more serious thought but… one of the fascinating things to me about Finn and Jake’s relationship is that Jake, as a dog, matures much faster than Finn. so even though Jake’s roughly the same chronological age as Finn, give or take a couple years, his physical and emotional maturity is years ahead.

now, there are lots of kinds of person in Ooo, and we see that many of them grow at different rates. (hell, there’s a lot of growth rates among candy people alone, with some starting out as adults and some as children, even before you factor in that some seem to be immune to old age while others aren’t!) so while some people, such as lumpy space people, grow at an age that’s comparable to a human’s speed, there isn’t any sort of standard, nor are facts about human biology very widely known. Joshua and Margaret likely didn’t know what to expect from Finn, and may well have expected him to mature at roughly the same rate as their other sons.

all this to say: I think there’s an extent to which Jake’s perception of Finn is similar to Bonnie’s perception of Neddy! it’s not identical, of course, as Jake and Finn have much more common ground and ability to communicate than Bonnie and Neddy. but I think that Jake feels responsible for Finn in the same kind of way as Bonnie does for Neddy, as well as there being that same sort of underlying worry about what would happen in their absence!

Neddy, our little sweater wearing cozy hot cocoa drinking halfling has grown a lot throughout the course of our six year campaign! While our party of campaigners saved the world in their way, he found a party of his own and saved it in his! Now they are together, at the end of all things!

Neddy specialized in both martial and magic skills, eventually becoming a rune knight and reknowned monster hunter! His runic armor was enchanted by a hag (who lost a game of jacks with him) to fit together when active and work as smoothly as a regular body-- making our little under 4ft halfling stand at 6ft plus! The sword he saved up for and bought by trading titan pieces to a mysteriously eldritch shopkeeper!

you know the “people get built different; we don’t need to figure it out we just need to respect it” scene is So intriguing to me bc of how strongly it runs counter to Bonnie’s philosophies on everything else

my suspicion is that, during those first 30-odd years, there were times that Bonnie resented Neddy! and probably wished that he was more like her, both out of loneliness and out of feeling like she was doing more for him than he did for her. I think she felt bad about that feeling, though, especially after the confrontation with Gumbald

and I think that might be part of why she mythologizes it so strongly in her head! because she was scared, she drew these bright strong lines in her mind where Gumbald was Bad and Not Her and so any similarities she had to him, any thoughts that she had in a moment of weakness, must also be Bad and Not Her

and so anyone asking about Neddy, even in a relatively neutral way, gets met with this stock response
