I mean, it does say that being a canteen auntie is #26 on my list of life goals and I guess I accomplished that today by cooking at this Theatre Piece called “Recess Time”.
Tumblr media
What a day! I haven’t cooked for more than 10 people since college when I helmed a cooking club and did things like laksa night for 100 people with the Singaporean Students Association. I daresay my cooking skills have improved since then?
But it was awesome that @practicetuckshop provided me (and other aspiring cooks!) with the place to do something I’ve always wanted to do ever since I watched that One Piece episode 14 years ago about Sanji making a meal and winning a competition with leftover ingredients - a kaiseki-style meal with rescued ingredients without having to be casted for MasterChef.
More detailed posts about the dishes coming up after I’ve recovered from the adrenalin crash…

https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/food-drink/article/3167343/how-japan-claimed-ramen-curry-and-tempura-its-own-despite
Brilliantly written article! The first I’ve read that suggests Tempura actually has Chinese influences, but is just Portuguese in name.

So interesting! In Singapore, we Chinese Singaporeans (the ones that are a few generations removed from China) generally eat the rice along with the dishes unless we are at a banquet though, unlike what is said about Chinese here. I wonder where that ‘grammar’ came from.
Though previously I would have considered it as just avoiding faux pases. (Okay, now that is probably ungrammatical in French).

Saw these Gudetama biscuits and had to buy them… they tasted like regular egg biscuits and not “custard flavour” (カスタードあじ) as advertised. Well, it was less than $3. Made a fruit cocktail with the three year old for a last minute Nursery class assignment that we didn’t know about until the day before 😂 She cut all the orange slices by herself, and some of the grapes! And also apportioned it all and gave the biggest cup to Mummy. We basically cut up whatever fruits we had in the fridge, and mixed it with korean citrus jam and apple juice. I was going to use sparkling water instead of juice, but forgot to refrigerate it beforehand. 😅 ++++++ #cookingwithtoddlers #fruitcocktail #homecooking #cookingwithleftovers #toddlerswhocook #parentswhosuckathomework https://www.instagram.com/p/CNSK-cvnNoB/?igshid=re0z6mkqjg6k

Look at the beautiful colours of this Sakura Shrimp Fried Rice! Not from any anime, I’m afraid 🙈 just a random dish when I’m running out of ingredients. Yup, you guessed it, I made Jjappaguri from Parasite! The beef was frozen NZ ribeye, which I cooked to medium before removing it to rest on a plate. It’s not as tender as Korean Beef or Wagyu which I can’t really get in a pandemic, but it was still pretty juicy! ++++++ #jjapaguri #chapaguri #parasite #moviefood #foodfrommovies #beef #ramdon #koreanfood https://www.instagram.com/p/CB7Va2IA0vR/?igshid=4exwqkscvbac

Udon from Uchuu Kyodai (Space Brothers)
Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well in this time of social distancing. I was reminded of that challenge that the astronauts had where they were sealed in a compound for 2 weeks. While I can’t really cook fancy meals nowadays because of my toddler, I decided to make udon Uchuu Kyodai style! It’s a really simple recipe, fun to make for kids, and uses uh- quarantine staples.
Tumblr media
It can also be jazzed up if you have more ingredients though!
Tumblr media
Ingredients (for 1 - just times to scale up!)
- All purpose flour 100g
- Salt Water 100ml (uchuu kyodai says 4% salinity i.e. 4g salt and 96g water, but you can go up to 10%)
- Soy Sauce
- Dashi (optional)
- Garnish like green onions, wasabi (optional)
Method
1. Combine flour and salt water together slowly, kneading until it is one firm ball.
2. Put the ball of dough in a ziploc bag and knead with your feet. (Make sure they’re washed first!) Foot-kneading is traditional. Knead for about 10 mins, flipping occasionally. Here’s my kid stomping on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. After that, leave it to rest for 2-3 hours (according to the anime)
4. Dust your working area with flour, and roll out the ball!
Tumblr media
5. Roll it up and cut it with a sharp knife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Boil it straight away till the noodles float.
For Uchuu Kyodai Version: 6. Cool under running water
7. Mix Soy Sauce and Water(or Dashi) in a 1:4 ratio
8. Garnish, if any
9. Eat it and wonder how to make it in space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Jazzed-up Version:
You can add pretty much anything to the Dashi and make it a hot soup noodle! This is the Little Bottomless Pit’s bowl:

#Repost @viddseestudios with @get_repost So here’s a rare photo of me behind the ninja mask 😂. So another reason why I’ve largely been off the radar (other than the baby and work) is because I’ve been involved in CREATING MY OWN ACTUAL FOOD DRAMA. I’m excited to share it with all of you soon! It’s really an #OCNoriginal this time 🙈#OCNsoulfood ・・・ We’re excited to introduce you to the multi-passionate Priscilla Goh, creator of our upcoming Viddsee Originals series!⠀ ⠀ Priscilla is a director, editor, writer and food lover all-in-one! Her body of work is diverse, spanning from documentaries to reality shows to children programs! You can watch her debut ‘Discovery Channel’s Man vs Birds’ and short film ‘Ah Gong’s Toilet Paper’ on Viddsee. Other projects under her belt: Masterchef: China (S1), The Amazing Race: China Rush (S3) and more. She is also an alumnus of Singapore’s IMDA’s WritersLab 2018.⠀ ⠀ Priscilla runs a fictional food re-creation site (@onionchoppingninjachef). She used to create artworks out of expired food in during her short stint in studio art.⠀ ⠀ Her upcoming series is one heavily inspired by soul food and her life experiences, of being the grandchild of a first-generation hawker selling Kuay Chap. We can’t wait to show it to you soon! #viddsee #viddseeoriginals #viddseefilmmakers #soulfood https://www.instagram.com/p/B5HFvT9gPbN/?igshid=1bojumqd7ebq3

★ Feb. 22, 2019 Tsuruya-yoshinobu, Kyoto: hina-no-sode (lit. sleeve of a Hina doll) ——– A ball of strained-type sweet bean paste ‘koshi-an’ rolled in two ‘uiro’ layers. Looks like a kimono sleeve with cherry blossom designs. —- According to the shop, 'hina-no-sode’ refers to the sleeve of a kimono of (=worn by) 'o-hina-sama (Empress/princess/honored doll)’, one of special dolls – wearing Japanese traditional 'kimono’ – for the Doll Festival 'Hina-matsuri’ (or Girls’ Day) celebrated on March 3 each year.
