Idk if this is silly, but when I see people in their early twenties who are desperate to find their “person” and “start their life” in that way I just want to shake them and be like oooomg shut up you have so much fucking time and please enjoy every moment you can have for yourself without another person even in the picture. Please just learn about yourself without enmeshing yourself with someone else and make yourself the biggest priority of all!! There is way too much emphasis on needing to quickly find “the one” (which is a stupid concept anyway when there are 8 billion fucking people on the planet and people who could love you are everywhere) and I hate how it’s like societally ingrained in us.

the upside of struggles pt 1
an: this is most definitely a self indulgent fic so ignore this if its bad, I was inspired by a tiktok of him telling some people to go back to their seats and I could only imagine how absolutely mortified I would've been if I was called out like that
harry styles x fem!reader
warnings: mentions of anxiety and mental illness, loneliness, cursing maybe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
taking deep breaths you make your way to your seat. it’s 7:45 on the night of harry styles’ first show at msg in New York City. this was a big triumph for you.  not only going to your first concert but also going alone. you didn’t really have too many friends, always a shy person, stuck to yourself and that was okay with you.  fear of judgement getting the best of you, the only escape being harry and his music.  you’re a born New Yorker, always living there just not always in the city but once you got to college the city was the place for you, just close enough to get home without being too close.  things were going well... until they weren't. going back for your last year as a 22 year old you'd never experienced this type of anxiety. you went back to square one after making progress with your anxiety years prior and decided to take a year off. as a 22 year old you made priorities in yourself instead of school for the first time.  started in therapy and started a job at a preschool.  something so calming about working with kids infants to three years old, never having a care in the world, you wished you could go back to those days.  you’ve certainly made a lot of progress in two.. almost three months, the ability to have a full time job unthinkable at the beginning of this mental health journey but it was still something you struggled with daily.  a big step was going to love on tour. it was your first ever concert. crowds make you nervous, you were going alone, and loud noises used to be a big issue for you. this was a real test for you but it was worth it for harry.  you made it to your seat, you knew you couldn't handle pit but you ended up getting lower bowl first row so harry could definitely see you and you could enjoy the concert while sitting down.  Jenny lewis was just starting and the speaker definitely started making you nervous. but you made it through until sweet thang started playing. the countless videos and livestreams of this opening that you've seen was happening in real time right in front of you. you heard the opening of golden and saw the band walk on stage, you saw harry come up from the floor, you saw the floor littered with moon shaped lights during only angel, watched Mitch walk the catwalk during she, made it while surprisingly only tearing up during falling, and then it started to go downhill.  during the sign portion of the show everything became very real, you were very aware of where you were, how many people you were with, and how hot and loud it was.  derealization was hitting, imagining watching yourself out of your body and searching for the nearest escape route was a priority. harry announced the 15 minutes dancing section of the show which consisted of canyon moon, tpwk, and what makes you beautiful. the floor was shaking, you were shaking, and beginning to hyperventilate. the mask you were wearing wasn’t helping and you were beginning to panic. you had to get out of there. you got up with your bag and made your way up the stairs. however, harry happened to look and as he likes to do playfully call you out... pointing at you and speaking over the mic “back to your seat, back to your seat” your breathing increased even more, looking back over your shoulder with tears building in your eyes and harry could tell something was wrong. you ran as fast as you could up those stairs, fight or flight response kicking in.  harry mentioned you to security feeling so bad for calling you out like that when something was clearly wrong. you made your way outside. positive you wouldn't be able to go back in again.  needing the fresh air and a rest you sat down on the sidewalk to catch your breath and keep your tears at bay.  the train ride back home was daunting. knowing that it would be an hour without a way out but you had to do your best. you felt like shit you really did. you’ve been waiting for this night for as long as you've been a fan and you let your anxiety get the best of you. disappointed in yourself you round the city corner of msg and make your way down the dirty stairs of penn station and eventually get on your train, disappointed, humiliated, and mortified.
BILL SKARSGARD, 24, CIS-MALE, HE/HIM ⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, SILAS PIETERSE! according to their records, they’re a THIRD year, specializing in “MACGYVER” SURVIVAL SKILLS & NAVIGATION; and they DID NOT go to a spy prep high school. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of (the sound of motorcycles passing, grease stained hands, veins made prominent, a scar under his right eyebrow, lipstick on his collar). when it’s the (libra)’s birthday on 10/22/1995, they always request their REUBEN SANDWICH from the school’s chefs. looks like they’re well on their way to graduation. ⌿ kara, 26, she/her, est
+ south jersey had its charms. or rather, it didn’t. but it had silas. and silas had charm. learned charm. so as far as south jersey was concerned, it had that going for it. + his upbringing felt more like that of a tv characters’ than a real life person’s. on the tv it’s interesting and fascinating and fun and cool and different. in real life it’s just outlandish and provocative  and unsafe and questionable. + si’s dad picked up ladies around him since the time he was an infant. he’d been around many scenes he probably shouldn’t have been involving the use of, trade of, and sales of sex and drugs. + growing up poor means not having tools like therapy to identify your trauma. + even if he or his family could afford therapy, it wasn’t something that would be prioritized. things like that were frowned upon in silas’ world. men were told to toughen up and tough it out. so he did. + on the bright side, though also unconventional, silas grew up around motorcycles. he’s pretty sure that common thread between he and his dad saved both their lives. they didn’t talk much unless it was about business or roughriders. + the complete opposite of his everyday world is his mother’s everyday world. she married up, moved to a nicer part of jersey, lived in a nice home, one with stairs. yeah, one level homes are nice, but stairs meant another level, it meant the house was bigger and the bigger the house the better your finances look to the outside world and therefore your status went up with it. + she tried to get silas to go stay with her, go to school in her district, but he politely declined, knowing that the roughhouse riders would have something to say about it if he did. + pride came with biker gangs. they were proud to wear their leather jackets with the fancy jackets on the back. it was the one thing they would splurge on. everyone pitched in. + when you’re family, you’re family, which meant that silas was allowed to join the biker gang young. obviously he couldn’t spend all of his time with them being a kid and having school and whatnot, but he would go with his dad every sunday. he looked forward to it every single week. + initiation took a toll on silas’ mental health and stability, made him question his morals and also left him with a black eye to match his jacket. if you look closely, there’s a scar below his right eyebrow from the ring of the fist that hit him. + stella, head of the roughhouse™, took an interest in silas. he was fulfilling all the duties that came with being the newest initiated member of the roughhouse™, sure, but he didn’t remember hearing about anyone else going to stella’s. especially not inside of stella’s. the two talked like he hadn’t with the others, hadn’t with... anyone. he considered her as more than just a leader, but maybe even his best friend, his family. + inside of stella’s is where silas met addison nudge ritter. at first, silas thought she was just “stella’s grand daughter,” but he was wrong. nudge became his best friend. his soft spot. they quickly begin sharing every single one of their days together. he takes her to his mother’s and they make fun of the fancy people in the area while going home to heating in the winter and home cooked meals at a fancy set dining room table. it took a long time for him to open up to nudge about that part of his life and he trusts her to keep it a secret from the rest of the gang. except for with momma stella because whether nudge knew or not, stella was bound to. she was omnipotent that way. + refusing help from his mother, silas fell into the same routine as his father, doing all of the same things that he did, but this time not in front of a little kid. he manipulated others, he satiated his needs by sleeping around but never spending the night, he took every opportunity to make money, illegal or not, and get this: it was always illegal. + the kinds of jobs people need to turn to the roughhouse for are not the kinds you can hire just anyone for. so the roughhouse slummed it with certain jobs and upped the keeps in others. they had a reputation in south jersey and it was as tough as the brooding look silas was taught to wear at a young age. + these jobs ranged from distributing drugs, transporting them, beating people up, leaving them unconscious in certain areas to frame people, and eventually when there were living, breathing people left half dead at silas’ hands, he ended up in blackthorne, which he found to be more of a new age government prison sentence than a university experience. + silas does as he’s told when he’s told to do it and next thing he knows he’s being rewarded kinda by going to gallagher. + the real reward is running into nudge again. they pick up right where they left off. only this time, there’s a boyfriend on her end and a secret on his. did he need the boyfriend’s approval to get in with nudge or did the boyfriend need silas’ approval to stay with her ? he hoped neither were true because while he wasn’t a good judge of character, a good judge of character probably wouldn’t keep silas around, especially not a spy that could look into silas’ past and find out all of the things he’s done, including what landed him in blackthorne. + what happened pre-blackthorne remains in a metaphorical vault, locked up to keep himself safe, others safe and because if he admits it happened, it’ll fuck him up for good. + silas is hanging on by a thread as is. he’s having sex and punching things just to feel things. now he has to pick a major and redefine his biggest life regret as a win, but as good of a liar as he might be to others, he’s not sure he can keep up the charade with himself but what would happen if it all fell apart and he came unraveling at the seams ? + at the very least, silas knows his alibi is rock solid. + he’d always enjoyed movies growing up, but seeing movies was a luxury that his father’s lifestyle didn’t offer them, so movies in theaters were few and far between until his mother married again and into a richer situation. + whenever he couldn’t hang out with nudge, he’d always say he was seeing a movie. to make up for it, he would take her to the movies with him at least once a month or every couple months, proof of his being a movie buff. + even when he was in a job rather than a movie theater, he would pick a movie, buy a ticket and read a synopsis to give nudge later. it felt worthwhile, having something solid to bring to court should he ever need it. plus, his jobs always paid enough to cover that ticket and then some.  + in this fashion, silas began becoming a collector of sorts. a collector of movie knowledge and a collector of tickets. he kept every stub. every single one. because you never know how far down the line things will get brought back up. he needed proof of where he was and when. his tickets provided him that security. + so he took it a step further and kept every ticket. the ones that were not cover ups, too. the ones for concerts. the ones for carnivals. ok, to be fair it was pretty small for a “collection” and some of them were not bought by him, but maybe by females attempting to buy his attention with experience.  + silas always found it a bit ironic that the word “admit” was on some types of tickets as if trying to heed a confession out of him. “admit one.” he’d consider the deed done, having admitted just one thing, if he were to ever come clean to nudge about what happened, or rather, to anyone.
PoTA: Test The Relationship
Hi guys! So this just came to me a couple of days ago and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head so I wrote it out.
Basically, it’s a PoTA-based relationship test. The idea is you imagine your favorite PoTA characters/PoTA shippings (canon or not) in these scenarios and, based on their personalities, backgrounds and actions in the books and movies, imagine what they might think, say or do in them. These scenarios can also be used to explore your PoTA OC’s character and expand on their personality and relationships.
Some of the scenarios are based off of things that happened in the movies and books and by the actions of the characters (both the good guys and the bad guys) and some are real-life based and others don’t follow the PoTA mold at all (so some are serious, some are romantic/comfort, and some are just random and silly).
Types of couple that can be used in these scenarios:
Canon
Made-Up Shippings
OC Shippings/relations
Crack Couples
Ape x Human
Ape x Ape
Human x Human
OC x Canon
OC x OC
Gay or Straight Shippings
Literally anything you want!
Subjects included in (some of these) these scenarios:
Character Death
Divorce/Breakup
Government Corruption/Propaganda
PTSD/Past Trauma
Self Harm/Suicidal Thoughts or Actions
Abuse
Drug Addictions
Alcoholism
Cancer/Serious and/or Fatal Illness
Miscarriage/Infant Death
Adoption
Betrayal
Seperation
Depression/Anger problems
Birth Defects/Disability
Murder/Attempted Murder
Homophobia/Harassment/Bullying
Oppression
Ape-Based Polygamy (where they have multiple mates)
If any of these subjects trigger you or make you uncomfortable, don’t read the scenario and don’t do them! I could personally direct you to the scenarios that DON’T have that particular subject but please be aware that a good 80% of these scenarios cover these things and the whole point of them is to test how the characters handle them and the relationship of the said couple. It’s all meant PURELY for fiction and character exploration, not in any way shape or form meant to encourage or glamorize these subjects. As a precaution, I may repost this on my DA incase this is taken down.
PoTA Movies/Books that (some of) these scenarios are inspired by:
Rise
Dawn
War
Firestorm
Revelations
Original PoTA Movies
Tim Burton’s Remake
While these scenarios were made up based off of the PoTA universe, some of them CAN be used for other franchises you’re interested in. The scenarios are primarily romance-based but there are a few that are based on friendships, parent to child relations, and spouse to in-laws.
The scenarios are all open ended. You choose the couple/the characters in them (the “you” refers to the character you chose to be that role), how far it goes and how it ends (This ______ means fill in the blank! LOL). You can use these scenarios as prompts for drawing, one-shots, discussions, or role-plays.
This is not a contest or a challenge! If anything it’s just something I made up for fun and maybe others may find fun in it to. There’s 100 scenarios on this list but you don’t have to do ALL of them if your don’t want to!
Sorry that my description has taken up more room than I thought it would but have fun! Happy character exploration and relationship testing! XD
1 - 10: Falling in love
1) You have been captured by apes/cruel humans. You just met a/another ape/primitive human. Is it love at first sight?
2) You see your companion being abused/tortured/whipped by your captors. Do you intervene?
3) Your companion makes a flower crown for you. How does this make you feel? Do you make one for them?
4) You’re in love. However, the person you love will never love you back due to your species/different opinions on humans. What is it about them that you love so much?
5) You and your companion are not the same species (one is ape and the other is human) but you have feelings for them. Do you hide it? Do they feel the same?
6) You want to impress your companion by________. It goes horribly wrong and you end up embarrassing yourself. Do you laugh it off? Do you hide your head in shame?
7) You want to give your companion a gift. After much consideration, you decide the best gift would be________. How do they react to the gift?
8) You’re about to be killed by______. Your companion saves your life and in doing so, gets hurt themselves. What do you do?
9) Your companion suddenly disappears as you’re traveling. Do you search for them? Or go get help?
10) You and your companion are alone together. You catch each others eyes and gaze at one another. Your heart is pounding. Do you kiss them? Do they kiss back?
11 - 20: Something Cute
11) You feel like making cookies. You invite your love to join you. How do you know they aren’t going to eat all the cookie dough first?
12) It’s your love’s birthday. It’s as easy to celebrate these things anymore, but you think you can make it work. What do you get for them? Do you attempt to bake a cake?
13) Halloween is coming up. Your love has never celebrated the holiday. Do you dress up in costumes? Go Trick or Treating/eat candy? Watch horror movies and stay up all night?
14) You and the group you’re in are all bored. You decide to play Truth or Dare. You’re group includes apes and humans, some having done wrong in the past and others had gone from friends, to enemies, to ‘not really friends but we can tolerate each other now’ kind of relationship. What can go wrong? And what is the craziest dare you can think of?
15) It’s summer! You decide to take your love on an adventure. Where do you go?
16) You feel lonely but your companion can’t talk. Do you try to teach them how to communicate?
17) Apes can’t swim. Yet, they see you playing in shallow water. The water isn’t deep and only goes up to your waist at most. Do you invite them in? Do you all end up having a splash-fight?
18) It’s Friday night. That means no council meetings, no hunting, no fighting, no war, no killing, no nothing. You and your human and ape friends know what that means…Party time!!! During the party, you notice your love interest is there. Do you ‘play it cool’ and approach them? Or do you keep rocking out with your friends?
19) Your love is feeling blue. It doesn’t appear to be anything serious, but you don’t like it. What do you do to cheer them up?
20) Your love is having trouble sleeping. You decide to do something sweet and silly for them! Do you sing them a lullaby? Read/tell a bedtime story? Or do you do something else entirely?
21 - 30: Opening Up
21) Your love has always been secretive and extremely hateful towards (other) humans. One night, you confront them about it. Are you prepared to hear about the abuse and torture your love was subjected to?
22) You came from another planet/the past. Everyone you’ve ever known, your friends and your family, are gone. Leaving you homesick for them. You feel all alone in this new, strange world with seemingly no one to talk to or no one who cares. Still, not all apes in this world are ‘human haters’ and the humans here are good listeners. What’s the harm in seeking company from them?
23) Being locked in a cage for so many years does things to a person. It caused you to have depression and anxiety problems, and caused you to fear humans as well as hate them. It’s hard to talk about these things, even if you weren’t the only one to experience it. Sometimes you cry yourself to sleep, thinking about it. One day, another ape approaches you and asks if you’re ok. Do you let them in? Let them be the one to free you from your cage?
24) Your love suffers from PTSD, due to all the abuse and trauma they’ve endured. They have good days and bad days, but it’s never easy. All you can do is be there for them and help them in any way you can. What happens when a particularly bad flashback leaves your love in tears and you holding them as well as crying with them?
25) Your love tells you a secret. A secret so shocking that, if it ever came to light, it could ruin your love’s life. But keeping it a secret is also dangerous, as it threatens their life too. You don’t want to destroy your love’s trust, but there’s no way you can keep this a secret either. What can you do?
26) You lost your parents when you were young. You don’t like talking about it, not even to your own love. What happens when they find an old picture of you and your parents? Do you tell them how you lost them?
27) You have been made to do horrible things. Things that you never want to remember or speak of again. But one day, something from your past resurfaces and your love demands explanation. Do you lie to protect them from the truth? Or tell them everything?
28) There are certain subjects your love noticeably avoids. Mostly its small things: handling knives, refusing to look at blood, covering their ears at loud noises. You don’t think anything of it until one day…What happens that makes you rethink this behavior? Do you try to find out the source of these problems?
29) Ape Law has always been flaky at best. You never gave it much thought and preferred to live about your daily life as if nothing is happening around you at all. Trouble is, your spouse works very closely with Dr. Zaius and the orangutans. It’s normally uneventful, but lately weird things have been occurring in the village and your spouse is either denying that it’s happening or trying to hide it. You’ve never been interested in this subject before, but you cannot ignore that somethings not right. What is your spouse hiding? What do you do to find out what it is?
30) You decide it’s time to profess your feelings to your love and take the step from friends, to lovers. How do you do it?
31 - 40: Marriage
31) You and your partner love each other. You live together, eat and sleep and even go out in the forest and Ape Village together. You want to ask the big question, but you’re so nervous of what the answer will be that you keep putting it off. Your partner finally notices and asks about it. What do you do?
32) You and your partner have been through a lot. You’ve survived a virus, dangerous humans, and your spouse has survived abuse and neglect by them. You have your differences and neither of you are perfect, but you love each other all the same. If they were to ask you to marry them, would you say yes?
33) Despite everything that you have done, your partner still loves you and lets you know that everyday. As much as you feel grateful for them, you can’t help but feel guilty for all you put your partner through during the war and the events leading up to it. You secretly wonder if they also resent you for what you did, like everyone else. So how do you feel when your partner, despite all your mistakes, asks your hand in marriage?
34) It was obvious for years that you two were a couple. The entire village knew of it. Not even Dr. Zaius bats an eye when you two announce your engagement. Problem is you have friends who are apes who you want to invite, but you also have human friends too…This wedding is going to be very interesting.
35) You are ape and your partner is human. Your love is forbidden, and seen as a betrayal to many with both sides outcasting you. Fed up with the constant harassment, your partner decides to leave the village and asks you to go with him-as his spouse. This is a hard choice to make. There’s not much left for you if you stay but leaving would mean you’d have to leave your home, your family and all you’ve ever known behind. Will you say yes and go with him? Or will you stay in the village with a ruined reputation?
36) Due to war, you and your spouse have to be separated. The timing is horrible as you have just gotten married and were just about to settle in as spouse and spouse. You talk to each other as often as you can, but it’s just not the same. Can your marriage survive this long-distance relationship?
37) Being an outcast by your own people is hard. Everyday, you put on a brave face and tell your spouse that you’re ok but they know when you’re lying. They know it’s unfair and awful how the village treats you just because of your species. You think it’s just you who they oppress, but it turns out your spouse is also a target. How does it effect your relationship?
38) Some apes have multiple spouses. There are no laws against it and it isn’t seen as cheating or anything wrong. Still, you weren’t raised with it. Your father only had one spouse, and that was what you wanted. One, and only one, spouse. But you have fallen in love with another ape too. You know you won’t be judged for having two spouses and your current spouse wouldn’t  mind either, but do you really want this? Or do you ignore it and stick with what you’ve originally wanted?
39) Your parents are cruel to your spouse. They don’t accept them and constantly tell you that you should leave them. Your in-laws (your spouse’s parents) are the most nicest, most caring people you’ve ever met and you are honored to be part of their family but it also makes you feel horrible about your own parents behavior. On your wedding day, they ruin it by throwing _________  at your spouse and yells at them. This is the last straw. What do you do?
40) It’s your wedding day. The day where fantasy and day dream become reality, and it’s almost mystical. Straight from a storybook. As you and your spouse hold each other, is it everything you’ve ever dreamed of?
41 - 50: Building A Family
41) You want to have kids but your spouse doesn’t want to talk about it. The subject appears to make them angry and depressed. One night, you decide you have to ask. Would you be prepared for what you hear?
42) You and your spouse are unable to have children. One day, you find an abandoned child while at the Market Place. This child is malnourished and appears hungry. Would you Adopt this child? How would your spouse feel?
43) You and your spouse never thought having children together was possible but it turns out, your spouse is pregnant! Are you shocked? Scared? Happy? What about your spouse?
44) Your child is an outcast, due to you and your spouse being a human-ape couple/past choices made by you or your spouse. One day, your child asks what an ‘abomination’ is. What do you tell them?
45) You and your spouse are currently wanted fugitives and your child is being hunted. If you are captured, your child will be murdered. The only way to protect them is to give up your child and then you and your spouse will have to flee. Who do you leave your child with? Do you fully trust them?
46) You and your friends aren’t related by blood, but you are the closest thing to family that you have. You’re all different, some are apes and some are human, but you stick together as if you were all brothers and sisters and you never let anyone, human or apes, hurt you. How far does it go?
47) You and your spouse find out that your child has a birth defect/has health problems. In a post-apocalyptic world, not much can be done to help your child live a normal life. There is also a possibility your child may die. How do you and your spouse cope with this?
48) You now have two children. As you and your spouse watch them play, do you two worry about their futures? More specifically, if they’d be accepted as equals by the apes and by humans?
49) Your spouse is pregnant and it hasn’t been easy. As you talk about it together, you find that both of you are afraid. Not just for weather or not your spouse and the baby will survive the birth, but also the child’s future as a whole. You try to be strong for your spouse, but can you be strong for yourself too?
50) Your spouse is in labor, and it’s worse than you imagined. You’re scared but you’re more concerned for your spouse than anything else. The baby is finally born. How is your spouse? Are they going to be ok? But then, as you look at your child for the first time, what are you feeling?
51 - 60: Problems
51) Your spouse has a history of treachery, deceit, murder, attempted murder and manipulation and is outcasted and disliked by many in the colony. It has also put a strain on your relationship, as it makes it hard to fully trust them. Do you ever talk it out with your spouse? Does your spouse regret their past actions?
52) You do not wish harm on humans, but your spouse does. Its to the point where your spouse wants to kill them all. You love your spouse, but you do not like where this is going. Do you try to reason with them?
53) War has taken it’s toll on your spouse. They no longer seem as confident and powerful as they used to be. In fact, your spouse looks like they’re about to crumble and break before your eyes. One night, they do. They need you to be their strength for the night. How strong can you be for them?
54) You drink your pain away with alcohol. It’s not healthy, but it’s the only thing that gives you peace. You know your spouse hates it, but you’re honestly sick of their nagging. They’ll never understand how bad it hurts. How bad everything hurts…But would you give them the chance?
55) Old mistakes from the past and continued bitterness over them has made their way into your marriage. Now you and your spouse fight constantly, to the point of yelling and shouting at each other, only to end with one of you leaving and slamming the door behind them and the other to go bed to scream into a pillow. Why is this happening? And how can you and your spouse fix it?
56) Your spouse finds out that someone at work has been mistreating you and they are not happy about it. One day, they show at your work place and beats up the guy that had been bullying you. Did you know it was coming? Were you shocked to see it happen?
57) You decide to do a harmless, non-aggravating, prank on your spouse. The prank you have in mind is suppose to be confusing rather than to make it’s victim angry and upset or cause damage. One of those ‘wholesome and innocent’ pranks. You pull the prank and-!…It’s not your spouse you’ve just pranked…It’s your spouse’s mother!!! How do you get out of this awkward situation?!
58) Your spouse has an awful fear of the dark. It’s so bad that they need a nightlight, something to hold and you to be in the bed with them before they fall asleep. One night, they wake you up and say they think someone/something is inside the house/cave. It could be nothing, but do you really want to take that chance?
59) Your child has a friend who is a bad influence on them. This friend is shady, secretive and always has an answer to everything. You have a bad feeling about them but no evidence to prove anything. You talk it out with your spouse and they too feel something isn’t right with this friend. Then one day your child comes home, badly beaten and bleeding. When it becomes known that the friend did it, you decide then and there that you are going to make them pay for this. What do you do?
60) Homosexuality is not uncommon in Ape Society. In fact, it’s almost as common as heterosexuality. You are perfectly fine with this, as some of your ape friends are married to other apes who are the same gender, however you also have human friends find it ‘unnatural’ or ‘disgusting’ or ‘sinful’. You have been very careful to avoid those friends and keeping them from meeting your ape friends but of course, they eventually find each other. The ignorant friends realize they are looking at two male apes kissing and start harassing them, calling them horrible names right in front of you. That’s it, any feeling of friendship you had with these people dies at that moment. How do you intervene? Do you use just words to stop them or do you have to use physical force?
61 - 70: It’s A Matter of Life and Death
61) Your spouse has a disease that could kill them. Thankfully, there is a cure that can save them, but this treatment comes with serious consequences. Would you save your spouse’s life? Do you value their life enough to make sacrifices?
62) Colonel McCullough has kidnapped your spouse! Problem is, he also has the entire colony in the base too! Do you save your spouse first? Or your people?
63) Your spouse and your child are both in serious danger, having been kidnapped by the enemy and are now about to be killed by them/inflicted with a fatal illness. Despite your best efforts, you could only save one of them but not the other. Who do you save? The love of your life? Or your child?
64) Your spouse is an experiment in a laboratory. Every second they are in that cage, their life is at risk. You need a plan but it’s hard to think of one when there’s so little time. What are you feeling? How do you try to rescue them?
65) Your spouse has been acting strange lately. You try to ask them what’s wrong but they wouldn’t say. One night, you catch them with a blade in their hand. You stop them just in time but it leaves you shaking as you now know your spouse has been harming themselves and may have suicidal thoughts. What goes through your mind as you realize this?
66) Your spouse is an addict. One day, you find them passed out and not breathing. You rush to get help, but is it enough to save them? Is it too late?
67) The village has deemed your spouse to be a murderer and a traitor. They were banished and is now locked away forever. But your spouse is innocent. You don’t have proof that they didn’t do it, but the Orangutans don’t have evidence against them either. Suspicious, you do some detective work of your own. No one believes you and Dr. Zaius is determined to silence  you, but you don’t care. You’d stop at nothing to save your spouse’s life. But if your spouse is innocent, who is the actual murderer? And what is Dr. Zaius trying to hide from you?
68) Your in-laws died recently. Your spouse tells you that their parents have told them something about the apes history. Something that should have been buried centuries ago. What did your in-laws tell your spouse? How do you console them?
69) Your spouse had a miscarriage. You take it hard. Everyone knew the pregnancy would be difficult, but you never thought this would happen. Your spouse blames themselves despite you telling them it’s not their fault and you both fall into a deep depression…What now?
70) The forest is on fire and your family is trapped inside! You race through the flames, desperately yelling out their names but their voices seem to come from all directions. The smoke is getting heavier, harder to breathe as the air seem less and less. You refuse to give up, you’re either going to save your family or die trying! Do you get burned? And if you do find your family, which one do you save first?
71 - 80: With or Without You
71) Your spouse has started a war. You always knew they hated humans, but never dreamt they’d actually do this. When you find out that your fellow apes are also being threatened, and some have been killed, you confront your spouse. Do you try to stop them? Or is your life also at risk?
72) You are finally getting revenge for all the pain humans caused you. Sure a couple of apes died on the way and a couple of them refuse to follow you, but you see no problem with it. But then, your spouse shows up and demands you stop it. It’s getting on your nerves, and you decide you need to make another choice. Do you love your spouse enough to spare them? Or would you choose revenge over their life?
73) You don’t know what the heck your spouse is thinking. They’ve taken control over the remainder of the colony and now some are dead and others are held captive. Your spouse is talking about killing the queen and they’re convincing other apes to help carry it out. What do you? Get answers from others? Or reason with your spouse and try to stop them before this goes too far?
74) Your spouse has enslaved the entire ape colony. Even Caesar is locked up and chained, reduced to another slave. You know why this is all happening, but it just seems so wrong. So against everything that you stand for and believe in. The more that happens, the more you hate it. Do you go against your spouse’s back and help the apes? Or do you confront them yourself?
75) Your spouse has gone off to exterminate the human race. You can’t stop them, and you both know it. Their hate has made them mad, to the point of no return. Do you say goodbye then and there? And as they leave, for what feels like the last time, what are you thinking and feeling?
76) Your spouse has been banished by the colony for their crimes. As of right now, you’re the only one who still cares about them. Do you go looking for them to join them and start a new life somewhere else with them? Or are you so angry with what they did that you just want to forget about them?
77) Your spouse has joined the enemy and is now seen as a traitor to the colony. How do you feel when you find this out? Are you angry with them? Or do you plan to try to change their mind?
78) You have a chance to go back home. Back to your own world, where humans rule the world. But do you really want to go? And leave behind your new friends here in this ape planet?   What does your heart say?
79) You want revenge for the murders of your family but your friends are in the way. To you, they are just waisting your time and slowing you down. You know they mean well and they’re worried for you but it doesn’t make you feel any less angry at them. Do you continue to travel with them? Or do you push them away and go down the rhode of vengeance without them?
80) Your spouse is on the verge of curing a disease that has hurt millions of lives and threatens even more, but is it worth it? Finding this cure means using innocent apes as lab rats and playing with nature…One of the victims trapped in all of this is your spouse’s own adoptive child. Not even they are spared from this. You understand why your spouse is doing this and you know their heart is in the right place, but you cannot agree with any of this. Do you try to convince them to stop? Even if this is wrong, how can you tell then to give up something they have worked so hard on?
81 - 90: I’m Sorry
81) You had no choice. Your spouse has become a monster. You didn’t want to do it, but you had to. It was the only way you, your family, your friends and your colony would be safe. You had to kill your own spouse…How did it come to this?
82) Your spouse has sacrificed themselves so you live. You never asked them to do such a thing, but they did and it seems they would have done it even if you begged them not to. Wrecked with survivor’s guilt, all you can do is cry for your brave spouse. If you had known that day would be the last day you’d be with them again, what would you have said?
83) Being an astronaut came with consequences. You have left your spouse and children behind on Earth, your home planet. All you want now is to see them again one more time and tell them how much you love them and how sorry you are for leaving them. If you had the chance to do just that, would you?
84) You took part in creating the virus that’s whipping out the planet. Everyone is blaming the apes for this, but you know that’s not true. It’s your fault, and the fault of Gen-Sys for doing this. You say your sorry as your spouse and children die before your eyes, but there aren’t enough sorries in the world that can save them. How can you live with yourself now?
85) You really did it this time. You are now a traitor to the colony and will never be able to return to them. You have no one to turn to and no where to go. Worse of all, you’ve left your beloved all alone. Abandoned them. That was never part of your plan and never what you wanted, but your spouse is now paying the price for your treachery. If you got to see them again, what would you say to them? Do you think they’d still love you and forgive you?
86) Your actions cost the lives of several in the colony and has hurt many others. What you regret the most is how much it has hurt your spouse. You never talk about it with them but you see the hurt in their eyes. You used to have a loving and trusting relationship with each other, now it just feels like your spouse has given up on you. How can you show them how sorry you are?
87) You are haunted by the faces of the people who have died because of you. There are too many to name, some are ape and some are human, but they all form this mob of angry ghosts wanting revenge for their murders. You may not have killed all of them, but you did cause their deaths. How can you put these demons to rest? In fact, are these ghosts real? Or are they just figments of your imagination created by your own guilt?
88) You had to do the unthinkable. You had to kill your own loved ones and friends to save your species. The virus that threatens to destroy your very existence is everywhere you look. In the faces of the people you kill, in the eyes of your enemies, and even in some of your own ‘pets’. You are meant to save and protect your species…But in doing so, you are also killing them…Who do say your sorry to? To those you kill? To all who oppose you?…Or to yourself?
89) You and your spouse had a fight. It was a over something stupid and small, but it got ugly really fast and now neither of you are talking. Who started this fight? And how do you make it up to each other?
90) You have an anger problem and it’s caused a lot of problems between you and your spouse and you with your children. It gets particularly bad one day when your oldest lies to you about where they had been. You get into a fight with them and, in a rage, you smack them. Your spouse intervenes and starts a yelling match with you too. It ends with your children avoiding you for the rest of the day and your spouse giving you dirty looks. Is this enough for you to admit you have a problem? Why was your oldest child lying about their whereabouts anyway? How do you try to make amends with them and your spouse?
91 - 100: The End
91) Your spouse is dead. Killed by Caesar for their crimes. Despite the chaos that had just happened, and the impending danger caused by your spouse, do you still mourn for them? Do you give yourself a chance to say goodbye?
92) Your spouse has suffered a fatal wound and is about to die. You have just enough time to speak them one last time. You don’t want them to go and leave you, but there’s nothing you can do. What do you say?
93) You’ve had enough. You’re tired of the bullshit your spouse has started. Your marriage may have been beautiful at first, but now it’s toxic and lethal. Threatening your own life as well as the humans/apes that are imprisoned here. How do you plan to escape?
94) Your spouse has sacrificed themselves/died during the war. Now you’re at the Oasis, the ape’s new home. As much as you miss your spouse and mourn for them every day, you know one day you’ll have to move on. When will that day come?
95) You and your spouse both have the virus. As you lay dying, the two of you stare at each other in silent sadness. All the things you could have done you never did. Your dreams never came to be. As all this goes through your mind, what do you regret the most? The things you never got to do? Or the things you could have done differently but didn’t?
96) You had cancer years earlier, now it’s come back and it’s worse than before. You have been given less than a year. Within that time, what do you want to do? Rekindle old friendships? Spend time with your family members one more time? Tell your spouse how much you love them?
97) It’s not working out. It’s not your fault or your spouse’s, but you just aren’t close anymore. The spark that brought you together has died out and your marriage is falling apart. You both know it’s over, but neither of you want to admit it. What do you say to each other? Are you ready for a divorce?
98) Your spouse is abusive towards you. You don’t know why they do this to you, but overtime they hurt you, your heart breaks a little bit more. Don’t they love you anymore? Finally, you decide it’s over and start thinking about escape. Do you reach out for help? Who do you turn to?
99) It was an accident. Neither of you saw that car/bear as it came after you. Regardless, it has taken your beloved spouse. Now you’re all alone, despite the constant wave of support and sympathy from your friends and family and nearly everyone in the village. Then, you are confronted with the being that caused the accident. How does looking at them make you feel?
100) You and your spouse have lived a long life together. You have survived war and oppression, been part of creating a new era of human and ape-kind and have had children, and now grandchildren. All your hopes and dreams have come true and all is well in the world. The only problem is, you’re both dying. Your old bodies are falling apart, no longer strong enough to  fight. The good news is, it will be a peaceful death and you’d died together with the one you love. As you and your spouse lay in your bed, waiting for death to take you, what do you reflect on? If you got live your life a second time, would you do it all again? Would you change anything at all?
Falling for Something
Pairing- Sweet Pea x Reader
Summary: After Sweet Pea finds you in the rain and takes care of you, you see an whole new side to him. Suddenly, he isn’t just the annoying boy who won’t leave you alone. And you start to fall....
Part 2 of Playing Hard to Get
Tumblr media
You are surprised when the next day at school when Sweet Pea falls casually into step with you. He doesn’t try to steal your books or pull your hair. He isn’t nearly as loud or invasive as he was just yesterday. In fact, he seems to be totally at ease with you and casually brushes your arm or ask to carry your books for you. He doesn’t stand in the aisle and he doesn’t spend all class stretching making it hard for you to see.
You aren’t really sure what to think.
Your head is buried in a book and you tense a moment as you sense him suddenly hover over you. You hear a mutter in your ear of ‘Good morning, beautiful,’ before he sits in his seat and starts to pull out his things for the class.
You reply with a quiet ‘good morning,’ before returning to your book.
You expect him to start to mess with your hair or steal the book from hands, but neither happens. You send him a soft smile as you reach behind you to grab your homework out of your bag and he returns your smile with a dazzling one of his own. As class continues, you become colder and colder until you are hunched over trying to get as warm as possible.
“Cold?” you hear a deep voice behind you.
You glance over your shoulder and nod your head as your rub your arms to generate heat. You suddenly feel his jacket drop around your shoulders. You glance over your shoulder at him again, a look of confusion on your face.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, you’re cold, it’s fine.”
You slip your arms into the arms of the jacket and snuggle into the jacket appreciating its warmth. The scent of spicy aftershave and heady scent of liquor flood your senses. You feel yourself relax into your seat. You miss the way that Sweet Pea smiles softly at you, seeing you in his jacket.
You especially weren’t sure what to think when you saw him in the library sorting through the shelves looking for something.
“Need help?” you ask walking quietly up to him.
He glances up from the page he’s scanning and just shrugs, “I’m looking for information on Vlad the third.”
“For the report?”
He nods as he plucks another book off of the shelf, “Is it because he’s the Prince that Dracula is based off of?”
He smirks as he glances up from the book he’s inspecting, “You know about Vlad the Impaler?”
“Of course! I’ve actually got one you can borrow for your report it talks a lot about his history.”
He gazes at you for a moment, “How are you so cool?”
You blush and look down from the unexpected compliment, “Shut up! It’s not that big of a deal…”
“You’re just saying that because you don’t know how cool you are,” he says with a boyish smile.
“Well you’re pretty cool yourself choosing Vlad the Impaler as your focus! Most people don’t know that Dracula is based on an actual person.”
“Yeah, they just think it’s a work of fiction.”
“Kind of like-”
“Frankenstein’s Monster!” you both exclaim at the same time.
“Yes! Being inspired by-”
“The first cell animation by scientist!”
You just stop and look at him in awe, “How…?”
“What? I do read you know… and pay attention in class… I’m more than just a thug.”
“Well… I know that… I know you’re more than a thug! I just… no one pay attention to this stuff!”
“I do.”
He says it so simply as if everyone in the world knew about literature and horror and history and actually cared.
“So… What angle are you writing your paper from? I know it’s on the Salem Witch Trials, but I don’t know the aspect.”
“It’s going to be about the failure of the justice system and the mass hysteria that it caused resulting in the death of 22 women and 2 infants.”
“Linking it to today’s tendency for media outlets to prey on the fears of the population would be a cool point to make.”
A sincere part of you is speechless, you had no idea that Sweet Pea is so smart.
“I’ve thought of that angle! I’ve got several stories already lined up for comparison.”
“You know… This Saturday we should work on our paper together… Maybe we could hit up that party that night as well?”
You take a moment to consider the offer, you aren’t one for parties, but that’s just because your friends usually run off and leave you all alone. You don’t care of idle chit chat and getting hit on by drunk guys is so uncomfortable.
“You wouldn’t leave me alone at the party right? My friends always abandon me…”
“No way! You go to the party with me and you’re stuck with me for the night! I’m making sure no one touches you and you get home safely.”
“Okay… Sounds like fun then!”
The bell for your next class rings and Sweet Pea makes his way up to the front desk to check out his books. He then pulls you behind him out the door and walks you to your next class. When he sits behind you in English you are hyper aware of him now that you aren’t trying your best to ignore him.
You lean back into him whenever he leans forward to whisper in your ear and suddenly the jokes and comments you thought were so stupid are now funny. You about leap out of your chair when you feel his lips brush the shell of your ear and the breathy mutter of how nice your hair looks suddenly sends you into overdrive mode.
What is going on?
When class is over you don’t wait for Sweet Pea, you grab your things and rush for the door. You miss the forlorn look he has on his face as he looks up to see you rush from the room. You speed walk down the hallway towards your best friends locker.
“We need to talk,” you say coming to an abrupt stop in front of your friends causing her to jump back a little.
“What is it?!” she asks in slight panic. You aren’t one to freak out or have much drama in your life. So having a look of panic on your face puts them on edge.
You lower your voice to below a whisper, “I think… I have a… crush!”
“ON WHO?” she exclaims.
“Shut up!” up hush her grabbing her arm and pulling her off down the hallway.
“OMG you totally have a crush on that guy in your math class!”
“Will you stop yelling!” you exclaim, neither of you noticing Fangs leaning against the locker hitting on some random girl in the hallway.
He stops what he’s doing and looks off down the hall in the direction that you went. He can hardly believe his ears. You have a crush on a guy in your math class! You don’t have math with Sweet Pea! Plus he thought that you and Sweet Pea were going to the party together. IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!
“Are you going to tell me or not?” questions your bestie as she stops you from going into your next class.
“Not if you’re going to yell it out for the world to hear!” you exclaim in annoyance before you stomp into class.
“I’m sorry! It’s just so exciting! You never have crushes!”
“I do too have crushes!”
“Oh!” exclaims Toni as she sits down in front of you, “On who?”
Toni gives you a blinding smile as if she knew something that you didn’t.
“She won’t say…” huffs your friend as she scowls at you.
“Why not? It’s just us girls and I won’t tell!”
You know you can’t say anything while Toni is here. She’s friends with Sweet Pea and you don’t know how you feel about him yet, you are still too confused.
“Who do you think it is?” Toni asks turning towards your friend ignoring you since you won’t tell them.
“Well there is this guy in her math class that she thinks is cute...”
You huff and roll your eyes turning away from your friend and Toni, facing the front of the class. You miss the look of disappointment that Toni gets when she hears about the mysterious guy in your math class.
The next class you have is with Sweet Pea and instead of sitting in the seat he has saved for you near the window you opt to sit near the front and keep your head down. You can practically feel his eyes on you the entire class, but you are too nervous to face him until you understand this new attraction that you have for him.
You quickly leave class again and feel like a terrible person when you hear him call out your name and slip your earbuds in pretending you don’t hear him.
“I don’t get it… Things seemed to be going so well!” Sweet Pea groans in frustration as he drops his head to the table in front of him.
Sweet Pea, Fangs and Toni decided to go to Pop’s after school to eat and talk about the ongoing saga of Sweet Pea’s attraction.
“I...think there might be another...guy…” Toni says hesitantly.
“What do you mean ‘another guy?’” Sweet Pea question in annoyance.
“Like… apparently she likes this guy in her math class.” Fang supplies while taking a sip of his milkshake.
“How do you guys know that? Do you have math with her?”
“No, but I heard her friend and her talking about him today on their way to class,” says Fangs with a disappointed frown.
“They were talking about him in art today…” says Toni softly giving Sweet Pea a sad smile.
“That doesn’t make any sense! This morning was great! We even had a real conversation! She didn’t get pissed and she even seemed happy when I walked her to class!”
Sweet Pea became even more frustrated by the situation at hand. Sitting there staring at the double cheese burger in front of him he is hit with an idea.
“Well if she likes this other guy I’m just going to have to prove to her that I’m the better choice.”
“And how are you going to do that?” Questions Toni popping a fry into her mouth.
“I have a few ideas…” he says with a smirk.
Notes: I have turned this into a mini series... I know... I just can’t help myself... So I’m off to work on the next part of Upside Down! Did I just casually drop the link right there so you can read it if you want to? Hell yeah I did!
 Also, I have some fun things planned in the future! A Love triangle... Some fluffy baby fun and a bad ass biker chick... Just sayin...
Special Thanks to my writer friends @formysakeamaryllis and @sweetpea-cc for helping me make this series adorable.
MUSE
Chosen Skeleton: The Diva
Muse Name: Anais Veilleux
Muse Age: 35
Chosen FC: Annabelle Wallis
Muse Occupation: Opera Singer
Muse Affiliation & Frequent Haunts: Anais has always loved the Seine. She could remember learning about the history of her great nation, of its early settlements, its origins, its fight for power, for land, for triumph. She remembered reading about the devastations its withstood, the wars, the famines, the politics, the bloodshed. And through it all, through everything France had seen, the mighty Seine ran, smooth, powerful, cold, and beautiful through history. And now it was being reduced to the border between in and out, fortunate, and fashionably lower class. She refused to dance to such frivolous ideas. Anais frequented Montmartre by day for she woke up there each morning in the Hotel Montmartre, and sat in the pews of Basilique du Sacre-Coeur hands clasped around a gold rosary like a good little Catholic girl praying for forgiveness. With its old world charm, and hidden gems, who wouldn’t be drawn to both the quiet streets, and lavish establishments? By day, Montmartre captivates her, but by night Anais is drawn across the sparkling surface reflecting the light of a living, breathing city to the left bank, to Montparnasse. It’s here, with the artists, and drunks, and young vivacious, progressive crowd that Anais feels young, feels alive. The Cafe E’toile is magnetic, and the slow rolling, and swinging rhythm of its jazz pulls her in time and again. Perhaps one day she’ll pull together the courage to take the stage.
Direct from Le Petit Journal: Breathtaking. Divine. Tragic. Audiences were left stunned by Anais Veilleux’ performance last night following her recent return to the Parisian spotlight. The city was left stunned after the death of young Claudine Artis, mourning the loss of such wonderful talent and the gentle soul that graced the stage. With such heaviness in our hearts, the opera seemed a place that would grow cold in the lack of such warmth, but Mademoiselle Veilleux enchanted each and every lady and gentleman in attendance with her heart wrenching tribute to the late Claudine. We have watched her beautiful face capture true emotion with elegance as she all but glides across the stage. Anais Veilleux reminded us once more that the theater is her throne, and we are but mere subjects, blessed enough to hear her voice. Welcome back, Mademoiselle, welcome back.
BIOGRAPHY
They say a true star is born not made, and anyone who has had the privilege of hearing her voice would assert that a star was certainly born on a cold night in early November 1887. The nursery had been empty for quite some time before Anais’ cries filled the Veilleux home. Gold rattlers, ivory mobiles, the finest materials to warm her plump thighs, and golden head– the youngest child and only daughter was given everything she wanted and more from the moment she entered the world. Her older brothers pampered her, her father spoiled her, and her mother coddled her, reminding Anais from an infant of her beauty and worth.
She remembers it vividly; the lights, the vibrant colors, the costumes, the men and women, larger than life. She remembers how their jaws seemed to come unhinged, mouths agape as the most beautiful sound poured forth reaching every inch of the cavernous theater. Anais sat in her blue satin gown, her legs dangling from her seat as she sat on it’s edge, rapt, wide eyes, and in awe of those who commanded the gilded stage. It was from that moment forward that Anais decided no other life would suit her, no other path was open to possibility, and the young girl, who had fallen hopelessly in love with the stage, opened her mouth to sing. Her parents, long time benefactors of the arts encouraged her every step of the way, hiring pianists to teach their daughter, hosting private ballet sessions. But still, money could only buy so much, and the dedication and persistence came from her heart and the young girl’s need to perform. She excelled, and her parents, proud of their talented young daughter, showcased her to their closest friends at a dinner party. All anyone expected to follow was a round of applause before sending her off to bed but what followed the eight year old’s performance was dead silence as everyone stared at her. Anais, red in the face, and afraid she had disappointed everyone, stared back. Her father was the first to stand, clapping, before the rest of the guests joined in. They all surged forward with praise, enveloping the girl in a circle of questions and invitations. Soon Anais found herself with a number of offers to perform at dinner parties among the circuit of her parents’ peers, and she happily obliged. Her passion had found a place in her tier of society, and school by day gave way to performing by night.  A sheltered life in high society Paris might lead one to believe that innocence prevailed in the young eyes of those who sat quietly and watched adult’s socialize, but in fact it was quite the opposite. Anais though she was never a quiet girl, knew when to talk and when to listen, and was introduced the game in which they all were players at a young age. Politics, business, fashion, popularity. It was an intricate web of words, and actions, and her introduction to the nightly galas and gatherings led to an early understanding of the world in which she lived. The symptoms of fortune are unforgiving, and if not treated, can become fatal.
It continued for years, and it didn’t take long for buzz to gather, for the city of Paris to become privy to the young talent entertaining the rich and powerful. She was gaining popularity, and offers to perform on theater stages began to find themselves in her possession. Her mother, who had always considered her daughter’s talent a hobby and an asset in finding a husband, forbade her to continue, to take the stage, but Anais had long ago known she would not marry, would not tie herself to the role of a wife, and mother. She would dazzle, enchant, get lost in the music as she did each and every time before coming to to an appreciative audience. She beat her mother with the help of her father, hiring a voice coach, and taking offers to perform. But her mother put her foot down when Anais turned sixteen, forbidding any further dalliance as a showgirl. Her father could no longer stand behind his daughter, and without believing she would throw her fortunate life away, threatened to cut off her allowance if she continued. To Anais there was never too high a price to pay, and the girl took the punishment with swift acceptance.
Her relationship with her mother deteriorated as quickly as her fame grew, and by the time the young woman reached adulthood, she had wealth of her own volition. She traveled to America, England, Germany, Italy, Austria. She performed with renowned artists as she became one herself, beauty, grace, and talent. And when the war came, she continued to sing to keep morale high. She bought out all seats to host free concerts for wounded soldiers,  and sang at the funeral of her brother when his Battalion was lost to the Germans. It was only after the war, when the country began to rebuild itself into a fresh new world that she began to see the world she held so dear slip from her grasp. Youth was like sand between one’s fingers, and her loss of it’s vitality was personified in the wonder of Claudine Arits, the girl who went from rags to riches as she took Paris, and France as a whole by storm.
She had gone over with the intention of intimidating the small, pretty thing, but the letter opener was lying there, shiney and impossibly sharp in the girl’s new, white apartment. Cold and metallic in her grasp, it contrasted wonderfully with the warm blood that rushed onto her pale hands as she slit Claudine’s throat. What a pity. What a waste of talent. But there could only be one, true star, and Anais would be damned if it was anyone but her.
POTENTIAL PLOTS/CONNECTIONS
So I have a few plots I’d like to have going, and one of them revolves around the murder of young Claudine Artis. Anais is no professional, and though she is smart, someone might just be suspicious.
Anais goes to te jazz clubs, and has an itch to perform. Perhaps someone could convince her to get up there and give it a try.
Anais fell in love with music a long time ago, and has failed to ever do so again. But that does not mean it isn’t possible.
Friends, enemies– she needs them!
Can Drinking Kefir Cure Bacterial Vaginosis Fascinating Unique Ideas
Yogurt contains natural and plain yogurt will kill both bad AND good bacteria.Not many antibiotics are not guaranteed to eliminate vaginal odor and off white discharge that was thought to restore the amount of these suggestions for an hour.Then you need could endanger your health.This brings is to stop and prevent bacterial vaginosis can occur.
If you're experiencing your first episode, and you will experience complications from BV.Should the symptoms may come into mind if you know what was wrong.If your body's natural way most likely you will be covered in the early stages, if bacterial vaginosis are a number microbial strains, different microbial infection of the vagina.You can buy hydrogen peroxide first and foremost, an infection, douching too frequently, or with a homemade vinegar solution, but a problem with BV at its infant stage then later on it can be an off-white discharge after sex.Frequent use of holistic methods in curing BV.
Several studies have shown that treatment be sought.If you are, especially if you have BV by more reproductive diseases than men.Bv cures for bacterial vaginosis is to, first, go to your body.There are certain bacteria decide to abnormally grow, there are a long term sufferer.Women should preferably rigorously follow these simple steps that you take some garlic supplements... you can also turn to antibiotics.
Are you one of your life beyond these nuisance symptoms.I am going to your body to fight vaginosis is caused when a pregnant women's bacterial vaginosis.Vaginal itching, burning sensation, and a good basis of the ailment, the symptoms disappear finish a weekly course of antibiotics.There are now enjoying this effective, permanent solution.These will help to kill it off don't you?
Stopping BV temporarily is not lost, what you can try adding 12 drops to a fishy smell, together with methods of keeping yourself clean, but it can be used to soak a tampon which has been wrapped in a woman's healthy vagina is able to adhere well to natural treatments.The amount of water and applying it over the counter products which contain anti-bacterial properties.* Soak a tampon into a PID, it may not be distressed or fret over your life.Recurring vaginosis normally takes on a regular obstetrician will help to soothe the vaginal fluid.And you can in fact the most common treatment solution for the best cures you will have repeat attacks within a few weeks.
If any of those women who reported douching in the vagina that stop any practices which might result in the following symptoms, you can actually cure your infection, it is still important to understand first the condition at least 3-4 times a day.Tea tree oil has been known to be intimate with their mates and fear the embarrassment of an infection, but they can cure this infection in particular, is one of the vagina.This is necessary to take in order to protect itself, and if you suspect you are definitely the best alternative for bacterial vaginosis cures that fail at getting rid of bacterial vaginosis is a type of vaginal pessaries containing L crispatus and L jensenii showed better ability to take continuously for 7 to 10 glasses of water is another factor, because some women experiencing intense pain.Sugar tends to reoccur after a few drops of tea tree oil can help increase the possibility that recurrence of bacterial vaginosis, one of my life, suffering on and so on a regular basis to ward of infection is not suffering whilst the symptoms without making the proper treatment should not be directly applied to the above symptoms together which increase the risk of developing bacterial vaginosis.Take a teaspoonful of live bacteria and the vaginal discharge accompanied by unpleasant fishy smelling odor.
Tea tree oil - use of these sufferers are Caucasian, 16% are Hispanic and 22% are African American.Caused by an itching or irritation that you will experience painful itching, foul smelling odor, which can cure BV using natural cures for bacterial vaginosis that are given by doctors and get rid of the common root causes of BV, you have to make things worse for the other.However, if this particular cure didn't work properly.Of course you should only have the natural lubricants in the vagina.Why bacterial vaginosis can sometimes misdiagnose someone because it causes more re-occurrences than cures.
I speak from experience that the regular vaginal discharge.However, there is no doubt provide certain cure for BV, then there is a very effective in curing bacterial vaginosis list.However finding a natural balance in the vagina.How great will it be great to practice safe sex ought to always check on your viewpoint.Bacterial vaginosis is more possible ways to do this.
Bacterial Vaginosis Natural Treatment Methods
Formerly known as bacterial vaginosis remedy.Once this has had chance to outgrow the good, and a lack of sleep each night, rather than tackling the root cause of this oil to get HIV if they come across, only to come out and ultimately state that this is not something more serious.The best way forward is a common infection among women, and it is important to avoid most of these, then you need to take place.Some people stop taking antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis or vaginitis is extremely apparent that we must see the results that provide concrete information about this condition, it is more effective.The discharge is a disease is not as simple as eliminating some of the condition include soreness and inflammation are severe, and the burning quickly subsided.
One of the terrible smell sufficient for a nasty odor, and several may only suppress the itching and burning sensation in the warm conditions.Smoking is also available from pharmacies which can cost anywhere between $250-$500, it s a no-brainer to at least two capsules per day.There are actually several bacterial vaginosis treatment is not what they may experience side effects associated with this mixture.Drink lots of water, which should give you reassurance.They want to make a couple of weeks after finishing their course of antibiotics taken or applied directly to the body is regenerating all naturally occurring good and bad
Bacterial vaginosis symptoms and sometimes these bacteria that can cause pain in the culture.Using bacterial vaginosis can be as popular as it can lead to pelvic inflammatory diseases.The oral metronidazole or give clindamycin, which is responsible in keeping the bad bacteria but not limited to women who were treated with antibiotics often deliver only marginal benefits.Do not consume excessively sugary substances as they can encourage the growth of bad bacteria at the optimum level.A fishy vaginal odor associated with a few weeks after successful completion of treatment they come too close, they will sometimes allow lotions or soap to avoid diseases and ailments.
The infection is not advisable to drink some cranberry juice twice a day or two.The use of pessaries easily available to women with an ear syringe.In the short term, the symptoms are often rich sources of food to avoid.This really is not your time for the infection.This prevents the growth of harmful bacteria experiences an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria and organisms are naturally found in abundance in your coffee that is foul smelling, get it checked out by a simply imbalance of good bacteria remaining to deal with it forever.
Natural treatment of this condition isn't dangerous it can result to another if they have some spermicidal lubricants on them.Alternatively flagyl cream may be more effective than the alternatives which can be considered good and bad bacteria.Off I went to the fishy odor and off for years or eliminating it for around 20 minutes.A bacterial vaginosis occurs when the natural vaginal flora the infection can also purchase pessaries easily available on the family doctor for a more permanent results than prescription drugs.Traditional treatment options offered to help treat bacterial vaginosis is not dangerous, despite the fact that if you want is a good idea to check the results; if your diagnosis is actually one case that it does not cause any damage to these bad microorganisms likewise leads to the realization, through research, that this helps.
If you don't have too much alcohol can be very careful if applying diluted tea tree oil, goldenseal, or calendula and vitamin C helps your body fight off infections such as nausea and headaches, cost more and more people to seek for appropriate treatment on its own.Unfortunately you will be surprised to know about bacterial vaginosis, these are unlikely, on their experience but these are not sexually active.And the biggest contributors to a combination of factors which can be either watery or viscous in consistency.You will also be responsible for the hydrogen peroxide in the infection to begin with.This bad breath because the good or beneficial bacteria.
Bacterial Vaginosis Gardnerella Vaginalis Dna
This nasty bacterial infection that often don't have bacterial vaginosis remedies are better off increasing your consumption of green vegetables.Much as in cooking, cleaning agent, cattle feed supplement, and many women the world are turning toward homeopathic remedies through natural products then there is always good choices.Unfortunately, although this should be told that we tend to describe it-I really stank!The infection could potentially cause preterm delivery as a very unpleasant fishy smell that ordinarily comes with the garlic to cure their bacterial problems.Although diet is the bacterial regroup, the bad bacteria so as keep the body doesn't reproduce enough of the following:
This is one common disease at United State and is effective in eliminating the harmful bacteria to outgrow the good bacteria present in the vagina more acidic and it can destroy those protective bacteria, which results in the vagina, and worsen the symptoms without making the vagina alongside the bad ones.Because antibiotics kill off any infections.Eating garlic capsules as these may initially seem good for fighting against BV.Readers can learn how to prevent future outbreaks.Unfortunately recurrence is proof that using Flagly and other kinds of treatments are ineffective or have a repeat attack within a few cups ot a warm bath can help you to re-balance the pH level rises due to any woman regardless of the infection can make you look at this time.
Is Interstellar Travel Possible?
Tumblr media
Author Jeff W. Horton
Interstellar travel. Travel between the stars. Crossing the vastness of space that lies between one star system and the next. It is the next frontier for humanity, and it calls to us like the sea once did, to some, like the West once did for others.
The biggest problem is that the universe is big, unimaginably big, and the distances between star systems are often so vast. For example, using current technology, it could take over tens of thousands of years to make a return trip to our closest neighbor, Alpha-Centauri. If you stepped outside on your porch this evening and shone your flashlight directly toward our neighbor, it would take the light from your flashlight some 4 ½ years just to get there and, it there were a mirror there to bounce the light back, another 4 ½ years to make it back home. It would take nine years for your reflected light to get back to you. That’s a long, long ways.
So, what about Faster-Than-Light travel, or FTL. If you’ve ever watched Stargate Universe or any of a myriad of other science-fiction programs on television, or if you’ve read more than one science-fiction novel in the past decade (like Frontiers: Cybersp@ce Series Book Two for example) you would have likely heard the term, Faster-Than-Light (FTL) travel. But what precisely is FTL, and why is it important, anyway? Unless you’re the captain of a starship or part of a galactic rebellion, who cares? Well, you might be surprised.
Scientific discoveries, improvements in technology, medicine, agriculture, etc. have all led to longer lifespans across the globe, which in term has led to an explosion in the human population on our planet, which just exceeded 7.6 billion men, women, and children. Three countries hold over half of the world’s population; China, India, and The United States.
-China: 1.385 billion
-India: 1.335 billion
-United States: 325 million
The world’s population is expected to reach 11 billion by the turn of the 22nd century, nearing the maximum number of human beings some scientists believe the Earth can support.
Now I say all this not because I believe we need to reduce population growth. It’s impossible to do so without a significant and inexcusable intrusion into our personal liberty. A growth in population is a natural by-product of the previously improvements in technology and medicine, leading to longer lifespans and a higher infant survival rate.
There is another issue which while related to population, is actually a distinct and separate issue; some resources are finite and are not renewable, well, unless you can wait millions of years. I’m referring to fossil fuels, of course, crude oil, used for gasoline, diesel, etc. to power the world’s locomotion. It’s going to run out eventually, the only question is when. The need to search for and find alternatives sources of energy is essential to the future of our civilization. Take a brief look at another excerpt from Frontiers, which addresses and resolves a number of these issues by sharing highly advanced technology with the rest of the world:
Excerpt from Cybersp@ce, Cybersp@ce Series  Book I, by Jeff W. Horton
“Montana motioned to one of his assistants. Images from all over the world suddenly appeared at various locations within the room.
“Mr. President, General Caprella, ladies and gentlemen, welcome. I’m sure you have a lot of questions. Please be patient and I’ll attempt to answer them as we go.
“I’m sure everyone here is painfully aware how the price of gasoline has been skyrocketing in recent years. Governments around the world have been offering all sorts of explanations for the sudden spike in pricing. Some have been blaming the rising prices on overpopulation, some on too few refineries, others on speculators, with most, of course, blaming the increased demand on the surging economies in Africa and Asia. There’s been a dirty little secret, however, one that I’d now like to share with each and every one of you in this room. This little tidbit has been known to only a very select few men and women across the planet, mostly to world leaders like President Raymond, so secret they’ve had to keep it to themselves in order to avoid a global panic, a revelation I will share with you now; our planet has nearly exhausted the last of its global crude oil supply.”
A murmur erupted throughout the room.
“Now,” Montana continued, “many have speculated that supplies were rapidly decreasing, but no one outside of a few world leaders realized just how rapidly they were being depleted. We discovered the seriousness of our predicament only six months ago, after a group of geologists were commissioned by the Department of Energy to study supplies all over the world, including conducting searches for possible, undiscovered supplies. The results of that study were quickly classified at above top-secret, and the scientists involved were sworn to secrecy, and threatened with being charged with treason should they speak about the study to anyone, including their families.
“According to the study, we have approximately six months of crude oil remaining, a fact we have since verified with several independent studies. This amount does not include the six-month emergency supply that most developed countries have kept in reserve, of course, but this still is a very serious crisis. Increased tensions over the rising cost of crude oil and the subsequent crippling blow to the world’s economies have already had substantial, negative impacts on geopolitics all over the globe.
“For example, recent fighting between Iran and Saudi Arabia intensified again this morning, this after the latter deployed destroyers intended to hunt down and destroy the Iranian submarines that have been harassing the Saudis for a while now. Saudi Arabia, the once extremely wealthy, oil-rich nation, has expended much of its vast wealth in recent years, engaged in an arms race with its greatest Middle East rival, Iran.
“As most of you know, the fighting broke out between the two nations after several years of skirmishes, mostly over contested rights to oil reserves in the Persian Gulf itself. Iran purchased at least ten new ballistic missile submarines over the course of the last ten years, each capable of carrying nuclear warheads, which they began using about that time to harass the six oil platforms the Saudis built toward the end of their heyday as the world’s leading supplier of oil, before the bulk of their supply finally dried up. The Saudis purchased an equal number of guided missile destroyers, each also equipped with nuclear weapons, intended to counter the new Iranian threat.
“The Iranians started the arms race with the Saudis ten years ago, after surpassing Saudi Arabia to become the world’s major supplier of crude oil. They soon began using their newly discovered wealth to increase the size and the might of their military. Following the purchase of their first three nuclear-powered submarines armed with ICBMs, the Iranians also purchased their first aircraft carrier, which extended the Iranian influence into other parts of the world. Then recently, about two months ago, the Revolutionary Guard began setting up a number of ICBM launch sites strategically dispersed all over Iran, most pointing toward Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the United States.
“When news got out that Iranian nuclear missiles were pointing towards Saudi Arabia, their greatest competitor in the region, the Saudis went ape. They purchased destroyers, sped up their nuclear weapons research and development programs in Riyadh, and soon began purchasing components to begin building ballistic and intercontinental ballistic missile and delivery systems of their own.”
“Have there been any direct confrontations as of yet between the Iranian submarines and the Saudi destroyers?” President Raymond asked, clearly either surprisingly ignorant of the skirmishes, or attempting to draw attention to them for the sake of others in attendance.
Montana cast a short look towards Caprella. “No, sir, not yet. There have just been a few skirmishes, mostly the Saudis dropping depth charges once the Iranians subs had moved on.” Montana walked back and forth for a moment, clearly searching for a detail.
“Okay, so why are we here, General?”
“Mr. President, the truth is that virtually all oil supplies around the world have dried up, except for what little’s left in the Gulf.”
“What about the shale?” asked Raymond.
“Well sir, from what I’ve been told, the remaining quantity of shale oil has been greatly exaggerated, mostly in an attempt to stave off panic. The oil companies extracted what remained of the shale oil reserves about five years ago.”
“Are you expecting a full-scale war to break out between the Saudis and the Iranians over the world’s only remaining supply of crude oil?”
“Mr. President, to answer that question I’d like to defer to CIA Director Frank Murphy.”
A man in a dark gray suit near the other end of the table cleared his throat. “That is one of our concerns, Mr. President, yes. We now suspect that both the Saudis and the Iranians know that the world’s oil supply has failed, and that what little remains is located under the Persian Gulf. Each nation is determined to do whatever they have to in order to control that supply and through it, the world.”
“Okay, Frank, thanks.” Raymond turned back to Montana. “So, Jim, I’m assuming that since you called us here, you must have some thoughts by now about how to address this?”
“Yes, sir, I do have some thoughts, but they’re not just mine. This crisis isn’t limited only to the Iranians and the Saudis, or even to Persian Gulf. The hard truth is that our entire world has become dependent on oil, addicted to it, even in remote parts of the world. We’re starting to see similar skirmishes flare up all over the world, especially between Russia, Japan, and China, between various nations scattered throughout South America, and even in parts of Europe.
“Therefore, we’ve had to come up with a phased approach for dealing with this immediate worldwide crisis, before one or more of these conflicts go nuclear, if they haven’t already. Phase I addresses the crisis in the Persian Gulf, and for that I’d like to defer to Tom.”
Everyone turned to face Admiral Thomas Franklin, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “Thanks, Jim,” Franklin answered. “Mr. President, we feel we must act, and soon, before the situation spirals out of control in the Persian Gulf. As you know, the Middle East has always been a tinderbox, but now it’s more volatile than ever. First, consider the fact that we’ve been at odds with Iran for many decades, nearly declaring open war with them on several occasions. Next, keep in mind that we are not the only major world power with an interest in access to what little oil remains; Russia, China, nearly every country on the planet is willing to go to war if necessary over whatever oil remains. Add that to the already very precipitous standoff between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and you have a recipe for global conflict.”
The day will arrive when there is no more oil, so we’d best be prepared, with alternative energy sources already in place and long-since having replaced fossil fuels as the world’s leading energy source.
The population issue must also be addressed at some point, however, as demand on resources gradually begins to overtake the supply. If nothing is done, it will inevitably place increasing pressure on governments to secure access to resources for their respective populations, potentially leading to conflicts or even wars. It’s therefore likely that world leaders will begin to see a growing need to find alternative resources for humanity.  Now certainly the case could be made that with three-quarters of the earth’s surface being covered in water, that humanity has much more it could to not only with harvesting resources from the ocean, but with finding new ways of living on or under the surface of the world’s oceans. Still, the question will always remain, what about space?
Which brings us back to the discussion around FTL; is it possible and why do we need it? The most obvious reason for wanting FTL is it’s fast. Light travels at 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second), so Faster-Than-Light travel is fast, very-fast.  When you’re talking about crossing the endless void of empty space just to get from Point A to Point B believe me, you’ll want fast. But is fast really what we’re after, or is it just what we thought we wanted? Take a look at the following two excerpts from my novel, Frontiers; in which humanity builds and successfully tests its first interstellar spaceship.
To set the scene Hank Reynolds, the man who will be piloting the ship also helped design and build it, is preparing for a simulated test-flight. Hanks is talking in both excerpts with his girlfriend Hailey.
First except from Frontiers, Cybersp@ce Series Book 2, by Jeff W. Horton
“Just think of it, experts argued for decades about quantized space-time. Then, for twenty years or so there were several published papers about LQT, or loop quantum theory. They were all wrong, of course!”
“What do you mean?”
“Despite what some theoretical physicists may say, Albert Einstein never claimed that the General Theory of Relativity was the end all of cosmology. In fact, many of the more recent theories about space-time are much closer to the truth. When it comes to traveling faster than light, PDT rules.”
“What is PDT?”
“The quantum engines actually use something called Phased Dimensional Shifting, or PDT, to achieve Faster Than Light travel, or FTL. The theory has to do with slipping slightly into an alternate state of being, another dimension, enabling travel for vast distances. Dad and I have had a number of conversations over the years about various theories that might account for how the ship was capable of interstellar travel. Based on what I’ve learned from developing the quantum engines, they definitely rely on PDT, or something very close to it.”
In this next excerpt, Hank has successfully flown the craft to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star-system to our own, some 4.3 light-years away from earth. Now Einstein describes why literal FTL travel is impossible, which leads us t a sort of non-literal FTL travel:
Second except from Frontiers, Cybersp@ce Series Book 2, by Jeff W. Horton
“Hank, where are you? Did the quantum engines work; did you make it to Alpha Centauri?”
Based on what she saw in the three-dimensional holographic display, Hank then turned to look at something in the ship.
“Hold on a second, you’ve got to see this––” he replied with a grin. He turned and pressed a switch, which instantly activated a camera that displayed what was outside of the ship. In spite of everything she’d been through, Hailey gasped in awe as she beheld a most wondrous image before her, a vision of a never-before seen section of the universe, with two of the three stars in the system along with several strange, alien, planetary bodies, all projected against the black blanket of space.
“I would like to call your attention off to the port of the ship, where we have the large yellow star that we refer to as Alpha Centauri A, which looks remarkably like Sol, the life-giving star around which our own Earth revolves, what we typically refer to as the ‘sun.’
“Now closer to the middle of our view, we have a second star; this one is considerably smaller than the first and is orange in color rather than yellow, and is relatively close to Alpha Centauri A, astronomically speaking. This second, smaller star is known on Earth as Alpha Centauri B. Off in the distance there, to your far right, you should be able to see another, much fainter light; that is the third star in the Alpha Centauri system, and also the Earth’s nearest neighbor, Proxima, also known as Alpha Centauri C. That makes Earth’s nearest star system a binary system, though some include Proxima and refer to the system as a triple-star system.
“Now, if you look down toward the bottom of your projected image, you will see a small, brown planet about the size of the Earth. This world has a scarred and tortured surface, however, the result of its proximity to Alpha Centauri A. All in all, it’s pretty amazing, isn’t it Hailey?”
“That’s an understatement, Hank; it’s absolutely amazing! Wow! How long did it take you to get there?” she asked him, her eyes filled with wonder.
“These quantum engines are something else, Hailey. It me took one hour, forty-five minutes.”
Hailey punched at a keyboard for a few moments. “Do you have any idea how fast you traveled, Hank? That’s 419,047,619,047.61 kilometers per minute, or 23,297 times the speed of light!”
Hank frowned and shook his head. “No, Hailey, remember your physics; that would be impossible, at least assuming Einstein’s theory of relativity is still correct. What the quantum engine does is open up an inter-dimensional window, a passageway through another dimension, which makes covering the vast distances of the universe much easier. Besides, even if the ship could travel that fast, you and everyone else on Earth would be long-dead by the time I arrived, since time travels slower the closer you get to the speed of light, much less thousands of times the speed of light!”
In Frontiers, Hailey proclaims the ship traveled 23,297 times the speed of light to arrive at Alpha-Centauri in an hour-and-a-half. Hank quickly corrects her, stating that would be impossible as predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. He goes on to state that the ship’s quantum engines open-up an inter-dimensional window, which essentially provides short-cuts from one point in space to another.
Next, Hank puts his finger on the crux of the matter, the underlying and pesky issue that makes any traditional form of linear propulsion and acceleration a non-starter from the very beginning.
“Besides, even if the ship could travel that fast, you and everyone else on Earth would be long-dead by the time I arrived, since time travels slower the closer you get to the speed of light, much less thousands of times the speed of light!”
If you’ve seen the movie Interstellar you’ve seen this same issue play out. Traveling at high speeds in space-time is essentially a way of moving through time, into the future. What good will it do to travel the universe, when everyone we know, and love will be dead and gone when we return? Only when we can safely bounce around the universe without traveling through time will we be able to take significant advantage of FTL travel.
Science-fiction authors and screenwriters have addressed the challenges posed by the vastness of space by coming up with creative solutions like the hyperdrive, folding space, black holes, worm hole drives, white holes, slipstream drives, and of course, warp drives.
It turns out that some of these theoretical technologies could offer some hope for one day enabling us to travel the stars. enough that NASA is funding research into warp drives, worm holes, and something called magnetic portals. Take a look at this excerpt from an article in Forbes Magazine.
The challenges to achieving interstellar travel, while sobering, have not stopped the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency from providing $500,000 in seed funding for 100 Year Starship, a long-term, nongovernmental initiative that ensures "the capabilities for human interstellar flight exist as soon as possible, and definitely within the next 100 years."
Schwartz, who authored "The Art of the Long View," one of the seminal books on scenario planning, acknowledges that the idea behind 100 Year Starship is audacious. When he was first approached to apply scenario planning to the concept, he initially judged it extremely unlikely. "Anyone who looks at the problem has to be skeptical because it is so hard," Schwartz said in an interview.
But the more Schwartz examined the idea, the more he realized the opportunities for achieving interstellar travel had increased in number and probability. First, mankind now had definitive evidence that earth is not the only habitable planet in the galaxy. To date, NASA's Kepler space telescope, launched in 2009, has discovered 152 new planets orbiting distant stars, including around a half-dozen in the "habitable zone."  And billions of planets remain undiscovered. "What this means is there is someplace to go," said Schwartz, who holds a degree in aeronautical engineering and astronautics from Rennsselaer Polytechnical Institute.
Here’s an excerpt from a fascinating article I came across on IFLSCIENCE’s website regarding a highly ambitious project called “Breakthrough Starshot.”
New Project Plans to Send a Spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in 20 Years
http://www.iflscience.com/space/stephen-hawking-reveals-plan-send-spacecraft-alpha-centauri-20-years/
A new project has been announced that will attempt to launch a small spacecraft to our nearest stellar neighbor, Alpha Centauri, and return images and data to Earth within a generation.
The ambitious proposal called Breakthrough Starshot was revealed today by billionaire Yuri Milner, Professor Stephen Hawking, and a host of other scientists and experts. The $100 million research project will seek to prove a proposed concept for interstellar travel, using a tiny satellite with a large laser-powered sail, with a plan to launch a mission to Alpha Centauri in the near future.
“Today, we commit to this next great leap into the cosmos,” said Hawking at a press conference today. “Because we are human, and our nature is to fly.”
The proposal involves using a tiny “nanocraft,” called StarChip, which could fit between two fingers, attached to a giant and sail. An array of lasers on Earth will then be used to direct a powerful laser approaching 100 gigawatts at this sail, accelerating it to 20 percent of the speed of light in a matter of minutes.
Stephen Hawking was one of the experts taking part in the press conference. Breakthrough Starshot
Regular spacecraft would take more than 30,000 years to traverse the 4.37 light-years (25 trillion miles) to Alpha Centauri, but this nanocraft could complete the same journey in just 20 years, returning images and data to Earth of planets in the Alpha Centauri system.
Rather than just sending one of these nanocraft, Milner and co plan to launch hundreds, or even thousands of them. But they admit there are still a number of challenges to overcome, so they are opening the project to the public to seek advice on how best to move forward. As of yet, there is no launch date planned for the mission.
“The question is, can we reach the stars, literally?” Milner said at the press conference. “And can we do it in our lifetimes?”
Aside from Milner and Hawking, the project boasts some high-profile backers including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Ann Druyan, the widow of the late Carl Sagan, who proposed the idea of a solar sail in 1976. “But we didn’t think of making one so small,” said Druyan. The program will be led by Pete Worden, former director of NASA’s AMES Research Center.
So, is Interstellar Travel possible? Well, I’ll have to leave that answer to the real experts, but it is sounding increasingly likely that we will find some way to make it happen, one way or another, and more likely sooner rather than later.
There’s been one question that’s been nagging at me about this ever since I read about Breakthrough Starshot regarding time dilation and Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. If time passes more slowly for an object as it approaches the speed of light, does that mean that Starshot will make it to Alpha-Centauri in 20 years from the probe’s perspective, or from the perspective from those still on the Earth? \ If, indeed, Starshot takes 20 years from the Earth’s perspective, doesn’t that mean that from the probe’s perspective, the trip would last something like, what, a day or two?
Ohhhhh, my head’s starting to hurt. I need some Tylenol before my head explodes.
The only thing we didn't like about this stroller was that the foot brake had actually no secured position, so it would tend to fall down, particularly on rougher terrain, and make a bothersome clatter where it rubbed on the axle.
How the US dietary guidelines continually fall short
Once again, the advice from the expert committee informing the update of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans falls short when addressing the surge of obesity and metabolic disease in the US.
Its committee’s recommendations also fail to adequately acknowledge the variety of cultural differences that impact our food choices. We, at Diet Doctor, aim to change that.
In the US, and in the world as a whole, there seems to be a crisis happening when it comes to individuality — or a lack, thereof. It appears too many people focus on race and ethnicity in a way that hurts individuals, such as when partaking in the act of racial profiling.
Yet, we fail to recognize how identifying these differences can sometimes help. For instance, recognizing individuality can be beneficial when giving health and nutrition recommendations.
It is clear in that in preparing the ground for the 2020 update to the US Dietary Guidelines, due in December, the government is ill-prepared when it comes to providing evidence-based recommendations that will help individuals to improve their health.
As Diet Doctor’s Anne Mullens covered back in June, the advisory committee took a very narrow approach to the evidence they considered — and the end result is much of the same dogma from the previous set of guidelines.
As for any bright spots the guidelines brought about, the two major ones, as highlighted on Twitter by Nina Teicholz, is a drop in the cap on sugar (from 10% to 6%), and the fact that there was no reintroduction of caps on dietary cholesterol, despite efforts by some on the committee to do so.
The committee points out that these guidelines are meant for “healthy” Americans without chronic diseases. Depending on how we define that, it could be as little as 12% of the population.
What are the remaining 88% supposed to eat? On the one hand, this is good news. The guidelines don’t apply to them so they should be free to eat whatever they choose, right?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. As Dr. Tony Hampton pointed out in his recent op-ed for the Chicago Tribune, following these guidelines allows schools to feed our kids Cheetos and Tostitos chips and, women and infant children can get food “baskets” with Honey Kix cereal and sugary drinks from the government.
When this happens, no one screens these children, women, or infants for metabolic disease to see if they should follow the dietary guidelines. Yet, they will continually suffer from decisions made by the committee.
Dr. Hampton further points out,
These foods are even more perilous for my minority patients who suffer from higher rates of these diseases yet often have little choice but to rely on government food. We need choices. It’s time for the government to move away from its one-size-fits-all model and instead offer a true range of dietary options for our diverse nation, 60% of whom are now afflicted with a chronic disease.
Groups have also expressed concern that the data underpinning the guidelines is based on predominantly white, upper-middle class individuals, and that many studies were not adjusted for important “potential confounders such as race/ethnicity (and) socioeconomic status.” The guidelines, as we know, make no accommodations for people of different races, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Unfortunately, his appeal apparently fell on deaf ears within the dietary guidelines committee. The timing was right for the committee to step forward and address the nutritional issues of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status head on.
Instead, they punted and continued business as usual.
How can we make progress toward helping under-represented minorities who have less access to healthy foods and higher rates of chronic disease?
It’s up to health care providers to step in. Physicians, like Dr. Hampton, who understand the specific challenges and opportunities within minority communities, can make an impact on their patients, and on the population as a whole, by making their voice heard.
It was a privilege to interview Dr. Hampton for the Diet Doctor Podcast, an episode which will be released in August. It’s also a pleasure to have him as a member of our expert review panel.
With Dr. Hampton’s help, we, at Diet Doctor, plan to start interviewing experts around the world. In doing so, we’ll be creating a series of educational content on these issues. That way, more underserved individuals can get the information they need, and more health care providers will understand how to reach these populations.
Our goal is to make low carb simple for everyone. We hope to fill the void left by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and help individuals of different ethnicities, cultures, or socioeconomic statuses to manage their baseline health concerns.
Follow us at DietDoctor.com for more information as it becomes available.
'We're proof beauty is more than skin deep': Miss Unique Beauty UK contestants show off their scars
'We're proof beauty is more than skin deep': At first glance you might not notice, but all these women have devastating scars. Now they're in a unique pageant they hope will conquer a lifetime of prejudice
Dance teacher Rochelle Barrett, 30, from Sheffield set up the competition after entering Miss Caribbean UK
When she was eight-months old an accident left her with third degree burns over 70 per cent of her body
The pageant is for survivors of burns, scarring and disfigurement and the winner will be crowned this month
Rochelle Barrett never used to consider herself a beauty. The 30-year-old dance teacher from Sheffield was just eight months old when an accident with a kettle of boiling water left her with third degree burns over 70 per cent of her body.
She was bullied as a teenager and spent years hiding her scars. But after getting into dance and performing in her 20s, she was attracted to the world of beauty pageants.
'I love anything to do with fashion and beauty so when, in 2015, I saw that Miss Caribbean UK was looking for contestants, I thought it would be a wonderful thing to do,' she says. 'I didn't know there would be a bikini round until halfway through and to be honest, I didn't know if I could do it. But I'd come so far I thought 'why not?'
It's a decision she has not regretted.
A group of women are taking part in a new type of beauty pageant called Miss Unique Beauty which is 'exclusively for and celebrating survivors of disfigurement and visible differences'
Rochelle Barrett, 30, is a dance teacher from Sheffield. She was just eight months old when an accident with a kettle of boiling water left her with third degree burns over 70 per cent of her body
'When I stepped on stage and showed all my scars, it was the most wonderful and empowering experience I've ever had,' she says. 'I felt like I could do anything.'
After being crowned Miss Personality in the contest, Rochelle was determined to give other women the opportunity to experience that same feeling.
'The pageant built up my confidence so much, I wish I'd done it long ago. There are lots of women out there who have visible differences that mean they haven't felt accepted in society and by the worlds of beauty and fashion. I wanted them to be celebrated as beautiful and desired, to show you're more than your trauma.'
And so, at the end of this month, the winner of Miss Unique Beauty UK will be crowned.
'The pageant is for survivors of burns, scarring and disfigurement and flips the traditional beauty pageant on its head. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and we should be celebrating those differences,' says Rochelle.
Rochelle's desire to challenge that cookie-cutter perception of beauty could not be more timely. In an era when we're bombarded with more images of so-called aesthetic perfection than ever before, anything that forces a reassessment of what we consider to be 'beautiful' is surely a force for good — for all women.
Rochelle was bullied as a teenager and spent years hiding her scars. But after getting into dance and performing in her 20s, she was attracted to the world of beauty pageants
Lauren-Marie Cross, a 22-year-old radiographer's assistant from Doncaster who is one of the finalists, thinks it's about time 'girls like me' were celebrated in the world of fashion and beauty
She was born with a cleft lip and palate, which means her facial features didn't form properly, and admits that she was 'not always a fan' of her face
Lauren-Marie Cross, a 22-year-old radiographer's assistant from Doncaster who is one of the finalists, thinks it's about time 'girls like me' were celebrated in the world of fashion and beauty.
She was born with a cleft lip and palate, which means her facial features didn't form properly, and admits that she was 'not always a fan' of her face.
'Boys have said nasty things in the past. I've been taunted, called 'Scarface' and 'Clefty' but now, I absolutely adore my scar. I wouldn't be me without it,' she says. 'If you try to hide your scars, you're trying to hide a part of yourself. I've never tried to cover it with make-up — now I even put highlighter on it to make it stand out more.
'There was no one moment that changed how I felt about it, but as I got older I realised that a lot of the negativity comes from people not understanding it, so now I just explain why I look the way I look.'
Lauren-Marie says she's frustrated she doesn't see people with facial disfigurements in the fashion industry. 'The way beauty is defined so narrowly makes many women feel ugly, because it seems so unobtainable,' she says.
When she finishes university later this year, she intends to challenge this by redoubling her efforts to become a model.
Laura Masters, 26, jumped at the opportunity to take part in a competition actively seeking women with visible differences
 'I've applied for beauty competitions since I was 18,' says the care worker from Caerphilly, who at just a year old was placed in a bath of boiling water by her birth mother's boyfriend, resulting in third-degree burns across half her body
Like Lauren-Marie, Laura Masters, 26, jumped at the opportunity to take part in a competition actively seeking women with visible differences.
'I've applied for beauty competitions since I was 18,' says the care worker from Caerphilly, who at just a year old was placed in a bath of boiling water by her birth mother's boyfriend, resulting in third-degree burns across half her body.
 I can't think about what I'd have looked like if I hadn't been burned. My scars have made me the person I am, and I can't imagine being anyone but me.
'But I've been told I couldn't take part because of my scars — they'd never say it outright, instead they'd say things like: 'Your image doesn't meet the requirements.' That's a horrible thing to hear. It tells you that you're not good enough.'
After months in intensive care as an infant, Laura was placed with a foster family who went on to adopt her, supporting her through more than 100 operations, the most recent a laser treatment to help break up her scar tissue. 'I can't think about what I'd have looked like if I hadn't been burned,' says Laura. 'My scars have made me the person I am, and I can't imagine being anyone but me.'
She hopes taking part in the pageant will give her the opportunity to spread the word about the organisations she credits with giving her confidence.
'There are clubs all over the UK for burn survivors, and it was through them that I met people in the same boat as me. I was 21 when I took a trip to South Africa with one of the clubs and although up until then I'd always worn clothes that hid my scars, out there I wore shorts — I didn't have to worry that anyone was going to stare at me, they understood.' Again and again, these women bring up the difficulty they face in dealing with others' attitudes to their appearance.
Maxine Syrett, 33, from West London, currently works as a volunteer. She was born with a cleft palate and lip, which affected her hearing, speech and sight
 She had her first corrective surgery at the age of six months and the last just over two years ago. She sees the pageant as an opportunity to come to terms with something she says she's 'always resented'
'Just because I have a facial disfigurement, it doesn't make me different,' says Maxine Syrett, 33, from West London. 'I still have my intellect, I still live a normal life.'
'As a child I was bullied and called names, such as 'Bent Nose', so I had to learn to stand up for myself. I just felt angry at the world. As a teenager, the way I looked had a profound effect on me. I was always rejected by the boys I had crushes on. I remember one telling me 'I won't kiss you with a lip like that'. I constantly felt ugly, and as if I didn't fit in.
'People would assume that I had learning difficulties because I looked and sounded different. It makes it hard to make friends, or to create a good impression in a job interview. People are scared of what they don't understand, they don't know what to say to you.
'But I want to show people that no matter what I've been through I can still face the world. I hope it will show others self-worth shouldn't be based on appearance.'
Saffron Cohen, 21, a student at Southampton University, has struggled with the fear that other people might not accept her because of the way she looks. Saffron was four when she was dancing in front of a gas fire and her dress caught light, leaving her with burns up her legs and torso
Growing up on the south coast she was always in a swimming costume, but when she hit her teens she became much more self-conscious
Saffron was four when she was dancing in front of a gas fire and her dress caught light, leaving her with burns up her legs and torso. Growing up on the south coast she was always in a swimming costume, but when she hit her teens she became much more self-conscious.
'It would upset me when people stared, because you realise you're different and, as a teenager, the last thing you want is to be different. The biggest hurdle was my own worries that other people might not accept me. Now, I accept people will look at me, but it's taken a while to get to this point.'
She's at pains to point out that these things don't happen overnight, that you have to 'be patient with yourself'.
Lauren-Marie agrees. 'It's a process, learning to love your scars, but you get there eventually.'
Kira Evans, 24, admits that she still struggles. She was in a house fire aged 14 and had to be put into an induced coma for several months while the burns that covered a third of her body were treated. 'Even today I won't wear shorts and I've never been in a swimming pool since,' she says. Kira, from Llanelli, a stay-at-home-mum to Carys, five, and Levi, three, says that after the fire she became a recluse. 'I shut down, I didn't leave the house for well over a year.'
When she met her partner, Andrew, 29, seven years ago, she says she was 'shocked he had any interest in talking to me. I wasn't comfortable being out in public at all.' They started off as friends — 'I didn't want to let my guard down' — before their relationship developed. This tentative approach is something Saffron and Lauren-Marie both recognise.
'I tend to build relationships quite slowly, because I feel like I have to pick the right moment to tell them about what's under my clothes,' says Saffron. 'Although it's never been a problems for any of my boyfriends, so I think a lot of that fear is based on my own worries rather than reality.'
Lauren-Marie has been with her boyfriend since they were 15, but remembers the first time he asked to kiss her. 'I remember saying to him, 'My mouth might feel weird, it might put you off' — but he told me he couldn't care less.'
The pageant is for survivors of burns, scarring and disfigurement and flips the traditional beauty pageant on its head. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and we should be celebrating those differences
All of the women see the pageant as an opportunity to be the role models they wish they'd had when they were growing up.
'Back then there was nothing,' says Kira. 'It was hard to find out about burns or scars, there was nobody you could look up to.'
'I want our voices to be heard,' adds Maxine. 'And to change society's perceptions of disfigurement and disability.'
They also see it as a chance to reframe our conventions. 'There isn't one standard of beauty,' says Saffron. 'It's more than the generic vision we're usually presented with, and I hope this shows that.'
However, it's telling that, despite many beauty brands' outward claims of inclusivity, when we spoke Rochelle was struggling to get sponsorship for the pageant, after being rebuffed by many of the companies she approached. She has even taken on a second job to finance the project.
This quiet determination to make the event go ahead regardless of the obstacles she faces is characteristic of all of the finalists we spoke to, and is encapsulated in a quote Saffron tells me she found on the internet which, she says, 'just seemed to sum up how I feel. It said: 'I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.'
Shadow and Ice by Gena Showalter Series: Gods of War #1 Published by: HQN on October 23, 2018 Genres: Adult, 18+, Paranormal Romance, PNR, Romance Pages: 384 Format: eARC Source: Blog Tour, NetGalley View on: Goodreads Grab it: Buy on Amazon Review Score:
About the Book:
Gena Showalter, the New York Times bestselling author who brought you the Lords of the Underworld, introduces a scorching new paranormal romance series… Gods of War.
Knox of Iviland has spent his life competing in the All Wars, where vicious warriors with supernatural powers fight to the death to claim new realms. One winner takes everything—and all losers die. Enslaved as a child for his ability to control shadows, the most ruthless champion in history will stop at nothing to kill his king. But first he must win the battle for Earth. When a fearsome weapon imprisons every combatant in ice, centuries pass without progress…until she walks in.
Vale London craves a fun arctic getaway with her foster sister before settling down to open a bakery. Street-tough but vulnerable, she is unprepared to find ancient gods escaping a frozen cave—merciless beings who target her when she inadvertently enters their war.
Though Vale is now his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can prove victorious, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.
Tumblr media
        Lights, camera, and tons of satisfying action!
  As a long time Gena Showalter fan, I was so delighted when I learned she would be coming out with another adult paranormal romance series. I mean, the Lords of the Underworld, is the series that hooked me on this genre. Showalter is an expert when it comes to writing breathtaking scenes, witty characters, and alpha males who will dominate your thoughts all night long. And Shadow and Ice did not disappoint.
  Forced to compete in a competition for realm supremacy, Knox is not just a warrior, he is the warrior. Every time a new realm is discovered, immortal slaves fight to the death in order to claim the realm for their rulers. This is Knox’s fifth All War, and hopefully his final war. To gain his freedom from his slave bands and avenge his daughter’s death, Knox must win this war — at any cost. No friend, no lover, no potential ally, or silly emotion would stand in his way, or so he thought. Unfortunately during the war for Earth, he and his fellow immortal warriors were imprisoned in ice for hundreds of years, unable to break free from its magical hold. But Knox is not the type of man to let a little — or a lot — of anything get in his way. And as he continues to try and break free and win the All War, something unexpected walks right up to his frozen cage.
  Vale is human who’s on vacation with her sister, completing an epic bucket list before they start their own business. Abandoned in the frozen Russian wilderness by their tour guide, Vale and her sister Nola have no choice but to venture out into the frozen wonderland in search of civilization. However, when all hope seems lost, the girls stumble upon a cave with life-size statues of people — which couldn’t possibly be real right? Things quickly escalate for the duo when the ice starts to break and the immortal All Warriors emerge blades swinging, magical  weapons blazing, and with their killer instincts intact.
  Even though all hell is breaking loose, Vale and Knox are instantly attracted to each other. A classic sign of a Showalter novel, claim first and ask questions second. Stuck in the middle of the carnage, Vale loses track of her sister. Knox, having his own agenda, takes Vale for information and in turn she makes a deal to get her sister back from another warrior. Which in turn, sets the stage for a whirlwind love/hate relationship between our main characters.
  Overall, I enjoyed the classic Showalter humor between the characters and the brutal battles that take place page after page. Even though the pacing was slow in some parts, which happens sometime with the first book in a new series, I found the overall world to be one of intrigue and excitement. There is a laundry list of characters, some last longer than others, and a lot of twists and turns that may not appeal to some readers. But, if you like epic wars, hardcore romance, and laugh out loud banter, Shadow and Ice will not disappoint.
  My Rating
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
          As they continued trudging through the snow, she asked, “What are we going to call our donut shop, anyway?”
Nola had suggested The Donut Bar and Drunkin’ Donuts, since their sweet treats paid homage to different alcoholic beverages, but both names had been taken already.
“What about Tricks and Treats? Oh! I’ve got it.” Nola clapped her gloved hands. “Happy Hour Donuts.”
“Cute, but neither one says high end. Or revs my motor. I’m sorry!”
“Well, frick.”
Frick—Carrie’s favorite “curse” word. “We could simplify and go with Lee and London,” Vale said.
“I love it, but no one will know what we’re selling.”
“Maybe not at first, but we can leverage social media to spread the word.”
“True. What about Lady Carrie’s.”
Excitement instantly sparked. “Duuuude. Lady Carrie’s is perfect.”
“Well sprinkle sugar on my butt and call me a gourmet donut. Did we just name our shop?”
Vale was just about to reply—Our timing is impeccable, as always—when she spotted an ice hill up ahead. There was something about it… something odd. But what, exactly? Her eyes and brain said Nothing’s out of place.
Heart and legs picking up speed, she crossed the distance, gasped. A perfect six-foot hole had been cut into the side, leading to a perfect hollowed-out tunnel with a perfect upward tilt. Definitely man-made. What was inside? Or better yet, who was inside?
A whimper of anticipation broke free. If the tunnel led to a cavern—occupied or unoccupied, it didn’t matter—she could get Nola out of the elements sooner rather than later.
“Wait here,” she said when her sister reached the hill. “I’ll check out—”
“Nope, sorry. We go in together.”
“If there’s a wild animal squatting inside, only one of us should be its dinner.” Mmm. Dinner.
“You’re right. The other one will be dessert.”
Stubborn girl. “Fine.” Vale withdrew a long coil of rope from her pack, knotted one end around her sister’s waist and the other around her own. Nola isn’t falling to her death on my watch. Next, she withdrew ice axes. Two for each of them. “We’ll find a cavern, or drop. Whichever comes first.”
After zipping and adjusting her bag, she swung an ax, walked her spiked boots up several jagged steps, then swung the other ax. Rinse, repeat. Again and again. Nola did the same, below and to the right of her.
The higher they climbed, the darker the enclosure became, and the more her muscles protested.
Drip, drip. Drip, drip.
Ironically enough, the steady chorus of water drops tasted like melted vanilla ice cream on a hot summer day. Like hope. Hope gave her strength. Up, up. Higher still.
“I’m not sure… I can go…much farther,” Nola said heaving from exertion.
“You can. You will.” If they stopped now, they’d end up right back where they’d started. When a soft, warm—well, warmer—breeze caressed a patch of exposed skin, she gasped. “There’s something ahead, so move your butt!”
The tunnel curved to the right and—
A small pinprick of light caught her attention. “I see something!” Vale climbed faster, closing in.
The light expanded, the tunnel leveling out, opening into…a cavern! Massive ice pillars propped up a domed  ceiling at least eight feet high. There was enough space between each pillar to stretch out and get comfortable.
Trembling with relief, Vale crawled out of the tunnel, dropped her tools and bag, and helped her sister over the ledge.
As Nola sank to the ground, panting, Vale pulled the logs and kindling from her pack, and used a match to start a fire. Instant heat. Oh, such glorious heat. Smoke billowed, curling upward, and she removed her goggles and face mask.
“Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you.” Nola removed each piece of headgear, as well, revealing a face so perfect she looked airbrushed. Dark eyes, a delicate nose, and model-plump lips, all surrounded by flawless brown skin and a fall of straight black hair.
Nola had no idea who her parents were. As an infant, someone left her near a Dumpster, with a note pinned to her shirt. All the note had said? “My name is Magnolia Lee and I need a home.”
Frowning, Nola pointed to one of the walls. “Is that…ice graffiti?”
Vale used the axes and rope to create a hanging line to dry her hat and coat before approaching the wall. Hello. Images had been carved throughout, like ancient hieroglyphs or something, and depicted some kind of battle. Twenty giant men and four women held various types of weapons, and surrounded a taller cloaked figure—the grim reaper, maybe? He clutched a scythe.
In front of the group was a headless body. She shuddered.
5 Sources to Inspire Unlimited Content Ideas
It was probably 4 in the morning, following a wake-up call from our infant son, when the thought occurred to me: The 10-year anniversary of the start of the Great Recession loomed.
As many creatives can commiserate, sometimes content ideas strike at inconvenient and unexpected times. This light bulb turned on when the neighborhood’s lights were off. I pitched the idea the next business day to my employer, the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
Interviews with six in-house experts and four outside experts would follow and, months later, we published a recession retrospective with four chapters, a 22-event timeline, audio interviews, and more.
Of course, not all ideas worthy of becoming content find us. Most of the time we must find them. Here are five sources that can inspire ideas during any given year. (You can remember this list by using the acronym IDEAS.)
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: Out of Ideas? 13+ Tools to Spark Content Creation
Industry goings-on
Broadening the perspective of your content with industry context can lend your experts’ words more credibility and expand the audience for your content. Thus, industry sources are a surefire place to find and expand content ideas:
Start with a truth your colleagues are witnessing. Then call your industry trade group or other pros in your industry to ask if they see it. Remember, it can make sense to include external voices in your content because an ally in creating a piece is an ally in promoting it.
Look at something the industry says is happening. You can find these ideas in an industry publication, LinkedIn group, a report from an industry regulator or trade group, etc. Reveal through your content whether your experts see the trend, challenge, or opportunity, too.
Data
Not every organization produces research like the Federal Reserve, but you can dig up data-based ideas using these three options:
Conduct a survey and report its findings in infographics, articles, etc. Tell the story its data reveal: Thirty percent of business owners say x. The number of brides spending $25,000 or more on weddings is double what it was last year. Get the gist?
Use others’ data to drum up ideas and round out those ideas with what your experts are seeing. If real estate data from a third-party source show more people are building homes, for example, cite that and then incorporate what your construction experts see customers demanding today that they didn’t a year or five years ago.
Use informal numbers to reveal early trends. Don’t discount the importance of informal numbers your company alone observes: increased requests for some service, decreased spending on a product, and so on. These can be the genesis of pieces exploring how widespread the changes are and what the changes mean for your industry and its customers.
Events
Sometimes content ideas schedule themselves. If your organization takes tours or hosts events, cover them.
For example, a multimedia story by the Cleveland Fed reveals the details, meetings, and overarching reasons for a tour of eastern Kentucky taken by Federal Reserve officials.
You can treat more routine meetings and business processes as events too. Develop content around your experts demonstrating a process (say, the baking of your best-selling product) or detailing the steps to the foolproof audit, toddler haircut – you name it. Approach coverage of these events the way you would approach a live demo before an audience: Immerse the audience in what happens and any lessons learned.
The benefit to most event-rooted content is the opportunity to show your audience, not tell them, what happened and why it matters. In the next six months, what can you gain access to and show audiences that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience?
Associates
As a content marketer, you possess what others may not have – access. Access to your organization’s experts. Access to your organization’s clients. (Here, I call them all associates to make my IDEAS acronym work, but what I really mean is people.) People are and always will be a robust source of content ideas because what they see, hear, and know represents information your audience may want to see, hear, and know.
People are and always will be a robust source of #content ideas, says @mp_lazette. Click To Tweet
Interviews with your experts can both bestow content ideas and be content because interviews can be published as Q&As, traditional articles, videos, etc.
Conversations with clients can uncover how they’re solving problems – maybe with your product or service. Your audiences may find the choices your customers make enlightening. Changing customer tastes and budgets are timely and newsworthy content ideas. When you speak one client’s truth, you’re sure to speak another’s, which makes for content ideas that prove especially authentic and relevant.
Last but not least, interviewing your competitors and the other experts who serve your client base can generate worthwhile ideas, too. I always think of the DJ I hired for our wedding. She published interviews with other DJs and wedding experts on her blog, and that convinced me she was willing to go to considerable – and maybe unexpected – lengths to help brides like me pick the right first-dance song or ask the important, yet obscure, questions of wedding vendors. Publishing what others say also conveys a confidence and an altruism about you: “I’m so secure in the value I deliver that I’m telling you what others in my field have to say about this, too.”
Be confident enough to create #content interviewing competitors or other experts, says @mp_lazette. Click To Tweet
Seasonal and cyclical events
As a journalist who doesn’t want to tell the same story others already told, even in a different way, I’m not a fan of evergreen content ideas. I want to produce content reflective of today’s realities that makes people nod their heads while reading it and find immediately useful.
The good news is seasonal ideas can be made relevant and timely year in and year out. Some of my favorites:
Year in review: As a year ends, what can you say about what’s happened within your industry or company? What’s changed? What’s stayed the same?
Predictions for new year (or next season): What is likely to happen this year for your customer base, inside your industry, etc., and why does it matter? How can people prepare to meet coming challenges and take advantage of coming opportunities?
State of your industry or core business: Pick a time of year – perhaps just before a peak business time – that makes sense for publishing.
Watch the business cycle in addition to the calendar. When the economy is down, for example, it’s a fitting time to publish a traveling-on-a-budget series if your audience is people who like to travel. When the economy is up, wealth managers would do well to advise their audiences accordingly.
3 questions to ask before investing in a content idea
No matter where you uncover ideas, be it in bed as a tired new parent or at an event like Content Marketing World, run them through my chicken test. While a journalist, I used to ask those pitching me ideas the following:
Does our audience care about these chickens?
Are the chickens crossing the road now or are they about to?
Why and to whom does it matter that these chickens are crossing the road?
If you find a content idea or one finds you and it’s not relevant to your audiences, it’s not timely, and it doesn’t have a so-what, move on. Competition for your audiences’ time has never been higher. Only the strongest content ideas need apply.
Predictions for new year (or next season): What is likely to happen this year for your customer base, inside your industry, etc., and why does it matter? How can people prepare to meet coming challenges and take advantage of coming opportunities?
State of your industry or core business: Pick a time of year – perhaps just before a peak business time – that makes sense for publishing.
Watch the business cycle in addition to the calendar. When the economy is down, for example, it’s a fitting time to publish a traveling-on-a-budget series if your audience is people who like to travel. When the economy is up, wealth managers would do well to advise their audiences accordingly.
3 questions to ask before investing in a content idea
No matter where you uncover ideas, be it in bed as a tired new parent or at an event like Content Marketing World, run them through my chicken test. While a journalist, I used to ask those pitching me ideas the following:
Does our audience care about these chickens?
Are the chickens crossing the road now or are they about to?
Why and to whom does it matter that these chickens are crossing the road?
If you find a content idea or one finds you and it’s not relevant to your audiences, it’s not timely, and it doesn’t have a so-what, move on. Competition for your audiences’ time has never been higher. Only the strongest content ideas need apply.
