tell me more about classic filk i know a few songs but never got deep into it

Heck YEAH

"Filk" is music (often but not always folk music-style, often but not always song parodies to the tune of famous pre-existing songs) about sci-fi, fantasy, and other fannish topics. Filk circles are popular events at science fiction conventions, and that's really where the genre started. The word "filk" actually arose from a typo in a convention program once, and people just rolled with it ever since!

Some of the most iconic albums in the filk world are the anthology albums "Minus Ten And Counting" (songs about space exploration and the real-life space program), "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" (songs about sci-fi space shenanigans and space ghosts), and "Finity's End: Songs of the Station Trade" (songs set in the world of CJ Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels, and my personal favorite. I've never read any of CJ Cherryh's books, but these songs paint such a vivid world.) "Space Heroes and Other Fools" is another big one, it's more hit-or-miss for me but it's iconic. Other really good and foundational ones are "Divine Intervention" by Julia Ecklar, "Avalon is Risen" by Leslie Fish, and "We Are Who We Are" by Vixy & Tony.

I lean more towards sci-fi and space than fantasy, but fantasy and paganism are huuuugely popular filk topics too.

Some of the most popular names to look into include Leslie Fish (intensely prolific, barely a fraction of her work is on any streaming or music service), Julia Ecklar (famous for her "ose," the filk-world word for sad songs - because they're "ose, more-ose, and even more-ose), Juanita Coulson, Kristoph Klover, Vic Tyler (who just recently died :( rest in peace), Duane Elms, Kathy Mar, Bob Kanefsky, Alexander James (trans, with lots of filk under his previous name as well), Vixy & Tony, and Seanan McGuire. (I like Seanan McGuire's filk music better than her books, hah.) Some other great ones include Cat Faber (most acapella), Astrisoni, The PDX Broadsides, Kari Maaren, and Sassafrass (also mostly acapella. Includes Ada Palmer). Heather Dale, Tom Lehrer, and Jonathan Coulton are kind of honorary filkers too haha.

The best place to get the ones from 80s and 90s cassettes are on the Internet Archive or Youtube; a few filkers who are more currently active have their stuff on Bandcamp.

Review: Kampfar – Til klovers takt (Indie)

My review of Kampfar's newest album, Til klovers takt, written for Heavy Music HQ:

Ever since Norwegian black metal veterans Kampfar re-formed their musical anatomy in 2011 with their acclaimed album Mare, it’s as if they’ve reinvented themselves. This path gradually expanded and developed during the last decade until it became the high point of the band’s music. Til klovers takt, Kampfar’s latest full length, once again depicts their mastery in creating a passionate and artistic work.

Til klovers takt is a continuation of the glorious and storytelling path that Kampfar have established over the past decade. Black metal is not only the medium to convey the concept of black metal and the pagan messages, but is a vessel to connect the listener to the endless world of Norse folk history and mythology, by carefully crafted illustration of its tales. This is made possible by brilliant and dynamic songwriting and equally impressive performances by the band members. It seems Kampfar won’t go astray, as Til klovers takt proves.

Clea could be invested in the state of her nail beds all she wanted, but it wasn’t going to change where she was, here and now. Here, being on this couch, in front of a marriage therapist, with Tristan a scant foot away from her, on the opposite side. The car ride there had been quiet, but heavy, like a storm brewing, an indication of what might occur in this, their first session. As she’d been doing for so long now she couldn’t remember what it was like before she would worry at the smooth gold and bumpy opal of her wedding and engagement ring, and keep all her panic down. 

She was terrified, after all.

Terrified, that the therapist would say that she was the reason that she and Tristan’s marriage was failing. Terrified, that her parents had been right all those years ago, despite the cord that still pulled tight and thick between them even when on opposite sides of the house. Even, Clea’d thought, when he was overseas and the days had stretched too long since she’d heard from him, when she buried her face in one of his flannels and cried for the fear of losing him, whether it was physically or emotionally or in all the ways that counted.

So Clea was here. Here, ignoring, as she always did, the handsome cut of her husbands face. The parts of him that she knew as well as her own, the cords in strong wrists and cut of a strong jaw and the way that the words from his mouth either burned her from the inside out or cut at the ties between them. 

In front of them, their therapist Olivia cleared her throat, tapping her pen against her notebook. “We’re not going to get anywhere if neither of you will say anything, you know.”

Why I chose my URL: This isn’t the blog, but I had to make a blog for a high school english class to critique a classic novel and the guidelines on the blog title included that the title needed to be blindingly brilliant, and so mine was so brilliant it Burns, but then also it was around the time that Cloverfield the movie came out, and while I’m not a big fan of the movie itself, I think I’ve only seen it once, I was using Klover as a nickname at the time, and still do, so Burnt-Kloverfield came naturally from that.

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, even though it’s really niche: a detailed compilation of every reference to something outside the featured fandom in my fics. Yes, this is gonna be a long one.

The Engines Screaming Murder And Her Face Set In A Grin:

It didn’t even really look like a ship; every surface was studded with gun turrets, missile batteries, and armoured hangar bays, all piled on top of each other ahead of a massive jump drive. The whole thing was painted dull red and steel grey, marked with the emblem of the Hegemony of Man; a dreadnought, she realised, feeling her fluids run cold.

The HM Absolution (and the entire Hegemony of Man) is lifted directly from the game Enter the Gungeon, where it serves as the final boss of the Pilot’s run. A significant chunk of the Absolution’s dialogue in the fic is directly based on its in-game lines. I needed an evil human space government, and I feel like Among Us is weird enough that it could concievably take place in the same world as Enter the Gungeon.

“Operating for the Magnusson Interstellar Research Association; authorisation Arx, Ferrum, Nine, Five; inbound from Polus with ten crew.”

MIRA’s full name is derived from the Half-Life 2 character Arne Magnusson; it seemed appropriate considering how badly MIRA’s operations are run. The authorisation code Black repeats is actually from Fallout 4 - it’s the radio authorisation code used by Reconnaisance Squad Gladius when they try and request assistance, using the Brotherhood of Steel phonetic alphabet.

“This is Scribe Haylen of Reconnaissance Squad Gladius to any unit in transmission range. Authorization Arx. Ferrum. Nine. Five. Our unit has sustained casualties and we're running low on supplies. We're requesting support or evac from our position at Cambridge Police Station. Automated message repeating...”

Flight assist off, radio silenced, throttle wide open, aft shields up, jump drive spooling.

Flight Assist is a feature in Elite: Dangerous that makes ships easier to pilot by simulating friction (making ships slow down when they aren’t being powered, rather than drift). Turning it off makes a ship more manouvreable, but harder to control; it’s often disabled in combat as a result.

Space Is Wide And Good Friends Are Too Few:

Kristoph, my old first officer, called out.

I turned back to the power controls, throwing out an order for Heather to get down and help, and shoved the main lever home.

I waited until Kristoph and Duane came back from the bar with the first round of drinks.

The other members of the Meachum crew are all named after noted filk musicians, specifically Kristoph Klover, Heather Dale, and Duane Elms.

We Deserve To Thrive:

“Something called ‘Old Jeb’s Revenge’.”

A glance at the forgotten TV showed it halfway through a movie; as Stan watched an actor in cowboy clothes pulled a gun out of some strange machine and started firing at people in unconvincing zombie costumes.

The movie they’re watching is actually based on the backstory of the Pack-A-Punch machine in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies. I’ve never played any of the Black Ops games, but the machine has a very catchy theme song that I was listening to when I wrote this oneshot.

There’s A Fire Outside Your Door:

The power station is a monument to Hades’ will. A resolute brick building in the city’s industrial heart, surrounded by narrow, grimy streets and wreathed in smoke from a single massive chimney, clad in stone.

This is an actual building: it’s based on Bankside ‘B’ Power Station in London, better known today as the Tate Modern. I felt that the design was suitably 1930s, but also fittingly imposing.

A song rings out over the masses; it’s not beautiful or elegant like the one Orpheus sang, or sweet and sultry like Persephone’s. It’s raw and angry, dozens of voices taunting and cursing Hades’ name in unison to the tune of some old work ballad. A patchwork of instruments provide the tune, and dozens of feet stamp along.

This is actually a real song; the workers are meant to be singing a Hadestown-themed version of The Girl They Call Fitzroy from Bioshock Infinite.

“Everything I’ve built, destroyed; the foundry, the power grid, the Wall. Tell me, Songbird; under what righteous pretence have you justified this atrocity?”

This is another Fallout 4 reference; it’s almost word-for-word what Father says to the player character during their final confrontation in any ending where the Institute is destroyed.

“It's not enough that I lay here, dying... Now you plan on what, destroying everything? Tell me, then. Under what righteous pretense have you justified this atrocity?”

Heart Like An Axle:

“When I was really small my dad used to say it was to keep the trolls out. He said there was a bell in one of the towers, and when it rang they all ran away.”

“Trolls don’t come this far south,” Aisling replied matter-of-factly, ���Not anymore. But they do hate bells.”

This is a reference to the trolls in Hilda; they have a hatred of bells, and the city of Trolberg has multiple belltowers along its outer wall to keep them away.

Memories Stirred:

Yūko and Akio sat a few seats away, beside a mixed family where the mother was a plump European woman and the father was a square-jawed Japanese man. They had two kids; a young daughter and an infant, who was currently asleep on the mother’s lap.

The family sitting beside Yūko and Akio are based on the family Kiki stays with in the movie version of Kiki’s Delivery Service; Yūko mistaking Kiki for their daughter. I'm not sure if Fukuo is actually meant to be Japanese (the city he lives in is based on Stockholm) but I needed an excuse for them to be here so I ran with it.

She started to play, the strings humming a mournful note beneath the bow. The song was slow, the tune rising and falling gracefully along. The girl seemed to lose herself in the music; the jitter was gone from her movement, and her expression was one of quiet concentration. Tears began to flow as she played, glittering for a moment in the stage’s lights as they ran down her cheeks. Still she played on, and Yūko felt herself begin to well up a little at the performance.

This is a real song, though as it’s an instrumental the fic can’t give much detail; the entire performance is based on the Leshan Buddha scene from Abominable.

The Night Visit:

Hello, Dispatch? This is Detective King. I have a Section 47 in-progress at the Blyndeff Toy Emporium on Sussex Road;

“Section 47″ is a UK Social Services code, specifically referring to a child welfare investigation in cases where a child is believed “likely to suffer significant harm” - in hindsight, I didn’t really use it correctly here. Sussex Road is one of the major streets in Beach City in Steven Universe.

Hideaway:

“Once upon a time, there was a poor bamboo cutter…”

“So she just goes off back to the moon?” June was saying, her voice somewhere between amused and annoyed.

“Yes,” Haku replied. “I’ll admit, it isn’t the most satisfying ending, but it’s likely that’s what actually happened.”

“But it sucks,” she countered. “She shouldn’t have to leave her family like that, moon or not.”

Haku is telling June The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a 10th century Japanese story (though, as a spirit, he assumes the story is true); June’s reaction is based on my own after seeing the Studio Ghibli version.

Vatter’s Anbaric Growth is named after Varian from Tangled the Series (Vatter being a common fanon surname) - it’s the amber-creating potion he creates in a failed attempt to get rid of the black rocks overrunning Old Corona. Morton’s Fifth is from a Howl’s Moving Castle fic I read called Transformations.

I Can Hope How This Will End:

Nearest port to here’s an old whaling town called Smeerensburg, if I remember.

Smeerensburg is the setting of the movie Klaus. It is named after a real whaling town that was actually on Svalbard, though the real town was abandoned in 1657 and Klaus takes place somewhere in the early 1800s.

Hand In Hand:

“I think we should investigate the Lántakendur next,” she said, glancing between him and the page. “What do you think?” He didn’t reply. She turned the page. “Ooh! What about this?” She turned the book so he could see the illustration: a diminutive humanoid with paws and a large hat. “The Snusmumriken?”

Lántakendur is Icelandic for “borrowers”, referring to the creatures from Mary Norton’s novel series of the same name. Snusmumriken is the original Swedish name for Snufkin, from the Moomins franchise.

An illustration of a man in old clothes, smoke rising off his body, greeted her; beneath, the book labelled the creature as a ‘leerie’. Intrigued, she read on; apparently these things were urban spirits that went around lighting lamps and guiding lost travellers.

‘Leerie’ just means ‘lamplighter’ - this is technically a reference to their appearance in Mary Poppins Returns, where I couldn’t help headcanoning them as supernatural in some way.

Halcyon Days:

Halcyon was about as backwater as planets come, Maya decided. It wasn’t too far from Pandora, but while that blasted rock had every corporation and adventurer in the galaxy lined up for its riches, the only group with any interest in Halcyon was the Holloway corporation. They’d built a single colony, a city of maybe twenty thousand named Edgewater, and that was pretty much the only civilisation on the cold and rainy surface.

Halcyon is based on the planet Terra 2, in the Halcyon system, from The Outer Worlds; Edgewater is almost directly lifted from the game, though the version in the fic is much larger. It also has a small graveyard, which inspired the final scene of the fic

The Cruel Wars:

“Medic Everdeen, Medical Corps 155.”

Prim’s squad number is taken from a locomotive in Red Dead Redemption 2 - the Central Union Railroad No. 155. I chose this because in the original canon, Katniss’ squad number is 451 (in reference to Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451), which is also the number of a locomotive in the same game - the Southern & Eastern No. 451.

First Night Jitters:

I’m pretty sure I scared Jess off the time I tried to explain how a Holtzman drive works.

The Holtzman Drive is the name of the FTL technology used in Frank Herbert’s Dune novels - they work by folding space around a ship, allowing it to cover much greater distances.

jacob had a pretty nice childhood. both of his parents were doctors and they lived rather comfortably.

he is the oldest of four and he takes his role as a big brother very seriously. he'd do anything for his siblings.

never expected to become a doctor, he wanted to become a professional tennis player and he almost did.

he picked up a racquet for the first time when he was four and since that day he fell in love with the sport. by the age of fourteen, he moved to florida to attend a prestigious tennis academy and soon enough he became one of the best junior players in the world.

he made his professional debut when he was sixteen and two years later he was the 15th best player in the world.

in 2000, jacob was about to play the biggest match of his life, the semifinals of the us open. that was the day it all started. he simply couldn't do it. that was the first time he suffered an anxiety attack and from that day on it all went downhill.

he announced his retirement a year later. at 19, he had been through so much and he was in a bad place without a plan.

his parents encouraged him to continue his education and so he did. it was hard because he struggled with his disorder throughout college but he managed to graduate with a degree in biology.

to his parents' surprise, jacob decided to attend med school. he wanted to become a psychiatrist and help those who had been through the same.

turns out that medicine was the right choice. his mental health improved a lot during his time there and that's how he knew he'd chosen the right path.

after completing his residency, he moved back to klover. he still plays tennis because his love for the sport is too strong but now he no longer misses playing professionally.

This team is from the planet Neuros and were empowered with the power of the atom during a science experiment gone wrong. One of the scientists went mad with his newfound power and dubbed himself Moli Kuul and began creating monsters known as the Experions to use to conquer the planet. Only the Atomic Burst rangers can stop him.

Red Atomic Ranger- Jecht Age: 30 Personality/Bio: A dedicated teacher and lover of Science, Jecht is Korinda’s cousin, giving him and his students access to the experiment. Jecht is seen as the fun teacher engaging to his class and helpful out of the classroom. While he doesn’t blame his cousin for what happened he agrees with her that Moli Kuul must be stopped. He cares deeply for the team and gladly follows Korinda into battle. The accident gave him the ability to absorb energy. He is armed with the Atomic Blade, a sword that can cut to the very atom. Blue Atomic Ranger- Aristo Age: 18 Personality/Bio: A bit of a troubled student, Aristo was told to attend the field trip or risk repeating the year. He obviously chose the field trip. Aristo feels restless and doesn’t take orders well, often wanting to do his own thing with the powers early on. But soon learns to work with the team than for personal gain. The accident gave him a healing factor that works on himself and on others. He is armed with the Atomic Knuckles, a pair of gloves that hit with atomic force. Face Claim: Phillip Wampler

Yellow Atomic Ranger- Korinda Age: 30 Personality/Bio: Korinda was the head scientist on the experiment that gave the team their powers. When she first noticed the signs of something going wrong with the experiment she warned the small group present and had her lab assistant, Klover get everyone to safety. However, the accident happened so quickly that the group were caught up in it. She feels guilty about the experiment going awry though she manages to hide most of the guilt behind a smile. Because of her familiarity with the science behind the accident she was named leader of the newly formed Atomic Burst Rangers. She received the Yellow Ranger powers and pilots the Speeder Zord in combat. One little known fact about her that not even her team knows, is that she’s a big racing fan, as evidenced by her Zord. The accident gave her telekinetic abilities. She is armed with the Atomic Bow, a bow and arrow that she can shoot at amazing speed. Face Claim: Gabrielle Union

Green Atomic Ranger- Nindala Age: 18 Personality/Bio: Nindala is one of Jecht’s students who were present during the experiment. Along with Aristo they received their powers from this experiment, with her receiving the Green Ranger powers. Even though she knows Korinda was the scientist behind the experiment, she doesn’t blame her for the accident that brought them all together as Rangers, and as eventual friends. In battle, she pilots the Blaster Zord. Because of her Zord, her specialty among the team is marksmanship and she takes pride in practicing every day. The accident gave her telepathic abilities. She is armed with the Atomic Discs, small discs she shoots out of a wrist mounted device with incredible accuracy. Face Claim: Natasha Ivkovic

Pink Atomic Ranger- Klover Age: 25 Personality/Bio: Klover is Korinda’s lab assistant during their project. She views Korinda as her older sister and best friend, and thus doesn’t blame her for anything related to the accident. She knows Korinda tried her best to get everyone to safety, including her, and wouldn’t trade her newfound powers for the world. She enjoys using her new powers to save people and she enjoys being the Pink Ranger. She commands the Scanner Zord in battle and is in charge of any and all communications. She has a communication network set up to get alerts of monster activity quickly. The accident gave her the ability to absorb and redirect kinetic energy. She is armed with the Atomic Shield, a shield that can absorb hits and redirect the impact. Marcus let her have most of the run of it, her still dragging him along to a few furniture places just for the fun of it after they’d bought the home, but the moment the two of them had stepped foot in the house with the realtor they’d known that it was the one. That feeling had never faded, and didn’t now as the dark haired woman tossed her keys in the bowl next to the garage door, her Coach purse laid on the bar.

bold, assertive, a leader. Words never used to describe Kyra, but consistently used to describe her mother. Mrs. Crawford was a woman who was skilled at making room for herself in various circles, a skill she had learned from her own mother and somehow failed to pass down to Kyra. Where her mother would be more adamant about making her voice heard, Kyra would stay silent until there was an opportunity to speak up. If she could even beat herself up enough to actually say speak her mind.

Always interested in how the world works, a science and book nerd (which she now admits she was) her only goal was to end up in a career where she felt like she’d learn more about the world and how it works.

College was all about trying to get out of her comfort zone, trying to be more like her mother, trying to make friends, just being different. About 6 months in, she realized that wasn’t realistic. Well all of it wasn’t realistic. She did learn to put down her books and computer more and actually step out of her place.

A minor in public health, a bachelor of science in biology, Kyra was ready to burst into the job field. Not really but she was somewhat prepared with a job lined up. Then shit hit the fan. In the span of a few months, she lost an aunt, a friend, and her mom had a health scare.

The job she was offered had been in a different city and with less faith in the world, she turned it down, moved back home and started waiting tables. Though her parents continuously advised against it, her father was more than able to take care of his wife.

Kyra eventually moved out 3 years later, finding a somewhat decent job still in Oklahoma but further away from home, getting her own apartment.

Volunteering in a hospital by her apartment had once again triggered her interest in science, specifically health care but with a biology degree there wasn’t much she could do without starting school again and she had no idea exactly what she wanted to do. The only company willing to hire her was a small business in Denver. Reluctantly she moved to Klover.

Kyra’s been in Klover for about 3 years, recently she’s decided to pursue the career of being a physician’s assistant, so Ky has returned back to school full time. She’s in the summer of her first year and as a tutor.
