The Last Stretch!
I am beyond happy we started this blog to go back and read our thoughts throughout the semester. Just reading my last post, week 9, and being in week 12, is mind blowing. It’s crazy to think how much can change in 3 weeks and even more crazy how long 3 weeks seems in vet school.
These past couple weeks have had an exam each week, which is nice because it gives you time to study, but you’re always studying. We took our last regular semester exam this morning so we have a couple weeks to prepare for our finals and our trips home! From the first exam to now, I’m pretty sure my study habits have changed each week per class, but luckily the grades are staying the same!
Due to exams - my fun activities have been limited. Our class hosted our first fundraiser event and it was a success! We cut loose a little for St. Patrick’s Day and it was much needed! I was able to spend the day as a tourist at the Marriott and then celebrate one of my favorite holidays with friends at the strip! That’s it for the fun things off campus - the life of a vet student haha
It’s been challenging for me to find time to be able to be a person outside of classes and studying but the past couple weeks have been spent at the gym and included walks to the beaches around campus. As crazy as this is gonna sound - I’ve also started a handstand challenge. It started as a joke in the middle of long study sessions, but it’s helpful in relaxing and laughing some! I’m hopeful that eventually I’ll be able to do an actual handstand - but right now it’s fun to look ridiculous and laugh off the falls.
It’s very easy to get overwhelmed in vet school - and it’s even easier when you live in a different country. Luckily I’ve been able to stay positive with help along the way but it’s definitely been a different experience here on the island. I hope by my next post to have a car and feel more situated on the island cause that’s been the major struggle so far. Fingers crossed!
Now saving the best for last....WHALES! Right outside of my window! Two humpbacks were spotted last week off of campus! I was incredibly lucky to see them and get a couple pictures! It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen whales in the wild and nothing makes me happier than hearing the blow hole sounds! I really hope to see more before the semester ends. Unfortunately I have to get back to studying so I can’t bore you with whale facts right now - but they will happen eventually!

The Countdown Begins!
I am amazed how long and short this first semester feels. I cannot believe we’re half way done, but it feels so much longer than two months on the island. It’s crazy how much has changed since our first week. We just finished our second round of exams and they went very well! The first couple weeks of school seemed overwhelming and stressful. You’re given a lot of information at once and balancing everything in a new place can be defeating. We are now in week nine and what a difference. I’m doing better on my exams, caught up in classes, and able to balance fun with studying. It’s relaxing to get into a routine and figure out the best study skills that work for you.
So overall classes are going well! We survived our first anatomy practical and it wasn’t as bad as I imagined. It definitely was the scariest part of the semester. We have one more round of exams kind of dispersed throughout March and then finals. Getting ready for the craziness.
Luckily each semester we get a mid semester break which is a Monday off. It sounds simple but wow it was amazing to have. This break I got to participate in a zoo club wet lab and practice my blow dart-ing skills. It was a lot of fun and definitely took a couple tries to get used to! Also relaxed some at my favorite beach bar, Shipwreck. It was bittersweet to spend time with my friends there since it is no longer there due to construction. I finished my weekend off with a ferry trip to Nevis! Wow. I thought St. Kitts was beautiful. St. Kitts is busier and has more to offer activity wise but Nevis is prettier by far. We drove around the island stopping by random beaches and a couple hotels. Nevis also has botanical gardens that are not only beautiful but have a bar and restaurant inside. They make their own drinks and they are almost too pretty to drink. It was a really fun trip and definitely a nice break from school.
Every now and then I try new places to eat on the island. Since my last post, the only new places I’ve tried were mostly on Nevis but finally made it to Salt Plage on St. Kitts. The restaurant was in full service due to it being a themed night but the food we did have was really good! It’s a really cool place to enjoy the ocean and island views.
Not much to post due to majority of the time is dedicated to studying. Less than two months till our first break and my trip back home ❤️

Better Late Than Never!
After we finished our first round of exams, we got to take a break! Accidentally forgot to write a post it was such a nice break.
First round of exams went ok - with room for improvement! Our second round of exams actually start tomorrow. The break allowed me to catch up, relax some, and study a lot for this next round. There is definitely some stress this round, but slowly getting into the flow of vet school is making each round of exams easier.
Overall classes are ok. Some classes switch professors which can be confusing. Nothing too crazy to mention with those. We have our first anatomy practical this week and that means spending hours on end in a formaldehyde smelling room. Loads of fun.
Over the break we took another catamaran trip! This trip went all the way to Nevis and provided food and drinks! It was a great day spent away from school - first and probably only day we didn’t study! I’m sure it’s what people imagine when we tell them we go to school on the island - and it’s an incredibly lucky perk but unfortunately not something we do often.
We’ve also tried a few more places on the island! Finally tried Spratnet! I had my very first lobster - it was definitely interesting. Another night we tried a bar here called Barry’s! Local bar with some pool tables and karaoke! Next, I got to indulge in a sushi bar offered by Carambola. Let’s just say - yummm! One of the most recent places we’ve tried is called Michaels. Wow. We will be going there pretty often I’m sure. They have amazing burgers and gelato. It was a perfect combination. The food on the island has been incredible - haven’t really experienced any bad food here yet.
One of our favorite places here is called Shipwreck. It’s a beach bar on a beautiful beach. Unfortunately after next weekend it’s going to be closed due to a new hotel construction. We’re super bummed and constantly trying to spend as much time there as possible. Next weekend is our mid semester break (which sounds fancy but we just have Monday off) so it’ll be our last hoorah there!
School clubs provide a lot of variety and activities for us throughout our time here as well! I’ve attended some incredible lectures provided by visitors on the island. I was lucky enough to attend lectures about beluga whales and stranding networks. Absolutely amazing to listen to someone in the marine field. This week I’ll be attending lectures about conservation and one vets work with gorillas. Vet school can be really tough but attending these lectures not only remind you why you’re here but excite you about the endless opportunities.
Alrighty. Two weeks of information piled into one. Now fingers crossed that this next week goes well!

What just happened?
I’m writing this a little late due to our exams. We are starting week five as of today. We just finished our first round of exams and what a roller coaster of feelings. Week four started out strong with our micro exam and everyone did well! So that was a relief, but the remainder of the week was a struggle between studying for anatomy, sleeping, and trying to be a human. Anatomy was rough and scores are not back yet. Praying for a miracle.
So needless to say this week did not have a lot going on - just feeling the wrath of vet school.
Not many events on campus this week either. I finally got outside for some fresh air this weekend. Went on a major hike with some friends and when I say major - this hike is a 8/10 on the difficulty level. I struggled, but the view from the top was incredible. It was a huge relief to get out of the study rooms and spend some time exploring the island.
Every Sunday I get a good break as well with the dive team. This weekend we snorkeled at Whitehouse beach. It is amazing to see the wildlife in the water - the fishes, rays, sea stars, and of course the turtles! I almost had my first turtle this weekend - about an inch off of grabbing it! Can’t wait to try again next weekend.
Overall - I haven’t failed yet. Getting involved has helped a lot with my sanity. School is very stressful and I’m homesick, but hopefully the break between exams will help me relax and destress!

Three Weeks, Two Freak Outs, One Exam
Let’s start with the good news I got at the beginning of the week: I made the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Network Diving team! The dive team goes out every Sunday, attempts to catch sea turtles, and records data such as blood drawls, measurements, weight, and verifying tags. I’m very excited to gain experience with sea turtle research and to also get in shape!
The next exciting news of the week - we signed a lease for next semester! We went to see the house at the beginning of the week and we all fell in love. It is a four bedroom dome home with a large background! The current residents are seventh semesters and have lived there the past 2 years. They had a lot of great advice - especially how to handle the scary millipedes here! They also reassured us that they aren’t an often occurrence! Frigate Bay is on the other side of the island and it has the HUGE Marriott hotel, restaurants, beaches, and the strip of bars! We’re very excited to have found a place and it be in such a nice area on the island :)
Slowly moving the topic back to school - I finalized the clubs I’m going to join this semester: GIVE (Green Initiative), AASV (Swine), WAVMA (Marine Animals), ZEW (Zoo), and the Josh Project. I mentioned the Josh Project last week! Unfortunately we did not get to go this week due to my required dog walking. I’ll talk more about the clubs as I get experience in them! I’m excited of the opportunities each offer as well as taking a break from studying here and there to do something fun!
Alright - now why we’re actually here - school. Classes are going alright. The amount of information is piling up and staying on top of things involves never sleeping. Our first exam was in physiology and our teacher really helped us prepare with a review session. We have not heard back about our grades yet - so fingers crossed! That exam was on Friday, and now we’re preparing for our micro anatomy exam on Monday. Ross definitely did not want us to have fun this weekend (but we did celebrate after our first exam with some tequila)! Even with the exciting news - this week was not easy. Definitely been ready for a mental breakdown here and there. I’m a huge stressor so I’ve been having to find ways to take a step back and try to relax. I cannot stress enough how great it is to have the friends I have here - they are truly amazing. The girls I will be living with are keeping me sane and helping me not breakdown, or we occasionally breakdown together. So far dance parties and Grey’s Anatomy cuddle sessions have been a must in vet school!!
That’s it for this week. Next week we have exams on Monday and Friday so hopefully we’ll have good news to report next week!!
