The company said its systems were not breached and that attackers gathered the data by guessing the login credentials of a group of users and then scraping more people’s information from a feature known as DNA Relatives. Users opt into sharing their information through DNA Relatives for others to see.
...
The full picture of why the data was stolen, how much more the attackers have, and whether it is actually focused entirely on Ashkenazim is still unclear.
...
Callow notes that the situation raises broader questions about keeping sensitive genetic information safe and the risks of making it available in services that are designed like social networks to facilitate sharing.
...
“This incident really highlights the risks associated with DNA databases,” Callow says. “The fact that accounts had reportedly opted into the ‘DNA Relatives’ feature is particularly concerning as it could potentially result in extremely sensitive information becoming public.”
Yeah, so, don't reuse passwords, and be careful what kind of information you share purposefully or opt in to passively sharing.
Jesus fucking Christ.

If you've ever used 23andMe to learn more about your family ancestry, you could be eligible for compensation due to a class-action lawsuit against the company.
Law firms in Toronto and Vancouver launched a class-action lawsuit against 23andMe this week in response to a data breach that exposed users’ highly sensitive and valuable personal information earlier this year.
"The action alleges that contrary to their promises, statements and representations, as well as the privacy regulation and industry standards applicable to them, [23andMe] did not introduce, implement or maintain proper or adequate data retention and data protection practices," reads the lawsuit.

something that will always be funny to me is that my grandmother was like a HUGE nerd about being of Brit’sh descent. like she held “english tea” all the time, paid for my sister and i to take etiquette lessons or “cotillion” i think it’s called, and like spoke with a lot of “british-isms” like using innit, or whatever and occasionally “let her accent slip” even though she has never had a british accent.
ANYWAY cut to several years later my younger brother takes a 23 and me bc he’s interested in his jamaican/haitian heritage (he was disappointed to realize that it doesn’t show up on something like this, just parts of africa) but he saw that he has no “british” ancestry, even though he should be at least a quarter according to all known facts up to this point, and it’s through his mother and his maternal grandmother so it’s not like infidelity has anything to do with it— kid already doesnt know his dad so he was expecting SOME surprises but not this.
so my grandmother takes one and is apparently FULLY FRENCH. (we did a little more research bc it’s not “that accurate” and found records of BOTH sets of her grandparents, immigration documents as well as self-identification reports that they filled out for something, idk i lived far away so i didn’t get all the details). she was inconsolable for days.
the unfortunate side effect is that this bumps up my french percentage to be my “majority” as my father was half french and half italian, i’m now half french (a quarter from each parent). not that these percentages or fractions really matter, my last name is italian and i’m changing it anyway— to something either french or italian.
further; should i still give her the british theme mug i bought her for her birthday or should i do like an eiffel tower theme something?

When I was in AP biology, a bunch of students kept asking the teacher to let us do the strawberry DNA lab (where you extract DNA from a strawberry). The teacher kept saying no because, according to him, all that lab teaches you is that DNA looks like snot. He was like “what would we even do with the strawberry DNA?” And someone suggested that we send it to 23 And Me and I think about that a lot

This feels necessary for a DNA blog. I think it's kind of neat to see how Ancestry and 23&me differ 🤷‍♀️
