A ramble on writing for my mental health

At the end of 2023, I calculated how long it would take me to finally get through the slow burn to the first kiss between Tom and Harry in Terrible, But Great.

At the rate I'd been posting at, I discovered that it would take an approximate of 3 to 4 years to get to the first kiss.

When I tell you that I lost it, I mean that I lost my motherfucking mind. 3 to 4 GODDAMN FUCKING YEARS to get to the FIRST KISS???

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

I ranted. I screamed. I raged. Unacceptable. Absolutely not. Fuck no. I refuse. Friends would say, "No, it's okay. We can wait. Take care of yourself. Mental health. Important. Blah blah blah."

NO. I love you.

NO!

I don't want to wait that long. I, ME, the author, do not want to wait three to four years to share one of my favorite chapters of all time. I don't want to wait. My soul wept at such an idea. Because there's so much more to come after the first kiss. How long would it take me to finish what I'd started? Life is fleeting. Life is fragile. I know this all too well when my mother died far too young in my arms. I'm not saying something will happen to me, but this story is so important to me.

And so

A determination like no other came over me.

I made an immovable, unshakable goal. I needed to write every single day, before everything else in my life. It had to be first. I wake up; I write. I've gained so much good by going to college, but I've also lost so much when it came to writing. I needed this. I needed to write - before the duties, the homework, the chores, before EVERYTHING because I needed it.

I decided that 700 words a day was a reasonable goal for me. I could do it. I could reach that. If I wrote 700 words a day, it'd be an average of 21,000 words per month with a total of 255,500 words for all of 2024.

Not only would I reach the first kiss, not only would I finish Arc Two, I would also finish Arc Three, which contains the climatic purpose of the whole story.

On that day, when I never really made New Year's Resolutions in the past, I set this daily goal of 700 words per day.

It's now the end of January. Did I accomplish this goal?

Yes.

50,461 words.

Not only did I reach the goal, I surpassed it. There's 35,000 words more in Arc Two than there was at the beginning of January. There's 15,000 words more in Arc Three, Arc Four, and Arc Five collectively.

I discovered so much about the story in Terrible, But Great. I learned so much more about the characters. One day, if you're a reader of the story, you'll learn about it, too. I promise.

I learned there was an Arc Five, when I'd barely thought about a fully realized Arc Four. I learned about the final chapter, about the final lines.

I cried that day.

Life is still hard; it's still stressful. But you know? The depression that would settle over me by this point in the semester hasn't come. I'm so much happier than I've been for a long time. Putting what gives me the most joy in life has been the best thing I've ever done.

Yes, there are still some hard days. Yes, some days, it's harder to write. But as I look back on every day, I am so happy that I still choose my writing and story first.

minor update! it's been like, a week into the goal--you know. the goal--and we have gained 5 chapters already (plust like an extra five bc i missed a wip that had some on it) SO we are at 134/365!!

daily wordcount is about 3.1k now! its really fascinating to see it be dynamic, you know? like, finishing a chapter actually has an effect on the total wordcount per day.

as for where these chapters went, here's a list:

hearthstone got finished (4 chapters, including an epiloge---though im planning on posting these over the next few weeks so it doesnt really count)

fourth got a chapter (a family affair) and it's cycled back around to the next one on the docket for tomorrow

epistolary sequel got about half a chapter (they're gonna be long ones)

handfast got a chapter and a half. im very excited about this one. i love the utter nonsense it is. its fun to have a feelgood fic you know?

lion blooded got its first chapter finished! i had to scrap a whole scene and a half, which sucked, and honestly i kind of futzed the timeline again but whatever. i dont care i like it this way

where you're needed now has 2 chapters in queue (up from the 1 from last week)

and i just finished the third chapter of dissolution (which has spread out to probably be about 5-8 chapters, depending on how much goes on in these next ones) this one is the hardest one to work on? but its good i think. the worldbuilding expansion it does is, well not important but interesting, i think. i hope people like it :)

i've been considering, if i finish epistolary in time, i'll post it for valentines day. that would be fun. we'll see! the goal is that every time a fic in the active wip list gets finished, i either pull up a whole new set or discard which ones need time to germinate. im not sure which i'll do for this set, since technically hearthstone was the one that got finished last time and it was kind of a focus all on its own.

anyway, that's it for today's update on word stuff! i think im gonna call it a night and see what fics i can pull up to read. :P

Happy 2024, everyone!

You know how it is when you get back from a week-long vacation. Parents who go on vacay with toddlers can imagine it even better. Lots of cleanup to do afterward, even though you're already exhausted!

But inside, I am bursting with energy and renewed hope and aspirations for the New Year! I am eager to settle back into my homebody routine (quickly, please!) and return to writing.

First order of fanfic writing business is finishing up my Yuletide series asap! At the same time, I also want to prioritize responding to the many wonderful tags and asks that's grown into a nice little pile in my inbox and brain.

For 2024 as a whole, I have lofty goals for making progress on my long/multi-chapter fics that runs across a wide lineup of several characters, including: Thranduil, Boromir, Éomer, and Fili.

I also fully intend to FINALLY complete at least one fic each for my woefully neglected blorbos: Elrond, Haldir, and Lindir!

I also promised myself I am going to read WAY more than I did last year, both in terms of fanfics and books, so we'll see how that goes!

I've had a mini influx of new followers over the past week, so welcome to all of you. I hope you find something to enjoy here. :)

2023 recap + 2024 plans

i wrote 261,200 words in 2023; 172,500 of those for Whispers, 88,700 for Goddess-Touched!

i read 16 books to completion, beta'd for an additional 2, am currently reading 3, and got partway through 5 others before having to put them down.

i maintained my streaming schedule with only a handful of emergency-related exceptions, and drew, uh, a shit ton over the course of the year!

writing goals for 2024:

fix Echoseers (full stylistic rewrite, along with some plot tweaks)

finish the first draft of Goddess-Touched (and edit it hardcore as well)

work on as-yet-unnamed book 4 of tms

fix up Whispers with the added feedback of beta readers

start querying Whispers (i'll look into self publishing down the road if i don't end up finding an agent. the way my brain functions i must cling to the hope of not having to market it myself tooth and nail for the time being)

POTENTIALLY. if my brain fixates on it. write the script for The Lost so that i actually have something to work with to make the comic happen

one of my offline friends is starting to get into writing, and im hoping to help them through some of the early rough patches and potentially co-write a thing with them!!

i completely dropped the ball on the weekly writing updates so im gonna try and get back to that on wednesday. and potentially get back into the weekly ask games!

non-writing goals for 2024:

youtube. i want to make speedpaints and worldbuilding videos and shit. ive already made the basic animation stuff to have a lil sona to do the gesturing for me and i know how to make videos i just havent done it in a While

twitch!! i want to stream a bit more often because its fun and if i let myself branch out into video games as well as art itll be easier to do that. u might see me streaming in the evenings sometime soon. (psst im not streaming this weekend as im still doing a shit ton of holiday/social stuff but the weekend of the 13th ill be back to both patreon and twitch baybee)

SPEAKING OF i want to get my shit together enough to do like. monthly short story releases for my patrons/ko-fi members. early access, that is, so if i post one in january, it'll be posted here a month or two later for all to see/read

i want to read as many books as i did in 2023, if not more! im also considering adding book reviews/thoughts to youtube or patreon/ko-fi perks

my weekend hiatuses aren't going anywhere. having time where im not actively engaging with tumblr + don't feel obligated to do Anything online has done wonders for my mental health and i highly recommend it. focus mode on my phone and leechblock on desktop has helped so so so much

My goal this year is to create more of all of my art forms…

Whether that be writing on here, painting, animating, singing, YouTube or tik tok videos, cosplay, etc…

I just wanna focus on what makes me happy and stop worrying so much about typos and little mistakes.

Some of my old characters will probably remain on the back burner for a while. Not that I don’t love them anymore, I’m just not in the right headspace to get back to how I was when I wrote them, and that’s ok.

But I do plan to restart/revamp some old series like my Hannibal Family au inspired by @charliedawn wonderful version of the Hannibal family. And Possibly start a new Gotham AU with @keffirinne if you would like too. Maggie will come back someday, but I think I need a fresh character to get me in the spirt.

That being said, there will be plenty of new stories (as long as my health doesn’t get in the way) and I’m working on a new requests list so people know who they can request fics and headcannons for 🥰

I got a little lost last year mentally but I’m coming back around and I’ve missed everyone so much. So bare with me while I get my shit together 😅 I’m trying my best

writing progress: january 7th

welcome to my first weekly writing post! one of my resolutions for this year is to create a daily writing routine, and i want to post updates on this account to keep me accountable (and so i can be more active on my writeblr again!!)

my goal for this month is 15,000 words, but we'll see! the first day of my spring semester starts tomorrow, and i'm very excited. but i am worried about balancing my workload with my writing and everything else. that's why i want to figure out my routine so i can dedicate some time to writing each day!

this week, i did a character study about river and vivian (my beloveds) and wrote part of a chapter of bitter & sweet. i went on a road trip with my family this week, but this week i hope i'll be able to figure out my writing routine.

As May comes to a close

I wanted to thank everyone for their continued support of my written works. "Aoh" now has 33 Amazon reviews, "Carousel" finally broke 10 reviews.

I am awestruck at all the KENP reads. Thanks to all of you I am one step closer to achieving my dreams.

Quick update:

I am slowly but surely editing a third standalone fantasy book. It's been difficult finding the time to edit, let alone write, but stay tuned for more details.

A ramble on writing where April broke my heart

Hooo boi.

March was a dream in comparison to April.

Emergency gallbladder surgery? Someone faking their death in my server? Good times. I wanna go back.

I have been through much in three short months. April has shown that it's taken a toll. I have missed many more days of writing. I'm still missing them in May. But I'm slowly gripping onto the last vestiges of my raw determination, all while in the face of so much.

I had a falling out with my closest family member that shook me to the core of my heart. I barely slept for most of the month again. Gallbladder surgery has proven to have some complications on my nervous system, making normal daily life difficult where it's hard to sit or lie down without experiencing full body numbness and tingling in various areas, including my hands and fingers. (No, not blood clots. 100% without a doubt it's my nerves.)

If you've followed me here (post one and two) and have read my author's on Terrible, But Great Chapter 30, then you know what went down with my family member. It took so much of my time and energy. I wrote well over 8,000 words trying to reason with this family member, only for all of it to be scorned and mocked. A part of me feels like that energy was wasted. I could have 8,000 more words in TBG, but I don't. This is all I have.

A part of me looks at it and says, "Give it back. Give me back my writing." What happened to January? Or even February? What happened to the girl who could wake up at 4am in the morning, an hour before she had to leave for her hysteroscopy, to power write 700 words?

Some days, I go up the stairs and I'm winded like I ran a marathon.

Some days, if I walk on the treadmill for more than 6 to 10 minutes, I feel like I'm dying.

It's been an uphill battle. The struggle is real, but so am I.

In the last week of December of 2023, when I realized how long it would take me to finish Terrible, But Great, I was overcome with what I call 'The Stirring.' I don't know what else to call it, but it always has an air of mystery and premonition for what it is to come. I thought at that time, "If I had limited time to live, what do I want to do?"

"I want to write."

So, I did.

In 2023, I published a total of 43,000 words in TBG. In 2024, from January to April, I've written 110,604 words and have published 35,000 words thus far. The year isn't even halfway over and I've done better this year than I have last year.

In spite of it all, I'm doing pretty damn good.

There's still hope. I'm not giving up. It might feel like morale is low, but it's not. I'm going to keep going as much as I can through all the hardships because writing is truly the one thing that breathes life into me.

By the end of April, I finished my business class with an essay about how the class shifted my beliefs. This class in combination with all of my health issues and social conflicts sparked an overwhelming revelation and a new rising determination within my soul.

You see, you all have witnessed my love and passion for writing Terrible, But Great, a Harry Potter fanfiction, but I also have original stories that I've wanted to write. Yet, I haven't been able to finish them because I'm always thinking about the market in the real world, instead of what I want and what the story wants. Fanfiction, I can do whatever the hell I want and yall are just gonna have to strap in and hold onto dear life cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride. Original novels, however, are done differently and I've often struggled due to so many factors.

I have ADHD. I am autistic. I have health issues which are rapidly piling up on top of each other. My career choice might not even be feasible for me in the long run, so why I am allowing myself to be pressured into doing more than I can handle with a class load?

I want to write. I want to write. I want to create.

Oh, how I want to create.

So, I will.

Two years ago, I gave up on my dream of writing original novels and earning a living through them. I've since repented of that notion. As I continue write Terrible, But Great, I'm also going to be working on my original novels on the side. Someday, perhaps, I'll be able to earn a living as a published author.

That's my realistic ideal.

I wrote 457 words today, May 9th. That's good enough. The goal this month is to write more than April. I can do that. On the days where prose is hard, I simply write my scene idea in a zero draft style. I don't worry about the prose; I'll fix it later. Every word counts. Every word can be changed. Every word can be made better.

Every word is good enough.

March 2024 - Goals & Updates

Hello everyone! I hope you're well. It's the beginning of a new month, so it's time for me to share with you my goals for March and any other important updates!

. Goals

• Write 30k across all writing projects • Finish A Spark of Magic Edits • Define the release date for A Spark of Magic • Finish drafting Not Another Cinderella Story • Rewrite Episode 1 of Risky Business

Despite receiving the manuscript for A Spark of Magic earlier than I expected, the truth is I am behind schedule. I'm still revising the printed manuscript and it's taking longer than I'd like, so that is delaying everything else. The good news is that I already have everything else to bring this book into your hands! Still, this month I will have news regarding the release date!

. Updates

I was supposed to have finished drafting Not Another Cinderella Story in February, but I didn't succeed. I hope to get it finished in the first week of March so I can take a week to rest and reassess the next project I'll be drafting. I'm torn between two, so we'll see which one wins! Any guesses on what they might be?

You've probably heard by now, but from March 4th to 10th 2024, Help Gaza Children will be sending all their donations to families in northern Gaza, where food prices have skyrocketed even more than in the south. Their goal is $25K by the end of the week; at the time of writing this post, it's about halfway a quarter way there! (OG post about it) [EDIT: my mistake, I misinterpreted the numbers in the original post; evidently I cannot do arithmetic anymore]

This is their notion site, which has their donation link as well as additional info, their FAQ, important updates, and proof of purchases from donations they’ve gotten in the past. You can also donate directly to their paypal here.

As such, I'll be open for sketch commissions up from now (March 7th, 2024 ~02:20 PST) through March 10th in exchange for proof of donation to Help Gaza Children!

Tier 1 - Basic head/bust sketch for $1-5 USD, +50% for basic color. Up to 3 characters.

Tier 2 - Basic screencap resketch for $5-15 USD, +50% for basic color.

Tier 3 - Posed sketch for $15-25 USD, 1-2 characters ONLY.

Tier 4 - Colored clean sketch: $25+ USD, 1-2 characters ONLY.

RULES:

Please provide a visual reference or detailed description of the character(s) you want drawn (and depending on the tier, a screencap or pose/expression you want to go with it)

DO'S: OCs, humans and human-like creatures, other creatures that don't have a lot of mechanical or anatomical detail (as in, I can TRY to do mecha stuff, but I think you and I will both be better of if I don't lol; can ask for further details)

DON'T'S: any NSFW stuff, real people currently alive (as in, historical figures in the setting of historical fiction may be okay, but other things may not be; can ask for further details)

If you've made your donation in a currency that is not USD, I'll give you something of equivalent value according to the tier based on whatever the conversion is at the time that I look it up. If one or both of our economies crashes spectacularly in between the time you send it and the time I look it up, I'm very sorry in advance

DISCLAIMER 1: I reserve the right to decline a commission for any reason; however, if this ends up being the case, I may reach out to you to see if we can come up with a middle ground that suits us both.

DISCLAIMER 2: I don't anticipate being able to do a lot of these, as I've got a full-time job that's in the ballpark ~80+ hours a week with really weird hours. That being said, depending on how far this goes, turnaround time will probably be ~2-3 months, give or take...something. I'll update you monthly until it's done.
