You’re my favourite Lewis blog and I got a moment of Lewis love after watching hungary 2013
Look Lewis had always had the fortune of having good cars, competitive cars even those last mclarens which were kind of bad and that’s why he was up until 2022 the only driver ever to have wins in every year he raced.
But saying he won his championships or his 103 races just because of the car it’s so unfair! Actually it’s unfair saying that of any champion because cars don’t drive by themselves, but just the fact that Lewis was able to put the W13 and the W14 literal matchboxes with wheels in podiums and race Piastri with the W15 I mean…
Very few can actually drive and get the most out of shitty cars, most wdcs needed perfect cars catered for them, but Lewis, like schumacher or verstappen or senna is so versatile to adapt!! Maybe that’s why he used to be a terror on the brakes.
Although, the way he brakes in high speed corners is so unique and I’m dying to see what he does with the oversteer in a ferrari, because while it was the end for vettel or prost, he would be very favoured by it. So, really, people saying he’s washed out know shit about f1.
thank you and thank you for sharing 😊 people are way too comfortable speaking on him whether they know stuff or not. anyway, can't wait to see what the future holds for us

for f1 asks, 9, 10, 25? 💗
9 - who is your dream driver line up?
this is an interesting question ooooo!! from a technical/realistic perspective… I’d obviously have maxie and then… lando, I think. if you put them both in a red bull, I think you’d get them p1 and p2 consistently. they both had a hell of a season, and I think this would have been landos best season if it wasn’t for maxie being an actual f1 god.
but… I think mr piastri is a future WDC. I am aware i’m biased towards lando bc he’s my fave, but I think that oscar and maxie in a team would be incredible. also, charles!! lestappen team mates would be unstoppable!! charlie in equal machinery would give maxie a run for his money!! also, alex albon!!
10 - do you have a controversial f1 take?
oh i’m sure I have many, babe… how long do we have?
maybe my most controversial is that I think maxie deserved to win abu dhabi 21. it was a mess of a race generally, but I do think he won because he was the better driver.
I also do think that maybe… just maybe… we should maybe put danny in a red bull seat… maybe. checo is fine, but I think a lot of his strength this season was because he had a rocketship for a car. I’d love to see what danny could do in a car like the rb19… I’d love to see if he’s still got it.
this is random but it just came to me - I don’t really like george?? I think he’s a raging tory and he is the human equivalent of white bread <3 but he is hilarious sometimes I’ll give him that
also - give mick a seat again!! someone!! anyone!! give liam lawson a seat asap!! I think nico is fine, I think kmag is fine, but these guys are literally doing nothing. think it’s time to switch it up soon. I’d love to see liam in a seat - he proved himself so incredibly in alpha tauri, so I’d love to see him settled and permanent and given a chance <3
25 - do you plan on attending a race this year?
I don’t!! there’s only one race in my country and it’s crazy, virtually impossible to get tickets. also, maybe this is an odd view, but I prefer watching it on tv!! I like that I get to see a thousand different angles, hear the team radios, see into the garages, hear the commentary etc. if you’ve ever seen the cars irl, it’s crazy.. they go past you so fast, you can barely tell who’s who. and you only see the one part of the track you’re sat at. I don’t doubt that the atmosphere is probably incredible at a race, but I’m happy watching on tv <3
thanks for sending these in, my love!!
f1 asks here!!

Why do people think george or another younger driver would go to merc and do automatically better than valtteri? it even sounds like an insult to lewis, like some kid would beat him easily right now? is this just young fandom narratives and favorites or are there any commentators actually saying that? (i don't get any race broadcasting, I just watch free highlight usually)
Buckle up folks, I’m about to make every party saaaaaaaad. Even ones who didn’t think they’re a part of this.
To answer your question we must return to the time when Lewis and Nico were teammates. Even then people were calling for Nico to be booted because he didn’t perform on the level Lewis did. We must remember the dynamics and what Mercedes was building at the time - they weren’t the dynasty yet, Lewis, a world champion and known prodigy, came in to replace 7-time WDC Michael Schumacher and Nico had won one race, so despite the fact that Nico had been in the team longer Lewis had a certain edge to him.
One thing must be accepted right away. Lewis’ titles are more valuable than most others’ for a variety of reasons. And each time he wins another one, the value increases exponentially.
What was Nico’s greatest weapon was his history with Lewis. They knew how they work and what weaknesses could potentially be exploited. And even if Nico says Lewis’ biggest weakness is his distracted slumps, he’s mistaken - it’s the fact that Lewis gets paranoid as shit. So whenever Lewis did hit that distracted slump and suddenly Nico performed above him, he became suspicious and thought the world is plotting against him.
“But Iikku, he’s like that today, too!” you say. “Where are you going with this?”
Ah, but he isn’t. Not to the same degree. 2016 marked a turning point to Lewis. He had to examine himself, see what was that cost him the title, what effect the unraveling of their friendship had on him. Pre-2016 Lewis and post-2016 Lewis are two different people because Lewis has learnt to get out of that paranoia or use it to his advantage. And the irony is that by beating Lewis in the same team, with the same car, Nico Rosberg made sure that no one else would ever be able to do the same.
So enter Valtteri. No race wins, considered a prodigy (more on that later). We can’t compare Nico and Valtteri without acknowledging the differences. Nico was racing against someone who had 1-3 titles and he knew intimately, and chose to take advantage of that even with the price that it had, ultimately hurting himself in the process as well. Valtteri has been racing a man who is going to equal Schumacher’s impossible records, in a team that has been built around Lewis. He has none of the advantages Nico had, and to make it even worse - he has this code of honour that he won’t play mind games, that he wants to beat Lewis fair and square.
Let’s take a break to consider F1 as a business. Which has more value - the 4th, 5th, 6th, and most importantly, 7th title of a driver with international appeal even to audiences others can’t appeal to, or the first title of a driver, that granted, does come in with a built-in brand and history that appeals to a large audience but still much smaller than the first driver’s?
I’m not saying it’s intentional, but I don’t believe top teams are able to treat their drivers 100% equal unless they know that other teams cannot match them on track at all - and that has not been the case with Merc since, oh, 2016.
And now we can get to George. I can honestly say this - you people don’t understand what you’re asking for when you want him the Merc seat.
Let’s compare Valtteri and George, because we have the data! George’s first two seasons can be compared to Valtteri’s first. In 2013 there were more cars on the grid and the dynamics were somewhat different but both cars are shitboxes, the team is(was?) the same and guess what - they’re literally achieving the same things. So I’m sorry to say this but if you want George to be Lewis’ teammate, you’re essentially asking for the same thing as now but instead of an experienced midfield, regular podium-getter guy you want to put someone without points against the GOAT.
Not to kink-shame, but that’s sadomasochism.
And to finish this off with making everyone sad, we’ll talk about the Lost Generation of F1.
What I mean with a generation here is more narrow than an actual generation - it’s about 4 years, people that have raced each other since kids, same age, same experiences, contributing to the same parts of history. The Lost Generation in question culminates in one year - 1989.
In 2013, there were three prodigies that were labeled “future world champions” - it was a fact *George Russell voice* that they’d win the title someday. Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, and Jules Bianchi had bright futures ahead of them and they were going to fight over the title against one another one day.
It hasn’t panned out that way.
Daniel and Valtteri are both above the age when you win your maiden title in the modern era - it’s not impossible, absolutely not, but you can’t deny the effect that Lewis’ dominance has had on their careers, and others’ as well. And if there’s a possibility for Lewis Hamilton to take titles 8, 9, 10 and beyond - what does it mean for these two?
“George Russell to Merc” is a cute idea, but it’s naïve to think he’d be able to match Lewis Hamilton now. Dissecting the fandom dynamic is a different essay (which I’d be able to make but I’d get like, murked), but the only thing that George Russell has going on for him on the grand scheme of things is his age and that he might be still around after Lewis isn’t.

What’s the future for Sri Lanka’s ‘lost’ population of whales?
Philip Hoare & Andrew Sutton - May 3, 2019
These transcendent, haunting images taken by photographer Andrew Sutton in the waters of the western Indian Ocean come close to understanding something of the magnificent and enigmatic sperm whale, an animal which still remains fairly unknowable to us, for all that we have exploited it for 500 years.
Don’t tell the other cetaceans, but I think sperm whales are the most beautiful mammals on the planet.
For millennia they have swum in every ocean, occupied only with their physical and cultural selves. They still hang there, dreaming. And according to the scientist Hal Whitehead, we may even have an inkling of those dreams.
Whitehead, who began his work observing sperm whales off Sri Lanka, has done much to advance our knowledge of why, as much as how, these creatures exist.
He wonders why they have such big brains and if they think about their existential existence. Might they, like us, have even evolved notions of religion to explain their life on earth?
These are wild ideas, I know, but these wild animals encourage them. Sperm whales turn you a little crazy. They go beyond the superlatives – the biggest brain, the deepest diving, the largest-toothed carnivore – to become something else. Theirs is a matriarchal society governed by loyalty and a sense of collective individuality in which their system of communicative clicks has an almost extrasensory role. Whatever they are, they are linked by sound, and their selves.
Imagine yourself in association with such an animal; to place yourself in physical proximity with her. This is what Sutton’s photographs do. Blue Planet Live might get us close to the action.
But there is something contemplative and, I would suggest, even spiritual about a deep, still photograph that speaks of these deep, still denizens. Diving with Sutton, I have spent time in the water with these animals in Sri Lanka, and the Azores. We’ve been echolocated by them. We’ve even seen them being hunted by killer whales.
Yet for all these close encounters, we are left with a sense of distance – even when a whale is barely a metre away (on one occasion in the Azores, we were nearly squashed between a pair of them). The water connects us physically, but disconnects us, too. There’s a gulf of natural and human history between us.
It is one of the many ironies about the great whales – whom we nearly reduced to extinction in the last century – that, as huge as they are, so few of us have seen them. That, as big as they are, they now rely on diminutive humans for their continuance.
Sri Lanka has been seen as a possible location for the original Eden, although its recent history has hardly borne that out. Whale-watching from the island has only recently taken off, after the end, in 2009, of the war with the Tamil Tigers (the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or the LTTE), which restricted tourist access to its waters.
Trincomalee, on the eastern coast of the island, close to the Jaffna peninsula, was particularly affected. Now it is a magnet for whale-watching, as is the southern tip of Sri Lanka and the rapidly developing resort of Mirissa, where there have been accusations of harassment of whales.
The discovery of a third cetacean hotspot on the island is now presenting new problems. Kalpitiya, a peninsula on the west coast of Sri Lanka, has been a kite-surfing venue for a decade or more. The presence of frequently-seen megapods of balletic spinner dolphins – up to 2,000 strong – has also drawn tourists. It would be hard to deny anyone the joy of these cetaceans.
Meanwhile, manta rays glide through the same warm waters.
Since 2010, the Sri Lankan marine biologist Ranil Nanayakkara has been observing unusually large pods of sperm whales off Kalpitiya from February to April. On one occasion, he counted at least 300 animals in one group.
Unlike western nations, Sri Lanka has never had a culture of using whales as a resource – until now. The whales that come to this part of the Indian Ocean each spring have hitherto escaped unwanted human attention. Indeed, sperm whales possess their own culture which has seen this sea as a safe place in which to forage, socialise, mate, or even to sleep.
Sutton is working with Vanessa Williams-Grey of Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s (WDC) Project Blueprint to mitigate the effects of human-whale interactions in Sri Lanka. In 2011 there only involved three or four whale-watch operators along Kalpitya’s 50km stretch of coast. When I lasted visited, in 2017, there were 20. Now there are at least 90.
WDC’s solution is to set up workshops for responsible whale-watching with local operators and to discuss ways that the fishing community can work around whales. In that process, they’re learning new contexts. Nanayakkara spoke to some of the elder fishermen, who have been working the waters for decades. They recall that the Kalpitiya peninsula was “fiercely controlled” by the LTTE who monitored catches. Breaking these laws risked a death sentence.
Ironically, a violent war helped preserve a fragile peace for these animals. One fisherman observed that the komoduwa – the sperm whales – “appeared to get stronger in numbers, indeed even stronger than before the war when there was more unregulated fishing in the area”. Others recall that before the widespread use of outboard motors, the whales were gathering in such dense numbers that the fishermen found it difficult to get out to sea and back.
An Edenic scene to conservationists – waters filled with whales – is a nuisance if you’re trying to catch fish. “You could walk on water, across their backs, moving from group to group,” said one fisherman, as if “they could form a bridge away from the troubles”. The widespread use of outboards solved a problem for the fisherman, but created a new one for animals whose principal sense is sound.
More urgently, Nanayakkara notes that now international film crews and mass tourism are affecting the whales’ behaviour – especially with increasing use of drones.
“This is the new threat for the animals,” he says. “When once they were inquisitive and came to the boats, now they spy-hop” – sticking their head perpendicularly out of the water to look for possible threats – “and shy away from the mosquito-sound of the speedboats.” It remains to be seen whether conservation and awareness schemes can address these issues.
Sutton, who has been photographing Sri Lanka’s whale population for a decade, has noted “big changes in the animals’ behaviour” with “constant spy-hopping when you are close”. With a new 60-bed hotel being built to house visitors, things are set to become less restful for Kalpitiya’s cetacean guests.
We may not know what sperm whales dream of, but I know what I dream about. They’re big and grey and I hope they can go on dozing, down there in the big blue sea.

We had a big technical sell off at the end of the day, basically as you can see on the chart, we tested the 10 day moving average and it was rejected. 1Investments in ADRs can involve special tax reporting and risks, including currency fluctuations and political, economic and social instability.
Hence, this is the best way a person can carry the trading of his securities in the safest and convenient manner. Arrange the boxes in such a way that there is some space between the stack of boxes and the plants. Tuesday there were more buyers than sellers. Top Gold stock for 2011. PZG support at $3.09 on Tuesday but the stock held $3.00. DryShips, Inc. (DRYS) - Shares of DryShips, Inc. jumped over $5.00 on Tuesday and are now back above the 200 day moving average. Tesla (TSLA) - Tesla (TSLA) is now trading back above the 200 day moving average. Netflix Inc is in overbought territory and should be shorted on a break down through the low of the day. Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS) - Shares of Goldman Sachs Group broke below $140 on Friday as the financials continue to be weak. Will the stock market go up or down on Friday. Keep tabs on the stock market futures which will predict the open on Friday. Western Digital Corporation (WDC) - Western Digital stock Jumps After Raising Its Quarterly Guidance. The Dow Jones and stock Market continue to skyrocket thanks to a Donald Trump victory. Last quarter, this generated $66 billion in sales and $4 billion in profits -- better than recent quarters thanks to higher oil prices.

Welcome Calla! I'm so glad you decided to join us and can't wait to see what you do with Bryan Yarde! Please create and send in your account within twenty four hours. Thank you!
OOC INFORMATION
Name or alias: Calla
Age and timezone: 18, PST
Activity level: Probably a six. I’m really working on bringing my activity up this month, so it could be higher, but I do aim to be on at least a couple days a week.
Experience:  Oh gosh, over three years now, I believe.
Your personal tumblr:  https://onethousandfireflies.tumblr.com
IC INFORMATION
Desired character: Bryan Yarde
Age/Sexuality of character: Twenty-one, Bisexual
Why do you want this character? I may not be a Disney buff, but I watched the Lady and the Tramp movies over and over as a kid, and I still have a ton of love for the characters. I’m also incredibly attracted to the broken characters who do bad things and hurt people because they don’t know any better, who lash out for no reason and act irrationally. I love getting to show off their more human side, to remind people that they really were just sad, scared kids who didn’t get enough love once. Plus, it would be a lot of fun to have him cause mischief around the college!
Second character you’d like if you don’t get this one: Belle Gedeon
Major/Minor: Mechanical Engineering major
Previous role-play account: https://Serecvdw.tumblr.com, https://older-not-wiser.tumblr.com
Role-play sample:
The rain beat down on the tin roof of the tiny building (more of a shed than anything else) that Bryan had claimed for himself, the sound magnified now that he was the only person around. He couldn’t say things were quiet–because when were things ever quiet in the city?–But that didn’t mean he hadn’t noticed the absence of Angela’s laugh, or Travis’s shouts of encouragement since they had been gone (how long had it been now, a year? Two? Ten?). The crumpled WDC acceptance papers clutched in his hand felt warm, a presence he couldn’t ignore. He’d never asked to go to college—or maybe he had, when he filled out the application for a laugh, because who would let a guy like him into their school? Well, he’d had never expected to go to college, and yet, now he’d achieved that. Not only achieved it, but won himself a spot in one of the most prestigious schools around. Something kids all over the world would die for. Maybe that’s why he was still considering it. For the first time in his entire life he had something they wanted. (He’d briefly considered that the acceptance had been sent to him by mistake, but he wasn’t above stealing these kinds of things from the people who had truly earned them, so did it really matter? No. It did.)
Would his desire to spite the Richie Rich’s of the world, to throw out a cosmic fuck you to all the people who had looked down on him for having less be enough to make him take the scholarship? The petty, vindictive part of him said yes. It was the part that usually led him to make questionable decisions late at night, so he’d tried to ignore it for as long as possible, but once the idea was in his head, there was no escaping. Why should everyone else get to pick and choose their future like they were playing god, or something? He wasn’t less than they were. (Dirtier, sure. Meaner–probably. But not less than.) He wasn’t even completely sure how the letter had reached him without a permanent address, but he figured it was probably karma. (Was that even how karma worked? He should have payed more attention.) So, it was a yes, then, as crazy as that sounded. What would people think of him; trailer park trash, street rat, good-for-nothing slum kid. Did he care what people thought of him? Only certain people. His fingers beat a steady tattoo of conflicted feelings out on his leg, crossed on the small cot he’d bummed from the back of a mattress store. They would look down on him, too, from their new ivory towers of money and excess, he decided. It seemed only right that he show them they weren’t special for using mommy and daddy’s money to buy their way into the academy. Whether they realized it or not, conning their way into the bleeding hearts of Mr. and Mrs. Billionaire didn’t make them better than him.
But what would happen to his—to their—home once he was gone? The thing he had fought so hard for that no one else seemed to care about would probably be raided within a week. Could he really stand having nowhere to return to? If he were being honest, it was a yes. Home had never been about the place anyway, so what did it matter if he had to move eventually. It was settled then, no reservations, no holds barred. He had no reason to turn down the slot at the school. Right? But he was still Bryan Yarde, chronic underachiever, who had never worked for anything serious in his life. And why should he have when just staying alive and out of jail was a full-time job? Still, the feeling that he might not succeed at this sat at the edge of his mind. It was one thing to never try. That just made him lazy. Lazy he could live with. Failure was different. Failure was something he had only experienced a few times in his short life, but none of the experiences were ones he wished to repeat. Or to relive, he told himself harshly. If he were a failure, he could no longer pretend that he was right and they were wrong. Did he really care about their opinions? Only when they thought badly of him. The other voice inside his head, smaller and hoarse from unuse shouted show them. Prove to them that they shouldn’t have left you behind. Remind them that you’re just as good as they are, even if you don’t live in a McMansion. You’re so scared to fail? So don’t.
He stood up off the cot and searched for a pen. Tomorrow he would accept the spot at the school, give it the good old college try. (Did that mean trying hard or hardly trying? He hoped it was the former.) He wouldn’t fail because he couldn’t fail here. He didn’t know if he wanted his former friends to regret moving on, or to realize that they weren’t better than he was, but either way he was certain he could show them. He was a street rat through and through, and he knew how to play dirty to get what he wanted.
A song that you feel explains your character and why: this was overkill but I couldn’t pick just one
Another Life to Lose – Greg Laswell
Wake Up – Eden
Youth – Daughter
Anything else?:
Headcanons!
Bryan picked mechanical engineering for a major because he knew he would fail if he tried anything remotely academic. But fixing things with his hands, building and creating and destroying? That he could do easily.
For all of his bravado, Bryan does know–albeit deep down–that he drove his friends away. He realizes that he’s been unreasonable, and in some cases, cruel. He just doesn’t know how to fix that. Anger is the only way he’s ever known to express himself, and this situation is no different from any of the others (even if his anger should really be directed towards himself).
Although Bryan may pretend not to care about academics, he’s actually pretty fascinated by the courses he’s taking. Learning how the world works, how people’s brains work, why the universe looks the way it looks is endlessly amazing to him. He’s never understood things quite this way before, never come across so many people who are merely interested in handing him information without strings attached. He likes it in ways he can’t describe, but he can’t help feeling like he’s an imposter here at the school.
Despite what his advisors and professors say, he’s pretty sure he’ll end up right back on the street after he finishes school, but hey. At least he’s got these next couple years of housing and food figured out. He can worry about what to do with his useless degree later.

Fed Sells Sanctuary; A Flash in the Pan
Fed Sells Sanctuary; A Flash in the Pan:
The Fed Sells Sanctuary
“Oh, the heads that turn make my back burn.” — The Cult, She Sells Sanctuary
As the coronavirus began to spread in the U.S. over the weekend, we got our first look at just how economically devastating the disease can be … in China.
In fact, Chinese manufacturing all but evaporated in February, with the Caixin/Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) plunging to 40.3. Economists were looking for a reading of 45.7 from this economic bellwether.
Official numbers were even worse, as the Chinese government reported a PMI reading of 35.7 for the month. Readings above 50 indicate economic expansion, while readings below indicate contraction.
And if that wasn’t enough, data also revealed that gaming revenue in Macau fell 88% in February.
China is in a bad way — that much is clear. But there’s hope on the horizon…
World central banks appear to be on the verge of diving into the fray to help assuage economic conditions, and investors. On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank would “use our tools and act as appropriate to support the economy.”
Italy’s economic minister said Sunday that the government would drop $4 billion to ease the COVID-19 impact on the economy, while the Bank of England said this morning that it would take “all necessary steps.”
It’s like some international-banking version of Voltron is forming here to battle the evil coronavirus forces!
Analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) even said that they believe the U.S. Fed would cut interest rates sooner rather than later to prevent a virus-induced financial meltdown.
“There will be a coordinated easing across the major central banks and, possibly, the People’s Bank of China and the [Hong Kong Monetary Authority],” said Bank Policy Institiute’s chief economist Bill Nelson. “The cut will be substantial, at least 50 and possibly 75 basis points.”
The Takeaway:
First off, let’s applaud the market and global central banks for finally taking COVID-19 seriously. I mean, after seeing how the virus devastated China’s manufacturing output, it’s kind of hard not to.
It’s important to note, however, that this thing’s just getting started. Economies around the globe will be tested. The Federal Reserve can cut interest rates all it wants (well … with rates sitting at 1.5%, not all it wants), and that may calm investors. But interest rate cuts won’t keep thousands of workers from getting sick, which would affect economic growth and consumer spending.
Here’s what I’m getting at: While the markets corrected nearly 12% across the board in the past week, we’re likely to see a few more jitters going forward. Last week’s shocker was Wall Street’s attempt to price in COVID-19’s impact on growth.
Barring any major catastrophes, there will be a few more adjustments here or there as the market adjusts to the reality of COVID-19 in the U.S. market. But, all in all, the worst for the market should be over.
I could be wrong — I hope I’m not wrong — but now appears to be a good time to start bargain hunting. I’m not talking speculation on momentum stocks. I’m talking snapping up long-term growth companies that will endure even after the coronavirus is gone.
There are quite a few of these out there right now, and Banyan Hill expert Jeff Yastine is the man to follow.
With the whole biotech sector screaming “pandemic!” there’s never been a better time to find undiscovered biotech diamonds. Today, Jeff has his eye on one biotech stock that he believes is set to soar — and it still trades at bargain-basement prices.

Good: Refresh Your Memory
In the past week, few sectors have been hit harder than tech. With many tech supply lines running through China, it’s understandable. But Baird analyst Tristan Gerra would like you to … ahem … refresh your memory.
Gerra turned bullish on a trio of DRAM/NAND flash memory makers this morning, noting that “flash pricing positive outlooks remain unchanged despite current demand weakness in China.”
In a note to clients, Gerra upgraded Micron Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) to neutral, lifted Seagate Technology PLC (Nasdaq: STX) to outperform and boosted Western Digital Corp. (Nasdaq: WDC) two notches to overweight.
I have to believe that Gerra is onto something here. We have a smartphone upgrade cycle coming with 5G, and we have a game console upgrade cycle coming with the PlayStation 5 from Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and the Xbox Series X from Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) — both of which use drives that run on flash memory.
There’s some inventory at flash memory suppliers still in the pipeline. However, with supply chain disruptions across China, that inventory will only last so long. This means pricing power for flash makers such as Micron, Seagate and Western Digital. And pricing power is good.
Better: Bear Turns Bull on GE
It seems the predictions for General Electric Co.’s (NYSE: GE) demise were overly exaggerated. As a result, many in the brokerage bunch are now singing a different tune on the company.
This morning, Stephen Tusa, a JPMorgan analyst and a longtime GE bear, joined the bullish choir with three simple words: “We were wrong.”
Tusa lifted his rating on GE to neutral and raised his price target to $8, citing GE’s better-than-expected performance in 2019. But, while Tusa may no longer be a GE bear, you’ll notice that his target is about 26% below GE’s current trading range.
The JPMorgan analyst may have admitted that GE isn’t as bad as he expected, but he noted that “we continue to see structural concerns in the key power market, as well as peakish fundamentals in aviation.”
So, GE isn’t out of the woods just yet. But the company has potential if it remains on its current growth and restructruing path. As such, GE looks like a bargain at these levels.
Best: A Little Bird Told Me…
… that running two companies at once might not be the most productive thing in the world. That little bird? Elliott Management Corp.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Elliott has taken a $1 billion stake in Twitter Inc. (Nasdaq: TWTR). The activist investment firm looks to flood Twitter’s board with its own nominees … reportedly in hopes of ousting CEO Jack Dorsey.
Dorsey also heads payment processor and point-of-sale disruptor Square Inc. (NYSE: SQ).
The oddity of Elliott’s move is that it comes just after Twitter’s quarterly revenue topped $1 billion for the first time ever last quarter. However, earnings on the quarter fell 50% year over year, which means Dorsey’s Twitter is spending quite a bit of cash.
Apparently, Elliott thinks Twitter can do better at returning some of that cash to investors. This will be an interesting and potentially lucrative situation to watch.
Look, in order to be a stock market investor you HAVE to have some level of optimism about the future. Remember: more people wake up trying to make the World better than make it worse and that, my friends, is worth investing in.
— Michael Antonelli, Baird equity sales trader.
I know that Great Stuff has been all over the “doom and gloom” on the coronavirus lately. But I feel the need to set the record straight. I’m not a bear at heart.
I’m a market bull … but I’m a realistic bull.
Great Stuff’s goal over the past month was to prepare you for the 12% dip that followed the COVID-19 outbreak. We knew that, once Wall Street finally woke up to the risk that this virus posed, things would get bad quickly … and you needed to be prepared.
If you’re a buy-and-hold type, you needed to know what was coming so you could hedge your positions over the short term. If you’re a short-term speculative investor who likes to jump on red-hot momentum stocks, you needed to know so you could take profits and get out of Dodge.
What I like about today’s Quote of the Week is the optimism behind it.
People are, on the whole, trying to better themselves and make the world a better place. Stocks and markets always trend higher over the long term. These are important things to remember — especially in the middle of a possible pandemic such as the coronavirus.
That said, you can have a positive, long-term bullish outlook and still protect yourself over the short term. It’s just common sense. And that’s Great Stuff’s ultimate goal, I think: common sense. (Though, a heavy dose of humor makes it all go down more easily.)
Until next time, good trading!

Joseph Hargett

Local Activists Decry Thailand’s Dolphin Bay Phuket
Phuket, one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, is famous for its beaches, clear waters, and rollicking nightlife. As a region that sees more than 3 million tourists annually, Phuket offers much more than this. But not everything is as sunny as the beaches. Dolphin Bay Phuket is a relatively new aquarium, built in 2014. The facility has come under fire for housing captive dolphins, conducting daily dolphin shows, and offering swim-with-the-dolphins experiences in enclosed pools. Visitors can also have their picture taken with a dolphin on a “stage.”
What’s wrong with captive dolphins?
So, what’s the problem? As with any tourist attraction that includes direct contact with captive wild animals, that it is not how these animals — be they elephants or dolphins — are meant to live their lives. Living in captivity and being forced to perform is stressful harmful, and disrespectful to them. They can’t swim freely, hunt for food, or fulfill any other natural instincts. These are key to their mental and physical health. According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDC), captive whales and dolphins are prone to mental and physical stress. This stress impairs their immune systems. Despite living in an environment free of predators and other natural risks, captive animals live far shorter lives than their free counterparts.
The shorter life span also means that aquariums must often bring in new animals to replace those that have died. Capturing these animals from the wild is often far from ethical, as evidenced by the award-winning documentary “The Cove.”
Adding people to small pools to swim with the animals and take photos only makes matters worse. There is no comparison between swimming or diving with wild dolphins — who may freely seek out human interaction and are free to leave — and forcing animals to “play” with humans in enclosed pools.
The problem with Dolphin Bay Phuket
At Dolphin Bay Phuket, the holding pools are much too small for the animals to stay healthy, per many observers including local dive instructor and activist Natasha Eldred. While there are separate isolation pools for ill animals, there is no direct channel between the main pools and the isolation pools. This means that the animal handler can, only with great difficulty, transport the sick animals to the isolation pools. The entire place, says Eldred, meets only the bare minimum of regulations. The facility looks like a throwback to a 1980s animal-show design. And since even the best, most updated of these cetacean entertainment facilities is unsuitable for long-term animal keeping, Dolphin Bay Phuket is likely to be detrimental to the health of its dolphins.
There have been local protests against the dolphinarium since it opened, but these have proven unsuccessful. And as public protests are illegal in Thailand, there is only so much local activists can do. The best — and effectively only — way to ensure the facility fails is to educate the locals and tourists. Urge them to not give their money to such a venue.
As scuba divers, or simply as human beings who care about animal welfare, we should never visit venues that offer direct interaction with animals in captivity, such as elephant rides or swimming with captive dolphins. And we should be skeptical of any tourist offerings including animals, from zoos to whale-watching trips. Do your research before you participate in any activity like this. And if you’re traveling to Thailand any time in the future, do the dolphins a favor and strike Dolphin Bay Phuket from your must-visit list.
