so u know how u said in ttsbc that it's respectful to learn the courting rituals of the individual you're trying to woo? Well, I was just wondering if that happened with doc and Etho, and I did some research, and...

I might draw this lol. I'm picturing Doc just SCREAMING and Etho w/ a thought bubble that just says "hot" LOL.

Anyways the question was over whether doc ever did that for etho or vice versa, but considering the rituals, I'd think not...

2. For traveling thieves, do the collars respond to intentions? In the latest treebark fic, the guy says "do not harm him" whilst referring to Martyn, which made me wonder how vague it could get. Could you say "don't go too far away" in leu of any other movement restrictions (ex. Grian's old "don't fly higher than twice the height of the market), and the collar would just understand? Or, even vaguer, "don't do anything I don't want you to do" to prevent any loopholes people like Pearl would find?

3. Are witches that rare/powerful? Ren comments that Martyn could have the world eating out of the palm of his hand, just because he's a witch, which makes me wonder how important they really are. For example, would he or Gem have more authority? Also what powers do they have besides the training in healing that Martyn got? Any fighting ability, or stuff like that?

2. Ok, lemme see if I can explain this properly. The collars respond to an 'understanding' of the order. They'll enforce whatever the hybrid hearing it understands the order to be. So in this situation, Ren understands the arena master is referring to Martyn when he says 'do not harm him' so therefore the collar accepts that as the order, and Ren can't make any aggressive moves toward Martyn without triggering it. For your other example, if someone said to Pearl 'don't do anything I don't want you to do' there's a million loopholes in that, because Pearl doesn't know for sure what her master does or doesn't want her to do. I mean, obviously they wouldn't want her attacking them, but like...what if she attacked some other guy? What if she flew really high in the sky? What if she stole some food? She doesn't know for certain that those things aren't things her master would want her doing, so the collar wouldn't trigger. Another example would be if someone said the same thing, 'Do not harm him' but the hybrid truly didn't understand who was being referred too. Then the collar wouldn't trigger. They didn't understand. Of course, in these scenarios, most hybrids as we know them would ask for clarification to ensure they didn't disobey, but even still, that's how it would work. Hopefully this makes sense!

3. Witches are quite rare and powerful, yes! Not to the extent that they're insanely rare and completely unheard of, but like, if you saw one walking down the street, it would be quite the event. Most major cities have a coven of witches established in them, but that's only a few dozen individuals within a population of tens of thousands, so that's still quite rare. Martyn is headed out into the sticks, so the more remote areas he heads too probably only have one witch per town, and so that witch would command a great deal of respect and their word would carry a lot of sway. Martyn being someone on the same playing field as those sorts of people automatically makes him very important. Comparing him to Gem isn't exactly possible. Gem holds a ton of authority in the underbelly of cities and with the mercenary guild, but with your average person...well, they wouldn't even recognize her. Like in the story where she and Pearl are going after that dude, he doesn't recognize her as the Slayer, she has to tell him that's who she is. Martyn is obviously a witch, from how he dresses to his charms and pendant, you can tell at a glance, so that's a much more sweeping sort of authority. He'll come into any conversation already being heavily respected and any average person would take him at his word. As far as powers go, the thing about witches is that they have an incredibly high level of inborn mana, to the point that they can actually die from mana overdose as kids if they don't find someone to help them with training, and we hear about how this almost happened to Martyn, but lucky his teacher took him in. Witches are special because they have unique inborn skills, such as the pocket dimension spell 'Inventory' (yes I know I'm very clever 😭) and also several different appraisal skills. But that's not all! They also aren't restricted to one form of magic. Martyn studied healing magic, but he can still cast fireballs, ice spells, weather magic...pretty much nothing is off the table for him so long as he's at least passable familiar with it. He might not be as good as an expert, but he can pull it off. The only sorts of things he couldn't do would be nature magic, which is specific to elves. But basically any magic a human is capable of, Martyn is capable of. And he also trained and studied for the purpose of being able to mimic and manipulate spells and mana usage that he sees off the cuff, unlike mages who would need to train up to using spells in their domain. And Martyn isn't trained as a fighter! He can't throw a punch, but he can throw a fireball! That's why he needs Ren, because like all good witches, he needs space, focus, and casting time to get spells off. Suddenly being assaulted by bandits on the road by himself wouldn't end well for him, so he needs someone like Ren who is capable of physical combat to keep him safe and give him that time to get his magic going!

okay guys. wowee. what a busy six months it’s been for me.

i have finally—successfully—completed university! what the fuck. 😀😀. the thought of me actually finishing and going to GRADUATE later on this year has hit me in bursts, but i don’t think i’m allowing myself to properly know that i’m done with it all now.

whilst celebrating that, i am also celebrating reaching TWO THOUSAND+ FOLLOWERS on here!!!

You caught me 😆 I couldn't get this out of my head so I wrote a thousand words of it last night. Priest Mobius hears there's a demonic possession and is Really Stoked about it, because who wouldn't be? A chance to exorcise a real demon? Hot damn!

Meanwhile God Loki is definitely Not a Demon (right? Or maybe...)

Anyway I don't have much of a plot worked out yet, but some juicy vibes. Also Mobius is a hot daddy priest. Loki will definitely be getting tied to the bed at some point.

Here's a snippet. A wippet, if you will. Please forgive that it's totally unedited.

The man opens the door, and Mobius immediately knows it must be him. There’s something serpentine about his looks, tall and pale, sharp and slithering. His black hair is slicked back and his black silk shirt clings to his shoulders, but the most telling feature is his eyes. They’re a shining, emerald green, and if the light catches them just right, the pupil of one almost looks like a vertical slit. Mobius doesn’t think he’s ever seen anything so beautiful.

He extends a hand.

“Afternoon! Name’s Mobius.”

The man looks down at the hand, confused, and then his eyes trail up Mobius’s torso, catching for a moment at his collar, before settling on his face.

“...Father.” The word is a simple, dead-end statement of fact, not questioning or inviting conversation.

Mobius waves it aside. “Don’t worry about all that. I never cared for the title, anyway.” His hand is still extended, and the tall man still hasn’t taken it, nor has he opened the door beyond halfway.

He looks out, up and down the street, then back at Mobius. “And you’re here because…?” He’s got that Hugh Grant lilt, with none of the smiling charm.

I was too busy, uh, watching more Black Sails yesterday (😆) to really notice how huge the pirate poll blew up until the drama was all over my dash, but damn

Anyway... wait, pause to acknowledge a few disclaimers like a) Black Sails and OFMD are entirely different shows for different audiences with different messages, so the individual words "gay", "pirate", and "show" hit almost every similarity they have (and they both do what they are trying to do! - it's just a poor comparison to each other), b) even a little harassment goes a long way for OP so maybe Tumblr should do less blatantly mocking them, if only because there are thousands of us and they are kinda outnumbered, and c) voting Flint in a silly pirate poll is not bravely taking OFMD to task for problematic aspects no matter how you spin it. Ok, now... Anyway, I do think this whole thing is another great case study in how petty fandom drama can look so much bigger than it actually is.

Like, for all the current narrative is this huge wave of Black Sails fans jeering and joking in the tags in support of curbstomping Stede, real numbers paint a different picture. When I checked the poll this morning, a few hours after it closed, it had around 2300 reblogs. A lot, to be clear. Plenty to look overwhelming to the poll runner in their notifs. But compare that to the total votes:

2300 vs 21,500??? Stede lost with something near 4 times as many votes as the total number of reblogs. The vote difference was nearly twice the reblog count. Even if every reblog came with commentary (not true) and all commentary was Flint fans maliciously dunking on OFMD (not remotely true), that hypothetical "toxic" element still would never have been anything near the majority. And this makes perfect sense!

It's a random cross-fandom tumblr bracket! You look at two pictures and pick either your blorbo, your fandom, the best vibes, or the guy you don't have filtered for being annoying. Hell, just positioning it at all as OFMD fandom vs Black Sails fans / OFMD haters isn't accurate, because I'm a decently skewed OFMD blog and literally everyone I saw in my section of this (massively divided) fandom was voting Flint 🤣. He wasn't an underdog in any respect.

I'm sure there was enough notably aggressive hate to upset OP since they are the one who would be getting all the notifs and even anons (who I'm sure we all expect to come in with calm and well reasoned observations 🙃), but I'm not actually sympathetic enough to pretend they didn't react terribly and contribute to blowing it out of proportion.

Flint didn't win due to a harassment campaign or even a massive resurgence of dedicated fans, guys, and Stede didn't get unfairly curbstomped into oblivion. Tumblr just widely voted on their fave pirate the way tumblr does 🤷‍♀️

But yeah, I love my friends and I'm happy to be surrounded by such lovely, encouraging and supportive people (I do tend to close off to myself sometimes but they help me express myself more) and I am extremely glad I got the opportunity to have such a special bond with them. Fun Fact: I apparently have a 'plan', a pattern to make friends and that is "throwing bait" 😂.

And it is random because I don't do so deliberately. For example, with @ilicon, he heard me during a lesson back in high-school saying "are you sure about that?" - John cena meme. With @wingsofhcpe, I happened to be talking about anime and a comiccon with my friends at uni and they came over to talk to us (brave, I would remain in my spot stalking). With another friend from uni and these last days with a new girl- I happened to write in the uni's group chat that I was reading a fanfiction and have watched pitbabe respectively.

It is inevitable cause everytime I'm listening to music, I always move one way or another even if I'm sitting down. Dancing in either my room or in the living room when no one is home, making/learning choreos as if I'm a singer/idol.

I was part of dancing teams, the majority being traditional Greek dances at my schools but the last two years I did Latin and tango. I'm sad I had to stop but oh well.

You know - I don’t follow many ships.

Normally I watch something or see something - could be gif sets on Tumblr - and think, they should bang - read some fanfic - but don’t stay on it too long or go too deep in the fandom.

Like an itch that once scratched, you don’t think of anymore.

Every once in awhile one might pop in my head - and I’ll look up some stories.

Rinse repeat.

Now, the first ship I ever had - but didn’t realize at the time what ships were was Due South - Ray and Fraser.

I was obsessed with Stargate SG-1 though - only watched that for the relationship between Jack and Daniel - MY LOVES!

I own all ten seasons on the original DVDs - these huge box sets - and the made for TV movies 🤦‍♀️ I hide them better than most people hide their porn collection.

I do love Hannibal and Will but I’m not in the fandom - that is mostly too dark for me - not the show itself (oddly enough) but for the fanfic - I like it with a little cream to lighten it up, so to speak - mostly AUs for them - so I didn’t really read a lot of it.

I love fashion - I love looking up outfits and dresses - I love shoes especially boots - fall time kills me 😭 seeing all the pretty boots in store. I love makeup and hair, especially watching hair tutorials and hair hacks. That may be due to the fact my hair is naturally whip straight - and doesn’t really style - everything falls out - the fact it’s down to roughly the small of my back doesn’t help in those matters - it lives in a bun most of the time so I have a thousand ways to do buns 😆

If I have a hidden talent, it has yet to present itself.

FIC: no one cries for unknown soldiers - BEHIND THE SCENES

Hi!

If you choose to see more, you’ve most likely finished my fic no one cries for unknown soldiers, my Shikatema WWII fanfiction, or you’re too curious, haha!

A fic about World War II demands a lot of research and thinking to make sense for an audience of 2022. I wanted it also to be as realistic as I possibly could write, hence a lot of planning went into the end result. Beneath the cut, here are ideas I had which didn’t fit into the finished product, plus what my first ending would be! Read on your own risk for spoilers. Thank you, everyone.

I am a person who lets my ideas simmer for a long while before I commit to them and write them from beginning to end.

The first seeds of this WWII were born early summer 2021. The very first idea was a one shot, with Temari and Shikamaru on the same side on a battlefield, and the fic would end with them charging into combat.

Now, that didn’t go anywhere and I let the idea of a WWII au die. Who wants to step on that landmine and write such a fic anyway?

Apparently this fool.

I let the idea of a WWII au fic rest for the entire autumn of 2021. It wasn’t until late 2021 I, actually out of spite, decided that it’s now or never, I will write this fic. That was of course before war and suffering broke out in Europe again in late February 2022. I might have never written this fic if the war had broken out earlier, yet here it is.

I always knew I would place the setting in Finland, since - well - it’s much easier to write about the part of history which you know the best. If someone didn’t pick it up, yes, I’m Finnish. Moving on! From scouting the WWII tag on AO3, it seemed most writers, from all kinds of animanga fandoms, either wanted to make the characters Japanese (to honour the origin of the franscise), British during the Blitz, or SS officers (probably for added angst). However, I felt like I couldn’t make it real or have proof my facts are correct if I wrote solely about another country’s army and culture.

I always knew Shikamaru would be a Finn in the story, but to play with canon Temari had to be from another country.

My very first idea was that Temari would be a German soldier dispatched in Finland solely for the war - especially in Lapland thousand of German soldiers were dispatched to protect mines and fight alongside Finns. The main plot would be the Finns (among them - Shikamaru) deporting the Germans, and it would base itself on allies to lovers to enemies, or something along those lines, but in the name of honesty I didn’t know if I could make it feel real(istic). And, I would have had to study double the more of the Lapland war against Germany, since I don’t know as much about it as about the Continuation War. That meant that Soviet would be framed as the ‘enemy’ instead of Germany.

I played with the idea of having the Sand Sib family Russian, so they would have that extra predicament of being ‘traitors’ to both countries, but I don’t know how realistic it would end up being.

Finally I settled for German-born but raised in Finland version of Temari, and I’m super proud of the development. I think it added a perfect bittersweet, lighter version of geopolitical angst.

Things I thought about writing in, but in the end didn’t:

Rasa was going to die. At first I had scheduled it into the 4th chapter, with Rasa also being out in the field, but I never did it. I think the fact that he survived brought in even more possibilities to the story.

The Russian prisoner of war Kiba killed was going to be Omoi, but I honestly forgot to write in the hints of his identity and remembered it after the chapter was published haha.

Kiba’s death was originally going to be much more brutal. At first I was going to have him commit a war crime brutal enough to be court martialled (war trial) and was going to be executed by shooting behind a sauna. Temari and Shikamaru were going to be the executioners, as a punishment for going out their way as they did in chapter 7. It was hinted with Temari saying “We should shoot men like him” in chapter 5, with her later shooting him. Executing the own soldiers in tries to raise moral was a thing. I discussed it with my beta reader, who was of the opinion it wouldn’t make sense to write in such a crime for Kiba, so I scratched that idea before I wrote it. Him suffering an SCI and then ending his own life instead of Temari doing it was brutal in it’s own right.

Originally Lee was going to die instead of Sai in the end, but given the impact Sai had on the characters (and probably readers) it was more powerful to kill him. Lee’s death would have been heartbreaking, but not powerful, in my head.

The reason I was so hesitant with killing off Sai was because the original ending was going to feature Inojin and Shikadai on the first day of their obligatory military service (which would take part in the later 60s) and kinda tie together the idea that the experience of serving in the army is (in Finland) passed down generations as part of a heritage and culture, to always be ready to protect the country from an assault. That meant I would have to have Sai alive.

However, in March 2022 I read an article where they interviewed one of the first women who joined the army in the 90s (now way over 40 years old) and inspired by that, I decided that *that* would be my ending, that Temari sees the army open for women be passed on to future generations instead. That way I could kill finally kill Sai.

I wanted to have a cool scene of Ino coming by skiis to them with more rifles, I had this super cool vision in my head, but no matter how I tried, I could not justify that such a thing would realistically happen in war. It’s my big sorrow I couldn’t get Ino in more scenes.

I was going to have a scene of Temari bonding with the W*ehrmacht soldiers that were sent to the Finnish-Soviet front that Kankuro spoke of in chapter 10. She would enjoy their company and become their friends. I never managed to squeeze in this scene in the already very long chapter 11.

Yes, Shikamaru’s partner who died before Temari joined his platoon was supposed to be interpeted as Asuma.

I wanted a scene with the German word “panzar” (tank). I just think that is such a beautiful word and thought of having a fun little scene when Shikamaru wonder how the name of the antitank weapon “panzarschreck” was supposed to be pronounced and Temari has some lighthearted fun. I never got around to write it in.

Things playing a bit with canon

The fact that Gaara is the one who has to take over the family’s belongings because he is the only one with Finnish citizenship was a definitive nod to him being Kazekage after his father, and Karura’s love giving him his powers = giving him the power over his family in this version.

Rasa’s brother who died in a trench in WWI and whose body was never found was a nod to the 3rd Kazekage.

Shikaku’s death in an air-strike was a nod from the Tailed Beast bomb in the 4th Ninja War.

I know this is random, but do you have headcanons for Saiino before they got married? Like, how do you think they try to make the relationship work? Because I don't think it will be easy for them to understand each other at the beginning of their relationship.

I think love where one learns to love the other one over time is underrated! I think Saiino is an example of a couple that learned to love each other over some time, and that is not a bad thing.

Ino - however hot headed she could and can be - is also an understanding person and not stupid either; she knows Sai's background and the rocky road he has had to get where he is in Boruto. We see that she shows compassion for him in Shikamaru's story, and I can't believe she finds it too hard to continue with the same patience.

Sai is goal driven - he has an end goal after he caught feelings/interest for Ino - and thus he makes certain decisions and imitate certain behaviors to gain her interest back.

Dating ensues!

But we all know romance isn’t a single track and there must’ve for sure been times Ino is frustrated at Sai for not getting certain clues or Sai beats himself up for not understanding the situation.

However, what makes Ino stay is when she knows Sai is trying, and he is trying for her. That is what will make her swoon over him over and over again, after a life time of competition and whatnot, and here is a man who tries his best for her and only for her. And I think knowing that is what Ino needs. She needs to not have to compete for once in her life, the least in her romance and she grows to love him back, deeply.

This is only cemented harder when she gets to be a motif for his artwork, to know she is the apple of his eye, to have his eyes on her. “Paint me like one of your French Girls”, anyone?? The intimacy that comes with portrait painting, y’all. Underrated.

So, whenever they had an argument where they miscommunicate, I’d assume Ino would rant to Shikamaru, who from a logical sense can calmly let her know what he thinks is Sai’s POV and what he fails to tell her, and Ino would calm down and they’d talk it out. Oh god, I can see them talk a lot, not only because Ino knows talking and opening up is healthy, but also because Sai genuinely wants and needs to know what went wrong and how they can fix it. Deep talks during starry nights, over tea, in bed, in every mundane life situation.

NSFW! He’s probably also very good at sex because this man studies and reads up on the anatomy of the female body and orgasms ensue. To be physically connected in a way sex allows one to be is something he cherish a lot, hence why he makes sure Ino comes, over and over again. Man’s a keeper.

These were my incoherent rambles, which were maybe more of an analysis than headcanons, but I hope, anon, that you got a peek into my brain and small headcanons of them 🥰

So me @jaerie @haztobegood went to get tattoos at Great Lakes Tattoos and Brandon, my tattoo artist, asked what we were doing today and I told him we were in the city to see a Louis Tomlinson concert. He was like, "oh cool cool." Clearly not really knowing who I was talking about. Just kept chatting. Then he asked how we found the shop if we'd never been tattooed there before and I was like...well...this is where Louis got a tattoo.

He pushed back away from me and said, "LOUIS TOMLINSON!! LOUIS TOMLINSON I KNOW WHO THAT IS. That shit was insane!" Another artist heard him and was like "Louis Tomlinson?? We had to turn the phones off for a week after he came in!" And Brandon said, "I wasn't even there and I woke up to THOUSANDS of DMs on Instagram." The other artist said people from all over the world were calling the shop. I was cry laughing at this point and Brandon is laughing. A THIRD artist came over to say it was completely wild for a while after he came in. And I apologized on behalf of Louies everywhere a;sldjkfsa and that maybe it would have been slightly less wild had he not got the tattoo on his ass and posted pics of it. We were both wiping away tears and he was like, "it was obnoxious at the time but it's fucking hilarious looking back on it. Eric (that's the one who did Louis' tattoo) has a fan page and someone wrote a song about him!"

Anyway, it was both hilarious and embarrassing lol and I did not expect to cry laugh while getting my first tattoo 😆

If I may, can I ask for some art of Genma/Gai? Now, I could write books on this favorite rarepair of mine, but let me explain why I ship them so much, to see if you may be interested in drawing them.

1. Genma and Gai are able to act as the other half to each other. Gai is able to bring out the energy and make Genma take risks about things, and Genma is calm and rational, able to bring Gai back down if he goes too far. They're often there to work together as a team, knowing when the other needs that push or the reining in without asking.

2. They both care a lot about the people around them. Genma looks out for his fellow shinobi and Gai looks out for his comrades too. They may do it in different ways and some people may be more important than one to the other, but they're good backups to have your back. And they'll always be there for you if you need them.

3. They've known each other from genin days and have been together through a lot of ups and downs. Genma was there when Gai first began challenging Kakashi, was there when Dai-san died and (I like to think) helped him as a teammate with the loss. They've watched comrades come and go, and die, and they've stuck by each other since then, without a care.

4. I'm trying to convert more people to this ship: is it working? 😅😆

5. I have a whole series on A03 that goes deep into my headcanons on them, and I won't take up more of your time here. I know Genma is usually the fandom bicycle, but I like mother hen Genma and caring Gai together as one of my favorite wholesome pairs.

6. There is so few Gen/Gai art, that I get very excited when I see it, and I may leave a thousand kudos, likes, reblogs on it?

So, pretty please with a cherry on top, can I ask for some lovely art of this couple? If not, I will take your rendition of Genma instead.

I see so many people reblog it today and I cringe so hard (not because of you or them) because I know I'll never be able to reblog it (not because you blocked me, but because it's not true for me).

Oh dearest I don’t have to have dozens of friends to make an appreciative post. I have a good handful of people who write that I had the privilege to call friends 🙃. Also it’s more of a shoutout to the writing community because i appreciate every single one of them who grace us with their creativity! Writing like making visual art takes time, effort and patience…. And to do that whether it’s for one or one thousand people who read it is a labor of love!

Also as popular and widespread this post has gotten I’ve only gotten two shoutouts for myself😆. But you know. It’s all about quality and not quantity.

Someone out there appreciates your work and your efforts and maybe sometimes they’re too shy to let you know. So don’t be discouraged!

Friendship is a process and sometimes it takes a while but put in some effort and have a little faith in yourself. It will all be worth it in the end 😄

Well I understand Bethyl and their special relationship, but what is wrong with Emily and Norman? I'm new to the show, so ... are they dating or what my friend told me Emily unfollow him and all of this? Would you please explain to me what happened?

I’m assuming you’re referring to my tags on that video I reblogged? So first of all, regardless of their offscreen relationship it was so nice to get cute/fun normily content while they were on the show together. So that’s one of the reasons I said that.

As far as the history...basically it’s never been confirmed but many of us believe that they briefly dated in 2015. There was actually an article in Us mag in June 2015 about it & they had at least one (unnamed) source, NR technically denied it (more like diverted attention with a joke on twitter) but Emily said nothing & when she’s been asked outright she’s essentially refused to answer. Neither of them have ever said ‘no, that didn’t happen’. So onto the unfollow part. In May 2017 NR posted a pic of D***e on IG (I just don’t like her for multiple reasons so I don’t write her name out lmao if you don’t know who I mean, you can just google NR & it will tell you who his ‘partner’ is) & basically it became clear he was dating her (tho I think there was already news out about it) and later that day or the next day Emily unfollowed him. So...it seems pretty clear the reason why she unfollowed. He would continue to occasionally like Emily’s posts & once commented for her bday & she never acknowledged him lol. But apparently as of last month she’s decided to give their friendship another chance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m just gonna say it now: I think most everyone who ships Daryl with an existing character is pretty pissed about the fact that he is going to finally have a canon relationship with a brand spankin new, random character but please for the love of God if the actress who plays her has social media DO NOT SEND HER HATE. And don’t hate on her even if she doesn’t have social media. She got a role and did her job and had nothing to do with the plot & crap writing.

EK intro: I first met Norman Reedus working on The Walking Dead of course. Over the course of my four seasons on our show, I got to know Norman better and better and we became good friends. And in a sort of interesting parallel, our characters storylines also became more intertwined within the show. Norman is so special, he seems to have endless amounts of creative energy that I find incredibly inspiring. He also has great taste in music and coffee which makes him a perfect guest for this podcast. Welcome back to My Caffeine Withdrawal, I am so incredibly excited to share this episode with all of you today. Norman has so many fans and I know this to be true because everyday someone in my life or someone on social media asks me ‘hey, how was it working with Norman? What is Norman Reedus like?’ Well, now today you guys are going to get to know Norman in the same way that I know Norman! We talk about how Norman got into acting and when and why he moved to California, as well as what his life was like as an artist first starting out in Los Angeles. We talk about a book he’s been writing! And he tells a lot of great stories! But first, Norman explained his current coffee setup situation and how he’s currently weathering the quarantine from Costa Rica.

NR: I just set this up cause I’ve been listening to your podcast which I really like and I know it’s heavy on the coffee so I brought my coffee setup down the mountain in my backpack on the motorcycle and this is my coffee jam here (I’m not 100% sure of the last 2 words) so, this is what I do. You ready?

EK: Yes!

EK: What was the thing um, on Instagram, you posted this picture of a hummingbird, that was crazy! What made you post that?

NR: It’s this person that I’ve become friends with, they only try to post positive things…*he explains more about the person & post* (starts at 6:08)

EK: You wanna hear something kind of crazy about the hummingbird thing? I don’t know if you know this about me but I’ve definitely gotten more like spiritual…but like *Emily giggle* this is gonna sound crazy and I don’t even usually talk about this stuff, but I sort of have this sign of when I’m like guided where I’m supposed to go, and my sign has been a hummingbird. And you had text me and I randomly looked at your Instagram and saw—

NR: Wow

EK: —It definitely was like one of those where like ‘go there’, maybe it was just if there is a god or whatever just being like ‘oh nice, connect with your friend, you know, like connect with Norman…’

NR: I actually believe all that. When I texted you I was having breakfast at this place by the beach, the lady that makes the honey, by her place. And I was listening to your podcast with Lennie. And I had already heard Lauren’s and I was listening to Lennie’s, and at the end of it you were like ‘you know what I hope during Covid everyone can reach out to a friend’ and I was like ‘I’m just gonna text her’ so I texted you at that moment. I have the same thing with a bird like my dad, before my dad died he was always talking about cardinals, those red cardinals. So everytime I see a cardinal I think the same thing. And then the night before, Danai called me out of nowhere. I hadn’t spoken to Danai in forever. And she’s like ’what are you doing?’ and I’m like ‘I’m sitting on my patio with all the lights off…’ and there was a meteor shower, it was called like the Gideon meteor shower, this huge meteor shower that happened. And I saw 21 shooting stars before I went to bed. I pay attention to all that shit—

EK: Yeah

NR: 21! And I was like talking to her I’m like ‘there’s 11! There’s 12!’ and it just kept going. I believe all that stuff.

EK: I grew up Catholic so I kind of, like…religion in general felt sort of overwhelming even though prayer and stuff like that came naturally to me and then just over like the last like 5 or 6 years or so I’ve like really embraced it where I’m sort of like ‘yep, I think these things are happening, I have little signs that tell me like where to go…’. I guess I don’t really talk about it with people much but it’s just, like I read about it and stuff. Yeah.

NR: I believe it, I believe all of them. I’m not really religious but I believe all those signs all the time. I see little signs in everything, yeah.

EK: Yeah! (starts at 9:38)

EK: That sounds like you’ve had a very productive quarantine, or whatever this corona-pocalypse quarantine time.

NR: I’m not good with sitting still, you know what I mean, so I’m always doing something.

EK: Yeah! Yeah. I mean that’s one thing, when I was thinking about—when I was around you more working on the show, was that you were always…like you know sitting down to dinner and then like noticing this saltshaker and this fork should be next to each other in a certain way and then you can take a picture. You know what I mean, like I remember that about you like always making something, I guess. Or looking for the art in it or the picture. Or, you know, which um—

NR: it’s ADD or something I dunno what…

EK: I admired it because I feel like I can be so slow. Like, I love making stuff but I can sort of like piece it together over weeks and then I finally do—like in my head somehow, like I’m more of like a turtle! You know just like—

NR: Yeah but you make music! I mean, we all wish we could write songs and perform songs. You know, you make music. We all wish we were musicians, you know what I’m saying, so. (starts at 18:18)

EK: I remember you telling me a story of how you got an agent by like going to a party and then someone said ‘do you want to be in a play?’ and then you were the understudy and then the guy just happened to have to call out so then you were in the play, you didn’t have to be the understudy and then an agent—and that’s how it all started with acting, um, *laughs* did I just tell your story for you?!

NR: You’re right. No, no you’re exactly right. That’s exactly what happened. (starts at 26:08)

NR: I actually made an album, a music album

EK: You did?!

NR: Yeah

EK: Oh, that’s—you wrote all the songs and stuff? Or did you—

NR: I didn’t write any of it. And I didn’t really sing it, it’s more of a spoken word thing

EK: Yeah!

NR *tells story about how this came about, which involves an igloo*

EK: Wait, why were you in an igloo in Switzerland?! *laughs*

NR *tells more of the story…it’s long ok I don’t wanna transcribe it sdhfhsfh*

EK: Yeah I wanna hear your album! I mean…

EK: It is?!

NR: It played…it did pretty well in France, it was on the radio and shit

EK: Yeah, will you email it to me or something, so I can…

EK: I also wanted to make sure today to get some of your music picks because I remember back when we were on the show you always gave me the best music, like stuff that I hadn’t heard. I don’t know if if it’s just like because of your friends in New York or like maybe you’re a little bit older than me so you know different bands than I do. But, I remember like Dinosaur Jr., you like introducing me to Dinosaur Jr. Like I didn’t really know Dinosaur Jr. before you

NR: That’s crazy that you don’t know Dinosaur Jr. then (? I really can’t tell for sure that last word he says)

EK: I know! I think I might have pretended that I kind of I knew but like you introduced me for sure and I like totally dove in. But yeah during this quarantine, what have you been listening to?

NR: *lists some bands* Sean Lennon’s band that he made with Les Claypool is really good. He was on Ride with me.

EK: Oh, he was?! I’ve only see—I haven’t seen all the episodes of that, I’ve only seen, um, a few of them (adsdfdjf don’t lie Emily it’s probably actually 0 but we all understand babe) (starts at 35:10)

EK: It was so fun to talk to you today

NR: Yeah I miss you! I miss you, it’s good to see you and hear you.

EK: I miss you too, I’m going to check out that sock method…although I think it’s just pour over it’s just with a special…reusable—
