RECONNECTING WITH AN OLD FRIEND AND A DEEPENING FRIENDSHIP
A few months ago, my friend and former college Spanish professor contacted me. Our reconnection began with sitting at her kitchen table and enjoying coffee together while conversing about life and our shared interests.
When we first met, about 20 years ago, my friend was then truly a friend. Yet, we did not know each other very much on a personal level.
Over the last several weeks, this has changed; while sitting at her kitchen table listening to her, sharing tears, laughter, and some common experiences, I felt something in my heart...
Mi corazon se animaba y yo me senti adentro de mi mas que un conociemiento de una mujer y una profesora estimada, pero una amistad con una persona que amo verdadamente!
One time, I was in Francesca's kitchen and I was listening to her sing a song that just came to her mind while she cleaned her kitchen.
Right away, I recognized something familiar from my past:
Grand-Mère always had music playing as she was busy with just about anything at home. She would talk about music, her love of it. Grand-Mère and I truly shared a love of music. (To this day, music from many decades, especially the 40s and 50s, makes me feel the presence of my late grandmother.)
And so it is with Francesca! She shares with me songs from her generation and her earlier life that she loves. I am so happy to learn new songs and to listen to music in my other languages.
We attend functions and go about town together. Meanwhile we always learn more about each other.
Francesca introduced me to a green tea, Yierba Mate [YAIR-BAH MAH-TAY], popular throughout Latinoamerica. It's wonderfully bitter (amargo) and is a source of strong caffeine, hence the nickname "Morning Thunder tea" according to my friend B.
What are some of your most special friendships and relationships? What music/songs do you associate with loved ones?
I speak French with near native fluency. I am proficient in Spanish; I make the least mistakes in Spanish when I write as I do not have a solid foundation in spoken Spanish. However, my working vocabulary is decent and I have good aural comprehension. My spoken Italian is on par with my Spanish. My Italian vocabulary is, if not less than, equal to my vocabulary in Spanish.
What languages do you speak? I am particularly interested in Irish and Gàidhlig.
