cw: cursing, arguing, use of Y/N, you/yours pronouns used, reader flinches, hurt/comfort, Wilbur being kind of a dickhead, mentions of past abuse, use of a pet name at the end
a/n: hey guys! Quick little story: I watched a video that was basically Wilbur getting mad for like 3 or so minutes, & the first clip was Wilbur pretending to be angry at someone who was interviewing him, & Wilbur yells very loudly & I flinched & I thought "that's a banger idea for a fic, good job, me!" so yeah!! :) here's the video if you wanna see
You & Wilbur both had terrible days. You didn't get a wink of sleep because of work & stress, & the entire week, you two were snippy with each other. You didn't blame him for any of it; he was stressed, & he was tired. Today, however, you were a little angry with him for it. You two had been extra snippy last night & had an argument, & that led to Wilbur choosing to sleep on the couch, & he didn't give you your good morning kisses & hugs when he left for the studio. He just said muttering a goodbye. Not once, in all of the years of dating you, did he ever not kiss you before he left. Even if you were screaming at him the night before or you were both pissed off at each other, he'd still do it.
When you finally got home from work, you found Wilbur sitting at his desk in the office, a mug of coffee next to his laptop. He was tapping his foot repetitively & he looked tired. His hair was tousled & his eyelids were drooping. You walked over to grab the coffee mug & he grabbed your wrist, not hard enough to hurt you.
"I'm still drinking that," he sighed.
"Hello to you too," you replied. He sighed again. "I'm just refilling your coffee for you."
"I didn't ask you to do that," he snapped. "I can do it myself."
"What is your issue today?" you said, somewhat annoyed.
"What's my issue?!" he said, raising his voice slightly. "What's your issue?! You've been such an ass to me this week! You're not making the stress any fuckin' easier!"
"Neither are you!" you said, your voice also raising. "You're being an ass, too! A massive one!"
"Oh, j--FUCK OFF!" he said, now yelling. "Fuck off! You think--you just sat there thinkin' you're tough shit, didn't you, fuckin' wanker?"
You froze. He's never yelled at you like that before.
"I-I can leave & let you be if you want--" you started in a small voice.
"Oh, so you're just fuckin' dumping me now?!" he shouted. "Is that what you're doing?! You're trying to break up with me?! What a fuckin' load of bollocks!"
"No no no no!" you said, still using that soft voice. "I-I was just going into another--"
"What, are you gonna try & cheat on me?!" he yelled, somehow getting louder. "Is that what this is, you fuckin' wanker?"
"Not at all!" you said quietly. "Not at all! I wouldn't dream of--"
"SPEAK UP!" he nearly shrieked as he raised his hand. "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!"
You flinched & covered your head as you shook & were on the verge of tears. He was most likely going to hit you. That's what the last few did.
Wilbur froze. He lowered his hand & looked at you with shock. Tears began to fill his eyes.
"Did you just flinch?" he said, almost a whisper. "Love, I--I wasn't going to hurt you. I would never."
You didn't say anything. You just sobbed.
"Oh my God, darling," he whispered, his voice cracking. He moved your hands away from your face & wrapped his arms around your waist as he took in the sight of your trembling lips & tearful eyes.
"I'm not like him, love," he whispered, tears rolling down his cheeks. "I would never even dream of hurting you, okay? I'm so sorry I scared you. I shouldn't have yelled."
& you broke down in his arms as he buried your head in his chest & let out a few small cries of his own. You both mumbled apologies to each other constantly as you hugged each other like your lives depended on it. Suddenly, he picked you up bridal style & placed you on the bed.
"Wait right here, okay?" he said, brushing the hair away from your face. "I'm going to run the store."
He came back a few moments later with a full grocery bag. When you opened the bag, you saw your favorite snacks, drinks, candy, a plushie, & a pair of slippers.
"Wil, this is too much--" you started. He cut you off with a gentle kiss.
"Nothing is too much for my sunflower," he smiled. "Now, what movie do you want to watch?"
For the rest of the night, you two watched your favorite movies & TV shows, & when it was time to go to bed, you two cuddled & talked & giggled with each other until you fell asleep in his arms.

Just wanted to say thank you so, so much for writing Fate's Favourite. I actually found and loved your blog before I ever found that fanfic, and it was a delight to know it was written by you, and it's so clear how you've improved. But Fate's Favourite will always have a part of my heart, because it's the first story I've read that just has a platonic friendship that feels as equal as a romantic one without being romantic? And as a lonely aroace that means everything. EVERYTHING. (1/2)
(2/2) I had a conversation today that reminded me that I'm never going to have the queerplatonic relationship I want that I've always wanted since I was a child, and how it makes me want to write one so much more, but then I've never managed to write the story I've wanted to write my entire life because I'd always be afraid of being accused of queerbaiting or people just going, 'but it's actually just a gay romance this isn't what friendship looks like' and just. Thank you for Fate's Favourite.
--
Wow. FF is a blast from the past!
You are very welcome.
Apologies for the long, self-indulgent reply.
That story was one of the first things I ever properly wrote and my first (maybe second?) truly long-form story ever. I thus have a soft spot for it, even though in terms of craft and technique I can't so much as look at it without seeing all my numerous beginner flaws and cringing and can't bring myself to actually point people to it. Much improvement since then, as you say!
(An excellent reminder that writing is a learned skill.)
Anyway. The other interesting thing about that story is that I wrote it before I'd ever heard of asexuality or realised that was what I was. I was a very confused teenager being bombarded with this pressure to have crushes and date people and all that general societal messaging we have about romance being the most important thing ever. Especially in YA.
So I'd go home after school and write that story.
Obviously it's more unhealthy than what I'd want for myself in my real life, but the sheer intensity of feeling and importance of the platonic main relationship was something I had also never seen before but craved. And still crave, honestly. So I feel ya.
As for queerbaiting...
A lot of readers at the time told me they viewed the story as 'pre-romance'. AKA, it's a romantic relationship and they haven't realised it yet for whatever reason. They mostly didn't mean that badly, I don't think.
(Although I sometimes think though that if the term 'queerbaiting' was as broadly known and misused then as it is now that I would have been mercilessly lambasted out of ever writing again! And I wouldn't have known how to articulate the fact that wasn't, actually, what I was doing. I think we need to be kind to new writers. I think 'content creator' is gutting something vital in the ecosystem. But that's another rabbit hole.)
So I've been there. It happens. But other people's bad takes didn't change the story and what it meant to me as a lonely ace teenager or what it meant to you.
I have had readers before make a similar comment to you about how it was the first time they got to see something so important to their heart portrayed.
That matters so much more than whatever people say about your writing who don't need it.
Which is why we have to keep writing the stories.
Even if it's clumsy and raw. Even if it's the first thing you've ever tried. Even if it's (especially if) it's a messed up fantasy straight from the most primal part of your brain.
If we don't write it, it won't exist.
And that's so much worse.
The nay-sayers can come to the party, but it wasn't thrown in their honour.

21 for the oc ask game, and congratulations!
Thank you! We've been pretty quiet about it on tumblr because it's been eating up 110% of our entire brains in every other part of our lives.
Very excited! But oh god the logistics leading in.
How does your OC handle relationships, platonic or otherwise? Do they forge bonds easily, or prefer to not get attached?
Benny is a deep classic romantic at heart. She's not terribly demonstrative with her feelings, but when she lets herself fall for someone, she falls fast and hard. She's prone to insecurities in her romantic life--she's ace and extremely sex-repulsed, sex is never going to be part of any of her romantic relationships, and that's a deal-breaker for a lot of people. She tends to hold back on letting herself fall for anyone if she's not...sure they mean it, when they say they understand what that means.
Rinda's courtship with her wife was deeply emotional and extremely quiet. They worked very, very well together in the field--with Rinda acting as her secret-keeper and sharing an intense mutual respect for one another's honor, courage, and kindness. Rinda saw how Talet acted around her apprentice-slash-ward, a traumatized young mage with debilitating anxiety and PTSD around using her own magic; Talet saw how Rinda handled herself, heard her talk about her kids and her late sister. They didn't make a move right away--but they kept in touch, arranged to work together again a few months later, and during a quiet moment in that adventure, they sat down and had the conversation they'd both known would need to happen.
It was a very honest, earnest, adult relationship from the start--tender beyond words, but not dramatic.
Rinda is much more demonstrative with her platonic relationships. She'll roughhouse with Talet's daughter, toss her own kids in the air, rib them and their respective partners; but with her wife, it's usually very quiet and soft and private.
Kite mostly-but-not-entirely left her family for ethical reasons, and is a walking disaster of a woman when it comes to romance. Mostly it's that she was.........it's kind of the gnollish equivalent of having been raised in a wealthy, very blandly American Protestant household. Nothing exciting, no crazy uncles dropping slurs at Thanksgiving dinner, but still very rigid in ways the family didn't even seem to notice. Gender roles enforced not by violence but by stifling homogeneity and constant very reasonable requests not to rock the boat or by persistent "confusion" and open discomfort and "concern" any time you deviate from an extremely narrow norm.
(The people who wholeheartedly believe that girls are just as good as boys! Girls can do anything boys can do! They would LOVE it if their little girl grew up to be a doctor or a scientist or a CEO or a cop! They say while equally cheerfully taking a toy horse out of their son's hands while explaining that no no sweetie, that's for girls, we'll get you a different one that's for boys instead? Flip the gendered expectations--gnolls are hyenas, so females are expected to be dominant and aggressive while males are meant to be submissive homemakers--and you've got Kite's family.)
So, she was raised in the privileged position in that kind of household. Her family wholeheartedly accepts and supports her being gay! But she herself was raised with....expectations for what romance looked like. She knows this about herself, that she's internalized a lot of normative bullshit, but that doesn't make it....easy, to stop being afraid.
Vulnerability is hard for her. She's the second-eldest daughter of a strong clan. She was meant to be strong, confident, desirable, her romance was meant to be her having her pick of any of the several pretty girls who'd be falling over themselves to catch her eye. She knows that's toxic and awful. She doesn't want it. But she doesn't....know how else to be. She's trying to learn.

Alphabet soup A
A is for Arie
Tumblr media
Arie is one of my sweet, harmless boys. He's a cat... thing lol, I never really got specific. He's a coffee aficionado, and moved to Seattle with his now ex Jeremy (it was an amicable split tbh). He'll make you the best coffee you've ever had.
Arie's story comes from a time when I was worried about coming out to my family. Arie is gay (more specifically homoromantic, and ace, though I didn't know that was a thing at the time), and was kicked out by his parents. He did okay for himself -- his best friend is Quinn, and she's small but she's scrappy, and he fell in with Jeremy. And now, of course, he has a group of loyal people that he happily calls his family.
Anyway, Arie's one of the stable of even-keeled soft boys that I have, and I love him.
Thanks for the ask!

Newsletter #94 - The week of Saturday December 4th 2021 - Saturday December 11th 2021
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! I am still in this fandom to a certain point, but twice-weekly posts (and finding the information save the ones you lovely people send me) is beginning to take its toll on the gazillion other things that are lining up. I am considering ‘abdicating’ the newsletter if I can find someone who is willing to pick it up and run it. If you do, please contact me through [email protected]. There’s a gmail to take over, a twitter, a tumblr and even an instagram I never got around to using. As well as a pillowfort account and a trello. I will still be around to assist if needed and I WILL vet applications. If you've ever started shit in this fandom, I'll probably know and the answer will be NO. I have too much respect for the users of this newsletter to just go for the first and best offer.
If no one is interested, I may either retire the newsletter when 2022 hits or at least put it on hiatus. Or possibly change the style of it to reblogging rather than listing.
If you know of an event going on or coming up, feel free to let me know :)
Go forth, have fun! Create much!
If you run a GO tumblr with recs or resources, let me know. Running a zine and want to get the word out? The inbox is always open.
If any discord servers go AWOL or you feel one should be added (remember to clear it with the MODS first) feel free to let me know. As always, the email [email protected] is always open for business.

If you have an event you want to add to the calendar and the weekly Newsletter, don’t hesitate to let me know either in the asks/PM or via ineffableplanner (@) gmail dot com.
Also, feel free to share this post. This blog is NOT for reblogging of events, but for listing and perhaps making it a bit easier for everyone to keep track of these events before they’ve come AND gone ;)
Disclaimer: I am not running any of these zines, events or servers (in the few cases where I am involved in the mod work, I will make note of this). Please use your common sense and if you feel you’ve entered an event/zine/server/community you feel uneasy about, do not hesitate to step away from it. You may let me know if there’s a problem with one, but please know that I am not able to police every single one of them, nor will I play God in other people’s domains. I will let the mods know there is a problem (without mentioning your name and if it’s grave enough, take the link off), but please do not expect miracles and do not use me as your tool to get back at servers/server mods for personal reasons. I abhor being pulled into fandom wars and kerfluffles.

Hii! I see you've read RWRB (which means you obviously have impeccable taste) and was wondering if you could recommend any more LGBTQ+ books? Thank you!!
OH MY GOD I HAVE SO MANY!! It really depends on what genre you’re interested in and what you like; I’ll sort of try to break it down that way (and not just rec every gay book I’ve ever read lmao)
General fiction:
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz is about two Mexican boys growing up in El Paso in the late 1980s and the writing style is absolutely incredible. It was the first Gay Book(tm) I remember and I spent months of 2012-2013 trying to find a copy and it was 100% worth it.
Simon Vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda by Becky Albertalli. We know it, we love it, I wanted to include it anyway.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee is a historical fiction (leaning on fantasy) romp about a boy in the 18th century going on his grand tour with the best friend he’s in love with; the sequel stars his aro/ace sister. Bi lead, Black gay love interest, and a sequel about the importance of girl friendships.
I’m on page four of Gail Wilhelm’s Torchlight to Valhalla but I love the writing style and the fact that it’s a lesbian book from 1938 that apparently ends happily almost made me cry so there’s that.
anything by Virginia Woolf, but especially Orlando, which is a love letter to her girlfriend.
Soft Place to Fall by Ba Tortuga is a fun gay cowboy romance; it’s dumb and sappy and predictable and fantastic.
Sci-Fi / Fantasy
THIS IS WHERE I THRIVE this is my wheelhouse so sorry if I get carried away lol
anything by Sarah Gailey. Their Upright Women Wanted is about queer librarian spies in a futuristic wild west. The American Hippo series (River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow) is about queer hippo wranglers in an alternate 19th century. Magic for Liars is a murder mystery set in a magic school, perfect if you’re trying to ditch She Who Must Not Be Named but still want your fun magic school itch scratched.
Nottingham by Anna Burke is a lesbian retelling of Robin Hood; I’m still working through it but I’m pretty sure all the merry men are queer women and I couldn’t be happier about it.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is absolutely fantastic; it’s got an entirely Latinx cast with a trans lead and a ghost love interest; 15/10 almost made me cry.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo has that casual queer rep that I absolutely adore. Like yeah sometimes you need a book about Being Queer but sometimes you also need a heist where the badass gunslinger casually goes “oh yeah not just girls” and steals a tank, you know?
This is very I’m A Child Of The Late 90s/ Early 2000s but Tamora Pierce was huge for me growing up. She clearly stuffed as many queer characters into her world as publishers would let her, and recently she’s confirmed fan theories about even more queerness (ace/aro characters, trans readings, etc) in her work.
Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness was published in 1969 and treats gender as a fluid thing; I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my bedside table and I’m very excited to get to it.
Poetry
all of it straight people don’t get poems
Badger Clark was a gay cowboy poet; I love his stuff so much. “The Westerner” made me absolutely feral and “Others” gutted me.
Wilfred Owen is best known for his work about WWI, but “Maundy Thursday” and “How Do I Love Thee” are absolutely incredible.
Whitman wrote poems about being gay and was one of the more iconic queer voices of the 19th century, at least in literary circles.
Byron was an icon and also incredibly queer.
Sappho is the iconic one; Anne Carson’s translation of her work (If Not, Winter) is fantastic and the one I’d personally recommend.
Classics
If you’re down to read between the lines do I have some books for you
Stoker was gay (and wrote thirsty letters to Whitman), and no one can convince me that Dracula is a straight book. Arthur and Quincey were dating thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.
The Iliad is long and complex but also Achilles and Patroclus wanted their ashes mixed when they died (fellas...)
anything by Wilde but especially A Portrait of Dorian Gray.
Les Miserables has a character who “admired, loved, and venerated” another man, and who “took great care not to believe in anything” but said other man (fellas...). There’s also an entire page about how the lead has never felt any form of love other than familial (fellas... is it aro to spend a whole page talking about how you’ve never loved anyone).
I haven’t read Moby Dick but I know there’s like three pages about how much the narrator loves his crewmate (fellas...)
Nonfiction
A lot of people are scared of nonfic but I’m gonna let you in on a secret: you don’t have to read the whole book. Pick and choose chapters that interest you, put it down for a year, whatever. Nonfic’ll be there for you.
Portrait of a Marriage by Nigel Nicolson is a look into his parents’ open relationship and his mother’s relationship with Virginia Woolf; it’s a gorgeous exploration of the various ways that love and marriage can be flexible and it changed how I look at relationships.
A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski is a good intro to queer history.
We Are Everywhere by Matthew Riemer and Leighton Brown is a great look at the Stonewall Era and the time after especially, and it’s full of incredible pictures. They also run @/lgbt_history on insta and 10/10 for that.
Love and Resistance: Out of the Closet and Into the Stonewall Era by Jason Baumann is fantastic too; it’s got pictures and short descriptions of what’s happening in them. Maybe not a first place, but if you know the general scope of the queer rights movement it’s a fantastic thing (or if you don’t and you’re ready to google lmao).
My Dear Boy or anything else by Rictor Norton is incredible. My Dear Boy is a collection of gay love letters; he’s also got books on queer culture in 18th century London and queering the Gothic. You can find a lot of his stuff online here and My Dear Boy specifically here.
If you want more/ something more specific, don’t hesitate!! I work in a library and I’m always finding new gay stuff and I love it.

Gang-Related 1
Pairing: Ann-Marie x Black!OC
Genre: Romance and Angst.
Summary: Journey Nelson is in need of money, quick and fast. She's enlisted by her friend to become a dealer for one of the most fearful Gangs in their city. She meets the leader, Ann-Marie and sooner than later they begin a romance that is doomed to burn up in flames.
Note: I might as well start dropping some of my lesbian fics over here. I'm finding it difficult finding black gay fics 🥺. If y'all have any, don't be shy- DM it too me!
"Hurry the fuck up, Journey!" Tika yelled to me breathlessly, her feet slapping against the pavement just as fast as mine.
I looked both ways before crossing the street, more sweat gathering on my hands. My heart drummed in my chest the darkness surrounding me furthering the anxiety I felt.
2 months ago I'd never be out this late but things had changed and I had changed. I was desperate and when you're desperate you become a person you've never known before.
We came up to a building shrouded in darkness, slipping into its shadows. Under the umbrella, Tika knocked on the door three times, grabbing my arm to making me stand back. We waited for what seemed like longer than a few minutes when a slot under the door opened and Tika slipped something to the other side.
It opened seconds later and a girl glared at both Tika and I as we came in. A small number of girls covered the entire area leaning on furniture. Some were counting money, others were packaging- all were talking but it came to a stop when I stepped into the room.
I puffed out my chest to seem a little tougher under their scrutinizing gaze but I still felt like I was posing. Pretending to be hard when I was really easily breakable.
"Who the fuck is this?"
"Someone new."
"You got cleared for that?" The girl with green hair questioned, leaning on her hip.
"You about to get cleared for an ass-whooping, if you keep asking questions. "Tika gritted through her teeth. "Where's Ann?"
"Where she always is- in the back."
"Thank you." Their eyes had yet to leave me, burning holes into my back as we walked down the long hall. I started to feel more restless, the closer we got to the back and I couldn't control the twitching in my body.
Knocking on a new door, Tika glanced my way sucking her teeth at the sight of my shaking hands.
"You need to get your nerves together. You can't look nervous in front of this girl- you'll look like a pussy."
"I can't help it." I said wiggling my fingers."My body shakes on its own."
"What are you scared for anyway?" Chewing on my bottom lip, I felt embarrassed to say.
"What if she doesn't like me?"
"That's what the hell you're worried about!?"
"She has to like me- if I'm gonna work for her, she has to think of me in a positive light. That's how a good, boss-employee relationship works."
"Fuck Journey," She rubbed the space between her eyes." I forget how you are sometimes."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Before she could answer the door opened and a single person moved out of the way showcasing who we needed to see. The Ann-Marie, sat on a table counting her stacks, the hard-earned money she worked for.
You could consider her enigma- her male counterparts taking her as a joke when it came to selling and handling a kingdom. Nothing was funny about how she moved, however, and she proved herself to more ruthless than expected.
Ann-Marie isn't a terrifying name but she makes it scary. She brings dread just by a mere mention and that's power a single person holds. Power that surrounds her crew and everything else she does.
Tika asked me why I was so afraid- the reputation before me proceeded all things especially fear.
"Tika Ray!"Ann gave a fake warm welcome, her eyes bouncing onto me as an intruder."I see you bringing visitors unannounced now."
"I'm bringing you, workers."
"I didn't ask for that." Her mouth was drawn into a frown, prepared to dig into Tika.
"We always could use the help." She attempted before a scoff was heard.
"So, you think we're struggling by ourselves?" Ann asked accusingly, Tika's foot beginning to jump.
"No, I just think-"
"You think about everything else but never think to ask." She pointed at her head, her nails shaped like claws. "Never think to check-in with the person actually in charge."
"Ann-"
"I don't wanna address this in-front of company."She said paying me attention. "Let me hear from her why she's here." Tika started to talk again but Ann raised her hand, cutting her off.
"I wasn't speaking to you, I was speaking to her."
Ann was so intimidating, even with how tiny she was she still had an aura that made her feel bigger, taller, maybe even stronger. She hopped down from the table she sat on and walked up to me, staring straight into my eyes. Her eye contact was scary and made me feel inferior but like I was the only thing in the room.
"Why you here, baby?" Her tone became soft, truly catching me off guard.
"Tika told me you could give me work." I gulped down air before continuing."Easy and quick money."
"That's all you want? Just to pull weight?"
"Yes." I said confidently, hoping Ann couldn't see through my front.
"You don't look built for it, honestly." She clasped her hands together, standing straighter. "But none of us are when we start out."
"I can prove that I'm useful. I run really fast and I've always been good at math." I listed off, looking more awkward than qualified. Ann actually gave me a smile, a ghost of a laugh coming from her throat.
"You don't gotta treat this like an interview, baby." Swiping her tongue over her bottom lip."If Tika trusts you, then I have to trust her word." She gave Tika a slick smirk, Tika keeping her face neutral and her stance calm.
"I'm gonna try you out on a test run and if you do well- we'll continue to talk."
"I don't think you'll be a disappointment."
"Thank you so much for giving me a chance." I gushed, a bit of relief flushing out of me.
"Don't mention it." Ann looked at me longer- suddenly she took ahold of my chin making my heart speed up tenfold. Bringing my face closer to her's, She examined each of my features, her eyebrows scrunching together in deep thought.
"You are so pretty."She mumbled, her eyelids lowered.
"Thank you."
"I'll get out your space since I'm making you uncomfortable." Ann laughed good-naturedly but that didn't make the tension I felt leave my system.
"You aren't."
"Your body language says different." Her hand dropped to her side, and it felt as if our eyes finally broke away from one another. Ann started to talk to another girl as Tika threw her arm over my shoulder giving me a hopeful smile.
Within the crew, there was a huge sense of loyalty. Looking at everyone, I knew I wanted to belong here. I knew if I joined them that I would never be hungry or alone. I knew I would belong to an actual family.
Glancing at Ann, the one person I had to impress- a new feeling sprung up inside of me. Determination. I had to ace my test run, and prove myself and consequently not embarrass Tika.

CONSIDER THIS AN ASK ABOUT UR OCs YOU'VE PIQUED MY INTEREST
OKAY SO I’M GONNA LAY OUT THE MODERN MAGIC ONES? And if people wanna help me figure out more things, because I haven’t gotten a real chance to do much with them, by ALL means, send me asks
BackgroundCorey is a weird little town that sits on the intersection between Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. Standard small-town America life- little coffee shops and niche boutiques and one bar that does really, really well on the weekends. Other than it’s tri-state location, the most interesting thing most people know about the town is that it’s home to the Kennedy Conservatory, a college that’s a little… odd.
Maybe it’s the fact that no one remembers who founded it. Maybe it’s that the campus is basically forest with some buildings in between. Maybe it’s the fact that a solid third of the student body doesn’t talk to anyone outside their college. Maybe it’s that the head of the History Department claims to be best friends with the Jersey Devil. Who knows?
(Contains: magic, witchcraft, mystery, griffins, dragons, demons, some very large spiders, cryptids, the crippling weight of academia, etc.)
ProfessorsAlexander Morgan - History - Secretive, bookish, a little sassy and a lot of sass, students either love him or hate him. He doesn’t keep regular office hours and is usually m.i.a. if you need him, and he’ll give you a glare and a long-suffering sigh if you catch him. Don’t touch his things, but do ask a lot of questions. Winning his favoritism is the goal of every dedicated history major. He’s also a warlock with an interest in demon physiology and is part of a society that has to keep a lid on the magic of the world. Corey is right near a layline intersection, so it’s the perfect place for him to be.
Basil Finnegan - Literature - Basil is that teacher you can get off topic by mentioning one of about 57 different things he finds interesting, and he’s gone. He’s a lit professor, technically, but he’s subbed for Professor Williams more than once down in the bio department. He prefers to go by his first name instead of “Professor Finnegan,” that’s so formal. He teaches half the classes most professors do because he doubles his time as the librarian. Not just the regular campus library; also the magic library under the regular library. Kinda fancies himself as the “Indiana Jones of books.”
Peregrine Williams - Biology (Ornithology) - Unlike some of his colleagues, Peregrine actually does keep regular office hours. He doesn’t do anything on campus except his 9am class on Fridays, though, because he spends his weekends away in the mountains. He says “birdwatching,” but a couple of people know better. He’s guardian of a clan of griffins in the mountains and has been studying their behavior and society for almost ten years now. He’s soft spoken and a little stuttery but very committed to his birds. Ace as fuck.
Pen Rockafeller - Biology (Comparative Biology/Evolution) - Pen hasn’t had a lot of fleshing out, but he’s Peregrine’s snarky rival in the bio department. His tests aren’t hard, but… tricky. He’s fond of giving partial information and expecting others to fill in the blanks. Kind of Cheshire-esque in his mannerisms. Likes plays on words and dragons. Really gay, likes Peregrine a lot (Peregrine is firmly uninterested, please get back to work).
StudentsLucas Raine - Biology (Ornithology TA; Junior year) - Lucas actually got a character ask right here a long-ass time ago. He’s a big ol’ bird nerd, totally sweet and wonderful and unintimidating. Three years of college and beginning a semester as a TA for Professor Williams has yet to phase him. He’s got a crush on his roommate and doesn’t know what to do about that. Oh, also, he’s one of four people on campus that knows griffins are real and they live in the Adirondacks.
Riley Evans - History (Junior year) - The aggressive counterpart to Lucas, Riley is one of those people who fights first and doesn’t bother asking questions later unless he thinks it’ll be pertinent to writing the account of this vicious smack-down. He’s super competitive and values honesty above everything except friendship and loyalty. He’s been trying to get the history TA position since last year, and he’s super pissed that he hasn’t gotten it yet, but Lucas got his. He would probably kill to protect a friend, and with what his future has in store, he might have to.
Jessica “Jess” Chambers - Biology (freshman) - Jess JUST got here, but she is determined to prove that she belongs. So many times, her interest in biology has been discounted, she’s been told women don’t belong in this kind of field, that it’s going to be way too difficult and she should do something different, but those people can all stuff it, she’s gonna do great. Wait, is that a dragon? What the hell kind of college is this?
Tyler Hackett - Undeclared (freshman) - Tyler has been through three colleges in just as many years. He just sort of. Drifts. And tries to be an asshole and comedian at once. Extremely defeatist attitude. Hasn’t committed to a major because he doesn’t give enough of a shit. He’s taking this whole magic thing in stride, maybe too much in stride. He’s… probably going to wind up with a werewolf bite or demon possession or something and just not care.
Sparrow Epcot - Literature (freshman) - Sparrow is… odd. First off, they don’t seem to understand the concept of classes or schedules. They talk to birds and write poetry instead of taking notes and follow Basil around a lot. They basically live in the library or, when it’s closed, the woods. They try to make friends with basically everyone but half the time, they speak this weird half birdcall babble that doesn’t make sense. “It’s my home tongue,” they say, which is an attempt to say “I’m half fae, but I can’t tell you fae exist because ~reasons~ and ~treaties~ please like me.”
There are others along the way, but these are the main ones (right now). Like, chapter 1 intro people.
