i’ve mentioned feral alphas and omegas in a few posts before, but what does that mean? this post will discuss ferality,* its causes, common feral behaviors, and treatment.

*note: i will be using ‘ferality’ as opposed to the technically proper ‘ferity’ because the latter is based on the latin root and sounds pretentious, and the former is based on the english word and is more accessible

what is ferality?

ferality is a medical emergency caused most commonly by social isolation. it causes those afflicted to behave erratically, and is the most common cause of forced bites. it is one of the top ten causes of death for those over 80 years old. it is also called ‘loneliness disease’ or ‘bite fever,’ and is often euphemistically described as ‘losing oneself.’ in the past, more than a week of ferality was incurable. today, synthetic hormones and careful medically supervised management leads to over 90% of those afflicted to make a full recovery if treated before one week, and over 80% to regain most normal function if treated before two weeks. outcomes become less positive the longer someone experiences ferality, but there have only been 1,762 documented deaths directly from ferality in the US since 1980.

why does it happen?

humans in the omegaverse are pack animals not only because their ancestors saw practical advantages to living, hunting, and raising pups in groups, but because they were biologically dependent on one another. in simplest terms, interacting with pack aids the body in maintaining its optimal balance between the twelve dynamic (i.e., alpha, beta, and omega) hormones. prolonged lack of social support means that these hormones become unbalanced, leading the body to a state of multi-system disregulation.

ferality greatly reduces people’s access to the areas of the brain responsible for decision making, planning, empathy, and abstraction. it is the body’s desperate bid to regulate itself by any means necessary. those afflicted become impulsive, aggressive, and violent in some cases, so it is essential both for the afflicted person and those nearby that if you spot a feral person, you call emergency services immediately.

how do you spot it?

feral humans are fairly easy to spot based on their unusual, erratic, impulsive behavior. they may sniff the air (or other people) unsubtly, grab or touch things (or people) and fail to respond to spoken language. ferality is most commonly associated with inappropriate scent marking and biting for good reason: a feral person’s primary drive is to share scent with someone to help bring themselves back into balance. there are also some behaviors that can generally be attributed to the different dynamic sexes:

alphas

feral alphas tend to make aggressive eye contact as a posturing behavior

growling, snarling, and clicking at no one in particular

clenching and unclenching the fists and shifting from foot to foot

violence, especially toward other alphas

an acrid scent, like burning rubber or sulfur

betas

feral betas’ eyes tend to shift rapidly, settling on nothing for very long

humming, clicking, huffing at no one in particular

similar to alphas, they clench and unclench the fists and shift from foot to foot

general restlessness, moving quickly

climbing and perching inappropriately (e.g. on tables, vehicles, or buildings)

a rotting scent, like old meat or milk

omegas

feral omegas tend to make glancing eye contact—they meet someone’s eyes, hold, and look away several times

whining, purring, and clicking at no one in particular

baring the neck indiscriminately in a bid to entice a bite

hiding/burrowing (e.g. under tables or in closets. there have been several cases of feral omegas in clothing stores nesting in the clothing racks)

a chemical scent, like bleach or ammonia

how is it treated?

if you spot someone afflicted by ferality, it is essential to call for an ambulance immediately.

treatment begins in the ambulance. typically, EMS technicians anesthetize the individual for everyone’s safety. once it is safe to do so, the technicians draw blood and begin measuring vital signs and hormone levels to ensure that the individual truly is feral. in the past 30 years, rapid tests have made measuring hormone levels faster than ever. these levels are recorded and passed off to hospital triage, along with a record of any emergency hormones administered.

the hospital then brings the individual to the feral ward, where they have an individual room and nesting material marked with synthetic pheromones of all three dynamics. if the individual has been feral for less than ~three days, typically this is enough to trigger their body to begin regulating itself. in some cases, the individual may need direct scent marking in order to jumpstart regulation. if it’s necessary, a nurse or technician will swab the individual’s face and neck with a cotton swab soaked in a synthetic pheromone solution.

in more moderate to severe cases, the individual may need further assistance regulating themselves. in these cases, the individual will receive intravenous hormones and extremely frequent monitoring.

typically, after a few days of hormone therapy, the individual’s body will have reached a state of equilibrium and will be able to maintain the balance itself again. however, in some severe cases, the individual’s body may be unable to maintain the balance. these people will need hormone therapy every other week indefinitely. in some cases (especially those where there is also malnutrition or other severe condition), the issue will resolve itself with time. in others, the hormone treatment is for life.

how is it prevented?

the best prevention is maintaining healthy pack bonds. if, for some reason, this is inaccessible, clinics, health departments, and hospitals typically have nesting materials marked with synthetic pheromones. in the past five years, some nesting material companies have begun offering materials marked with synthetic pheromones. in addition, matching agencies sometimes offer scent-marked clothing or nesting materials for sale, though this practice is judged fairly harshly.

Hi! I finished reading Yeonwoo's Innocence last night, and I'm so happy I stumbled upon this story. I wasn't expecting it to be so deep and emotional. These characters have become so precious to me! I was wondering, do you know of any other story that has a similar relationship dynamic as Haesol and Yeonwoo? I need something else while I wait for the upcoming chapters! 😩

Well i'll tell you now that NOTHING holds a candle to these two (I'm incredibly bias)

When it comes to role reversal content where the girl is the more dominant one and the guy is more willingly submissive it is always going to be a hit or miss because the creator never takes it seriously and fully dives into what the dynamic will look like, it is just played off as a joke and the roles turn back into heteronormative standards or sadly and what is most common the guy is just a toy for the girl and there are not only heavy power imbalances but also non-consentual intimacy and than some.

So finding a story like Yeonwoo's Innocence that not only goes into psychology of the characters, the story is compelling and interesting while the romance is actually a role reversal is very rare. It's even rare that it is done so well and so much care is taken into it.

Yet again I'm very biased cuz this series is currently my hyper fixation and I am not coming out anytime soon

Now though there is some hope the few works I can think of that is similar to Yeonwoo's Innocence are

Looking up to you (manga) by Kobori Makoto- this series is honestly very cute. it is very similar to Yeonwoo's Innocence the only problem is that it leaves you wanting more.

Nude Model (manga) by Yamaguchi Tsubasa (creator of blue period) - this one is about a delinquent who plays a bet with his friends to see if he can seduce and hwt with the school lomer girl but a twist.

Pheromomania Syndrome by Ichiha- this one is a comedy and it's essentially a lot of teasing. This one is a cute romance about a tall handsome girl and short adorable childhood friend. The premise is basically she's in love with him but can't do anything to him because her thoughts about him are deranged and unholy. (Even though he makes it clear he doesn't mind) It's cute but teases the hell out of you.

This girl is a little wild (Manhwa) -

Honestly amazing. It's a reincarnation manhwa with a twist. not a modern to fantasy reincarnation but one where a holy knight in a intense fight with the demon king, her soul gets switched with a noble woman's. The story is compelling but the romance is even more so. The male lead is the captain of the guard and because both of our leads have experience as soldiers and fighting the rules of society and especially the ones regarding how men and women interact completely goes over their heads. It's just amazing. its similar to Yeonwoo's Innocence in that the two obviously like each other and are close but can't realize it to save their lives.

Those are the few I could think of someone also recommended seasons of blossom to me so maybe check that one out too. I hope you liked some of these recommendations.

First of all thank you for the compliment 😌

I'm utterly obsessed with these two and the whole story so ya, definitely come to me with any and all the questions.

That out of the way lets get into this shall we!!!

The title of this manhwa is a play on words of sorts.

When you start off reading this manhwa you can automatically infer that the main character Yeonwoo is very innocent from the way he interacts with other people and just how naive he is to romantic encounters.

He has a crush on Haesol but it is a very pure thing it's not as though he's after her because she's popular or because of anything that a typical guy would see when they find a girl attractive. (If you translate the Korean title into English the translation you will get is Yeonwoo's pure love. Which I think is also fitting)

His crush on Haesol is very innocent as the title says because of just how childlike it is in some ways. It's just so pure in a way that is indescribable and you will only understand it if you read the webtoon yourself.

He likes her for her and wants to know her more, wants to be closer to her and be a source of comfort. He simply wants to be there for her and although this could be platonic in this case it's not. His relationship with others around him shows what that would look like for him in a platonic sense and it's clear that is not how things are with Haesol. There is that undertone of romantic attraction that you just can't brush off

There is that aspect and then there is also just his overall character Yeonwoo is very much so the typical shoujo female protagonist in that he's adorable but that trope in itself is a subversion of sorts just as @guesst stated above.

The title in and of itself is not only an allusion to Yeonwoo's backstory but it is also an overall mask that the story hides behind. You go into this manhwa thinking that it is a cute love story between a shy boy and a handsomely cool girl. It may start off that way but it definitely is not headed that direction as you continue to read.

The main couple is amazing but there's so much more complexity hidden underneath the surface about the both of them and their relationship that the title misleads you on.

It's honestly a brilliant play on words and now that I think about it, it is very deep.

As you read along with the story the title itself changes its meaning, and as you go on it has an entirely different connotation to what you started thinking the story was about.

And that is absolutely genius.

who’s yeonwoo and why are they innocent

yeonwoo is the main character of yeonwoos innocence lol part of his whole character arc is the revelation that he isnt so innocent (though its mostly not his fault heh)

actually i think its a really good manhwa in a lot of ways like first the characters are amazing. all of them have their own backstory and their own issues that come to light when x y or z incident happens at their high school. the main ship is a typical shoujo but genderbent -- yeonwoo is a lot like the typical main girl in a shoujo behaviourally and lookswise (which also.. gets explored in depth in a way i did NOT anticipate)(by that i mean he has a pretty horrible backstory surrounding it) and the .. his love interest .. i forgot her name it starts with a k . shes very like.. sporty, strong ,tall, stoic. so .. yanno, genderbending i suppose . its the thing that made me read it in the first place cus im a sucker for that kind of subversion ajfjf

so yea the ship itself is super cute and in general so r the friendships n shenanigans that pop up, but the author also decides to start dropping in hints of a supremely terrible backstory for yeonwoo and his friend and it builds BEAUTIFULLY!!!

and its also written amazingly like as someone who usually reads rofan manhwa this is absolutely not the tell dont show infodumping they like to do its really fun and its easy to invest yourseld in it. so yea u should read yeonwoos innocence and also im gonna ask @yeonwoos-innocence if theyve got anything to add cus theyre more insane about it than i am lol
