Sometimes when my Dashboard shows a high number of unread posts (not just “99+” but definitely then), I like to play a little game and guess what subject my mutuals are hyperfixated on that day.
I did not guess correctly today.

I had two different reactions to this:
If there had been a plant that stopped polio, people wouldn’t have died from it for millennia.
It is one of nature’s great failures that it did not produce a plant that stopped polio.
I’m both pro herbal medicine and pro vaccination because you can treat burns with aloe vera juice and sore throats with lavender infused honey but you can’t rid a country of polio with plants.

Found them!

Only about a 2" thick stack of paper; perhaps the stack was thicker before being rubber-banded together for decades, or perhaps it’s my bad spatial estimation benchmarking, or maybe it’s just the vagaries of decades in my memory 😏 (I wanted to count them, but I don’t have that much free time to spare 😂)
I will say again, though: it was such a cool project.

50 WORDS TO USE INSTEAD OF “SAID”
[…]
Vary your language with synonyms to use instead of "said"
in the previous list reminded me that one year in middle school, we did an exercise as a class where we all wrote down as many synonyms/alternatives to “said” as we could think of. Then we combined everyone’s lists and wrote out the words on 4x6 notecards and stuck the cards to the wall of the classroom—probably a section 4' wide and maybe 6' high.
As we discovered new words throughout the year, we’d add them to the wall (the cards were alphabetized, so the first couple of times we added a group and rearranged; after that, though, new “Saids” remained at the end permanently, as “Afterthoughts”— don’t ask me how I still remember what we called them! 😂). By the end of the year, the collection of “The Saids” was pretty well near the entire height of the wall—so very cool.
At the end of the school year, I ended up with the cards, roughly a 4" thick bundle I think. (I wonder if I still have them somewhere? 🤔)

[Image ID: A screenshot from the “second wish” segment of Legacies 1x10. Hope and Josie are seen from behind, close together as they are about to exit Mystic Falls High School. Hope is wearing a Black Widow-esque uniform with black high-heeled boots. Josie is wearing a short, sparkly dress mostly obscured by her wrap, and high heels so that she is still taller than Hope. /end ID]

Fanfic writers, I am begging you- even with dialogue that is clearly attributed, start a new paragraph with each new speaker. The reader shouldn't have to wait until after the dialogue is spoken to understand who is saying it.
Even if it's one word?
Yes.
But it makes things so long!
Great! Your stories will be the king of scrolling, a feast of thumbs, and a gentle stroke across a phone screen.
This convention exists for a reason! Each new paragraph should be a new idea or a new speaker. It's a shortcut for our brains to know that we have jumped across a gap and into the unknown, and you as the writer are about to explain to me where we have jumped to, but at least I know we are somewhere different.
Please practice this! I see so many good fanfic I want to read but except for this huge, glaring issue and it becomes impossible to understand what is happening.

When we say “language has power” and “names/what we call things are important,” this is the sort of thing we (the global we) are taking about.
This nomenclature, this language, used above completely reframes the discussion—and doesn’t give exclusionary, anti-humanity, anti-trans language/rhetoric the veneer of normalcy and acceptability by tip-toeing around hateful words and actions. Arguing against a human’s right to exist isn’t “a valid position in a civilized debate,” it’s beyond the limits of what human civilization tolerates, and it shouldn’t be allowed to be “normalized.”
I just think it would be funny to switch things up and lead with "popular far-right online blogger, Joan Rowling" once in awhile.
