one whumpy thing i absolutely cannot get enough of is immortal/hyper-regenerating whump. like when a character is some sort of vampire or demigod or something where they can still get seriously injured and still feel the pain, but they can regenerate from it. The depths of the injuries can be much more serious without killing the character. Smashed skulls, getting impaled, limbs removed, it's great

i once read a book where a character like this had her head literally ripped from her body and it described in excruciating detail everything she felt as her brain slowly shut down, while she was trying to telepathically pull her body closer so she could regenerate. the whumperflies were unmatched. I think I was like, maybe around twelve, maybe younger when I read it and it's still stuck with me to this day.

most recently i've been reading The Locked Tomb books, which have a lot of this sort of whump thanks to all the necromancy, but also a lot of great whump in general.

the only downside with this type of whump is that it lacks the whumpy whumpy goodness of leaving scars, depending on how the regeneration works.

I talked a bit about immortal whumpee a little while ago here, but basically, my thoughts on immortality when it comes to whumpee are that I will always have a soft spot for whumpee who literally, physically cannot die. (and by soft spot, I mean ‘yesssss give the little guy all the torture, put them in ✨situations✨’)

I couldn’t agree more when you said the whumperflies are when whumpee feels all the pain but literally cannot escape that pain via death. so they’re left struggling, suffering, absolutely in the state where they’re miserable endlessly. it gives me whumperflies too.

p.s. I actually do have a blorbo who is immortal (he does die, but every time he dies, he will always immediately come back, thus his deaths are never permanent), and seeing him die a gruesome, horrible death in every episode of his show has been such a great source of whumperflies for me. the show’s called Forever, and its main protagonist, Henry Morgan, is cursed to live forever. also Henry Morgan’s a medical examiner so, apart from his constant death (this guy is never good at staying alive for long), we also get other whump via each murder Henry solves in each episode. although… while Henry’s many, many deaths are mostly rather quick (not that quick — don’t worry, the audience can still clearly see him in pain — but the show never lets him suffer for too long), the whump is actually very good. and overall it’s such a great show. it unfortunately got canceled after the first season, but a part of me will forever hope that it will maybe one day get a second season somehow 🥺

1: What are your favorite whump tropes?

A list of ones I don't like would be way shorter ahaha. I'm a sucker for sickfics, fainting and hidden injury. When a big, tough stoic character is so cool, calm and collected and then bam they start sweating, fainting and being all delirious... solid stuff. Also absolutely love whumpees being knocked out if you couldnt tell from my writing. If they're unconscious I'm there.

Love a good little stabby stab too, but a fun little trope I've tried to include a couple times if the knife to the throat and drawing a teensy little bit of blood. That visual in my head is always so great and the whumperflies are insane.

I also love soft fluffy stuff, team members looking after their Leader is a solid fav and the tough character cracking and becoming the fluffiest caretaker for whumpee is where it's at!

My writing contains my favorite whump tropes, I don't really write anything I don't like cause why would I? That being said if it was requested I would try my best, some of the prompts for JOD I didn't like turned out to be my favorite stories to write (Day 27 as an example might be my favorite story I wrote from the entire month, we might need to visit Enjar again?)

I also write different tropes depending what I'm studying at the moment! I recently started ~trauma studies~ so I hope it improves my physical whump a little more. (I'm a 2nd year uni student. Transferred from nursing to paramedicine at the end of last year and I have to do first year again yayyyy...) I was doing a lot of CPR as well as assessments for illnesses last semester (cardio-respiratory, abdominal and neurological) and last year did medications, life support and wound dressings. I have to try really hard not to do the step by step of aseptic non-touch technique or describe in detail how Rescuer inserts and OPA when I write lmao.

I usually resort to "And caretaker applied the dressing and went away" instead of "Caretaker lined up the dressing and using the fold method, applying the dressing cleanly to the sterilised skin" cause thats way too specific.

Anyway, the point of that ramble is that I use it to practice for my assessments, it helps me wrap my head around concepts I'm struggling with and it's good inspiration and fun to use my free time in an effective way. Whumpee fell over and broke their leg? Snail is on the scene! Whumpee had a seizure? Snail is doing AEIOUTIPS to figure out why! I love medicine as a science, that shits cool as fuck!

I don't tend to post those ones as they are kinda long, boring and kinda personal as the Caretaker is me. It feels like writing what is effectively fanfic about myself and doesn't make me feel right, I'm not a super boastful person really. I have posted a couple Cranky Whumpee is an example of when I did a mental check of how much I remembered about wound care and what I needed to study up on (the massage was just cause I wanted a massage). It keeps me interested in my more boring skills, prevents skill erosion and is good practice for writing and medical care, my two favorite things!

**I would like to clarify however, that I have a love for whump and a love for medicine but they are too seperate things. I don't get whumperflies for my patients and dont like to imagine scenarios in whump similar to what I have done irl. I got into whump as a thing after I began studying. I did not decide to study these things because of whump. I've always had an interest in medicine and almost everyone in my family are in the medical field in some capacity.** - thank you potential employersssssssssss :)

4: Do you prefer physical whump or emotional/psychological whump?

It really depends on the whumpee and what's happening. Physical whump is more fun to write, but psychological whump is a close second. Love delirium and all that jazz. Emotional isn't as much of a favorite cause I just can't get into it as much as the others, idky. I guess it just feels mean which is weird cause I happily write about people smashing Leader's ribs or whatever. Do love an emotional moment tho, fluffy emotional caretaking is the best.

maybe its cause I was a touch starved child but hugging, cuddling, being close just is nice to write about and I love giving my whumpees something nice as a treat.

Do you have any advice for writing whump? You are amazing at writing a wide variety of whumpy stuff that's so consistently strong and well written. Every year I can't wait for October to see what new goodies you will gift us with. I can't believe it's almost time again. 😁✨

omg I can't tell you how much that means to me, thank you so much! I really love writing whump (even though it's not popular, especially in this fandom, and I'm not the best at it by any means), so to hear that you look forward to my whumptober stuff is just... ✨😭✨ It's awesome, thank you 🙏

Anyways, advice! Like I said, I definitely still have a lot to learn about writing whump, but here's a couple things that have really been helpful to me for the last two years:

Don't be afraid. And by that I mean writing these stories may have you stepping out of your comfort zone, and that's ok! Whump is a deep dive into pain and suffering, and there are bound to be moments of doubt. Obviously if what you’re writing doesn't feel good FOR YOU as the writer, it's probably a good idea to step away. But if it's fears about how it will be received, or if you'll do it justice, or just generally feeling out of your element, push through! If nothing else, you can be proud of yourself for doing the piece you wanted in spite of your fears! :)  

Find the emotional undercurrent. You can break as many bones as you want, but if there's no emotional tether it will fall flat. Paragraphs of "BLOOD PAIN BLOOD!!!!1!1!!!" are nothing without dread, and dashed hopes, and all the things that draw us into the moment psychologically. Just as a case study, I love this piece by @the-modern-typewriter​ because what's horrible about what's happening isn't the torture itself, but realizing partway through the hero would give in if they could, but they literally can't, and that's what makes it hurt.  

Be self indulgent. And this is true of just writing in general I think, but, basically, write what you would want to read. That thing that gives you whumperflies? Do it. Do it like crazy. Even if it’s similar to another one you wrote, or someone else has written. Have I already written Link tied up and/or whipped before? Yep. Do I have every intention of writing it again the first opportunity I get? You bet I do. 😂

Actually, this is kinda funny because I generally don’t really watch TV at all, and have barely picked up a book in months…EXCEPT

I recently started watching the Witcher! I first heard about it here in the community, but since live action whump doesn’t really do it for me, I wasn’t all too interested. Until recently, when my parents mentioned it again, and my Netflix recommended started showing it to me as well, so I thought here goes nothing and went into it

The dynamic between Geralt and Jaskier reminds me a lot of my own and a friends characters that I’m really fond of, it’s all really well made in my humble opinion, it has swords and swordfighting and blood and it’s medievalish and even tho I don’t get Whumperflies from that kinda Media, I still thoroughly enjoy watching it!

Gotta admit, the amount and especially randomness of some slightly more explicit scenes did catch me off guard since I tend to watch stuff during breaks in class, and usually those scenes ick me out if there’s too many off them, but the rest totally made up for that and made it worth watching nonetheless

I’m now at, I believe…episode 6 of Season 2, because class and home life currently don’t really leave time for those things in life, and I’m absolutely looking forward to a Season 3 eventually!

And I forgot to say, but I actually got the game before all of that because it was on sale on Steam and I wanted to see what that was all about…really gotta continue playing when I find the time!

I think my fave’s gotta be Jaskier tho, he just. I just like him a lot sifjsjfjjsjf, his character and the way he deals with things and puts them in his songs and I think you could hear both our hearts break at the same time at the one scene with Geralt in the first season

What’s a memorable moment that gave you whumperflies?

Ah yes, I remember now! There's these several scenes from the Studio Dragon Kdrama "Memories of the Alhambra" that always give me whumperflies!

Thinking about it gives me the same excitement for the story and whumpy thriller scenes that I felt when I first watched it ✨
