Surviving Redundancy as a Millennial
Are you a millennial who has been made redundant as a result of the global pandemic?
Are you in total despair and wondering what the future holds for you?
Have you lost sight of options available to pursue your dream career?
If so, all hope is certainly not lost! This blog post is for you!
7 simple things you can do to stay focussed, remain positive and land your dream job in this season.
1. Take it as an opportunity to reflect on your past experience: It’s so easy to get stuck in the day to day deliverables of your job so much so that you hardly stop to think on how well you think you’re doing and whether you’re meeting your own expectations (and no, not in terms of annual performance appraisals) but your personal targets in your efforts to pursue your career goals. Are you comfortable in your current position? Is there anything you’d like to do to stretch yourself further? What would you like to change about your behaviours at work?
2. Take it as an opportunity to assess the next steps: So you’ve been made redundant – and this is probably your first if not second or third job in your career. It can be overwhelming and disheartening of course, if you think of it that way. However don’t beat yourself up over it. Take the chance to ponder on what the next steps in your career should look like. Is there a particular area you had wanted to explore in your previous organisation but never got round to it? Well here’s your opportunity!
3. Utilise the ‘free’ time wisely: I cannot underestimate the importance of this one. Think about the many times you’ve been at work on a Monday morning and you’re looking forward to the weekend already. We all have those days – including those in the ‘perfect’ jobs. You now have some ‘free’ time on your hands. What would you do with it? Aside the usual, job search, what else can I do with the time – Some recommendations would be to spend quality time with friends and loved ones (social distance and COVID rules permitting of course), take up a new hobby, attend webinars and so on and so forth
4. Take it as an opportunity to network: I have never encountered a market as competitive as this over the small number of years of being on this earth. I remember attending an interview and being told 150 people had applied for that one role. Wow. My thoughts exactly. Expand your net and utilise the likes of LinkedIn. Do not be afraid to reach out to old colleagues from the past that may possibly be of help. Speak to friends, neighbours, anybody. You’ll never know...  –
5. Take it as an opportunity to unwind: Yep, after 5 years straight of working full time with no distinct break I could really think of, I think this break came at a good time actually. Yes it was not a great feeling having no income coming in but you know what – I at least had a roof over my head and a bed to put my head on. No husband, no kids, free time to unwind? why not?
6. Job search is a job in itself: Yep, full time job. If you slack in the job search process and do not give it your whole, please do not blame it on the saturated job market alone. You have to make a conscious effort, to wake up early everyday, have a plan of action for each day (be it how many jobs you’re looking to apply for in the day), sign up with recruitment agencies; check your emails as often as possible in a day. Keep it going 5 days a week (I recommend leaving out weekend, for a well-deserved break!). The key to this is not stopping until you have a breakthrough and yes the rejections will come sometimes 5 in a day but when all is said and done what else is left? that takes me to the last point....
7. Have faith...in God: Yes, have faith, not in your job experience (if it were so, you probably would still be in your previous role). What do I mean by faith? you may ask - and why in God? Well, I can testify to this not because I had no one to speak to or I felt depressed and needed to attribute my breakthrough to a ‘higher being’. I know it’s sometimes easier said than done, however It is literally as the King James Version of Hebrews 11:1 Says “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” Are you hoping to land another job after being let go? Is the current situation you’re in not evident of this? If so, you are welcome to utilise the weapon of faith...free of charge :)
