King Thirain (Lost Ark) x Reader
Summary:
A simple, innocent question, really. You were just doing a favour for one of the townsfolk, you had no idea how much it would affect your friendship with king Thirain. How it would crack open the geode of admiration you held for each other, and show the glittering insides.
Chapter 3 - The Dawn of a New Day
It had started growing long before it was noticed. Much like a small flower grows from a hidden seed to a colourful flower, basking in the sunlight, strong feelings of affection had sprung roots into his heart and a dark rose-red had coloured his cheeks at the realization.
He had been surprised from the first meeting. A priest and an adventurer suddenly appearing to help the troops, his initial wariness had been beat to the ground much like the assassins that were after his life had been. The surprise had quickly been forgotten however, as more pressing matters appeared at every second. It had been easy to lose himself in work again, forcing all his concentration onto the fight against Scherrit, despite the brief moments of doubt that he could not stop. It was in one of those exact situations, that the adventurer had once again surprised him.
“Are you trying to make me feel better?” He chuckled. The adventurer had nodded their head furiously in return.
To lead his people in battle, it was of outmost importance to be their pillar. A strong, unwavering leader, whose orders’ they could trust. Although he had many friends alongside him, he had not wished to burden them with his troubles – they all had enough to worry about already. Opening up to the adventurer had been a spontaneous action in a vulnerable moment. And yet, he was never given the chance to regret it. The small act of understanding and compassion had only been the first of many. Both father Armen and the adventurer had proven themselves to be important assets in the fight for justice. He felt a strong trust towards both of them, how they both assisted the people around them and were willing to put in the effort to see the work get done. A great weight had been lifted off his shoulders. With the duo on his side, many obstacles that had seen so daunting were overcome with relative ease. With each passing day, the journey to the throne became so much shorter, as land was reclaimed and citizens were freed.
Of course, it wasn’t a painless journey. Despite how strong the adventurer was, and how hard he himself and his men fought, they always lost someone. Sometimes, they were too late to arrive, and civilians were killed, and other times, it was the soldiers. Each death weighed heavily on his mind, but none hit as hard as the old mans – Sir Bernards’ death.
It was then that his doubt gripped him tightly, how could he ever hope to win this, when he lost everyone around him, and Vanguard still did not shine. As the light had faded from Sir Bernards’ eyes, so had all of Thirains’ courage. They needed to continue advancing, but in the dark, damp room of Medrick Monastery, he found himself utterly lost.
The notes of the Song of Valor drifted into nothingness, as the adventurer put down their instrument. That song… It was the old mans’ favourite.
“Thank you. You’re always around to help me out.”
The grief wasn’t gone. It would linger till Thirain had the time to let it out and experience it fully. For now, he knew what he needed to do. And he knew you would stay at his side through it all.
It was soon after that Vanguard finally shone in his hands. The fight with the demon had been something he didn’t expect, and yet it paled in comparison to the fight for Luterra Castle. This was the final fight. If they lost there, he had no doubt that they would be annihilated, and Scherrit would continue to sit on the throne.
Everyone had been tense, and it was understandable. Even the most seasoned warriors recognized the risks, what was at stake if they failed. He had looked to you, and seen the determination in your eyes, as you made your way to one of the battletowers. And then, you were out of sight. It somehow only came as a minor surprise to him, that you had been the one to take out the mages blocking the door with their magic, which had allowed his troops to enter the castle grounds. From there, the two of you had made your way towards the castle, and then separated momentarily, as you stayed behind to fight the guardian.
And then suddenly, the battle was won. And he could finally breathe.
To think that Scherrit had sold his soul for demonic power – and even then, you were able to take him down, while he himself could not even rise from the floor. Truth to be told, Thirain had seen Scherrit as his duty to take care of. He was the true heir to the throne after all, the task of defeating the unworthy ruler fell on his shoulders, and yet. It was impossible for him to feel any negative emotions, as Scherrit’s body fell to the floor, the adventurer standing victorious over the corpse.
Even when your victory was interrupted by the demons making another appearance, you handled them just as well, despite already being wounded from your fight against Scherrit.
After Armen had taken care of his and your wounds, the three of you had made your way outside the castle. The fight was over, but the tragedy was not.
“How can we call this a victory? Every drop of blood spilled here belongs to a Luterran.”
While he had been lost in his thoughts, you had not hesitated in your actions. He soon found you standing before him, holding out a banner out to him, wordlessly imploring him to take it.
His fingers had brushed against yours, as you handed over the banner to him. His eyes had found yours then, and he had felt the words wanting to spill out – how grateful and relieved he was, and how would he ever be able to repay you?
But then you had looked at him, really looked at him, and he felt the sounds dying in his throat. The feeling in your eyes had mirrored his own, relief and gratefulness. It was then that it became an undeniable fact that you had wanted this has much as he had – to see the end of a tyrannical ruler and the suffering that had reigned alongside him. And that you were just as honoured to have fought by his side, as he was to fight by yours.
Sitting on the throne had never been his greatest wish. Power and fame did not motivate him, as it had Scherrit and many other foolish people. If he freely could have chosen his path in life, he would have wanted to be an adventurer. To see the world and all its wonders was a fascinating thought that he rarely had time to indulge himself with. He wondered where you would go from here, when you eventually had to leave. Nights by the campfire had been filled with stories about your journey, and tales from your home country. The prince had been delighted as he listened to your words. How your eyes would light up upon recalling certain events, or the mischievous smile upon your lips, as you told him of the pranks you had pulled as a kid. He had almost felt embarrassed to talk about his own childhood, but you had asked him with such an earnest face, he really didn’t feel like he had a choice. In the end, it had one of the best nights in recent memory, as he let the rest of the world fade away in those precious hours.
In that moment, where his glowed, worn hands were touching yours, a hard-earned moment of peace where he could finally truly appreciate how kind your smile was, a small green bud broke through the dirt beneath your feet.
Grasping the metal pole of the banner in his hands, he turned to face the city of Luterra Castle, his subjects, soldiers and civilians looking to him as he spoke. A ball of grief and relief twisted in his chest, as his eyes flitted over the citizens mourning the loss of their loved ones, clinging to the corpses of the soldiers recently departed as they wailed. No more. He would never let this happen again, the dark skies would eventually clear for the sun to shine. The kingdom would grieve, and so would he, but someday, they would be happy again.
The small bud twisted in the dirt, as the first rays of sunlight broke through.
“Behold, the light you have restored.”
Roots spreading further.
“The dawn of a new day!”
Looking over his shoulder, he finally let himself return the smile you had given him.
Petals unfolding, greedily reaching for the warmth of the sun.

Chapter 2 - Make Sure You Come Home Safe
The clopping of your horse’s hooves against the forest floor was a welcome sound to your ears. Every day, you would go a bit farther, aiding the still recovering farmers and fighting against the few factions of bandits and heretics that still lingered in the aftermath of Scherrit’s tyrannical rule.
The farmers had complained about a rogue group of bandits ransacking their farms in the night-time, so after snooping around the forest for a bit, you finally managed to pinpoint the location of their hideout. As far as you knew, this was a smaller group, so taking them out shouldn’t take too long. Despite being a skilled fighter, taking so much time off to relax meant you were a bit out of practice. That’s why you made sure to take your time, before you left to continue your journey for the next piece of the Ark. That, and you would miss Luterra.
Your thoughts raced in your head, as you came closer to the hideout. Armen would come along with you for the journey, but Thirain was king now. He would have to stay, which meant your contact would be limited to letters or the occasional visit from you. Your lips tightened into a small grimace.
Going from spending every day together to perhaps never seeing him for months – or years at a time? The thought didn’t sit well with you.
In fact, the weird ball of emotions that welled up in you, distracting you from noticing how close you now were to the hideout.
You only snapped out of it as an unexpected pain bloomed on your back.
-
Finally, he could breathe a sigh of relief. There were many more duties to take care of today, but finishing the restoration plans for the ruined farms in the east had been weighing on his mind. Now, it was finally done, and the orders for the work to commence had been handed to a messenger, who had left mere minutes ago. His calloused fingers rubbed at his temple, easing out the tension.
It was never quiet in the main hall of Luterra castle. People were flocking around, busy with their duties for the day. Guards were positioned along the walls and some stood by his side, ready to jump into action should anything happen. Despite the overwhelming workload that came with rebuilding a kingdom, the air in the hall was filled with a feeling of contentness. Times were still hard, but things got better bit-by-bit, and the people were more than willing to put in the necessary work. A smile graced the kings’ face, as he took in the jovial people around him. Turning to face the advisor at his side, he was interrupted by the sound of heavy steps, as anxious voices filled the air. Thirain looked back down at the hall, searching for the source of distress and his eyes fell on someone unexpected.
If you could describe what went wrong with one word, it would simply be “everything”. The bandits had gotten the jump on you due to your distraction, and after that, well… You had managed to beat most of them, but a small group had managed to evade you and escaped into the forest. Due to your injures, you wouldn’t be able to follow them and be sure to beat them, so you retreated to the nearest village. Figuring you could send a message by dove to call for reinforcements, only to be told that all the doves were currently already in flight or out of commission due to a sickness that had spread. It was shortly after that, that a villager had ran into the village, screaming about a HUGE group of bandits, sporting the same emblem as the ones you had just fought. It seemed they had called in their own reinforcements, and they would be coming soon. Wasting no time, you sped off on your horse, towards Luterra Castle. If you couldn’t get a messenger, then you would deliver the message yourself, despite your battered state.
Luckily, the guards near the entrance to the city had taken your message and assured you that troops would be sent out immediately. One of the older guards in particular had been very adamant that you would most certainly NOT be joining the fight in your current state, and had ordered you to visit the royal healer, Borgen, in the castle to get your injures treated this instant. He gave you the impression of a worrying dad, and you had found yourself unable to oppose his orders.
And that was the summary of how you ended up dragging yourself through the hall of Luterra castle with heavy steps. You faintly registered the voices from around you, some asking if you were alright, but they were promptly ignored. The exhaustion had hit you, just as you had gotten off your horse, and you could barely keep focus on your task to find the healer. That’s why you almost jumped a feet into the air, as someone gripped onto your arms, their worried voice reaching your ears, but their words were unintelligible to your tired ears. With the last of your energy, you managed to croak out: ‘’Need the healer. ‘m gonna pass out.”
You didn’t hear a reply, only muffled voices around you, as you sagged against the one holding onto your arms. They all sounded worried, and you’d have felt bad for their panic if your brain weren’t currently shutting down. A strong arm wrapped around your back, another hooked behind your knees, and you suddenly found yourself hoisted into someone’s arms. You no longer fought against the exhaustion, feeling incredible comfortable in the arms of the person, whose face you still had not gotten a proper look at. Your last action before succumbing to the darkness was glancing upwards, seeing Thirain’s face, his eyebrows knit in worry as his mouth moved. But you did not catch what he said, as your eyes closed.
-
“Now, just take it easy for a few days and you should be alright. You’re the Kings Knight, so I expect you to not make the same mistake many rookie soldiers do and go back into action before you’re fully healed.” The healer Borgen gave you an expectant look, which made you shrink back slightly. Surely he must have had many patients disregard his orders for rest, given how ready he seemed for you to argue with him. The tension left his shoulders as you gave him your positive answer, “Good, good. I would hate to be forced to argue with our national hero. Now!” He clapped his hand together loudly, “You have a visitor, who is very eager to see you. If it weren’t for his status, I would have chased him out of here with a broom when he first brought you. Honestly, I need my space to work.” The last part was muttered under his breath, as he stepped out of the room. Possibly to bring in your mysterious visitor, whom you were fairly certain wasn’t so mysterious actually.
You shifted on the stool; it was fairly uncomfortable to be sitting up again, your body sore all over, mixed with stings of pain. Just as you considered moving over to the bed, where you had awoken, you heard the door open again.
“Oh, good! You look much better.” Came Thirain’s voice, as he hastily walked to stand in front of you. You had to tilt your head upwards to look at his face.
“Borgen sure took his time. Of course, I don’t doubt his abilities, but the wait was terrible. How are you feeling?”
You hadn’t paid much attention to it before now, but you supposed you felt a lot less pain than you might have expected. Guess Borgen wasn’t the royal healer for nothing.
“Borgen must have spent that time productively, because I hardly feel any pain. I’m just very sore all over.” You twisted your arms around a bit, showing that you were indeed fine.
The tension seeped out of Thirain’s posture as you spoke, “You don’t know how glad I am to hear that. I… Oh! Your shoulder…”
“Hm? What about it?” You looked down at the side he was looking at, and noticed a spot that went to your back.
“It seems there is a wound Borgen has missed. Please, sit still.”
Dragging a chair with him, the king placed himself behind you. Glancing over your shoulder, your eyes met those of Thirain’s, his hands preoccupied with the gauze to dress your wounds.
“Thanks.” A small smile graced your face.
He let out a quiet laugh, “It’s the very least I can do for you. Even now, after you’ve helped me reclaim the throne, you’re still out there fighting for the good of the people of Luterra.”
He had begun to clean your wound as he talked, gently wiping it with what you believed to be disinfectant. It stung slightly, and he would pull his hand away when you hissed, muttering an apology.
“…It scared me to see you in such a state. Even after our fight with Scherrit you were less wounded than now. What happened?” He inquired.
You hesitated, slightly out of embarrassment, but mostly because Thirain needlessly worrying about you was the last thing you wanted. It had just been a mistake, it’s not as if you were usually that careless.
“…I suppose I let my guard down. I’ve had a lot to think about, about the Ark. They just took me by surprise, but I was able to send them running, and came here to seek assistance.”
That wasn’t the truth, but for some reason you could not bring yourself to tell him about your actual thoughts.
You shifted your body to give Thirain space to wrap the gauze around your shoulder, “I understand your quest is of tremendous importance, but there is a time and place for everything. You simply must not get so distracted when you’re in battle. Things could have gone much worse.” He spoke with a slight edge in his voice. Your ego felt a bit bruised by that, as if you were a child being scolded.
“I’ll be fine! I’m a warrior, you know that. There’ll be more times like this one, but I’ll survive, just like I did today.” Honestly, there was nothing to argue about. You’d be more careful next time, but every battle brought with it the chance of death. These were the conditions both of you had accepted, when you chose to fight for peace.
You could sense the gears turning in his head, even if you couldn’t see his face. His fingers glided over the bandages, making sure they were smooth and tight.
“…I must apologize. I understand that you accept these tasks of your own volition, and I certainly am not in position to chide you, when your help has been so crucial to me. Just…”
The movement behind you grabbed your attention, as Thirain’s forehead came to rest against your shoulder.
It was then you felt something soft and warm pressing gently to your skin, just besides the wrapping. You involuntarily shivered. Did he…?
He let out a soft sigh, before he spoke.
“Next time, make sure you come home safe, okay?”
Home. Where was your home? The quest for the Ark had forced you on a journey that would surely take you across the world, and it could NOT be ignored. It would mean the end of the world. Till the quest was done, and the world was saved, you were effectively a nomad – sort of. What would you even do, when peace had been restored? Regretfully admitting to yourself that you had tried not to think about that at all, worrying that it would hinder your progress for the Ark.
Thirain’s hair tickled your shoulder, his thumbs rubbing comforting circles on your skin. You could feel his steady breathing down your back, and how you had unconsciously synced your own breathing with his. His hand was warm on your bicep, as your own came up to cover it. You hummed in response to his question, before slipping into a peaceful silence, letting yourself lean into his hold.
Fights were exhilarating; riding through the fields of Luterra was thrilling. It invigorated you, made you feel so alive, ready to take on the whole world if it came at you. This moment, the silence only broken by the faint chirps of birdsong heard through the window and the soft breathing of Thirain – how would you describe it? You weren’t sure, but you did think one thing:
When you eventually did find a place to call your home, you wanted it to feel like this.

Chapter 1 - Just a Question
The battle for Luterra castle was finally over. Had been for a few weeks actually, and yet you still could barely find the energy to leave Luterra Castle and continue on your adventure for the Ark. Instead, you spent the days exploring the city and conversing with the townspeople and the soldiers, whom you had fought alongside with on the battlefield. Your evenings were spent at the tavern, drinking and eating delicious food and enjoying the happy atmosphere. You deserved the break after all, you had helped save a kingdom, so you could take a few days to yourself. It was on one of these particular evenings, that you fell into conversation with the barmaid Vivian.
As your laughter from the story Vivian had just told you quieted down, she suddenly grew silent and eyed you with a look you couldn’t place.
‘’Actually, you’re rather close with king Thirain, aren’t you? Oh, don’t give me that look! We all know you fought against Scherrit alongside king Thirain. Of course you must have some kind of bond! I’ve actually got a favour to ask of you.’’ She leaned closer to you, her hands clasped together as if she was discussing a business proposal. You almost felt compelled to mirror her pose, but you just couldn’t help feeling vary from the intense gaze in her eye. The dim lighting from the torches on the wall gave her face an almost sinister glow, as a sly smile appeared on her face.
‘’You see, I have a lot of great ideas that could really benefit this kingdom, so I think I’d be the perfect fit for a queen!’’
“Okay.” You drawled, “But why would I bother to do that? I’m plenty busy with my own things, why would I spend time trying to set you up with Thirain?” You were fishing, and she knew it.
“…What do you want?” She took the bait.
“My mug is awfully empty, and I seem to have left my wallet elsewhere.” You waved the empty mug in front of her face for extra emphasis.
She let out a groan, “Ugh, fine! I’ll get you an extra round, but only if you promise to do this for me!” She grabbed your mug out of your hands, as you laughed at her obvious displeasure.
“You got yourself a deal, Vivian!”
The great hall in Luterra Castle was lit by the sunlight streaming in through the huge windows. It gave the room a warm glow, a feeling of home surrounded you, as you made your way further into the castle. The very first time you had been here, it had been in the heat of battle. Grey walls painted with sinister shadows, a cold air seeping through the solid stonewalls. It had made you feel as if the building could crumble at any second, so heavy was the pressure of it all.
You had faith in Thirain. He had proved himself more than capable on the battlefield, as a fighter and as a fit leader for the people. He was strong, you knew that. And yet, a sting of panic forced it’s way into your body, as he went to find Scherrit. It had been your choice to face off against the Guardian, which had blocked your path up the stairs, and let him progress further. But it was a battle, and one is never guaranteed to win a battle, no matter how strong one is.
…But that didn’t matter now. The war for the castle was won, and you were safe. Scherrit dead by your hands, you had made sure of it.
Shaking your head to clear your thoughts, you finally approached the throne, Thirain standing in front of it. He was currently talking to a knight by his side, before his eyes fell on you, as you approached. A smile grew on his face, as you came to stand in front of him. The knight discreetly made himself scarce.
“You’re here. I take it you’ve spent a few days to rest, as we talked about. How did you like the city? I’m sure the citizens must be happy to talk to the hero who saved Luterra.” Thirain greeted you, obviously pleased to see you again.
“I’d like to think you helped a bit, Thirain.” At this, he laughed.
“Right you are, but I still firmly believe that the war might have been lost, were it not for you and father Armen. It still feels surreal to me that Scherrit would go as far as side with demons… but I’m getting caught up in the past. It’s so good to see you again. Every day since the battle has been so hectic, there’s still so much to take care of. I honestly wish I could take a few weeks off myself. I’d have liked to show you around town, but it seems you’ll have to be the one to show me around instead.”
“It seems that way. But I’ll be happy to do that when you’re finally free.” You just smiled back at him. You had missed him during your last few weeks. It had been hard to adjust, from spending almost every day together in the field, to suddenly having minimal contact for weeks in a row.
As if awoken from a trance, Thirian gave a small cough, breaking eye contact with you. “Was there anything else you needed?” He asked you.
“Actually, if you have the time, I have a question I need to ask you.” You had almost forgotten your deal with Vivian.
‘’Oh? I’ll be sure to answer to the best of my abilities then.’’
‘’What does it take to become queen?’’
It lasted mere seconds, and yet you noticed a multitude of emotions flashing over Thirain’s face, as he opened his mouth and made no sound. His eyes darted around the room, sometimes settling on your face before quickly looking elsewhere, as a slight blush of red began to grow on his cheeks. Why did he look so nervous? Had the question somehow embarrassed him?
‘’Oh, well, I- um, haven’t really had to think about that for a long time. I, uh.’’ He paused to take a quick breath before continuing, ‘’I’ll be honest, I’m unsure of the more formal requirements for the position as a royal consort, but gaining the king’s favour is no doubt the most important, and, well, you…’’ He fumbled, before your conversation was interrupted by a cough from the guard standing besides you, close enough to hear your whole conversation.
‘’Your majesty, if I may. I believe Anessa would have all the answers for the knight’s question.’’
Thirian’s rigid posture seemed to relax just a bit. “Ah, yes of course, you’re right Meehan.’’ He answered, before turning to you, “Anessa would surely be able to teach you more than I would. In fact, I’m sure she would be happy to teach you. You’ll find her just at the room on the right at the end of this hallway.’’ He spoke, giving you a kind smile.
Why were his cheeks still tinted red? Was he getting sick perhaps?
“Great! I’ll go ask her now then. Thank you for the help Meehan. I’ll see you later Thirain.” You shot them both a smile, before heading down the hallway to meet with the mentioned lady.
As your form disappeared around the corner, Meehan noticed how the king would take a sharp breath, opening his mouth, before shutting it tight again. He watched Thirain repeat this process a few times, before words finally managed to leave his lips.
“Meehan, do you… have any idea why the adventurer would ask such a question?”
If Meehan could have gotten away with it, he would have let out his frustration with a sigh, but alas, he was a knight in proximity of his king. Such disrespect would not be acceptable.
‘’My king, I must unfortunately declare myself unable to guess the motivations the King’s Knight had for asking such a question. Might I suggest asking them?”
“Yes, well…”
The sentence faded out into nothing, as Thirian’s eyes were set on the door at the end of the hallway, his attention seemingly drifting elsewhere.
Meehan really wanted to go home.
It was a few hours later that you found yourself back at the tavern, the sun setting outside, people slowly returning to their homes for rest after another fulfilling day.
‘’A convoluted greeting? Really? How snobbish is that? What, no, show it to my anyway! If it’s what it takes to be queen I’ll do it!’’ You were surprised at how quickly Vivian was back on the horse, after you had delivered the info she requested. She stopped to take a small sip from her drink, before getting into your face once again, ‘’I know I can be a good queen, and that my ideas will help the people of Luterra! If you find out anything else on how to become queen, you’ll share with me, right? Promise me!’’
You let out an amused chuckle, before you put your now empty mug down on the table and pushed out the chair to stand. ‘’If it’s really that important to you, then yes, I will. But I’m thinking of doing some quests outside Luterra Castle tomorrow, and I don’t know when I’ll be back, so it might be a while before I find out anything new. Sorry.’’ Your apology wasn’t exactly sincere, but Vivian would just have to live with that. You were the King’s Knight after all, you had much more important things to see to, like getting yourself to bed now, before Vivian bought another round for you, in order to get you to stay.
‘’Hmpf! Fine, but be careful so you can come back and keep your promise! I’m counting on you.’’ She huffed and puffed at your departure.
Turning your head to look over your shoulder at her, you replied with a quick Of course, before hastily making your way up the stairs.
You knew your quest for the Ark would change the course of your life in ways you couldn’t even imagine, but it still felt strange to you, this time of change after Luterra Castle was reclaimed. Thirain had had his fair share of struggles on the battlefield, and even though the battle was mostly over now (there were still a few groups opposing Thirain’s rule, but you’d take care of those soon enough), he still had so much on his plate. To think that he’d have to worry about marriage too someday. In that regard you were happy for the freedom you were granted, despite the entire world literally depending on your efforts. You already did so much for Luterra, and yet, you wished there was more ways for you to help carry the burden that rest on his shoulders.
You knew Thirain wanted to travel the world. A secret desire he had expressed to you many times, wishing he could travel alongside you and see what lay past the kingdom of Luterra. You had made the promise to send him letters regularly and tell him of your travels, whenever you would return to him.
As your eyelids grew heavier, the thought entered your mind that you would miss Thirain, once you had to leave Luterra.
Meanwhile, in the castle, the knight Meehan’s patience was growing thin. It was one thing to listen to his king constantly talking about the benevolent traveller, who had fought for the people of Luterra. How much their contributions meant and how much he would miss them once they left to continue their quest. It was a whole ‘noter thing to watch the king spend the whole day in a daze, barely paying attention to his duties, as he stared longingly into space. Meehan knew damn well what his king was thinking about. WHO he was thinking about.
Honestly, he was too old for this. Young love was an amazing thing to witness, but it was just slightly less amazing when it rendered his king, of all people, an un-concentrated lovesick boy after just a question.

See You 2
Tumblr media
Tenth Doctor x Reader x Eleventh Doctor
Epilogue to this oneshot
Summary: It happened during another crazy adventure, like always. It hadn’t been long since you both had to say goodbye to Donna, and you needed to be distracted from the sadness resting within yourself, so off you were to the next space & time-adventure. The one thing you hadn’t expected though, was for you to meet the future Doctor again - and this time he claims to be your husband. (Takes place during ‘Day of the Doctor’)
It was infuriating, to see the Doctor having to prance around with queen Elizabeth, acting like a couple, while you had to stay in the Tardis and check the readings. You knew that it was to save the world from a Zygon invasion, but still, you couldn’t help the jealousy and doubt arising in you. After all, even though the Doctor and you had gotten closer after the incident on Azitora 5, you still danced around each other, too unsure of how to proceed. You had no way to label your relationship with the Doctor, as you hadn’t had time for a proper conversation about it yet. And you knew why. The Doctor had a hardened shell around him, too hurt by previous experiences to want to open up fully. It had taken you a long time to learn about the time war, and even more time to learn the names of some of his previous travelling companions. At one point, you had wished that you could have been more like Martha, with how she had forced the Doctor to stop hiding his past from her. But alas, you found yourself gasping for air in the deep waves of regret and anger that rolled off the man, every time his past came up. One might think your worries were unfounded, seeing as his future self had told you about his romantic relationship with your future self. However, time can be rewritten, and you really didn’t want it to be. Didn’t want to risk it.  It still hurt when the Doctor did his fake proposal to the queen, even if he sprung back on his feet seconds later and revealed his true intentions for doing so. But you did not have much time to dwell on it, making the decision to disobey the Doctor’s order and take off after the group when the horse had transformed into a Zygon.  You were not close to them, as they had taken off running long before you could even comprehend what you saw on the Tardis’ screen.  When you finally managed to catch up with them, they were standing in a clearing in the forest, and there were two Elizabeths’. That should have been what worried you, but instead, you fixated on the swirl of light in the air.  ‘’...a tear in the fabric of reality. Anything could happen!’’ You heard the Doctor exclaim.  A fez dropped out.  And then, just a bit later, so did a man. A man you recognized very well, even after only meeting him once - or, well, seeing that face once. It only took a few moments, before your Doctor had understood what was happening, both of them taking out their sonic screwdrivers to show the other that they were indeed both the Doctor.  ‘’...Compensating?’’ Your Doctor asked the other,  ‘’For what?’’ ‘’Regeneration, it’s a lottery.’’ You couldn’t help laughing at that, pulling everyone's attention towards yourself.   ‘’Oh, hello love.’’ The future Doctor left your Doctor behind and hastily made his way to you. Before you had time to respond, you let out a small yelp as you found yourself dipped, his lips connecting with yours.  In the background you heard a scandalized Oi, what? but found it hard to focus with the way he moved his lips against yours, holding you up with one hand around your waist and the other underneath your head, his fingers tangled in your hair.  Just as he pulled you back on your feet, you felt someone pull on your hand, away from the one who had just kissed you. ‘’What do you think you’re doing? They’re my partner!’’ You Doctor tugged on your hand, trying to get you closer to him, and further away from the other Doctor, whom he was levelling with an angry glare. ‘’Well, they’re my spouse.’’ The future Doctor tugged at your other hand, though gently, as if to not hurt you during the tugging war between him and his other self, who had now gone still, eyes wide open and his jaw slack. ‘’...Spouse?’’ His voice was small, unsure and if you listened closely, filled with an undertone of disbelief. His grip on your hand has loosened, to the point where it slipped from his grip as you were pulled into the chest of the other Doctor, your hands on his shoulders to stabilize yourself, as he shot the Doctor a victorious smirk. ‘’Yes, spouse. Consider yourself a lucky fella, you’ve got that to look forward to.’’ He then shifted his eyes down to you, a gentle grin on his face, ‘’Hello again.’’  ‘’Partner? Doctor, what do you mean, partner? Who are these people?’’ Came the queens voices, understandably confused at the current events happening in front of them.  The two Doctors glanced at each other, searching for words to explain, before the future Doctor took the word again. ‘’Well, you see, this lovely person,’’ He gestured to you, ‘’Is my spouse. Happily married for a few years now.’’ He then gestured to your Doctor, ‘’However, since I’ve been very busy, they’ve been travelling with this gentleman here for a short while - they’re travelling-partners, right?’’ He glanced at his past self, who was still glaring at his future self’s hand still placed on your waist, before snapping his eyes up again and giving a reluctant, ‘’Right.’’ ‘’Now, your majesties, probably a good time to run.’’ - A lot of things happened after that. You met another version of the Doctor. One, who was younger yet looked older than the Doctor’s you were with. The Doctor - your Doctor - and his future self seemed scared of him, but before you had time to ask, the queens’ soldiers emerged and took you all away.  You then met the Doctor’s future companion, Clara. A lovely woman. Very quick, you noticed soon after meeting her. It had been a bit strange at first, since this woman too knew your future self, and spoke to you with a familiarity that you couldn’t reciprocate, but you soon found yourself chatting away with her, growing more and more accustomed to her. She was by your side at the Doctor’s wedding with queen Elizabeth, distracting you with funny stories of future adventures, so that you could do something besides staring at the man you loved getting married to someone else (even if he had no feelings for her). ‘’This future version of the Doctor, I mean your version of the Doctor, is he always this… affectionate?’’ You whispered to her. The future Doctor had indeed been very clingy with you since the moment you had met him during the incident on Azitora 5. You knew that with every new face came a new personality, but then again, you had only known one face for so long. It almost seemed impossible that the change would be this obvious.  ‘’Oh no, he’s usually much worse.’’ Clara whispered in return, stifling a giggle, ‘’He’s clearly trying to hold back here. I think he realizes that this version of you probably isn’t very used to it yet. Future you is though. Oh, you two can’t go ten minutes without snogging, even when there’s a crisis going on.’’ She rolled her eyes with a grin on her face. ‘’It gets very embarrassing when the Doctor does it in the middle of explaining his plans to the terrified people around him.’’ ‘’He does that?’’ You gasped, embarrassed by just imagining such a situation.  ‘’He does it often.’’ She laughed at your reaction.  The future Doctor joined in on the conversation as well, just before the married couple had to kiss, slinging his arm around your neck and turning both of you away from the sight while recalling a story of a small planet that had the strangest traditions for birthday celebrations.  - It was later, much later, that you met your future self. After stopping the zygons, after storing Gallifrey away, frozen in time, you stood with your future self before you. The Doctors’ were busy talking about the fate of Gallifrey just behind you, standing in front of the picture of their home planet. Your future self had appeared just then, a bit cross at being left out of the action, but mostly concerned about the Doctor and Clara.  Their eyes locked with your own, both of you taking a moment to observe the other, taking in all the differences - big and small.  Their hair was different, you noticed, and you could spot small scars on their exposed skin. No doubt from their adventures with the Doctor. Before you knew it, you were within a feet distance of each other, still silently looking at each other.  ‘’Wow, that’s weird.’’ Your voice intermingled with your future self’s. Both of you let out a little laugh at that. The weirdness of the situation was indescribable.  ‘’Alright, Doctor, if you could keep your attention on saying your goodbyes instead of making goo goo eyes at your spouse.’’ Came Clara’s voice from behind you.  ‘’I am not making goo goo eyes.’’ Came the Doctors’ annoyed voices, spoken at the same time.  - You were back in the Tardis, having said your last goodbyes to the others. The future Doctor had brought your knuckles to his mouth to leave a small peck, before turning back to your future self. The last glimpse you caught of them before the Tardis’ door closed, was future you leaning into the Doctors’ side, who was hugging them with one arm, leaning his head down on theirs and they looked at the picture once more, speaking in hushed voices.  Saying goodbye had been hard. You were so glad to know that the Doctor’s home planet was safe after all, but it hurt to know that he wouldn’t remember it, that he would feel the guilt for so many years before he, perhaps, found Gallifrey again. But this was how it was, the best you could do was to be there for him until then.  ‘’So, where to next? Any particular mood we’re going for? Or…-’’  ‘’Wherever you wanna go.’’ You interrupted him, ‘’I’m sure I’ll enjoy it anyway.’’ He shot you the excited toothy grin that made your heart do backflips, and started his usual ritual of twirling around the Tardis’ console, pushing buttons and pulling levers, before reaching the lever he always pulled last before takeoff.  His hands stilled on the lever.  ‘’(Y/n). You remember how I said we wouldn’t be able to remember any of this? Due to the paradox?’’ He spoke gently, eyes still locked onto the console panel, as if too shy to look at you.  ‘’Hm? Oh, yeah, I do… Is there something else I should be aware of? Some side effect?’’  ‘’No! No, nothing like that. It’s just… I was thinking…’’ He trailed off, before standing upright and walking to stand in front of you.  ‘’Doct…-’’  ‘’I love you.’’  You felt yourself flush immediately, butterflies going crazy in your stomach. With your head spinning, you tried to make yourself say something back to the Doctor, but no sound came out from your gaping mouth as you stared back at him.  ‘’You and I won’t be able to remember that I said that.’’ He continued, ‘’And that’s exactly why I wanted to do it. Because I realized that this whole thing, I’ll experience it again in the future. The zygons, saving Gallifrey… getting married somewhere along the way. And… I wanted to experience this again too.’’ He admitted sheepishly, but not breaking eye contact, as your eyes searched his, confused.  He continued; ‘’I know I love you. That’s not going to change just because we won’t remember this little adventure, and eventually, I’ll get to say it again for the first time. Or maybe, it’ll be you who says it then.’’ He paused for a moment. ‘’I’m… I’m not good at these romantic gestures, but this. This felt right. Like it was something I had to do, after everything that's just happened… Or maybe I just couldn’t help myself.’’ The Doctor finally smiled. Just a small, nervous smile, and it strangled your heart.  You had longed to hear those words for so long, to be sure that your affections were returned, and yet doubt clawed at your mind, unable to accept the reality that was unfolding in front of you.  ‘’But, time can be changed, right? How do we know for sure that it'll work out?’’ You asked him, reaching out to hold his hands in yours, trying to convince yourself that this was indeed reality and not some cruel illusion. His hands held yours gingerly, squeezing gently as he let out a low chuckle.  ‘’Well, you did just spend a good portion of this crisis getting snogged by my future self, so I think we’re safe to assume that it will.’’ You let out a gasp, ‘’It wasn’t nearly that much! And besides, he’s you! It’s your fault for being such a sap in the future.’’ He laughed at that, tugging you behind him as he walked back to the lever, and then brought one of his hands up to cup your chin, the other one landing on the lever.  ‘’You know, there’s one other thing I wanted to do.’’ He titled your head up, and tilted his own down, ‘’...If you don’t mind.’’ You brought your hand over his, leaning in closer with a smile on your face, ‘’I don't think I do. So go ahead, Doctor.’’ As he brought his lips against yours, you heard the telltale sound of the lever being pulled and the Tardis began to hum, as everything faded.   You felt a bit tired. The sort of tired you feel when you’ve just woken up from a long night's sleep - at peace and very unwilling to move. You felt a puff of warm air against your face, prompting you to finally open your eyes slowly, before they jumped wide open when you saw the Doctor’s face just inches from yours. His eyes were closed as well, but began to slowly blink open as you took a step backwards. That’s when you noticed his hands holding yours.  He noticed too, and let go of your hands with a nervous laugh. He scratched his neck as he looked to the floor for a moment, but then focused on the Tardis’ screen.  ‘’Well, looks like we’ve landed somewhere, somewhen. I’ll just… go have a quick look.’’ He muttered, striding towards the door. You didn’t answer, too busy trying to get your giddy nerves under control, your heart beating much too fast for your liking.  ‘’Oh, huh, doesn’t look like the worst place to have landed. Should we go take a look?’’ He offered his hand to you. The light from outside caught in his hair, and you almost tripped over your own feet as you walked closer, those cursed butterflies zooming around in your guts, as you slid your hand into his.   ‘’Of course. Anywhere with you Doctor.’’

See You Now, Saw You Then

Tenth Doctor x Reader x Eleventh Doctor One-Shot
Summary: Time travel is always a bit unpredictable, and you’re never totally sure where you’re gonna end up. Travelling with the Doctor had made you prepare for many scenarios, but never one where his future self would be the one to declare that he adores you, before your own Doctor could.
_______________________________________________________________________
Meeting the Doctor had been lifechanging. And life- saving , considering you’d most likely be dead if he hadn’t showed up when he did. That first wacky adventure had led to so many more, and you wouldn’t change it for the world. The trips amongst the stars was definitely something you couldn’t imagine yourself living without now. And your travelling buddy, oh that man. Or that alien , to be correct. You had found the thought funny at first - a time travelling alien who was somehow enamoured with humans and all their silly little habits. His overwhelming enthusiasm about everything human even made you appreciate your fellow humans a little more.
The Doctor was truly amazing. Everywhere he went, he explored with a sense of wonder and challenged any danger head on - willing to risk his own life multiple times in order to save others. But it was also the small things that made you so fond of him. It was the way he carried himself, confident yet somehow one of the most clumsy people you had ever met. The warm tone of his voice, all his small french phrases, his hugs. It filled you with feelings you shouldn’t have, for many reasons. The Doctor was busy with this life of travelling, he would live much longer than you ever would, and then there was you. No matter how many times the Doctor had exclaimed that you were brilliant, no matter how enthusiastically he claimed it, you couldn’t believe it would ever be enough to rival all of that which he could have instead. You didn’t want to look down on yourself, anybody back on earth would be lucky to have you, but what hope did you have with someone who could have anyone in the entirety of space and time - and already had an incredible amount of wannabe-flirts. It pained you to keep such a tight lid on your feelings, but you dared not do anything else. You would suffocate the urge to kiss him when he babbled on about something you could only hope to ever understand, you’d keep your lovesick thoughts to yourself when he complimented you. There was too much to lose to ever let him know.
‘’Oh, (y/n), this one you’ll love! The Market Festival of Azitora 5! It’s a tradition that every 40th year, merchants from all sorts of different galaxies bring their most precious and interesting goods, and meet at this planet. It’s always very crowded, because everyone wants to see what interesting goods the merchants have brought with them from the corners of the universe, and there’s even a competition, where the merchant with the most special item gets a prize! And of course, you can’t forget…’’ The Doctor rambled on, as he circled the Tardis’ control panel, pushing buttons and pulling levers with little effort. You had tuned out the Doctor’s voice, and stared longingly at his animated form instead. You had to be careful that he didn’t catch you in the act, but you couldn’t help but let yourself indulge in moments like this.
‘’(y/n)?’’
You blinked, before quickly snapping out of your trance and answering the Doctor, who was now looking at you with an almost unsure gaze, his bushy eyebrows knitted in concern, an unknown emotion swimming in his brown eyes, ‘’Huh? Oh, yeah, sorry Doctor, I guess I zoned out a little bit. I’m just a little tired, went to bed late last night.’’ You were rambling, flustered, and you knew it must have been obvious. Luckily, the Doctor seemed content with having your full attention now, beckoning you to his side as he opened the door of the Tardis with his signature ‘’Allons-y!’’, before dragging you out into the market of Azitora 5 with him.
‘’Now, feel more than free to have a look around, but don’t let yourself get talked into buying something strange! And by strange, I mean anything that might threaten your life!’’ He said, as he mingled into the huge crowd, with you struggling to follow behind him.
‘’But Doc, how am I supposed to know? I’ve never seen any of this stuff before!’’ You counterpointed. At that, he stopped and turned around to look at you.
‘’Well… You’re right. I guess we better just stick together then, eh?’’ He asked with a light laugh, his varm fingers enclosing around your hand, squeezing it softly, before pulling you to his side. The butterflies in your stomach would not settle down, even after he shifted his attention to the surrounding stalls that you passed, your hand gripped tightly in his, rubbing his thumb over your skin gently every so often.
The next few hours were spent with the Doctor dragging you to nearly every stall to have a look (Obviously not nearly all of them, but it sure felt like it.) Every so once in a while, the Doctor would grab an item and show it off to you, claiming to have seen it many times before on his travels. The merchants weren’t too happy with this, and you found yourself dragging the Doctor away before they could get too agitated. That’s how you found yourself in an arena of sorts, the seats slowly being filled by the other visitors of the festival.
‘’What is this place? Why are they all sitting down?’’ You inquired.
‘’Oh! You remember that contest I mentioned? Well, this is where it happens. Now, quickly, let’s find a seat before they’re all taken.’’ He tugged you after him, as he sprinted up to the closest available seats. Your side pressed against his, making your skin burn beneath your clothes. It was almost painful. You noticed that his hand had yet to let go of yours, and when you tried to loosen your grip, he intertwined your fingers with his. Heat rushed to your cheeks, and you thanked whatever was out there, that the Doctor was too busy looking around the arena to notice the state of you.
‘’Any moment now, the merchants will go to the middle of the arena, one by one, and show off their item.’’ He let out a chuckle, ‘’This part of the festival is always a riot. One time, one of the merchants had brought a willowplik with her, and the problem was, that willowpliks aren’t very fond of crowds, so it started spewing nasty goo everywhere. That poor merchant wasn’t even aware that it could do that. Oh lord, the smell. It was so bad.’’ You couldn’t help but join in his laughter, the image of people fleeing the area in a panic to avoid some smelly goo was enough to make you forget your lovesick infatuation for just a moment.
Even with the Tardis translating everything the merchants said, you were grateful that the Doctor still took the time to explain the items they had brought in terms that you could understand. At some point, an alien took the stage, with a small cube in their hands. Their four blue fingers gripped it tightly in their hands, before raising it up into the air to show it off. It just looked like a grey metallic cube, but it lit up with blue lines when the alien pressed at a specific point.
The Doctor let out a whistle, ‘’Hard to believe they let one of those on the planet.’’
‘’One of those what? Is it something dangerous they’ve brought?’’ You tensed. Surely they wouldn’t allow anything into the competition that was dangerous. But then again, if it was supposed to be a showing of strange new items, there was a chance that the officials wouldn’t be sure if the item was dangerous or not.
‘’It’s an infinity cube. It’s named that way, because every time it is activated, something new will happen - you know, infinite possibilities. They’re banned on most planets, because of their unpredictability. Aaaand they’re going to activate it here… (y/n)! We have to get down there!’’. With that, he jumped out of his seat, and raced down, shouting ‘’Sorry!’’, whenever he hit someone with his lanky legs.
When you finally reached the ground, he whipped out his trusty sonic screwdriver, and pointed it at the cube, which had begun to rise into the air. The merchant was desperately trying to grab it, seemingly unaware of the item’s power.
The Doctor lowered his screwdriver with a frustrated groan, ‘’Ugh, you always act up like this when I need you the most! (Y/n), don’t get too close to…-’’ He turned around to look at you, and sucked in a quick breath, his eyes widening in terror.
‘’Doctor?’’ You had no idea why he was looking at you like that. You tried to reach out to him, but as you did, you noticed the blue shimmer surrounding your arm, ‘’Doctor? What is happening?’’
‘’(y/n)… Just, stay right there, I’m coming over to you. Don’t move!’’ He pleaded, slowly moving towards you, reaching his hands out to you. The crowd around you was restless, their murmurs and confusion slowly morphing into panic, as they realized that the merchant had no control over their item. You tuned it all out, unable to tear your eyes away from the Doctor’s, which were fixed on your form, as if trying to keep you in your spot.
‘’That’s it, (y/n). Come on, give me your hand. I’ll figure out what is happening and put you back to normal, alright? Just come here.’’ His fingers were so close to touching yours now.
Your voice came out weak, as if it came from another room, ‘’Doctor?’’. The colors of your surroundings were slowly fading, turning into a light blue, the shapes of the aliens in the crowd blurring. You felt queasy, almost weightless. You struggled to move your body.
When the Doctor tried to grab your hand, his fell right through yours, as if you weren’t really there.
‘’(Y/N)!’’ His voice turned to panic, his hands desperately trying to grab you, but you hardly heard it, your mind slowly getting lost in the strange blue fog. Then, it all turned white.
Whatever you were laying on, it felt somehow familiar. Opening your eyes, the first color you noted was the light blue. But this time, it seemed that it was merely the normal color of your surroundings, the blue glow from the infinity cube nowhere to be seen. You felt sore, your arms like jelly as you stood up, gripping tightly onto the railing.
While you were still trying to get your wits about you, you missed the sound of a door opening and footsteps. You let out a low groan, as you rubbed your temple, eyes still fixed on the floor, before you heard a quiet, ‘’(Y/n)?’’. It was an unfamiliar voice, and when your eyes fell on the person before you, you saw an unfamiliar face as well. Green eyes, brown locks combed to the side, and a noticeable chin. However, his eyes looked at you with such familiarity, that you couldn’t help but feel that you must’ve met him somewhere before. Perhaps on one of your adventures with the Doctor? But, surely you would’ve remembered a handsome face like his, you admitted to yourself, feeling a bit ashamed of your attraction to this unknown man.
‘’Who are you? Where am I? I was just at Azikorlaka, and then I woke up here. I didn’t mean to break into your ship, or home or whatever.’’ You felt flustered under his gaze, which was now filled with an emotion you couldn’t place, but if you listened to the small voice in the back of your head it would say disbelief , amazement,   adoration. But you wouldn’t listen.
His eyes crinkled, as the corners of his lips lifted into a small grin, ‘’Azikorlaka? You wouldn’t by any chance mean Azitora 5?’’
‘’...Yes, that is what I meant, but, how would you know that?’’ You questioned him, your words laced with hesitance. Did this man have something do with you being teleported here? He didn’t seem dangerous, but at the same time you had no reason to trust him, no matter how silly and non-threatening he looked, fiddling with his bowtie and hair while looking at his reflection on a screen - wait, why was he doing that?
‘’I remember this. The day you disappeared - Although, only for a little while. But I always did wonder where you went. How ironic that it would be here, at this moment.’’ He sighed almost wistfully, looking at you in that particular way that felt too intimate for someone you swear you hadn’t met before.
‘’What do you mean you remember this? I haven’t met you before.’’
He stood in front of you now, close enough to reach you with his hand, which he gently placed on your cheek. Suddenly you noticed how tired he looked. Despite the quick fix-up he had just done, his clothes were still slightly ragged and askew. His other hand he slowly placed on your other cheek, his breath washing over your face as he leaned down.
‘’Oh, (y/n)...’’
You felt like you should move. That you should create some distance from this… stranger , but you felt frozen, unwilling to part from him. Sadness emanated from him, and it felt familiar. Why did it feel familiar ? He rubbed your cheek with his thumb, eyelids drooping.
‘’Wha…-’’
He kissed you. Without thinking, your hands grabbed onto the lapels of his jacket, your eyes blown wide. His lips moved gently against yours, as his warm hands kept you pressed against his tall form. You could feel the tips of his fingers getting tangled in your hair, dragging down your neck and all the way down to your waist. Somehow, he managed to pull you even closer, your eyes finally closing. The kiss made you weak in the knees, not used to being handled like this. To be kissed like you were the most important person in the world, as his soft lips molded against yours. You wondered if the Doctor would ever kiss you like this.
The Doctor.
Snapping out of your daze, you pushed the man away, his lips leaving yours with a small pop .
‘’What... is happening?’’ You asked, taking greedy gulps of air into your lungs. You had asked that in regards to the kiss, though it seemed your makeout-buddy interpreted it differently.
‘’I sent you away. It was too dangerous for you to be here. but of course this happens. You show up anyway. Oh, you never did listen to orders did you?’’ A fond chuckle passed over his lips, though the sadness in his eyes grew stronger. With his hands still on your waist, he suddenly pulled you in again for a quick peck on the lips.
‘’He…-’’ Another peck. He pulled away slightly, just enough to separate his lips from yours as he pressed his forehead against your own, looking directly into your eyes.
‘’I suppose… This must all be very confusing to you.’’ He let out a nervous laugh, ‘’I apologize. I couldn’t help myself, I miss you too much already and it hasn’t even been that long since I dropped you off.’’
‘’What are you…-’’
‘’Really, the universe might be ending and you’re just standing there, looking so… kissable! ’’ He exclaimed with vigor, as if it annoyed him, moving away from you as he continued, ‘’I might die and never see you again and then you show up just to distract me! You absolute vixen! If I survive this, you better say yes when I ask you to marry me!’’ He threw his hands up in the air, before twirling around the console you hadn’t noticed before, pulling levers and pressing buttons.
‘’When you ask me to marry you?’’ You whispered to yourself, letting out a shaky sigh and rubbing your fingers against your temple, ‘’Why would you… Why would you ask me to marry you, I don’t even know you.’’ You managed to choke out, growing frustrated at the lack of answers. You just wanted to go back to the Doctor. You needed him to know that you were safe, you dare not imagine what he would do if you were lost forever.
The handsome stranger stopped his movement, looking at you again, now as if he had just been hit by a sudden realization. Removing his hands from the console, he slowly made his way over to you again, gently taking your hands in his.
He gave you a soft smile, ‘’(Y/n), look around you.’’
You blinked, confused at his request, before finally taking your eyes off him and letting them roam around the room you were in. It was blue, just as you had noticed when you first woke. But the layout of the room, it seemed so familiar. It was at the tip of your tongue. It was when you looked upwards, towards the ceiling, that's when you saw the final piece of evidence. Gallifreyan. You still didn’t know how to read it, but you recognized the symbols from the small impromptu lessons you had had with the Doctor. Lowering your eyes again, you locked gazes with the man in front of you - The Doctor.
‘’We’re in the Tardis.’’ You gasped.
‘’You really only noticed now? What, too busy looking at your handsome Doctor?’’ He teased you, lifting one eyebrow with a smirk, seeming so damn pleased with himself, as your cheeks grew warm.
‘’I- You- Shut up!’’ You tried to remove your hands from his, your face hot with embarrassment. The Doctor had other plans, pulling you into a hug, burying his face in the crook of your shoulder, his own shaking with a warm laughter.
You let yourself enjoy the hug for a moment. He was the Doctor, and since he recognized you, it had to be one of his future regenerations. Part of you grew worried about the possibility of you messing up the timelines, but another part of you was concerned about something entirely different. He had kissed you - more than once. He wanted to propose to you. Something was wrong, it couldn’t be true.
‘’You’re gonna ask me to marry you.’’ It came out mumbled from your head pressed against his neck.
‘’It seemed like the natural next step, so yes.’’ He hummed, cheek nuzzling further into your neck, swaying you softly in the hug.
‘’...Why?’’
He pulled away to give you a bewildered look, ‘’Why? Well why wouldn’t I? I mean, you’re you , (y/n). And I lo…- Oh, you don’t know that yet, do you? Of course,’’ He let out a frustrated groan, his eyebrows knitting together as he slapped his hand against his temple, ‘’Of course! You were just on Azitora 5. Oh, I’m so stupid. Stupid Doctor! That’s why your behavior changed after that day… It’s all because of this!’’
‘’Doctor, I don’t understand…’’ You lifted your hand to place it on his cheek, only to notice the blue shimmer surrounding it.
‘’...Looks like we’re out of time. It’s time for you to go back to your Doctor, (y/n).’’ He murmured, looking slightly crestfallen.
‘’But wait! I can’t go now! You’ll be all alone!’’ You gripped onto his shoulders, shaking him, ‘’You shouldn’t have to face… whatever is happening alone!’’ Your voice was shaky, on the verge of breaking.
The Doctor’s hands found yours, squeezing them gently, before bringing them to his lips for a small kiss, ‘’(Y/n), there’s someone who is much more scared than I am right now, and that’s someone who thinks that he’s already lost you. He needs you, (y/n), you have to go back to him.’’ He leaned in to kiss your forehead, and smiled at you.
‘’But… You’re gonna be all alone.’’ You mumbled, sadness welling up in your chest at the Doctor facing yet another disaster with no one by his side. Your hands were now phasing through his, a sign that you only had a few seconds left.
‘’No, (y/n), you’re still with me. Even when you aren’t right by my side, I always feel you with me. And even though I know you’ll be extremely cross with me, when I go back to pick you up, I know you’ll stay. I couldn't ask for anything more.’’
The blue shimmer was now clouding your vision, your eyelids felt unbelievably heavy as you blinked, your pleading gaze locked onto the Doctor.
‘’Oh,’’ He breathed, ‘’I almost forgot. (Y/n), I’m sorry to put the responsibility onto your shoulders, but when you get back to your Doctor, please, cut the poor guy some slack and take charge, would you? He may act charming and all that, but… Well, I was never too good at being totally honest about my feelings, was I…?’’
His words slowly faded into nothingness, as a blinding white filled your vision. The last thing you remember was his green eyes.
‘’(Y/N)!’’
Waking up now was harder than it had been before, as if you had just been in a deep sleep and was now being woken up by your parents, reminding you to get up for school.
‘’(Y/n)! (Y/n) please look at me.’’ Whoever was talking was cradling you in their arms, their body trembling just enough to be noticed.
Groaning, you attempted to swat the person away, ‘’Uggh, five more minutes, is that too much to ask for…’’
Wait.
Your eyes snapped open, worried brown eyes meeting yours. Concern was replaced with relief, as a tiny smile slipped onto the Doctor’s face.
‘’Hey.’’ He murmured to you, as if indeed speaking to a person who just woke up.
‘’Hi.’’ You replied back, unable to stop yourself from smiling in return. It was then you noticed your position, your cheek pressed against his clothed chest, one of his arms under your back, while his other hand was supporting your head.
‘’Good to have you back.’’ He said, his smile growing wider on his face, adjusting your position so you could sit up properly in front of him.
You took a look around you. You were still in the arena, but it was completely empty, deserted, except for you and the Doctor.
Sensing your confusion, the Doctor was quick to explain, ‘’All the guests were evacuated off the planet. It took some explaining, but they thankfully listened and are now parked in the planet's orbit, until the threat is gone. The infinity cube may be dangerous, but all times it has ever been used in history, it has only affected the surroundings within a certain range. Now, I’ll put this little fella somewhere safe, and then we can give them the signal that it’s safe to come back.’’ He stood quickly, pulling you up with him and setting off towards where you left the Tardis, ‘’Do you remember what happened after you disappeared? I’m not entirely sure myself, but I’m almost certain that you were teleported somewhere else, but it was impossible to know for sure.’’ He mused the last part to himself, getting lost in thought.
‘’You didn’t know? ...But, how did you get me back then? How could you reverse something you didn’t understand… wait, you said you sent the people away from the planet…’’ Realization slowly dawned on you, a terrible feeling in your gut. You stopped walking, the Doctor stopping a few steps ahead of you. His neck was craned forward, looking down at the ground, as if ashamed.
‘’It was the only option I had at the moment. And I… couldn’t just let you slip away, not when there was a chance I could get you ba- bring you back, I mean!’’ He turned his head slightly to look at you, with the face of a kicked puppy.
‘’You used the cube… You idiot! That could’ve been incredibly dangerous! What would I have done if you get hurt?’’ Marching up to the time lord, he backed up slightly as your face came close to his, ‘’You’re not the only one who gets to be worried, you know.’’ You pulled him down to your level, so you could lean your head on his.
He gaped at you, lost for words, ‘’I, uh, I’m sorry. I was just getting a little desperate, but, hey. Nothing too bad happened. Except for the pixies, those were a bit annoying.’’ He trailed off, his cheeks flushed as he broke eye contact.
‘’Well,’’ You started, pulling away before skipping ahead of the Doctor, turning around to yell, ‘’Why don’t you tell me all about that when you take me on a date to make up for this disaster of a trip.’’ You grinned at him, before turning around once again, leaving the Doctor behind, his eyes growing wide.
‘’Wh- A date? Hey, (Y/n), wait up.’’

Light In The Darkness - 9
Soulmates had the ability to make one’s life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren’t so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 9 - Getting Acquainted
The inhabitants of Black Hat’s manor were an… unusual group, if you had to be honest. Sure, their skills and interests weren’t that different from the common people, but it was their relation to each other, that you found interesting. You had no idea why they worked for Black Hat, or, well, Demencia’s reason was pretty clear, but 5.0.5 and Flug? You had no idea. Even if Black Hat seemed to want to make a good impression with you, you still witnessed how he treated his subordinates, and yet, they stayed with him. You could ask, but you weren’t that close yet, so you decided to wait.
They really are a strange bunch – you thought, as you ducked behind the sofa, avoiding a destructive beam of light coming from one of Flug’s inventions. Demencia had of course thought it would be an entertaining toy, which led to the rest of you dodging for you lives, as she waved it around manically, enjoying the chaos.
‘’Demencia, that’s enou--.. AAH! Nonono!’’ Flug shook his coat, to put out the flames, before the hole Demencia had caused could become bigger, as Demencia clutched her stomach in laughter.
‘’Oh poor Flug. Don’t act like you haven’t got a pile of those stuffed away somewhere. It’s all you ever wear!’’
You let out a scream, as a beam pierced through the sofa, missing your head by an inch. As you scrambled backwards on your butt, Flug, who was too distracted by avoiding Demencia’s assault, tripped on you. Untangling yourself from Flug took longer than expected, which gave Demencia more than enough time to aim and shoot. The last thing you saw was a green light filling your vision, before it extinguished, and all went dark.
And the first thing that you saw, was your own reflection in a set of black goggles.
‘’ARE YOU OKAY? Oh, I don’t even know what the effect of that ray would be on humans! I never even got to test it before Demencia stole it!’’
‘’Considering what it did to the sofa, it ‘prolly aint anything good.’’ Demencia spoke up with a smirk, sitting on the top of a table on the other side of the room, her legs crossed, while her face rested in the palm of her hands.
Looking down at yourself, you noticed that you had been placed in what could only be described as a makeshift bed - it certainly didn’t feel comfortable, like a real bed should.
‘’Do you feel anything strange? Anything at all? Oh this is just the worst thing that could happen right now. Hang on, I should have some sort of invention with healing properties somewhere. Just, stay where you are.’’ Flug rambled while running out the room.
You listened to Flug’s frantic footsteps disappear slowly, before you turned to look at Demencia, who was playing with a small machine that looked relatively harmless. At least, she didn’t seem to be out for your blood at that moment, which gave you an opportunity to talk to her.
‘’You and Flug… you don’t seem very happy about each other.’’
She scoffed in reply, ‘’Of course we don’t. Why would I ever be happy to be around such a stick-in-the-mud? All he does is just make stuff, and even if his things fun to play with, he never actually let’s me play with them. That doesn’t stop me though.’’ She cackled, as you let out a small sigh, and replied; ‘’Yeah, no shit.’’
Then it went quiet.
You didn’t know what to say. You didn’t really know anything about Demencia, other than the fact that she loved Black Hat and chaos, and that she disliked Flug because he wasn’t as… immature, as she was. You definitely didn’t want to talk about Black Hat, fearing it would make her remember that you were a potential ‘threat’ to her (nonexistent) love life, and make her attack you. The effects of the ray hadn’t worn off yet, and you doubted you could evade any of her attacks.
‘’…It’s not bad here though.’’
‘’Huh?’’
Demencia coiled her hair around herself tightly, hiding her face in the green strands, ‘’I said, it’s not bad here. Even when my Darling isn’t around, at least I can annoy those two… so, I don’t hate them.’’ She said, her voice muffled, and almost reluctant, ‘’But I don’t like you.’’ She sneered, ‘’You think you’re safe in this place? With me around? HAH! You might as well just leave now. I’ll be nice and give you five minutes to run.’’ The lizardgirl spoke, with her nose in the air.
‘’i’m not going to run.’’ You uttered calmly.
She stared back at you, ‘’…You’re not?’’
‘’No.’’
‘’Pft-‘’ she blew a raspberry, while she buried herself in her coil once again.
‘’I’m going to stay here, you know? I don’t know when this threat will be gone, and I can’t say what I’ll do when it is.’’
She shifted in her coil, letting her eyes poke out behind her hair, her eyebrows knit tightly as she glared at you.
‘’Is it because you love him? That you don’t wanna leave?’’
‘’I didn’t say that I didn’t want to lea…-‘’
‘’No, but it’s pretty obvious, you know. I may not be as smart as Flug, but I’m not dumb!’’ She hissed, but it wasn’t aimed at you, just nowhere in particular. Did you love him? Definitely not. But did you want to leave? Probably? These past days your emotions have been so hard to understand, like there were too many all at once, which made them melt together. It was much like mixing a bunch of colorful paint together, only for it to turn into a boring brown.
‘’I don’t love him… but he’s my soulmate, which means it’ll probably happen sooner or later, if we continue spending time together.’’ You spoke carefully, looking down at your hands to avoid Demencia’s glare, ‘’You’ve made it very clear that you’d rather have me gone, but I think we both know that’s not gonna happen, so why don’t we just try to live with each other? We can be friends? If you’d like?’’
‘’No.’’
Welp, guess that plan didn’t work.
‘’You’re my rival.’’ She said, freeing herself from her protective ball, and jumping the distance from the table, right to the end of the bed. Before you could react, she had placed both her hands on either side of you, and her face was right in front of yours, a smug grin on her face.
‘’Did you really think that I, the great and evil Demencia, would become friends with the likes of you? Someone who is an obstacle to me? You know, I think I finally understand what my beloved is thinking. HE wants ME… to overcome you.’’ She moved one of her hands, to point dramatically at your face. ‘’I can’t kill you, which means I have to find some OTHER way to get you out of the way. It’s all a test, to see if I’m really worthy of his love, OOHh, but don’t worry darling, I, the fantastical and mystical Demencia,, will of course prove myself worthy.’’
At this point, she was just talking to herself, making you feel as if you were observing a theatrical piece, with the way she empathized her words and gestures, caught up in daydreams of evil love shared with Black Hat.
‘’That’s… okay too, I’ll… do my best to be a worthy rival, I guess.’’ You chuckled uneasily.
‘’Pftt- worthy? Good to hear you’ll at least be trying, even if it’s totally impossible.’’ She bellowed with laughter.
You jumped, while Demencia merely turned her head to look, at the doorway where Flug now stood, having just slammed open the door.
His chest heaved as he chocked out the words, ‘’Demencia did you do anything to them? I swear, I will lock you in the tube if yo…-‘’
‘’No! No, she didn’t do anything. We just talked.’’ You interrupted, gaining confused stares from both Flug and Demencia.
‘’…If you say so. Anyhow, I managed to find the device I was looking for. I just need to hook it up to this and we’ll be all set. Don’t worry, you’ll be up and running in no time.’’
As he shuffled around with the cords of the machine, you turned to face Demencia once again, whispering quietly to her.
‘’You’re on.’’
----
On other end of the mansion, was its owner. The rays of the setting sun let him know, that he had wasted another day on doing nothing about his situation.
He was getting anxious. This whole ‘soulmate’ business had not moved forward at all, since he had last seen you. No matter how much he cringed at the thought, he wanted to see you, to talk to you, to figure out what… To figure out something, anything, that would make sense.
He was interrupted by a Hatbotl-er.
‘’Client 7589A2 has requested a meeting. He would like to have a closer look at the mutant gun, that he ordered. According to your schedule, these days are open…-‘’
He had to be patient. Business came first.

Light In The Darkness - 8
Soulmates had the ability to make one’s life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren’t so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 8 - A Warm Welcome
‘’DARLING!’’
Black Hat’s eyes flitted over to Demencia, who had immediately stopped her attempted assault at you, her now heart-shaped eyes ogling Black Hat, her whole stance shifting from aggressive to flirty faster than you could blink. Black Hat didn’t seem impressed. In fact, his shifting and wavering form now inched closer towards you all, causing all three members of the organization to take a cautious step backwards. Flug was the first to take a brave step forward, as he had untangled himself from Demencia.
‘’Sir, I- uh, I can explain..,-‘’
‘’QUIET, you’ve already been enough of a nuisance. You three will keep quiet and clean this mess up.’’ He pointed at the bags that lay scattered on the ground. ‘’As for you,’’ both 5.0.5 and you let out a yelp, as a big shadowy hand rose from the floor, and snatched you out of 5.0.5’s grip, ‘’you’ll be spared the company of these fools.’’
As Black Hat turned around to return to his office, the hand followed, leaving you to glance helplessly at the others, as the doors closed behind you, leaving you alone with Black Hat. As the sound of scrambling steps were heard from outside, the giant hand slowly sank into the floor and disappeared, letting you down in the process.
‘’You’ll have to excuse me, had I knew you would come to my mansion, I would have made sure Demencia was locked up. However, I doubt you could just waltz in on your own, so that begs the question, why are you here? Not that I mind, of course…’’ He let out a low chuckle, as he circled his desk to sit down in his chair. You let out a small nervous laugh, totally unprepared for this situation.
‘’About that… erm, the thing is, I was attacked in my home, by some unknown people, and, uh, Flug showed up and helped me, and theeen he invited my to stay here. Because, you know, it would be too dangerous to…-‘’ You babbled.
‘’Yes, I see. For once, it seems like my subordinate has managed to make a good decision.’’ He grumbled, ‘’I’ll have a room arranged for you. I have certain things that need to be taken care of, so in the meantime, the three idiots will be your company. I’m not happy about it, but I’d rather not have you wandering around alone, as there are many things in this mansion you should not be near.’’ He rose from the chair, and made his way to you, ‘’I would not want my little light to get hurt, least of all in my own domain.’’ He stood before you, leaning down closer to your face, to a point where you would probably have been able to feel his warm breath… if he had any? Now that he had stopped talking, you noticed that his chest was not moving, indicating that he wasn’t breathing. As he awaited a response from you, you placed your hand on his chest beside the light, in a sudden fit of curiosity, to feel if he had any heartbeat. Nothing. His chest was cold and it somehow felt hollow? As if the outer layer of his skin was the only part of his body that was solid, and there was nothing behind it to offer any resistance to your hand pressed against it.
The incredibly silence of the room pulled you from your thoughts, and you noticed just how stiff Black Hat’s form had become. Casting a quick glance at his face, you saw that his eyes were evading you, his face scrunched up into what could possibly be described as a bashful expression, but it disappeared before you could be totally sure. His hands clasped yours abruptly, removing it from his chest, he yelled; ‘’Flug!’’
Immediately, you heard noise from somewhere in the manor. In only a few seconds, a winded Flug made his presence, knees shaking and chest heaving, as if he had run a mini-marathon to get to the office.
‘’Flug! Show them around the mansion, and prepare a room for them. When you’re finished, report back to me.’’
-
Black Hat looked down at his chest, seeing the light slowly fade into nothing, as you and Flug walked further away from the office. They were here. They were right by his side, but not because they wanted to. They had been attacked.
He could feel his chest tighten in irritation, as he mulled over the situation. He should have known. He was supposed to know about everything that happened in the underground, yet somehow, this planned attack had gone by him, and it had nearly cost his soulmate their life. Was it because he hadn’t followed the daily news the last couple of days? Seeing as nobody in the underground had talked about this, they might have just been petty robbers or murderers; or they had managed to keep their lips sealed about their plan and their motive. He didn’t know, but it didn’t matter. Their motives, plans and ambitions meant nothing to him. His soulmate was safe, but that would not result in any mercy from him.
But there was one threat in the mansion that had to be taken care of.
-
The tour didn’t take long. Sure, you were in a mansion, and mansions are usually big, but many of the rooms where off-limits, which only left the more ‘casual’ rooms, such as the kitchen, the halls, the sofa room and so on. At some point, 5.0.5 had joined your group, and Flug had left him with the task of bringing you to your new room, as Flug himself had to go back to Black Hat.
‘’Sir? You wanted to see me?’’
‘’I want you to keep Demencia on a thight leash. I don’t care if you have to do it literally, she is not to cause any discomfort towards our guest, do I make myself clear?’’
Shocked by the abrupt demand, Flug paused for just a moment, before he responded, ‘’Yes, as always, sir! I’ll do my best to keep her in check.’’
He paused again.
‘’Er… I will of course do what you have asked me to do, but as you’re probably aware of, Demencia doesn’t really listen to me, so if I might come with a suggestion, then perhaps you should talk to her? She’s attacked (y/n) before, and I think she doesn't take it very seriously because of the way you reacted back then.’’
‘’What do you mean, doctor?’’ Black Hat spoke with slight venom in his voice, obviously displeased at having his orders questioned, no doubt. Flug was already on edge, but of course his trainwreck of a brain couldn’t figure out how to use the brakes.
‘’I mean, I can’t recall a time where you’ve reacted so calmly to a mistake, ever. Perhaps, you’ve become a bit… soft?’’
Black Hat scoffed, ‘‘Do not mistake that for ‘softness’, dear doctor. The only reason I made no punishment for you three fools, is because nothing happened to them. Had you failed in stopping Demencia… There would have been consequences.’’ Black Hat kept his voice calm, but Flug didn’t need to be spoken to in a special tone, to recognize the severity of the threat. Black Hat might have blown a couple of thousand fuses, whenever Flug messed up an invention, or Demencia/5.0.5 were bothering him, but if his soulmate had been killed, the trio would no doubt have been killed too. His angry fits might have made him appear as a comic and unserious character, but this man – this thing – that stood in from of him, had no qualms with disposing of him and the others in less than a heartbeat. Black Hat might have donned the face of a man – or at least something that resembled it – but he was not a humanly being, and in moments like these, Flug wondered how he could have ever forgotten.
‘’Demencia, I can assure you, that Black Hat will be very disappointed with you, if you continue trying to attack his soulmate. They’re here because we are trying to keep them from harm, and I’m sure that it’s safe to assume that Black Hat would rather have to replace you, than he would let you hurt them.’’
‘’Cheh,’’ Demencia clicked her tongue, ‘’You’re so serious all the time. But fine! If it is what my darling wishes, then I guess I’ll play nice. Besides, my darling is smart. He’ll see that they’re no good for him sooner or later.’’ She clasped her hands in front of her chest and sighed dreamily, ‘’Then I’ll get rid of them for him, and he’ll definitely praise me for disposing of the trash. Maybe he’ll even let me…-‘’
‘’Okay, okay, I don’t need to hear that! Just act civilized and don’t freak them out. Even you should be able to do that.’’ Flug stated irritably.
While the two were bickering in the other end of the mansion, you had placed yourself in a comfy sofa, 5.0.5 laying by your side, letting out happy squeals as you scratched his tummy. Of course Demencia’s constant attacking had scared you, but nevertheless you felt welcomed. It was nice that you had somewhere to stay, while this whole mess was happening. You definitely did not want to stay in the house where you had just been attacked. Who knows if anybody else was planning to try to kill you like those two guys before.
A low humming broke you out of your trance, and 5.0.5 let out a curious bork, as you fished out your vibrating phone from your pocket.
Mr. Grutio
Oh. Why was he calling you all of a sudden? It was usually the receptionist who called you when there had been a change of plans or anything of the like, hardly ever Mr. Grutio himself, so why would…-
You flinched and looked down to see 5.0.5’s head placed in your lap, looking up at you, his eyes wordlessly asking about your wellbeing. You pat his head.
‘’It’s okay. It was just a phonecall. I can handle it.’’
Petting 5.0.5 with one hand, you used the other to pick up the now silent phone. You read the message that popped onto the screen; ‘’xxx-xxx-xxx has called and left a voicemail. Hear voicemail.’’
You pressed the ‘’Hear voicemail’’ button, and heard Mr. Grutio’s voice; ‘’Hello, (y/n)? I saw what happened on the news, and I’m calling to hear if you’re okay. No one knows where you are, and… just, please, call me back if you hear this message. I want to know if you are safe and sound. And if you’re in danger, I can help you. Please call me back if you can.’’
Well, well, well, if it wasn’t the consequences of your actions. What were you supposed to do? Maybe it was best to lay low, and let everyone believe that you were dead? People would be sad, sure, but was it really so selfish to prioritize your life above their pain? You allowed yourself not to care. There was no one in your daily civilian life, with whom you were close enough to trust completely, so better be safe than sorry.
Besides, after being given such a warm welcome, how could you just leave?

The Real World and The Real You - 1
You weren’t surprised when your friend and classmate Nina, popular and beautiful as she was, had started receiving emails from an ’unknown admirer’. Even though the messages were rather flattering, something about them seemed off, and you could not help but feel that Nina might have gotten involved in some trouble. You certainly weren't wrong.
Johan Liebert x Reader x Nina Fortner/Anna Liebert
Chapter 1 - Enter, Nina Fortner
‘’Now then, ladies and gentlemen… What was the basis for the ruling the judge made regarding the events in Stuttgart in 1986?’’ The classroom was silent. The grey-haired professor gazed upon the students seated with his hawk-like eyes. No one had raised their hand to answer the question. ‘’My, my. Silence? Is this some sort of Oriental Zen temple or something?’’ His eyes scanned the classroom, obviously searching for his next prey. Panic flared up in your chest, when professor Kronecker’s eyes were pointed at you. However, you were able to release a sigh of relief, when his eyes moved to a male classmate instead. ‘’Mr. Eimer! I would like to hear your answer to this question.’’ The man instantly straightened a bit from his slouched position, giving a bewildered ‘’Huh?’’ at the sudden attention. It seemed that he hadn’t been paying attention to the lesson, which you silently thanked him for, as it made him the more obvious prey for the professor. Everyone knew that you should at least look engaged in the lesson, if you wanted to avoid being called out in front of everyone. Stammering out a broken and unfinished sentence, the man was spared, as Kronecker looked away from him, and asked the students if any of them were able to answer the question. ‘’All right, can anyone break this silence?’’ You might have had considered it funny, if you weren’t panicking on the inside, as a woman with sandy blonde hair burst into the classroom, before leaning down to place her hands on her knees, as she gasped for air. Just like all the others in the room, your eyes were trained on the newcomer, who you recognized easily as your friend Nina Fortner. Commenting on her lateness, professor Kronecker repeated the question to Nina. Still breathing heavily, Nina tried her best to answer the question; ‘’What? Oh, yes. That is… The defendant claimed that the kidnapping was the objective and the death of the victim was accidental. After carefully examining the situation it was concluded that the murder was indeed accidental. Therefore, because the murder was a crime of passion I believe the murderer was merely sentenced to fifteen years in prison.’’ While your classmates stared at Nina in awe at her quick answer, the grumpy professor’s lips turned up into a small but genuine smile, praising Nina for her answer and told her to take her seat. It was only then that Nina raised her head to look up and cheerfully reply with a ‘’Yes professor.’’

A very short one. Would you believe that this is the first fanfic I ever began writing?

Light In The Darkness - 7
Soulmates had the ability to make one’s life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren’t so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 7 - Time To Face Reality
‘’So, when exactly are we going to deliver the weapon to the client? It’s been quite a while since we stole it, and yet we still have it. OOH, did we actually just fool him into giving us money, and then we keep the weapon? Dibs on trying it first! I wanna try turning people into mutants! Just imagining their stupid faces while they slowly lose their old bodies…-‘’
‘’Demencia, I’m gonna have to stop you there.’’ Flug held up his hand to shush her, ‘’We are not keeping the weapon for ourselves. The client is just not ready to receive it yet, we are holding it for him till he’s ready, and you are in no way allowed to touch it or use it, do I make myself clear? Demencia?’’ He called her name, but the lizard girl had already stopped listening, jumping over to 5.0.5 and harassing him instead. He should probably lock up the weapon, as Demencia would without doubt try to use it, her ever-so rebellious side shining through at all times. But that would have to be done later, as of right now; he had to pry her off a distressed 5.0.5.
He did ask Black Hat about it later, though, but the answer was the same that he had given Demencia. Still feeling slightly unsure about the plan, he decided to ask Black Hat about what the rest of the villains thought. They undoubtedly knew that they were behind the attack, and while most villains knew to stay out of Black Hat’s way, there were always a few (often people who were new to the business), that tried to prevent them from succeeding in order to further their own gains (it was unnecessary to say that they never came out victorious, but they were still quite a pain in the behind).
‘’I know what goes on in the underworld, Flug. One does not just become the ‘top dog’ by simply being evil; you have to keep yourself updated on what is happening in the shadows too. Most villains have already accepted my reasons for destroying that lousy bank as a show of power, so there’s hardly any reason to worry about someone meddling with our plans, trying to steal what we have stolen. We will proceed as planned.’’ And with that, Black Hat had turned his high chair towards the window, effectively shutting down any chance of further discussion.
While Demencia and 5.0.5 were unbothered by Black Hats nonchalance, Flug was not. It was stupid, he knew that much. Black Hat’s Organization had never lost to anyone before, but his anxiety-riddled mind never let him know peace, as it constantly conjured the most unrealistic and terrible outcomes, often being that he and his teammates would suffer utter defeat at someone else’s hands. The fact that they were dealing with a new and unknown client only made his anxiety worse, as he felt safe when he knew what he was dealing with, hence why he always made sure to look into whomever they came across, be it in a casual or professional setting, just like with Black Hat’s soulmate. It was always easier dealing with the ‘unknown’, when you could gather the slightest of information about it, and use it to your advantage sooner or later. But as of now, he was left in the dark, and there was one glaring weakness that shone through it. As stated earlier, his brain often made up the most unlikely scenarios, but it never hurt to take precautions.
‘’So, you’re telling me that you actually did see who committed the attack? And that it was Black Hat? And that you’re only telling me this now?’’
Sweat was gathering on your brow, your eyes locked onto the floor, as you nodded your head. The police officer in front of you let out an exasperated sigh, as he rubbed his temple with his hands, and let out a low murmur; ‘’Oh God.’’
It had taken a long time for you to make the decision, but you had finally made up your mind after watching the last several broadcasts on TV about the attack. Everyone was going on about the unknown ‘thing’ that was stolen from the safe, and who in the world it could be in the hands of. Of course it was most likely a villain, but which villain is what made all the difference. Was it a truly dangerous one, or simply one that was more of an annoyance and was only known as a ‘villain’ because people didn’t care to argue with a harmless person, whose ego was just a tad too big for their own good. And now that you knew not to fear Black Hat, you had decided to take the chance, to try and calm the people before they panicked.
‘’I know that I should have told you sooner, but there were certain… things, that I needed time to think over, before I could gather the courage to talk about it.’’
‘’I understand. It’s always dangerous to be the one to deliver information about villains to the police. God, they really should make it illegal for newspapers to publish stories about ‘whistleblowers’ like you. But of course, they only care about money, so if a few people go missing because of their articles, it’s suddenly ‘not their problem’ and ‘out of their hands’.’’ He huffed.
Fumbling with your fingers, you waited patiently for his next move. Had this been a rushed decision? Definitely. But you felt that if you had not made up your mind now, you might never have stopped discussing with yourself. Everything about this situation was stupid, but it was reality for you. Difficult problems have always been a part of life, but that doesn’t mean that one ever gets used to them, and is able to face them without wanting to run away. You certainly felt like running right now. You hadn’t thought of the paparazzi. You had just innocently assumed that you could walk in, say what you needed to say, get out, go home, go to bed. But of course, life was never just that simple.
‘’Well, we'll probably just end up writing down the case and then never work on it again, now that we know Black Hat is behind it. That’s just how it’s always been, but I’m not gonna lie and say that this doesn’t make me frustrated, because it sure as hell does, but you did the right thing. Once we announce it was Black Hat’s doing, people will probably calm down and forget about it soon.’’ He said, as he scooted backwards in his chair and stood, walking out of the back of the police station, with you following his lead.
‘’Nevertheless, we appreciate the info.’’ He shook your hand, and told you to have a nice day when you exited the police station. During your uneventful walk home, you took some time to ponder what the policeman had said. Had a person from a different reality listened in on your conversation, they would undoubtedly have questioned the logic behind the policeman’s words. Why would people calm down, if they heard that the most powerful and evil being in the world had stole something so important that it was kept in the S.I.F.A. safe? He had always been the one at the top, the one that could never be defeated, no matter how much of a struggle humanity put up.
Keyword; had. He had always been feared, but with time his image had turned from that of a supervillain, to an obscured villain from a children’s tale, like the boogeyman. Since he no longer appeared much in public, he was in some way distanced from regular people’s lives, the other villains getting much more daily attention and fear due to them constantly ‘being near’. They were a part of the daily life; while Black Hat had been made into some sort of ‘entity’ that was both feared and idolized, much like a god, who descended from his throne every once in a while to wreck havoc, the only difference being that his existence was never debated.
After that, a few days passed by. You went about your life as usual, making sure to take it easy, often spending your afternoons watching movies and eating unhealthy stuff instead of watching the news like usual. You felt that you deserved the peace and quiet. Just tune out the cruelties of the world and feel the joy of re-watching that silly kids movie that you had always loved. The days were peaceful, and everything felt okay. That is, until one day where you were returning home from grocery shopping. You felt as if someone was looking at you. The unwelcome feeling was impossible to mistake for something else, and yet there was no one around that seemed to be looking at you. A small group of young girls were currently surrounding a stray cat, which happily accepted the attention it was given by them, and the rest of the street was barren. The sun was still up, but it would be dark soon. Figuring you would feel safer in your house with your metal bat, you walked just a bit faster the whole way home.
Dropping your bags on the kitchen floor, you made your way to the closet in the hallway, grabbing your bat before going back to the kitchen to unpack the groceries that needed to be put in the refrigerator. When you were done with that, you would go to your room and lock the door. There was no guarantee that you were in danger, but better safe than sorry. Who knew, maybe the lizard girl from before had gotten out and was tracking you down once again. Closing the refrigerator, you gripped the bat with both hands and exited the kitchen. The silence in the house made you agitated, and your cursed yourself for being so paranoid. Of course, that was before something hit your head from behind. Letting out a pained scream, you braced yourself against the wall, as the pain blinded you for a moment. You were able to make out two figures before you, one significantly bigger than the other, as the biggest one advanced towards you.
You swung at him, but he ducked and punched you in the stomach, forcing all the air out of your lungs. You dropped the bat and fell to your knees, your eyes watering as you struggled to regain your breath.
The larger man gripped your hair and forced you to look up at him, smirking as you groaned in pain, before turning to his partner.
‘’Just wait till we deliver their head to Black Hat. He might not think much of us ‘lesser’ villains, but I’ve got a feeling he’ll definitely remember us after this, and just think of the possibilities being in Black Hat’s favor will bring. We should get out of here before anyo…- AAARGH!!’’ The man let out a scream, as his body convulsed violently, his eyes going white, as he collapsed on the floor. His teammate let out a yelp, whipping around to catch a glimpse of the attacker, but was met with the same treatment before he could do anything.
‘’Amateurs. Absolute amateurs. You always have someone on lookout when you break into a private house.’’ Flug sighed, as he put down the stun gun he was wielding.
‘’Flug!? What in the world are you doing here?’’
‘’What am I doing? You haven’t seen the news? Your face is plastered all over the newspapers. They’re all talking about how an ‘unnamed civilian managed to survive an encounter with Black Hat’. I figured something like this might happen, so I came as fast as I could.’’
‘’But how could anyone have known? I never told anyone who would tell the press about me.’’
‘’Well, I’ve read some of the articles, and it’s not because someone knew, they just assumed correctly. From what I’ve gathered, it seems that someone saw you leave the police station and when the police stated that they suddenly knew that Black Hat was behind the attack, but didn’t want to announce the identity of the source, this person went on the Internet and wrote that they saw you. This garnered a lot of attention and before long, someone had managed to shoot a photo of you while you were in public, recognizing you from the description given by the original poster. Because it went viral, it made the news quickly, and that’s basically how you got famous, and also how you got on every villain’s hit list.’’
You hugged your legs, and rocked back and forth softly, trying to prevent yourself from vomiting.
‘’U-um, you know, if you want to… you could probably come with me.’’ Flug scratched his neck nervously.
‘’Huh?’’ You looked at him questioningly.
‘’Well, I mean… These guys probably won’t be the only ones attacking you, and if I hadn’t showed up, you would probably be dead already, so for your own safety (and mine), how about you come live with us? I’m sure that Black Hat would prefer that too.’’ He chuckled nervously, avoiding eye contact with you. ‘’You are his soulmate after all.’’
It wasn’t like you had any other choice, and you wondered just how much your life had changed in such a short span of time, as Flug helped you pack your bags and get ready to leave for Black Hat’s mansion.
Black Hat’s eye twitched, as he heard a commotion outside his office. He had finally gotten some peace, and then it was suddenly ruined for whatever stupid reason his subordinates had this time. Whatever it was, it could wait. Crumpling the paper he was reading in his hands, he marched to the door and threw it open, getting ready to destroy their eardrums, but he froze.
Nothing, nothing could have prepared him for what he saw on the other side. Demencia had her axe out and was wrestling against Flug, who yelled at her to ‘stay back’. Just beside them, stood 5.0.5, cradling Black Hat’s soulmate protectively in his arms, as he eyed the violent lizard girl nervously. Several bags laid scattered on the floor, as if they had been dropped in a hurry.
When Black Hat slammed the door into the wall, they all stilled, only then acknowledging his presence. Black Hat felt his body distorting, as rage overtook him.
‘WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!?’’

Light In The Darkness - 6
Soulmates had the ability to make one's life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren't so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 6 - One More To the Family
At the break of dawn, the Black Hat mansion was silent. Three figures were deep in sleep, with the fourth confined in his office, doing who knows what. It didn’t take long before the sun’s first rays shining through the pink window disturbed a sleeping figure. Stretching like a cat would, the blue bear consciousness slowly returned from slumber. The bear, known as 5.0.5 by the mansion’s residents, had no fixed role in the household. Dr. Flug was tasked with making new weapons and gadgets that could be sold for profit, Demencia was the one who did most of the dirty work, and Black Hat was the leader. 5.0.5 had no specific role, so he usually didn’t do anything productive, just spending time with his family, or doing small tasks such as cleaning, making food or waking those who were still sleeping, just like he would do today.
Flug was easy to find. As many other nights, he had fallen asleep in his lab, his head cradled in his arms on his desk.
‘’Baow.’’ The bear barked gently, as his large paws shook the doctor the best he could, without getting his claws caught in the scientist’s white coat. After the doctor had started grumbling and stretching, 5.0.5 decided to make his way to the last sleeping resident in the mansion, but was met with a surprise.
As he entered the dark room, the only light source being Demencia’s containment tank, he noticed that it was empty. It wasn’t supposed to be empty. There was no way that Demencia would have been able to get out of it herself, so he took off towards the doctor’s lab, hoping that his dad was still there.
‘’Ugh,’’ Flug let out a tired moan, as he rubbed his goggles, before realizing his mistake and moving his hand under his paperbag, ‘’what is it 5.0.5? Did you knock over a vase again? I’ve already told you, you gotta be more carefu…- WHAT IS THIS!?’’ Flug wrenched his hand out of 5.0.5’s grip, gestulating to the empty tube in the room in a panic. ‘’WHERE IS- oh no…’’ the doctor slouched, his paper-clad head pointing to the floor, as his hands came up to grip the brown bag. ‘’I remember! I forgot to lock her in her tube yesterday because of that client! Oh no, no, no! We have to find her, who knows what she’ll do to them.’’ 5.0.5’s curious gaze landed on his dad, as he wondered who ‘they’ were. His large, sparkly eyes followed, as the doctor paced around the room, muttering to himself; ‘’…shouldn’t have told her… who knows what she’ll do… and what won’t HE do? What to do, what to do… OH YES! THE TRACKER!’’ The giant blue bear let out a small squeal of surprise, as Flug suddenly shot up, before he stormed out of the room to return to his lab.
‘’Alright, We’ll see you again tomorrow. Have a nice day.’’ The security guard waved to you, as you left the building of I.V.O. after another specialized therapy session. Your therapist, Nettie, was a human woman, not quite one that people would call ‘old’ but she certainly wasn’t young anymore. Nettie was very reassuring and comforting, making it easy for you to talk to her. You supposed she had to be like that, to have this kind of job. You still weren’t sure how this would help, especially since the sessions where tailored to fit something that wasn’t the truth. And not only that, but now Black Hat had actually clarified what he wanted, you felt at ease. It was strange, but for some reason, it made sense to you. You shouldn’t trust what he had said, but there was just this feeling. This feeling that he was actually speaking the truth. At least you could agree with yourself that it wouldn’t really matter much if he were, as the outcome would be the same if he actually weren’t honest.
Shaking your head, you jumped of that train of thought, and hopped onto a new one; just how much he consumed your thoughts. Before the bank had been attacked, and that fateful meeting had taken place, your life had been normal. Days were spent worrying about what to have for dinner, if you could catch your train or daydreaming about meaningless things. It was life. It was simple. It wasn’t… dull, per say, but it was… peaceful, safe, and repetitive. Every day looked much like the last, and the daydreams about your soulmate always presented something new. Even if this person were the most ordinary person one could imagine, simply meeting them would have been enough to pull you away from the monotonous path you were walking on through life. The fact that this particular person turned out to be the most un-ordinary creature on the entire planet, however, was more like if you were going on a car ride and the road had been blocked by a fallen tree, forcing you to take another path. You had no other option if you wanted to keep moving forward.
‘’The best you can do to protect yourself in this case, is to keep it a secret. Of course, everything that is said in this room stays in this room, but you have to understand the importance of this situation that you’ve found yourself in. No one can know.’’
The words that Nettie had said earlier echoed through your head. Black Hat himself might not be a threat, but everyone else could be. Besides, Mr. Grutio was right when he said that nothing could be done against Black Hat. He had conquered the planet multiple times, so even if you told anybody, it would most likely just be filed and then said file would be left in a dusty and dark room, filled to the brim with files for all his other crimes. That’s how you imagined it at least.
Throwing your jacket on the sofa, you grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, eager to have some background noise – you needed something to drown out your thoughts.
‘’… said that the investigation of the biggest bank robbery in recent history is still underway, but they can disclose that something was stolen from the Nation Bank System. It was taken from the S.I.F.A. safe that the bank had made last year, yet no one knows what it has been used for. Several theories have been made and…’’ The S.I.F.A. safe. You had heard of it, but you were in no way or form important enough to know its location, or anything else about it really. It was supposed to be the strongest and best safe the bank could get, and why would anyone need a high-grade safe, if not to keep something valuable or important locked in there?
A noise caught your attention. A small creak came from your roof, it almost sounded like there was a bird shuffling around up there, despite it being close to noon, where the birds had usually returned to their nests. But it was just some slight creaking, perhaps your roof just needed to be checked soon. And now that you thought about it, the front door needed to be oiled too, as it made the most horrendous screech whenever it was being opened or closed. Wow, suddenly, you remembered that spring-cleaning you never got done as well.
Then the thumping started, but it wasn’t on the roof. It came from… the wall? The wall between your living room and the outside. Curiosity urged you to take a look out the window, out into the dark street. The sun had gone down, but the lights hadn’t been turned on yet, flooding the street in a shrouding darkness. There was nothing to see; yet your hand automatically found the latch and opened the window, sticking your head out into the chilly air, a slight breeze rustling your hair. Nothing. Deciding there was no point to this, you went to close the window – and then something grabbed your arm. Letting out a scream, you fell to the floor, as the figured pounced on you.
Green and red were the most prominent colors on the person currently using your body as a cushion.
‘’So, so, so…’’ she drawled out, ‘’looks like Flug’s description wasn’t that far off, it’s actually pretty accurate, but of course it would be, since he’s such a nerd who has nothing better to do with his pathetic life than look at life as it passes him by.’’ She gestured wildly with her hands, before slamming them on either side of your face and leaning down within an inch of your face. ‘’That’s no way to live. You gotta participate in life, is what I, the great and lovable Demencia, has always said. And that means, when someone comes and tries to take your honey-bunny from you…’’ she reached into her large green pile of hair, only to pull out an… axe? (How was that in there??), ‘’you gotta take care of it yourself. Now, little-bittle human, a little nerd-bird has told me about you. Said you were Blackie Hat’s soouulmate and that you’re the reason he’s been acting all weeeird lately, locking himself in his office even more than he used to, and asking weird questions about how people ‘work’ and so oonn… My Blackie’s all messed up and it’s YOUR fault, and I can’t have that. Black Hat’s will miss the awesomeness that is me, if he keeps being distracted by some stupid nobody.’’
She raised her axe above her head; her yellow eye almost seemed to be glowing.
‘’Any last words, nerd?’’
Last words? Maybe some wise words could make her change her mind…-
‘’I take it you’re Demencia?’’
Ah, yes, of course your brain would shut down the moment you face the slightest chance of death.
‘’Yep, that’s me.’’ She chirped, a smile on her face.
‘’It’s nice to meet you?’’
She stared at you, the smile still present. ‘’Can’t say the same.’’
And then she swung.
And stopped. Right before your face.
‘’Demencia get off!’’ Demencia’s body obscured the newcomer, but the voice sounded somewhat familiar, and you already had an educated guess ready for who it was.
‘’Oh no, here comes the fun police. What’s up nerd? Thought you’d still be cuddling with your blueprints after staying up for so long.’’ She sniggered.
‘’No, Demencia, this is no time for jokes! For once, try to use your brain! Do you have any idea what Black Hat might do if they’re hurt? This is the first time he’s ever shown this kind of interest in anyo…-‘’
As the two bickered, a shadow fell over you. Towering over you, stood a giant blue bear; it’s shiny black eyes looking at you with a gentle curiosity. ‘’Baow?’’ It barked, the yellow flower on its head bobbing gently, as it cocked its head to its side.
‘’Um, hi.’’ You gave the bear a small wave, and a forced smile. It didn’t notice it was forced, or perhaps it didn’t care, as it let out a happy ‘baow’, before scooping you up into its arms, hugging you tightly, squeezing you with enormous strength, forcing all air out of your lungs, before letting you down. As you heaved for air, the blue bear made his way to his companion, whom the lizard girl had started clawing at, forcing them apart.
‘’You stupid nerd, how did you even find me? Demencia was so clooose to beating up this enemy! The enemy in the war for the love of my darling!!’’ She yelled, desperately trying to reach Flug.
‘’Demencia, you have a tracker on your leg, and it’s been there ever since the very first time you snuck out to attack someone without permission. In other words, it’s been there for years.’’ Flug deadpanned.
‘’Ah, I see - I should’ve clawed this leg off sooner!!’’ She bared her sharp teeth, before opening her mouth, getting ready to chomp down on her leg. ‘’No, you’re not doing that.’’ Flug said, pulling out a small container from his coat, before he sprayed Demencia with water, making her to hiss and retreat behind the sofa, her head poking out to give one final hiss in your direction. He then turned to you, briefly looking away, as he fumbled with his hands, unsure of what to do with them. ‘’We’re really sorry for breaking into your house, it’s all my fault for letting her know about you, AND PLEASE DON’T TELL BLACK HAT ABOUT THIS…-‘’
‘’Okay, okay, I won’t’’ you reassured him.
‘’…You won’t?’’ you shook your head in affirmation, ‘’That’s a surprise, I imagined that if you were Black Hat’s soulmate you’d be kind of like him… evil, mean and- PLEASE DON’T TELL HIM I SAID THAT EITHER!’’ his hands clasped together, he begged you.
‘’Oh, Flug, you’re so naïve.’’ Demencia spoke up from behind the sofa. ‘’ The best way to keep your enemies quiet is to get rid of them. Simple.’’
‘’We are NOT doing that, I thought I’d made myself very clear! We are going home right this instant, before you can make any more trouble. 5.0.5., get her!’’ The bear nodded before walking behind the sofa and gripped Demencia, who did her best to escape it’s grip, but failed. ‘’Hey! Let go of me you stupid...-‘’ She screamed.
Flug turned to you. ‘’Well… It was… nice meeting you? And I hope? To see more of you in the future – alive, not dead and stuff.’’ Awkward silence ensued. ‘’Ok, bye.’’ He said, before he began pushing the bear and Demencia towards the open window. ‘’You could use the front door if you’d like’’ You offered, pointing towards it, but Flug appeared too busy pushing 5.0.5 through the window to hear you.
It was very late when the trio returned to the mansion, Demencia having grown tired of fighting against 5.0.5’s grip, now only grumbling while being carried. After having sent 5.0.5 to bed, and locked up Demencia in her tube, Flug was ready to go back to bed himself, after a whole day of chasing Demencia.
‘’Might I ask where you’ve all been?’’ A low growl came from behind him. Oh boy, just what he needed.
‘’Uh, nowhere important, sir.’’ He lied.
‘’You’ve never been good at lying, Flug.’’ Black Hat’s coat swished, as he made a 180-degree turn. ‘’My office, now.’’
Flug explained. Of course many excuses were uttered every two or three seconds, which only served to make Black Hat more and more irritated, but for some unexplainable reason, Black Hat did not react as Flug had expected him to. Instead of losing his temper, the moment Flug told him about Demencia’s plan, he stayed calm, and waited for Flug to finish. When Flug stopped talking, he merely told him to ‘make sure to keep an eye on Demencia in the future’, and then dismissed him.
Internally, the doctor let out a sigh of relief, his hope of living another day had been granted. Now he just needed to get out of the office before Black Hat could change his mind…-
‘’Did they say anything?’’ Flug turned abruptly to his boss, who had moved his attention to the mountain of paperwork on his desk.
‘’Huh? About what?’’
‘’About me.’’ Black Hat’s stare was still fixed on the papers, as he signed them.
‘’No. They didn’t sir… Um, sorr…-’’
‘’Dismissed.’’ Black Hat cut him off.
Flug then left the office. He had worked for Black Hat for several years, and could proudly proclaim that he had gotten pretty good at picking up on Black Hat’s emotions, and the disappointment radiating off his boss surely meant that he would get to see (y/n) again in the future.

I’ve Got No Strings - 2
After many years of hard work, the Marine had finally given you the title of Vice Admiral. Your life seemed perfect, but it all changed, when you learned of your limited lifespan. Battling against an incurable disease, which not even Dr. Vegapunk could defeat, you resign from the Marine and decide to live out your last few months in peace on your home island. One of the Schichibukias however, has other plans for you.
Chapter 2 - Visit
‘’It’s very simple, really.’’ One calm voice spoke, barely heard through the panicked yelling filling the room. ‘’I want to know why they resigned. All you have to do is tell me, and I’ll be on my way.’’ He continued with a wide grin stretched across his face.
‘’We’ve already told you, it’s classified information, Doflamingo!’’ One of the marine officers yelled in panic, his body moving without his permission, the gun is his hands now pointed at his colleague, who too had been forced into a battle-ready position against his will, his hands trembling around the sword.
‘’Fufufufu, classified? For who? As far as I know, I’m one the Marine’s side, and as such, I deserve to know what’s going on, don’t you agree?’’ His fingers moved, forcing the officer to place his finger on the trigger of the gun.
‘’What is going on here?’’ Came a strong voice. Vice admiral Tsuru stood in the doorway, taking in the chaotic scene before her, the officers crying out for her, ‘’Vice Admiral Tsuru! Make him stop, please!’’
She glanced at the grinning man, shaking her head while letting out a tired sigh. ‘’Won’t you be a good kid and let the officers go? I’ll listen to whatever you have to say.’’
As soon as the invisible bonds had disappeared, the officers scampered out the door, yelling their thanks to Tsuru on the way. The tall schichibukai had sat down on the top of the table in the middle of the room, fiddling with a newspaper that Tsuru had left there herself earlier this morning. It was the reason why she had come back to this room in the first place. Stumbling upon a schichibukai in marine headquarters, when there had been no call for a meeting, was totally unprecedented. Nevertheless, she had a hunch as to why he was here, one that involved the front page of said newspaper.
‘’That former subordinate of yours,’’ the pink-clad man started, ‘’They’ve come a long way, haven’t they? After several years of hard work they’ve finally had their efforts acknowledged.’’ His index finger was tapping against the picture of your face, as he looked down on it. ‘’But then,’’ he abruptly turned to face the older woman, ‘’They suddenly resign, with no explanation provided as to why. Now, we both know that this particular person would never just resign, especially after this well-deserved promotion, so I figured there was some other reason. Am I wrong?’’
Had she been younger and less experienced, she would easily have bowed under the threatening undertones of his question, but Tsuru had known this man for a long time now, having spent much of her career chasing him, before he joined forces with the Marine. Where others saw a dominant and powerful pirate, she saw a spoiled kid, who was too used to getting what he wanted. As long as she provided him with something satisfactory, he would leave without making a big fuss.
‘’(Y/n). Yes, they did not resign because they wanted to.’’ She turned to close the door behind her, making sure it was locked, before she continued. She was not supposed to tell anyone, therefore she had to make sure that no one heard her do it. ‘’It was decided that the reason for their resignation would be kept secret, in order to ensure their safety. The thing is, it was recently discovered that they suffer from a deadly disease, which we have no cure for. Dr. Vegapunk was asked to look at it, but even he couldn’t do anything. A high-ranking marine officer with a disease, which weakens them, would surely attract a lot of attention from former enemies or other rowdy pirates.’’ She strolled to the open window, her back turned to the silent schichibukai. ‘’They’ve returned to their home, to live in peace for the last few months they have left.’’
‘’Months…?’’ she heard a mutter, before something blew by her, and out of the open window.
Looking out the window, she could see the large figure of Doflamingo disappearing into the sky. Most would consider it an unwise move to let him go to them in their vulnerable state, she thought, as she watched the figure become smaller and smaller, as Doflamingo flew through the sky, off to see a certain someone. But she had figured it all out a long time ago.
They would be alright.
-
It had been a long time, since you last had spent this long at home. The life of a marine officer was busy, and it only got worse once you began ascending the ranks. Paperwork, rough days on the sea and pirates often kept you up, and your first night on the island was one of the best nights you had had in a long while, with nothing to disturb your sleep.
The first morning however, was… weird. You almost felt bad, letting yourself stay in bed for 20 minutes longer than you had planned. Punctuality was expected in the Marine, and after being a marine officer for several years, you had developed an internal clock, which prevented you from sleeping past the sunrise. When the feeling of discomfort became too strong, you hung your blanket on your shoulders, and trudged through your house, out the back door, to the side of the cliff your small house rested upon. The sky was a mix of blue, orange and red, the colors reflecting in the grand ocean that stretched before you, as calm winds blew over the sea to the island. The longing for the sea was already creeping up on you, but it would have to wait. Every second spent worrying, was a second wasted, and you didn’t have much time to waste. Today, you would re-insert yourself into the daily life of the island, with the help of your friendly neighbors. Osla, an old woman, whom you had known since childhood, was the first and only person outside of the marine to know about your condition. Her weary old eyes had been filled with such a sorrow, when you had told her the truth, and it felt weird that you didn’t share the emotion. It seemed as if your brain hadn’t really understood the situation, rendering you in an emotionless state, like a calm ocean with the smallest waves of unease making themselves present every once in a while, before disappearing again, leaving no trace behind.
When you had finally pulled yourself together, and gotten out the front door, it only took a few minutes to reach Osla’s house. Osla was already outside, tending to her garden, her short curly gray hair flowing freely in the wind, her shaky yet strong hands pulling weeds from the ground. Steeling your nerves, you made your way over to her, your fingers trying to smoothen down your civilian clothes, feeling out of place without your marine uniform.
‘’Ready to spend time with your old neighbor, dearie?’’ Osla wiped her hands in the front of her dirty dress, as her brown wrinkly face showed a kind smile. ‘’It’s certainly been a long time since I’ve seen you in person. You’ve been so busy with your career that you’ve never had time to visit us at all. If it hadn’t been for Lucas and Mia, termites would probably have devoured your house long ago.’’ She let out a groan, as she stretched her back, her joints cracking in protest.
‘’Yeah, I’ve been… busy. I got so caught up that I didn’t even think about visiting, to be honest.’’ You admitted embarrassed. To be really honest, you actually had thought about it, but had decided not to. In all your time away from your home island, you had never missed it.
‘’Well, you’re here now, and that’s what matters. I’ve already made a plan for the day, so just let me change my dress and we’ll be ready to go. Oh, I’ve got so much to tell you, you’ll barely have any time to tell me anything about your job.’’
And she did. She never once stopped talking, while you were taking your tour around the island, greeting old acquaintances and seeing what had changed in the years you had been gone. Everyone you met wanted to hear about your life with the marine, especially the kids.
‘’I wanna be a marine captain too when I grow up!’’ One kid had yelled excitedly.
‘’No way, I’ll get (y/n) to train me, and then I’LL become a marine captain!’’ Another yelled in protest.
‘’Huh!? Fight me, then we’ll see who’s most fit for the title!’’ And before you knew it, you were watching two kids brawl on the ground, as Osla and their parents struggled to tear them apart. When they had gotten the kids separated, and made you convince the kids to spend their energy on training instead of useless fighting, Osla and you could finally make it your way up the hills. Considering her age, Osla handled the walk up the steep hills rather well. But still, you offered her your arm just to be courteous. She accepted it happily.
‘’Oh, (y/n), you always were such a helpful child. We always knew you were going to become a model adult for the rest of us to look up to. Your parents had high hopes for you, and I’m glad that I can announce that you’ve met them with no problem… but it’s still a shame the job takes so much of your time. You didn’t even have time to come home and say goodbye to your parents one last time.’’ She finished mournfully, her eyes cast down.
It had been a while since your parents died. They were old, and everyone knew it was coming sooner or later, but when they fell sick, you were too busy chasing a notorious pirate making trouble on the seas, to come home and see them. While you were clashing swords with the criminal, your parents slipped away from this world, leaving you with no family. But at that point, you hadn’t seen them for several years already, and losing them changed nothing in your life. Coming to terms with your own indifference had been hard back then, but those feelings had long since faded.
‘’(Y/N)! OSLA!’’
Coming up behind you was one of the islanders, his long hair ruffled and his cheeks red, as he heaved for air. ‘’The-there’s a schichibukai on the island! He just landed in the middle of the town!’’
A schichibukai? What in the world was one doing here? Schichibukais may be allied with the Marine, but most of them didn’t care about the Government or the laws, so it could only mean trouble for your island. Osla and the man were left behind, as you took off running towards the town, hoping that the unknown pirate hadn’t caused too much trouble.
Before you had even reached the town, you could see the massive crowd that had gathered at the center, forming a circle around someone you couldn’t see. When you got closer, people turned to you, and their frightened faces shifted to show their relief.
‘’(Y/n) is here!’’
‘’(Y/n)! Get that pirate off our island!’’
‘’Get his ass!’’
‘’Kerlton, don’t say such things!’’
‘’Sorry mom.’’
The crowd parted for you, creating a path directly to the center of the circle. And sure enough, there stood a schichibukai. One you recognized rather well.
‘’Doflamingo.’’
Cue his trademarked chuckle resonating through the plaza.
‘’Yo, vice admiral. It’s been while, hasn’t it?’’ He spoke, with the usual suffocating grin on his face.
‘’Not long enough. I could have gone a few more months without seeing you.’’ You replied deadpan, as you made your way to the center, feeling all the villager’s eyes locked on you.
He chuckled once again, ‘’A few months, huh? Do you really have that much time?’’
Your faltered. But you couldn’t. Everyone’s eyes were on you, and there was no room for failure. Picking up the pace, you soon stood in front of the schichibukai, staring up into the red lenses of his sunglasses.
‘’What do you want, Donquixote?’’ You glared at him. Out of all the schichibukais, Doflamingo was definitely one you had to watch out for. In all your years under Tsusuru’s command, you had engaged in many crashes with Doflamingo’s crew, before he allied himself with the Marine, so you knew just how unpredictable he could be.
‘’All you people,’’ He rose up, looking out over the crowd that had gathered in the town square, forming a circle of curious bystanders, ‘’You can scram.’’ He growled.
And they did within seconds. Just a few moments later, the town square was completely empty, except for you and the Schichibukai looming over you.
‘’Why are you here?’’ You asked again.
‘’Well,’’ He started off, taking his sweet time looking at you, before he continued, ‘’I heard a secret.’’ He stated, explaining nothing else.
Taking the bait, you asked, ‘’What secret?’’
‘’C’mon now, we both already know what I’m talking about.’’
You gulped, ‘’And what does that have to do with your sudden visit to my humble island?’’
His grin got bigger, if that was even possible, ‘’I thought, since you have so little time left, that for old times sake, I would give you the generous offer of letting you spend your last few months in Dressrosa.
‘’I’ve already resigned from the Marine. Holding me hostage will give you nothing. The Marine doesn’t care about me anymore.’’ You said, not for one second believing there to be anything ‘goodness’ in his offer.
‘’You know all this, and you still won’t trust me?’’ He held out his hand to you, ‘’If having you with me gives me no advantage whatsoever, then why would it hurt to go with me?’’
You hesitated, ‘’Why should I leave? This is my home, this is where I grew up. I see no more fitting place for me to spend my time.’’
‘’But are you honestly going to miss it?’’ His hand was still out, waiting patiently for you to accept.
You stared at his hand. This was a bad idea, you knew that.
But as you looked at your hand slowly moving towards his, you thought to yourself. You had approximately six months left of your life - maybe even less – so it’s not like any stupid decisions were going to matter much.
As your hand touched his, his hand quickly closed around yours, and before you knew it, you found yourself pulled up through the air, a strangled squeak coming from your throat, as you landed on his back. Your hand gripped onto the pink feathers of his coat, as your other grabbed ahold of his shoulder.
‘’Wai- Wait, wait, what are you doing!?’’ You yelled, as he bent his back to put his hand on the ground.
‘’What am I doing?’’ he laughed, and turned to look at you hanging onto his back, ‘’I’m taking you with me home.’’
With a powerful jump, he flew into the air, as you screamed and held onto his coat with all your might.
‘’Just as you agreed to.’’

Light In the Darkness - 5
Soulmates had the ability to make one’s life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren’t so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 5 - Second Meeting
‘’So, from what you’ve explained to me, it’s safe to say there is a bigger chance for problems than we’ve believed thus far.’’
Mr. Grutio sat before you, behind his desk, his clawed hands folded underneath his chin, as he stared at nothing, silently thinking to himself for a moment. After your trouble with concentrating the whole month, you had finally caved in and decided to tell Mr. Grutio some of the truth. Just as you colleague had said, they’ve had many cases like this before, so they should know how to ease a patients mind.
‘’That’s exactly why I’m here. I though that I’d be able to handle it by myself, as I didn’t notice any major problems, but it has actually been affecting me more than I’d like to admit.’’
He gave you a patient smile, ‘’That’s quite alright. I’ve had others who only told the whole truth several years after the event. Sometimes, people just need to process things, before they can accept them and work towards recovery. However, I’m rather impressed by you. It must’ve been terrifying hiding from Black Hat, while he was only a few feet away. I must ask; have you told the police?’’
You shook your head, feeling a slight nervousness, fearing that he would judge you.
‘’Hm, I see. I think it would be for the best that it stayed a secret.’’
‘’Huh?’’ That was certainly not what you expected him to say. Why in the world should it stay a secret?
‘’I know this must sound rather odd to you, but this is Black Hat we are talking about. Besides the obvious fact that the police and superheroes have never been able to defeat him, you have to think about yourself too. If word somehow gets out, that you’ve managed to survive an encounter with Black Hat, you won’t only have to worry about civilians and news reporters hounding you every second, you will also have to worry about other villains who might come take you down, in order to gain Black Hat’s approval, or simply gain a bit of fame in the underworld. But the most likely outcome is, that Black Hat himself will return to finish the job ‘properly’.’’ He unfolded his hands, and looked into the drawer, pulling out a pamphlet and handing it to you. ‘’We usually offer courses with a psychologist from our organization, who specializes in victims of villain-related events. If you’d like, you can take this pamphlet home with you, and decide if you’d like to accept this offer. We’ll be waiting eagerly for your answer.’’
You stopped by the supermarket on your way home, to get a snack for later. You had the day off tomorrow, so you would stay up late and watch shitty movies while eating junk, just to treat yourself a bit. You deserved it, every day had been a real pain to get through, and now you finally felt at ease. You had someone who could help you through this, and it had been so long since the attack.
‘’This isn’t the last you’ll see of me, my little light.’’
That’s what he had said, but it been so long, so you figured that the incarnation of evil had lost any interest he might have had in you, and decided to simply leave you alone. Perhaps you were just lying to yourself, but if it gave you a moment of peace, then you would gladly accept it. Tonight, you would forget about the world and enjoy yourself.
Wrapped in a blanket, you rested your head on the sofa, looking at the TV-screen, yet registering nothing of what was happening on the screen. Your mind was far away, your body enjoying the warmth provided by the blanket, and the white noise from the TV. Before long, you had fallen asleep, feeling content and safe, for the first time in a long while.
You were awake. Not really though. It was one of those times, were you drifted off to sleep, and then woke slightly, before dozing off again, the same process repeating for a while. You could sense your surroundings, but could not sense the flow of time, as you fell back to sleep in irregular patterns. One of those times, when you were slightly conscious, you could feel that your upper body felt cold, as the blanket had been showed off your shoulders while you were trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. In your sleepy state, you struggled to move the blanket back, failing miserably, as you could barely tell was what up or down when in such a state. It went dark again. The next time you opened your eyes, the blanket was covering your whole body again, tucked into your sides to ensure that it wouldn’t fall off again. That wasn’t something you could have done. Suddenly, you felt too hot. Being under the blanket felt like being surrounded by fire. It became hard to breathe. All traces of sleepiness had disappeared, and your fight or flight instincts kicked in, your body tensing up.
The light had been turned off, making the light coming from your chest all the more noticeable. Another light was present, you could see it close to your window, it was somewhat obscured, as the figure had their back turned to you, looking out the window and into the dark night. It was him. It was Black Hat, the very being you had finally gotten off your mind just mere hours ago, but there he stood, with his arms folded behind his back, his silhouette darker than the night sky. What should you do? It would be a pathetic attempt, but you could try to sneak past him, towards your closet in the hallway, where you kept a metal bat for potential situations like these.
You managed to the blanket off you silently, but didn’t get much further, as the floor let out a big loud creak, as soon as you placed your foot on it. Fuck, why hadn’t you fixed your floor earlier, then this wouldn’t have happened.
‘’Awake already?’’
You were a deer in the headlights, caught in an awkward position with one foot on the floor and one still on the sofa. Slowly, you stood fully from the couch, not once looking away from the unmoving figure.
‘’Why are you here?’’ you managed to get out. His light became much clearer, as he turned to face you.
‘’Didn’t I say that you would see me again? Perhaps I took too long to visit you.’’ He gave a shrug, ‘’Even I need time to plan my next steps, and since I already managed to leave an awful first impression, the second step would of course be to set it right.’’ He walked closer, and when you tried to take a step back, your leg hit the sofa, causing you to fall down onto it. When he was in front of you, he got on one knee and took one of your trembling hands in his.
‘’Neither of us could have imagined this outcome, so I understand that you may not… accept this situation just yet,’’ he lifted your hand to his mouth, his lips grazing your knuckles, as he looked into your eyes that were wide open, with his own half-lidded ones, ‘’but I can assure you, that you have no reason to fear me.’’
His touch made your skin hot. You kind of wanted to pull your hand back, but you still didn’t know what reaction to expect from him, so you didn’t. Instead, you asked him a question;
‘’What do you want?’’
‘’What I want? Didn’t I already explain?’’ He scoffed.
‘’I mean generally.’’ You yanked your hand out of his, cradling it to your chest, ‘’Why bother with me? Am I supposed to believe that you’ve just turned over a new leaf, and suddenly care about a thing like love? I may not know about your personal life, and what you do besides crime, but the only ‘you’ I know, is the one who values evil above all else, so I can’t comprehend why you are doing all of this.’’
Black Hat looked taken aback, but only for a moment. Then, he stood.
‘’I do not care for the creatures of this planet; I know I’ve made that very clear throughout the years. When I heard about soulmates for the very first time, I did believe, that even if I ended up with having a soulmate, I would never care for this person. But this whole ‘soulmate’-business isn’t just some weird thing that keeps us connected. We are apparently each others ‘perfect match’. So, to answer your question; what I want, is to know you. You’re just a human, like any other, and yet, you have something that makes you my perfect match, and me yours. You could say, that I am curious, to see where this thing goes. Are you not feeling the same?’’
You couldn’t say that you didn’t. If he was your soulmate, that meant that somewhere, deep deep down in his soul (if he had one) there must be something good, or at least something that resembled it. You could reject him, and go back to living a normal life (if he doesn’t become enraged), or you could sate your curiosity, and let this play out.
You wanted to make the choice, but it was hard to think when he was looking at you while saying nothing, expecting an answer. When he received none, he shrugged his shoulders, and turned his back to you.
‘’I’ll give you some time to think. We’ll see each other again soon.’’
And then, he was gone. He had vanished into the darkness, and you were alone once again. You were so glad that you had the day off tomorrow.
As Black Hat stepped out of the shadows, he noticed that the lights were out, his subordinates most likely already in bed. All but one, it seemed.
‘’Black Hat, a costumer has demanded to speak with you. It’s the one who commissioned the attack on the bank.’’ Dr. Flug let him know. It was late, and he looked exhausted. He had probably stayed up to catch Black Hat when he returned to the manor. Black Hat didn’t really want to do anything but retire to his office for the night, but it would be easier to just get it over with.
‘Bring him to my office’’

Light In The Darkness - 4
Soulmates had the ability to make one’s life both better and worse. Those, who did end up with their soulmate, were promised a happy forever after, but you weren’t so sure if the same could be said for you, considering your soulmate was the most powerful and dangerous eldritch being on the whole planet. He had conquered the world several times before, just for fun. He reigned supreme and even the most feared villains stayed out of his path. You had always dreamed of meeting your soulmate, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Chapter 4 - Choices
It had been a month since the destruction of the Nation Bank System. The first couple of weeks had been busy, looking for jobs and being basically interrogated, by everyone you knew, about the attack. Every time you tried to return to normal life, someone had to ask you about it, making it impossible to forget the moment that sealed your fate as Black Hat’s soulmate. You were his soulmate whether or not you met him, but had it not been for that meeting, neither of you would have known about it.
It had been a month. A whole month of silence. Besides having had to use your days finding a job, with help from IVO, everything was as usual. However, it was impossible to relax. Black Hat’s last words still rung in your head; ‘’This isn’t the last you’ll see of me, my little light’’.
You had figured that he would maybe show up a week later, or something, but it had been a whole month now and you had seen nothing, and you were growing more and more anxious with each passing day.
‘’(y/n)? You still with us?’’
You blinked at the hand being waved in front of your face; ‘’Hu-h, what, what?’’ you stumbled on your own words, as your new colleague put their hand down. ‘’You seriously can’t keep spacing out like that! Otherwise the boss is going to notice sooner or later. I know, that you’ve insisted that you haven’t been affected by the attack several times, but I personally think that you should consider I.V.O’s offer. They’ve had lots of cases like yours, you know. It would probably do you good, even if you haven’t suffered anything serious.’’
Perhaps they were right. I.V.O had helped you get a new job, but still wanted to be on the lookout for any mental or physical damage from the attack that hadn’t been discovered yet. You had agreed to let them check up on your health for the next 2-3 months, where you could agree to see an organization-assigned therapist with economical support from them. You still didn’t feel like you needed to get therapy, but perhaps it would do you good to talk to someone about it. Just not the soulmate part. There was no way in hell that you would ever tell anybody about that!
Picking up you phone, you dialed the number, and waited for it to go through.
‘’Yes, hello, Grutio, I wanted to know if we could talk sometime?’’
Meanwhile, elsewhere, a tall and dark figure looked upon the city, through the redly tinted window of his mansion.
He had ruled the world – no, he had merely ruled the species that populated it – yet he had absolutely no power that could change this outcome. He could kill his soulmate, sure, but it would never change the fact that at one point, there had existed someone, who was connected to him, no matter what he or they did.
Did he want to kill his soulmate? The very first time he had been introduced to the concept, it had seemed like the natural thing to do. He had no place in his life for something as silly as love. Once, there were two people that he chased around, simply for a bit of fun, and when he had finally cornered them, one of them had gotten on their knees and begged. Begged for his soulmate to be spared. A stupid request, yet he had decided to allow it. Whether it was an unprecedented act of mercy, or another form of torture didn’t matter. When he was done, he watched, as the soulmate wept and wept, tugging and shaking the corpse, as a pitiful attempt to bring their other soul back.
Back then a soulmate would have been nothing but an annoyance to him. And yet, as the millenniums had passed by, he could not help but wonder; what would his soulmate be like? Did he even have one? He had toyed with the idea as time progressed, and had caught himself daydreaming about how he would like to greet his other soul, should they ever meet.
A crash out in the hallway brought his attention back to the present. Nothing serious, it was only those imbeciles running amok, for whatever unknown reason.
Just as he was getting ready to let those fools know that he demanded silence, the door to his private office was bust open. There stood Demencia, her breathing ragged, her clothes slightly torn and a faceplanting Flug was holding onto her leg with the last of his strength, trying desperatly to drag her out of the room.
‘’I’m sorry sir, I couldn’t stop her…-‘’
‘’DARLING! Is it true that you have a SOULMATE?’’ Demencia yelled. Black Hat instinctively barred his sharp teeth slightly, already fed up with their presence.
‘’Daaarling, why aren’t you answering meee?’’ she asked, as she brought up her hands to her face, trying to make herself seem cute or attractive or something. He wasn’t entirely sure if she was just trying to flirt as usual, or if this was just another tic triggered by a hidden anger.
‘’Demencia, please get out. If you stop talking now, I’ll let you wreck my lab just once, without putting you in containment again, if you just…-‘’ He was interrupted by a punch to the face from Demencia. They both flinched when Black Hat’s gravely voice was heard; ‘’Why must she not speak, Flug?’’ He looked at the scientist, who tried to make himself smaller. ‘’You wouldn’t happen to have told her anything, that she shouldn’t know, would you?’’
‘’Uuh, I might have- but it was not about that, I swear! It was more of like a sidenote, that obviously wasn’t important to the story, but then she got fixated on it and…-‘’
‘’Enough.’’
The room became quiet.
‘’Demencia.’’ The girl looked glad, yet horrified to have his attention, ‘’Get out.’’
After saying her ‘sweet’ goodbyes, she latched onto the wall and crawled out of the office, leaving Flug alone with Black Hat. His paperbag was getting damp, and he was still hunched, cowering before his boss, who appeared oddly calm.
‘’Now, Flug.’’ He twitched. ‘’I’ll overlook this incident, but if you tell her another word without my permission, you know what will happen.’’ He walked around his desk and sat in his chair. ‘’Tell me what you know about soulmates.’’
‘’Soulmates, sir? I can’t say much from a scientific point of view, soulmates are still a mystery in that aspect, but as far as we know, soulmates are believed to have been around just as long as humanity has. There is no saying whether it, this phenomenon, came into existence after humanity came into being, or if it somehow has always been around. Nevertheless, we still don’t know exactly what makes soulmates soulmates.’’ His hand came to where his mouth should be, his goggles showing an absent look in his eye, as he often had when he was recalling and explaining information. ‘’Seeing as people can easily fall in love with someone who isn’t their soulmate, it means that soulmates aren’t necessarily meant to end up together. Many have theorized that being one’s soulmate simply means being one’s perfect match. If the conditions allow it, and they do end up together, the chances of them breaking apart due to a bad relationship is pretty much zero. Several researches have been conducted, and they all show the same tendency; if no mental, economical, cultural - and so on – problems are present, it is almost unheard of, for a couple of soulmates to leave each other…’’
‘’Enough about the science and statistics, Flug.’’ Black Hat tapped his fingers on the table, letting the doctor know, that his patience was being worn thin.
‘’R-r-right, of course! The most basic things to know about soulmates are these; When soulmates are within a small distance of each other, their chests will begin to emit a bright light, that will get even brighter, the closer they are to each other. Secondly, the light does not stay forever. When the couple shares their first kiss, the light disappears, and does not ever come back.’’
Black Hat waited for Flug to continue; yet he did not. ‘’Is that all?’’
‘’Yes sir. That’s all we know about soulmates as of now.’’
He raised a gloved hand to rub his temple. He didn’t know what he had expected. Perhaps he was looking for an explanation. How did he of all things, get to have a soulmate? What made them fit to be his other soul? How should he proceed with them?
‘’Boss, if I may, I suggest that you try talking to your soulmate, if you are curious about them.’’
The hand on his temple was lowered, allowing him to look at the doctor in front of him, who once again had reverted to his anxious state. Black Hat didn’t comment on his suggestion.
‘’Bring me the parasite flower.’’
‘’The Dapura Repulsa flower? Why would you want that, sir?’’
The room got dark, the shadows writhing on the walls and the floor, and the light coming through the red window dimmed. The doctor instantly got the hint, and quickly ran off to his lab to fetch the flower.
Black Hat watched the parasite flower, inside the metal and glass container that was seated on his desk, its eye trained on him. He was clearly its chosen target, and that was fine by him. He had an experiment to conduct after all.
Smashing the brittle – well, it was brittle for him – container, he grabbed ahold of the flower, as it struggled to wrestle itself free and make its way to his chest, where his heart would be, if he had one. During a filming of an orientation video, a flower just like this one had landed on his chest, after having attacked his useless underlings. Attached this his underlings, the flower had been able to turn their affection into disgust, by attaching itself to their heart and manipulating it, but in his case, it had simply died after a short period, as he had no heart for it to cling to. The same thing was likely to happen now, but he was willing to try, if only to see if anything had changed somehow. He let go of the flower, and watched it, as it crawled up his arm, to sit on his chest. When the purple flower’s tendrils had snuck under his clothes and drilled their way into his chest, he waited patiently for a reaction.
Nothing happened.
He felt just as confused as the flower looked, its single yellow eye conveying a look of confusion. It was still alive. Even though the flower had no effect on him, just like last time, it didn’t die either. He plucked the flower off his chest, and let it drop to the floor. It cast him a single gaze, confused about the experience, before scampering out the door to look for a new target. He’d let the idiots deal with it.
The experiment hadn’t given him any answers.
But there was something. Something that had changed in him.
Perhaps Flug’s idea was worth a try.
