Spring Cleaning, The Savvy Girl's Guide to Social Media
Although I'm still walking around Manhattan in my winter puffer and cashmere scarf, Spring is officially here and I've already got the Spring cleaning bug. Usually I focus on clearing the dust bunnies from my favorite warm weather wedges, but after attending the United Women in Business event at Wix Lounge I realized I need to clear the dust bunnies on my social media profiles as well. If hearing the words "social media" make you want to run in the other direction, don't worry. I've consolidated my top 5 tips from the event to make social media upkeep easy peasy....
Tumblr media
1. Don't oversanitize: We've all heard it a million times, "Don't have pictures of drinking and partying on your Facebook". We get it. At the same time, don't make your entire profile private. Employers want to see you're a real person with hobbies, interests, and passions.
2. Google it: First, Google your name and make sure nothing crazy comes up. Second, set Google Alerts for your name and social media handles so you know when something is posted about you. This way, you can do immediate damage control if necessary.
3. Make a personal website: Don't worry, this is actually kind of easy (trust me ... if I can do it, you can do it). Use sites like About.me or Squarespace which have templates that are simple and easy to use. Buy your name as a domain for less than $15 at Go Daddy.
4. Find your voice: Even if you don't know exactly what you're passionate about, that doesn't mean you can't start to develop your own voice. To figure out what gets you going, best-selling author and coach Jenny Blake recommends that you ask yourself, "What do you stand for? What do you struggle with? Who do you want to serve?"
5. Build your brand: There's a big misconception that you have to be an expert to build a brand. False. Just start curating content and reposting things you like. Eventually you'll start to find a theme and discover your brand. Just start somewhere - it's okay if you feel confused and it's okay for you to make changes as you go.

The Video I Can't Get Enough Of: How to Negotiate Salary
With just a little over a year in the real world under my belt, I've already had to negotiate my salary TWICE. The anticipation leading up to this conversation is all-consuming and super stressful! I spent hours preparing for the big convo and luckily, it worked out in my favor.
Tumblr media
Now, all of my friends are asking me for advice on how to negotiate their salaries and this video summarizes it all perfectly: "How to Negotiate Salary" with Ramit Sethi. Ramit's website, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, is also my new obsession.

The Fashionista's Guide to Networking
There's nothing worse than the word, 'networking'. All I can think of are insincere conversations, stuffy black outfits, and straight up #awkwardness. Ugh, the worst. But, I've discovered that when I walk into the room being myself, networking becomes a lot more real. For me, being myself starts with what I'm wearing. You'd be amazed at the power of a statement necklace - it starts with a compliment and ultimately turns into an enjoyable convo started over a genuine connection (I wrote about this for Levo League here). Last week I went to an Elevate Gen Y event at Benefit Cosmetics and sported a pair of royal blue pants. It worked like a charm. Not only did the compliments on my blue pants ease the tension of networking, but it also helped me stand out in a positive and memorable way. In a sea of boring-black, I exuded confidence and people remembered me when I followed up post-event.
Tumblr media
Whether it's a bold accessory or a bright piece of clothing, wearing something that represents your true self will not only make you feel more comfortable mingling with strangers, but you'll show some serious confidence that sparks relatable and meaningful conversations. So the next time you're getting ready for your next networking event, don't forget to be you ... and let me know how it goes!

One of my goals for 2013 is to meet one of my top 5 role models/influencers/industry idols and make them my mentor! Unsure of how to even begin to achieve this goal, I put the idea on the back burner. After reading this article I know exactly where to begin and feel reinvigorated and reinspired to make this dream a reality. It may sound crazy, but I'm going for it! What are your goals for 2013? Are you dying to meet your role model?

The Ultimate Work Bag
When it comes to a work bag, I'll make the splurge. The right bag potrays sophistication beyond our years, keeps us organized, and can last for a lifetime. After spending the big bucks on Louis', Tory's, and Marc's, I still wasn't satisified. Too big, no zipper, short handle straps. Why couldn't I find the right bag that was both polished and functional? Finally, Dagne Dover has figured it out. DD put it best: "It's tough to fit your life into your handbag. So we made a handbag that fts into your life." Amen.
