Dance of the Phœnix - Episode 22

Hello hello! There was a big icing rain storm where I live last week and I got cut off from civilisation for far too long, which made me a little late on my posting schedule for this blog. As I am a little more busy than when I started blogging again, it might take a little more time to get exactly back on track and have a few posts made ahead of time, but I am working on it. Anyways, at least nobody are really expecting those posts, so it’s not like it matters that much.

We left Feng Wu and Jun Linyuan inside a cave, with a crazy and lost Wu Youdao trying to destroy all of the Junwu Academy in revenge for his lost lover I guess. Quite the unnecessary scenario in my opinion, but why should we say no to more drama?

So the door opened and Jun Linyuan pulls back Feng Wu that was trying to get on. He wanted to make sure everything was safe. Meanwhile, Wou Youdao is still desperately fighting the elder. He can’t win so he takes a pill that is going to triple his spiritual energy, but the downside is that once the effects are gone, basically, he dies. It also has the nice effect of making him go bersek. Yu Mingye is ordered by his father to not intervene. Xuan Yi comes right in time with Feng Xun to save his grandfather and everybody join forces to try and stop Wu Youdao.

Meanwhile, Feng Wu and Jun Linyuan are still going down some stairs in the secret passage way they found together. They end up in some sort of a cave that used to be occupied by a lady and they discover through a letter that was left that it was were Yunniang lived after the fire and the reason they never found her corpse, because she didn’t die in the first place. Nut now she left for some time as it’s all dusty. The letter is addressed to Wu Youdao.

Yu Mingye decides to jump in against his father’s order because Feng Wu would be sad if things keep going on. Everyone else is badly injured. Old Ba is coming over. Feng Wu and Jun Linyuan joins everyone as Wu Youdao is strangling powerfully Yu Mingye. Feng Wu shows him the letter, giving enough time to Yu Mingye to break free from Wu Youdao’s grasp. Even though it’s dangerous, Feng Wu rushes in to hand the letter, not being killed thanks to Jun Linyuan protecting her. She ends ups using spiritual energy to send the content of the letter to Wu Youdao’s mind. Yunniang asks him to forget about his revenge which makes him go back to normal. Before dying, he reveals to Feng Wu where is the thing that she’s looking for, but of course, it’s not for us to know. Yet. Really bad acting from Yang Chaoyue, I can’t really believe she’s that sad about Wu Youdao dying. Especially since he almost just killed like... everyone. Old Ba comes in and says it’s too and that she should respect his desire and let him go peacefully. The acting does get better when she’s not crying loudly anymore.

Feng Wu tells Jun Linyuan that she’s not Feng Wu and that she will probably have to go back where she’s from someday. Jun Linyuan says he guessed that much. He tried to convince himself that she changed because of the accident, but he knew within himself. He’s happy that she told him. He says that he also fell in love with her, ever since they met in the frosty forest. Extremely long streak of flashback. What a waste of time. And of course, Zuo Qingluan was lurking around and must have heard everything.

Old Ba gives medicine to the Emperor and the Empress invites him to stay over in the capital to teach at the Academy. He declines and suggest that if the emperor needs any treatment to ask Feng Wu, since he thought her some medicine. The emperor is quite pleased with Feng Wu and tells Old Ba to bring her along some other time.

Zuo Qingluan tries to tell Zhao Ge that Feng Wu isn’t herself, but she doesn’t believe her. Of course, that makes Zuo Qingluan hate Feng Wu even more. She reports back what she heard to the empress and she orders her to kill Feng Wu, because she’s impeding her grand plans. Then she introduces Qingluan to the Dark night court lord, so she can increase her power and absorb the phœnix blood.

Feng Wu retrieves the second star piece and a scroll on cultivation left by Wu Youdao. Now she only has one left piece to find and her phœnix blood. But they should still be on high alert, because they don’t think it was that simple about the emperor’s illness.

Seems like Qingluan accepted to receive more power through learning the ways of the Dark night court.

Once Feng Wu goes to the Academy, she talks with Huang Li. She says she really did see her, because she called her name and that person answered. But they never showed their face. So someone they pretended to be Feng Wu. I can’t really imagine Zuo Qingluan do something like that... unless the empress ordered her to do so? I don’t know, it seems quite strange to me.

Another very long episode where we don’t learn much more, one step closer to the ending. I don’t really get why they brought back Old Ba into the story, his input was very minor. Zuo Qingluan is probably with Yu Mingye the two most interesting characters in this story. I really dislike her, because the story antagonize her against Feng Wu the main lead, however I think she has much more depth. She’s the kind of villain that deserves a redemption arc in my opinion, but I guess there won’t be much time for that at this. See you soon for the next episode.

An we have reached the final sprint about this series! 10 episodes left, can you believe it? I was about to start on another series, but at some point... I really should finish this one first. Even though the one I was contemplating is only eight 15 minutes-ish episodes. I really need to clear my on hold list of dramas. Because it’s awfully too long. Anyways, last time, we discovered, to no surprise, that the empress is trying to get rid of the emperor and now she’s sending her minions to investigate at the academy so she could frame someone. I would suggest Feng Wu because she’s the main lead, but maybe she’ll try to help her friend from the Dark court and take away Wu Youdao. For now, those two are the most sensible choice in my opinion, but we’ll see soon enough.

As everyone is gathering from the empress’s orders, Feng Wu is tired of waiting for Jun Linyuan so she decides to go to the library. She notices Wu Youdao is still there, so she decides to pay him a visit. However, when she comes in, he’s bleeding to death, it seems he was stabbed in the heart. Yu Mingye’s doing? Or someone else? As of now, there are no indication about the culprit. She calls for help and she’s taken away by Gao Wei (the empress’s favorite minion) and his men. I think he might be dead hmm. I mean, Wu Youdao. Oh wow. I made a mistake. That was mister Ning, not Wu Youdao. So that’s the one that was looking for clues on the poison tampering with the emperor’s health. It makes sense, he was going to look through some books to investigate. Haha, I am ashamed of not making the difference, but old men all look the same to me and I am very bad with faces. They use one of the Biluo disciples to frame Feng Wu. How boring.

So Qingluan went to the library and the director was already dead. The empress orders her to look after Jun Linyuan so he won’t do anything to destroy their plans. Jun Linyuan says it’s impossible that Feng Wu could be the culprit, because she’s nowhere near strong enough to fight against the director. But again, his hands are tied. To be honest, I think it sucks to be Jun Linyuan, because he appears all powerful, but there’s nothing he can do. Like, never. Plus the empress ordered that he can’t go out. Like I said, there’s no perks being in this guy’s shoes.

As soon as Yu Mingye hears about Feng Wu’s whereabouts, he goes to save her. However, Feng Wu doesn’t want to leave even though they can’t prove her innocence. She says that it wouldn’t be good for her and that it would even drag down together with her all the ones she cares about. So she gives her hair ribbons to Yu Mingye so he would find a solution together with Jun Linyuan since the two of them teaming up together is her only chance.

Yu Mingye gets caught trying to reach Jun Linyuan at the palace. Gao Wei tries to stop him, but Jun Linyuan says that he’s his friend. That face he made when he heard that was pretty priceless. I actually do hope that they really become friends, like a pacemaker friendship maybe. I mean if Yu Mingye wasn’t from the Dark Night Court, they probably would have been. There’s still the rivalry for Feng Wu’s heart, for sure, but still. I like the two of them as friends rather than as sworn enemies. Gao Wei still tries to interfere and drag Yu Mingye away, but the emperor just coincidentally and conveniently wakes up at that moment and he is actually rather pleased that his son made a new friend aside from Xuan Yi and Feng Xun, even though it’s from the Dark Night Court. He lets Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye go, since he’s all good now, no need to worry. Gao Wei wants to oppose to that decision, but discretely, Zuo Qingluan shakes her head to tell him not to. They have a plan. I mean, our mal leads have a plan, but we have no details yet about it.

Ohhhh! So mister Ning is alright? It is announced to the officials that were all locked up in a room together. This news seems to anger one of the person inside, no idea who that could be as they only show a close shot of their fist squeezing in anger (combined with the marvelous sound of squeaking leather, very natural. In case your fist ever produces such a sound while tightening it, I suggest consulting with your doctor because that is anything bu normal). Seeing the size of that hand though, I would guess it is a man, women are portrayed with really tiny hands and delicate features in general. The physician says that mister Ning needs to rest for three days before he can wake up and get better. As soon as he’s left alone, a dark figure comes by. But when they stab the bed, they discover there are only pillows under the blankets. So... Is director Ning alright or not??????? It appears this was Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye’s plan to catch the culprit. That person is extremely strong, too powerful an adversary for Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye combined. They seem to know techniques of both the Biluo Palace and the Dark Night Court. They manage to discover who it is by pulling his hood, uncovering Wu Youdao. He asks to see Feng Wu and retreats to the library, taking Gao Wei as an hostage with him. Once Feng Wu is brought over, Wu Youdao accepts that Jun Linyuan accompanies her, but won’t allow Yu Mingye to come in. As they enter, they stumble upon Wu Youdao looking at a painting of a lady with white hair, who happened to be the only female master of the Junwu Academy and also Jun Linyuan’s previous teacher.

So, Wu Youdao really is the killer of Ning. The lady in the painting died at the Academy in a fire incident and they never found out her corpse. Wu Youdao was supposed to be nominated as principal of this school, but headmaster Ning took it away from him, arguing that only he could give the lady in the painting the position she deserves, since he has better birth qualifications. So Wu Youdao left the academy to travel and that’s how he got his hands on a scroll from Mu Jiuzhou. Jun Linyuan accuses him of poisoning the emperor to accomplish his revenge, but Feng Wu says it’s not him, he wouldn’t do something like that. Jun Linyuan tries to convince him to surrender, but he won’t. He tells Jun Lingyuan that Feng Wu is Mu Jiuzhou’s disciple. Since they are both disciples of peope he respects, Wu Youdao won’t hurt them. But as it is Yunniang’s (lady in the painting) death anniversary, he says it’s time for everything to be over. He throws them inside a pit with a spell preventing them from using their spiritual energy and so they stay in there until everything’s over. Hopefully, somebody will find them. He wants to destroy the academy. Epic battle between old Fang and Wu Youdao.

Funny how the secret room looks exactly the same as the one with the jade vase, but instead of precious artefacts, it’s filled with books and parchments. Jun Linyuan asks Feng Wu if she’s really Mu Jiuzhou’s disciple and if she’s trying to awaken him. He noticed that the world’s balance is getting troubled, like there’s some sort of barrier put on by him that seems to be cracking. He promises to help her in her task and doesn’t blame her for not saying anything previously about it. Feng Wu notices a painting of her master on the wall, which happens to be a door that opens in reaction to her ring.

And that’s it for today’s episode! The whole story about Wu Youdao seems very useless to me and quite unjustified. Shouldn’t we focus on the evil queen instead? Anyways... I don’t really fully understand why he wants revenge so much, I might have not understood that part of the backstory due to my laziness or my not as good as before Chinese skills. I feel we’re wasting for what’s important when there are only a few episodes left and I fear the ending might be rushed, as they are way too often in Chinese dramas...

We have reached now way past the middle of the series and are going towards the ending. There’s still a few episodes and I do hope that they use their time well. At this point I have two fears : either they will add too much and it will be lacking in explanations, either they’re going to run in circles endlessly until the end. Both options seems very likely for me. As for now, I hope they focus on getting Feng Wu’s phœnix blood and nothing more. Then engagement with Jun Linyuan and happily ever after. Or something of a regular unsatisfying ending, without too many deaths. Because there are always too many deaths in Chinese dramas.

Zuo Qingluan’s master is once again very mad at her for failing. But... you that wasn’t her fault. The guy is in love with Feng Wu since they were kids. Even though she is quite different than she used to be before. Zhao Ge kind of witnesses her elder disciple sister being ignored and think of the past, whence her mother used to abuse Qingluan if she wasn’t doing good enough. I don’t understand why she’s being so cold towards Qingluan nowadays, it seems she used to care a lot for her, but keeps a distance. I mean I get that she’s bad at cultivating her spiritual powers and she’s an outcast in her sect since she’s not meeting her mom’s expectation, but that’s a little over the top. Zhao Ge seems to want to talk to Qingluan, but she’s invited to visit the empress. Qingluan swears to serve the empress. She doesn’t like Jun linyuan, she just likes winning.

Feng Xun is still upset about Jun Linyuan and Feng Wu, ish. I mean, he should be over it by now. Anyways, he tells Jun Linyuan to be careful. Yu Mingye could try to get Feng wu away from him, this dude is weird. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such murderous intent in Jun Linyuan’s eyes as he polishes his sword.

Talking about Yu Mingye, he’s too busy following Wu Youdao to pursue Feng Wu seriously. He thinks there’s something fishy inside the library, but doesn’t know what yet.

The colourful bird calls Feng Wu. He thinks the second piece is going to appear anytime soon. Also, something bad is going to happen at the school. He doesn’t know what yet, but his intuition is always right so he tells Feng Wu to remain on guard.

I thought there was some fighting happening, but it was actually only Zuo Qingluan training or venting her frustrations. She ended up meeting Yu Mingye. I really like the dynamic between the two of them. In some ways they are quite similar as they have to bear the pression of the role they are forced to take on. Geniuses, their sect leader expect a lot of them. I think that’s the reason why Yu Mingye is well qualified to advise Zuo Qingluan and that he always hits the mark with her. And I know he does because she would remain unphased otherwise. Yu Mingye is probably the only character who gets to see Zuo Qingluan as who she really is and she need more people to open their eyes for her to find inner peace. My humble opinion. Plus we’ve got to see more of the relationship between Yu Mingye and his father. This guy is really hungry for power. It’s sad, because along the way, he’s totally breaking down his own son.

So it’s Chinese Valentine’s day (I actually don’t like calling it like this because it is actually for spouses and not for couples, but I don’t feel like explaining the whole thing right now) and the girls can write letters to the boy they like. Zhao Ge convinces Feng Wu to write one for Jun Linyuan and herself is going to write one for Xuan Yi. Seeing how many letters Jun Linyuan received, Feng Wu decides on not handing over her own letter. Zhao Ge put hers in Xuan Yi’s book, but Feng Xun grabs it because he lent it to Xuan Yi and thinks Zhao Ge’s letter was for him. He prepares for the date with her, leaving both Xuan Yi and Jun Linyuan upset. To be honest, both love stories aren’t so interesting to me hahaha.

Something happens to the Emperor, he collapses while he was reading in his room (I guess it is his room). Jun Linyuan was on his way to see Feng Wu and confront her when Zuo Qingluan informs him something happened to his father. I wonder why she’s the one relaying the message. It’s not like they don’t have servants and stuff to take care of it. She’s not an employee of the residence or something, is she? Anyways, mister Ning says he’s alright to the empress, but when Jun Linyuan comes inquiring of his father, he eye signal him that they should talk alone. DRAMAAAA. It appears that someone is tampering with the spiritual energy of the emperor. He needs to read some books first, because it’s really rare and he is unsure of the cause. Of course, Zuo Qingluan eavesdrop on their conversation. Jun Linyuan must stay by his father’s side until he wakes up again.

So the empress sent a servant girl to the emperor’s side so she could spy on his every movement and she would feed him some pill tampering with his energy. She’s been poisinning him for already three years, so the effects would appear slowly, without leaving a trace. I’m not even surprised. It has been shown for a while that the empress isn’t a very nice person. I really wonder what is actually her main goal. She doesn’t have any children of her own, she doesn’t seem to want to kill Jun Linyuan and take over the power... so I really don’t know. Anyways she kills the maid. Well, her underling, I can’t remember the guy’s name. They use the corpse to stage a different lead, pretending the maid hung herself and admitted in a letter feeding the emperor poison on the orders of someone inside the Junwu academy. Jun Linyuan is reluctant to believe it. Just... pretend to go along with it. Sometimes he’s just really too dumb. The empress orders to search everyone at the academy. Jun Linyuan tries to oppose her, but his hands are tied. I wonder who she’s going to frame. Feng Wu? Wu youdao? Principal Ning? Jun Linyuan is really unhappy about Zuo Qingluan being over. Wow. Bravo. It was about time that you realized that she doesn’t give a damn about being the consort princess. Qingluan is despicable in many ways, but she’s really not an airhead like other young girls her age. She has always relied on no one but herself and she never shown any interest in being consort princess, only perhaps for the fact that she wants to be on top everyone else.

As to be expected, the story is getting even more complicated as it evolves even though there aren’t many episodes left to unravel all the mystery. I think they’re going to use the opportunity well. I mean, the villains. They’ll probably lose in the end, but for sure a lot of drama is incoming.

Dance of the Phœnix - Episode 18

Last episode ended with the start of our protagonists daily life at Junwu Academy. There are still much unknown parts of the plot, so many mysteries to solve. Jun Linyuan was punished for disobeying his father, Yu Mingye is reporting intel that doesn't please his father. Where will all of that lead? I'll try my best to figure it out, if my cat lets me, she's very needy today somehow.

Wu Youdao took Feng Wu to the library, she's allowed to the first floor, the other one is forbidden. He tells her he wanted to have a chat for a while as he feels that they are connected by fate and she must feel it too. He lets her know that the answer she is looking for must be here in the books and he hands her a key of the library so she could come in and out as she wishes. However he tells her she's not allowed to tell anyone about it, not even Jun Linyuan.

Zuo Qingluan gives a ball of medicine to Zhao Ge for Feng Wu, since she has been punished for the past two days. Zhao Ge tries to push Qingluan away once again. I know that she doesn't have such a good relationship with her sect, as she's fairly weak and the daughter of its master. I still don't quite gather why is Zuop Qingluan so hung up on her and why she wants her as far away as possible. Xuan Yi saw everything and seems to try and comfort her a little bit.

Wu Youdao tells Feng Wu that her being with Jun Linyuan is bound to heavy consequences (nothing less than massive destruction) because she isn't really herself and he is himself. Something like that. But would that dude know that? He warns her that she should not forget her objective because of love. Then he tells her again not to the forbidden section. She remembers her first meeting with her master after she woke up from her phœnix blood being taken.

Jun Linyuan goes to Feng Wu's place, but she's not there. She stayed at the library until night. As she leaves, she hears someone coming by and goes back inside. Turns out it's Yu Mingye. She scolds him for being where it's forbidden. He asks her to pretend either of them where in there. He invites her to have dinner together. She refuses at first, but he drags her away. Seems like Jun Linyuan saw them. When she comes home, Zhao Ge is asleep on the table, from waiting for her. Zhao Ge tells Feng Wu Jun Linyuan searched like crazy for her and that she should explain to him the next day.

As she falls asleep, she is dragged into the ring. She asks why she feels Wu Youdao is familiar, but the bird has no idea. The bird warns her about how things could change if she stays here instead of going back where she comes from. Next morning, she avoids Jun Linyuan. She knows she shouldn't get attached but it's hard. Then she bumps in Feng Xun while going to the library to study. She wonders why he won't go to see the empress like the others, but he doesn't like her. She's going to chose a partner to dance with Jun Linyuan. She says it's going to be Zuo Qingluan, no one else could. But he says she could, but she brushes it off and runs away.

I know it's pretty irrelevant, but I really like the empress's hairstyle. I wish I had enough hair to do something similar. Mu Yao blurts out that Qingluan should be the one performing with Jun Linyuan. The empress likes it. Jun Linyuan suggests that there should be a way for others to be selected. The empress agrees, but if no one else is up to the challenge, Zuo qingluan will have the honour.

The teacher complains to You Wudao about Feng Wu. Then Wu Youdao shows him a work she did, without showing her name, and he's very impressed. He explains that she's so busy studying all night long that she keeps falling asleep in class, it's not that she's a bad student at all.

Jun Linyuan is moping. Xuan Yi inquires about it, even though he pretends that he's fine. Xuan Yi convinces him to confide, saying that Feng Xun is asleep so no one will hear about it. Jun Linyuan wants Feng Wu to do the sword dance with him in front of the empress. That way. She could become his consort princess. However, Feng Wu has been avoiding him lately and he can't really understand why. So Xuan Yi suggests that since he can't find that kind of answers in books, he should directly ask her.

Mu Yao and the other disciples congratulate Zuo Qingluan. She doesn't seem to give a care about being married to Jun Linyuan, whereas the others are super excited about it. Some of them badmouth a little Zhao Ge which angers Qingluan. The girls apologize, but Mu Yao thinks to herself that she'll her she's better than that runaway Zhao Ge. Basically, she's jealous, but we already knew she was the jelly type.

Zhao Ge tries to convince Feng Wu to participate in the competition for the dance, but she says it's worthless because she's going to leave anyways. It's better not to start something that will fatally end. Meanwhile Zuo Qingluan tries to absorb I guess Feng Wu's phœnix blood but it's not working at all.

Next morning, Mu Yao is all ready to bully sweet Zhao Ge. She tells her to get lost with Feng Wu. Roughly. Then Zhao Ge tells her that she's going to her mom, but Mu Yao says that her mother doesn't want her anymore. Which angers very much Zhao Ge and she starts fighting with Mu Yao. Zhao Ge ends up getting hurt. Qingluan is unhappy, but the most angry is none else than Xuan Yi and he threatens to persecute her if she ever bothers Zhao Ge again.

Yu Mingye wants to take Feng Wu fishing and have fun. She doesn't want to, she's upset because she hasn't found what she's looking for. He tries to take her and she's still set on not going until she sees Jun Linyuan. Then she accepts. But Feng Xun comes with news of Zhao Ge being in an incident. Mu Yao is being interrogated and witnesses say that they were bullying Zhao Ge first. She gets punished by being locked up for 7 days since she didn't follow the rules and didn't regret her actions, even tried to lie. She calls to Zuo Qingluan. She also gets scolded for not guiding better her fellow younger disciple. Feng Wu speaks up so they get properly punished because there are no guarantee she won't get hurt again. However, the school masters say it's enough since Zuo Qingluan has promised it won't happen again. Feng Wu is not satisfied so she decides to participate in the sword thing. She says she won't let Biluo Palace people have the honours when they are mean like this.

Feng Wu obviously regrets it right away. Feng Xun was ready to play tricks but Jun Linyuan talks him out of it and he takes Feng Wu to a beautiful place. Good thinking to build a better connection. He never took anyone else here. He's going to help her win over Zuo Qingluan. He's teaching her a technique from his clan. It's actually very romantic. It's just that it doesn't work with her whole attitude for the episode. She wants to win for Zhao Ge and for Jun Linyuan. It bothers me very much...

Zuo Qingluan visits Mu Yao secretly. She beats her for harming Zhao Ge. Jealousy crisis. Flashback. When she was sad, Zhao Ge comforted Zuo Qingluan. Is it a crush? Well there's no way that I would know because that's how the episode ends.

This has been rather frustrating. One moment Feng Wu is all in Jun Linyuan, the next it's as if they never had any moments as a couple. Because they really feel and act like one sometimes. So annoying. I'm glad we get to see a little bit more of Qingluan's background, because for now she's just a bad guy and we don't know why. I hope next episode shed so light on that matter. Yu Mingye looks on as Wu Youdao plays hopscotch* with some disciples. Yu Mingye is kind of jealous that he wasn’t invited to play. At that exact same moment, in another universe far away, Xue Yang is playing a game with some villagers. The game is called “Fear”** and the rules are simple: the villagers get to run and/or hide, and if (when) Xue Yang catches them, he murders them. This makes them the loser.

*When I looked at my screencaps all I thought was “it looks like he’s hopping” and I’m not sorry.

**Does anyone has any better suggestions to name Xue Yang’s game?

Dance of the Phoenix: A Character Guide*

*by a very biased and unreliable narrator

Part Two: The Adults**

**and a magical bird

Holy Queen Gao Sheng

The mastermind behind all the evil plots going on. Hates cultivators, despite being an allegedly powerful one herself, and uses the cultivators to destroy each other. Jun Linyuan’s step-mother. Gao Wei’s aunt. Zuo Qingluan’s boss and mentor. Has a gorgeous wardrobe. Became evil after Mu Jiuzhou rejected her love in favour of becoming immortal. Has been slowly poisoning her husband for years to take over his throne. May have a thing going on with Lord Demon. Also called Ziyan by her nephew and Lord Demon, so I’m assuming that’s her birth name and Sheng is her courtesy name.

Lord Demon

Lord of the Darknight Court. Yu Mingye’s father. Definitely not in the running for the Dad of the Year award. Values power above all else, including his son. In cahoots with Queen Sheng. Helps convert Zuo Qingluan to the Dark Side. He’s strict and both physically and mentally abusive toward Yu Mingye, using the kid as little more than a slave. Disowns and abandons Mingye after he’s seriously injured, branding him “Useless”. Apparently does love Yu Mingye in his own weird way as he’s unable to kill him at a critical moment. No actual name given but I’m guessing “Lord Demon” is the title of the master of the Darknight Court because no parents would actually name their kid “Lord Demon”. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess his surname is “Yu”. Killed some puppies, that’s how evil he is. I’ll admit he’s very attractive, and the evilness ups that hotness by at least 20%.

Mu Jiuzhou

The only cultivator to achieve immortality but was interrupted during his ascension, causing him to fall into a coma inside the Dragon Phoenix Spirit Ring. Or something. Hero and first ruler of the Qianyuan Continent. Feng Wu’s Master. Spends most of his time asleep or appearing in Feng Wu’s subconscious to guide her. The only person to scare Lord Demon. Thankfully no relation to Mu Yao.

Colour Phoenix/Firecloud Giant Hawk

Was a badass Firecloud Giant Hawk that protected the Celestial Fruit in the Frozen Forest. Upon Feng Wu retrieving the Fruit, he goes to live inside the Dragon Phoenix Spirit Ring with Mu Jiuzhou, in the form of a little blue sparrow with a squeaky voice. Claims to be a phoenix. Acts as Feng Wu’s spirit guide and delivers her information and help at critical moments. Annoying to the point of endearment.

Holy Sovereign

King of the Qianyuan Continent. Well-meaning but kind of useless. Jun Linyuan’s dad. Does better at fatherhood than Lord Demon, but still not in the running for the Dad of the Year award either. When poisoning failed to kill him, he was simply overthrown by Queen Sheng and Lord Demon, and subsequently imprisoned. Seems to have been released so is king once more? No name given.

Gao Wei

Queen Sheng’s nephew and her righthand man when it comes to evil schemes. Head of the palace guards. Surprisingly loyal to his aunt. Was taken hostage but nobody cared. Total scumbag. Killed by a magical fan.

Wu Youdao

Bears the moniker of Ageless Child despite being both old and an adult. Very powerful master cultivator. Master Fang’s rival in chess. Has been holding a grudge against Dean Ning for decades and eventually takes a job as Junwu Academy’s librarian so that he can murder Ning and destroy the Academy. Realised Feng Wu’s actual identity and helps her discover who she is. Would’ve actually been a great mentor for her had he not hulked-out and died in a pointless bid for revenge.

Madam Feng

Feng Wu’s mother. Spends most episodes looking worried. Knows Feng Wu #2 isn’t really Feng Wu but doesn’t say anything, and continues to be a loving mother towards Feng Wu #2 regardless. Plunged her hands into fire to rescue her daughter’s necklace, knowing how precious it is to her. Take notes, Lord Demon, that’s how parenting is done.

Qiu Ling*

The Feng family’s maid and Feng Wu’s close friend. Is often an accomplice in Feng Wu’s trickery. Very loyal to Feng Wu. Teaches Feng Xun how to cook.

*I know Qiu Ling is around Feng Wu’s age but she wouldn’t fit on the other list.

Old Man Ba

Medicinal cultivator and renowned doctor. Teaches medicine and healing to Feng Wu. Might be an alcoholic. Is very much like a grandfather to Feng Wu. Has some of the best reaction shots in the show. Wonderfully sarcastic. Helps Feng Wu regain her cultivation base by using the Celestial Fruit to create the Nine Transformation Spirit Restoration Pill. Lives for Feng Wu’s cooking.
