옛날 옛적에, 한 할머니가 개와 돼지를 기르셨습니다. 할머니는 개와 돼지를 무척 귀여워하셨습니다. 할머니가 개의 머리를 쓰다듬으며 말씀하셨습니다. “참 착하구나. 집도 잘 지키고….” 할머니는 낮잠만 자는 돼지도 좋아하셨습니다.

“돼지야, 아프지 말고 무럭무럭 자라라.” 그러나 낮잠을 자고 있던 돼지는 할머니의 말씀을 듣지 못하였습니다. 돼지는 할머니가 개만 귀여워한다고 생각하였습니다. 어느 날 돼지는 개에게 물었습니다. “할머니께서는 왜 너만 귀여워하시니?”

“그것도 몰라?나는 매일 밤 집을 지키는데, 너는 밥만 먹고 잠만 자니까 싫어하시는 거야.” 돼지는 씩 웃으며 생각하였습니다. ‘오늘 밤부터 나도 잠을 자지 않고 집을 지켜야지. 그러면 할머니께서 나를 더 좋아하실 거야. 밤이 되었습니다.

“꿀꿀, 꿀꿀, 꿀꿀!” 돼지는 목청껏 소리를 질렀습니다. 돼지의 꿀꿀거리는 소리에 할머니는 잠을 이룰 수 없었습니다. ‘밤새도록 잠을 못 자고 울어 대는 것을 보니, 돼지가 병이 났나 보다.

내일 아침에 의사를 불러야겠다. 날이 밝자, 할머니가 의사를 불러 오셨습니다. 의사는 돼지의 엉덩이에 침을 놓았습니다. 돼지는 아파서 꿀꿀거리며 엉뚱한 생각을 하였습니다.

‘할머니께서 집을 더 잘 지키라고 침을 놓아 주시나보다. 그 날 밤에도, 또 다음 날 밤에도, 돼지는 큰 소리로 꿀꿀거렸습니다. “꿀꿀, 꿀꿀, 꿀꿀!” “꿀꿀꿀, 꿀꿀꿀!” 할머니는 돼지 울음소리 때문에 잠을 잘 수 없었습니다.

할머니는 몹시 화가 나셨습니다. ‘밤이면 밤마다 울어 대니 잠을 잘 수가 없구나. 내일 아침 날이 밝으면 장에 내다 팔아야겠다.' 이튿날, 할머니가 돼지를 장에 내다 파셨습니다. 돼지는 할머니의 사랑을 더 받으려다 그만 팔려가고 말았습니다.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Once upon a time, an old lady raised a dog and a pig. The grandmother the loved dog and pig. She patted them on the head and said, "That's nice of you. Keep your house safe...." The grandmother also liked the pig who only took naps.

“Don't get sick, pig. Grow well." But the pig who was taking a nap didn't hear the grandmother. The pig thought that grandmother only loved the dog. One day, the pig asked the dog. "Why does grandmother think you're the cute one?”

“Don't you know that? I protect our house every night, and she doesn’t like you because you only eat and sleep." The pig thought with a grin. "I'm not going to sleep and I'm going to protect the house starting tonight." Then grandmother will like me more. Night came.

“Oink, oink, oink!" The pig screamed at the top of his voice. The old lady couldn't sleep because of the pig's gurgling. "The pig must be sick, seeing that he's been crying all night without sleeping. I'll call a doctor tomorrow morning.”

At dawn, the grandmother called for a doctor. The doctor put a needle on the pig's butt (acupuncture). The pig was sick and giggled and thought of the wrong thing.

"Grandma must be giving me acupuncture to protect the house better." That night, and the next night, the pig giggled loudly. "Oink, oink, oink!" "Oink, oink!" Grandma couldn't sleep because of the pig's crying.

She was very angry. ”I can't sleep because of the crying every night. Tomorrow morning when it’s day, I’ll sell the pig at the market.' The next day, she sold the pig at the market. Pigs aren’t sold to stop trying to get more love of grandmother.

Fox sister with a twist

Once upon a time there was a wealthy farmer and his wife who had two sons and no daughter. The couple wanted a daughter so they went up to the mountains and prayed to the gods for a daughter every week but sadly no child came and they still had no daughter.

One day, The fox was chased by a tiger. Hiding in the bushes from the tiger, She saw the couple were praying for a daughter. This gave her an idea so she turned into a leaf and flew into the tea where the wife is sipping.

Nine months later, His wife gave birth to a daughter. The couple are happy to finally have a daughter. They celebrated by drinking Soju. A leaf flew into the Soju where the wife is sipping. Nine months later, The wife gave birth to a son but the couple didn’t care.

Six years later, strange things began to happen. Every night a cow would die, and in the morning they could never find a trace of what had killed it.

One night, the farmer sent his oldest son to watch. The oldest son watched over the cows. The sister walked over to her brother, holding a bowl of kimchi soup.

“Eat up, it will give you all the energy you needed”

The brother ated the kimchi soup and thanked her for the meal. When the sister left, the oldest son suddenly felt sleepy and ended up falling asleep, failing the mission.

Next, the middle son was sent to watch over the cows. When the middle son was watching, the sister walked over to her brother, holding a bowl of kimchi soup.

“Eat up, it will give you all the energy you needed”

Unlike his older brother, the second son refused.

“No thank you, I’m not hungry”

“How about a hot drink that keeps you awake all night?”

“A hot drink will be nice”

The sister left and returned with a cup of hot tea. The middle son sipped the tea and thanked her for the drink. When the sister left, the middle son suddenly felt sleepy and ended up falling asleep, failing the mission.

Finally, the youngest son was sent to watch. Late at night, the youngest son saw his sister walk over to him, holding a bowl of kimchi soup.

“Eat up, it will give you all the energy you needed”

Like the middle son, the youngest son refused.

“No thank you, I’m not hungry”

“How about a hot drink that keeps you awake all night?”

“A hot drink will be nice”

The sister left and returned with a cup of hot tea. When the sister wasn't looking, He throw out the tea from his cup and thanked her for the drink. When the sister left, he pretended to fall asleep.

The boy peeped one eye and saw his sister return. He witnessed his sister rub oil on her hand and push it into the ox’s anus and pull out its liver to eat it, killing the ox. In the morning, He told his father that his sister did it, by pulling the liver out of the cow and eating it. His father accused him of having fallen asleep and having a nightmare and threw his son out.

The youngest son was no more than a beggar wandering the countryside. Eventually he had come to the top of a mountain where an old Buddhist master took him in. He studied diligently with him until eventually his heart grew sore to see his home again. After a year he decided to return to his village for a visit. The old master gave the youngest son a gift of three magic bottles: one green, one blue, and one red.

Once the youngest son arrived, he found his sister living alone; she told him with tears in her eyes that their parents and brothers had died of illnesses. But the brother knew she was lying. In reality, the sister had eaten her parents and brothers. She asked her brother what he would like to eat for dinner. The brother, trying to buy time to escape, said he craved chives pancakes and sent her out to the field for chives. The sister tied up her brother before going out to the field, but he untied himself and ran out of the house, leaving the rope tied to the gate.

He fled and saw his sister was chasing him in her fox form. The brother threw the green bottle behind him and it became a thicket of thorns. But she slashed the thorns away with her claws and made her way through it. He threw the blue bottle behind him and trapped her in a river. But she swam ashore. He threw the red bottle behind, and fire surrounded her. But she blew the fire away with her powerful breath. Finally, The sister caught him.

“It's looks like your journey has come to an end!” she cackled. “You my meal now!”

She bared her teeth and unleashed her claws. She jumped at her brother, ready to attack and eat him.

But the boy wasn’t shaking in fear and he stopped running.

He whispered.

“no..”

The full moon came.

“..YOU” he growled with his teeth turned into fangs.

The brother transformed into a tiger and ate his sister.

The end.

Keong Emas and Ureongi Gaksi

aka Snail Brides!

Keong Emas or Golden Snail

A Javanese folktale about a princess magically transformed and contained in a snail shell.

This story is a part of the Panji cycle, along with Inao/Panji.

We see separated lovers, a covetous kidnapper king and divine intervention, along with the kindness of strangers culminating in a touching reunion between Raden Panji Asmoro Bangun and Dewi Sekartaji.

As with the other Panji tales, there are various versions of this story, along with a number of different names.

Ureongi Gaksi - The Snail Bride

A Korean folktale featuring a poor man instead of a prince.

Working in the rice paddy one day, he grumbled about having no one to eat with (because he was too poor to have a wife) and a mysterious voice told him to "eat with me."

Looking around, all he could see was a snail, so he took that home and eventually discovered that the snail could transform into a beautiful woman.

He made her his wife but one day a rich magistrate caught a look at the woman and decided to kidnap her for himself.

The husband went looking for her but could not find her, no one was willing to help a poor man over a magistrate and he eventually died of a broken heart, being reborn as a blue bird.

The magistrate refused to let the snail bride go and so she starved herself to death.

There are a number of versions of this story as well, most with tragic ends although there is a version that reunites the poor man and the snail bride.

There is also a similar Chinese Folktale known as the River Snail Maiden which includes a man finding a shell and thus a wife, and that bride being kidnapped by a rich man. While the story plays out differently, the ending is another tragic tale, more similar to the Korean story than the Javanese one.

Tale of the Fat Black Dog Princess

Foreword: I originally wrote this based on the Chinese Astrology. Granted, it's also based on my unrequited love for someone who I moved on from. Now it's a love story dedicated to actor, singer and model Lee Joon Gi. I plan to write more for other actors and actresses.

Once upon a time, there was once the Fat Black Dog Princess who fell in love with the White Rabbit Prince, who rejected her constantly.

The princess was too blind by her love for the prince to see reason and logic, even when others told her to move on. For nearly a year, the Fat Black Dog Princess sought the White Rabbit Prince's love, who was indeed frustrated with her.

Eventually, she gave up once he announced his engagement to the Fire Monkey Princess, which broke the Fat Black Dog Princess' heart. She realized she was in the wrong, having driven away the only man she loved.

For awhile, she closed herself off the world, driven into depression. That is, until she laid eyes on the handsome Eastern Fox Prince who arrived out of nowhere, just to see her.

He claimed they had been childhood friends until their separation. The Fat Black Dog Princess didn't recognize the Eastern Fox Prince at first, until she saw the scars from his neck. Memories of when he almost died after saving her from a wild wolf came back.

The Fat Black Dog Princess cried tears of joy when the Eastern Fox Prince told that he found out about her chasing after the White Rabbit Prince. He wanted to be the person she chased after instead of someone else.

That was when her heart began to slowly heal. In about a month or so, the Fat Black Dog Princess was engaged to married to the Eastern Fox Prince.

Another month afterwards, they were married. Two years later, the couple had nine daughters who were known as the Foxhound Princesses.

And so the Fat Black Dog Princess lived happily ever after.

Afterword: I wrote a longer different version on Medium as a two part serial, but I couldn't think of anything for the second part. So I decided to publish a shorter and simple version here on this platform. To be honest, I wish I didn't feel depressed while writing my stories. But I guess it comes with the territory of being a writer.
