Oh my gosh! I love them both. Ava has a slightly more direct tie to the main plot at the moment as she is the widow of Sybil Halloway, so I’d love to see her of course. However, Farrah is a super exciting character because she is a newcomer and a total wild card! She could really shake things up and mess with the balance of things. We’ve also never had a Farrah, so I might lean more towards her.

In the end, it’s up to you! Who do you connect with the most? If you can’t decide, apply for them both and send them in! I’ll read them and help with making a decision!

Desired Character: Jefferson Oquassa Gender & Pronoun: Male. He/Him. Sexual Orientation: I think it would be interesting to have him not have really ever dated anyone since he is “too old for that shit” but he is attracted to men. Similar to Willam Dafoe in Boondock Saints where he is gay but he is “not a fairy” or whatever. I just find it amusing. Obviously I would never use any of the negative terminology though, like the FG word. Do you want any additional connections for your desired character that you’d like us to add to their bio?: I really like the character bios of James Armstrong and Daniel Bautisa [actually my original wanted character before giving it a lot more thought]. But I couldn’t really think of much of a connection between them.

• When something knocks you down, you get back up. These are the words that were engraved into Jefferson’s head since the day he could speak. His first word was ‘Fire’, something that concerned his father for various reasons, but what the parents didn’t realize was that it was the perfect word to describe his drive, attitude, and personality later in life.

• Speaking of Fire, he knew that Olivia would be like him and unlike him in so many ways the moment he laid eyes on her. He had an attitude issue, sure. But she was strangely calm. The water to his fire in many ways. When he would get angry and start trying to break things, she would tell him “If the ocean can calm itself, so can you.” It was her own version of the phrase he was taught for so many years. Now, when he is out on a mission for the VFD, whether fighting fires figuratively or literally, this is a mantra he sorts of repeats to not blow the mission by blowing his lid.

• Jefferson is an old and seasoned member of VFD, some would say. So, it only made sense that he would begin helping train some of the newer volunteers. Not to the extent of showing baby pictures of course, but just someone to help guide them along with words of wisdom and teaching codes. It is a somewhat selfish endeavor. He has put the past few years into researching the cause and effects of the Schism since anyone knows it is not just one thing that sent the snowball rolling. So, he wants someone ‘worthy’ enough to replace him so that he can dedicate more time to that as well as running Kakao. He loves the organization but wishes to sit on the sidelines for his last remaining years. Jefferson rather die by a fireside with a cup of bitter tea instead of in an actual fire.

• I am trying to come up with a clever headcanon for the exchange between Jefferson and Maura regarding Alex Hansen, and I have a few ideas but none of them are fleshing out very well, so I wanted to see your thoughts on this. But also, it can be super elusive and add some mystery.

HEADCANONS AND POTENTIAL PLANS

Violet carries a large shoulder bag that tends to become full of seemingly random items. She carries this bag because she needs to be able to free up the use of her hands at a moment’s notice to be able to sign. She can go weeks without emptying the contents of the bag and organizing everything again, which means she can be found carrying anything from archivist’s gloves to screwdrivers to strawberry candies. The only thing she’s always sure she’s got with her (other than her commonplace book) is a notepad and a pen, because while Violet knows multiple sign languages, the rest of the world has some catching up to do on that front. It’s often more effective to write down what she wants to say, rather than engage in an impromptu game of charades.

Although Violet is on the fire-fighting side of the Schism, she would be interested in talking to a fire-starter, provided they both would survive the encounter. Her interest in the historical causes of the Schism also extends to an interest in the current justifications that fire-starters use for their actions. That being said, because of what happened to her good friend, Olivia Oquassa, she personally feels very strongly that the fire-starting side of the V.F.D. must be stopped to prevent further harm to civilians. She also feels a slight resentment towards the fire-starters for maligning the name of a historically admired organization like the V.F.D.

The above bullet point would potentially make for some good drama between Violet and Sage, especially once Violet realizes that she already has had many conversations with a fire-starter.

Violet still enjoys escaping to libraries. Whenever she feels stumped by her most recent mission, she can be found holed up deep in the public library, scribbling away in a notebook or reading just to escape her thoughts for a few minutes. She often comes across old books that clearly haven’t been read in a while, and she enjoys reading them to feel connected to past library patrons.

I also think it could be interesting if Isaac Mills and Violet interact, because she may be uniquely qualified to escape any potential hypnosis. Because of her deafness, he may not be able to hypnotize her (unless he knows any sign language). Maybe once Violet realizes that Isaac has been watching her as she watches him, she’ll approach him under the pretense of requesting an eye exam, and he’ll have to choose whether or not to confront her.

Violet often “powders her nose” or “checks her makeup” during missions so that she can use a handheld mirror to check her surroundings and spot any potential tails.

Violet is willing to discuss history with people at the drop of a hat. Since it’s her favorite subject, she has many strong opinions about it. Her friends joke that it’s the one topic where it seems almost impossible to change Violet’s mind.

I want Hanna to work on her relationship with her biological mother, them bonding leads Hanna to discover that part of the reason Hanna’s mother gave her up has to do with who her biological father was and how he treated her biological mother. She is going to set out to seek revenge for her biological mother.This scheme proves more difficult to complete than she thought, so she has to reach out for help along the way. I see this as an opportunity for her to take advantage of her neutral stance and maybe build connections with some of the other neutral characters or push her to interact with affiliated members of VFD.

I see Hanna as a philosophy major involved in some super theory heavy work around questions of power, justice, and inequality. I can picture her leading a little book club/decolonized teaching circle out of her apartment. This would be a great opportunity for her to connect with others.

I think this character has so much potential in terms of growth, I feel that she is coming into a very special understanding of the world in light of her developing feelings regarding VFD and I want to work with her to develop a more nuanced understanding of her role in the world and her own approach to tackling the system from her neutral stance.

Skills: She’s a methodical researcher and has a lot of experience working in archives. She has a great knowledge of history and philosophy from a very decolonized perspective. She paints in her free time and does a lot of street art. She prides herself on being self-sufficient and has taught herself a lot about outdoor survival, especially regarding edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants.

HEADCANONS AND POTENTIAL PLANS

Arnav Waters has always been fully devoted (a word which in this context means “given over to the display study or discussion of”) to his music. However, since the very mysterious and fairly devastating death of his (now former) teacher, he has been finding inspiration harder to grasp, like water through a sieve. Despite the assurances of his (unfortunately inadequate) new music teacher, he knows his music lacks the depth he is used to.

The phrase “tidy room, tidy mind”, absolutely, unequivocally does not apply to Arnav. Should, for some unholy reason, his room be any degree tidier than “shambolic”, he finds it quite difficult to do much of anything.

Arnav has a wonderful relationship with his parents, yet, he occasionally feels there are things he is unable to share with them. Sometimes these things are minor, such as when his mother has burnt the risotto, some are more major — such as when his thoughts drift to the darker end. that isn’t to say he hides it all, he finds that during similar predicaments, he can only stay silent for so long before he gives in.

He has few friends, mainly due to his unintentional sanctimonious attitude. He has tried to get it in check, but he finds that, more often than not — he is the one in the right. The few friends he does have, he is fiercely loyal to and puts a great deal of trust in. He does not lament his lack of fraternisation, but he does occasionally find himself bemoaning his apparent inability to click with others immediately.

Despite Arnav’s incapacity to tolerate small talk, when a subject he is intrigued in is mentioned, he finds his communication skills flourish to an incredible degree, partly due to his dedication to his pursuits.

Arnav would consider himself a Houdini of sorts, he is sure that others would too, were they aware of the excellent essence of his escapes. An example of his escapades would be, during one of the dreadfully dull dinner dates his parents were holding on behalf of the Volunteer Fire Department, he disguised himself as a moving lamp; it went wonderfully, with only a few comments of “hm, that is very clearly a young man with a lamp shade on his head and not a moving lamp” before he managed to recluse himself in his bedroom for the rest of the evening.

HEADCANONS -

Along with her fear about boats and large bodies of water, Adrianna has nightmares about the storm. She rarely sleeps on nights when it storms. While her anxiety about thunderstorms has dwindled over the years and Adrianna is no longer unable afraid of them completely, she still finds it difficult when a storm comes out of nowhere or late at night when she’s tired and forgets that she’s not on the boat anymore.

While she doesn’t remember the exact days her siblings died, Adrianna has a few days around the time they died where she mourns the loss of her family. Each family member gets a specific day. However, she does not mourn the loss of her parents. There was a time when she did, but that was before receiving the telegram. Now Adrianna only mourns for her siblings, doing small things they’d like and facing her fear of the water only to throw flowers in the sea.

Despite occasionally sneaking out of classes, Adrianna is relatively smart. She gets decent grades, though she’s not at the top of her class. She doesn’t have plans on what to do after she graduates and it stresses her out not knowing, but she feels like things will fall in place when the time comes. While she doesn’t entirely want to live off her parent’s money, she knows that she has that when the time comes.

In her spare time, Adrianna paints. It give her a creative outlet when words just seem to escape her. She knows, by no means, that she’s anything more than an amateur artist – it’s just something she does in her spare time – but it give her a way to channel her emotions, thoughts, fears, and everything else swirling around in her mind into cohesiveness. She’s only shown a few people her work because she’s also afraid of what people are going to think about it, since it isn’t always happy, but it’s there for when she needs to look back at it.

PLOTS -

I see Adrianna as someone who is both reckless and impulsive, but also reserved and cautious. I think that has to do with my whole idea that she lives in the middle of everything – and because most people are both, impulsive and cautious to an extent. There are obviously fears that she has, which will be fun to play out. But I’m more interested in playing out the impulsiveness versus the cautiousness that I see her being. I’d like for her to get in over her head with both her friends, provided they both end up taken because it’ll be interesting to see what she has in mind.

Also her parents would be a plot I really want to explore. I think there’s part of her that wants them to survive, but a part of her that just wishes they were dead. Because if they were alive, she’ll be angry. They left her alone for so long. She’s had to deal with the loss of her siblings alone, without them by her side. She’s going to think that it’ll be easier for them to have died, but there’s still a part of her that’s holding on to the hope that maybe they’re still alive – especially with the telegram.

Plan wise, I’d love to dig deeper into Dylans interactions and attempts to avoid/understand more about the VFD over time. Specifically, which of the factions is following zem, if it is just one, as well as eventually finding out about Violets connections with the VFD in general.

Dylan is one of four children, and is the second youngest of their siblings. Despite that, ze were easily one of the most recognizable, growing up. Naturally a loud, and talkative child, Dylan was often recognized simply by the tone of zir voice, and the often interesting clothing choices. Zir siblings have all settled into slightly more… conventional careers, and while they mean well, Dylan is well aware that to most of zir family, ze are the metaphorical black sheep of the family, with an arts degree and career creating costumes keeping zem afloat instead of a job at a bank or law firm like zir siblings

Growing up in a house full@of children, Dylan didn’t truly experience anything resembling silence until well into zir teen years, and even now, almost a decade later, being surrounded by quiet still unsettles zem. Those around zem often joke that the only time Dylan isn’t surrounded by noise is when sleep has claimed zem- though, in truth, even then the redhead tends to leave a radio on, even if it’s just for white noise while ze sleeps. While working on costumes or personal projects, it’s not uncommon to find zem sequestered amongst zir supplies, buried in mountains of fabric and ribbon, the only clue to zir location being a radio placed next to zem and turned as loud as ze can stand, often accompanied by muttering to zemself or faintly singing along. In that way, living with Violet is a fantastic situation- ze can keep the quiet at bay as long as ze like, without having to worry about the risk of disturbing zir roommate late at night- though the neighbors are a different story.

Though film costumes currently make up the bulk of zir income- much larger budgets than theater, after all, Dylan prefers the clothing ze creates for the stage and zir tailoring clients- clothing that will be seen in person, moving along with someone instead of shown on a screen
