TW Physical and psychological abuse

Sanne Wevers has responded to all the accusations that have come out recently. First of all, shame on this reporter for fishing for negative comments while she’s barely holding on.  In case you’ve missed this, former Dutch gymnast Joy Goedkoop has accused Vincent Wevers of physical and psychological abuse. Sanne says she doesn’t recall physical abuse. She refused to specify more about Vincent, saying he will come with his own statement. This she has to repeat several times, because they reporter keeps on pushing these buttons.

Sanne obviously takes this very seriously, she mentions how it breaks her heart that in all accusations the KNGU gymnastics federation has been notified, but has not done anything with it. She encourages gymnasts to speak up, because the sport is too beautiful to be overshadowed by abuse. She considers there to be a big difference between Dutch gymnastics in the early 2000s and now, describing the former to be ‘Spartan’. They’ve been working hard for the past ten years to improve the training climate, and while there’s still room for improvement, it’s not like the early 2000s, which she has also experienced.

To be clear, since I’ve seen people wondering whether she’d defend Vincent Nastia-style, never does she say Joy is lying, just that she has not experienced physical abuse. She refuses to respond as merely ‘daughter of’(as the reporter seems to want), as opposed to one of the gymnasts. 

Other statements I’ve seen on Instagram from former gymnasts also specify that they experienced psychological abuse, not physical abuse. She emphasises that all stories need to be heard and dialogues need to be had so that lessons can be learned and the training environment can be improved. 

Edit: Wyomi Masela has also come out with her experience with Vincent Wevers. She denies any physical abuse, but says there were aspects of his coaching that were psychologically tough, like focus on her weight.

it’s been a while

I haven’t been so active since last September, and I better post whatever gymnastics stuff I have on here. Oh boy, we have to talk about that Boris guy.

He's been a fixture at both Twitter and Facebook (via the Golden Era FB page), idolizing Ukranian gymnastics, saying he's the team choreographer, and has a bunch of videotapes that he had collected and wanted to post on his YouTube channel (You may have heard of 211UKRJump or something like that? Recently this has disappeared from YT - maybe deleted by himself or violated the rules there, I don't know).

However, a lot of people suspected about what he says he was, because there was no evidence of him being the choreographer and was said to attend an NCAA meet the past season (and he was purported to also film footage for Euros around the same time, surely having to travel that fast isn't so feasible). And then there was drama that happened and he even took to the FB group to make people feel sorry for him.

Basically, he's really ridiculous and then that PayPal incident just adds fuel to the fire.

(Also, the gymternet on Twitter can be a nice community, even with its points and events that can be from reaching to downright ridiculous. And still your mileage may vary on views on what makes the best gymternet community - all are valid.)

LMAO Twitter is still 80% of crazy and misinformed gym fans, plus crazy JO dads and mums. Also, every single thing that happens warrants some kind of political correctness speech. Like Tom Foster sitting on a chair talking to the juniors today? people had an issue with it. The audience enjoying the UEG monkey? People had an issue with it too. I left after Zelepukina's brother who is like 40 years old went crazy there.

I have never been inside the gym community in Twitter (I used to look it up a lot before making this Tumblr, around 2014), and even if there are a lot of accounts that actually give a lot of good information (thegymternet, the All Around, for example) while following competitions, I have always felt is too America and Aliya-centred, and the general tone is much… older, mature than here? Like people were more entitled to their opinion as they were adults and here it has always been more carefree? Idk how express it haha. Also I like Tumblr better because you can make longer posts and express more correctly your opinion.
