about my interests ya know. also just wanna say I've found so far that the wincest community is so lovely <3

yeah. i don’t actually dislike destiel much at all on its face. it’s just that the community surrounding it, the way it gets talked about, the narrow way you’re allowed to enjoy it…

none of that is enjoyable to me. for the brief period of time i engaged in destiel stuff after nov 5th, i felt like i was posting from inside a panopticon where if i so much as mentioned anything slightly outside the realm of acceptability, i’d be hunted like a dog for it. (not an unreasonable assumption on my part, because i was in the community, i saw people get harassed until deactivation for the incredibly minor “crime” of say. having a kudos on a problematic fic on AO3.) had fun for a month, learned how to perform that enjoyment to still be welcome in the community, got progressively more and more stressed because i didn’t feel safe talking about anything else i enjoyed about supernatural, and now that i’m out of there and can post freak shit freely, i’m a lot happier.

(i was joking earlier about how i’ve only been insulted on here by destiel fans, but it is like. you know, between the community that was so proud of itself for being about a revolutionary gay ship and the community of people getting freaky with the blowjob brothers, i’ve only been called a slur by someone from one of those groups. hell if i know whether there’s scientific basis for a correlation of how morally righteous someone thinks their ship is and how comfortable they feel sliding into someone’s DMs to say insane shit, but anecdotally? ain’t the brotherfuckers who have told me to kms.)

putting all that seriousness aside lmao, i’m glad you’re having a good time being free to do some wincest on the side. it really is a hell of a lot of fun, and also there’s so much to get into, you know? i mean, wincest is a foundational modern ship. it was big enough in the early 2000s to shape the landscape. there’s an abundance of fic and fanart and meta that’s really just got us spoiled.

also so real so true. the world would be a happier place if people let wincestiel in. we could achieve balance in the force. two houses both alike in dignity…. they should make out sloppy. what can i say, im a threesome shipper where i see it, and castiel might be the only character in the whole show who could be in the eye of hurricane winchester and survive there.

On the importance of platonic love: fanon romance vs. canon relationship dynamics in Supernatural.

Hey I’ve seen some posts going around about this little niggle, and I don’t want to say I’m exceptionally qualified to talk about it, but I have been an active participant (and celebrant) of relationship anarchy for most of my adult life and I also practice non-monogamy, though that’s far less relevant to what I’m gonna be talking about here.

This applies to all fandoms where people are shipped together and obviously have a connection but are never officially made canon, but since spn is my shit rn and a lot of this particular flavor of discourse seems to be centered around Sam and Dean’s relationship (which I’m also slightly maybe embarrassingly obsessed with?), I thought that’s what I’d focus on.

Basically what I want to say is that there’s nothing wrong with pairing characters together romantically in your fanfictions and headcanons (hello! im a big gay wincest/destiel/wincestiel multi-shipper, myself!), but arguing that Wincest (and Destiel to a lesser extent) went/was always canon really, really undermines the importance of non-romantic long-term relationship representation in popular media. I mean, seriously, how fucking cool is it that Sam and Dean are canonically soulmates and also brothers and also ride-or-die-best-friends? There isn’t much precedent in TV for the kind of complicated, blurred-lines dynamic that these dudes share, and minimizing it to they fuck or they’re just brothers really diminishes one of the best Right Things™ the show managed to accomplish. The same can be said for Dean and Castiel’s relationship, too.

I think we as fans can do a better job of celebrating non-romantic canon relationships while also still shipping them together in fanon spaces. There’s a problem our communities seem to face where we have a really hard time distinguishing where the line is between The Written Word and What My Heart Wants, and both of those things are totally good and valid! But—here’s the part that I see people struggle with—you can appreciate both at the same time. In my headcanon, Sam and Dean fuck because I have a deep desire for complicated, all-consuming romance and I want to turn any two characters with chemistry into a thing. But as it pertains to my real life and the brain I reserve for fandom meta and social-justicey-intersectionality-ish-issues of representation and breaking from hetero-normative standards, I want to see more varied and sundry takes on the non-traditional family unit, on what it means to be queer platonic with your brother, on loving and cherishing your angel best friend more than society typically considers acceptable but without having the expectation of more.

This is a lot. But I just want to celebrate that we got to watch a television show on thee CW network buck societal relationship norms for fifteen years!!! Despite its failings in like, every other area of representation, this one is a big win from me and it’s just really cool and good so thanks for listening. I love you. Bye.

Just looking for someone out there that likes Sam/Jared, Cas/Misha, and ships whatever the fuck they want without harassing real life people about it.

Like Destiel fans usually hate Sam, Wincest fans hate Cas. And my ass is over here like I don't get it. Just wanna be friends with everybody? I like everybody? That's why I fuck with Wincestiel fans. Very rare, but very understanding. Megstiel fans are top notch too.

I'm only critical of Destiel because so many fans of it are aggressively possessive about it, and can some Wincest shippers. Yes Wincest is canon, but I have so much love in my heart for other ships and can respect them all equally. Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp?

My break is almost over so sry if this is a jumbly mess.

Supernatural Liveblog (Episodes 1x06 - 1x08)

These notes were made while we were watching and they’re much funnier than the ones we made afterwards bc we’re real bad at remembering stuff.

We’re all still on the incest train and I’m starting to worry that by the time Cas shows up, I’m going to be actually invested and end up shipping wincestiel. Am i allowed to make “this fandom is a curse” jokes yet or am I still too new?

Supernatural 1x06 - Skin

We open on a lady tied to a chair, a guy with a knife, and SWAT descending on the house while sexy rock music plays. N: This is.... an elaborate BDSM scene Me: I WAS JUST THINKING. N: This show walked so Hannibal could run.

Lmfao @ Dean's face when Sam says he's a cop. He lies about this all the time but when Sam does it he's suddenly all pissy? "You're a real straight shooter with your friends" Well Dean maybe if you had any friends to lie to you wouldn't be so judgey.

The camera focuses on a suspicious man, whose eyes flash white. We all ooh. P: okay, but he's not a demon, because his eyes didn't go black. Me: must be the opposite of a demon! P: An angel? N: A horse. Me, laughing: I actually know what it is from tumblr. N: Is it a horse?

Dean, after getting an I told you so moment about Sam's lying, "This whole gig isn't without it's perks," he says, and hands Dean a gun. Me: this is America, you don't need to hunt monsters and demons to get a gun P, the only American in the room: You get one at birth.

The scene where Sam figures out Dean is being impersonated by the shapeshifter is really good. But also after it finished I looked at P and N and said, "would you guys be mad at me if I said that was really gay?" N: Not even a little P: Same, babe

And then we get Sam tied up and a Dean lookalike (Deanleganger!) leaning in all close saying "He's got issues with you" like WOW.

I really enjoy seeing more of Dean's issues through the shapeshifter's eyes, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't also enjoy how sexual this tension is.

Dean waking up tied up in the same room as Sam later P: Was he just... Like... Hiding under a sheet of canvas? N: I think he was supposed to be unconscious, but like who knows Me: I think he was hiding. "Jesus Christ, guy, please don't tell my brother I'm into him."

Then P said xe were kind of into Dean in this episode and N&I agreed that both Sam and Dean were looking good this episode. P laughed at us for having the same taste, and I pointed out that it's not that surprising because we're both into xem.

Supernatural 1x07 - Hook Man

Dean doesn't want to paint the guy purple, but he'll watch over a magazine.

P: maybe he's not repressed, maybe he's just a voyeur

P thinks that being attracted to reverends' daughters is The Lesbian Experience

Dean talks about losing his mum N: "Hey, I have trauma too" Me: That's like, his one move. N: To be fair, in real life, it WORKS P, looking at me: It's how we got together. P, looking at N: Actually, it's how we got together too.

Dean looks longingly at the party and then says he's going to go dig up unmarked graves. P: That's a bisexual mood. Sorry, Dean. N: Making out with cute people and hanging out at a cemetery aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

N argues that cemeteries are queer safe spaces because: no one else around, film nights, church-adjacent and therefore just the right level of sacrilegious

Dean is being extra bisexual in this episode, which is fun for an episode about religion and emotional repression.

Me: Hey what was this episode called? N: Man door hand hook car gun? P, looking at phone: Hook Man. Me: Seriously? P: I found it by googling "Hand hook car door supernatural"

Supernatural 1x08 - Bugs

Me: Oh I think this is the episode with the bees that didn't show up on camera and had to be CGI'd in later.

Lmfao @ Sam and Dean being mistaken for a couple. N: Oh yeah, they know what they're doing. Me: It's too early for them to be seeing what fandom is picking up and reacting to it. P: They're definitely doing this on purpose

Getting strong homophobic dad/queer son vibes from the insect kid and his dad. Sam is very soft with the kid (to the point of picking up his spider?? UGH but also aw) which I like

N finds the spiders very cute and cuddly. P and I are not so convinced.

Dean is fully in the wrong with his whole "Don't tell the kid to leave his dysfunctional family! Why are you acting like Dad did anything wrong? You yelled at him too!" schtick, and I make no excuses for it. My heart does hurt for him as well as for Sam, though. I'm pretty sure the reason he's so hurt by Sam identifying with this kid is that he did everything he could to shield Sam from their dad's abuse, and if Sam still feels this way then what was it all for? Also, their dad wasn't the only one Sam left. Like, I wanna forcibly cuddle Dean and yell "Sam was right to go! You can leave your dad too!!" but I understand why he feels this way.

I tuned out while they were explaining the reason the bugs are all attacking but I think the gist was something something ancient burial grounds? P and N were like "Seriously??"

On the bright side, at least they did not actually break the curse. N says "Hiding in an attic for five minutes with an improvised flame thrower until the sun comes up is pretty anticlimactic, but it could have been worse!"

Final comments:

The funniest thing is how there’s an episode where Sam and Dean are mistaken for a couple and it’s still not as incesty as the one where Dean gets replaced by a shapeshifter who can access his innermost thoughts.

Home is Where by ChasingRabbits: destiel modern AU. Dean is a drifter. When he comes to visit Sam, he meets his roommate, Castiel. This is an incredible exploration of the autism spectrum, Dean’s tendencies to handle his problems poorly, and the brothers’ strained relationship.

traveling light by @reallyelegantsharkfish: Dean and Castiel, broken messy individuals that they are, over time, screwing up and loving the hell out of each other. This is such an amazing fic with what feels like a very real, nuanced look into a trans character. I was stunned by this story and the amazing amount of heart and emotion that pours out of it.

And This, Your Living Kiss by opal_bullets: Dean is a renowned poet, who wrote under a pen name. He’s broken and tired, and ready for a change. Enter professor Castiel Novak. This fic is a work of art. It broke my heart. It inspired me. It made me feel unworthy to write words, and insanely inspired to read and write and create and consume and hold these characters with me forever. This is powerful, powerful stuff and I cannot possible recommend it enough.

riptides by @reallyelegantsharkfish: It was supposed to be a one night stand, but Dean keeps coming back. This is an incredibly sweet, real, beautiful view of BDSM, of relationships, of people becoming, of hard things being a little bit easier with help and support, of the kind of relationship I wish I could be part of because it is messed up and human but infinitely kind. This is just an incredible story, and shows incredible heart and it stuns me every time I read it. Which is often.

Touched by @unforth: Dean was abandoned when he become a skinwalker. He’s lived in his canine form for years, and he’s taken in by a kind stranger. He doesn’t trust people anymore, but maybe Cas is different. This has a little bit of a darker tone, but it is an incredible saga of trust and the human heart and resilience and Dean’s constant struggle between wanting to trust and always being on his guard. This is an epic, wonderful tale.

Dirty Laundry by VIPJuly: Dean goes to therapist Castiel and admits that he’s a serial killer. This is chilling and beautiful, in the way that Dexter is chilling and beautiful. The characterization is stellar, the story is well paced and plotted and has enough twists to keep you going. These are dark versions of Cas and Dean, but potentially the creepiest part is how reasonable, how believable it all is.

The Shadow in the Corner by @malmuses: Dean is the Red Hand, one of the best the Men of Letters has to offer. He’s investigating mysterious deaths associated with photographer Castiel’s work. This is a Steampunk MASTERPIECE. I’m a sucker for world building, and this is just incredibly done. Put down whatever novel you’re reading and read this instead. It’s fascinating, in character, plotty, sexy - what more could you ask for?

Wincestiel

Run So Far (That I Am Standing Still) by Dick Baggins: Sam goes to therapy because he has unrequited, unacceptable feelings for his brother. Therapist Castiel Novak falls for Sam and wants to help him. This story! It’s well paced, well plotted, sexy as hell, and has a hell of a pay off. Dean is really dark, but completely understandably. I am a sucker for the slow build, and this is just incredibly well done.

Sastiel

Ancient Cultivars by wingstocarryon: Sam tries to help Castiel deal with trauma. There is some incredibly dark stuff going on, here, but it is beautifully done. I found it incredibly moving, and believable and intense and wonderful. Read the tags, but if it’s anywhere near your comfort zone, do not hesitate to read this. It is truly amazing.

RPF

Black Cat Mercantile by @zmediaoutlet: Jared is from a well-to-do family, and is planning a new sculpture. Jensen runs a shop on the wrong side of town that carries just the sort of thing Jared needs. I am SUCH A SUCKER for world building. This is beautiful, the magic is incredible and fascinating. The writing is incredible, you hardly realize you’re absorbing all these details as you learn all about this world that is so different and in some ways very similar to our own. RPF can sometimes feel invasive, but I didn’t find this to be that way at all. This is an adventure all it’s own.

6. List your OTP from each fandom you’ve been involved in.

Oh damn so many. And almost all are “problematic” ships; just because I can’t stand assholes and fight for victims of toxic relationships in real life doesn’t mean I can’t love asshole characters and take enjoyment from dark pairings. Draco/Hermione was my first OTP, along with Snape/Hermione. Sylar/Peter from Heroes, Kirk/Spock from Star Trek, Wincest, Dean/Benny, Destiel, Samstiel, and Wincestiel are all kind of tied for Supernatural. Sherlock/John from Sherlock. Reylo from the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. I’m sure I’m missing some but those were the big fandoms I had prolonged involvement in.

11. Who is your current OTP?

I don’t really consider Stan/Reader and Ford/Reader eligible to be considered OTPs, so I’ll go with the other fandom I’m heavily involved in; Reylo.

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?

Though I never wrote any fanfic for this ship myself, the somewhat obscure podcast The Thrilling Adventure Hour has a wonderful show called Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars, and the OT3 of Sparks/Red Plains Rider/Croach has always held a special place in my heart. I love poly ships to begin with, and the push-pull of mildly antagonistic love between the three of them is so damn charming.

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

Oh god, some unspeakably badly written Draco/Hermione fic when I was about 14.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

So far, Must See: Mystery Shack remains one of my favorites. I’m just so proud of the banter!

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

I woudn’t mind seeing fanart for Must See: Mystery Shack or Blooms of Fortune. The reader bent over the “mermaid” display with Stan behind them would be so sexy and funny for Must See: Mystery Shack, and Ford looking dazed and lust-struck up at the reader from Blooms of Fortune would be lovely.

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

I don’t really have anything specific that comes to mind, but I will say that I once got recognized by my username at a Supernatural convention and I just about died at how rad that was.

1:What is your Supernatural OTP? Destiel.

2:What’s your opinion on John Winchester? I have a lot of strong feelings about that fucking dickhead.

3:Which season finale was your favorite/least favorite? Favorite: season 8′s was really good. Least favorite: season 10. We almost had Dean in space.

4:Which is your favorite episode? Either Changing Channels or The Man Who Would Be King

5:Which episode makes you cry the most? The episode where Ellen and Jo die ALWAYS makes me cry.

25:Do you think Destiel will become canon in season 9? (Regardless of whether you want it to or not) Christ this is old. Unfortunately they did not. But fingers crossed for season 14, aka their 10 year anniversary.

26:Have you ever had a dream about Supernatural/the characters/the actors? If so, can you describe what you remember? All the time. I used to be able to lucid dream to some extent, but since I’ve gone off my psych meds I can’t seem to do it as much anymore. The most recent one I had was the other night. I don’t remember it too clearly, but Sam and I said bye to Dean and Cas before heading off on some sort of mission or something.

27:Which episode is the scariest to you? (Horror-movie type scary) That episode where Sam got his throat ripped out this season was the first time Supernatural has actually scared me. Other episodes have been suspenseful, but I was legit scared during those mine scenes.

28:What’s your opinion on Sabriel? I don’t really see it. MAYBE unrequited on Gabriel’s side, but other than that I just don’t get the appeal.

29:Do you think End!verse will happen? If so, are you looking forward to it? Well, Lucifer’s dead now so I’m guessing no. If End!Verse does happen, Dean and Sam’s places are going to be swapped.

30:Do you have any friends off of the Internet that watch Supernatural? Yes.

31:Do any of your family members watch Supernatural? I got my dad and my brother to watch it, but they kind of dropped it. My mom is currently watching it and I regret everything that has led to this point in my life.

32:What’s an unpopular opinion or headcanon you have? The “romantic” subplots in the Scoobynatural episode were gross and the episode would have been better without them.

35:What’s your opinion on Samifer? That... really depends on the vessel Lucifer is in. See, I’m a fan of selfcest so if I do read Samifer stuff, I always imagine it as Sam basically fucking himself.

36:If you have an OTP, at what point did you start shipping it? First time I watched. Literally that second episode Cas was in when he was standing in the kitchen with Dean and told Dean to show him some respect I was just like “...are they gonna fuck?”

37:Do you think Sam should have completed the demon trials? Nah.

38:Which director/writer is or was your favorite/least favorite? Favorite: I don’t know. I don’t really pay attention to the good writers because I’m too busy enjoying their content. Least favorite: Bucklemming really needs to be fired or relegated to only filler episodes.

40:If you could be any character on the show, would you want to? If so, whom? If not, why? Nah. I kind of like being me. I’m the only person I know how to be.

42:What is your opinion on Sastiel? Is it Samstiel or Sastiel because I just don’t know. I prefer it fluffy. For whatever reason I have trouble getting into smutty Samstiel.

44:Have you ever cried over a non-OTP ship from the show? I’m not entirely sure what this question means... Like, have I ever cried over characters in the show that I don’t ship? Yeah. It’s Supernatural.

50:Can you dig Elvis? Fun fact: I never finished that fan fiction. I loved every moment of it, but I got as far as Dean meeting Adam in Vietnam before I chickened out because I knew there was a bunch more pain on the way.

51:Do you listen to Carry On Wayward Son even when you’re not just watching a finale? I used to, but I’ve since been conditioned to feel pain every time that song starts playing.

52:What’s your opinion on Zachariah? Good antagonist.

53:Do you think Adam will ever get out of the cage? (not as Michael) Not at the rate we’re going.

54:Do you think Sam should have completed the trials? Why are there repeat questions?

58:Have you ever participated in GISHWHES? I did the first year (the one with the pigeon rat mascot). It was fun, but it was stressful to the point where I don’t want to do it again.

59:What movies/shows have you watched because of (or by coincidence) Jared, Jensen, or Misha? Jared: House of Wax... kind of. I turned it off as soon as he got murdered because it was just awful. I also tried watching Gilmore Girls, but I dropped it after two episodes because every character in that show is either a terrible person or blah. The Supernatural Anime. Definitely still doing it!

Sexuality headcanon: gay gay GAY gay gay. In human!AUs. Usually ace/panro or ace/homoro except I do headcanon him as agender so there’s no real ‘homo’ in there. He likes guys. Dean specifically. He’s ace or grayce or demi, depending on what I’m writing he’s sometimes interested in doing the stuffz with Dean and no one else. He’s pretty much demiro, if I really think about it, but theoretically he could like other men.

OTP: Destiel. No contest. I’m definitely into Sastiel and Wincestiel/TFL as well and I’m oddly getting into Gabestiel but nothing holds a candle to the beauty that is DeanCas.

BrOTP: Sastiel, definitely. I have about a billion Sam-and-Cas-being-bros headcanons. Like when Cas settles into his spot as Dean’s boyfriend he starts labeling Sam as his best friend and Sam reciprocates easily. I also have the most random headcanon that Dean is such a lazy jerk that he never cleans up after himself so Sam and Cas end up doing all the dishes in the bunker together twice a week and Sam introduces Cas to about a billion musicals so that they can belt showtunes together while they scrub Dean’s disgusting plates because that’s what he fucking gets.

NOTP: pretty much anything with Cas not involving Dean, Sam, and/or Gabriel. If I have to pick one probably Cas/Crowley. Idk why, it just grosses me out.

First headcanon I think of: he approaches everything new that he sees with this childlike wonder and awe and Sam and Dean just go full heart-eyes for it and teach him about everything they can. Also he supports trans!Sam and Dean so fucking much, like to the point of threatening to smite transphobes. He’s so great.

One way I relate: he’s so out-of-place sometimes. He doesn’t fit in. And I’ve been bullied my whole life for an entire array of things about my personality, so that really hits me hard.

Thing that gives me secondhand embarrassment: he doesn’t get anything. He doesn’t understand technology or social norms or how human interaction works (especially in S4-5, he’s kinda cringe) and it just makes me go ‘oooof’.

Cinnamon roll or problematic fav: CINNAMON ROLL! CASTIEL IS A GODDAMN CINNAMON ROLL AND HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST OTHERWISE. except S7 godstiel that was kind of problematic fav but bygones
