It’s always strange how the most opposite of people end up in the most similar of situations. You and Yangyang couldn’t be more different as people, yet the world seemed to force the two of you together. Almost like fate itself wanted to see how the story would unfold.
At the time, Yangyang was doing incredibly well for himself. In the past two years he had fought from the shadows, only to emerge as one of the most successful rappers of his generation. In those years he released two exceptionally successful albums, in which all singles had reached number one on the billboard top 100. He had just come off a rambunctious world tour in which he had partied in places regular people could only dream about, so to put it bluntly, it had all gone to his head a little.
What used to be a hard-working humble guy, indebted to those who had supported him when he could barely pay his rent, was now a boastful asshole who liked to belittle other people for fun. He spent most of his free time buying flashy items to show off on social media and wooing a large spread of people.
In fact, that was currently where he was going. A couple of nights ago, Yangyang had met a pretty irresistible woman and had a wonderful night of fun with her. That morning she left with his number, and had invited him over to hers for a repeat of that night. The only problem was, she lived on the other side of the country, in a town without an airport.
So, doing what any sane man would do, he got into one of his several flashy sports cars and began driving to her house. He passed through the bustling city of Seoul, with its skyscrapers and lights, to an ambling and deserted countryside. For what seemed like miles, there was only grass, and then it turned to forest. It was a good thing that he wasn’t stopping here because he would definitely get lost.
Except that was exactly what was about to happen. Averting his gaze from the view to the inside of his car, he realised that he was low on diesel. He could only hope to power through, and somehow reach a petrol station, but if not he would definitely need to call someone. Then again, could he really give them directions when he had no idea where he actually was?
He carried on driving until the car slowed till it stopped, sputtering in disbelief. He swore he had filled up the tank this morning, but then again he couldn’t be so sure, he had been in a hurry. He pulled out his phone, no signal. Opening the door, and locking it behind him, he began waving it around in the air, hoping for anything, but was only left with the cold breeze wrapping around his ankles.
With no other way, he began walking down the road, with any luck he could hitchhike a ride to the nearest city, but if that wasn’t an option, he needed to find some other signs of life. It took him two hours of walking to get to the small cottage where you resided, and he wasn’t about to get a warm welcome.
Tumblr media
Your life had always been a stark contrast to the rappers, whilst he thrived in the attention of others, you struggled. It wasn’t that you didn’t like people (well not some people), you would just rather spend your time alone. It was much more productive that way, and you did meet up with your friends and family a couple of times a month. In reality, you had become somewhat of a recluse.
That was why it was such a surprise when a knock sounded at your door, after all, living in the middle of nowhere was built for you to get no disturbances. Sure, every so often you had some lost foreigners, or maybe someone in need of directions, but that was often few and far between. Also, they usually weren’t this persistent, the banging on the door was almost desperate.
You let out a huff, before storming to the door and ripping it open, leaving the man puzzled mid-knock.
“Can I help you?” You weren’t being helpful, there was pure frustration dripping from the question.
“Order me a tow truck.” He demanded.
“I’m sorry,” You say, slightly stunned that he would be this rude when asking for help.
“Don’t you know who I am? I have better places to be than here. If you can’t call a tow truck, you’ll be fixing it yourself.” The entitlement poured out of him.
Now that he had mentioned it, he did look familiar, like a rapper that you liked, but you weren’t going to let him know that. Especially if it was going to stroke his already massive ego.
“I have no idea who you are, and if you’re going to talk to me like that, I’m not helping you at all.”
“Do you live under a rock, or do you lack good taste? Either way, if you don’t help me now, you’ll be in a lot of legal trouble later.”
“Oh yeah, how’s that going to work? How are you going to contact anyone without my help?” You smirked, going to close your door, before his foot in it. His eyes were wild, suddenly realising that you were his only hope.
“Look… I do really need to call someone. It would cause a lot of publicity if I went missing.”
You sigh, he wasn’t wrong, people could think he had been kidnapped or something else out of pocket. Still, you didn’t want this entitled brat to think he deserved any of your respect. So you were doing this the hard way.
“If you want any of my help, you better shut the fuck up and listen. If there is, even so, much of a complaint that comes out of that mouth, there is no chance I will help you. Understood.” You say sternly.
“Understood.” He says, recovering from the shock.
“Good. Now show me where this car is.”
Tumblr media
Seeing that eyesore of a sportscar did not brighten your mood whatsoever, it was completely drained of fuel. Luckily for you, you placed orders for your fuel, mainly because the nearest petrol station would actually use all your fuel to get there. Despite his promise to stay quiet, Yanyang hadn’t stopped whinging, claiming that the fact that people lived like this was insane.
“It might be insane to you, because you have a phone addiction. You’ve checked it ten times since you’ve entered my house.”
“It’s not my fault you live like you’re still in the 1920s. I bet you don’t even have a phone, I won’t even be able to charge mine.” He sulked.
“I have a phone, I just don’t feel the need to use it every second.”
“I need to get home.”
“And with no signal, you have no way to contact anybody. You’re lucky I’m letting you stay here until the fuel delivery comes.” You weren’t a monster, despite the fact that you were moments away from pushing him out of your second-story window.
“I could do with some relaxation.”
You scoffed, he thought he’d be relaxing. “There’ll be no relaxing if you’re staying here. You’ll be earning your keep.” After all, living as a recluse meant that you were self-sustainable, only ordering some freezable food every month.
You essentially had a little farm, with some sheep and cows, and a modest garden. That meant it needed upkeep, and whilst you did treat yourself to a lie-in during the weekend, you were up at 7 am every weekday.
“What?” Once again, he seemed shocked that he had to do anything he didn’t want to.
“You’ll be up bright and early, helping me keep this place running. It’s either this or you try and hitchhike your way to the next town with a signal, and I’m sorry to break it to you but that’s unlikely. And it’s a ten-hour walk alternatively.
He was quiet for a second, seemingly weighing up his options, until he finally came to an unfortunate conclusion. “Alright, I’ll do it. It can’t be too hard. Better than dying trying to escape.” Seems like he was also overdramatic. Great. This wasn’t going to be annoying at all.
At least you’d have some extra help, right?
Right.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you wake up and begin your chores, you bang on the guest room door and urge Yangyang to get up as well. One hour later, there is still no noise or sounds of movement coming from the room. You sigh, looks like you were going to do this yourself.
After doing your morning’s worth of chores, you sit in the kitchen indulging in your lunch. Only then, does Yangyang walk in, rubbing his eyes and with terrible bed hair. He doesn’t acknowledge you, beelining towards a chair where he then proceeds to try and access his phone. He curses at the lack of signal.
“What’s for lunch?” He asks, without looking up from his phone.
Ignoring his question, you get straight to the point. “Where were you this morning? I told you that you’d have to work if you stay here, I’m not a  bed and breakfast.”
He chuckles to himself, almost in disbelief, “I didn’t think you were being serious, I don’t do this sort of thing. I have people to do this for me.” His voice dripped with entitlement.
“I am not your ‘people.’ I am spending money looking after you here. I am giving you free petrol, which costs quite a lot nowadays. The least you could do is help around the place.”
“If you need money, I’ll give you money at the end. It’s not like I’m short of it.”
“That’s not the point, Yangyang. The point is that you said you’d help, and then lied to me.”
“Oh, get over it. So what, you can’t just kick me out, and I’m not going to work for you for free.”
You let out a bout of sarcastic laughter. “So you’re happy to take what you want from me, but then you’ll give nothing else in return. How selfish can you fucking be?”
“I don’t really care about your opinion, you’re some freak who lives in the middle of nowhere.”
“Yeah and this freak offered you their home, free of charge.”
He just shrugs, opening your cupboards and rummaging through them for food. That was the last straw. You charged upstairs, entering the guest room where Yangyang’s suitcase remained unpacked. You pick it up, before storming downstairs and throwing it out the door.
Having heard the commotion, Yanyang follows you outside. “Are you fucking insane?
“Leave. I don’t want you here anymore, you’re not worth the stress. I live alone to relax.”
“You can’t just kick me out!”
“Try me. Don’t come back until you’ve sorted out your attitude.”
And with that, you slam your door behind you, bolting it shut.
Tumblr media
It takes a while for you to get to sleep that night, with you stewing with rage in your room for hours before you finally dropped off. However, you weren’t the person up the latest that night, Yangyang’s car (no matter how expensive it was) was not a good substitute for a bed. The fact that it had been pushed into your drive made it all more taunting for him.
However, for what felt like years, he was finally alone. With the rapid rising success of his career, he hadn’t really had much time to sit and think about his actions. He went to bed thinking about music, and woke up thinking about music. To put it simply, this was one of the first times his mind had wandered away from that topic in two years.
This was mainly why he had gotten so entitled, this distance had also meant he’d hardly really thought of his family, and in connection, the values his family taught him. The long he led in his car, the more his mind wandered, until it fell onto one topic. You.
You were infuriating. You didn’t seem to care about his fame at all, you seemed to want to work him to the bone, and just needed a pawn to do it. But when he stripped all that away, he realised that you had been quite selfless, lending help free of charge, and somewhere to sleep. Even the fact that you didn’t know who he was, was no longer an issue. Now that he thought about it, it had been quite refreshing being surrounded by a person who didn’t constantly kiss his ass. It really gave him something to think about.
The more he looked back on his actions, the guiltier he felt, realising how much distress he had put you under, especially when you didn’t have to help him. He wondered how he could apologise, but it wasn’t like you would care about a signed album. Except there was one thing you cared about, getting all your work done.
The lights were off, you were asleep. Was there a chance that he could possibly sneak in? Exiting his car, he looks for a spare key and eventually finds it under a plant pot. Looks like he was going to do some of your chores until he fell asleep, it’s not like he was going to anyway. Luckily for him, you were quite a heavy sleeper, so he had all the time in the world to get it done.
The next morning you wake up to the sound of a pan sizzling downstairs. You were worried and confused, had you forgotten to turn off the stove last night? But then the aroma of food frying quickly told you that there was someone else in the house. Yangyang. How had he gotten in? Had he found your spare key? You didn’t know why you kept it out there anyway.
Trudging downstairs, you were ready for a barrage of demands, but instead, you were greeted with a cheery ‘good morning’. You were startled.
“Who are you?” You half-joke, genuinely confused as to why he was acting this way.
“I’m sorry. I had some time to think, and I realised that I’ve been really shitty. I promise to come at this from a different attitude. Please just don’t make me sleep in that car.” He pleaded, “I made food.” He shoves a bowl of stir-fried rice in front of you.
Seeing that he put so much effort in, you had to admit that there was some sense that he was serious about this. You relented.
“Fine, but if you suddenly change this attitude, there are no more chances. Now let’s see how you cope with these chores.”
Tumblr media
The next week is bliss (if you call slaving all-day together bliss), and soon it’s only five days before the petrol arrives. You got so much stuff done, you could focus on some of your books (your tbr being embarrassingly long), and even managed to get around to doing some of your renovating. Your storage room finally getting painted.
Beneath all the entitlement that covered him before, Yangyang was just a cute guy with a goofy sense of humour and a penchant for trouble. He was deceptively quite a hard worker, which made sense granted his career in music. You didn’t really expect him to be this way, then again you hadn’t really known him before.
“We’re down to our last tub of paint,” Yangyang grunted, hauling in the heavy tub. You had chosen a light cream colour and had taped tarpaulin over the floor. So far it had been quite a messy occasion.
“Just be careful when you’re pouring it onto the tray. It’s heavy and I don’t want you to spill it all over the floor.”
“Yes, boss!” He salutes you mockingly.
“Don’t act like you aren’t super clumsy. You’ve dropped and broken three plates since you’ve been here.” You playfully chastise him.
“It’s not my fault that they don’t like me.” He pouts.
“The plates aren’t people, Yang.”
“How do you know that?”
“Doesn’t it make it more sadistic, of they are? You essentially killed them with your logic.”
“Okay, I take it back. I’m too young to be a murderer.”
You eyed him as he poured the paint into the tray, you could see his grip slipping as he struggled to hold on with his clammy hands. Three. Two. One. SMASH! The tub clattered into the tray, springing it up and essentially all over you. You spluttered in surprise.
“Sorry,” Yangyang calls apologetically, before turning and seeing your grumpy expression and cracking up.
“You don’t seem so sorry.”
“You just look like a grumpy reverse-dalmatian.”
You raised your eyebrow at him.
“What it’s a compliment, dalmatians are cute.”
You blush at the mention of that word. It seemed innocent enough, but you couldn’t help but think that it was too sweet to be an offhanded compliment. You were probably just confused, you hadn’t really spent an extended time period with a man in months, obviously, that was the only reason you were attracted to him. It’s not like it would lead to anything anyway, he was leaving in five days.
This was just some silly phase, you’d get over him soon enough.
Tumblr media
It’s the final night before Yangyang leaves, and for the first time in your life, you were sad that a visitor was leaving. Despite your rocky start, Yangyang could be a really nice guy when he wanted to be, and honestly, you’d miss the company. It’s been a while since you’d hung around with someone, and maybe this was a sign to hang around with your friends more often. This didn’t mean that you didn’t enjoy your solitude, however, it was less complicated.
To celebrate his last night, you had brought out two bottles of wine, that you hadn’t drank for over a year, ready to let loose for the first time in a while. Yangyang wasn’t much of a wine drinker but he wasn’t the type of guy to say no to free alcohol either, so there the two of you were giggling like teenagers having drunk a full bottle of wine.
Now onto the second one, you were getting a little more than tipsy.
“Tell me something I don’t know about you.” You started, taking a long sip of your newly poured glass.
“Uhh… Okay. Just let me think of something.” His face twists into a thoughtful gaze, and you internally squeal at the cuteness. “Uhm, I actually play the violin, that’s something you don’t know.”
“Wait, like are you good?” You were extremely blunt when drunk.
He chuckled, “I’d like to think so, I have been playing for quite a while. Though not very recently.”
“You should start doing it again, it’d be cool to hear violin in some of your music.”
“I thought you’d never heard any of my music.” Shit. You were busted.
“Well, I might not have told you the entire truth. I may have… listened to both of your albums.” You admit, bashfully.
“Wait you’re a fan. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well, when I met you, your ego wasn’t the smallest. Didn’t want to add to that.”
“What’s your favourite song of mine?” He was getting a little giddy (it was probably the wine).
“Oh, undoubtedly Leonidas. You did a really good job with it.”
“Not what I was expecting… but thank you.”
“I imagine that’s what you’re going to be doing, once you get out. Writing your music.”
“Well, this whole experience has given me a lot to write about.”
“That doesn’t mean you’re going to write about me, does it?”
“Well, maybe, you’re a pretty unforgettable person, Y/N.”
“Oh.” You went quiet, you weren’t expecting that. Tension had risen, so thick that you could cut it with a knife. There was only one thing you could do to break it, so you downed your full glass of wine for courage. Then you kissed him.
It was short, just a peck, and you immediately regretted it. Pulling back and covering your face in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry,” You ramble, “I should have asked you. You probably don’t even like me, that was an awful mistake-.”
“Y/N.” He interrupts the long-winded paragraph you were about to say. You turn to him, he gently cups your face and kisses you. His lips were gentle against yours, his fingers playing with your hands and lacing them together.
Finally pulling away, you grinned, slightly flustered.
“I like you too.” He grinned back.
You both leaned in again, the alcohol fuelling your interaction. Soon you were straddling his waist, the wine long forgotten. Your fingers threaded through his hair (which was surprisingly soft given how much he dyed it). The kisses had gotten a lot deeper, and soon Yanyang’s hands begin fiddling with the buttons on your top. You both momentarily stop.
“Are you sure about this?” He asks, eyebrows furrowed.
“Very sure.” You say, pulling off your shirt.
Soon the two of you are pulling off various articles of clothing, before disappearing into your room, only to be seen the next morning.
Tumblr media
Yangyang woke up before you, at around 6 am, to a knocking on the door. You were fast asleep, clinging onto him from behind. He smiled, before untangling from you and putting on some shorts to answer the door. Being a heavy sleeper, you merely grumbled before falling back asleep.
Answering the door, it was a man delivering the petrol, Yangyang signed for it and placed it in the hallway. He needed something to drink. Making his way into the kitchen, Yanyang got himself a glass of water before sitting down at the table. Then it hit him, what the hell had he done?
He had slept with you, that wasn’t part of the plan. The plan was to leave and never see you again, after getting his petrol. He couldn’t be in a relationship, what about his career? Why did you have to be so wonderful? Why couldn’t he just resist you for a little bit longer?
So he stuck to his plan, he took the canister of petrol, poured it into his car, grabbed his bags, and drove off not looking back. It was about three hours before he finally got service, immediately called his manager.
“Yangyang, how’s my main man! How was your week, eventful?” Yangyang could practically hear him smirking.
“It was fine. I’m coming back now. Working on my new music.”
“Sounds great, we’ll be rolling in the big bucks as soon as you get back.”
Then he realised what he was doing. He was driving back to a group of kiss-asses that used him for money, and leaving a person who grounded him and cared about him behind. What had he been thinking, sure he loved his music, but it was stressful working with them. He could make music anywhere.
He thought back to the song you mentioned, it was the only song he had sole credits on, that couldn’t be a coincidence, could it? He had to go back to you, he had to know the answers, he had to know what you could be. But he didn’t know it would be too late.
You woke up an hour before he returned, feeling the emptiness beside you. You had an awful hangover, and it wasn’t made easier by Yangyang’s departure. To put it simply, you were crushed. One of the only men you’d opened up to in a while, only to run away as soon as you become intimate. You felt used.
You had heard stories, of him sleeping around. But you didn’t know the lengths he would take, was all of this just an act to get with you before going? All you knew was that he wanted nothing to do with you, so you wanted nothing to do with him. So you got on with your day, repressing the disappointment as though nothing happened.
You get a knock on the door, an hour later. It was him.
“What do you want, Yangyang?” You were immediately hostile.
“I’m sorry I left, I shouldn’t have.”
“I think you made your choice when you packed up all your stuff whilst I was asleep. I can’t believe I trusted you. I’m such an idiot.”
“Y/N, can we please just talk? I can explain everything.”
“What is there to explain? You slept with me and then ran off. I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. Just go. I don’t want to see you again.”
“Y/N, please, just listen to me.”
Without giving him a word, you slam and bolt your door. There was no way he was getting in, you had your spare key. You didn’t want to talk to him now. In fact, you couldn’t think of a time when you wanted to talk to him. You were better off without him.
Tumblr media
Yangyang had almost given up, but he knew you wouldn’t warm up to him all of a sudden. So he devised his time thinking of ways to get you back. So far, he had deemed them all failures, with flowers and money not seeming like the right way to persuade you that he regretted his actions. All he had to do, was convince you that the night you shared together meant something important to him too. Except how was he supposed to convince you?
He spent days thinking about it, until he finally realises what he should be doing. He still hadn’t released a new single, wallowing in self-pity, and you were a fan of his music. You were a fan of his music, surely, even if you were mad at him, you would still listen to his new releases. So he knew what he had to do, he had to write a song about you.
It wasn’t hard, to write lyrics about you. It came easily to him, and he finished the lyrics within an hour. When it came to composing the song, it took longer, but he made sure to include the violins that you had mentioned, eventually creating a chill r&b rap song all about you. He was proud of it, the second song he had made all by himself.
Once it had been refined he released it, hoping that you’d hear it and give him some sort of sign, any sign that you’d be open to forgiving him. That you’d realise how much you truly meant to him and welcome him back into your life.
You hesitated for a few days before listening to the song. Part of you wanted to forget him entirely, but you finally gave in and decided to listen. Maybe this song was the push you needed to get over him. Boy were you wrong.
By the end of the song, you were in tears. It wasn’t the pretty cinematic kind either, it was full-on, puffy eyes, snot running down your face tears. You didn’t know what to think. You were happy, that he had written about you, with obvious references to wine, and the inclusion of the violin. But there was also this more cynical part to you, that believed that he was just teasing you, and that this song wasn’t necessarily about you. He doesn’t mention you by name. So you leave it. He would forget that his visit ever happened in a few months, anyway.
Tumblr media
Yangyang waits a month to give him some sort of sign, any sort of hint that you understand. But it’s radio silence. The song does incredibly well, charting number one on most platforms and having records for the number of streams within the first week of release. Yet he couldn’t care less about that, all he could care about was your reaction to it. And so was the rest of the world, every tabloid was raving about the mysterious individual who inspired the song. Everyone wanted to know who you were.
After two weeks, he became impatient. So he did the most irrational thing he could think of, he drove all the way to your house in the middle of nowhere again. In fact, it was such a spontaneous decision that he forgot to fill up his petrol tank, and when he arrived, he realised that he didn’t have enough petrol to get back to the city. He hoped you forgave him, because if not, he was in for a long week.
Clambering out of his car, his hands began to clam up as he reached the front door. But he couldn’t give up now, not when he had driven all this way. Hesitating a little, he finally knocked.
You were surprised to see him, when you answered, your eyes widening a little when you saw him. You no longer looked angry, just a little sad. He hoped this meant that you could be easily persuaded.
“Hello, Yangyang.” You sighed softly.
“I wrote a song about you. Did you listen to it?” He was upfront, he could have you turning him away again.
“I did, though I wasn’t sure if it was about me or not.” You admitted quietly.
“Who else could it be about? All I could think about when I went home was you.”
You sighed again, deeply. “Yanyyang, you should just stop. Even if I took you back, do you really think that this relationship would work? I live in the middle of nowhere, it’s not like we can see each other often.”
“So what? I drove here easily enough. I can do it again. I’m not going to let something as stupid as distance end us.”
“I’m being realistic, Yangyang.”
“So don’t be. Being realistic is boring, can we not just enjoy our time together? I like spending time with you, it makes me feel a lot freer than when I’m at home.”
You buckled under his sweet words, maybe he was being sincere. And if he was willing to give it a shot, why should you? So what if it was against the odds, you needed some spice in your life.
“Ok, you’ve got one last chance. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Warn me all you like, I’m going to ignore it. You’re worth travelling the distance.”

A/N Sorry I’ve been inactive again. My job has been taking a lot out of me, and I haven’t been feeling best mental health wise. Luckily I’m feeling a little better and I’m hoping to become more consistent :). This is the start of a new sereis, let me know how it goes.

School for you had always been fairly straightforward, go to class, hang around with your friends at lunch, go to your respective clubs after school, then go home. It was a routine that you had gotten extremely familiar with, and that wasn’t about to change any time soon.
Your two best friends, Rose and Jennie, had been by your side since you were about seven, and the three of you were just about inseparable. Despite the fact that the two of them had a significantly higher social standing, and were miles above you on the confidence scale; you were happy to think that you grounded them back into reality. Plus it didn’t hurt that no one was looking at you, you could rock up to school in a banana suit and no one would even notice with your besties by your side.
Most school days were the same, avoid the annoying Queen Bee of the school, Luna, avoid your annoying player neighbour, Jeongin, and gaze at Seungmin, whilst trying to form a cohesive sentence. Then during breaks, you would spend your time writing for the school’s newspaper, something you were pretty good at. You had school down to a science, which was good because you got A’s in those subjects.
Today was like no other day, Rose and Jennie were invited to a party, with you as part of their package deal, and you had finally gotten to your locker for a moment of peace. You were a little put off by the entire conversation, with Luna acting like you weren’t even there, and treating you like shit when she finally acknowledged your existence.
You were grabbing your books for your next Spanish class, when he approached you, Jeongin. You groaned internally, his cocky smirk defeating any happiness you had. You had known Jeongin since you were a baby. You were next-door neighbours, which meant that the two of you had grown up together. Despite this, the two of you really didn’t get along, with the two of you having completely different interests. Also, he was dating Luna
“Hey, Y/N.” He grinned at you, you rolled your eyes.
“And for what reason am I graced with your presence?” You ask sarcastically.
“Just wanted to ask what film you were watching last night? Looked pretty freaky.” You had been watching the latest zombie film to come out, it was pretty freaky, but that’s besides the point.
“Were you spying on me?” You ask incredulously.
“It’s hard to miss a bunch of people running and screaming for their lives.”
You shake your head, grabbing your books, and closing your locker.
“Goodbye, Jeongin.” You say, huffing as you pass him. Hopefully, you could avoid him for the rest of the day.
Tumblr media
The next two days at school passed fast, until its finally the day of the party. For some reason, Luna had decided to have the party on a school night, and Jennie and Rose were way too excited about it. The two of them had spent an hour at your house, giggling whilst trying to get you to dress up. This was Luna you were talking about, there was no way you were dressing up for her.
There was a nagging feeling in your head that maybe Seungmin would be there, but you didn’t want to get your hopes up. You were pretty sure he didn’t know you existed, and you didn’t want to put any effort just for your hopes to be crushed even lower than they already were. So naturally, you pull out your usual go-to party t-shirt and up the ante on the complaining.
“Come on, Y/N! This could be your chance to wow Seungmin!” Rose giggles like a little school girl.
“Yeah, he wouldn’t be able to take your eyes off you in something like this.” Jennie flashes something covered in brightly coloured sequins. That was not your style one bit, as much as they wanted it to be.
After talking them down, you make it to the party whilst it’s in full swing, separating with Jennie and Rose who make a beeline for the dance floor (somewhere you definitely avoid). You spot a glimpse of Seungmin, sitting with his guitar (and crowded by his adoring fans), there was no way you were grabbing his attention tonight.
Not paying much attention, you turn around and run into Luna.
“Watch where you’re going!” She growls, and not wanting to get into an argument tonight, you mutter a sorry and try to evacuate.
“You think you can just show up here and ruin my night!” She scowls.
“I haven’t even done anything, Luna.”
“Your presence alone ruins everything.”
“Ouch,” You say sarcastically. “Whilst I would love to stay and hear your creative insults, I have somewhere else to be.”
Ducking behind someone, you make your escape, hearing her huff in frustration. Making your way inside, you head towards the snack table. The house itself was like a glass maze, but it was worth it for the food. As much as you disliked Luna, you could agree that she had good taste in food, the spread was extravagant- not what you would expect at a high school party.
“Enjoying the food, Y/N.” Jeongin’s voice jumped in from behind you. You startled, almost dropping your glass of punch, but standing your ground.
“It was much better company than you.”
“Oh, I’m hurt. I have to say though, you’re usually in much better company. Where are Jennie and Rose at?”
“Already planning to cheat on Luna?”
“We broke up,”
“Again?” It was the third time this month.”
“Well, as a DUFF, you wouldn’t understand your friends being wanted.”
“I’m sorry??? Of course, I understand why my friends are so popular, they’re wonderful people. And what do you mean a DUFF? What the hell is that Jeongin!” Your voice was muddled with confusion and incredulity.
“A DUFF. Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Doesn’t mean your any of those things, just that in comparison to your friends, you’re less attractive and more approachable.”
You could not believe this, the fact that he had just openly insulted you. And he didn’t seem the least bit sorry, the same cocky grin smeared across his face. To put it simply, he infuriated you. How dare he say that to you! Sure you weren’t as conventionally attractive as Jennie and Rose but you had your own charms. How dare he dismiss that.
In your rage, you could only think to do one thing in return. Picking up a solo cup full of cheap beer, you fling it in his face. “Fuck you, Jeongin.” You mutter before storming off. You needed to get away from this party more than ever.
Tumblr media
Over the next two weeks that one acronym floated across your mind, lingering like a bad smell that you were desperate to get rid of. It was beginning to affect every thought you had, and every interaction you had with your two friends.
What used to feel like a blessing, felt more like a curse. Why were you completely ignored compared to them, why did you constantly have people coming up to you and asking if they were single? Why was no one coming up to you and asking you if you were single? Then your mind began turning to other, more dangerous thoughts.
Were they using you, as some sort of doorman? Were you just there to make them seem more kind and approachable, that they look better to be associated with someone of a lower social status? You hoped it wasn’t true, that these years of friendship had been genuine, but you weren’t in the right state of mind to be making reasonable judgements right now.
So there you were, silently stewing away whilst your two friends were attempting to engage you in some form of interesting conversation. But you had just had it.
“Do you think I’m stupid?!” You snapped.
“Y/N, why the hell would you think that?” Jennie was taken aback.
“We’ve known you for so long, we obviously don’t.” Rose in comparison was confused.
This contradiction only sparked your anger further. You almost went into a blind rage.
“I’ve had enough of you both using me. I don’t need you or want either of you anymore. My eyes have been opened to how you used me you sickos!”
You began gathering your things, only for Jennie to pull you back down.
“Stop being ridiculous. What are you on about?”
“You know, and it’s been going on for way too long. We’re done. Don’t talk to me.”
And with that, you stormed out of the cafeteria, leaving two very confused girls behind you.
Tumblr media
It was definitely a different situation, being by yourself. You had never really experienced high school this way before, but your fears had been confirmed. You were completely invisible, now that the popularity that came with being friends with Jennie and Rose had gone. You didn’t get so much as a nod of acknowledgement in the halls anymore.
You began to wallow, this new unfamiliar predicament burying you. Until one day, an opportunity arose- willing you to dig yourself out of the hole of your self-pity and finally better yourself. You are not a DUFF, you will not allow yourself to be one.
This particular opportunity arose when you overheard your chemistry teacher talking to the person who had enlightened you. Jeongin.
“I’m sorry Jeongin, but I’ve talked to your coach and we’ve decided that it’s best you don’t play football until you can get your grades up.” Your chemistry teacher was solemn, unlike how you had seen him before.
“Are you sure there isn’t anything you can do? I promise I’ll get my grades up if you let me keep playing.” Jeongin pleaded.
“I’m sorry, but at the moment that isn’t possible.”
So you took your opportunity and pounced. Not long after, your chemistry teacher left the classroom, jeongin packing up his battered chemistry textbook. You entered the room again.
“Looks like you’ve gotten yourself into quite a pickle there, Jeongin.” You grinned, smugly.
“Look, if you’re here to gloat. There are places I’d rather be.” He huffed.
“Actually, I’ve come here with a deal. And if I were you, I’d take it.”
“What is this about, Y/N.”
“Remember when you called me a DUFF.”
“Are you still bringing that up? Look. If I knew you’d fixate on it so much, I wouldn’t have brought it up in the first place.”
“You basically called me ugly and fat, how else was I supposed to react?”
“Right, I’m going. See you later.
“Wait! I’ll tutor you. For chemistry.” You blurted out.
“I feel like there’s a catch to this.”
“I want you to de-duff me. There’s this guy I like, and I want to have a chance with him.”
“That’s it.”
“Yes, that’s it.”
“Well, you better hope that you’re a good teacher because I suck ass at chemistry. As for you, meet me at the mall after school. We’ll sort you out there.”
Tumblr media
The mall was an eventful trip, something that you didn’t really expect from him. You arrived there and were quickly moved into a popular retail store, where Jeongin scrutinised several different styles of clothing on you.
“What about this one?” You came out wearing a pink outfit.
“Definitely not, looks like something Luna would wear.” He grimaced.
“What, am I not a convincing copy? Do I not give off the vibe I might murder you any second?
“No. You don’t have the murderous glare she does. You look way too happy.”
“Pink is such a happy colour though.”
“Not when she wears it.”
“Right, I’ll try something that doesn’t give you nightmares, then.”
After your mostly unsuccessful shopping trip, he then took to the second step. Confidence, which seemingly involved you aimlessly wandering around the mall on the prowl for men. This was definitely not your thing, you’d love to be doing anything else right now.
“I want you to go up to that guy and get his number.”
“Are you serious, Jeongin?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?”
“No, you look like you’re enjoying this way too much.”
“Just go up and talk to him. Worst-case scenario: you get rejected, and you never see him again.” He shoved you in his direction, giving a maniacal smile. Maybe you shouldn’t have chosen him specifically.
You stumbled up to him, almost knocking him over.
“Hey… nice weather today?” You awkwardly stuttered out.
“Not really, it looks like it’s about to rain outside.” The man grumbled, clearly uninterested.
“I don’t know, the rain can be nice sometimes…”
“What do you want?” He suddenly turned to you, unamused.
“Umm… would it be possible… only if you’re comfortable with it… Could I get your number?”
“Absolutely not.” And with that, he stormed off. You wanted to disappear, your face a flaming red. You glared towards Jeongin, currently almost wetting himself with laughter.
“That’s great, go up to another guy and do that again.” He choked out in between his cries of laughter.
“Not a chance. If you’re not taking this seriously, I can just go. But say goodbye to your tutoring.”
He sighs, sobering up from the hilarity of the previous situation.
“Fine, just try again. This time, just be upfront straight away. Just say something like, I saw you across the mall, and you looked super attractive.”
You scoffed, “That would literally only work for you.”
“Why would it only work for me?”
“Look at you, then look at me. There’s a very specific difference.”
“Now, that’s not the attitude we want. Right now, me and you are on the same level. You can totally do this.”
You sigh, slightly blushing at his embarrassing comment. You spent the next half an hour completing this task, going through about ten people before finally getting someone’s number.
You paid him back by studying chemistry notes with him, passing him the extra notes you made during class. You made him promise to do an hour’s revision each night, until his grades finally improved. This arrangement would work, you were sure of it. You were counting on it.
Tumblr media
Things seemed to be looking up for you, until you reached the expected fall from grace that you were used to. Walking into school the next day, you were greeted with whispers and stares. You had never felt more popular in your life, it made you uncomfortable.
Finally, you were approached by a girl you didn’t really recognise, but vaguely remember seeing close to Seungmin. She looked around conspiratorially leaning in to ask something from you.
“Is it true that you have a crush on Seungmin?” She asked. Your heart immediately sunk, was that what they were all whispering about? How had any of them found out? Why was everyone so suddenly interested in you? Sure, your more recent interactions with Jeongin had been giving you a few stares, but this was out of nowhere. Why did everyone suddenly believe this, with no evidence?
You stuttered out a no in reply to the girl, rushing down the corridor to your locker. The only people you had told about your crush on Seungmin were Jennie and Rose. They hadn’t done this to you, had they? But then the answer became embarrassingly clear.
There she was, Luna, grinning at you in front of your locker.
“You should tell Jennie and Rose to quieten their conversations. It’s quite easy to overhear things if you want to. That is, if they even would want to talk to you anymore…” She gave a sadistic smile before walking off towards the girl’s bathroom.
You turned around, seeing the one guy you didn’t want to see. Seungmin. He avoided eye contact with you, quickly turning around and half sprinting down the corridor. Great. This is exactly what you needed. You needed to talk to Jeongin.
You sprinted over to Jeongin’s locker, only to find him flirting with a couple of cheerleaders. Rather than explaining anything to him, you grabbed his arm and pulled him into an empty classroom nearby.
“Woah, what’s this all about?”
“The entire school knows about my crush on Seungmin, thanks to Luna.”
“Seems like something she’d do.”
“Why aren’t you panicking?”
“Because this has given you a great opportunity to ask him out. He already knows now, what do you have to lose? Just ask him out.”
“You think he’d say yes?”
“Look. Y/N. Even though we haven’t always got along, I’ve known you since I was like two. You’re a good person, you have a great sense of humour, and you’re not bad looking. He’d be an idiot not to say yes.”
You blushed at Jeongin’s sudden compliment. It wasn’t that you liked him or anything like that, it was just unexpected, that’s all.
“Ok, I’ll do it. At least I can get over him if he says no.”
Leaving Jeongin in the classroom, you raced down the halls towards Seungmin.
“Um.. hey Seungmin.” You say, slightly out of breath.
“Hey, Y/N.” He gives an awkward smile. “What’s up?”
“I think you’ve probably heard it by now, but I really like you. And I was just wondering, if it’s alright with you, maybe we could go out sometime?” You hold your breath, anticipating the rejection sure to come your way.
“Sure, I’d like that.” It seemed like the world had faded away with his reply. You wanted to jump for joy, but you played it cool.
“Great, this Saturday?”
Tumblr media
You were just arriving back from school when you heard it coming from Jeongin’s, the familiar shouting. His parents were going through a rough patch, and you could see where it was heading. As a child of divorce, you weren’t exactly optimistic about it.
You sent a text to Jeongin, are you okay? Minutes later he storms out of the house, slamming the door later. Seems like quite an obvious answer.
“Hey, are you okay?” Your eyes filled with concern.
“Do I look ok? Is any of this ok?” You were taken aback by him snapping at you, whilst you both had been hostile to each other previously, Jeongin had never raised his voice at you. He apologised immediately.
“Sorry, I shouldn’t take it out on you… it’s just every day now. I wish they would get a divorce already.”
“Do you want to go somewhere else, I know a great place to clear your head.”
He nods, and that’s all you needed. It wasn’t a long walk, a little into the woods. You come over to a mishmashed pile of wood.
“Wait, is this the den we built as kids?” He broke out into a grin.
“Yeah it is, now I just go here to think.”
“Didn’t even remember this place, I can remember now how long it took to build.”
“And look what our efforts gave us.”
“I don’t know about you, but it’s a masterpiece.” He says, sarcastically gazing over the pieces of wood.
“I’m glad you’re feeling a little better.” Bad idea, as soon as you mentioned it, his face drooped.
“I don’t know what to do, I just can’t deal with it anymore.”
“Don’t beat yourself up about it, it hurts at first, but in the long run it’s much better for everyone.”
“I know, it’s just different. I don’t even know if I can remember a time when they liked each other.”
“They loved each other enough to make you. I think that’s proof enough.”
He looked down at you, eyes welling with tears. “Thank you,” He sniffled.
“No problem, seriously, I’m here any time that you want to talk.”
And as though it was out of nowhere, he gentle grabbed your face and kissed you. He was gentle and passionate, careful but forceful. In fact, you couldn’t really explain the feeling of being kissed by Jeongin, though unsettling butterflies arose within your stomach.
Eventually, as though he had come to his senses, he pulled away, panic in his eyes.
“Sorry… uhh…. That was just to check in case…  I don’t know, you hadn’t been kissed in a while.”
“Is that what it seemed like to you? That I hadn’t kissed someone in a while.”
He looked at you guiltily, and that was enough for you. It was best to forget that this ever happened in the first place.
Tumblr media
Desperate to rid your mind of the moment you had with Jeongin, you were glad that you were going on your date with Seungmin the following day. He had given you his address, but there had been no word on what you were doing. You were unsure whether to dress fancy or casual, but eventually decided that you’d rather dress up than down. At least then you’d look nicer.
You arrived at his house and he announced to you that he was just going to cook food here. It was sweet of him, having spent all this time cooking food for you. It had to mean something right? Maybe he did like you, more than he had let on.
Leaving you alone, you slowly inspected the dining room, he had asked if you were a fan of sushi and you readily agreed. You really hoped that this date would measure up to what you had been dreaming of, you really wanted your hard work with Jeongin had paid off.
Here you go, he suddenly entered the room, putting a plate of sushi down in front of you. You gave him an awkward smile and the two of you settled into an equally awkward conversation.
“So how did you get into music?” You asked.
“Well it’s always just spoke to me you know, it’s like when I see a person I always thinking of song lyrics. I love coming up with new riffs on my guitar.”
“That’s really cool, have you been working on anything recently? If your comfortable, I’d love to hear it.”
“I have actually, it’s for this one person that I really like.” You smiled, this had to be about you right? You were on this date, it would be really sweet of him to serenade you.
“Oh, and who is this person?”
“Ah… it’s actually your friend Jennie. I was hoping you could put in a good word for me?”
This couldn’t be happening, he wasn’t just DUFFing you this entire time. He brought you over here, made you sushi, just so he could have a chance with your former best friend?  You got up, eyes filled with angry tears.
“I can’t believe you! And I thought you were different. You must think I’m some sort of idiot.”
You barge out the door, only to find a takeaway sushi bag in the bin. He didn’t even bother to make food for you. Why had you expected anything from this man?
“By the way, you can tell the people who made it, that the food was lovely. Too bad that the company was shit!”
You stormed out, leaving him speechless, and beelining for the one place you needed right now. You needed to think, only the den would give you a clear mind after that ruckus.
Only when you arrived, it was already occupied by Jeongin… and Luna. Your heart sank, the two of them didn’t notice you, too wrapped up in making out. You couldn’t believe that you thought for a second he actually cared, when you had been vulnerable and shown him your place together.
This was really turning out to be quite a shitty night. You were done, whatever this thing was with Jeongin had to stop, because it was obviously becoming more important to you than it was to him. Now that you thought about it, the person who you wanted to be on a date with tonight was him. Too late now.
Tumblr media
You had to right your wrongs, and the first thing you needed to do was see Rose and Jennie. You had really fucked up breaking off your friendship with them, being paranoid over some stupid phrase, when all it really came from were shitty people. You approached the two of them in the cafeteria, sitting down at their table.
“Hey” You greet them, avoiding eye contact.
“Why are you sitting with us all of a sudden? I thought we were using you?” Jennie raises an eyebrow.
“I fucked up, I’m sorry. I let some stupid comment get to my head and took it out on you.”
“Why would you do that? I thought you trusted us.” Rose pouted.
“To be honest, I’ve always noticed how you two were so much more liked and popular and more attractive than me. I suppose I was being insecure. I’m sorry, I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Of course, we forgive you, you idiot.” Rose flung you into a three-way hug.
“Just don’t do it again, okay? You’re a wonderful person, and you keep us together. Who was saying this shit to you anyway?” Jennie muttered.
“Jeongin.”
“And you believed him? When has anything reliable come out of his mouth?”
“He’s not awful, plus, this whole ordeal made me realise that I don’t like Seungmin. He likes you though, Jennie.”
“Well, I don’t like him. I plan on going to the prom alone.”
“Wait, so am I! That means that the three of us can all go to prom together. We made up just in time!” Rose squealed.
So that’s how you even ended up at prom in the first place, you admitted it hurt seeing Jeongin being paraded around with Luna. But at least he was happy with her. But you just wanted to let him know one thing, so you managed to corner him when Luna wasn’t looking.
“Hey, Jeongin.”
“Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. How did the date go?”
“Well he DUFFed me, so I went to the den only to find you there…”
“Shit, sorry Y/N. I shouldn’t have taken her there, in fact, I-”
“It doesn’t matter, Jeongin. I just wanted to come over and tell you that I like you. You always told me to be upfront about it, so here I am. I know you’re back together with Luna, but I just wanted you to know.”
“Y/N, I-”
“What are you doing near my boyfriend?” Luna pushed between the two of you, “Why don’t you get the hell away from me before I make you.”
“You know, I didn’t really get you before, but now I do.” You look at her cooly, “ I get it, homelife must be hard, so you put down others to make yourself feel better. You act like everyone here is stupid, even your boyfriend, when in reality it doesn’t even matter. Just give it up, nothing’s going to matter after high school anyway, why are you so obsessed with it now.”
“Whatever, what would you know about any of that.”
“She’s right. In fact, I don’t even know why we got back together again.” Jeongin spoke up.
“You are not breaking up with me on prom night, we have crowns to win!” She snapped. He ignored her, looking straight at you.
“Do you want to get out of here?”
“I’d love to.”

Hoseok had been at veterinary school for quite a while now, having been initially drawn to it through his love of animals and helping them, however, this has since dramatically changed. Hoseok had reached a mental block, and it was about to crash and burn.
He just couldn’t seem to do it, even if it would help them in the end, doing any sort of surgery (even just injecting them with a needle) caused him to break into cold sweats. His brain flashed to thoughts of surgery gone wrong, causing him to tremble uncontrollably.
“Hoseok, why aren’t you injecting her with the anaesthetic?” His superior, Professor Shin, questions slightly worried.
Looking at the poor quivering dog, with nothing really wrong with her, he picked her up and ran through the corridors, ignoring the yelling coming from the operating room. He eventually reaches outside, placing the dog in his lap, panting heavily. He looked down at her, gently placed on his lap and felt a sense of ease. Thank god he wasn’t in there anymore.
Catching his breath, the little terrier took her chance to escape that place altogether (probably thinking Hoseok would take her back in), hopping out of his lap and running as fast as her little legs could take her down the road. Hoseok immediately set off after her, probably thinking he’d be in more trouble if he didn’t return with her.
That’s where you came in, strolling peacefully in the park, clutching a book in your hand. Seeing what you assumed to be a stray, you called it over, offering it part of your leftover sandwich. It yips at you, taking it gladly and rests at your feet.
It is only then that you notice a man in scrubs not far behind, panicking and looking for the dog, it must not be a stray after all. You call him over, “Is this your dog?” You ask, helpfully.
“Well, yes… but no. She belongs to the Veterinary school down the road, I need to bring her back.” He seems flustered and tired.
“Ah, so she’s a stowaway,” You grinned, looking down at the dog, she had finished the sandwich and was perking up. You looked back up at the man, seeing how stressed he is.
“Do you want to sit down?” You offered, “You look like you need a rest.”
“Thanks, I think I do.” He slumps down on the bench next to you.
“How did it happen?” You asked, a little curious about how a little dog could evade so many veterinary students.
“Ahh, well I kind of ran off with her.” He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
“Oh, why?” You were a little confused.
“I just didn’t want them to inject her, I know it can help her, but it just didn’t seem fair. I know it’s irrational, but…” He trails off.
“You’re allowed to feel that way, if it doesn’t feel right for you, it’s not your fault.” You sympathise. “I’m Y/N, by the way.”
“I’m Hoseok.”
Looking around, you realise the little dog had gone and stood up suddenly.
“Not to scare you, but I think we’ve lost your dog again.” You alerted him
“Now that there’s two of us, maybe we can find her quicker?” He looks at you hopefully. You nod, having nothing better to do.
You begin looking around for the dog, having nothing really to call her, with no name given to her that she would respond. Eventually, you spotted her, but it was already too late. A man was already picking up the dog and stroking her head.
“Hey,” You yell out, Hoseok runs to you, “He’s taking her away.”
“Quick, let’s follow him!” Hoseok ran off, with you not far behind.
You did not think this was how your day would go.
Tumblr media
You trailed this strange man down the back streets of Seoul for a good twenty minutes. He was wearing a large trench coat, filled with pockets in strange places, dashing down the alleys with an air of mystery. Despite the circumstances, the little dog seemed entirely at ease, resting in his arms as though she was on a sofa.
The two of you ran after him, and you quickly came to the conclusion that this man had superhuman stamina (or you really needed to get in shape). He was nimble, and you trailed behind. It also seemed that Hoseok had grabbed your hand at some point during the commotion, to prevent you from falling too far back (which definitely wasn’t making you blush). You were definitely slowing him down.
Finally, the man looked around conspiratorially and entered a house covered by a large tree. Sneaking past it yourself, you went past cages of animals, and paddocks filled with alpacas. There were chickens, dogs, cats, and even a bearded dragon. Had you just stumbled into an animal rescue? This was not what you had expected. You look up, painted on a sign in bold: Mansae’s Sanctuary.
Wandering in, you both crouched behind one of the cages, as though you were in some James Bond film. You scan the shop for any sight of the man but come back empty-handed. Hoseok does the same until his eyes fixate on one corner, he seems to have found them both. At this point, you didn’t know why you hadn’t just gone up to him and asked for the dog back, but oh well.
Suddenly, Hoseok stumbled backwards, crashing into one of the cages and causing it to cause a chain reaction of tumbling. In aid of helping him, you grab at his hand, which only succeeded in him pulling you down with him. You land on top of him, face blushing with embarrassment, as you attempt to get up off him.
“What are you doing here?” A gruff voice sounded, the man.
“We’ve come for my dog, which you stole.” Hoseok attempted to sound brave, but you could see him shaking. He had since gotten up from the floor.
“I’ve already checked, the dog has no chip. I do not know if he is yours, in fact, judging by your current outfit it must be the Veterinary Schools…” He pondered, though equally stern.
“Can you give her back, please? He’ll get in trouble if not.” You tried to appeal to his kind side, if he had one.
“I’m not giving that dog back to that place, Baekmani will stay here now.” There was no chance you were getting her back now, the man had even named the dog. “Besides,” He continued, “You both owe me money, look at all the damage you caused.”
“I’m sorry, but I don’t have the money to pay you back.” Muttered an embarrassed Hoseok, of course, he didn’t, he was a student. You didn’t have any either, you were saving up for college this year.
“Then you’ll both have to work here to pay me back, what are your names.” He pulls out a whiteboard pen, waiting for us to tell him.
Hoseok mumbled out his first, and the man wrote 1,000,000 won next to his name. You then give him yours, only 500,000 won, because he explained: “you weren’t the initial cause of the fall”.
“Right I’ll see you both on Monday.” He clapped his hands together.
“We don’t even know your name, how do you expect us to work for you.” You retaliate, a little more courage than you expected.
“I’m Sanggyu, I’ll see you both on Monday.”
Tumblr media
You start working with Hoseok starting that Monday. Apart from his meek disposition on the first day that you met him, you realised that he was actually quite a loud person. He was a bright person, always up for a laugh and eager to make others laugh. He was like a ball of energy, someone everyone wanted to be around.
The two of you would clean out the cages, feed the various animals that resided within the shelter, and would basically do anything Sanggyu told you. Despite your initial feelings towards him, spending more time with him it became quite obvious that he cared a lot about the animals that lived in the shelter. He was also into something called animal behaviourism, which you admittedly knew nothing about, but seemed to intrigue Hoseok as a trainee veterinarian.
You and Hoseok spent most of your lunches together, usually you spent time worrying over Hoseok. He hadn’t been back to the veterinary school for over two weeks, only doing online work, and you were worried he was going to be kicked out.
“I’ll be fine,” He smiled reassuringly.
“Are you sure,” You say, “If you need any help, you can just say.”
“I’ve already got you in enough trouble already, I don’t want to bother you any further.”
“But I’ve offered my help to you, I really don’t mind.”
“Y/N, it’s fine.”
The conversation was dropped pretty quickly after that, but it wasn’t because he was mean or anything like that. You could tell that he cared about you, and didn’t want to worry you. You guessed that this was his way of trying to prevent you from thinking that way.
As you both got closer to each other, Hoseok became Hobi, and Hobi would just call you what he felt like. He was playful and kind, and you might have developed a slight crush on the man. But you would ignore it… for now, there were more pressing issues to deal with.
Responsibilities were ramping up at the shelter, and you weren’t sure if you could deal with it. You would find out soon enough.
Tumblr media
“Get up you two, we’re going on a trip today,” Sanggyu says gruffly. He makes you jump, your mind having been focused on the mundane task he had set for you, not prepared for his blunt nature. You were intrigued, he’d never mentioned this before, often going out by himself.
The three of you packed up all the things Sanggyu deemed necessary for this little trip, and clamber into Sanggyu’s battered car. Baekmani comes to, having become quite attached to the three of you. Instead of sitting in the front, the two of you were shoved into the back, with Baekmani lucky enough to take the front seat. You were both in between masses of piles of things you were taking with you, this was not as fun as you originally thought it would be.
Sanggyu drives for a while, eventually arriving at a group of stables in the countryside. Getting out of the car, you were immediately greeted with the smell of horse poo, you wrinkled your nose.
“Not enjoying the countryside, Y/N?” Hobi grinned mischievously.
“Can you not tell that I’m having so much fun?” You grinned back, playfully rolling your eyes.
You follow Sanggyu, lugging all of his stuff, whilst he suffered through none of it. Whilst originally going to the farmhouse, the three of you (and Baekmani) were guided to one of the stables. In it lay a beautiful jet black stallion, it led on the floor huffing.
“He hasn’t been eating, he keeps refusing all his food. We called over the vet, but they said nothing was wrong with him physically. You’re our last hope.” The owner explained with nervous eyes.
“Leave it to me,” Sanggyu mumbled, dropping to his knees, and slowly approaching the horse.
He began whispering, the three of you glancing down at him, slightly puzzled. He began whispering, to himself or the horse you didn’t know. He ran his hands over the horse, staying there and doing his own thing for five minutes, and then the horse got up.
Sanggyu picked up an apple, which the horse picked from him and began feasting on it. You all watched in some sort of amazement, but no one in that room was more amazed than Hobi.
“How did you do that?” He asked.
“It’s the one thing vets can’t do.” Sanggyu grinned smugly at him.
Hobi had never been more intrigued.
Tumblr media
Hobi had become very interested in animal behaviourism since that day, having picked up and started reading one of Sanggyu’s several books on the topic. In every spare moment he had, he would spend it reading them, until he just suddenly stopped.
“What’s up with you?” You asked him, with concern.
“School called me, I’m going back.” He stated.
“That’s great, Hobi.”
“I’m not coming back, I’ve paid back my debt. So have you.” He said coldly, you wondered why he suddenly changed so quickly.
“I thought you cared more about this place, about me… and the animals.” You stuttered out, in utter shock.
“I just paid back my debt, Y/N. You’re a good person, but I don’t want to be here.” He said firmly, though you saw his eyes wavering. He seemed happy here, why was he lying to you?
Hoseok left shortly after, and you stared at the door expecting him to come back. Expecting him to apologise, and say that he was being stupid. But it just didn’t happen.
You come in the next day, did all of your opening chores and waited for Sanggyu to arrive. You waited hours, but he failed to appear. Perhaps he was just running late? But as you waited longer and longer, it became more obvious that this wasn’t the case. There was no car in the drive, the entire place was desolate. Void of anyone but you and the animals.
You came in day after day, but neither of them came back. You do your best to look after the animals, feeding them and socialising them, along with the upkeep of the shelter. You wanted them to come back, the place wasn’t the same without Sanggyu’s grumpiness and Hoseok’s brightness. You need them to come back, why did they do this to you? Did they really not care about you this much? Did they not care about the animals?
You were just confused.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the second week of the shelter, you got a phone call. It was Hoseok, you looked at it for a minute. You debated whether you should answer at all, after all, he wasn’t answering any of your calls. You eventually decided not to be petty, if he was calling you after ignoring you after all week, it could be something quite serious.
“Hello.” You answered, tense.
“Hey, Y/N. I know I’m bothering you. Please can just come to the vet school, I really need your help.” He sounded tired and stressed. Despite the fact you promised yourself to stay mad at him, you still felt the tiniest bit sorry for him.
“What do you need me for? Can’t you do it yourself?”
“Please just come, I know you’re mad, and you have every right to be. Please just come.” And with that, he hung up the phone.
You groaned in frustration, before picking up your things and making your way to the vet school. This would be the last thing that you did for him.
Arriving, you weren’t the only person there. It was him, Sanggyu, you erupted like a volcano.
“Where the hell have you been?!” You explode at him.
“I take it Hoseok forgot to tell you that I was taking two weeks off. I’ll make sure to tell him off, along with the fact that he interrupted what could have been a wonderful Tuesday.” He answered gruffly, though seemingly concerned over your outburst.
“You can’t expect me to look after that place by myself!”
“Well you will be for another week, I booked it off when the both of you still worked for me.”
“We didn’t work, that implied we got money. We volunteered.” You were furious.
“I’ll compensate you for the two weeks, don’t worry.” He nods, and you calm down significantly.
The door opens, Hoseok standing there flustered, hair plastered to his forehead.
“Thank god you’re both here! I need help!”
He led you both down several winding corridors until you reached a room full of puppies. You cooed at them, petting them as Hoseok explained the situation.
“One of them swallowed Chaeson’s engagement ring, he was going to propose to his girlfriend with that.” He pointed to one of the other students, “We’ve been trying to get them to poo for the past hour.”
“Hoseok refuses to just let us use some medication to get them out.” Another student, Minkyu, sniggers, “So you’re his last hope.”
Surprisingly, Sanggyu approached him, whispering in his ear, pulling him closer to the puppies. The two hovered over the pups for a good ten minutes, whispering things to them. From what you gathered, it was a mixture of things, along with encouragement. Finally, the puppies did what everyone wanted, and the ring popped out.
Only then, do you realise that you didn’t need to be here. So why had he invited you in the first place, he only needed Sanggyu. You knew nothing about animal behaviourism.
You were interrupted from your thoughts when a man opened the door, and it became apparent that he was more important than these students. This must be Hoseok’s professor, he didn’t seem like much fun at all.
“What’s all the racket going on in this room?” He says sternly. There was a muttering of sorry’s until Professor Shin laid his eyes on Sanggyu. “Long time no see Sanggyu.”
You all look over at him in shock, why did they know each other. Sanggyu only nodded.
“It’s been a while since you’ve been back here, ever since that experiment of yours went wrong.” He gave a callous smile. Sanggyu had done animal experimentation, all your respect for that man vanished.
“You experimented on animals?!” Hoseok exclaimed, getting worked up before leaving the room entirely. Sanggyu did not even try to defend himself throughout the ordeal, he had done it. The guilt was written on his face.
You left also, though Hoseok was nowhere to be found, you needed time away from these people. After this final week, you were done with the shelter. You were taking that money and leaving.
Tumblr media
You finish your final week quickly, eager to get out of the place that reminded you of too many hard memories. You finished your cleaning, heading to Sanggyu’s office. He had arrived about half an hour ago. Wordlessly, he hands you a cheque. You turn to leave.
“Before you go, I want you to know it wasn’t malicious. I don’t care about what those vets think, but I value your opinion. You’re a good kid, I know you care about the animals here” He confessed.
“What good reason can there be for animal experimentation?” You scoffed slightly, not ready to forgive this man.
“There’s no excuse, I was desperate. Mansae was my dog for ten years, and got health complications. I wanted to save her, but no other method would work, so I tried something different. It didn’t help, and I lost my dignity. I quit the veterinary soon after, I want to help animals in other ways. Medical aren’t all the ways we can help animals, they’re like us after all, and we’re not like that.” He explained.
“I don’t agree with what you did, but I guess I can understand. Still, I can’t work anymore.”
“I know it’s because of him. You should talk to him, I know he cares about you, he’s just being stubborn.”
You nodded at Sanggyu, leaving shortly after and getting the bus back home. Lying on your bed and staring at the ceiling, you pondered what Sanggyu had said. You really shouldn’t call him, he should be calling you. But he did apologise, and you didn’t need to be there. He just wanted to see you, he had to.
Against your better judgement, you picked up your phone and dialled his number. It went to voicemail, which you expected, but instead of confessing your feelings, you explained what Sanggyu had told you. He deserved to know, you didn’t want his view of animal behaviourism to be tainted by Sanggyu’s mistakes.
You don’t hear from Hoseok for another week, nor Sanggyu, until the silence is broken with a call. It was Sanggyu, and there was something wrong with Baekmani, something that the vet couldn’t solve. So why was he calling you? He knew what to do in these situations better than anyone.
Nevertheless, you cared about that little dog, so you made your way to the shelter. It felt weird stepping into the place again, but you were greeted enthusiastically by the animals you had grown to love. You smiled at them, and then you saw him. Of course, Sanggyu had invited him, Hoseok.
Hoseok was leaning over Baekmani, Sanggyu got up and stood next to you, smiling at you knowingly. You knew what this man was doing, you doubted that there was anything wrong with Baekmani at all. Since when was Sanggyu a matchmaker?
“There is something wrong with Baekmani, I know what your thinking, I know what it is. I just want him to realise it, we both know he doesn’t enjoy his time at the vet school.” Sanggyu muttered lowly in your ear.
Suddenly Baekmani yapped, running up to you and jumping at your knees. Hoseok grinned, not realising you were there, “I know what she was bothered about, she missed us.”
Then he realised you were here, and it went quiet. The two of you didn’t break contact, and it was becoming a little uncomfortable for Sanggyu. “It’s nice to have you both back here,” he said.
“Yeah,” Hoseok smiled, “It is.”
Tumblr media
You stepped outside, to get some air, the tension almost suffocating you. You couldn’t stand to be around him anymore, you liked him and you were hurt. You knew you had no real right to, it wasn’t like he reciprocated them anyway. If he did, he wouldn’t have left.
“Hey, Y/N.” His voice made you jump, Hoseok.
“Hi,” You muttered back, folding your arms around yourself protectively.
“I’m sorry for leaving you, I just felt like I needed to go back. That I’d made it so far that I needed to finish it, even though I don’t really want to be a vet anymore.”
“You didn’t have to tell me so cruelly.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I just, I needed to tell myself that I didn’t like you. If I didn’t, I would have stood no chance at leaving.”
“What did you just say to me?”
“I like you, and I’m quitting vet school. I’m going to try and become an animal behaviourist.” He simplified it.
“You know you can’t just waltz back and expect me to forgive you immediately.” You hide your face, but you’re grinning. He was stupid, but he liked you.
“I know, and I’m willing to do anything to win you back.”
You raised an eyebrow, “Anything.”
“Anything.”
You were feeling gutsy, and stupid. But you’d deal with the consequences later. “Ok, kiss me.” You replied.
Answering your call, he pressed his lips to yours, gently as though you would pull away at any moment. You stayed there for a moment, his arms wrapped around you, not caring about anything else. Until you finally pulled away, smiling.
“If kissing is all I have to do to have your forgiveness, then I guess I’ll be breaking the rules more often.”

A/N Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, had a bunch of final exams for uni. Now that they’re done I’m really looking forward to posting again. Almost finished with my BTS World series and I am looking forward to moving onto another one. Anyway, hope you enjoy :)

Tumblr media
You had never planned to move to Korea, it kind of just… happened. Fluent in Korean, your boss asked you to transfer to Korea after they were laying off some people. It seemed like they thought you were good enough and didn’t really want to let you go. This seemed like the better option over being unemployed.
You worked for the government as a social worker, having gotten your degree a couple of years ago. You had taken up Korean as a hobby, after meeting a Korean girl online and becoming friends. You taught each other your respective languages over zoom, becoming very close. Actually, so close that you would be staying with her until you could find an apartment yourself. You wanted to test the new work environment first.
Your friend’s name was Kim Eunwoo, she was a year older than you and working in finance. Like you, she was a fan of Kpop and it was something that you both often bonded over. Each of you having different tastes, you introduced each other to different groups and soloists, though never quite heavily overlapping.
After leaving the plane, you make your way towards the pick-up station, looking out for Eunwoo. It was easy to spot her, jumping up and down like a maniac, squealing aloud. She runs at you, engulfing you in a hug.
“It’s so good to finally see you in person.” You smile into her shoulder.
“I know, I have so much of Seoul to show you! Maybe we can even go to Jeju on one of your days off!” She is bouncing on the tips of her feet excitedly.
“I’d love that. Thank you again, for letting me stay with you.”
“Don’t worry about it, I know first-hand how hard it is to find a reasonably priced apartment in Seoul. This one is truly a diamond in the rough.”
You grinned at her, “What are you waiting for then, let’s go and see Seoul.”
Grabbing your bags, the two of you clambered into the car, shoving your suitcases in the back seat, before driving back to Eunwoo’s apartment.
The busy nature of the city enthralled you, despite having been to so many cities before- this one seemed like no other. You had a feeling that you were going to love this place, you just didn’t know why just yet.
Tumblr media
You had been living in Seoul for two months now, and you loved it. Whilst it had been a big adjustment, you had made a lot of work friends and were smitten with the kids you were working with. Though you and Eunwoo both had busy schedules, the two of you would go out for dinner quite often and you developed a love for Teokbokki.
However, tonight was a little different. Eunwoo was spending her time at a work event, with you having decided to catch up on work. Having spent a couple of hours on it, you ventured outside for a break. Eventually ending up near the local convenience store and in front of a vending machine. You had developed quite the craving for a fizzy drink, having worked up a sweat on your walk.
You put in your money, pick a fruity drink to wake you up, and input the code into the machine. It begins to vibrate, and you wait in anticipation, but it didn’t come out. It rattled to a stop, the can teetering over the edge, but it refused to fall. “Shit,” you muttered under your breath, you banged the side of the machine as covertly as you could, you didn’t want any passers-by to get any wrong ideas.
As time passes you get a little more desperate, banging on the side to no avail, it seemed utterly stuck. You sighed, almost giving up, turning and stumbling into a large frame. He was tall, wearing a hoodie and a facemask, the only recognisable part of him were the tufts of black hair emerging from his hoodie.
“Do you need a little help?” He seems amused, his dark eyes creasing into little moons, sparkling with hidden laughter.
“I’d love some, though I’m not sure you can. I’ve been trying for a while and it’s well and truly stuck.” You give him a sad grin.
“Let me try,” You move aside and allow him to input the same number as you, waiting for the can to drop. Fortunately, this time into didn’t get stuck, leaving two cans thundering to the bottom. He opens the slit, pulling them both out.
“Here you go,” He passes it to you.
“Thank you, you didn’t need to do that.” You thank him, kind of amazed he pulled it off.
“It was no problem, really, I’ve had the same problem so many times. It was about time I used my experience to help someone else.”
“Well now that you’ve told me that, it’s much less impressive.” You joke.
“Yeah, to be honest, most times I come here I end up home with two drinks.”
“Well, I’m glad I could help you save some money.”
“Thanks. Sorry, but you don’t seem to be around here. You just moved here?”
“You’ve caught me, I’m a foreigner. I got a job here abroad and just moved here. I’m living with my friend temporarily.”
“Well if you need a tour guide, I’m happy to show you around.”
Looking at his kind eyes and smile, you grin up at him.
“I’d like that.”
“I’m Soobin, by the way.”
“Y/N.”
Shortly after you exchange numbers.
Tumblr media
You don’t hear from Soobin for a couple of days, but you can’t help but be disappointed. You don’t know him too well, he could be quite a busy man, you didn’t know what job he had. In fact, now that you thought of it, you didn’t even know how old he was. Still, you wanted to find out more about him.
You were at work, typing up a file on your desk. Your nosey deskmate, Chaeyoung, was looking over at you, analysing your downtrodden face.
“There’s something up with you today.” She exclaims.
“What do you mean?” You retaliate.
“You’ve been all sad, I keep seeing you staring at your phone. Did you have a bad date or something over the weekend?” She asked.
“No, it’s just that I met someone, and he got my number. I just haven’t heard from him in a while.”
Chaeyoung glanced over at you in pity, “I’m sure that he’ll respond soon.”
You nod, absentmindedly staring at your screen, attempting to get some work done and distract your mind from a man that you had only talked to for ten minutes. Why did you want to see him again so much, it’s not like you even had that much of a unique conversation. You haven’t even seen the majority of his face. Maybe that intrigued you?
As though the universe had heard your call, a buzz sounded from your phone, immediately glancing over at it, you picked it up and analysed the message. It was from him, Soobin. It read:
Hey, Y/N it’s Soobin. I hope this is the right number. I was just wondering if you were free on Saturday for that tour I mentioned?
You grinned down at the phone, and Chaeyoung giggled.
“Looks like the mystery man has finally texted you. What’s his name?”
“Soobin.”
“Ahh, I’ve been on a lot of dates with Soobin’s. Let me know what he looks like so I can make sure you aren’t dating an ex-boyfriend.”
“I will do, Chaeyoung.”
“Oh, and make sure that you don’t text back right away. Don’t want to look too desperate after he’s kept you waiting for so long.”

On Saturday, you met up with Soobin in a nearby park. He was the same, in a hoodie and a facemask, and you couldn’t help but wonder why he always wore it. You didn’t want to point it out to him though, what if he was insecure about his appearance, it wouldn’t be very good first date talk.
“Hey,” You greeted him. The two of you made your way to the centre of the park, the two of you found a shaded area not too far away, covered by bushes, preventing any unwanted passers-by from snooping in on them. Only then did Soobin remove his mask.
He was handsome, in fact, he might pass for an idol in Korea. His face was symmetrical, and his smile has pretty dimples that matches his moonlike eyes. Put it simply, he was pretty, and you had no idea why a man this attractive seemed intent on hiding his face. This was not something you would do if you were in his position.
After laying down a blanket, the two of you help yourselves to a picnic, having each brought an array of tasty Korean dishes. To top it all off at the end, you ate some dessert, helping yourself to some strawberries dipped in chocolate. All the while, Soobin told you some stories about his life, you found him to be witty and charming. He made you laugh.
He was in the entertainment business, not as a performer, but as one of the assistant managers. He said it was a start, but that he enjoyed it. You joked that he was handsome enough to be an idol, but instead of him laughing like you expected, he almost choked on the water he was drinking. You hated to think you made him feel uncomfortable.
Despite all this, the date went well and you found a lot to like about each other, you were surprised at how much you had in common, with you both having a love for animals and music, sharing those that you enjoyed. At the end, Soobin put on his mask and walked you back to your shared apartment, like a gentleman would.
“Thanks for agreeing to go on a date with me.” He gave a shy smile.
“Of course I would, you’re really nice Soobin. I’d love to do it again, even if I did embarrass myself with my off-key singing.” You gave him a smile.
“Hey you were better than me.”
“You liar! You sang like an angel, I heard you.”
“Maybe I need to give you some lessons then.”
“Maybe you do. We might have to schedule an appointment for that though.”
“We might. Though I can give you a preview of it now if you want.”
“Sure, I’m intrigued to know your wisdom.”
He stepped closer to you. “So you need to warm up your lips first,” He grinned, “You might need a partner for this.”
Catching on, you take a step further, and he wrapped his arms around your waist, pressing a sweet but short kiss to your lips.
“There you go, that’s your taster session over.” He smiled, removing his arms from you.
“I’d love to see you again Soobin.”
Tumblr media
You and Soobin go on several dates over the next two months, with the two of you spending increasingly more time together. No date was the same, the two of you changing it up all the time, with Soobin being surprisingly creative.
Over those months, you had movie nights (though only when no one was home at his), a board game night at yours (also no one at home), a takeaway night, and you even went on a midnight swim together (which was probably the more romantic of the group).
During this period, you realised that he was a great kisser, and that you wanted to kiss him literally all the time. Other than that, he was also a great listener, and you felt like you could vent all of your problems to him and he would always listen, nowadays that’s a hard trait to come by.
Nothing had ever been as public as the picnic dates, and even then they were covered by quite a lot of bushes. You supposed that was part of the fun of it, it was almost like some forbidden romance, the two of you giggling behind others’ backs and running off together where no one could find you. Though you hoped to finally tell Eunwoo about your new relationship, you had been dying to tell her who made you so happy.
Luckily, he seemed pretty open to meeting with her, though you could help but see the anxiety behind his smile.
“Don’t worry, she’ll love you!” You attempted to reassure him.
“Thanks.” Was Soobin’s short reply, perhaps that wasn’t what he was worried about.
Tumblr media
Soobin came over after work today, you had invited him over to cook with you. You also told him this would be the first time he would meet Eunwoo, “So we can’t poison her with our cooking,” you joked.
“Excuse me, I’ll have you know that I’m a very good cook. I’m culinary school material.” He grinned, waggling a spoon in your face.
“Ok, Mr Chef, why don’t you show me how it’s done then.” You tease.
He pressed a kiss to your temple, “I will, just follow my lead.”
Putting it long story short, it was a shambles. The two of you had picked a recipe way beyond your capability and were struggling to make it edible, never mind appetising. Looks like Soobin’s ‘culinary school experience’ wasn’t doing him much good.
“Well, well, well, what do we have here?” The two of you turn around, startled by the sudden presence of someone new. It was Eunwoo, Soobin immediately tensed up. She smiled at the both of you.
“Eunwoo, this is Soobin, my boyfriend.” You introduce each other.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Soobin bowed politely.
“So you’re the famous Soobin. It’s nice to finally meet the man taking up all my bestie’s time.” She teased.
“I guarantee you that it’s more fun than spending it with you,” You teased back, grinning ear to ear.
Next to you, Soobin let out a sigh of relief, and you wondered what for? It wasn’t like that she was going to hate him, but you guessed that most people still had that irrational fear. You were glad that he had at least quelled it for now.
“Oh yes, I’ve heard of these secret night rendezvous,” Eunwoo raised her eyebrow, “I imagine they’re usually more successful than this.” She points towards the shambolic meal behind the two of you.
Soobin bashfully scratched the back of his head, “Yeah, I might have picked out a recipe that’s a little too difficult for us both.”
“Maybe it’ll taste better than it looks?” Eunwoo offered up some comfort.
“I doubt it,” You grimaced, “But you’re allowed to do our first taste test if you want.”
Eunwoo considered it, before picking up a fork and placing some in her mouth. She chewed for a second before gagging and spitting it in the bin. “Not your best,” She choked out.
Whilst the food was bad, the main objective has still been achieved. Eunwoo seemed to like your boyfriend.
Tumblr media
A couple of weeks later after Soobin successfully met Eunwoo, you were happy to finally meet some of Soobin’s friends. You had kind of nagged him into meeting them, wanting badly to meet them, and despite his initial reluctance, he had finally said yes.
So there you were, in your best clothes, waiting for Soobin in your living room. Eunwoo poked out of her room and gave you a grin. “Good luck,” She said, “Dealing with one man at a time is enough, never mind another four.” You rolled your eyes, Eunwoo giggling and disappearing back into her room. Soobin arrived a couple of minutes later.
The walk to Soobin’s apartment wasn’t long, the two of you filling up the silence with pleasant conversation, mainly on how you were nervous to meet so many of his friends at once.
“I was nice to you, you know,” You teased, “You only met one of my friends, and now I have to meet four of yours.”
“Hey,” He grinned back, equally teasing, “you’re the one who was so keen to meet them. This is what you get.”
“What, so this is a punishment then?”
“That depends on how much you like them.”
You arrive at the apartment shortly afterwards, the two of you taking off your facemasks once you leave the elevator and are closing in on his door. Your hands were slightly shaking with anticipation, Soobin gave them a squeeze of reassurance.
“Are you ready for this? There’s no turning back.”
You took his hand, “I’m ready”, and with that, he unlocked the door.
As soon as you enter, four tall men (though not as tall as Soobin) descended on you as though you were the most intriguing person in the world. They immediately introduced themselves as Yeonjun, Taehyun, Beomgyu and Kai. Having met them for only a couple of minutes, you could already tell that they were very different people, you wondered how they came to be friends?
You sat down as a group to watch a movie, Beomgyu was teasing Yeonjun, and you gathered that this seemed to be quite a common occurrence. You quite enjoyed it, it was funny, they were like brothers.
“So what do you all do?” You asked them, and they grew silent, as though they didn’t know how to answer.
“Me and Beomgyu work in entertainment with Soobin.” Yeonjun stuttered slightly, as though he had made it up.
“Oh, what do you do within it?” You ask, intrigued.
“Mostly background stuff, nothing interesting,” Beomgyu replied quickly.
“Kai and I are university students, at the moment” Taehyun replied, it seemed more believable.
“We both study music,” Kai added on.
Despite the strange atmosphere, you all carried on an easy conversation, and you grew to quite like Soobin’s friends (though you supposed that was just because you had good taste in boyfriends). Though that one interaction was stuck in your mind, and you couldn’t help but wonder if they were hiding something, and why they were at all?
Tumblr media
It was one more month of dating before you went on a more public date again, most of your tender moments spent indoors, watching movies or playing video games. You were excited, you had always wanted to go ice skating, and after your birthday, Soobin had surprised you with bookings for it the following week.
You jumped about in the car as you both travelled to the destination, your giddy mood distracting you from how tense Soobin was next to you. You didn’t know what this meant, and how this could affect your relationship, negatively or positively? Either way, you both made it, ready to tie on your skates and dive into the ice.
Soobin readjusted his mask over his face as you dragged him into the rink, you pouted at him, “Are you going to wear that all the time?” You asked.
“I’m just staying safe, plus it’ll hide my laughter when you fall on your arse.” He grinned, eyes like crescent moons.
“But I want to see your face, plus we don’t have to wear them anymore. No one else is, you stick out a little bit. People are going to wonder why my handsome boyfriend won’t show his face.” You pout, whining that he should take it off, you just wanted to know why he was so hellbent on wearing it in the first place. You understood safety, but this was going a little too far.
He sighed, pulling it off and placing it in his pocket, “I suppose I don’t really need to wear it…”
You giggled, dragging him further into the ice. The two of you had fun, Soobin grabbing your waist to keep you steady as you struggled to keep your balance. There was nonstop laughter, you almost forgot that anyone else was there. The first half an hour was true bliss, until something unexpected happened.
Click.
“Did that man just take a photo of us?” You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion.
Soobin’s eyes widened, panicked. You only pointed out something strange, it wasn’t the end of the world.
“We need to get out of here,” Soobin announced.
He turned to you, serious suddenly. “There’s something I’ve not been telling you for a while, and I should have probably told you sooner…”
You became worried, was this why he was kind of shady, is this why his friends were acting a little weird that day?
“What is it, Soobin?” You became equally serious.
“I’m an idol, and that paparazzi just took our picture. We need to get out of here before he takes anymore.”
Your jaw drops, not expecting that. But now it all made sense: the private dates, the reluctancy to meet his friends (or should you not say groupmates), his need to wear a facemask out. He was trying to protect you both from scandal! Though, despite the seriousness of the situation, you only had one question pop into your head.
“What’s the name of your group?” He looked at you in utter disbelief.
“It’s Tomorrow X Together, can we go now?” He quickly replied, and you nodded, eager to escape the man. Who knows how many pictures he’d taken?
Tumblr media
The news of your relationship broke on dispatch the next day, you were only glad that the pictures were flattering. You were more worried about how Soobin’s company would react to this, dating scandals were a serious thing in Korea and the two of you had been acting pretty coupley (there was no way that they could play you off as just friends).
Despite Soobin’s insistence, you were constantly online, keeping track of all the things they were saying about you, about him. You knew it probably wasn’t a good idea, but you just wanted to be prepared, if you knew what people said online then you could be prepared for them to say it to your face. You could only hope that you weren’t fired.
You weren’t mad at Soobin for not telling you, you wished that he had told you sooner but you understood why he didn’t. How would you have reacted if you knew from the beginning he was an idol, you imagined it was quite refreshing for someone to treat him like a normal person for a change. And you would continue to, it didn’t matter that he was famous now.
Whilst there were some kind comments, congratulating him on his relationship, you found yourself more focused on the negative ones, about him and you. You didn’t like this at all, how it took only a relationship to make negative comments about people’s appearances and character, even threatening death. Reading comments about how they were burning their TXT albums just because of this was so disheartening, but you supposed it got rid of the fake fans anyway.
When you went back to work, everything had changed. Sure, you got a few stares when you started working there because you were a foreigner, but now it was just glares. Some of them stayed nice, talking to you, pitying you, but a large majority just despised you for no reason. It made your work life so much harder. Fortunately, your boss seemed to sympathise with you and did not give you any notice of firing.
Whilst it was bearable at the beginning, week after week of negativity began to build up until you couldn’t take it anymore. It was constantly on your mind to a point that you thought about it when you first woke up and went to bed, any time that you got to spend with Soobin was heavily monitored and was mostly spent dealing with the fallout. To you, it just wasn’t working anymore.
You started blaming yourself, for being so persistent with the mask and going out more, and then you started blaming him for not telling you. You decided it would be just better for the two of you to break up, you’d tell him today. Right now, sat together.
“I think we should take some time apart,” You told him, attempting to stay calm, crying would make this worse.
“Y/N, we can get through this. Can we not hold on a little longer?” His eyebrow furrowed together, holding back tears.
“It’s just hard, maybe we can start talking again when this all dies down. I can’t even go to work without people making comments.”
“If that’s what you want. But I just want you to know that I really like you.”
“I really like you too, Soobin. I’m sorry.
“It’s okay.”
Tumblr media
It takes a month for things to go back to normal, and that month is miserable. It’s not only because of all the negative attention that you got, but also the fact that you broke up with Soobin. You regretted it as soon as you did it, how would that stop the hate? People already knew anyway, it wasn’t going to change anything! All it did was make you feel more alone.
Day after day you moped around after work, spending all your time buried in case files and eating ramen in your room. Eunwoo would come and try and cheer you up, you’d watch dramas together and she’d crack some jokes. You would only smile momentarily before falling back into your pit of despair. You were currently watching an equally depressing drama, so at least you were feeling better watching them suffer too.
Eunwoo turned to you, pausing the screen. “Hey, I was watching that!” You complained.
“You need to talk to Soobin.” She states plainly.
“We broke up Eunwoo, I just have to go through the grieving stage like any other relationship.”
“Yeah but you still liked each other at the end of that one. It was different from the others. Why would you waste all that suffering you had together, surely that should make it even stronger.” She was passionate about this, flailing her arms about as she spoke.
“I don’t know, he’s probably moved on by now. There’s no point.”
“I doubt it, he’s probably moping like you. Wouldn’t it be nice to shove it in people’s faces that you’re happy, show it to those haters that they don’t bother you?”
“That wouldn’t be true, but yes I see your point.”
“Call him, please, just try and reach out.”
“I will, but don’t blame me if it doesn’t work out.”
“He’d be a fool to not take you back.”
Tumblr media
It was three in the morning when you woke to banging on your door. You knew it was Eunwoo, unless someone else had moved in with you in the past two hours without you knowing. It was making a right racket, she was definitely disturbing the neighbours. You hoped this wouldn’t cause a noise complaint.
“Y/N open this door right now!” You heard Eunwoo yelling from the other side of the door.
“I’m coming,” You huffed, still half asleep, “You better have a good reason for waking me up.”
You unlocked and open the door, not even being able to process Eunwoo before a phone is shoved in your face.
“Look at this, and read it.” She says sternly.
You squint at it, your eyes adjusting to the bright light coming out of the phone. You read the headline in bold: “TXT’s Soobin declares that he is in a happy relationship”. Your immediate reaction is that he’s moved on super quickly, but then you begin reading the article and a small smile comes to your face.
When you had left Soobin, his company hoped to prevent the scandal from rising by saying you had broken up for some damage control. By saying this, he had gone against his company and could be punished quite severely, maybe even be kicked out of the group (though you doubted he would). You knew what this meant, he still wanted to be with you. He would risk it all just for you. You smiled, grabbing your phone from the bedside table. Opening your text messages you send one to him, just a simple: Thank you.
Tumblr media
It was less than a week later when you met up with Soobin. You had been texting nonstop ever since that night, and you had been reconnecting, in fact, maybe you could classify this meet-up as a date. You hoped it was, and you hoped this meant good things for your future relationship with him. Today would be a good day, you knew it.
“Hey, Y/N,” He smiled when you arrived at his apartment, immediately wrapping his arms around you, “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too.” You say, burying your face into his neck.
Separating after a moment together, the two of you sat down at a table, it all felt very formal. You supposed it was because you hadn’t seen each other for so long, but you hoped you could become more comfortable around each other. You desperately wanted things to go back to normal, to the better days.
“How have you been?” He asked, almost too scared to.
“Honestly, awful. I shouldn’t have broken up with you, Soobin. That was stupid of me.” You were upfront, taking Eunwoo’s advice.
“I’ve hated every moment of it too.” He gave you a soft smile.
“Surely it’s a sign then.”
“What, a sign to get back together?”
“Don’t you think we should?”
“I don’t know… now that I think about it, I got so much more sleep when we weren’t dating.”
“Well, if that’s what you feel like, I’ll just go.”
You jokingly got out of your seat, Soobin following you and stopping you shortly before the door. He places his hands on your waist, gently turning you around and pressing you against the door. Your arms slowly travelled up until they wrapped around his neck, he leaned closer and closer to you. Your faces were so close together at this point they were basically touching, his lips not far away from yours.
Closing the distance you gently pressed your lips to his. It was sweet, like your first and you both pulled away grinning. His eyes were in the crescent moons you loved so much, and you realised you never wanted to stop seeing them.
“What does this mean then, for us?” You asked, your grin still plastered on your face.
“I guess this means we’re dating again, no takebacks this time.” He smiled, and you couldn’t be any happier.

It wasn’t just any other day for you, it was your final year in school, then you graduated. Except this was the third school you had been at, and with your family constantly moving, it wasn’t set in concrete that you’d even be staying here. Even so, you approached the school with the same positive attitude you always did.
The following week was a whirlwind, and you were quickly acquainted with the social climate of the school, in fact, it seemed like that there was a united hatred for one person: ‘The Club Killer’. You learned this very quickly, when attempting to join some extracurriculars, and finding how wary they were of new arrivals.
It turns out that there is one student that ruins the fun of these clubs, hence the name, usually because he was too good at the activity in question. It must be a blessing and a curse to be him, being so talented at so many things, but it ending up backfiring on you. You felt bad for him, you wanted to help him. So, you decided to look into him a little more.
You find out quickly who it is, Jeon Jungkook, also in his final year. He seemed well-meaning, a little reserved but you could tell he was passionate about all the things he tried out for. You wondered if there was one he had a particular affinity for, one that he wanted to be in the most. So being the totally non-creepy person you are, you tailed him for a few days (only to find out what he liked), and it helped that he was in a lot of your lessons.
By the end of the week, you had come to a resounding conclusion, he had a passion for Taekwondo, and that you needed to help him get in. You wondered if they gave him the same issue, fearing of his reputation, but you thought that they would let him in anyway. The club had been declining in members recently, and he could save it from disbanding. Perhaps he hadn’t asked yet, perhaps he needed an extra push.
Tumblr media
You still hadn’t gotten the courage to talk to Jungkook. You supposed it was because you were intimidated by him slightly, as if it were not for his reputation you imagined he would be quite popular. After all, it seemed Jungkook was quite a handsome man. Still, you were mad at yourself, how could you let this hold you back from befriending him, he just looked so lonely and you wanted to help him out.
Thinking, you continue your way back home, cutting through the shady alley like you usually did. You knew it wasn’t the safest of options, but you hadn’t been attacked yet and it saved a lot of time on your walk home. However, today you weren’t so lucky. You were thrown onto your back, the contents of your bag spilling all over the floor. The group stood above you, smiling menacingly, sending shivers down your smile. You were never walking this route back again.
“Well, well, well, look what we have here?” God was this man cliché, if you weren’t in a life or death situation, maybe you would have scoffed a little.
“Look we’ll make it easier for you, give us all your money and you won’t get hurt…” The smaller of the two threatened.
Fumbling through your bag, hands shaking, you managed to grab ahold of your wallet and began pulling out the wads of cash.
“Don’t give them the money.” A voice yelled from the street, not far from you. The voice sounded vaguely familiar? Were you saved? You turned, it was Jungkook.
“Let them go, Muho.” Jungkook stepped into the street, he was outnumbered, and it wasn’t like you could help.
“Not going to happen, you aren’t scaring me with your shitty arm.” He smirked, there was some tension between them.
“Are you sure?” A threat spilled out of Jungkook’s mouth, “Maybe the police would like to hear about it?”
“Shit Muho, we’ve gotta go!” The man’s minion tugged at his arm, and with one last menacing glare, and a few more threats and they were gone.
“Are you okay?” Jungkook asked, concernedly helping you up off the ground.
“Yeah, I’m fine... How do you know him?” You ask, your curiosity getting the better of you.
“I used to do Taekwondo with him, until I got an injury and had to give it up. I haven’t seen him in a long time.” Jungkook reminisced, getting a far off look in his eyes.
“But I don’t see you in the Taekwondo club, you should join. Don’t let a past injury hold you back.” You say, getting up and gathering your things.
“Thank you, by the way, for saving me.” You thank, sheepishly.
“It’s fine, you’d have done the same thing.”
“I’ll see you around.”
Tumblr media
You got to know Jungkook pretty well in the following week, being one of the only people not fazed by his reputation. You had managed to convince Jungkook to try out for the Taekwondo Club, after days of constant persuading and he finally gave in. You knew he could do it, that’s why the two of you were now stood in front of a large group of judgemental eyes, and Jungkook was about to give a demonstration.
“Show me what you can do.” Chisoo, the leader of the club, said, gesturing towards the mat.
You stood at the side, watching Jungkook as he perfectly performed a beautiful Taekwondo routine, ending in a dynamic finish. You imagined it would have been more exciting with another person involved, but you admired the beauty of the art either way. In return for his excellent performance, he was rewarded with an enthusiastic applause.
Chisoo then turned to you, “Alright show me what you’ve got.” He didn’t think you were also trying out?
“Umm, sorry… this must be some misunderstanding. I’m here to support Jungkook, the only role I would want in this club is to help out with some stuff.”
“What do you mean by stuff?” Chisoo raised his eyebrows sceptically.
“Do you mean like a manager?” Junyeon, a student in the year below asked cheerfully.
“But they don’t know anything about Taekwondo.” Another member, Seungmin, responded.
Chisoo sighed, “I’ll take you both, we just might need the two of you to carry on this club.”
It stings a little that the two of you got in based on a technicality, but at least you were in. Besides, Chisoo was right. There was under ten of you on the team, you really needed all the help you could get. And they would get it, with you as their manager what could go wrong?
“We won’t disappoint you.” Jungkook bowed in gratitude, and you hurriedly followed him.
“Yeah, I’ll show you that I won’t be a burden to the team.”
“I hope that you will, after all, we’re all relying on you now, anyway.”
Tumblr media
Over the following weeks, the two of you slowly become more integrated into the Taekwondo club. You get to know the interesting, but few members, and their personalities. After all, you were their ‘manager’ now, so you had to tend to their needs, whether you wanted to or not. It was awkward, and you made some mistakes along the way, but you finally seemed to get the hang of it.
There were now several members of the group that you got along with, other than your friendship with Jungkook, and you realised that you were better at making friends than you initially thought. Though, still with these new friendships, you were still closest to Jungkook. Spending more time with him made you realise how thoughtful and caring he actually was, if it wasn’t made obvious on your first meeting.
Other than Jungkook, there were also Junyeon and Seungmin, who were key members of the Taekwondo club. Two of them were original members, having been the ones to join it with leader Chisoo when they first created the club in their first year. Though it was sad to see the numbers dwindling over the years. Luckily, the two were pretty welcoming, Junyeon being a ball of sunshine, and Seungmin being stern but ultimately happy about the two of you joining.
Chisoo was the only one you had yet to crack, his cold and demanding demeanour building up a wall between him and the other members. However, you had a feeling that over time he would warm up to you both, he was definitely a big softy on the inside. You just hadn’t had time to crack him yet, but you would eventually.
Unfortunately, despite your days of training being fun, you were interrupted today with a posted notice being thrust upon the door. You looked at the lined paper, the writing having been hastily drawn upon with no real care, and it seemed that the message had been given in the same regard, and it wasn’t something you were looking forward to.
It read: Due to the lack of members within the Taekwondo club, there is a threat that the club will have to be closed. This may be done to combat the lack of space for other clubs, though this order will be reversed if there is a sudden spike in the amount of members in the club.
It was like they were teasing you, even though you already knew that your group was in small demand. But now it had become urgent, you were on a time limit, and unless you could all manage to convince five people to join the club, you lost your long-lasting club to something else which really wasn’t ideal.
But you weren’t giving up, after all, you were their manager.
Tumblr media
You had spent day after day brainstorming ideas for any sort of way to save the Taekwondo club, but every effort seems to backfire. There’s advertising it to more people, but they usually get put off by the intensive training and the fact that Jungkook joined. You also attempted to try to persuade the headmaster to let the club continue, but he wasn’t having it either.
The idea you eventually went with was actually due to Jungkook, who you had decided that was the light of your life. And it was eventually modified by you into something more attainable. Jungkook had suggested modifying Taekwondo for the modern-day, which you had eventually decided to combine with dance. You spent days attempting to choreograph a routine that included Taekwondo moves and were relentlessly practising it.
It was funny to see Junyeon and Seungmin attempt to be light and delicate on their feet, whilst Jungkook was effortlessly the best. You thought he was perfect in every single way, and it was starting to become a problem. You couldn’t let your feelings intrude on work. After all, you had a club to help run.
Luckily, you didn’t spend too long before they had finally perfected the routine and you were ready to bring it to the entire school. You for one were excited, but it didn’t seem that the others had the same enthusiasm, maybe except Jungkook.
“What if they laugh at us?” Junyeon mumbled.
“At least you know you’ve tried everything, plus they’re a waste of your time if you laugh. But trust me, it looks really good. I bet it could persuade people to join.”
“You better hope this works, Y/N.” Chisoo grumbles, clearly out of his comfort zone.
“It will, I believe in Y/N!” Jungkook smiled cheerfully, flinging an arm around your shoulder casually.
You blush, but no one notices before it was time for the routine to start. The group begin to prepare, and you finally turn on the music. Standing to the side, you observed as a large group began to form at the sight of the Taekwondo group dancing, and soon they’re all clapping and dancing on the sidelines. Perhaps your plan had been more efficient than you had even planned it to be?
Tumblr media
Turns out the whole dance thing didn’t work, in fact, it just inspired this other group of students to start a Taekwondance group. A group that was now threatening your gym space, and was probably going to take over. You hated them with a passion, and you unironically glared at them when you passed them in the corridor. However, contrary to popular belief, you hadn’t given up yet.
So with the new notice scrunched up in your hand, and with the rage of a thousand suns, you stormed your way to the headmaster’s office, the rest of the Taekwondo club trailing behind you (actually it was more like them chasing after you, as they didn’t think this was a good idea, and it probably wasn’t. But what else did you have to lose?)
“Y/N, please can you reconsider this?” Chisoo attempted to quell your rage.
“Too late now, we’re already here.” You say, barging into the office with no attempt to knock.
“What are you all doing here!” Principal Kim’s eyes widen in surprise.
“We’re here because you’re not shutting down our club.”
“You have no control over that, Y/N.” He remains calm, despite your pushing.
“You haven’t even heard my case. Listen, the Taekwondo club is important, more important than the Taekwondance club, and the art club. It’s part of our culture, and it’s here to stay. You can’t disband us!” You say indignantly.
“What Y/N means to say is, please can you give us one last chance to prove ourselves. Anything?” Jungkook attempts to soothe the storm you caused.
He stands there pondering, until he gives a deep sigh. “You have one last chance, I was approached by our rival school asking for a Taekwondo competition between our schools. I was going to say no, but I’ll let them know it’s a yes. If you win, the club can stay, if you lose then you’re gone for good.”
Everyone happily accepts the principal’s challenge, except Jungkook who goes unusually quiet, you notice.
“Are you okay, Jungkook?” You ask, slightly concerned.
“Y/N, our rival school is Muho’s school. I don’t know if I can face him again!”
Tumblr media
Storming out of the school building and onto the courtyard, you had never seen Jungkook this distressed. He was such a calm and happy-go-lucky person that when you saw him in distress, it rubbed off on you pretty quickly. You knew he didn’t like Muho but you didn’t know it was this bad.
“Jungkook, are you okay?” You run after him, “I’m sure you can beat him, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“It’s not that, it’s just… he gets in my head so easily. The last time I went up against him, the consequences weren’t so good on my part.” You could tell he was hiding a lot of pain, and you knelt down beside him, rubbing his back comfortingly.
“Do you want to talk about it? Will it make you feel better?” You ask gently.
“It’s just… he goes to such lengths to win. The last time we went up against each other, our match was cancelled because I had an injury. And when I went to a different doctor, I found out I had nothing wrong with me and that he paid off the other doctor to get me out of the competition.”
“Sounds to me like he was scared by you. You’re good at this, you have a natural talent for it. He was probably intimidated by you, and didn’t want to lose. You’re way better than him in every single way, don’t let that bastard get inside your head. When you’re fighting, just block him out and think of something else.”
“Thank you, Y/N, For everything.” He said, turning his head to you. He was close, your mouths just breaths away from each other. “Without you, I wouldn’t have any friends, or any hobbies.”
“I’m just doing what should be done, you shouldn’t be treated like that.” You give him a soft smile.
He gives you one back, leaning forward and pressing a gentle peck on your lips, leaving you flustered and blushing.
“Still, thank you. I owe you.”
Tumblr media
The day of the competition is tense. The rules were simple, five of ours vs five of theirs. It shouldn’t be too bad, they were all talented, and in the weeks following your deal, they practiced harder than you had ever seen them practice. You couldn’t imagine any of the other kids competing against them and winning, but maybe you were biased.
Jungkook went up last, the other four competing before him. And as the matches went on, it seemed that you had very much underestimated the other school. By the time it was Jungkook’s game, you were drawing two-two. Junmyeon, unfortunately, lost his match only slightly, but Chisoo and Seungmin came out with the victories. It all relied on Jungkook.
The match was intense, Muho giving verbal jabs at every turn, and the two being well-matched fighters. But you could tell that Jungkook was holding back, he could do so much more but he was held back by Muho’s mental game.
“Remember, Jungkook, zone him out!” You yell from the sidelines.
And with your words spurring him on, he won. You won, and Taekwondo was saved. Muho could kiss your ass! All that was left to do now was to celebrate, and you all knew the best way how to celebrate: food! After all, these athletes were tired out from all their winning.
Tumblr media
Eating was one of your favourite activities, and it was made better by your company. You had ordered enough food to fill you up for days, and honestly, you needed a break from being too full. Deciding to get some air, you made your way outside after telling the group, and sat down on a nearby bench.
You sighed, just letting the feeling of finally winning settle in. You had all done it, team effort! (More them than you, but you would take credit anyway). You could just relax a bit, it didn’t matter anymore about the amount of members, it just mattered about talent- what it should have from the beginning.
“I’m not interrupting you, am I?” A voice sounded, interrupting you from your daze: Jungkook.
“Hey,” You smile, “No, I just needed some time to just digest everything.”
“What the win, or the food?” He grinned.
“Both.”
You smile at each other, returning to a comfortable silence, which Jungkook interrupts again.
“Thank you, without you, I wouldn’t have won.”
“That’s not true, but I will take credit for it if you insist.”
“It’s just, we’ve spent so much time together recently, and you make me feel different compared to everyone else. I just want you to know that, I like you. If I haven’t already made it painfully obvious.” He smiles, you smile.
“I like you too, if I also hadn’t made it obvious.”
“What should we do about that then?”
You both grinned, meeting in the middle for a long, sweet kiss. You can feel him smile, breaking away before pecking you on the lips again.
“We should probably head inside, before they come out and find us like this. We wouldn’t hear the end of it from Junyeon.”
“Can’t wait to stuff myself full of food.”
“Maybe we can do that sometime, alone.”
“I’d like that.”
“I’d like that too.”

It was strange, to feel the cool breeze against your skin. You attempt to pull the duvet over you again, but you were surprised to find it was nowhere to be found. Slowly opening your eyes, you were sprawled out on an unfamiliar bed, the room empty with not a person in sight. This was not what you were expecting.
You were expecting to wake up next to someone, someone you went to university with. Someone you had been dating for the past two months, named Minho. He was popular around the university, known for being a bit of a player, which was why you were surprised when he developed an interest in you.
After going on a couple of dates, you found him charming and funny. Though going on more and more dates, you suddenly came to realise that you knew nothing about this man despite spending so much of your time with him. Though you had already fallen too deep, and despite your better judgement, he took you back to his room and made love to you. Except it wasn’t love, and he was about to make that abundantly clear.
Wandering through the apartment, still just wearing a t-shirt, you finally found Minho in the kitchen.
“Hey,” You smile, “I missed you in bed.”
“Get out.” He says bluntly,
“I’m sorry?” You ask in confusion.
“You heard what I said.” He says callously.
“But I thought you liked me. I thought that was special to you.” You hold back tears.
“I’ll be honest. You were just some bet I needed to win, and it wasn’t too hard. You were about as easy to fuck as they come.” He grins sadistically.
The longer you stare at that cocky grin, the more that the pain and hurt morphs into a new form of fury. You fume at him, grabbing your clothes and haphazardly putting them on. He seems amused at your anger, rather than feeling any sort of sympathy. How could this man be so uncaring, especially after you spent so much time together? How could he do things to you, and say they mean nothing.
You hold back the tears, replacing them with something different. A taste for revenge, and it was going to be sweet. He was going to regret the day he did this to you, you just didn’t know why he was going to yet.
Storming out fully dressed with your belongings, you head for the door, calling your threat, no, promise, towards Minho.
“You’ll regret this, what you’ve done! Just you wait, you fucking monster!”
He chuckles, “I’m sure I will.”
Little did he know, this was no empty threat.
Tumblr media
This was bad, this was very very bad. Surely you must be just reading this wrong, it’s not like you’d ever used one before, you’d never been in this situation before, you’d been smarter before. Looks like your luck had finally run out. You had no idea what to do, you had no idea how to deal with this! How were you supposed to be a parent when you hadn’t even got your degree yet? You’d just bring the child into debt.
You stare down at the test, its result is clear: positive. You pondered the options in your mind, adoption and abortion crossing your mind. Could you do these instead, or would you keep the child for yourself? Surely it would be impractical to keep a child at this stage of your life, kids were not an option for you.
In thinking of other options, you had thought of the other important thing: who were you going to tell? Were you going to tell anyone at all? Who could you tell? Could you tell your family about this? Definitely not. How were you supposed to explain that you had been tricked by some evil man, and now you were pregnant? No, you needed specialised help.
So there you were, outside your friend Lia’s apartment complex. She had always been your rock throughout everything, and you knew better than anyone that she’d have the answer to this situation. You waited patiently as she buzzed you in, and you raced to her apartment, she opens the door puzzled.
“You okay, you seem a little shaken?” She asks, but you don’t give her an answer, only slamming down the positive pregnancy test on the countertop. She looks down at it puzzled, before her eyes alight with rage.
“Don’t tell me that sorry excuse of a bastard got you pregnant?” She gritted her teeth.
“Oh Lia, I don’t know what to do!” You sniffled, holding back tears.
She immediately switched from being furious to the protective mother goose you knew her as best, this was definitely the best decision.
“You’re the only person that can decide what to do, it’s your body and your choice.” She took your hands comfortingly, giving you time to think.
“I don’t know if I can have a baby right now, Lia. Plus, what would I even say to him? Would he even have to be involved?” You stress.
“Well, I know for sure that he’d be paying child support. That man would be in debt to you for life.” She states matter-of-factly.
And then it hit you, the only way you would truly get this man back for his actions. The only way to hold him accountable. Is it petty to even consider this, is it morally right to bring a child in for that reason? Probably not, but you reason that you probably couldn’t go through with an abortion anyway.
“I think I’m going to keep the baby, Lia.” You finally come to your decision.
“Okay, if you need any help just let me know. I’m always here for you.”
“Thanks, Lia, that means a lot.”
Tumblr media
Today was the day. You had been building up to it mentally for weeks, and now that you knew that the test wasn’t faulty it seemed like the right time. So there you were, in your university cafeteria, about to announce to the evilest man in the world, that he was going to be a father.
You didn’t know how he was going to react, you didn’t even know if he would think it was real. All you knew was that you had to tell him, and putting off the confrontation wasn’t going to help anyone in this situation. You had to stop overthinking it, and just had to tell him. How hard can it really be?
Minho wasn’t alone, rather he was in a group of friends. This group of friends ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ as you approached, aware of the past the two of you shared. You attempted to disregard it, taking your stand when Minho smugly grinned at you. You were about to wipe that smirk right off his stupidly handsome face.
“Can I talk to you Minho, alone?” You ask firmly, standing your ground.
“No you can’t,” he replied immaturely, “Anything you want to say to me, you can say in front of my friends.”
You pondered for a second, do you really want to announce to his whole group of friends (and indirectly the university) that you were pregnant with Minho’s child? You had even brought the pregnancy test with you for proof, and dramatic effect.
“Are you sure,” You are kind and attempt to give him an out, “It might not be something you want your friends to hear?”
He chuckles, thinking he’s got some sort of hold over you. Little did he know, the tables had turned rather dramatically. “I think I can handle it,” He smirks.
“Okay then,” you take a deep breath, steadying yourself, “I’m pregnant.”
The whole table is quiet, staring out you intently. Minho’s jaw had almost dropped to the floor, staring at you in shock. He was like that for minutes before he finally shook himself out of his daze, still fully struggling to process what had just been said.
“How do I know this isn’t you trying to get back at me?” He finally retaliates.
You had prepared for this, pulling the positive test out of your pocket and placing it triumphantly on the table. Everyone’s eyes trailed down to the positive line indicating the truth of the situation. There was no way for him to get out of this now.
“Because I have proof.” You give him your own smirk, “Own up to your shit, dickhead.”
And without giving him a chance to respond any further, you walk out of the cafeteria, avoiding the feel of eyes following your back out. You couldn’t believe you had just done that, but you guess it saved everyone’s questions when your belly began to show in a couple of months. At least now, that man could take accountability for his actions, and you could get sweet revenge at the same time.
Tumblr media
It had been a couple of days since you had revealed the secret that had been weighing you down, and despite the burdens to come, you felt a whole lot lighter. Minho had yet to approach you about the revelation, and you assumed the next time you would talk to him would be in court over his child support payments. It was the best that way, anyway.
You were currently attempting to write one of the many essays you had due for one of your classes, sat in one of the many university cafes. You had resigned to only drinking a hot chocolate, trying to cut down on your caffeine intake in preparation for your impending child.
It was still strange to think that you were having a child. You hadn’t particularly envisioned having a child in your future, only having considered the possibility at all of you were in a long-term committed relationship. This was incredibly new and strange for you, and you hoped that this was the right choice for you to make.
Focusing on your laptop, you didn’t notice the figure standing in front of you, not until he pulled out the chair and sat across from you. You looked up, against all odds it was him, Minho. He seemed nervous, the first time you had ever seen him twiddling his fingers. This was very unlike him, why was he here?
“What are you doing here, Minho?” You ask harshly.
“Are you keeping the baby?” He questioned.
“I am, but why does that matter to you.”
“Well, I just wanted to know.”
“Well, now you know. Goodbye Minho.” You dismiss him.
“Do you seriously expect me to just go and do nothing? This is my child too.” He looks at you incredulously.
“I do expect you to go, because I want nothing to do with you. I want you nowhere near my child. The best thing you can do is pay child support.”
“I want to be involved with my baby. You can’t just do this alone.”
“And since when did you start to care about my wellbeing? Was that before or after you fucked me to win a bet, and then dumped me the next day?”
“That has nothing to do with my abilities at being a father.”
“I think it has to do with the sort of example you would be setting for your child.”
“What, are you going to tell a baby about it?” He scoffs, “It won’t even fucking understand you.”
“Look, just go back to your shitty dance practice, or whatever you’re doing now. I have nothing else to say to you.” You look down at your work again, ignoring the annoying presence in front of you.
“This isn’t the end of this conversation, Y/N. You should know by now, I don’t give up easily.”
Tumblr media
Despite the promise that Minho made, you didn’t hear anything from him for the next couple of days. It had been nice, being left to your own thoughts. You were doing this currently at your apartment, Lia having come over to watch some Netflix with you and eat some popcorn.
“You still haven’t heard from him then?” Lia asks, digging through her bowl of popcorn.
“No, but I’m not really surprised. The man doesn’t really do commitment.”  You reply, doing the same, scrolling through the variety of shows available.
“You never know, he could surprise you. Maybe he’ll approach you at uni and get down on one knee for you. Propose some sort of shotgun marriage.” Lia chuckles at her own joke.
“Well, I hope he’s good with rejection. Cause I’d rather cut off my finger than put some ring from him on it.”
“Well, he could always sow it back on if we put it in ice.” Lia muses.
As you continue with your interesting conversation, you get a buzz at your door. After running to the button, you find out that you had been delivered a package. It was interesting, mainly because you hadn’t ordered anything online, and your family haven’t told you they were sending any. Maybe they had forgotten to tell you?
After bringing it up, you place it on your countertop: studying it. Lia joins you, pondering as to what’s in it. The package is not small by any means, in opposition it is, in fact, quite big. The box is taped shut, the address label covering the top. You retrieve a pair of scissors from your kitchen drawer, slicing open the tape covering the box.
Opening you find two things: a letter, and then a collection of tissue paper covering the remainder of the gift. Despite desperately wanting to see what was underneath the paper, you were cautious as to what was part of this gift as you had no idea who it was from. So you opened the envelope, peering down at the contents within.
It read:
Dear Y/N,
You didn’t think that was the last of me, did you? I told you I was going to be involved. Take these as a peace offering. I hope we can move past the little incident we had for the good of our child.
Minho.
You scoff, how dare he call toying and playing with you a ‘little incident’, how dare he attempt to trivialise and demean your feelings. How dare he try and act like he’s any better than you after what he did.
Lia peeked over your shoulder, reading the small letter. She also scoffs, “What an arsehole, but I do want to know what he thinks can make up for what he did.”
“I know, I do too.” You say, beginning to pull out the tissue paper, revealing something unexpected.
Baby clothes. There were several of them, mainly gender-neutral but not shying away from other more feminine or masculine clothes either. They were nice, though you’d never admit that, but they weren’t enough. He’d have to do a lot better than that if he wanted anything to do with your child, not just spending some money.
Opening your phone, unblocking the number, you send one sentence just to see his response.
Stop sending me shit, I don’t want anything from you.
Tumblr media
You are harassed over texts for the next couple of days by Minho, he is persistent in attempting to talk to you again. And in order to finally have some peace and quiet, and being able to sleep at night without the buzzing from your phone, you agreed to meet up with him and sort this entire situation out once and for all.
So there you were, sat across from him in a nearby café. You were meeting where was convenient for you, you couldn’t care less how easy it was for him, it was your time he was wasting. You had ordered a tea, sipping on it impatiently whilst he stared at the ceiling. You were starting to get the tiniest bit annoyed.
“Are you going to finally talk to me, or are you going to keep staying quiet?” You snap.
“I want to be in the baby’s life.” He stated resolutely.
“On second thought maybe just keep your mouth shut.”
“I’m not kidding, Y/N. This is just as much my child as it is yours.”
“You’re not carrying the baby, Minho. I also wasn’t a massive dickhead who played around with another person’s feelings.”
“Oh my God, will you just shut up about that? You act all high and mighty like you’re better than me, then act immature like this.”
“What you did and what I’m doing are nowhere near comparable, Minho.”
“I don’t really care about the past, Y/N. I want to move on from it, and talk about the future.”
“Well, you have no right to decide that for me. You can’t just waltz back into my life, without not even fucking apologising for what you did, and expect everything to be okay.”
“Well, I’m sorry. But it’s not going to make any difference, I still did what I did. That’s not going to change, but I can change for the future. Why can’t you give me that chance?”
“Why can’t you just stop being so persistent?”
“Because I won’t stop, not when a baby is involved. Especially when it’s mine.”
Reaching a stalemate, the two of you stare at each other intensely, neither of you wanting to break first. It was clear that this conversation was going nowhere, and maybe you should try and become the better person in the situation. Surely it couldn’t be too painful, to see Minho for the rest of your life. Maybe it would make it even more painful seeing how unbothered by it all he is.
“Fine,” You relent, “but you’re going by my rules. Not by some you just made up.”
“If that’s what I have to do, then so be it.”
“I have a doctor’s appointment and ultrasound next Friday. I’ll text you the details.” You got up from your chair, not giving him a chance to respond before leaving the place altogether. Your tea, cold.
Tumblr media
The dreaded day had come. It was the day of your doctor’s appointment, and unfortunately, you wouldn’t be alone. You had an ultrasound today and an overall check-up. Not only was the entire setting nerve-wracking, but the company was going to worsen your nerves even more. You wondered how he was even going to react today, or if he would even show up.
However, you were surprised to see him arrive on time, with a relaxed smile on his face. At least someone was going to enjoy today, you certainly weren’t going to. The two of you sat in awkward silence until your name was finally called by your doctor. Doctor Park.
“How are you doing today?” She asked you, helping you onto your seat, preparing you for your ultrasound. “I see you brought someone with you today.”
You had been to one previous appointment alone, so you were already friendly with her. However, she didn’t know the extent of the situation, with you only offhandedly mentioning that you were not currently seeing the father.
Minho seemed to capitalise on your silence, introducing himself and shaking her hand, “I’m Minho, the father.”
She nods at him politely, beginning her explanation and readying your ultrasound. It isn’t long before the room becomes quiet, and the faint heartbeat of your unborn child fills the room. The shaky outline of a small foetus appears on the screen, and Minho’s eyes widen.
He watches in awe, observing the littlest of movements, the smallest of smiles appearing on his face. You had never seen him so quiet intentionally, and you swore, very faintly, that you could see his eyes slightly watering. You didn’t really take him to be an emotional guy, especially as he had so callously toyed and played with you.
You tuned back in, listening to Dr Park’s info dump on your child’s current wellbeing. Long story short, you were about 5-6 weeks pregnant, and your baby was developing well and healthily. You watch your baby, eyes sparkling with joy at the thought that you were creating this child this very second. It always felt more special the more you thought of it.
It wasn’t long before the appointment ended, and Doctor Park told you that she would email you her next check-up. You actually couldn’t believe how smoothly it had gone, and how little you had actually talked to Minho. You were surprised how gentle he was actually being with the situation. Maybe he was taking it more seriously than you were giving him credit for, but that didn’t mean you were loosening up on him.
“That was nice.” He smiled serenely, “Thanks for letting me come, can I come to the next one?”
“Sure, if you’re exactly like how you were today.” You mumble. You didn’t mention the crying, or his change in demeanour. You really didn’t have the energy to start a fight today, resigning to just giving in. Maybe it would be easier to deal with if you just lay down.
“Thanks,” He says, “I’ll see you then.”
He doesn’t bother to say goodbye, leaving you stunned in the hospital waiting room. Maybe next week wouldn’t be such a good idea.
Tumblr media
You didn’t see or hear from Minho until your next appointment. The appointment went similar to last time, with him arriving on time in a chipper mood, and limited interaction. He was just as quiet, and you were just as bewildered. However, you would be a fool to just think that this check-up would be as smooth as the last.
After the appointment ended, Minho wasn’t quick to leave like he was last time. He actually answered a phone call, perhaps from someone that he should have answered to in front of you, especially due to your interesting circumstances. This man wasn’t really helping himself, and you weren’t going to stand for it.
“Hey baby, yeah I am looking forward to seeing you soon. I’m on my way now don’t worry, I’ll see you then. Bye.” He smirks, hanging up the phone and it makes your blood boil. How dare he move on to toying with someone else so easily.
“I hope you’re not betting on fucking them too.” You can’t help yourself, a snide remark slipping out.
“I don’t see how my life is any of your business.”
“You avoided the question.”
“You avoided mine.”
“Your life became my business when you got me pregnant. Don’t want to make that same mistake again, do you?”
“If you must know, I’ve been being extra careful ever since I became aware of your… situation.”
“Oh good for you. I see this person means nothing to you then.”
“Why would you assume that?”
“Because you care about nobody except yourself. When we began that sham of a relationship, I had not heard that you were in any previous relationships, and it’s the same now. In fact, you were pretty well-known for getting around.”
“I don’t see how that should matter. That doesn’t change who I am as a person.”
“Maybe it should, you might actually be a decent one then.”
“Aren’t you pleasant today? Look, whatever’s going on in my life stays between me and that person.”
“Well, that didn’t happen with me did it. You were happy to tell all your friends about it.”
“You were an exception.”
“Well that’s a slippery slope to fall down isn’t it.”
“Look. I don’t have time for you, I have to be somewhere else. Deal with your shit elsewhere.” He says nonchalantly, before once again leaving you in the hospital alone.
Tumblr media
Feeling disappointed with your recent interaction with Minho, you begin walking home. The walk back is familiar, you having walked it several times now, but you felt the need to linger a bit longer before you caught back up to reality again. Maybe you could have handled that situation better, but you didn’t want to think about that now.
Finally reaching your apartment, it’s a relief to finally collapse onto your sofa and have some nice peace and quiet. It was definitely something that you had been missing nowadays, but it seemed that everything today was a luxury.
However, your peace is interrupted quite suddenly when a buzz from the door sounds. You sigh, there isn’t a moment of silence in this apartment. It was probably Lia, coming to see how the appointment had gone. You couldn’t wait to disappoint her again, but when you arrived at the door you were greeted with quite a different sight. It was him.
You open the door abruptly, “What are you doing here Minho?” You ask, not giving him time to say hello.
He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He couldn’t seem to even catch his breath to talk, he put his hand out for pause. “Can you give me a minute? I just ran here.”
“Why? It’s not like I asked you to.”
“I’m sorry. I want us to get along for the sake of our baby, but you make it very difficult for me.” He pants out, attempting to be well-meaning.
“I need you to be serious about this, Minho. There can’t be any fooling around.” You fold your arms in an attempt to be more intimidating.
“Am I not allowed to see other people though? I don’t get why seeing someone else is an issue for you.”
“It’s not that. You just don’t set a good example. You need to for our child.”
“Well, I think we both need to make more of an effort.”
“I’ve been making plenty of effort.”
“Stop making this difficult, okay, can you just let me know when the next appointment is?”
You nod, and he leaves shortly afterwards. What has gotten into him?
Tumblr media
With weeks passing by, the bump began to grow, until it became quite noticeable. Of course people had known from the beginning, but now that it was more than just a rumour, people were starting to talk about it. People finally had proof, and they were loving it. All the more fun for you, you guessed. That definitely wasn’t sarcasm.
You didn’t really mind the stares, which shocked a bunch of people. It was something easy to get used to, especially when you were expecting it. It was even easier to get used to the heckles and judgement that you got, especially from the jealous and rude people that populated your university.
“Hey, Y/N. Got room for any more babies up there?” Very original, definitely wasn’t something that you’d heard hundreds of times before. It was actually more disappointing that he couldn’t come up with something more original, at least then you’d have something to laugh about later. It was just an embarrassment on his part really, a grown man acting like a child. Not an uncommon sight really.
You didn’t pay notice to him, but it seemed like he was more persistent than the other dickheads, so he tried again.
“Fucking listen to me whore, you obviously have time for everyone else!” He was more aggressive this time, annoyed by your lack of action.
“What did you just say?” You heard a familiarly angry voice from down the corridor. It was Minho, was he trying to defend your honour? Not that he needs to with these opinions coming from a massive scumbag. It really meant nothing to you.
“Oh, nothing Minho.” He shits his pants, it was quite amusing to watch actually, you stifled back a laugh.
“Are you sure, that didn’t sound like nothing? Maybe you should apologise.” Minho notices your expression, and decides to play it up even more. Why did this man have to torture you?
Trembling, the bully turned to face you, “Sorry,” he mutters under his breath.
“That’s what you call an apology?” Ironic that Minho was calling out that apology, when his own were just as bad.
“Sorry for what I said.” Mumbles the bully, quickly retreating down the corridor with his friends.
“Let me know if they ever bother you again, you’ve got enough to deal with.” Minho gives a forced smile, before awkwardly walking away from you. Now wasn’t that an interesting conversation, and you didn’t even have time to reply to him.
Tumblr media
It’s been long since you’ve had any issues, a month went by and you went back to your boring life. The only new addition was that you were now pregnant, and had to deal with an annoyingly persistent Minho. You were surprised at how long he kept the ruse up for, but you finally admitted to yourself that he was actually serious about being in this child’s life. Lucky you, indeed.
Your relationship with Minho hasn’t improved, but that would be saying that you had any sort of relationship with him in the first place. Rather it just consisted of you tolerating him for a couple of hours each week, and in exchange, he leaves you alone for the rest of the time. It was very transactional between you.
You both wouldn’t define it as a friendly relationship, rather that the two of you are civil, making an effort to not kill each other. You both have a baby to raise soon anyway, it would be quite hard to do that if you were both constantly bickering.
In fact, this week you had an extra meeting with Minho. One that Minho was insistent on having, and one that you had been putting off for a while. Baby names. You didn’t see why it mattered, you always thought it’d be one of those things where you saw the baby’s face and had a sudden epiphany on the name. But maybe that was just you.
“What about Chris?”
“Isn’t your friend called Chris, because I’m not naming my child after those idiots you call friends?”
“My friend is called Chris, your right, but by your logic, that means Lia is off the table too.”
“Ah, but Lia is not an idiot. So it’s technically not.”
“I think you might be slightly biased.”
“I could say the same about you.”
“Why are you being so picky about names, anyway? They aren’t set in stone.”
“Our child has to live with their name for the rest of their life, it can’t be something stupid like ‘bookshelf’.”
“Why not? I actually quite like the ring of that, plus it’s gender-neutral. Works for everyone that way.”
“We’re really not going to get anywhere with this, are we.”
“No, we’re not. But we do have months to think of some good names. I certainly am.”
Tumblr media
University had gotten a lot quieter now that Minho had started defending you. So quiet, that you actually catch yourself contemplating if it would be more fun if people started harassing you. At least then when you went home, you could tell Lia of all the idiots you’d seen today. You were running out of things to talk about nowadays, and always landed on the topics of essays and exams. You were both too busy.
However, just because people had stopped saying those things to you, didn’t mean that you had let your guard down in any way. In fact, you would argue that you’re less trusting even though it has stopped, because at least then you knew who disliked you. Now it’s stopped, you don’t know which ones are acting fake anymore so they can avoid angering Minho.
Due to this, when you were walking down the corridor, with Lia, and were suddenly approached by a group of men that you would have never talked to in the past, your guard was as high up as it could be. You wondered what Minho’s friends could want to do with you, but you were slightly comforted that Minho was part of that group. At least then you’d know that he’d keep up his end of the deal.
“Hey, Y/N,” One of them said, you weren’t sure of it, but you think his name was Jisung. You could be wrong, but you swore that he looked quite apologetic.
“Hey…” You reply slowly, confused as to why they had started this conversation. Any other time that you walk into his friends, they’d not even acknowledge you. Maybe they were finally feeling bad? But that was too much of a stretch to believe.
“We just wanted to apologise to you, for what we’ve said to you before.” The oldest says, surprising you, though you couldn’t let them get away with it that easy.
“Really, well it doesn’t really matter now does it. It doesn’t really take back what you did. And it’s bold of you all to assume that I actually cared about your opinion of me in the first place.” You respond, Minho sighs.
“They’re trying to do something good here, Y/N.” Minho defends them.
“And I wonder who put them up to it.” You retaliate, “Am I supposed to feel grateful that they finally were forced to apologise for something they should have known to not do in the first place? Their apology is meaningless, just like my opinion of them. I don’t care what they have to say to me, just don’t act like you suddenly feel sorry for what you said.”
“You never make things easy do you.” Minho remarks.
“Surely you should know that by now. See you around, Minho.” You nod in the other’s general direction, before carrying on down the corridor with Lia towing behind you.
“You are ruthless, you know that right?”
“Ah, but’s what’s the fun in not being. Might as well take advantage of the power that I have right now. It’s only temporary for them anyway.”
“Fair enough, but I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of one of your insults.”
“Thanks, Lia. That makes me feel much better.”
Tumblr media
Being pregnant, it’s not very often that you get out much anymore. It’s not like you can really drink and enjoy it, neither can you really dance with the added weight. So you had no idea how you had been convinced to attend the party you were currently cooped up at, and you had no idea why you were invited in the first place.
Lia had been the one to suggest it at first, and you were very much against it. However, when she mentioned that it was a party at Minho’s you became interested very quickly. This wasn’t because you liked him, or wanted to see him, rather you wanted to observe if he really had made an effort to change. It wasn’t like you weren’t going to allow him to get drunk, you weren’t going to hold that over his head at a party, but you wanted to see what he was doing about how he approached people.
In a roundabout way, you were being nosy on if he was seeing anyone. You framed this as saving some innocent person from being caught in another one of his insidious bets, but really you wanted to see how he approached his love life now that he was an expecting father. So you were there with Lia, faking amusement whilst Lia got progressively more drunk.
It wasn’t long before you were off to the side like a wallflower, whilst Lia was being grinded on by one of Minho’s friends. You kept an eye out for Minho, but you couldn’t really find him anywhere, which was odd with him being the host of the party, though this wasn’t actually his house (he had hosted it at his friends, cause his friend was swimming in the money by the looks of it).
Suddenly, you heard a scream coming from a nearby corridor, and being the only sober person present you immediately went to go and check out what the racket was, after all, that person could be hurt. Though as you traipsed up the stairs, you found a drunk and giddy Minho, crawling around on the floor with his legs too shaky to stand.
You helped him to his feet, chastising him. But drunk Minho was having none of it.
“You aren’t the boss of me you know, I can do whatever I like.” You stated, slurring his words.
“And I think you would like to go home.” Surprisingly he was easy to persuade and it wasn’t long before you managed to half carry him back to his apartment. You were quite impressed that he had managed to not throw up on you the entire time, but as soon as he fumbled his keys into his door, he was spewing into the toilet. You could tell he was a veteran, the way he held it in.
Finally finishing, he looked up, still as giddy as he was before. “You’re so nice you know, walking me all the way back home… you could be having soooo much fun right now but you’re here with me.” He giggled.
“I doubt it would be fun for me, I am sober after all.” You reply, amused by him.
“Oh yeah, you can’t drink, can you. Why did you come then? Did you want to see me?” He waggled his eyebrows.
“Oh god, you’re not a flirty drunk, are you? You should know, there’s no chance of this happening. Especially seen as though you have dried up sick smeared around your mouth.”
“You know, I did like you when I asked you out. I didn’t really start thinking about the bet till near the end. I’ve been thinking about us recently… and our baby. I think we should give them a really nice name. Something pretty…”
“Like what?”
“Like, Poppy. For if it’s a girl.”
“I’m sure we can think about it. Maybe we can talk about this when you’re sober.”
“But I want to talk about it now.” He strops like a child.
“Right, I’m going to get you water. You stay over that toilet, I can’t deal with you right now.” You say, disappearing to the kitchen, you were starting to feel drained and you could deal with an argument. But when you arrived back with that glass, you were surprised to see Minho passed out on the bathroom floor. Looks like your job had just been made a lot easier.
However, with him passed out on the floor, you didn’t feel safe leaving him in his apartment alone, and with his sudden request, you were eager to hear his explanation in the morning. After yanking him into his bed, you retire to his sofa, and promise to check on him the next morning.
Tumblr media
You woke up the next morning to the smell of eggs frying, and the sizzling of a pan. You also feel an awful pain in your back, and realised you weren’t in your bed, and you weren’t in your apartment. On second thought, maybe sleeping on the couch wasn’t the best idea. Also, maybe you shouldn’t have stayed to see if Minho was okay, cause he seemed to be absolutely fine, whistling away whilst cooking his breakfast.
“How the hell do you not have a hangover?” You grumble, causing Minho to jump.
“Family genes.” He shrugs his shoulders, “Plus it helps when I get a good night’s sleep.”
“Well at least one of us did.” You moaned, rubbing your back with annoyance.
“Thank you, by the way, for bringing me home last night. You didn’t have to do that, especially when you’re pregnant and I’m the reason for it.”
“It’s fine, I would have done it for anyone as drunk as you were. Plus I needed to get away from the awful sight of your friend making moves on Lia.”
“If it makes you feel any better, I do not remember anything from last night.” That meant he didn’t know of his confession, and what did that mean? Was it just something drunk and meaningless, or was he really telling the truth when he said he used to like you?
“I wouldn’t expect you to, I don’t know how much you need to drink to be at the level that you were.”
“Trust me, it’s not much. I’m secretly a bit of a lightweight.”
“Well, you certainly are a pain to deal with on a night out then.”
“Look, I can’t thank you enough for taking me home. I hope this doesn’t impact what we agreed. Just because I got drunk doesn’t mean I’m not serious about this.”
“Don’t worry. It’s a party, I can’t expect anyone not to get drunk. I was the only sober one there. Maybe, just don’t be at that level next time.”
“So we’re cool then?”
“We will be when you make me breakfast.”
“You drive a hard bargain, you know that?”
Tumblr media
Three months pass by fast, each day seeming boring and annoying You progressively became more frustrated as you were able to do less and less stuff, but luckily you had some help along the way. Minho had really stepped up in the following months, especially when it came down to his attitude. You actually grew to kind of respect him again, though you’d never tell him that.
You don’t know when he redeemed himself, but you could think of a handful of times where he didn’t need to be there when he was. Maybe he was more serious about being a good father than you thought, and you should give him a little more credit than you usually do. You finally realised, that maybe he would be a good father to your child.
Maybe the first time you felt this way was when he rescued you from having to drive to a different town to collect a parcel meant to be delivered to your door. That town was over two hours away, and he arrived at your door with a smile on his face, and helped you to open the box that was important for your child’s future. Maybe it was the baby supplies that were exciting him, but you couldn’t help but wonder if it was something different.
Or maybe it was the time that Minho insisted that the two of you went shopping for baby toys together. He giggled at all the strange things that babies could play with, flipping through the pop-up books and adding them to the shopping trolley. The most surprising of all was that when it came to the end, Minho insisted on paying for the full trolley (even though you insisted on splitting), and helped you unpack it from your car.
Or maybe it was the time that Minho came over to your house with an at-home ultrasound, and the two of you sat together for two hours listening to your baby’s heartbeat. Even though all that time had passed, it didn’t feel like it, and it was so magical to be able to finally hear your child without the presence of a doctor.
Or maybe it was that time that the baby kicked, and Minho insisted on touching your belly just to feel it kick again. It ended with him sitting there talking to your belly for an hour, whilst you listened to him ramble about the strangest of things.
After all these events occurred, it made you wonder what this meant for the two of you. Was Minho doing this due to a mixture of guilt, and the need to be a good father? Or was he, god forbid, doing this for another reason, and was that reason him caring about you and your wellbeing. You try and push those thoughts to the back of your mind, after all, he’s hurt you before and he could do it again. But maybe this time was different, and you were okay with being hurt a second time.
Tumblr media
Minho had come over today, the two of you deciding to try and sort out the issue of names again. With Minho not remembering your previous conversation on names, with him having been extremely intoxicated at the time, it seemed like you still hadn’t made any headway when deciding on the name for your child.
However, with an hour having passed with no progress having been made, the two of you resigned to just watching something on Netflix and to think of names whilst watching. It was strange, doing an activity not related to the baby together, you hadn’t done anything like this since you had broken up. It felt like déjà vu doing this together again, but it also didn’t feel as strange as you expected it to.
Watching the film, it suddenly became apparent that you were being watched. With the only other person in the room being Minho, you fought the urge to look back at him. Why was he not watching the movie? Why was he staring at you? Was he also wondering why the two of you were doing this? Acting like a couple again?
“This is nice, you know.” He announced, interrupting your thoughts.
“What is?” You ask, not daring to hear the answer.
“Doing things like this together. I’ve missed spending time like this with you.”
“Why, Minho? We haven’t done anything like this since we dated.”
“And is that such a bad thing, I’d happily date you again.”
“What?” You say, confused and in shock.
“I said I’d date you again. I have feelings for you.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Yes, I do. You don’t get to decide how I feel, Y/N.”
“You don’t really like me, Minho. You just want to because I’m having your baby.”
“Why would you say that?” He says, hurt for the first time.
“Because you can’t. You never have and you never will.”
“Ok.” He says, rendering the room silent.
But you were right, he couldn’t. You couldn’t go through this again, the agony of liking Lee Minho. You couldn’t focus on things like this, not when you were having a baby soon. You had someone more important to be looking out for, and you couldn’t have any distractions. He couldn’t like you anyway, Minho didn’t like anyone like that. He couldn’t, you couldn’t.
Tumblr media
Following Minho’s confession, the two of you go back to the awkwardness that clouded you both previously. It seemed that you both didn’t want to talk about the lingering confession, and what it posed for the future. But you attempted to, you had to. After all, there was only one more month until you gave birth to your baby. You needed to focus on that.
Things were getting more and more difficult for you, nowadays. It was hard to even walk, with your swollen feet, so you spent most of your days inside, with Lia coming over to drop off the uni work that you missed. It sat there, piled up on your desk gathering dust. You’d get around to it, after you’d pushed out a watermelon. You had more pressing issues to deal with.
And it seemed the world wanted you to get on with it, as whilst sitting watching Netflix, you feel the worst pain that you’ve ever felt in your life. It was like you were being stabbed in your gut, over and over again, and then your intestines were getting pulled from your body and shoved back in. You were going into labour, and fucking hell did it hurt.
Grabbing your phone in a panic, the first thing you do is call Minho. What were you supposed to do, it was supposed to be a month before this happened? You weren’t prepared for this!
“Minho, I’m going into labour!” You half-yell down the phone, as soon as he picks it up.
“Wait your serious, really?! But it’s a month early.”
“Yes I’m serious, I need to go to the hospital, now!”
“Okay, okay… calm down. I’ll be on my way, I’ll call Lia and let her know what’s going on.”
Not long after, Minho collects a screaming you, and guides you to the car. You spend an agonising time in the car which involves you almost breaking Minho’s hand as he attempts to drive. Needless to say, this whole experience was really putting you off having another child.
Not long after you reached the hospital, you were ushered into a room and left alone together whilst doctors and nurses bustled around trying to set up this surprise labour. Just then it hit you how terrified you actually were. You weren’t ready for a baby! You weren’t ready to push a baby out of you!
“Minho, I can’t do this!” You cry out, sad and confused.
He grabs your hand, “Yes you can, you’ve got this. You’ve been preparing for months. You’ve been to birthing classes. You’ve got this.”
“But this is different, this is real.”
“Yeah, it’s real. But you’re not doing this alone. You’ve got me and Lia to help you through this.” He says, wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Let’s do this, Minho. Let’s have our baby!” You say, suddenly feeling motivated. The sooner out, the better.
Tumblr media
It took seven hours before you were ten centimetres dilated, and it certainly felt like it. This was definitely the worst pain you had ever felt in your life, you hoped that the eventual birth of your baby was going to overshadow this pain, cause if not, you were not going to look back on this day fondly.
“Come on, Y/N. You can do it!” Minho says, as you begin pushing. It feels like everywhere is ripping as you attempt to force this baby out of you, and every shred of dignity you once had gone down the drain. You hoped that no one looked at you differently after this was all over.
With one final push, you finally felt a change, a respite, a sense of relief. And then, you were greeted with a cry, the most melodic cry you had ever heard, it was your baby. Screaming, slimy and bloody, but yours.
“Congratulations. It’s a girl.” The midwife says, placing the baby in your arms.
You grin with glee, a sudden rush of adrenaline pumping through your body. You wrap your arms around Minho with happiness, nonchalantly placing a delicate kiss on his lips before going back to fussing over your newborn baby daughter. Only then you realised, oh god, you’d just kissed Minho!
Fortunately, Minho didn’t seem to mind, probably putting it down to the heat of the moment. Instead, his eyes were focused on your daughter, your hands cradling her tiny body, and you realised that he hadn’t yet held her.
“It’s your turn,” You say, gently passing her to him.
“Are you sure?” He barely whispers, taking her in his arms.
“She’s just as much yours, as she is mine.”
“What do we call her?”
“I was thinking the name Poppy would suit her quite well, don’t you?”
“I think Poppy is perfect.” He says, looking down at the bundle in his arms, and you couldn’t help but agree.
Tumblr media
Finally having been discharged from the hospital, following a few days of observation (with Poppy being early they wanted to keep an eye on her health), you took your first step back as a parent into your apartment. You placed her into her new cradle, Minho not far behind you. This was the first time she’d been quiet in an hour, and you both wanted to take advantage of the silence.
Tiptoeing back into the living room, you both collapsed onto the sofa in exhaustion. You both relax in silence, only breath being exchanged between the two of you. Until, looking up from the couch, he finally says three words to break the long-held silence.
“Can we talk?”
“What about?”
“I think you know what about.”
“I don’t.”
“You kissed me, Y/N.”
“Oh yeah, I did.”
“Did that mean anything to you?”
“It did.”
“Good, because it meant something for me too.”
“What does it mean for us?”
“I’m not sure, but I’m willing to wait to find out. What about you, I know we have a baby now, but there’s still time?”
“I’d like that, I’m willing to find out too. In time.
“In time…”

A/N The first fic back in a while. Sorry I’ve been so inactive, I’ve been swamped with uni work and I’ve been dealing with a lot of mental health issues that have come along with it. Luckily, I’m feeling a lot better and more motivated, and I’m ready to start writing again. Hopefully I’m not too rusty, hope you enjoy :).

The clanging, banging, clashing sounds of pans are familiar in a kitchen. It’s like along with making food, they’re making music too. You’ve always appreciated this, maybe that’s why you grew up cooking- and why you’re applying for an assistant chef job now.
The job you had applied for was in a local hotel, well-known and prestigious, along with being well paid. It had been up for a while, you had only just applied after becoming so desperate for money, but you really hoped to get it regardless.
However, it had been a shock to you when you arrived and they said that you would have to make a dish on the spot, as part of the evaluation. So now, you were currently panicking trying to figure out what to make to wow these people.
You were limited in terms of food, but you had managed to scrape up a dish of strawberry pancakes. Daseul, the assistant chef, then informed you that they would be feeding your dish to the remaining staff members. You had no time to mentally prepare yourself before the entirety of the staff traipsed into the building. One by one they grabbed a fork and took a taste of your dish, you stood in the corner messing with your fingers and hoping that your latest venture wasn’t a complete failure.
Finally, you got some feedback.
“They’re so good!” One of the receptionists exclaimed.
“Yeah, they’re not overly sweet, but they’re not plain either.” Another said from the crowd of people.
It seemed like you had done well, the general consensus being that the pancakes were good, and you hoped that this meant you had a shot at the job. But your hopes are all shot down with one sentence.
“I thought they tasted pretty boring, there was nothing really special about them.” A hotelier states, he’s handsome but you could tell that he definitely knew it. He smirked at your shocked/appalled expression. What was his problem with you?
“Right then, Y/N. That’s all we’ll need from you today. We’ll contact you if you’ve got the role.” Daseul gave you a smile, snapping you away from glaring at the boy.
“Thank you,” You give a half-nervous smile, being guided out of the glamourous hotel and back to your shitty beaten-up car.
The entire time, your mind was occupied by the unnecessarily rude hotelier. You definitely did not want to see him around if you got the job. But that was presuming you got the job at all, in fact, all you could do now is wait.
Tumblr media
You get a call back in the following weeks, and you’ve got the job. You were so happy to have gotten the position, and proven yourself a good cook, but the comments of that one boy had stayed in your mind since day one. You thought, about what you had done to get him to talk to you that way, and the confusion wasn’t soon to go.
You quickly found out that his name was Seokjin, and he was similarly new so you didn’t know what had gotten him so cocky. On top of that, he was actually still an intern, so now you had seniority over him. Oh, how the tables have turned. You wondered if he actually thought you’d get the job. Either way, it had backfired on him, and you constantly found yourself thinking of plans to get back at him.
On your way to the second-floor kitchen (you still had no idea as to why they had several on different floors), you didn’t pay attention to who else was entering, until he showed up. There he was, the man that you had been ignoring for the past week, and the one who attempted to sabotage your interview.
You didn’t acknowledge his existence, sure he may be quite handsome, but it all changes as soon as he opens his mouth. And you were about to experience this frustration again, as you were about to be stuck in this elevator with him for longer than you wanted.
“I see you’re still around.” He stated rather monotonously, not even bothering to look in your direction.
You sigh, “Are you still on about that. I thought you would have gotten over that by now.”
“Look, your food was fine, but it isn’t to the calibre of this hotel.” He gave a cocky smirk.
“And who are you to say that? You have no experience with cooking. You’re just an intern.” Your frustration was growing, though you attempted to keep a cool temperament.
“Just because I’m an intern now, doesn’t mean I won’t be higher in the future.”
“We’ll see about that.” You snidely commented, it arrived at your floor and you immediately stormed out, not giving them a chance to respond.
You couldn’t believe you had talked like that, but he annoyed you in a way that no one else could. It was almost like you were two squabbling children. But you had to sort it out quick, one wrong move and your tempers could send both of you packing.
Tumblr media
Today was a good day, not because your routine was any different, nor because you had gotten a pay rise or any sort of promotion. In fact, it was to do with someone else’s misery, namely Seokjin’s. And the best part- he didn’t even know yet.
You had arrived a little early to work today, feeling uncharacteristically chipper. It had been a call for all the kitchen staff to come in earlier than usual to prepare for a certain guest, someone you heard was quite of high calibre. Whilst most of the staff seemed petrified with fear, you were kind of excited. You were anticipating this guest, after all, you wanted to see the person that had all the staff in a frenzy.
You were also excited for this person to judge your food, maybe getting to create a few more experimental dishes. But most of all, it was the news that this person was supposed to be chaperoned by Seokjin, and they had gotten every previous chaperone fired. Maybe then your only issues with your job will be solved.
Some might say this is petty of you, but you don’t really care, you’ve always been kind of petty. Also, you are a great believer in getting rid of any negative presences in your life, and if that includes Seokjin, then so be it.
You mentally wished Seokjin good luck, after all, if the rumours were true, he was going to need a miracle to get out of this situation unscathed.
Tumblr media
It had been a couple of days since the guest had arrived, you had yet to actually meet them. You’ve been quite intrusive about asking of them, who they are, what they do, what they’re like? Still, nothing. Anyone who’s ever interacted with them has refused to look you in the eye, and avoided you like the plague.
Though, little did you know, today was the day you would meet this frightening guest. You wondered what sort of person possessed the menace to scare an entire faculty, and you knew that you’d find out eventually. Your luck wasn’t that good, you were bound to run into Seokjin eventually.
Today was the day, you had been asked to deliver a complimentary package from the kitchen to the guest. It was mostly full of healthy food, so you weren’t sure of this mysterious person, most high maintenance guests usually wanted decadent cakes or some other sweet treat. This only intrigued you more.
You made your way to the hotel room, briskly knocking on the door. Days had been building up to this moment and you couldn’t really wait any longer. But the last thing you expected was to open the door to a child, the little girl had a frown on her face and her eyebrows were creased. Had you knocked on the wrong door?
“Who are you, and what are you doing outside my room?” She snapped, crossing her arms.
“Umm… I think I have the wrong room. Sorry…” You trail off when you notice Seokjin in the corner, an amused smirk playing on his lips. He was enjoying this way too much. Then it dawned on you, this was the person everyone was afraid of- a bratty little girl.
“Actually, I am in the right place. This is for you.” You hand it out to her with a smile.
She glares at you, snatching it out of your hands before rummaging through the carefully packaged food. She doesn’t take too long looking through it before giving a disapproving huff, turning to Seokjin holding up a salad.
“Why is there chicken in this, I didn’t ask for chicken. One penalty point.” Seokjin’s eyes widened in surprise.
“What, I didn’t ask for chicken. It must have been a mistake on their part, give them a penalty point!” He pleads. “I’m sorry, Areum.”
“The both of you, go down and get me a proper salad without chicken.” She ordered ushering you both out and shutting the door behind her.
You immediately burst into laughter at the sheer absurdity of the incident, “So this is the person responsible for your job, some little girl. And what were those penalty points about? What do you really have to fear?”
“Thanks to you I got a penalty point. Three points and I’m done. Thanks a lot, now I need that salad.” He grumbled off, storming down the corridor.
“Don’t blame me, Seokjin. I only brought it up, it’s not my fault she’s fussy.” You both immediately reverted to your usual ways, but this time it was different. This time it could be his last.
Tumblr media
Seokjin was grasping for straws after your visit, he began upping the ante, especially with the first penalty point introduced. He began with making sure every situation was perfect, from the food to the company (aka him not speaking), still he made no leeway. There was something going on with the girl, and he was on a mission to find out.
That’s why he was on his way to the kitchen, to find you, the last person he expected he wanted to talk to. But today was necessary, you had seen what he had to deal with, and you had laughed it in the face. You were the only cook that would even consider giving you solo cooking to Areum, if you didn’t immediately refuse.
He didn’t really know where the two of yours’ petty rivalry began, but he did know that he found you annoying (and that maybe if you got along better then he’d find you cute). Maybe the two of you could squash the beef, and overcome this together.
Venturing into the kitchen, he finally caught your eye. “Y/N, may I speak to you outside about something?”
You rolled your eyes, obviously amused by his frantic behaviour, though you nodded and followed him out of the kitchen.
“What do you want, Seokjin? Look I don’t have all day, I do have a job , unlike a soon to be someone.” You sigh.
“I want your help cooking a dish for Areum. No one else will do it.”
“Why? Are they all still scared of that little girl?” You grin at the thought of your colleagues being scared of someone who can’t even cook for themselves.
“It’s not funny, I really need to make her like me. My job is on the line, please help me out!”
“What’s in it for me?”
“Other than being a moral human being? I don’t know, for the weeks after I’ll buy you lunch every day?”
You contemplate it for a second, but eventually agree. Making a sweet treat any little kid would enjoy, a brownie with some strawberries (because the girl clearly wanted to eat healthy sometimes). You take it to the room Areum is staying at, Seokjin having made a table, presenting your delectable dish to her.
She takes one look at it and frowns. “I don’t want it.” She says and pushes it away.
You look at her, confused, “Why not? Do you not like chocolate?”
“No. I like adult things, brownies are for babies.”
“I’ll have you know, lots of adults like brownies. There are two in this room.” You attempt to persuade her. Seeing her not touch it, you have an idea.
“Come on Seokjin, if she doesn’t want it we can go and find something else to give her.” He all but drag him out of the room.
“What are you doing? You’ve just made this worse.” Seokjin furrowed his eyebrows.
“Wait outside here for five minutes, and when she’s busy go in and collect the plate for me.” You give him a cocky smile before walking off back to the kitchen. You wanted to test this new theory, and what’s better than immediate results.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before Seokjin returned to the kitchen, an empty plate in hand. Even the crumbs were licked clean off the plate. You turn to him smugly, eyeing the plate before taking it off him. Looks like your prediction was correct, and Seokjin was wondering what was going on in your head and how you had figured Areum out.
“How did you know she’d do that?” He immediately inquired.
“What do you mean?” You feign innocence.
“You know exactly what I mean, she ate the entire brownie. She ate it after she refused it before.” He furrows his eyebrows in confusion.
“Isn’t it obvious?”
“No it isn’t, that’s why I’m asking you!”
“She’s putting up a front, Seokjin, for attention. My guess is that she doesn’t get too much attention from her parents, who are probably rich business people, and she’s been forced to grow up quick.”
He looks at you with confusion, pondering your astute observation. He finally nods resolutely, in seeming agreeance.
“You’re right, there is something up with her. I’m not sure if your theory is correct, but I’m willing to test it.”
You raise your eyebrow, waiting for him to elaborate. He stares back at you with serious intensity, waiting for you to crack, but you don’t give in.
“Are you really going to make me ask for your help?” He sighs in frustration.
“I am, I want you grovelling on the floor for it actually.”
“Fine. Please will you help me with Areum?” He pleads with you, giving you those puppy dog eyes. You eventually relent, even though you really disliked this man. You would feel guilty if you were the result of him being fired.
“I’ll help you, as long as you don’t question me.”
“Seems strange, but okay.”
“Right, then you need to buckle down on treating her like a child. That brownie was your last piece of hope, if she refused that you were done for. The fact that she ate the brownie means that she is still holding on to that last bit of childhood.”
“What do you mean? I have been treating her like a child?”
“No you haven’t, you’ve been doing everything she ‘wants’, all of which are very adult and boring. Take her to the park, do something with her that she can’t with any other member of staff in this hotel.”
“Are you sure this will work? She’s been so resistant to it so far.”
“But she ate the brownie, there are cracks in the wall she’s attempting to build. Now’s your chance to capitalise on it.”
“Ok… I’ll try. But I’m blaming it all on you if it doesn’t work.”
“Right then, get out of the kitchen.” You say, shooing him through the door, “Some of us have work to do, Seokjin.”
As he stumbles out flustered, you yell down the corridor “Update me if anything happens!”
You wondered if you had led Seokjin into the lion’s den, or if your hunch was right. Either way, there’s nothing you can do about it now.
Tumblr media
Seokjin attempted to loosen Areum up following the next couple of weeks, but the results weren’t very noticeable. Whilst Seokjin was yet to gain another penalty point, it was clear that this girl had not taken her guard down any less than what it was before. You wondered if you needed to switch up the current method, it obviously wasn’t giving the intended results.
Seokjin had taken her out to the park for the day, and you had tagged along as well. The kitchen staff seemed to want nothing to do with her, so you were assigned to cook for her for the day. Areum was complaining as usual, and you were enjoying Seokjin’s distress, but it didn’t last for long when Seokjin received a phone call.
As the voice on the other side droned on, Seokjin’s face became paler and paler, until he finally muttered a quiet goodbye and hung up the phone. He sighed exhaustedly, turning to the scowling girl and asking “Why didn’t you tell me that you had a violin lesson today?”
“I forgot, you keep bringing me to these stupid places.” She frowned.
“Are you sure it’s not because you don’t want to go? It can be a bit boring to play, what we’re doing is way more fun.” You smile, Areum’s motive was finally revealed.
“No, I have to go. I have a recital in a couple of weeks.” She crossed her arms defiantly.
So there you were, twenty minutes later, sat outside a practice room waiting for this impatient violin teacher/ tutor. It was kind of ironic that she complained of Areum’s lateness, but was then late herself. But eventually, she unlocked the door to her practice room and ushered Areum in.
Very quickly, it became apparent why Areum wanted to miss these violin lessons. This woman was not the sort of person you wanted to be around, she was loud, obnoxious and rude.
“How dare you be late to this lesson, Areum.” She snaps, “What would your mother think? This isn’t a very adult thing to do.”
And you just stood there, with gritted teeth, whilst you thought: she’s just a child, she doesn’t need to act like an adult yet. And it became insurmountably clear that the reason she stuck so harshly to these standards of adulthood, it was because every close person in her life was ushering her that way.
You look at Seokjin, a soft frown is placed on his lips. It seems that he too doesn’t like what he was seeing. Realising you’d seen enough, you were about to open your mouth and give the rant of your life, but it was quickly ended by Seokjin grabbing you and pulling you away from the door. He slammed it shut and dragged you away, protest coming from your mouth the entire way.
“Seokjin, we can let that woman say that to her!” You fume.
“Saying something will do nothing but get her in trouble, and get me another penalty point. It’s no use.”
You don’t argue with him, you don’t have the energy. All you know is that you need to change these things for Areum, because you knew deep down she was struggling more than she let on.
Tumblr media
You could tell a couple of days later that the events of the violin practice had an effect on her, she was moody and irritable, and despite these changes she was a lot quieter. Despite the girls’ flaws, you appreciated that she was outspoken. At least then she could say what she wanted.
That’s why you hatched a plan, ambushing Seokjin and pulling him away from the hotel room. He was less surprised with your antics, having gotten used to your impulsive nature, but he was still confused as to what you were thinking of. When you finally stop in the middle of the lobby, he took his chance to announce this confusion.
“What’s going on with you, you never tell me what’s happening.” He sighs frustratedly.
“What’s happening is that I have an idea on how to treat Areum up. Though, I do have to warn you, it does involve some deception on our part.” You pant, slightly out of breath.
“Don’t most, if not all, of your plans involve some form of deception?”
“Maybe they do, but that’s because they’re the most efficient.”
“Ok, fair enough. What’s your big idea then?”
“I think we should take Areum to the nearby Amusement park.”
“That’s a great idea, except you forgot the crucial part. Who’s going to pay for it?”
“Isn’t that obvious?”
“Would I be asking if it was?”
“Yes, but that’s beside the point. You’re the one that’s going to be paying, after all it’s your job on the line and I’m doing you a favour.”
He goes silent for a second, in contemplation. Finally nodding in some amount of defeat, he opened his wallet. “Ok, we’ll do it. But it’s your fault that my entire bank account is drained.”
So there you were, an hour later, queuing in line for the merry-go-round. Areum was making a face, attempting to feign some sort of anger, though you could see the sparkle of excitement in her eyes. It was sad to see that this was probably the first time that she had been to one of these sorts of places, so you wanted to make it as enjoyable as possible for her.
Luckily it only took a couple of rides for her to loosen up and give in to the fun, with her screaming down a tame water ride with Seokjin. You were on the side, mostly taking photos, whilst the two of you alternated on the rides. The park was mostly catered to children, with a few rides for older people, so it was a little hard for you to get into it.
After getting off the most recent ride, one that involved shooting people with water guns, Areum seemed ecstatic.
“Y/N did you see how many people I shot. Seokjin thinks I could be a pro,” she giggled. It was insane how different she had become in this short amount of time, almost as if there was a different child in the park with the two of you.
Racing off to one of the booths, you and Seokjin trailed behind, looking at her in amazement with the personality change.
“The two of you have a really cute daughter, you seem to love her a lot.” A nearby lady commented.
You flushed, going uncharacteristically quiet at the strangers’ compliment. Looking at Seokjin, you tell he had gone a shade of ruby, it seems like you weren’t the only person affected by this unexpected sentence. Thinking of it, Seokjin wouldn’t be too bad of a father. He was easy-going and attentive, plus after spending time with him, you discovered he was also equipped with an arsenal of Dad jokes.
You quickly realised that you shouldn’t be thinking of him this way, and instead should be replying to this woman, rather than just staring at her blankly.
“Oh, um, thank you. But she’s not our child, we’re just babysitting her for the day.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” She gives a flustered smile before parting shortly after.
The two of you stand behind Areum as she begins throwing balls at stacks of cans, a fruitless attempt at winning one of the large plush teddy bears hanging from the booth ceiling.
“I can’t believe that woman thought we were a couple.” Seokjin chuckled, attempting to diffuse the situation.
“Yeah, I know right. She couldn’t be further from the truth.” You gave a half-hearted reply. That one comment had shaken you up for the day, and you couldn’t help but keep thinking of all the ways to rid it from your mind.
Tumblr media
It was later than usual, the time that you got back, and you were all too exhausted to be dealing with anything right now. Though apparently, Areum’s tutor seemed to have some boundless energy that everyone else didn’t have. You didn’t understand why she was a tutor anyway, it was quite obvious that she didn’t really like children; despite the fact that it was her chosen profession.
“Where have you been all this time? Areum has study from 8 till 6, she doesn’t have time to deal with you two delinquents.” She cut.
You sigh, frankly fed up with this woman, and her complete lack of regard for children, or fun. “It’s a weekend, Areum deserves a break. Especially from the likes of you.” You snap back, finally tired of this woman’s bullshit.
“Excuse me, what’s that supposed to mean?” She glares at you.
“What it means is that you never give this poor child a break! Actually I don’t think you realise that Areum’s a child at all. You work her to the bone every day, you disallow for her to have any sort of fun, you dismiss any ideas that she has as childish. What sort of things does this teach a child?” You ramble, infuriated.
“She doesn’t have time to have fun. One day she’s going to have to take over a company. She needs to be prepared.”
“I could list a multitude of things that you teach her that in no way contribute to running a business, but that’s beside the point. She has plenty of time to learn this when she isn’t eight years old. She has decades before she has to even think about taking over, and skipping important childhood lessons can really stunt her development.”
With the finality of your rambling’s she’s stunned to silence. This is matched by the equal quiet coming from Seokjin and Areum, looking at you in some sort of disbelief. Areum’s face remains that way, but once Seokjin’s gaze catches your eyes his expression morphs into a smirk.
With nothing left to say, the woman mumbles a quiet, “We’ll talk about this tomorrow before storming into her room and slamming it behind her. Looks like you had cracked her, and for good reason too.
However, the tutor’s display seemed to have influenced Areum, as she’s quick to follow suit. Areum sprints to her room, locking the door behind her, with no signs of her leaving any time soon. All you could wonder now was what kind of mess you had gotten yourself into.
Tumblr media
You keep knocking on the door for a couple of minutes, but it’s to no reply. You sigh in frustration, realising that this was going to be a lot more difficult than you first expected it to be. You knock again: “Areum!” You yell through the door, “Please open the door.”
“It’s no use, Y/N. We can just get another key from reception.” Seokjin reasoned.
“We can’t that defeats the point. The whole point was for her to open up to us Seokjin, if we unlock this door for her it’s going to take ages for her to trust us the same way again.” You collapse against the door in defeat. Seokjin eventually joining you, the two of you pressing up against the door, thinking of a plan.
“I never got to really thank you, did I? For helping me with all of this, you didn’t have to.” He gives you a soft smile, “Now you seem to care more about me keeping my job than me.”
“Don’t flatter yourself, Seokjin,” You playfully retaliate, “I’m doing this for Areum. Hanging around with you all day is just an unwanted side effect.”
“Whatever you say…”
“Anyway, we have more pressing issues at hand.” You begin knocking at the door again. “Come on Areum, open the door. I’ll stay here all night if I have to.”
“Areum, come on. It’s better to tell us what’s going on rather than keeping it bottled up.” Seokjin joins you, banging on the door.
“Leave me alone.” You finally hear noise in the form of a soft sob, muffled by the hard oak door.
“Maybe if you tell us what’s wrong we can make you feel better.” You suggest, another attempt at opening the door.
“It’s not working, Y/N.”
“I didn’t take you for a quitter, Seokjin. Unless you want to resign now.”
“Fine… come on Areum, we won’t tell anyone what you tell us. It’ll be our secret”
Finally, that one line seems to persuade her, and you hear the familiar unlock of the door. A puffy face peers out through the small crack, her eyes stained red with tears.
“Oh dear,” You sigh with sympathy, quickly pulling the distressed girl into a hug.
“I want my daddy.” She sniffles.
You hadn’t heard much about Areum’s father, it seemed that her parents split up quite a while ago, and that she didn’t have too much contact with her dad.
“Have you told your mum that you miss him?” The little head buried into your neck shook with a no.
“Don’t you think you should tell her, so then you can see him?”
“Daddy wants to see me play violin, but he never comes.”
“What if we invited your dad to the concert that you have coming up?” Seokjin interjects.
The girls’ eyes lit up, “Really, you can do that.”
“Sure, of course, we can.”
She ran back into the room, excited and looking for her violin for extra practice.
“One key flaw with your idea, Seokjin. We have no idea how to contact this man.”
“It should be easy enough.”
Tumblr media
Turns out that finding this man’s contact info was a minefield. The two of you had resigned to going through all of the hotel’s guest info (which was probably not allowed, but you hoped they could pardon this special case), but there had been no luck so far.
You shuffled through stack after stack of boring administrative papers, attempting to find some connection to Areum’s father, but it had been two hours and the piles hadn’t lessened. At this rate, unless you had some miracle-worthy luck, you didn’t think that you’d be getting too far soon.
That was until you reached one specific folder, linked to Areum’s mother a couple of years ago, only it wasn’t just a room for her. There was a man’s name on the sheet as well, this looked very positive.
“I think I found something.” You say, flipping through the paper until it finally lands on the one thing that you need, the phone number. All you could hope now is that it wasn’t ridiculously outdated, and her dad hadn’t changed numbers by then.
Seokjin budged next to you, peering over your should. He grinned when he saw the combination of numbers printed on the page. “You better hope this works, cause I’m not sifting through another thousand pages of this.”
Picking up the phone, you dialled the number, listening to it ring. You wait a while, with no response, but you weren’t giving up yet. You’d only give up when it went to voicemail, and the longer it rings that seems more and more likely. Until finally, the phone picks up on the other side.
The conversation is brief, with a positive ending. It was Areum’s dad, and he intended to come to the concert as soon as he heard about it. You hang up the phone with a smile, and Seokjin matches it with one of equal brightness.
“Things seem to always go your way, huh.” Seokjin grins.
“You should feel lucky then, cause I’m helping you out. What would you do without me?” You joke.
“I don’t actually know.” He muses, “Seriously, Y/N, I owe my job to you. Thank you, I know we didn’t really get along at first, but I’m really glad we are now.”
“Who else would constantly save your arse.”
“I wouldn’t want it to be anyone else but you.”
With that one comment, the air seemed to get tenser, with Seokjin leaning in with no space to breathe. “I don’t know how to thank you.” He whispered, impossibly close.
“I can think of a few ways.” You mutter, gently pressing a kiss to his lips, pulling away as quickly as you pressed them there.
Seokjin reciprocated, clutching your cheek and pulling you back against him, kissing you again slowly. His lips caress yours with the utmost care, as though you could disappear at any moment and he was trying to memorise your taste. Eventually pulling away, you couldn’t look away from each other, as though your eyes were magnified together.
“I didn’t expect that to happen.”
“Neither did I.”
Tumblr media
It was finally the day of the concert, and Areum was trembling. You hadn’t ever seen her in a state as frozen like this, and this proved challenging as you encouraged her to unpack her violin for the concert. Seokjin was clutching your hand supportively, as the two of you encouraged Areum. She could do this, you knew she could.
Her tutor was there, which really wasn’t helping the situation. It seemed that the tutor was the only person that could silence Areum, which was sad for the usually outspoken girl. You encouraged her to get ready, the curtain ready to rise any second, and time to see if the parents had shown for Areum’s big performance.
As the curtain rose, you spotted the faces that you wanted to see, at least from your angle from the side of the stage. Areum played beautifully, a few mistakes unnoticed. The piece that she was playing was especially advanced for her age range anyway. When the performance finally ended, it was followed by thunderous applause.
Once it had ended, the tutor stormed onto the stage, seemingly unaware that Areum’s parents were present (it was a shame that Areum usually didn’t have much attention from her parents), but you were glad they were here to witness how awful this tutor truly was.
The tutor snaps at Areum, reprimanding her for the few mistakes she made, commenting on how she should be more mature for her age, and that the other kids were doing fine. Needless to say, she was promptly fired.
As Areum was embraced by both of her parents, you grinned at Seokjin, even if he somehow lost his job, he could go knowing he had done a good thing. And you couldn’t be happier to know that you were a part of it.
“Do you want to go and get some celebratory ice cream after this?” Seokjin asked.
“Only if you’re paying.”
