WIP excerpt: Smallville does not approve of Clark Kent's parenting style.
Cathy Mueller is mad at Clark. He has no idea why, but she's going to absolutely no effort to hide it.
"How's your boy, Clark?" she asks frostily as she bags the hardware store purchases he's making for Pa. They're visiting the farm this weekend and Clark's promised to help him with some repairs to the barn.
"Oh, Jon's fine. He's doing really well in school right now," Clark attempts, trying to smile at her in an attempt to disarm her a bit. Usually she's not quite so . . . touchy. For some reason, though, Cathy only seems to get madder.
"Do tell," she says in that same frosty tone, and thumps his filled bag very loudly on the counter. "And how's Conner doing in school?"
"You'd have to ask Ma or Pa about that, I'm afraid, I don't really keep up with the kid's grades," Clark says with a wry laugh.
"Do tell," Cathy says again, and somehow it's even frostier than before.
Clark is a little concerned.

Hello Ciule and welcome to Behind the Quill, thank-you for sitting down with us for a chat.
SS/HG readers might be familiar with your stories “Awkward” and “Headmaster’s Wife”.
Okay, let’s jump right in. What's the story behind your pen name? Well, I sort of took one of my real names, swirled the letters around in the air with my imaginary wand, and I ended up with this. Can’t begin to imagine where I got the idea from... ;-) Later on, I realized that Ciule is actually a name in Romania. I had no idea, but there are people out there carrying this name for real. I guess I’m #sorrynotsorry?   Which Harry Potter character do you identify with the most? To be quite frank: No one, really. This is more about the characters I like, than truly identifying with them. I can relate to parts of some of them, but not the whole package. Primarily, I write about Hermione, Voldemort and Severus, and the one common thread between those three is the search for knowledge. That’s a trait I can identify with, but I’m neither an evil bastard, a grumpy protector nor a fretting, intelligent activist. I am, however, a swot. If you had asked who I’d want to be, the answer is clear. I want to be Albus Dumbledore. Though I can’t agree with the things he did, I feel absolutely certain that he’s the one who has the most fun during the books. I want to have that twinkling fun in face of absolute chaos.   Do you have a favourite genre to read (not in fic, just in general)? Fantasy! Definitely fantasy. While growing up, I read ‘everything’ in every genre, and in my twenties, I decided I’d spend my time reading what I loved the most. So, fantasy it is. Do you have a favourite "classic" novel? You landed me in an existential crisis right there. I mean, there’s so many to choose from! ‘Wuthering Heights’, I think. It hurts so good. Or maybe ‘Rebecca’, at least, I loved that when I was younger. Or the fairly obscure ‘Lorna Doone.’ When I was a kid, I wanted to be a film director, shooting Lorna Doone into an epic film. Oh well, there might be a theme in this selection of books which reflects in my writing… At what age did you start writing? The creative process has gone on since forever. I’ve told myself thousands of stories in my head, but rarely written anything down. At the age of ten, I had a co-writing project with one of my friends. We created this secret room in her basement, and painstakingly wrote a ‘novel’. It was fun, though the writing ended as it became too cold down in the basement during winter. How did you get into writing fanfiction? In 2009, I became completely obsessed with a TV-show in the last episode. I was watching the entire series, casually enjoying the murder mystery, and in the last episode, the villain said: “I can do the math,” and I was literally gone. That obsession sparked writing my first fanfic stories. Those stories are still on FFnet, but they aren’t any good. *shrugs* What's the best theme you've ever come across in a fic? Is it a theme represented in your own works? Compromise. The world isn’t a perfect place, and will never be. You can, however, make it more to your liking. It may not be perfect, but if you play the cards you are dealt, you might improve something. In Robert Jordan’s “the Wheel of Time”-series, one of the characters goes through a test in a parallel universe of sorts, and she thinks: “The world was not what she wanted, not anywhere near it.” I loved that: trying your best to make things as you want them to be in the face of dangers and difficulties.   And then there’s time travel! I love messing with time, and there are so many great Time-travelling fics. Plus, I have to say I have a certain love for the villains...   What fandoms are you involved in other than Harry Potter? Currently, I’m not writing for any other fandoms. I read Star Wars, GoT, POTO and LOTR, and in the past I read Smallville. Though it’s more of a type of ship for me, because I only read Reylo, SanSan, Erik/ Christine, Lex/Lana and ….drum roll… the extremely small and quite oddball ship of Eowyn/ Grìma Wormtongue. If you’ve never tried the last one, go search for the fantastic stories by auri_mynonys. If you could make one change to canon, what would it be? Do you have a favourite piece of fanon? One change: duh, that’s easy, isn’t it? Severus lives. Or, maybe Dumbledore acting more rational, not keeping so many secrets. Maybe telling McGonagall that Severus is on the Order’s side… (Interviewer is laughing - ”NOT so easy”) I do write Voldemort wins AUs, but I wouldn’t want canon Voldemort to win. I prefer him to be more sane than in canon. My absolute favourite piece of fanon has to be the Black library. I thought it was canon, but it’s not. This is a thing that really, really should exist in canon! Do you listen to music when you write or do you prefer quiet? I’m very much inspired by music, and sometimes I listen as I write, but not always. Some fics are heavily inspired by music, such as ‘Absence’ and the last epilogue to ‘The Manipulation of Time and Matter’. What are your favourite fanfictions of all time? Definitely ‘Two Steps from Hell,’ by the amazing Ssserpensssotia, but that’s a Volmione. This was such a wild ride, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, holding my breath the entire time. Those twists and turns were so unpredictable and … Well, I’m in awe. The SS/HG fandom is so massive, there’s a plethora of great stories out there. The unfinished ‘Self-Slain Gods on Strange Altars’ is a wonderful story by scumblackentropy, and I love Slytherpoufs stories, especially the wip ‘Ghosts’, but also ‘Angels to Fly’. And then there’s the one that got away - it means, I can’t find it. In this story, Severus watches the thestrals, befriending one of them, I think, but they’re unpredictable and maybe even dangerous. He’s heartbroken, and knows how it all will go down, having bitterly accepted his role. It made me cry. And then there’s the works by Aurette, and lena1987, Subversa, Kittenshift… Are you a plotter or a pantser? How does that affect your writing process? I need (strike that: want) to draft the entire story before I post, to have some idea on how it goes. That makes it easier to write, but if it’s a long story, I’m happy as long as I know the general direction. This year, I finished a story that was on an unintended hiatus for two years, and I think part of my problem on getting back into writing it up was a too vague idea for the ending.   What is your writing genre of choice? Uh. I don’t know? Basically, you could argue that I’m a porn writer, or at least it’s fuelled by sexual tension and angst. So, romance or drama, bordering on erotica might be correct. To be frank, I haven’t really thought about categories after I started posting on AO3. Which of your stories are you most proud of? Why? Hard to say. I might go with “the Manipulation of Time and Matter,” because I think it’s the best plot I’ve created. Besides, I managed to write Hermione having a relationship with both Severus and Voldemort in the same fic. My favourite “clean” SSHG would be the short story ‘Grimmauld’. Did it unfold as you imagined it or did you find the unexpected cropped up as you wrote? What did you learn from writing it? In Grimmauld, the house became a character. That was unexpected, and not something I had planned from the beginning. So the lesson would be “don’t start posting until you know what’s going to happen.” Or else, this story might have turned out very much different. I had to throw in a little made-up lore on how you set blood wards on a house too to make it sentient. That proved to be a quite chilling piece of magic.   How personal is the story to you, and do you think that made it harder or easier to write? I love old houses. Exploring abandoned houses, going inside to see what remains of furniture, tapestries and everything is so exciting. (It can also be dangerous, but that’s another matter). Such houses makes me feel .. nostalgic, plus I get those nice little shivers down your spine that is a little like a horror story. So, I wanted to use Grimmauld as a setting to explore that in a fic, to really dig into the aching loneliness of a lost house. The story came very quickly to me, so I guess that helped me.   What books or authors have influenced you? How do you think that shows in your writing? Big question there. Hmm, I think … it’s hard to say. I’m a reader, really, and I couldn’t easily pick apart any influences. Though I have to say that one of the things I enjoyed when reading ‘Two Steps From Hell’ was the attention to magic. I think it’s important to include spells, rituals and the use of magic in my fics, because that’s what sets it apart from a Muggle AU, for example. That’s an important part of the world-building.   Do people in your everyday life know you write fanfiction? My significant other knows. I didn’t tell him, but he found out for himself, probably by spying on me. When he told me, I almost couldn’t stop laughing, because he… erm, he said he had thought about reenacting a scene in my PWP ‘Twenty Points to Gryffindor’, where Severus shouts the title as he… well… you get the gist. If he had done that, I’d have had a heart attack. I would literally be dead. Instead, I laughed non stop for an hour.   How true for you is the notion of "writing for yourself"? Haha, so true. You spend all those hours in front of your laptop - and if I wasn't motivated by doing it for myself, I can’t even see how I’d force myself through all those hours. It’s fun, though. I do this because I love it.   How important is it for you to interact with your audience? How do you engage with them? Just at the point of publishing? Through social media? Very important. I'm on the publishing sites (visible interaction is why I prefer AO3 instead of FFnet) and on Facebook, mainly. I love feedback (as all authors do), and when people form theories or make comments, I get an insight into my own writing. I know how it’s going to pan out, but the audience doesn’t, and how they perceive things might be different from how I think it is. At times, it influences how I go forward, mostly because I need to add things, to explain what’s going on. What is the best advice you've received about writing? Don’t post until you know the ending, and remember: the devil on your left shoulder will be at war with the angel on the right side. Listen to the angel telling you to wait a little longer, and not to the devil chanting: ‘Post, post, post!’ In the end, of course, you’ll give in to the devil, regretting it until you’re done. What do you do when you hit writer's block? Read. Read a lot. And read some more. Has anything in real life trickled down into your writing? Certainly. I’m a foodie. For example, everything that Voldemort eats is stuff I love. His food habits are primarily mine, and I love cooking.   Do you have any stories in the works? Can you give us a teaser? It’s a short piece, maybe three or four chapters, with the title ‘Transference’. The point of departure from canon is during their time in the tent at DH. Hermione wakes up in a bed, in a room she doesn’t recognize, having no idea where she is, but she spots a large, moving picture on the drawer:  Feeling panic rising, she stared hard at the moving and smiling pictures, and her heart leapt into her throat, pulse hammering as she recognized herself in the largest picture. A slightly older Hermione, in a white wedding dress, kissing and laughing at someone who simply had to be a much younger Severus Snape. It had to be him: Long black hair, hooked nose, sallow skin - but then he looked so young, carefree and happy - expressions she had never seen on her dour Professor's face. Beside the picture, there were numerous cards, greetings and well-wishings for their wedding - the date an impossible 21 August 1982, and amongst the cards, the largest one stood out, the black ink showing an elegant handwriting: “Dear Hermione and Severus! Best wishes for your wedding, Lord Voldemort.” Any words of encouragement to other writers? Read and write, in that order. Don’t worry about trolls, because when you contribute something that you created, it makes you so much more than people spending their time just raining on anyone’s parade. You brought something new to the world, they’re just reacting to things. If someone accuses you of a self-insert, go ahead and lecture them on the intentional fallacy. I promise, you won’t regret looking it up. ;-)   And please, mind the normal physical limits when you’re writing smut. Unless you give the male a stamina potion or put him under the Imperius, it’s unlikely that his refractory period allows him to come five times in one hour. Realistic smut is so much more sexy, lol. Thanks again for speaking with us Ciule.

DCU Bang 2019 FAQs
Tumblr media
Please make sure to read all the FAQs and check out the DCU Bang Rules before signing up or sending in a question!
What is the DCU Bang? A Big Bang/Mini-Bang is a writing challenge that prompts authors and artists to work together to create a story and work of art that go together. In this case, our fandom is the DC Universe, and our goal is 10,000/5,000 words!
Do I need a DreamWidth/LiveJournal/Tumblr/Twitter/Ao3 account? The only account that is required at this point is Archive of Our Own. The reason for this is that all stories will be posted to the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection, rather than being posted to the DreamWidth/LiveJournal communities, as in years past. After being posted to Ao3 and being approved for the collection, you’re free to post your story/art anywhere you wish!
What are check-ins? Check-ins are a way to see how you’re doing on your work! Some of them are mandatory and some of them are not, so it’s important to keep track of which ones are mandatory! They’re also a great way to keep yourself on track and a time to talk about your work and let others know how you’re doing. If an author does not respond to 2 mandatory check-ins, they will be considered dropped from the current Bang!
Do I need a beta reader? Starting for 2019, beta readers are no longer mandatory! However, you must edit your work for at least spelling and grammar and submitted stories found to have excessive spelling and grammar issues will be asked to edit, or be removed from the collection. Consequences for this will be handled on a case-by-case basis and can include being banned from participation in the next round. Beta readers are still strongly recommended to use. We suggest finding a beta sooner rather than later, and here is the 2018's DCU Bang Beta Reader Resources Post. If you want to have more than one person beta read your story, that's fine, too!
Can I drop out? Yes! Sometimes life gets in the way or a story just doesn’t happen, and we understand that! However, there is a cutoff point, and if you do not let the mods know before this date, you can be banned from the next round. Even if it is after this cutoff date that you need to drop out please let us know so that we can discuss options. We can’t help if we don’t know there is a problem! Dropping all contact with mods after the cutoff date is grounds for an automatic ban, as we can’t help at that point. Please get in contact with us, so that we can arrange for art if needed! Solo participants are free to drop out at any point, without consequence. Tandem artist/author groups can also drop out at any point together without consequences.
What can I do if I have problems with my author/artist? Contact the mods! Let us handle things as we understand that sometimes people just don’t get along. Abuse or rude behaviour toward any participant in the Bang will not be tolerated, especially for story/art content. (It’s important for artists to read all the warnings in a story summary, and for authors to list all warnings in their story summary!) Please just get in contact with us mods to resolve issues between participants, rather than disappearing. If an author or artist needs to drop out from the Bang, after artist claims have happened, there is a limited grace period to do so, please keep track of the schedule. If an artist needs to drop out, the author’s story(s) will go out for pinch hits, so that they still receive art.
What is the grace period? The grace period is one last chance to allow authors or artists to drop out of the Bang without consequences, after claims have been made. It is a very short period, from July 5th to July 20th so it is very important to communicate to the mods if you are needing to drop out during this time, for any reason! It is also possible to drop down to the solo track during the grace period as well, but this must be discussed with the mods as well.
When do I post my story? For 2019, October 1st-5th is the “due date”***. Rather than choosing a single day that all works are due, we will be giving everyone 5 days to get their works into the Ao3 collection before reveals happen. This allows more flexibility for authors and artists to check over their works on Ao3 before going live and being revealed. This also allows the mods to check over works to make sure they are complete. Do not submit works that are incomplete. If your work is not complete, it could be revealed before you are ready for it to be revealed and no one wants that! Authors are welcome to submit their works and do minor editing and polishing while they wait for their reveal date to come. Please contact the mods if you will not be able to post your story between October 1st-5th, so that we can help you decide if you can post during the amnesty period or not! ***Why the change from a long posting period? Frankly, it got to be a lot to handle and keep track of and after doing research and looking at many other Bang setups, this is fairly close to how they are run as well. It’s also more fair to participants to have a solid due date, rather than some participants getting nearly 2 extra months to work on their projects.
What is the reveal date? The reveal date will be whatever you choose on September 14th, this is not to be confused with the due date, which is October 1st-5th. The official reveal period will run between October 5th and October 20th. If you will not have your work completed and polished in this time, please do not post to the Ao3 collection, contact the mods instead to discuss things and set up for amnesty posting instead! We’re here to help and work with you, but we cannot help if you do not contact us!
What is the amnesty period? The amnesty period is a chance for participants that couldn't quite finish on time to have one last chance to post for the current Bang! If for any reason you cannot post on your chosen reveal date, please get in contact with the mods ASAP!
Where can I post my story? Anywhere you wish, so long as it is also in the DCU Bang Ao3 Collection. Posting it there is how we will count your work as completed***. ***Artists will not be required to post to Ao3, though it is highly encouraged. (Ao3 isn’t great for hosting some types of art, like picspam or gif sets, we understand that!) If you are not posting your art to Ao3, you must make sure the link to where you art is posted is provided to the author and linked within the author notes or story.
So, what's allowed here? The easy answer to that is: pretty much anything DC Comics! We're open to slash, het, and gen, no matter your pairing preference. If you want to write Clark/Lex or Jason/Tim, that's awesome, and if you've got a great idea for an epic Batman/Catwoman or M'gann/Conner, that's perfectly acceptable as well. You can base your story off of any medium or canon - so whether you’re a diehard Young Justice cartoon fan, into Smallville, or someone who loves the comics, you can participate! The only thing explicitly not allowed is pedophilia for the sake of pedophilia - if it's a plot point, it's okay, but we're not going to post stories that have sexual situations involving children (for our purposes, anyone under the age of 15). If you have a question about your pairing or specific idea, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post, send an email to [email protected], or send a PM, and I'll discuss it with you on a case-by-case basis.
What about crossovers, fusions, and AUs? The only requirement for this Bang is that the primary focus of your story be on at least one character from the DC Universe. If you want to write Batman in Ancient Rome or Superman as a new member of the Hawaii Five-0 task force, you are more than welcome to. However, if you want to write a crossover that focuses on Harry Potter being a new member of the Justice League, this is not the place for it. The focus must be on a DC character. Crossovers with other comics fandoms are allowed, but the focus has to be on the DC character.
Can I write original characters? If they are a minor character, yes! Even more important characters, such as Batman protecting an original female character, are acceptable, so long as it is from Batman’s POV and the story isn’t explicitly about this original female character. A work that features, for example, an original character journalist doing an in-depth piece on Superman is also allowed, as the work would focus on Superman, not the journalist. A work wherein your original character joins the Justice League, or exists within Gotham, or is the child of a DCU character would not be acceptable for this Bang. We want to keep the focus on DCU characters as much as possible! If you’re not sure if your idea for including original characters is within these rules, please contact us at [email protected], so we can discuss it on a case-by-case basis!
Can I submit a story I have already started? That depends! Stories and art have to be new for the DCU Bang. If you've written something that's 10k/5k already and posted it, awesome! However, this is a chance to create something new (or finish an unposted WIP), so if your story has been posted elsewhere in its entirety, it doesn't qualify for this challenge. If you have never posted the story anywhere, it qualifies for this Bang, even if you started writing it 10 years ago!
What if I've already posted part of a fic? Can I finish it for this challenge? The purpose of this Bang is to unveil a brand-new, completed piece on your posting date, however we are okay with you finishing your piece as long as you have not posted more than 2,000 words for the 10k Traditional Big Bang or 1,000 words for the 5k Mini-Bang and do not post any more until your posting date. Since this Bang has a minimum word count of 10,000/5,000 words we are asking that no more than 2,000/1,000 words be posted prior to signing up, so that at least 80% of the fic is new. Please note that the 2,000/1,000 word limit still holds no matter how long your finished fic is - even if you complete a 100k epic, you can only submit it for this Bang if you've published less than 2,000/1,000 words of it before signing up for this challenge!
What about a sequel or a prequel to an already posted fic? Prequels/sequels to stories you've written and posted are acceptable! If you write a prequel/sequel, be sure to link back to the original story, so people can read that as well. =D
Can I sign up with a co-author? You can work with a co-author or a group, if you're more comfortable. But remember, the word count will still be 10k no matter how many authors work on it. Just make sure to sign-up all authors on the sign-up sheet and have everyone join the comm. The limit of two stories per author still stands even if all the stories are co-written.
Can I sign up to write more than one story? Sure! You can sign-up to write up to two different stories for this challenge. If you do want to write two stories make sure to sign-up separately for both. If you have to drop one or both make sure to contact the mods before rough drafts are due so that you don't leave an artist hanging!!! If you have to drop either story after the final dropping date, you could be banned for the next round!
Can I sign up as an author AND an artist? If you want to, more power to you! That's awesome! If you wish to create art for your story only, you can sign up as a solo-author, and it will be entirely up to you to create art for your story! By signing up as an artist, you are offering to create art for someone else’s story during the claiming period, so if your intent is to create for your own story only, sign up as a solo-author! And again! Please do not take on more than you can handle!!! If, for at any reason, you do not believe you can continue, as an artist or an author, contact me ASAP!
What is the Traditional Author/Artist track? The traditional sign-up is the one that most Bang-type challenges follow. You sign up as an author, write your story and submit your rough draft/summary according the schedule. Your story will go up for blind artist claims. After that, the mods will match up the authors and artists via email. (It’s very important to sign up with an email that you check frequently!!!) Authors will send their story to their artist(s) and discuss and collaborate on what they would like to do!
What is the Solo Author/Artist Track? A solo author/artist is someone who wants the structure of a fanwork challenge without having to work with someone else to create an accompanying fanwork. By working alone, you don't have to worry about whether you complete your project or not because you won't have a partner depending on you. You can also decide to do your own art or find your own partner to work with. Basically, I won't be matching you with an artist or an author, but you can still have a fic with art if you arrange it yourself. You can also work on other kinds of projects like podfic if you desire. It will also be possible for solo-author/solo-artists to change their mind, should they feel capable of completing their works in time for posting! Please do not choose to switch from solo if you are not confident you can complete your story/art. If, after switching from solo and you are not able to complete your story/art and you have been paired with an artist/author, you will be banned from participating next year. We don’t want to leave anyone hanging!
What is the Tandem Author/Artist track? A tandem sign-up is when an author and artist choose to sign-up together. This way, the artist will be able to work with the author throughout the entire process and have more time to complete their art. If an author or artist want to work with each other, after one or both have already signed up, no problem! Just send me a message and I will get that updated! This is a great option for artists, and authors that want to have more time working together. The Discord server will have channels set up so that artists and authors wanting to work longer together can find a partner!
What counts as art? Lots of things! Traditional art, digital art, manips, banners, icons, wallpaper, gifs sets, picspam, vids, and fanmixes (with cover art) are all fine. If you want to check that what you have in mind is appropriate, leave a note in the Page-A-Mod post. We'll discuss it on a case-by-case basis.
What are the minimum requirements for art? Each story an artist claims is required to have at least one art of quality for each story they claim. If an artist decides to claim 3 stories, they will be required to create one piece of art for each story, so at minimum, 3 pieces of art. You’re creating something for a work that is at least 5k/10k in length, so we want the art to match that effort! Here are the suggested guidelines:
Traditional/Digital art: Cleaned lineart, on unlined paper, that is at least 500x500 pixels is the minimum. Additional sketchier/rougher pieces are welcomed so long as one piece of art is at the cleaned lineart stage! Manips: Clean renders and non-blurry images that do not contain watermarks should be used for photo manipulation. Examples of the quality expected for this Bang can be found right here on Fanlore. Banners or Icons or Wallpaper: 5 icons, of at least 100x100 pixels. 3 banners. 1 wallpaper. More is of course always welcomed! Picspam or Gifsets: At least 6 images, but more images, or multiple sets are welcome! Vids: At least two minutes long, or a full song! Fanmixes: At least 10 songs and include cover art (this can be a manip!).
I'm interested, but I'm not sure what to write. There is a channel in the DCU Bang Discord server, just for prompts! Anyone can leave a prompt, and anyone can take a prompt. If six authors choose to write from the same prompt, that's totally fine. If someone wants to mash three prompts together, that's also fine. If someone wants to use half of a prompt, that's fine. Sensing a trend yet? =D This also means, should you choose to leave a prompt, it is for anyone to use, in whichever way they want. If there is an idea that you want done in a very specific manner, it may not be the best for you to leave it for this Bang, as all authors are free to use prompts however they see fit.
I’ve been banned or think I have been banned, what can I do? Contact the mods! The quickest way is via email, [email protected], or by messaging LuciferxDamien on the DCU Bang Discord server. If you have been banned for not completing your story/art, we might be able to work something out, but be prepared to have something completed in return! To unban yourself, complete the story/art you had promised in the previous round and let the mod know via email or Discord. If you were banned for a reason other than not completing your story/art, please still contact us and we can discuss things further. We’re very willing to work with people!
Thank you for reading the DCU Bang FAQs! Make sure to check out the DCU Bang Rules and familiarize yourself with the DCU Bang 2019 Schedule. If you have any further questions, concerns, or need clarification on any rules, please do not hesitate to contact us, either through the Page-A-Mod Post, emailing [email protected], sending a PM on DreamWidth/LiveJournal to , or sending a DM on Discord to LuciferxDamien. Questions left on the DCU Bang Tumblr or DCU Bang Twitter may not be answered in a timely manner, as the mods are not logged into those accounts at all times so please use a different method of contact, especially if your matter is urgent!

Some assorted Smallville headcanons from some of my assorted WIPs for Plot Bunny. They did not specify which WIP they preferred, so I just picked a bunch of different ones and went from there!
Smallville does not approve of Clark Kent’s parenting style: Smallville is a tight-knit, proud little community where everyone looks out for each other that is full of people who want to continue living in a tight-knit, proud little community where everyone looks out for each other. The population at large still considers Clark one of their temporarily-displaced own and were therefore very willing to pretend to believe the “cousin” story when “Conner” showed up–right up until they found out it was NOT a story meant to help Clark’s displaced kid he’d just found out about settle into the Kent family in a low-pressure environment while he got over whatever obvious trauma had happened to him. Now? Now there are pitchforks being sharpened and torches being lit. CLARK JOSEPH KENT, YOUR HOMETOWN IS NOT MAD, JUST DISAPPOINTED.
Kara gets to Earth on time and the Kents get a two-for-one special on free kids: Smallville is pretty sure Jonathan and Martha did NOT get this emotionally-fraught teen mom and her weird but adorable little baby from any actual adoption agency, Norwegian or not, but what’s a little illegal immigration and identity fraud between neighbors? None of THEIR business, no sir. Especially not if any strangers ever show up in town asking QUESTIONS.
Jon and Martha, professional soulparents: Oh Jon and Martha absolutely will be clearing out the attic to make Conner a bedroom the absolute SECOND they get back to Smallville. And also being heartbroken about Clark, obviously. Everyone in Smallville is going to cry on them when they hear about Conner and be both very sad and very happy for them. And then they’re all gonna be Weird About Conner, who isn’t gonna know how to talk to ANY of them. He’s gonna get his cheek pinched by so, so many old ladies and SO many manly back-claps and it’s gonna be a pain controlling his TTK enough to actually let people do it. Meanwhile, everyone in Smallville, internally: oh he’s exactly as weird as Clark was when he first showed up, noted. Jfc, Jon and Martha, AGAIN?? WHERE DO YOU EVEN FIND THESE KIDS.
Kon is too trans for this pregnancy shit: No one in Smallville knew a thing about Kon’s physical sex, so they’re all gonna be VERY surprised very soon, but also Smallville in general is gonna take that whole reveal like CHAMPS and just roll with it, even if it might require some people having some Talks With Their Kids And/Or Slightly Bigoted Relatives. Like, there will be a few assholes and a few over-inquisitive weirdos around, because nowhere is a monolith, but overall Smallville is gonna roll with it and be chill about it while ALSO being incredibly out of touch with the up-to-date terminology/language and having very little grasp of the minutiae of queerness in general ( aside from a couple of very quiet people who are gonna feel a WAY about finding out that Conner Kent is trans and went completely unclocked all this time, and seeing how most of the town’s taking finding out really well, and does that maybe mean . . . ).
the one where Kon isn’t the father: Smallville has politely not asked any questions about Tim aside from if he wanted a baby shower or not, but also ALL of Smallville knows Tim was Conner’s “boyfriend” and Kyra is “his” daughter. That’s just gossip-by-osmosis that all of Smallville knows. A lot of casseroles and crocheted things and quilts have happened to the Kent household since Tim showed up pregnant and traumatized. And baby stuff donations. And babysitting offers. And general helpfulness in general. People weren’t necessarily close to Kon, but a lot of people felt very bad about what HAPPENED to Kon, especially after finding out about Kyra. Not that any of them actually KNOW what actually happened to Kon or the truth about Kyra, but that’s a clone of a different gene donor, okay?? OKAY.

Ask game: hunch or shrug
"Look, seriously, we all get it," she says. "We just want you to know no one's gonna think anything bad because of you. Clark's great. Nobody's gonna judge. Nobody who matters, anyway. It'd be fine if you told the truth."
"You think I'm Clark's kid from, like, a teen pregnancy situation," Kon says slowly, really hoping he's misunderstanding her right now. "And you think I'm ashamed to admit it."
"It's a small town, Conner," she says gently. "Everybody knows everybody else's business. Clark's adopted. He doesn't have any biological cousins. And the resemblance is kinda, well . . . not subtle, you know?"
Kon . . . swallows.
"It's okay," she insists. "Really."
"Does everybody think I'm his kid?" Kon asks, staring down at his half-eaten sandwich and wishing he could sink right into the floor and never come back out. The others all glance at each other, then shrug.
"I mean, everybody at school, at least," she says. "Honestly my parents told me not to bring it up to you, but I thought that was kind of . . . shitty, you know? Like, if you feel bad about it, I mean. You shouldn’t feel bad about something like that."
Kon wants to burn down this whole fucking building and run away to San Francisco and stay there until he dies.
"Clark's not my dad," he says.
"It really is okay," she says. Kon wants to laugh.
Or cry.
"You think I'd be the ashamed one, if he were?" he asks maybe a little bit too close to bitterly, and everyone else at the table . . . pauses, all at once.
"Wait," she says. "What?"
"Clark's not my dad," Kon repeats, and then grabs his tray and gets up and just–leaves.
He really can't do anything else.

Father of mine by everclear for smallville disapproves!
"I didn't think your dad was around when you were born," she says still more carefully.
"Uh," Kon says, fumbling for an appropriate lie. Just–something true enough to pass, Tim would tell him. "He was kinda . . . in and out of my life, I guess."
Did he say his imaginary dad wasn't around at some point? He must've, but fuck if he remembers when or why.
God, he's so bad at this.

Smallville does not approve makes me think a little bit of "Say it ain't so," by Weezer because Kon thinks Clark is the one that would be ashamed to be his dad it makes me think of "my love is a life taker" and, because Clark basically ignores Kon, the "Dear daddy, I write you, In spite of years of silence," sorta applies too
"Oh, uh, I think my dad named me," Kon says, which isn't any kind of true, obviously, but almost isn't a lie. Kind of. And it's not like he can tell them Clark named him, now is it? "Like, after a cousin he had, I guess?"
He wishes he could tell them about the real Kon-El. It'd meant so much to him, hearing about him himself. Hell, just the fact that Superman had even wanted to offer him a name to begin with, that he'd given the idea any consideration at all–and then the fact that he'd picked a name from his own family for it?
Yeah. That'd meant so, so damn much.
Even if it'd maybe gotten his hopes up a little too much too.
That'd been his own fault anyway.

Also - “This Town” by Kacey Musgraves for the Smallville disapproves of Clark’s choices AU
"Your dad named you?" she asks carefully, and Kon realizes he's suddenly and inexplicably the center of attention.
"Uh, yeah," Kon says, not sure why everybody's looking at him so weird right now. Fuck, did he say something freaky again? He tries to figure it out, but he has no idea what it could've been. People name their kids after random family members all the time, don't they? Like, that's a normal thing that people do, yeah?
Not that Clark is actually his dad or was actually naming his kid when he named him, but nobody here knows that.

hard
Kon doesn't like anything about Smallville, but he's trying really hard to be Conner Kent.
He's just . . . really bad at being Conner Kent, is the problem.
