Having recently picked up crochet, I decided at Xmas this year that I'd make blankets for my mother in law and my mother for next Xmas.
This one is for my mother in law. I'm uhhh using the wrong sized yarn and a smaller hook than the pattern calls for, so it's ending up a lighter weight than I think expected, but tbh I think I like how it's turning out. (I already adjusted rows/repetitions to produce a blanket of comparable size)

Idk. that crochet pattern post is going around again and it made me curious. So. going through the happypatty patterns I've bought in the last 2 years and adding together all the pages,
that's 18 patterns.
the grand total is 925 8.5x11 pages. I am. Extremely tempted to go grab one or two more patterns to push past the 1k mark.
I'm also extremely tempted to, when I win the lottery and thus have access to a printer capable of printing full length book pages, case bind as many of these patterns as I can into volumes just so I can like. have them on a shelf to chill with.

crochet book sleeve
Tumblr media
I very recently made this crochet book sleeve, and I was asked to share the pattern I used. I did not follow any patter found online, I crafted one myself and here's how I did it. I am no expert in crochet, and I improvised but it turned out pretty nice. I personally used some left over yarn from other projects, but you can use any that you like. I know that books have very different sizes depending on the coutry they are printed it, the English/ USA editions I have are totally differnt from the majority of my books in Italian, so I'd advise to take your own mesurements depending on the average book size in your country. I personally decided to mesure up an hardcover book in order to have a slightly bigger book sleeve. The number of chains you create to start of course depends on the size of the yarn you pick, I advise to start with a ruler nearby so that you can check the mesurements depending on your own plan. The book I picked as reference for the mesures was approximately 23x16x3.5 cm. I therefore created a plan using slightly bigger measures: 25x18x5 cm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My original plan and a drawing to hopefully make things a but clearer for you.
I was lazy so I decided to create the main structure with just three panels: one for the front, one with the same measures for the back, and a long strip to make both sides and the bottom. It was certainly quicker, but I do not recommend doing as I did. I would recommend dividing this in three separate pieces two for the sides and one for the bottom. Here's why: by doing as I did the bottom is not perfectly square, and it can be a little harder to sew together with the front and back. If you create three separate pieces it might take a bit more time, but believe me it will be much better. Lastly I created a smaller panel for the front pocket, that had the same lenght measure as the front, but was about half of its height. I recommend doing all the different pieces first and only after sew them together. I personally decided to use a tunisian stitch for the all the panels except for the pocket which I made with an alpine stitch. I think the contrasting stitch looks nice, but honestly do whatever you like best. After having all your panels firstly sew the pocket to the front panel, and just after that start attaching the sides and bottom. Remember to saw with the right sides facing each other, so that the stitches won't show in the end result (except for the front pocket, that you'll have to sew on top of the front panel in the way it will be at the end). When you are done attaching all the panels you can add a button and a string to close it on top and you are done.
I hope this was clear, I don't know all the technical terms in English, so I'm sorry about that. If I wasn't too clear just let me know. And if you end up doing this let me know!!

Day 4
Tumblr media
Once again, I'm not quite done working on this for the night, but I put it on a longer cord to measure it before I got too much further, and it fits really well! I'm thinking around 11 more inches of the body before I start the ribbing, but we're definitely getting there. Around halfway through yarn ball #3, which based on meterage, puts me approximately a quarter to a third of the way done. So far I'm having a great time with it!

out of curiosity, how long does it generally take to design a pattern? like, crochet, knitting, sewing, any of it, really. i've tossed around a bunch directly from my brain but due to The AuDHD i never really ever had a concrete moment of sitting down and intentionally putting together a pattern. i mostly just wing it whenever the urge hits me. fun in theory and in practice, but not a great way to time the creative process lmao
i need to know for uh. reasons. like how long is a reasonable time period to gather crafters together online for charity-related reasons and ask them to come up with something new. those kinds of reasons

Hello! Your crochet booksleeves are gorgeous omg!! I’ve just begun to crochet; would you recommend making booksleeves to a beginner? Also, if yes, where do you get good patterns? Thank you!!
Hi! thank you so so much love! 💓
• I think crochet booksleeves could be appropriate for a beginner, it just depends of the pattern. I personnaly started crocheting in october 2022, i wanted a granny square blanket and didn't want to spend 200 euros on one ; and i knew deep down that as someone who is very manual i would be able to learn how to make one.
youtube videos : youtube is amazing when it comes to video tutorials. having a visual of what's happening in the crochet pattern can be really helpful if you are a beginner. this is what i personnaly started with. as i said, i had this idea of a granny square blanket so i bought the yarn, found a youtube tutorials and just followed the video. it was confusing at first and i didn't understand that was happening. i didn't even try to learn the crochet term to be honest... i simply followed my muscle memory and i made granny squares after granny squares (that obviously helped me to work of the tension in my hands, so my squares became better and better). anyways, youtube tutorials are great and if you want to make your first crochet book sleeve, and 6 simple granny squares that you assemble together can be a great way to start.
pinterest : that social media is so amazing when it comes to patterns (if you feel confortable with written patterns). if you check my previous crochet post you'll see that all of my crochet booksleeves all look different, but in reality most of them are very similar, what makes a huge difference are the colours i am using. when i started getting into much harder patterns, i found a free website through pinterest with a dozen patterns of squares which changed my life. search for the Bláithín Blanket Stash from Annie Design Crochet ; most of the square you see are from her, they just look different because i play with colours as much as possible to make them look different and original.
• another great way to create crochet booksleeves (that i randomly came up with when i was taking a shower on a normal friday night) :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this design is simply 8 rectangles (I made them with half double crochet - US terms) that I assembled to together, and decorated with some appliques (same as the granny squares, appliques are really easy to find. for example type : butterfly applique crochet pattern and you’ll find dozens of them).
I really really hope this post helps you with you crochet journey, if you guys have any questions (even if you really want to find a free pattern, i’m like a pro at finding them now) do no hesitate to ask me and I will be glad to help!! 💓

i hate hate hate when a crochet pattern says "beginner" or "easy" in the title and then goes on as if they're writing for professionals!!!!!!!! I don't know how to make a magic circle Betty!!!!! Tell me don't just go
MC DC 4 CH 6 HDC5TOG
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!!!!!!
and they almost never put progress photos for people to compare!!!!!! Just say it's an intermediate pattern!!!!!!! then beginners won't look and get scared off of the craft!!!!!

i made this a long time ago but i figure it fits here.
ignore the books, this is set dressing, my tbr is infinitely long. no i haven't read any of these (yet).
pattern is by @chocoapple on ribblr, her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/choco.apple.shop/?hl=en
i made some mods to the original pattern, namely filling it with beans in the stalk part to make it a stim toy/stress ball and adding a lavender scent. lmk if anyone wants a full list of mods to fulfill their shroom needs.
