Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.
1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.
2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.
3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.
4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)
5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.
6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.
7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.
8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.
9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.
10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

Some of my favorite words and phrases to describe a character in pain
coiling (up in a ball, in on themselves, against something, etc)
panting (there’s a slew of adjectives you can put after this, my favorites are shakily, weakly, etc)
keeling over (synonyms are words like collapsing, which is equally as good but overused in media)
trembling/shivering (additional adjectives could be violently, uncontrollably, etc)
sobbing (weeping is a synonym but i’ve never liked that word. also love using sob by itself, as a noun, like “he let out a quiet sob”)
whimpering (love hitting the wips with this word when a character is weak, especially when the pain is subsiding. also love using it for nightmares/attacks and things like that)
clinging (to someone or something, maybe even to themselves or their own clothes)
writhing/thrashing (maybe someone’s holding them down, or maybe they’re in bed alone)
crying (not actual tears. cry as in a shrill, sudden shout)
dazed (usually after the pain has subsided, or when adrenaline is still flowing)
wincing (probably overused but i love this word. synonym could be grimacing)
doubling-over (kinda close to keeling over but they don’t actually hit the ground, just kinda fold in on themselves)
heaving (i like to use it for describing the way someone’s breathing, ex. “heaving breaths” but can also be used for the nasty stuff like dry heaving or vomiting)
gasping/sucking/drawing in a breath (or any other words and phrases that mean a sharp intake of breath, that shite is gold)
murmuring/muttering/whispering (or other quiet forms of speaking after enduring intense pain)
hiccuping/spluttering/sniffling (words that generally imply crying without saying crying. the word crying is used so much it kinda loses its appeal, that’s why i like to mix other words like these in)
stuttering (or other general terms that show an impaired ability to speak — when someone’s in intense pain, it gets hard to talk)
staggering/stumbling (there is a difference between pain that makes you not want to stand, and pain that makes it impossible to stand. explore that!)
recoiling/shrinking away (from either the threat or someone trying to help)
pleading/begging (again, to the threat, someone trying to help, or just begging the pain to stop)
Feel free to add your favorites or most used in the comments/reblogs!

SasuHinaMonth 2023
@sasuhinamonth
Today I have days 4 to 10 for you!
Knowing their favorite drink
Sasuke filled the shelves of the grocieries store he worked at. Wine, something he never understood. Why did people think it was sophisticated to get wasted with a drink that would give you the worst heartburn the day after. He just opened another box of wine, when he paused. Slowly, he took one bottle of rosé wine out. It was the same wine Hinata had had on their engagement party. And the same one he sometimes found in their fridge. Sasuke sighed and told his boss to check two bottles out for him. They would look great in their fridge.
Forehead touches
“Sorry Hitomi, maybe next time.” Hinata watched her daughter pout at her father. He was about to go to the office, the Hokage had called for him and so Sasuke coudn't attend Hitomi's training session. To Hinata's surprise, she saw Sasuke tap Hitomi's forehead. “Oi!”, Hitomi protested. “Be good”, Sasuke lectured, turning to leave. “Darling, wait!”, Hinata said and walked between father and daughter. “What was that?”, she whispered, sensing there was more to this gesture. Sasuke's mind wandered. “It's a thing, that runs in the family.” Repeating the gesture on her, he promised to explain it to her later.
If you fall, I will catch you
Pregnancy had been rough for Hinata. Nausea and circulatory problems haunted her. She hated being alone these days but Sasuke also had his job. She spend the majority of the day in bed but now she was thirsty so she shuffled towards the kitchen. She was just preparing tea, when she heard steps behind her. Turning around, she saw Sasuke smile at her. He opened his mouth to say something, but she couldn't hear a thing and the floor qickly came closer. Before hitting the floor, a strong arm wrapped around her. He would always catch her, when she fell.
Tying ties
Sasuke didn't dare to look at his bride, afraid he could never turn his eyes away again. He never noticed how beautiful Hinata actually was. Not that he cared much about looks, but Hinata was simply stunning in her white Kimono. He heard her say “I do”, in the most monotonous voice possible and Sasuke knew his entry was about to come. He also answered with “I do”, when the priest asked him. “You may now kiss the bride.” Sasuke gulped, they hadn't talked about this. So they just shared a quick, chaste kiss on the side of their mouths.
Playing with hair
Hinata loved Sasuke's hair, she loved it from the first time he fingers wrapped around it. She loved how it always stayed in the position she brushed it in. She loved it's color, a dull black, like black stone. She loved, that it represented Sasuke's personality, unruly and stubborn. While her own hair was prettier to most people, she hated how it always went back to it's usual form, no matter how she styled it in the morning. Sasuke turned to look at her drowsily. “Admiring my hair again?”, he groaned and rested his head right into her warm hand.
Cooking together
“God damned it!”, Sasuke cursed and threw the knife of the counter. He gave the cutting board for one-handed a sour look. Usually it was doing a great job for him but the carrot he tried to slice just not cooperated. “You all hate me?” “Everything alright?”, Hinata's soft voice appeared behind him. “Arg, it's just not my day today.” Hinata took the carrot and the knife from the counter and softly pushed Sasuke aside. “Let me chop the veggies. You can do the frying.” Sasuke didn't like being patronized but some days you just had to accept being helped...
Finding beauty in the ugly and broken
“I'm sorry I'm so flawed”, Sasuke whispered into Hinata's shoulder as she held him tight. Again one of his nightmares. He hadn't even been surprised when the nightmares started, after all that he's been through. At first he didn't tell Hinata anything but soon she noticed. She always noticed everything. “It's okay”, she whispered. “It's just natural. It's just who you are.” She paused. “Who we are.” Sometimes she also woke up dripping in sweat. They all had seen too much for their young age. “Are we visiting our brothers today?”, he asked calmly. Hinata nodded, hugging him even tighter.

SasuHina month 2023
Not much of a drawing mood this year, but I'm kind of into a writing mood, so I decided to write little drabbles for each of the prompts. They all play in the Universe of my FanFiction Bloodlines (I promise to continue the actual fic too it's just... life??)
For Today I have the first three Drabbles. Some might be a bit cheaty for the word-count but it's okay imo. Read them under the cut!
@sasuhinamonth
Waiting for you
Sasuke reminded himself to stop watching at the clock. You never knew when exactly someone returned from a mission, yet he always felt the urge to wait for her arrival. His eyes crossed the clock again, already past one. No need to get nervous, he would just read another chapter. Tic – toc – the clock echoed in his ears. Has this book always been this boring? Click – clack – the sound of the front door let him spurt to his feet, the book fell to the floor, unnoticed. Sasuke walked towards the front door where he finally spot her pure, lavender eyes.
Home is where you are
So to say, Hinata fled from her father's house. They had had one of their usual arguments over clan affairs that Hiashi told her not to bother about anymore. He always made it clear, “You don't belong with us anymore.” With tears brimming in her eyes, she hurried through the streets of Konoha, back to her house. When the front door fell to the lock with a noticeable sound, she leaned at the door, trying to sooth her racing heart. A familiar flock of black hair peaked out from the kitchen. Hinata smiled at Sasuke's confused face. “Finally back home!”
A glance that reveals everything
Hanabi held back a grin as she watched her sister and her brother-in-law bicker over a little incident in the kitchen. They were married for over a year now, but already felt like an old couple. “I'll buy a new one”, Sasuke finally huffed. He side-eyed Hinata, who held shards of a vase in her hands. He touched her back, gently, and she looked back at him. “I know it won't be the same but I'll get an equally pretty one.” His eyes were soft, Hanabi had never seen him like this before. Glances like this were reserved for Hinata.

write EVERY DAY. here's how.
where inspiration fails, habit will always have your back. this is why it's important to build writing into your life as a habit, if you ever want to finish a project or improve your skills.
back in 2018, i (nat) was a college student without much going for me. i was feeling creatively stifled and insecure and like i didn't have TIME to write good. and i was right. i didn't have time to write GOOD. but i did have time to write SOMETHING. so that january, i built the habit. i wrote every single day in 2018, and almost every single day since.
because once you establish the habit, it becomes safer to skip a day (or three days) here and there. you will at least THINK about writing every day, even if you go straight from work to social plans to bed, or you're on vacation, or you're too sick to write. and that thinking is part of the habit!
here are the tips i followed to make this happen.
-pick a reasonable goal. starting off, mine was 300 words. now, i don't follow a goal, because the habit is so solid i don't need to. but 300 words is easy and quick. and if you give a pig a pancake, they'll probably have days where they write 500, 1000, even 3k words.
-log your word count. this is interesting to look back on every new year's eve, and it provides accountability. do this however you like; a spreadsheet, a physical notebook, a note in your phone, each day's section in your planner, whatever works for you. i have a channel in my personal discord server where i log mine.
-do NOT edit as you go. just write write write. if you feel like something you wrote needs work, yeah, it probably does-- everything needs to be edited, but that's a problem for later. highlight sentences you can't get right or make note of them to edit LATER. but do not edit as you go!
-write self-indulgent crap. fanfiction, shitty poetry, manifestos, rants, self insert fantasy romance, whatever floats your boat. having a shitty self-indulgent backup story to work on when i didn't feel like writing for the projects i cared about really helped get me in the habit. write for an audience of one!
-journal if you can't write. this may not necessarily build your skill as much as writing regular prose would, but it does help you maintain the habit and it can be useful in lots of other ways.
-think outside the box. write trivia questions. write a list of your favorite childhood toys. write a review of the book you're reading. i'm writing this post, that's going toward my word count for the day. again, this is still writing, and it helps maintain the habit.
-get comfortable writing on your phone. this took me a long time, but making it over this hurdle has saved my habit so many times.
you'll be surprised at the cool shit you end up writing on those days when you swore you weren't inspired enough. and you'll be delighted with how much progress you will make honing your craft!
happy writing! if you have any questions about how to implement any of these tips, our ask box is always open.

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Arrrg this!
You hear a knock at your door. When you open it, you find your archnemesis sprawled out just past the threshold, battered, bruised, and very clearly only hanging onto life by a thread. “Sorry. It’s just … I didn’t know where else to go they mutter as you look down at them.

Shout-out to multilingual writers who are writing in their second (or third and so on) language.
The frustration of speaking it fluently, but still having to google basic words when you're writing.
The absolute joy of finding a word that sounds just perfect and conveys exactly what you mean.
Doubting all your grammar and being afraid to post it or even send it to a beta reader.
The euphoria of someone calling your use of this language, that is not your mother tongue, beautiful.

let's write a story together - write a story opening!
DO
surprise the reader with a 'hook' to draw them in
drop the reader in an action scene
establish the MC's wants and needs
establish the scene
DON'T
begin with "they woke up"
info-dump
immediately use too many unfamiliar terms
overdo scene / character descriptions
comment opening ideas <3

When reading fanfiction do you like seeing characters executed just the same way they are in canon or do you like some OOC-ness? I personally prefer having characters the way they are canonically, even when they have annoying flaws or character traits. IMO it's part of being a writer of showing a character how they are not how they should be. I've been "critizized" a few times for depicting a character how they are in canon with all their flaws. I know that fans don't like that aspect of that character but it's just who they are? I don't mind reading a little OOC-ness, especially in AUs, but at least in earlier chapters of a fanfic I personally try to write the character how they are presented on canon. They can and should grow over the course of the story but with canon we have a staring point for a character from where we can take them. If you want a character to change, show that change in you writing and make it plausible. Not just throw it at your readers saying "this is how character X should be and how I want to portray them!". That's a cheap move, imo...
