Passing the Time
While waiting for labs at the hospital, Scully helps Mulder pass the time.
Fictober day 6. Prompt: That's All? Easy.
For my dear friend Ingrid. 💓
Tumblr media
February 7, 2018 George Washington Memorial Hospital
“How much longer did they say?” Mulder asked Scully as she closed the door and rejoined him in the hospital’s waiting area.
“Twenty minutes at least,” she replied and he sighed heavily.
“We’ve already been waiting for two hours.”
“Lab work takes time. You know that.”
“I do,” he said with a nod. “I also know that we’ve been out of the game for a while. Maybe there were advancements while we were away.”
“Excuse me?” she asked, picking up a random magazine as she sat down. “We haven’t been away from anything. You have. I worked in a hospital until very recently, remember? I am aware how long labs can take.”
“You know what I meant,” he said, rolling his eyes and she hummed. Glancing at the pages before her, but not finding much interest in them. “I guess I just forgot about the waiting part.”
“No, you’ve never been good at waiting,” she said, turning the pages with a sigh.
“In regard to some things,” he said and she turned her head to look at him. He shrugged and gave her a small smile.
“Hmm,” she hummed again, her attention back on the magazine. His leg bumped hers as he began to bounce it and she pressed into him, silently telling him to stop. “Don’t you have something you can do on your phone? A game to play or something you can read?”
“Not really.”
“You had that one game you were playing. Just do that and the time will go by faster,” she said, feeling as though she was speaking to a large child.
“But it’s boringgggg,” he said, dragging the word out dramatically while he bumped his leg into hers.
“Mulder,” she said, huffing out a laugh. “Twenty minutes is hardly any time at all. You’ll be fine.”
“At least twenty minutes. That’s what you said they said, right? So it could be more.”
“You wanna find a supply closet and make out?” she asked, turning her head and looking at him as he immediately stilled.
“You… you’re… seriously?”
“Of course not,” she said, looking back at the magazine and shaking her head. “We’re working.”
“If that’s the only hold up, I’ll take a rain check.”
“Sure,” she said, turning another page and not giving it much thought.
“I’m gonna hold you to it,” he said, his voice lower and she fought back a smile, enjoying teasing him.
“With or without clothing?” she asked, her voice also low.
“Definitely without,” he answered quickly and this time she was unable to hold back her smile. “Or whatever you prefer.”
She turned her head and held his eyes, seeing the desire within them. Leaning closer, she grazed his cheek with her own as she brought her lips close to his ear.
“I prefer without as well,” she whispered, brushing a kiss to his cheek as she pulled away.
He groaned softly and she smiled as her attention turned back to the magazine.
“Christ, Scully,” he breathed, putting his arm along the back of her chair and looking around the room.
“You gonna make it?” she teased and he laughed as he shifted in his seat.
“Honestly? Sometimes I don’t know, Scully.”
“I do enjoy keeping you on your toes. Or your back.”
“Fuck,” he breathed, shaking his head. She bit her lip to keep from laughing.
“Can I offer any help to alleviate any discomfort you’re presently experiencing?”
“Yeah, you can stop talking,” he nearly growled.
“Or I could offer a distraction.”
“No, that’s how we ended up here.”
“A different kind of distraction,” she said with a laugh.
“I’ll be the judge. Let me hear  it.”
“You consider yourself an intelligent man,” she stated, looking at the magazine. Pausing on a page, she considered the pair of pants the model was wearing.
“I do indeed, but I’m not sure I’m liking where this is heading.”
“You have an incredible memory. Some might say it's too incredible.”
“It’s definitely served me well,” he said, stretching out his legs and crossing the left foot over the right. “In more ways than one.”
“Hmm,” she said, trying not to let her mind wander too far, knowing how well his memory had served in their sex life. Even from the very beginning, it was as though he had memorized every spot that made her cry out and beg him for more.
“So what did you have in mind?” he asked and she shook her head, pushing away those thoughts.
Later, she told herself. Definitely later.
“Make a list of all fifty states,” she said and he looked at her.
“A list of all the states? That’s your grand plan to help me pass the time?” he asked, moving his arm and sitting up, his brow furrowed even as he smiled. “List the states? That’s all? Easy.”
“And the capitals,” she said as he stood up, patting his suit jacket, most likely looking for a pen.
“What?” he asked, stopping and staring at her. “The capitals too?”
“You said listing the states was easy. We’ve got time to kill so… capitals too,” she said, turning a page and raising an eyebrow at him.
“Oh… you’re going to regret this. I’ll be done way before the labs are.”
“So you say,” she said, looking at the magazine. “Yet there you stand, writing nothing down.”
“Oh, you… you…” He shook his head, waving his finger at her. “I’m gonna find some paper and then… be prepared to be amazed.”
“I’m all a tingle,” she said with an exaggerated shiver.
“You… ha ha ha,” he said, walking out of the room to hunt down some paper.
She smiled as she put the magazine down and reached for another.
He was back quickly, heading to the small table in the corner of the waiting area, when she stood up and stopped him.
“Give me your phone.”
“You don’t trust me?”
“No,” she laughed. “Not for things like this. Gimme it.”
“I can’t believe you don’t trust me,” he said, taking his phone from his pocket and handing it to her. “I would never-”
“Dyspareunia,” she said, putting his phone in her pocket. “Thought of that word on your own to build off of your previous word spare?” She raised her eyebrows and he shrugged with his palms up, a guilty smile on his face. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. I’ll be holding onto your phone. Go on.”
“Bossy,” he said, as he continued past her.
“You love it,” she stated and he nodded, grinning at her.
“I absolutely do. Especially when-”
“Nope,” she said, pointing at the paper. “Get to writing.” He saluted as he sat down as she shook her head as she also sat down.
Quiet fell over the room and she was surprised when she realized ten minutes had passed without any interruptions. Looking over at him, she smiled as she saw how focused he was as he wrote. Suddenly feeling sleepy, she set the magazine beside her, crossed her arms, and closed her eyes.
“Hey,” Mulder said softly and she opened her eyes. “It always amazes me how you can fall asleep anywhere.”
“Are you done?” she asked, sitting up and looking at the paper in his hand.
“Why yes, Miss Scully. I got all my homework done,” he said in a southern drawl, handing the paper to her. She took it with a smile, her eyes running over his words.
“You know,” he said as he sat down. “That was actually harder than I thought it would be.”
“Hmm,” she hummed. “That’s not surprising.”
“What are you trying to say?” he asked and she laughed quietly.
“Nothing about you in particular. It’s just not something we think about in our normal day to day life, so it’s not surprising that it proved to be somewhat difficult.”
“As long as it wasn’t a dig at my intelligence,” he said, sticking out his lower lip.
“I would never. Did I not call you an intelligent man earlier?”
“No. You stated that I considered myself an intelligent man.”
“Did I?” she asked, tapping her finger against the paper as she read.
Juneau, Alaska. Austin, Texas. Olympia, Washington.    “You did. Find any mistakes?”
“Not yet,” she said, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye.
“You won’t. Because, I have a fantastic memory, as I believe you said.”
“Ohhh. You were so close,” she said, closing her eyes briefly and shaking her head. “I said you had an incredible memory, but it looks like I was wrong.”
“Fantastic… incredible. One would say they’re interchangeable,” he said, moving his hands as though weighing the words on a scale.
“Hmm,” she hummed, nodding in agreement.
Columbus, Ohio. Montpelier, Vermont. Bismarck, North Dakota.
“So what’s the word, Teach?” he asked as she folded the paper in half.
“All correct. One hundred percent,” she said, smiling as she turned her head to look at him.
“A hundred percent. That should get a gold star,” he stated and she sighed.
“Unfortunately, I’m all out of gold stars at the moment.”
“Huh…” he said, rubbing his fingers across his chin. “No gold stars? You got anything else of value? I mean… a perfect paper achieved by my incredibly fantastic memory… it deserves something.”
Smiling again as she leaned closer to him, she placed a hand on his cheek and kissed him softly. Then again. Then once more, her lips lingering on his.
“Better than a gold star?” she whispered and he hummed as he kissed her before pulling back slightly.
“Much better,” he whispered back, bumping his nose gently against hers.
She pulled back further, smiling at him, her fingers scratching lightly at the stubble upon his cheek. He smiled and she dropped her hand with a sigh just as the door to the waiting area opened and the lab technician stepped inside.
“Agents, I have the results you’ve been waiting for,” he said and they both stood to their feet and followed the technician down the hall.
Though her focus was on the case and the new evidence they now had, her mind kept drifting to the softness of Mulder’s lips and how she wanted to feel them on hers again.
Without clothing this time, she thought. Most assuredly without clothing.

Revival Rewatch - Fic Recs
Need something to read to pass the time waiting for date night to start while your (past - present? - future) partner tears his (your?) Unremarkable House apart in search of a lost Twilight Zone episode that he’s sure is somewhere in this pile of old vhs tapes? I don’t read a lot of revival fics but here are a few I can recommend:
Revival Smut:
Subterranean Pool by @somekindofseizure - Office sex, season 7 vs season 10, NSFW, so good.
Gravity by @ms-starlight71 - Sex in the Unremarkable House, NSFW.
Birthday Girl by @storybycorey - It’s her birthday, you know. Fifty-four years old and tucked into the back of a shiny yellow St. Louis cab, wearing a dress probably better suited to a thirty year old, with its slit up the side and its deep V of a neckline, but she looks so damn good in it, she doesn’t care. NSFW, so hot.
Just One by @observeroftheuniverse - Plus One sex scene, what we all needed, NSFW.
Familiar by @phillippadgettwrites - Plus One sex scene, NSFW.
Revival Fix-its:
Untitled by @myassbrokethefall - rewrite of the Plus One conversation in bed so that it actually makes sense.
End of Story by @cecilysass - Plus One conversation in bed fix-it.
Transitive Property of Equality by flicked_switch - fills in the gaps of their relationship over the course of season 11, canon-compliant, NSFW.
Of Monsters and Men, and a Woman by @snickerl - the confrontation with CSM they deserved.
After She Left by @agoodwoman - Over the course of the season 10 timeline, Mulder and Scully have to heal, forgive and learn to trust again as they decide what the future holds for their relationship before it's too late. NSFW. I’ve been trying to find a fic I remember with similar themes to this, where they work through their issues after the breakup in the season 10 era - it was a casefile (like this fic has between season 10 episodes) but I remember couples therapy being a big part of the other fic - if you know what that other fic might be please let me know!
Post Revival:
Times Colliding by @gaycrouton - 2018 and 1998 Mulders switch places, WIP but I just love this concept so much. NSFW.
Reprise by akaJake - Thirty years after Eugene Victor Tooms was mangled to death inside a moving escalator, several murder victims are discovered with their livers missing, ripped from their bodies without the aid of cutting tools. There are no identifiable points of entry at any of the crime scenes. Could Tooms be back?
Straight Out of the 3-Pack by DanaScullyMakesMeFeelAutopsyTurvey - Following the events of My Struggle 4, Scully finds a token from their shared past, inspiring a revelation and a sensual reimagining. NSFW.
It’s Après Ski, Scully by @agirlcallednarelle - Mulder takes Scully skiing for New Year's in 2018 to help them both move on from the events of the year. Some angst, some fluff, some closure. This is what I want for them post-revival.
The Rains of Bimini by @slippinmickeys - How could he have known, when she walked into his office with her bad suit and her earnest smile, that she would be the last person he would ever love? You don’t always realize the momentous things as they’re happening, and so he’d needled her a little; without any thought to his lost sister, he’d used his snottiest big brother voice and accused her of spying. Her. His last, best love. Set far in the future, it’s just lovely.

👽 Random X-Files Fic Rec
This fic is a wonderful glimpse into Scully and her connection with William (grown up as Jackson) and her relationship with Mulder. It's slightly disjointed and odd in a way of dreams, but that's perfect for capturing Scully's current state. Title: down from the stars, up from the sea Author: @melforbes Summary: None provided Length: ~1,475 words Classification: None provided Rating: Not rated Spoilers: None provided (but assume through season 11) Favorite line: it was odd, how quickly she grew accustomed to their sloppy nighttime kisses again, a communion of aimless need, a confirmation of whatever they were each overthinking. Read the story!

The Case of Pillows
Fictober 2022—Day 14: Scully's pregnant and hogs all the pillows, leaving Mulder nothing; tagging @today-in-fic @xffictober2022; also on AO3
--
His neck hurt, his back ached, and over all, he felt sore. But he can't really get mad at the cause of it. Turning over to his side he sees the love of his love hog and hug all of the pillows they had in the bed. She looked comfortable and almost well-rested. He moved closer to her before pressing a kiss to her warm forehead.
"Mmmm," Scully softly moaned in her sleep, burrowing her face into one of the pillows, obvious still wanting to stay in dreamland.
Mulder chuckled and let her be. He knew how she's been missing good sleep lately. Kissing her forehead again, he left their bed and headed to the kitchen.
He's been preparing her breakfast for the last few weeks now—toast to start (in case she wasn't feeling on really eating something), some fruit they have available, and milk. And everytime she'd request for something more special, he was more than happy to delivery. Everything for his Scully and their baby.
Returning to their bedroom with a food tray in hand, he found Scully still fast asleep. She was still on her side, the pillows positioned perfectly against her to fit her comfortably. She had a leg and arm draped over at least two pillows, and it reminded Mulder that maybe it would be a good idea to buy her a pregnancy pillow—something that seemed to be more comfortable than individual ones.
Setting the tray on top of the ottoman at the end if their bed, Mulder then moved to her side of the bed. He marveled at her beauty—her cheeks were now a bit fuller, her freckles a bit more prominent, and her lips more luscious—she was 'glowing' even in her sleep. He started to softly wake her up, tapping on her shoulder or peppering kisses on her face. She stirred at the sensations, and soon began to open her eyes.
"Hi, good morning." She whispered to him, still sleepy.
"Good morning, baby." He replied, then chuckled when he watched Scully crinkle her nose at the pet name.
He pressed a kiss on her nose before telling her it was time for breakfast.
"Help me up?" She said to him.
"Always."
Mulder helped Scully sit up on the bed, arranging the pillows on her back and returning some back to his side of the bed.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
They ate breakfast in bed, then snuggled afterwards. They didn't have to be anywhere and so lounging and lazing around seemed like a nice idea.
He was about to suggest the pregnancy pillow thing to Scully when he realized she had fallen back to sleep, this time latched against him and positioned as if she was a giant pillow. He shook his head with a smile. Pregnancy pillow suggestion can wait next time, he can be her human pillow and she can have his pillows as long as she wants.

i've been really nostalgic about the x files revival lately. not necessarily the show itself, though it was a gift as a younger fan to watch xf live, but the fandom experience we had. i miss david and gillian. i miss the fun we had, i miss their banter and them egging us on about it which made it feel much less taboo than this sort of thing usually feels. i miss david apologizing for his behavior during the original run, i love feeling his genuine love for the show, for the fans and his respect for gillian as an actor. i miss gillian being on tumblr, i miss chewiesgirlfriend, i miss making fun of the revival wig here and her seeing that and getting the wig changed bc she knew were right.
and i miss the hope of what the show could have been, the hope for a better ending.
and bc of this i'm looking back on the numbers, the ratings on the revival and like... this is not something i am imagining as bigger than it was. 24 MILLION PEOPLE tuned in LIVE in 2016 to the premiere. this is the highest numbers fox had been in AGES, it's one of the most viewed x-files episodes ever.
the public never fell out of love with the x-files.
now, after the premiere ratings did drop, but they remained insanely high for a fox show in 2016. s10 stood at a proud 8-10 million viewers a week til the season finale.
s10 is not what pissed people off until the finale.
when s11 premiered it premiered to a 62% decrease in viewership, which only decreased even more after the god awful csm "plot twist."
and what i find the most frustrating about this is that season 11 is good. "this" has an approval rating of 97% among critics and was recieved positively by pretty much the entire fandom. but by then people felt so betrayed that they had stopped watching.
and it just makes me sad because when people think of the revival they think of how chris carter fumbled the bag with the mythology, understandably, but often forget the fun we had, how special an event it all was and how there are genuinely fabtastic episodes in there with some of david and gillian's best performances maybe ever.

20 Fanfic Questions
Thanks for the tag (days and days ago now) @randomfoggytiger.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 21 as of today, which is kind of wild. (I have some on Gossamer, too, because: old.)
2. What's your total AO3 words count?306,501. Working on another longer-ish one that will bump that up.
3. What fandoms do you write for?The X-Files by and large. One time I wrote a fic for a very popular fandom of the 00s I never actually posted, and now I feel differently about that fandom and never will. I can imagine a world where I might write for another fandom, but I am pretty XF-centric right now.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?Chicken Dinner, Pause, The Boy on the Beach, The Kaleidoscope, Unobserved.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?I do respond to comments, but not all the time. I get behind in responding, and then I have to not respond to any of them to make it consistent, if that makes any sense at all? (Because someone might wonder—why did she respond to that comment and not to mine?) I know, I know, I'm sorry.  I honestly love every single comment, and I prefer to respond to them. When I have my life together, I have had great conversations in comments before.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? As I read over my work, I have not done a lot of angsty endings, although I have plenty of angst. I have a very old fic written the summer between season 7 and 8 called Opposition and Synthesis (one of many post-Requiem fics) that is on Gossamer and ends angsty, but that’s not a widely read piece any more, lol. I would say of my more recent work, probably Ice Water ends the angstiest.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I have lots of happy endings. I couldn’t say.
8. Do you get hate on fics?Nooooo, not per se. I have gotten very critical comments from people who are disappointed by the turn the fic has taken, or comments taking issue with my interpretation of canon. I remember someone didn’t like the idea of Scully going on dates at all in the break-up era, and they complained about that in the comments on End of Story. That’s a difference in headcanon, so sometimes it’s frustrating when people feel theirs should prevail. But I haven’t really received what I would call “hate” exactly (so far) for which I am grateful.
9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? I have, but it’s not my favorite. It’s completely hypocritical of me because I like to read it, but it’s not my most comfortable area of writing. I think it’s a problem of not being terribly visual.  I do feel sometimes it’s necessary to a story, and my betas peer pressure me into including it sometimes, too.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?I haven’t.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. People translated some of my fic into Russian one time.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. I would like to do that.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Mulder and Scully. Duh.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Okay, I have told this story a few times, so bear with me if you’ve heard it, but I had a WIP I hadn’t finished between 2000-ish and 2021. That’s right. Twenty years. It would be very reasonable to assume I was never finishing that fic, as the first two parts had been up on Gossamer for years and I had not been seen or heard from in decades. Then during the pandemic I came back to thinking about the show, and when I came back to the fandom there were oddly people who still knew my fic. And I remembered this WIP and still had some of the ancient Word files of later chapters on my Google drive, so I decided to make a little project of finishing it and posting it to AO3. And now it’s finished. (It’s called Bloodline. You can read it and see if you can tell where the narrative is written 20 years apart.)  So I don’t believe in doubting you’ll ever finish WIPs. Never say never.
16. What are your writing strengths? I think dialogue. I would not have said plotting when I restarted this hobby, but I do think I have gotten better at plotting. And I do plan things out. I do a lot of research.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Smut. Logistics in moving around in general – like when someone is standing or sitting and how they move from one place in the room to the other. I write in present tense a lot but past tense sometimes, so sometimes I mess up tense absent-mindedly. I’m also a very slow writer who rewrites a lot. When I see people get a prompt and then post the fic a few days later, my mind is blown, because I could absolutely never. People who do Fictober also have my deep respect, because that would be a very, very hard thing for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would only do it very sparingly or with extensive help, as I’m not a fluent speaker in anything but English. I could probably write a little French or Spanish dialogue to understand (I think I did write a tiny bit of Spanish dialogue in We’re Not Here To Get Involved In Personal Problems). But I would really want a more fluent speaker to look it over if I were doing any significant amount.
19. First fandom you wrote for? The X-Files, really, if you don’t count that middle school Victoria Holt romance novel sequel I wrote for English class.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? I’m going to choose three, okay? Is that egotistical? I’m sorry if so. I’ve always really liked Jackson Van De Kamp’s Not-So-Final Repose. It’s not perfect, but it’s quirky and fantastical and sentimental and has a special place in my heart. It’s also more like a play, which is probably one of the genres my writing is most influenced by. I also really like The Boy on the Beach, which took a year to write and involved so, so much research, which was fun and a positive experience. Finally, I like How To Eat Pleasant Holiday Meals With Co-Workers, which was a prompt for a holiday exchange (early MSR Thanksgiving) that I expanded into a series of Thanksgivings over the years. I ended up really enjoying imagining each of those Thanksgivings, especially the last one. That last one is my forever post-revival headcanon now lol.
Would anyone like to do this? I'm going to tag @mollybecameanengineer if she hasn't yet, but anyone should.

The next story in the sentence prompt- “daydreaming about me?” is ready. This one was very fun to write. Hope you enjoy! ❤️
Friday Night at Jose’s
Dinner, drinks, and some flirting is the perfect way to end a long week.
Tumblr media

Mulder walked into Jose’s, the Mexican restaurant Scully had suggested for dinner, and he drew in a deep breath. His stomach growled as the aroma of fajitas and many spices caused his mouth to water.
He spotted her across the room, a large margarita on the table in front of her as she stared absentmindedly ahead of her. Grinning, he made his way to the table, his stomach growling once again.
“Hey,” he said as he walked up beside her and sat down. She jumped and he chuckled. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“You didn’t. Just… startled me I suppose.”
“Daydreaming about me?” he teased and she rolled her eyes.
“It’s six thirty,” she said, pushing her margarita toward him, offering him a drink.
“And?” he asked, taking a long drink from the neon green straw. “Phew… did you ask for extra tequila?” He coughed, but took another sip before pushing it back to her, shaking his head. “Thanks. That’s all I need.”
“Such a lightweight,” she teased, taking a long drink as she stared at him and he shrugged with a smile.
“Did you order?”
“Just this. Thought I’d wait to see if you wanted to share something.” She twirled the straw in her drink and licked her lips. He tried not to stare, but she saw and raised her eyebrows.
“I’m not sharing a salad,” he said, knowing he had been caught and choosing not to bring attention to it. “Unless it includes steak and comes with tortillas.”
“So… like a taco or a burrito?” she asked with a roll of her eyes.
“Exactly,” he said and she laughed quietly before taking another drink.
“And no I wasn’t.”
“You weren’t what?” he asked. “Talking about salad?”
“No,” she said with a snort as she laughed again. “Well, that or what you asked earlier.”
“What did I ask earlier?” he asked, frowning at her in confusion.
“Aww… memory loss. That old age catching up to you?” she asked, biting her bottom lip as she tried not to smile.
“Shut up,” he said and she shrugged, her eyes closing briefly as she raised her eyebrows. Reaching for a menu on the table, he opened it and held it out, squinting before bringing it closer.
“Do you want to borrow my glasses?” she asked and he looked up, staring at her with narrowed eyes. “Mulder, I’m right here. Can you see me?”
“Shut up,” he said as he laughed and she grinned before taking another drink. He shook his head as he looked back at the menu.
“Fajita platter? Chips and guacamole? And a small Mexican salad?” he asked and he heard her hum in agreement. “You want another drink?”
“Not yet, but maybe in a bit.”
A waiter came by a couple of minutes later and took their order, smiling at Scully as she stirred her drink and smiled back, almost languidly.
Oh. She was definitely feeling buzzed.
“How’s your drink?”
“Really good,” she said, looking at him with the same smile.
“I can tell.”
“Hmm.”
“So,” he said, smiling at her as he leaned a little closer. A buzzed, or drunk, Scully was always fun to behold. “What was it you were saying earlier? That you weren’t talking about something?”
She stared at him, blinking her eyes slowly and then shaking her head.
“What?” she asked and he grinned.
“You said you weren’t doing or talking about something that I said earlier.”
“What?” she asked again and he shook his head solemnly.
“You’re having memory loss, aren’t you? It’s you, but you're projecting your own problems onto me.”
“No. You’re just speaking in riddles. You don’t make sense.”
“Hmm,” he hummed with a smile, watching her stir the straw around in her nearly empty glass.
“Oh, wait. I know now. I remember.”
“Let’s hear it.”
“When you arrived, you asked me if I was daydreaming about you.”
“Which you obviously were,” he said with a shrug and she snorted again, looking at him with slightly glassy eyes.
“No, I wasn’t. And even if I was, it’s nearly seven now.”
He frowned, but then he realized what she was saying and he smiled.
“And by your logic, it wouldn’t be daydreaming because it’s night time. Or evening,” he said and she snapped her fingers and pointed at him as he laughed again. “Well… it’s hard to argue with such sound logic.”
“Not to mention, I wasn’t thinking about you before you arrived.”
“Do they include steak knives with the silverware?” he asked, unrolling the napkin and sighing with disappointment. “I’ll have to ask them for one to let you do the job properly. Right in the heart. Here specifically.” He tapped his chest and she put her fingers to her mouth to hide her smile. “Make sure you get me right here when you physically wound me just as your words have done emotionally.”
“But then our meal would be interrupted. The cops would need to get involved. We’d have to make a statement… It’s just too much to deal with tonight.” She shrugged and as he smiled, his finger still on his chest.
“Well, just know that it was right here, should you want to revisit it later.”
“Yeah. It would actually be better to do it without numerous witnesses.”
He laughed as she looked around with a nod, scoping out the room. The waiter arrived with the salad and set it in the middle of the table. As he walked away, Scully pulled it toward her, sliding her margarita to Mulder.
“Another?” he asked.
“After the salad. That first one is doing the job quite nicely. You can finish it if you’d like.”
“Thanks,” he said. “Nothing like “second drink” margarita.”
She smiled at his Office reference and he finished the drink as she ate the salad, offering him a few bites, which he accepted happily, despite his previous protests of wanting one.
Their meal arrived not long after, along with another margarita and glasses of water . She licked her lips appreciatively as she took a sip, humming as she wiggled in her seat. He smiled as he watched her begin to build her fajita, knowing the exact order in which she would do it.
As the meal ended, he offered to take her home, seeing as how she was not in any fit condition to drive. She accepted, smiling at him as she stood to use the bathroom before they left. Watching her walk away, a little unsteady on her feet, he laughed quietly.
Driving to her apartment, a place he did not visit as regularly as he would have liked, their separation leaving some things in a gray area, she hummed along with the radio. Rolling her window down despite the chill in the air, she drew in a deep breath.
“I’m a little bit drunk,” she said, her words slurring a bit.
“Are you?” he teased with a chuckle. “I hadn’t noticed.”
“Liar. You notice everything.”
“Like the fact that you were daydreaming, or evening dreaming, about me?”
“Hmm,” she hummed, but offered no further comment and he grinned as he made a left toward her apartment.
He pulled up and parked in one of the empty visitor spots and looked over at her. Her eyes were closed and he would have thought she was asleep, but he knew by her breathing that she was awake.
“Do you want me to walk you in?” he asked and her eyes opened slowly.
“Naaaaah,” she drawled. “I’m good. Thanks for the ride.”
“Anytime.”
She sighed as she unbuckled her seatbelt and gathered her things. Glancing at him, she smiled and opened the door.
“Goodnight, Mulder,” she said and he nodded.
“Goodnight, Scully.”
“It’s Friday. Let’s stay out of trouble until Monday, yeah? Let me sleep in tomorrow?”
“Sure. I’ll see what I can do,” he said, smiling at her.
“Thanks. I appreciate it.” She squeezed his forearm and then got out of the car, shivering as she closed the door.
She walked in front of the car towards the stairs and then turned around, walking back to his side of the car.
“Yes?” he asked as he rolled the window down.
“Do you think that daydreams only apply to things you’ve not yet had? Like winning the lottery? Or a trip you’ve yet to take? Things you’ve not experienced, but may want to someday?”
“Only? Never would I think that’s the only type of daydream a person can or should have. A daydream represents something you want, wish you could have, or know you will have, but it’s not yet come to fruition. Daydreams are different from sleeping dreams as we are in control of them. Therefore, in my opinion, they hold more weight than a dream we have while sleeping. We are active participants during the day.”
“And not just with dreams, as that’s when we are active,” she said, her eyes closed and eyebrows raised.
“True,” he agreed with a smile, his eyes traveling across her face. Her mascara was smudged under one eye and he wished he could cup her face in his hands and smooth it away as he had done countless times in the past.
“I think you’re right,” she said, opening her eyes and focusing on him. “It’s good to have daydreams about what could be, even if you may have had it before.”
“Yeah,” he said quietly as they both stared at one another.
“Well, goodnight again,” she said, stepping back from the car and nodding as she scrunched her chin.
“And to you,” he replied.
“Behave,” she said.
“Let you sleep in. I got it,” he said with a small chuckle.
“Bye.”
“Bye, Scully.”
He watched her walk inside as he let out a deep breath, counting to sixty before he started the car and drove away.
“New message from Scully,” was heard through the speakers a minute later, his phone lighting up on its holder.
He grinned as he waited for it to be read, imagining her taking her shoes off by the door and stumbling to the couch, sitting down tiredly upon it with a sigh.
“It’s remotely plausible to consider that I may daydream about you from time to time.”
Laughing loudly, he slapped the steering wheel as he pulled up to a stoplight. He shook his head and laughed again, picturing her smile as she sent that message.
“Ahh, Scully,” he said, smiling as the light turned green and he continued on his way.
He knew by the time he got home, perhaps before he even drove too much further, she would be asleep on the couch, a blanket wrapped snugly around her.
“Message Scully,” he said.
“What do you want the message to say?”
“More than plausible,” he said, still smiling.
“It reads more than plausible. Send it to Scully?”
“Yes,” he said.
“Done.”
“Good,” he replied with a nod. “Good.”
He smiled nearly the entire drive home.

Writing patterns
Thanks for the tags @randomfoggytiger !!
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
I really have a pattern for MSR Revival era and their family, Emily lived and Will was raised by them.
1. 60th Birthday of G-Woman
Mulder give scully a nice evening outside and a precious gift, they dance all night. It’s a romantic fic. Mention of William
2. Emily today
Emily mulder scully is doing her residency in D.C. she has her own life, she has a situation-ship with an older men. Mulder and scully reminiscing about scully life at 29. William is in college having the time of his life.
3. 4 am. Really????
AU problematic teenage William with Scully and Mulder. Will gets drunk
4. She could be
Basically Scully and Mulder imagine what would be Emily's life if she had lived, during a cozy night in the unremarkable house. (After revival with no baby)
5. Tooms 2023
Agents Miller and Einstein are now in charge of the x files since Mulder and Scully retired. Scully is working at the hospital and Mulder is a stay at home daddy for their little girl. William and Emily make appearances. Tooms came back. (Not finished) 2 chapters
6. That old picture
Not so distant future grown ups Emily (30’s) and Will (late 20’s) discover a picture of their parents when they were young and after pestering them Mulder told the story behind the picture.
7. Mulder watches Scully doing her endless skin care night routine and tease her about it.
I could see the pattern, I also think that all of them could be a series but some works have details that differ from each other 🥺
@today-in-fic
You can find them here ☺️☺️☺️ and number 7 is in the other link

Did you see Chris Carter's latest interview? He's basically pretending that TXF wasn't cancelled after season 11 because of low ratings and Gillian's departure, but because he "needed time off" and "wanted to go surfing". No wonder Gillian lost patience with him. The amount of times he and David refused to acknowledge Gillian's displeasure at the way the series ended and how she was basically cajoled by them to keep doing more episodes. Mind you, it must be a real slap in the face to Carter that Gillian has refused to do any more XF's with him as showrunner, but she isn't ruling out appearing in Coogler's reboot if she's asked.
This one? That sounds so strange. Did Fox really want to make more? Let alone the Gillian said no erasure.
I don't know what David has to do with any of this. He and Gillian are separate people and they can disagree on things. In another interview CC said he and Gillian have talked. We can hold our own grudges regarding how the revival ended but we cannot hold theirs.
Gillian has said before she'd consider thinking about it if the show was written and run by someone else. Which is the case with the reboot.
