Remembering assassinated activist Darren Seals and the roots of Black Lives Matter

In his own words, frontline Ferguson activist Darren Seals recounts how the working class protestors risking their lives and jobs to march against police brutality in 2015 saw their efforts co-opted by Black Lives Matters and others into another arm of the very establishment folks were fighting against.

In recent years, executives from the Black Lives Matters organization have been accused of siphoning funds, and buying lavish homes from the charity's coffers.

This was a thread I compiled on Twitter "to shine a light" on this issue, using Seals' tweets, my assessment when I originally posted his story on Facebook, as well as a journalist's response to a police violence policy allegedly meant to undermine the vocal "defund the police" activism.

The common knowledge was confirmed that the FBI was spying on Darren Seals. He was one of many Ferguson activists to be murdered, crimes all unsolved and unforgiven. Crimes unacceptable, however typical dissenting voices being silenced is throughout US history.

Who will investigate these crimes of people who spoke against police brutality? To which government office will the trail inevitably lead?

By 2020, Mckesson was propped up as some kind of black community leader. His proposed plan to stop police brutality suddenly was being reported by GQ, and, if you'll remember, was shared - almost verbatim - by various celebrities across Facebook and Twitter.

The whole thing was suspicious and reeked of coordination, versus the from-the-streets cries of "defund the police," an unfortunately worded ethos that meant to stop the military proliferation of police departments, and to use those funds toward social programs to prevent crime.

Regardless, the scheme backfired as many aspects of Mckesson's toothless plan had already been implemented in several departments, and failed to prevent police violence.

I was surprised this became my most retweeted thread. I was simply trying to amplify Seals' lost voice. You learn about the infiltration of the Black Panthers, and the FBI's assassination of Fred Hampton, another working class kid driving for social change, but here it was, unfolding in real time.

People still demand answers for the lives taken in Ferguson, and the potential lost. As this Twitter user says, people are demanding "receipts."
