MWW Artwork of the Day (4/12/23) Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) Eternal Spring  (c. 1900) Marble sculpture, 77 cm. high The Hermitage Museum, st. Petersburg (S.P. Eliseev Colection)
This image of lovers embodies the poetry of youthful sensuality. Rodin employed a special method of working the stone, generalizing form, not finishing the marble in the hollows. The outline seems to be dim and the white marble to let light into its surface, creating an impression of purity and chastity in a scene of love.  The torso of the woman in this group is recognizable as that of a model named Adèle Abruzzezzi. Rodin used it repeatedly, and it appears, for example, in a very different context in "The Gates of Hell." "Eternal Spring" is in a lighter vein, however, full of awakening sensuality and implying neither guilt nor punishment to come.

Perhaps one of the most incredible sculptures in the world. It was created by an unknown French sculptor in the 19th century. It's kept in India's Salar Jung Museum.
The sculpture is known under the name "Double statue of Mephistopheles and Marguerite". The fact is that on one side of the statue is a male figure, and on the other - a female figure. Behind the sculpture there is a large mirror, so that you can see both figures and appreciate the skill of the author of this unusual creation. The sculpture is created from a single piece of the most ancient sycamore tree.

MWW Artwork of the Day (7/6/22) Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917) Mignon (c. 1867-68) Bronze bust, 39.4 x 30.5 x 49.5 cm. Rodin Museum, Philadelphia PA
In 1864 Rodin met Rose Beuret (French, 1844–1917), a seamstress who became his studio helper, the mother of his son Auguste-Eugène, and his lifelong companion —- despite the artist’s inability to remain faithful to her. The enigmatic title of this portrait may refer to an 1866 opera of the same name by composer Ambroise Thomas (French, 1811–1896), which featured a spirited, jealous lover. Despite Rodin having had numerous liaisons (Camille Claudel, Gwen John, and the American-born Duchesse de Choiseul, from 1907 to 1912), the two married on 29 January 1917 in Meudon, sixteen days before her death.
